Ms. Glantz, who lives in Brooklyn, has been a professional bridesmaid in more than 100 weddings over the last decade.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Friendship issues between men can look a bit different, said Dustin Sitar, the managing editor of The Groom Club, a website dedicated to grooms. There may be disagreements over what is an acceptable bachelor party, for example, and how much partying is too much. Others applauded.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Many of the women had participated with artists in creating works that hang throughout the prison for the exhibition, titled “With My Eyes.” Francis, the first pope ever to visit — if briefly — a Venice Biennale, said that it was “fundamental” for the prison system “to offer detainees the tools and room for human, spiritual, cultural and professional growth, creating the conditions for their healthy reintegration.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“Not to isolate dignity, but to give new possibilities,” Francis said to applause.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Over the decades, countries participating in the Biennale — the world’s principal showcase for new art — have used deconsecrated churches, former beer factories, water buses and various other sites to display their art, but this was the first time a prison was selected.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">That made the project “more complex and more difficult to implement,” Bruno Racine, the director of two venues of the Pinault Collection in Venice and a co-curator of the Vatican Pavilion, said in an interview. But the setting is consistent with Francis’ message of inclusivity toward marginalized people, he added.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The Vatican project has received an overwhelmingly positive public reception, but it has not been without controversy. Some critics raised ethical concerns about the intersection of powerful institutions like the Vatican and the Biennale with the limited autonomy of imprisoned women. Others suggested that the Vatican, in mounting the show, was complicit in a penal system in which overcrowding remains a serious issue.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Still others demanded that the pope request pardons or at least reduced sentences for any women who were incarcerated because they had responded violently to domestic abuse.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“I don’t think the Vatican has the power to have any influence over Italian justice,” Mr. Racine said of that idea.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">While the Vatican has not publicly responded to the critiques, Francis has been consistently outspoken about domestic abuse, saying in 2021 that there was something “almost satanic” about the high number of cases of domestic violence against women.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">He has also been a vocal advocate of prison reform, denouncing overcrowding and often meeting with inmates during his travels.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">On Sunday, Francis said that prison was “a harsh reality, and problems such as overcrowding, the lack of facilities and resources, and episodes of violence give rise to a great deal of suffering there.” But he said prison could also be a place where people’s dignity could be “promoted through mutual respect and the nurturing of talents and abilities, perhaps dormant or imprisoned by the vicissitudes of life.”</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The pope described his artistic vision to artists he called to the Sistine Chapel last year, telling them to “think of the poor and to ensure that art went into the peripheries,” the Vatican’s culture chief, Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, said earlier this year. On Sunday, Francis told artists involved with the Vatican project that “the world needs artists.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The curators, Mr. Racine and Chiara Parisi, of Centre Pompidou-Metz, the French museum, selected a handful of artists to work with the incarcerated women to create works that are scattered through the prison.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">One, a 1965 serigraph featuring the word Hope backward, was hung over the door of the prison canteen, where about a quarter of the 80-odd inmates who agreed to serve as guides to the show first meet visitors. The serigraph was created by the artist Corita Kent, a former nun and an activist for social justice who died in 1986.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The Lebanese artist Simone Fattal transcribed poems and reflections by the incarcerated women on lava slabs that line a brick corridor: “I thought I was suffocating.” “I often think of my family.” “I am so sad.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">In another room were small stylized paintings by the French artist Claire Tabouret that were based on family photos the women had given her.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Visitors get only a brief glimpse of penitentiary life, but during the tour a short film, directed by Marco Perego and starring his wife, the actor Zoe Saldaña, shows the conditions inside in bleak black and white: shared rooms, shared showers, little privacy. Both inmates and professional actresses acted in the film, Mr. Racine said.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">This is the third time the Vatican has participated in the Biennale: In 2013 and 2015, it was among many participants at the Arsenale, one the fair’s main venues. And for the 2018 Architecture Biennale, the Vatican built a series of chapels, “for believers and nonbelievers alike,” that can still be visited.