20.
Thank you to everyone who support us at Loonum. We hope you’ll follow us on the next part of our journey.

Many of you know that back on January 20th we were informed by Vox Media/SB Nation that our site will no longer be monetize and supported.

  21.

  22.

  23.
Earlier this morning we were informed by Vox/SBNation that they will no longer be supporting us and many other sites. We are working behind the scenes to determine our next steps.

All of our former local soccer coverage moved to @Lights_Football in 2022.
— E Pluribus Loonum (@NorthlandSoccer) January 20, 2023
  24.

  25.
  26.

  27.
The news from Vox/SBNation came out of left field for us while we were working our day jobs. At that moment we had a thousand questions and zero answers, but we had to begin to plan the next stage. Over the past month we have been diligently working behind the scenes to not only continue but also improve and expand our coverage for 2023 and beyond.

  28.
First we want to say thank you to all of our readers and everyone who has followed us over the past 6 1⁄2 years. We would also want to thank all of our current and former staff without whom, Loonum really would not have been a possibility. Without everyone who’s written for us has helped lay the groundwork for the next stage in our coverage of soccer throughout the Northland.

  29.

  30.
Over the past six years I have had the pleasure and privilege to cover soccer at all levels for this site. I have surprisingly been at Loonum nearly since the beginning with my first byline coming in January of 2017. Joining the site I was a young woman in her early 20’s with little writing experience outside of covering indoor football as well as no formal education or training. My indoor football writing is what I would now consider half hazard but it helped get my foot in the door.

  31.
I started covering the NPSL with Eli Hoff, who’s a special piece for us that you can read here, in 2017 when the North Conference was founded. 2018 saw Eli take over as Managing Editor and I moved into a role of Local Soccer Editor covering the NPSL North and the WPSL North, this is where I would get my first consistent bylines covering local clubs around the Upper Midwest. Partway through 2019 I would take over the Managing Editor role from Eli as he attended university. I had moved to Illinois the previous winter, but I made bi-monthly trips from the Quad Cities to St. Paul to cover the Loons.

  32.
Then the pandemic happened.

  33.
My at the time day job put me in a high risk environment, something I knew could bring risk to others, so I chose to cover the team remotely. That has remained the case to this day and I have not covered an MLS match in person since the fall of 2019. Covering Minnesota United and really soccer in general, has allowed me to meet some wonderful friends and colleagues along with having some experiences I will never forget. From covering Duluth FC and Dakota Fusion on a cold spring day at UMD to the first season at Allianz Field to the US Open Cup Final in Atlanta, this has been a dream come true.

  34.
After 3 1⁄2 years leading the site, this is my (and I cannot believe this) 408th and final piece on E Pluribus Loonum as we pack away the brand and bring out a refreshed, reinvigorated, renewed brand and site to you. I cannot thank you all enough for making this possible and I hope you’ll all join us on the next step of our journey.

  35.
— Ashle Paige

  36.

  37.
All that being said we will be moving forward, no longer as E Pluribus Loonum or on the Chorus/Vox/SBN platform. Our MNUFC and MNUFC2 coverage (as well as more cool stuff) will continue as Northland Soccer Journal! You can visit our site at NorthlandSoccer.com, our Twitter @NorthlandSoccer, and support us on our brand new Northland Soccer Patreon page! We thank you for all the support over the years and cannot wait to have come on this new journey with us.

  38.
Thank you,

  59.
We have answers to your burning questions

The new decade-long broadcast partnership between Apple and Major League Soccer officially launched Wednesday, February 1. As teased throughout the offseason, MLS Season Pass, coined an “unprecedented streaming service,” will make MLS matches and special features more accessible via the Apple TV app. While the deal favors current fans and season ticket holders, it may come at a price for those accustomed to getting local broadcasts.

  60.
The offseason pitch for MLS Season Pass was great: “Fans can watch all MLS and Leagues Cup matches, as well as hundreds of MLS NEXT Pro and MLS NEXT games— all with no blackouts.” According to information released to media ahead of Wednesday’s launch, fans will even be able to view some special content for free prior to the start of the season:

  61.
To get ready for the 2023 Major League Soccer season, fans can enjoy a wide variety of on-demand content that celebrates the action, excitement, and distinct culture of MLS, including content from MLS clubs, 2023 player profiles, the best league and club highlights from the 2022 season, full replays of classic matches, and documentary-style vignettes. The majority of this on-demand content is available for free for fans to enjoy before the season starts on February 25.

  65.
Apple-MLS Season Pass launched February 1, 2023.

  66.

  67.
Fans who were hoping for improved parity in coverage are in luck. The deal boasts a “world-class team of broadcast talent, consistent match times on Saturdays and a few select Wednesdays, improved production quality.” This prospect was widely praised in the offseason and keeps a number of regional broadcast talent on our screens or in our headphones despite the demise of local broadcasting.

  68.
Did you only click on this story for the cost? In pro/con form:

  69.

  70.

  71. Cons: Subscriptions will be $14.99 per month or $99 per season. Current Apple TV+ subscribers aren’t off the hook — You can add MLS Season Pass for $12.99 per month or $79 per season (a savings of $2 per month or $20 per year).

  72.

  73. Pros: “A subscription to MLS Season Pass will be included with each full-season ticket account” and “through Family Sharing, up to six family members can share the subscription using their own Apple ID and password.”

  74.

  75.
More information about Apple-MLS Season Pass can be found here. Season ticket holders can expect an email from their club with more information about redeeming their free subscription.

  76.

  77.
ICYMI: E Pluribus Loonum is in the process of transitioning from Vox Media/SB Nation funding and will have limited coverage of Minnesota United FC preseason. Please follow us on Twitter for the latest updates as we continue to get our new place ready ahead of MLS Opening Weekend.

  98.
  99.
Maybe Loonum matters. Maybe it doesn’t. But I believe in its future.

It started in the bowels of TCF Bank Stadium, back when that was its name and that was where Minnesota United played.

  100.
I really had no business being there. I might have had school that day. I didn’t have my license yet, so my mom drove me there. I didn’t have any real journalistic training, so I was just armed with a notebook and a brand-new tape recorder that my dad bought me. I was 15 years old, on assignment to cover the Loons’ first ever practice inside the stadium that would be their home for their MLS debut seasons.

  101.
It was one of the best days of my life. I knew it at the time, in that serene way that you realize you’re living a dream that you never want to end.

  102.
It didn’t. It hasn’t, not since E Pluribus Loonum let a high school stinkin’ sophomore cover United practices, not since SB Nation let a high school flippin’ junior run the site, not since all of that — two and a half years, 380 some bylines — launched my journalism career.

  103.
This isn’t about me. It won’t be, not too much, anyway. But I wouldn’t be where I am without Loonum and its people — readers and contributors — and its platform.

  104.
Everything I did here, as a contributor for the 2017 season and managing editor for the ’18 and part of the ’19 season, was a dream. I knew it was going to end: There was the whole starting college in Missouri in the fall of 2019 thing that required me to leave Loonum. But I didn’t know it would really End, with a capital-E.

  105.
I don’t know the right word to describe the emotion I felt when I saw the news, like everyone else, last week that Loonum and the rest of the MLS SB Nation team sites would no longer be supported by Vox Media — throwing so many futures and pasts into limbo at best, the internet’s graveyards at worst. So many of the words for it feel too dramatic. Being frustrated, disappointed, saddened, all of that seems sorta silly to feel over a dang soccer blog. There are so many other, bigger, more important reasons to feel all these things.

  106.
E Pluribus Loonum probably shouldn’t matter. Maybe it doesn’t. How can it really matter if it’s so easy to threaten it with revoking its existence? I want to think it does; obviously, I want you to, as well. But maybe Loonum mattering doesn’t actually matter.

  107.
“I’m not sure why I find it beautiful to devote oneself obsessively to the creation of something that doesn’t matter, but I do,” John Green wrote about a giant ball of paint, an idea that I find beautiful in its own right.

  108.
To be clear: I didn’t create Loonum. No singular person did. I won’t say I worked on it obsessively, but I spent more hours of the school day and evenings and weekends on Loonum than I probably should’ve. It wasn’t everything, but it was certainly a big-S Something.

  109.
“It’s cliché to speak of a work that won’t let you rest,” Emmanuel Carrère, my favorite writer, wrote. “But I’m not afraid of cliches.”

  110.
I can’t be afraid of them either here, not when I’m writing about Loonum. It all feels a bit cliché, how it — they, really, so many people — took chances on people, built a community and created cool content. Now that I’ve moved on from Loonum, and sports journalism, the nostalgia of thinking about the site feels cliché itself. I miss it sometimes.

  111.
There was the up-after-my-bedtime rush of writing in an empty Allianz Field after press conferences. The adrenaline rush of asking a question in those pressers. The thrill of chatting with these world-class athletes, who were always surprisingly down-to-earth. The fun of writing, constantly writing, about whatever soccer-y interested me. The embarrassment, then the motivation, that came from making a mistake.