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">On Sunday, the pope greeted the inmates of the Giudecca prison individually in an inner courtyard. Some gave him flowers, and others pressed envelopes and notes in his hands.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Giovanni Russo, the head of the Department of Penitentiary Administration in the Italian Ministry of Justice, told reporters at a Vatican news conference in March that the women who participated in the project were entitled to unspecified benefits. While the Vatican Pavilion was unique, he said, nearly all of Italy’s 190 penitentiaries had “artistic projects” of some kind or another, involving more than 20,000 volunteers.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">It’s not the first time that the inmates at the prison have participated in major art projects. Two years ago, the French artist Pauline Curnier Jardin worked with inmates to make a film and paint a large common room where the women meet visitors twice a week. The walls are now a soft purple, decorated with stylized leaves and figures designed by the inmates during a series of workshops with the artist.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">After the Biennale closes in November, the artworks in “With My Eyes” will be removed, Mr. Racine said. But Ms. Curnier Jardin’s soothing additions will remain.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">After the prison, Pope Francis celebrated Mass in St. Mark’s Square.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Praising Venice’s “enchanting beauty” during the homily, he added that the city was also threatened by issues like climate change, overtourism, and the “the fragility of constructions, of cultural heritage, but also of people,” which risk fraying the city’s social fabric. A few dozen racers, part of an early morning heat, stood watching the steady tick of a five-minute countdown, displayed on a huge television overhead. Dramatic string music played on tinny loudspeakers. A booming voice intoned a rallying cry, “This is the moment you’ve been training for!” Lights twinkled. Spectators cheered.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">For the founders of the fitness race Hyrox, Christian Toetzke, 55, and Moritz Furste, 39, this kind of kitschy spectacle was always part of the plan. The original brief, when they introduced the race in Hamburg, Germany in 2017, was “to create an event that is a 200,000-euro (about $214,000) production that looks like a 2,000,000-euro ($2,144,000) production,” Mr. Furste said.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Hyrox’s “modern entertainment and light effects create a very special feeling,” Mr. Toetzke said, one that he hopes will create a “new proposition for mass participation events.”</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">A Hyrox race combines running with several functional fitness movements, such as the farmer’s carry, the weighted lunge and the burpee broad jump. It takes about 90 minutes to complete, on average, although elite racers can finish in under an hour. The race has exploded in popularity since the end of the pandemic: More than 175,000 people are expected to participate in the more than 60 races Hyrox has organized for 2024. Races in its most popular markets, including Britain, have sold out within minutes of going on sale.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><h2 class="css-kypbrf eoo0vm40" id="link-54d80af5">A Level of Respect</h2><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Hyrox is not the first fitness race to emerge from nowhere and gain a cult following. What distinguishes it from fads like Tough Mudder and Spartan, according to Hyrox fans, is its athletic simplicity.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“Tough Mudder and Spartan are an experience that has a sport aspect to it,” said Hunter McIntyre, 34, a full-time fitness racer who holds the world record in Hyrox. “Hyrox is a sport that is an experience.” When Mr. McIntyre would tell people that he was doing a Tough Mudder, “it was almost embarrassing,” he said. Now, when he tells people that he does Hyrox, “there’s a level of respect to it,” he said.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“Usually when you ask someone if they did a Tough Mudder, it’s like they went with their office, and they got pictures and wore funny outfits,” Mr. McIntyre said, whereas Hyrox, he added, “is truly a sport.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">As a sport, Hyrox draws heavily from CrossFit, including the equipment it uses. Ski Erg and rowing machines, kettlebells, ropes and weighted sleds are common fixtures of CrossFit gyms. Some Hyrox movements, such as the wall ball shot, were created by CrossFit, although CrossFit workouts use these movements only occasionally, following the founder Greg Glassman’s ethos of “constantly varied high-intensity functional fitness.”</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Mr. Toetzke said that he and Mr. Furste workshopped the Hyrox format at CrossFit gyms before the race was introduced. He added that while he tried CrossFit himself, he “thought it was a bit too much, a bit too hard, too injury-heavy.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">CrossFit involves many complex Olympic lifts and gymnastics skills, which can be difficult to master and, to some, dangerous to learn. Hyrox has avoided those kinds of techniques, sticking instead to simple movements that, Mr. Toetzke said, “are very hard to do wrong in a way that can hurt your body.” Despite or perhaps because of the similarities between the sports, Hyrox has deliberately positioned itself as the safer, more accessible alternative.