  112.
Yeah, that’s all cliché. I should be more specific.

  113.
There was the night that the Minnesota United public relations team brought drinks to the press box during the post-press conference buzz time as a reward for the press corps and secured a piece of cheesecake for little ol’ underage me, a time when I felt like I’d managed to belong with my far more talented, far more trained counterparts and colleagues. There was the first time I asked a question in a press conference, blurting it out over the Star Tribune’s Megan Ryan and blushing when Adrian Heath looked me in the eye and answered it fully. There was looking up at Collin Martin, just hours after he came out as the only openly gay male athlete in the five major men’s sports leagues, hearing him speak with a poise and poignance that taught everyone there a lesson. There were scoops, satire stories, analytical projects, scouting reports, chances to try every sort of writing I could imagine or justify. There was the gut-twisting, sweat-inducing moment of watching Christian Ramirez score a goal and sit down in the middle of the field, offering a calm, deserved rebuttal to the unfortunate “sitting duck” critique I’d previously lobbed his way.

  114.
I doubt people remember most of these things. They probably didn’t really matter, in the same way that Loonum probably doesn’t matter, which is to say that they mattered a lot to me. And crap, this is quickly becoming about me — and it’s all still stupidly cliché.

  115.
But Carrère wrote that when you find the truth in a cliché, you learn something. I didn’t learn something from Loonum, I learned so many things, so you’ll have to forgive me for having found some truth to all of this.

  116.

  117.
I’ve hinted at this — and given up the pretense of not writing about myself now, so you’re stuck with it — but I’ve changed since the Loonum days. While I still write the occasional analytical soccer rambling in my free time, I’m out of sports journalism, instead reporting on higher education and politics and features from exotic places like Capitol Hill and Columbia, Missouri. (If you’ve spent time as a journalist in either locale, you know that “exotic” is only a half-joke.)

  118.
And I’ve grown a mustache. Not that you care, but if you saw me, you’d probably notice it. I bring it up because it allows me to bear a passing, mild resemblance to Ted Lasso when I wear a sweater and khakis and visor and aviators and the orthopedic sneakers I bought for $15 at an Aldi. (This is largely dependent on donning this outfit on Halloween, btw.)

  119.
I also try to bear a personality resemblance to the fictional soccer coach we all love, with the kindness and folksiness and aggressive, unwavering belief in good things.

  120.
That believe bit is important. It’s been important ever since my dad told me that the word’s second, third and fourth letters are my name, even if I promptly turned that pep talk into a multi-strikeout flop of a performance in a kids’ baseball game. Heck, I even slap the replica “BELIEVE” sign from the show that my roommate hung above our apartment door when I leave, sometimes, for the days when I need to believe a little harder.

  121.
Friday and its announcement of Loonum’s impending doom was one of those days, overdramatic as that must sound. I hope you get it by now, that Loonum matters. I’m far from the only one with stories like this. Maybe you have one too.

  122.
I don’t think this is the end of Loonum, though. I still believe. Maybe the domain will fade into non-existence, taking those hundreds of bylines with it. Maybe the lovely people who occupy this space will shift to a different one — and I hope they do. Maybe that space will be eerily, fantastically like this one. Maybe other people will get a chance to make it matter to them.

  123.
There’s a spirit to Loonum that’s been strong among United’s fanbase: an independent streak, a rebellious stubbornness. Could it just be a manifestation of the “hardy Minnesotan” cliché? You betcha.

  124.
But that’s why believe. The part of Loonum that doesn’t really matter — the literal website — is what will fade. The rest of it will manage to survive.

  125.
“All stories are born from hope,” wrote the deceptively eloquent Kieron Gillen in an Eternals comic. “The belief that there will be a next line is an act of hope.”

  126.
Consider this to be that, then. There’s beauty in the meaningless, truth in the cliché, and this, a Minnesotan, Loonum-ian act of hope. The story doesn’t stop here. I believe. I really do. I believe that we’ll create all of this again.

  143.
Minnesota United Head Coach Adrian Heath at a Minnesota United FC practice session on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at National Sports Center in Blaine, MN. | Michael Lake / Lake Photography

  144.

  145.
  146.
Lawrence and Reynoso still absent as the roster continues to take shape and the team finds its fitness

Two weeks into pre-season and there is very little to report from MNUFC.

  147.
The biggest news out of the Orlando training camp at the moment is the continued absences of Kemar Lawrence and Emanuel Reynoso. According to a club statement, both players remain in their home countries, Jamaica and Argentina respectively, “dealing with personal matters.”

  148.
The club, the statement continued, “will provide an update when we have more to share.” In coach Adrian Heath’s media availability on Thursday the first follow-up question concerning Reynoso’s absence was quickly shut down and referred back to the released statement. So, we are left to assume and speculate.

  149.
Maybe they are waiting for the charter flight — To fly to Florida with the two to three new signings. Which is, of course, not actually a funny joke and a bit callous and shallow. Especially on a day when we were reminded that professional athletes are not simply characters in our sports fan fiction. They have every right to deal with personal matters as they need to. The real point to make, here, is that the club has not earned the right to a ‘no comment,’ especially when those personal matters may be legal or criminal.