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“Look, candidly I think they’re smart trying to leverage that,” Don Faul, CrossFit’s chief executive, said in response to these claims. “When you’re trying to enter a new space, you define yourself against the incumbent, the company that has defined the category. We’ve seen a variety of folks in the fitness space trying to take the same angle.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Mr. Faul, 47, a former platoon commander in the United States Marines, said that the apparent difference in accessibility between CrossFit and Hyrox is really just a difference in perception.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“The vast majority of people in our gyms are everyday folks, not elite athletes,” he said, adding that people stepping into a CrossFit gym for the first time might be “incredibly surprised by how welcoming and accessible it is.”</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><h2 class="css-kypbrf eoo0vm40" id="link-3376f2ab">Events Hold the Key</h2><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">While many local CrossFit gyms host their own events, the only in-person competition the company organizes is its annual CrossFit Games, which is for a handful of elite athletes and is meant to crown “the fittest on earth.” That’s another reason CrossFitters often join Hyrox. It offers a chance to test their fitness live.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Though it’s difficult to say precisely how much overlap there is between CrossFit and Hyrox, Chris Hinshaw, a 60-year-old coach who trains athletes in both sports, said that “most of the people who are getting into Hyrox got their start in CrossFit.” Many of the racers on the Hyrox podiums are also elite CrossFit stars, including Mal O’Brien and Mirjam von Rohr, two of the top CrossFitters in the world.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Hyrox claims to have more than 2,500 affiliate gyms around the world, at which athletes can train for the public races. Mr. Toetzke and Mr. Furste initially told The New York Times that “about 10 percent” of these affiliates were also CrossFit gyms. In Berlin, 16 of 18 listed on the Hyrox website also offered CrossFit classes. When asked for clarification, Hyrox revised their estimate to 22 percent. Mr. Faul said that, though CrossFit does not track the number, he “would be surprised if it was that low.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Mr. Furste seemed vexed to have to address the subject of CrossFit’s influence on Hyrox. “I absolutely don’t like this conversation,” he said. “We don’t want to take anything away from them. We love the training methodology. But in the end, apart from the functional workouts, it has nothing to do with us.”</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Each sport seem to be benefiting from the other. Mr. Hinshaw, the coach, said that Hyrox and CrossFit are “really a perfect pair,” pointing out that offering both sports is are a good way for a gym owner to increase member retention. “A lot of people think they’re competitive with one another, and that is not at all true,” he said. “By the nature of who these athletes are, they’re always chasing the shiny new object.”</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The question now is whether Hyrox can endure — or even continue to grow — as the blush of novelty wears off.It could also, like CrossFit, deepen in intensity while narrowing in appeal: It might inspire passion but the passion of the devoted few.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Mr. Toetzke doesn’t think so. “I don’t see the risk of becoming a sport only for committed people,” he said. “We are looking to the success and longevity and sustainability of the marathon.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Becoming as popular as marathon running, of course, is a rather lofty ambition for an organization with events that are a fraction of a marathon’s size. (Hyrox New York, taking place on June 1, will have less than 10 percent of the New York Marathon’s participants.) But this much can be said with surety: Hollywood is hornier than it has been in years.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“It absolutely feels like the pendulum has swung back toward filmmakers exploring adult relationships and sexuality in their projects,” said Amy Pascal, the former chairwoman of Sony Pictures and producing force behind “Challengers.”</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“I welcome that,” she added.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Eroticism used to be common in studio movies like “Challengers,” which was released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. “Body Heat,” “Basic Instinct,” “An Officer and a Gentleman,” “Fatal Attraction,” “Disclosure,” “Cruel Intentions” and “Eyes Wide Shut” are among the many examples from the 1980s and ’90s.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">In the 2000s, however, film companies started to obsessively focus on PG-13 franchises and animation — genres that could play to a global audience and sell merchandise. Studios also wanted to expand into China, where censors do not allow sex scenes. As a result, steamy storytelling began to dwindle on the big screen (except at art house theaters). Premium television picked up the slack.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Sex in mainstream movies was “pretty much gone” by 2019, as Ann Hornaday, chief film critic for The Washington Post, wrote in a column that year. A few months later, Kate Hagen, writing in Playboy magazine, found that only about 1.2 percent of films released between 2010 and 2020 contained an overt sex scene, the lowest decade total since the 1960s. (It peaked in the 1990s. Coincidentally or not, that was the decade when pornography started to become available online.)</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Now, some filmmakers are pushing back.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Awards season brought “Saltburn,” with its arousing-disturbing bathtub scene and Barry Keoghan’s twirling, full-frontal finale. “Poor Things” found an insatiable Emma Stone romping through a Paris brothel. Christopher Nolan filmed the first sex scenes of his 35-year career for “Oppenheimer.” (“More interested in the joys of sex than any recent season I can remember,” as Kyle Buchanan, awards columnist for The New York Times, described the crop of contenders in February.)</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Over the past year, the trickle of R-rated sex comedies in theaters turned into a relative torrent. “Anyone but You” found Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell going at it. “No Hard Feelings” starred Jennifer Lawrence as a kinda-sorta prostitute on a mission to deflower an awkward student. The libidinous “Bottoms,” “Back on the Strip” and “Joy Ride” also tried mixing sex with laughs.</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">In late May, Mr. Powell will return to theaters in the comedic “Hit Man,” about an undercover agent who begins a smoking-hot affair with a suspect, played by Adria Arjona. In addition to acting in the R-rated film, he co-wrote the screenplay with Richard Linklater and served as a producer. (It will arrive on Netflix in June.)</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">“‘Body Heat’ was one of the inspirations,” Mr. Powell said in January, when “Hit Man” debuted to rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival. “There aren’t many sex scenes in movies anymore, and certainly not many that are done well.”</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">He continued, “‘Body Heat’ has a lot of foreplay, which is one reason it feels so intense — steamy, carnal.” (“Body Heat,” released in 1981, starred Kathleen Turner as a wealthy woman who plots the murder of her husband while having a torrid affair with a sleazy lawyer, played by William Hurt.)</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The multiplex lineup for this summer includes “Deadpool & Wolverine,” from Disney-owned Marvel Studios; a trailer included a joke about an intimate act involving a sex toy. (The activity “isn’t new for me,” Ryan Reynolds jokes as the mischievous Deadpool, “but it is for Disney.”) “Blink Twice,” a twisted thriller starring Channing Tatum as a mogul who lures women to a private retreat, is scheduled for release in August. </p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">The upturn may simply be a scheduling quirk. “Challengers” was supposed to come out last year, but it was delayed because of union strikes. Its arrival now — sandwiched between “Poor Things” and “Hit Man” — could be creating the false appearance of a film industry turn.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">But there are signs that suggest a genuine shift. One involves intimacy coordinators, or experts who help performers navigate the awkwardness of filming sex scenes. Their inclusion on sets, once a rarity, became common after the #MeToo movement of the late 2010s. Film producers say stars have become more willing to participate in simulated intimacy as a result.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Young screenwriters and directors also seem to be rediscovering movies like “American Gigolo” (1980) and “9½ Weeks” (1986) and drawing inspiration. Some studio executives say filmmakers like Luca Guadagnino, who directed “Challengers,” are interested in exploring changing attitudes about sex — as seen in the rise of OnlyFans and the shame-free embrace of sexual fluidity by younger millennials and Gen Z. (One counterpoint: In a study last year by the Center for Scholars & Storytellers at the University of California, Los Angeles, about 52 percent of respondents ages 13 to 24 said they wanted movies and TV shows to focus more on friendships and platonic relationships.)</p></div><aside class="css-ew4tgv" aria-label="companion column"/></div><div><div class="css-53u6y8"><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Perhaps contributing a degree of sexual liberation: Studios have stopped chasing China, where ticket buyers have turned against Hollywood movies en masse.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">So far, results at the box office have been mixed. “Anyone but You,” made by Sony for $25 million, collected a hefty $219 million this year, while “Poor Things,” which cost Searchlight Pictures $35 million, took in a solid $117 million. Other attempts (“Joy Ride,” “No Hard Feelings”) have disappointed or fizzled entirely.</p><p class="css-at9mc1 evys1bk0">Reviews for “Challengers” have been extremely positive. Less than two years later, <em>Us Weekly</em> broke the news in January 2019 that the <em>Yellowjackets</em> star and the <em>Parenthood</em> alum welcomed their first child. Lynskey confirmed her daughter’s arrival later that month, revealing that the little one was born in December 2018.</p><p>“We feel lucky to have been able to have our news just be for friends and family for a while, but I guess the story got out, so!