  150.
For a league built on supporters’ culture, MLS is often rather opaque, a black box of parity and stability. In three comments during his media availability, Heath pulled back, a little, one corner of that black box, noting the strangeness of the league’s roster rules: in relation to available U22 Initiative roster slots for future signings, the club’s need to draft Emmanuel Iwe even though he had already played for MNUFC2, and the club’s desire to get international players on green cards as quickly as possible to open up International roster spots. The roster, it seems, is on his mind.

  151.
Heath did confirm, although it has not been officially announced by the club, the signing of Mikael Marques from AFC Eskilstuna, of Sweden’s Superettan, the second tier of Swedish professional soccer. “Our Scandinavian scouts have been really impressed with him,” Heath said, going on to describe Marques as a versatile defensive player: “athletic, can play right back also, has played defensive midfield.” The 21-year-old center back will hopefully add some much-needed depth at the position for the Loons, while also continuing their recent youth movement.

  152.
Heath also noted that there wasn’t much quality on display in the team’s 1-0 win over NYCFC; it was, he said, a “typical opening friendly, a lot of people running around, a lot of enthusiasm. I don’t think the soccer was great from both teams.” Heath didn’t seem overly concerned by the lack of quality, though; preseason, he insisted, is about getting fit and staying healthy.

  153.
As they work into shape, the team will scrimmage a group of college players over the weekend and will close out their time in Florida with games against Philadelphia Union (Friday, January 27) and Orlando City (Wednesday, February 1).

  154.
Editor’s note: E Pluribus Loonum offers our condolences to the family and friends of Anton Walkes, and to the Charlotte FC and Atlanta United communities. Walkes’ death is a reminder to appreciate this game and the people who make it a community.

  290.
Expected and unexpected changes to our MNUFC coverage in 2023

The 2023 MLS season is fast approaching and, after a quiet 2022 from those of us at E Pluribus Loonum, we were getting excited about our big plans. This piece was supposed to be a reintroduction of our staff and a preview of all the things we had planned. On Friday, January 20, that all changed.

  291.
E Pluribus Loonum is among the many Major League Soccer sites under SB Nation that will no longer be monetized or supported by Vox Media. We don’t yet know what that means for this site (the domain, our name, our platform), but we can tell you that it will not stop our coverage of MLS and MN United FC. Conversations about possible stories and site formats quickly turned to how we will continue to bring you that coverage.

  292.
All of us here at EPL are grateful for your support and readership over the years and we hope that you will continue to follow the outlet and our contributors on social media and join us wherever our coverage may land. (To be among the first to hear of these changes and other ways to support us, complete our interest form here.)

  293.
And we would still like to reintroduce ourselves. These are the people who commit their personal time to writing articles, taking photos from the sidelines, and bringing you the moments that matter — from Allianz Field, the National Sports Center, Zoom calls, and beyond.

  297.
Why write soccer? My own competitive soccer career ended my freshman year of college as my skill reached its limit on the far end of a DIII bench. But I still and have always loved the game. It is, for me, a bit of philosophy disguised as play, filled with moments of shocking beauty and competitive cruelty. And it is just wildly joyful. My formal training is in academia (I studied and taught religious and cultural theory) but I left the field mid-career to become a homemaker and occasional writer (I really married up and am a much better supportive-husband than I ever would have been as an academic). I am excited to again have that occasional writing be about soccer.

  298.
Favorite soccer moment: My two favorite soccer moments are both yet to come. First, something amazing and impossible is going to happen this season: Emanuel Reynoso is going to thread an across-the-field, outside of the foot, nutmeg to Robin Lod in the 93rd minute of the US Open Cup to finally beat the Sounders when it matters; Christian Ramirez is going to make a triumphant return to MLS for one last season of glory leading the Columbus Crew to an MLS Cup championship; Hassani Dotson is going to find some faith in his knee and score an absolute banger on a hot mid-summer Wednesday night when it’s a little too humid to be having fun at Allianz. Something amazing and beautiful is going to happen and we are all going to get to be a part of it. Second, I celebrate a big birthday this year and so my wife got us tickets to see FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou. So yeah, there’s that.

  307.
Why shoot soccer? I’m a California-born transplant to Minnesota and lifelong soccer player and photographer. Sports photography is where I started: shooting for my high school newspaper on ISO 6400 black-and-white film, and ever since I’ve always been drawn to the pursuit of capturing great moments of athletes doing what they do best. There’s something immensely satisfying about getting that one perfect photo of the millisecond in time when an amazing play happens.

  308.
Favorite photo to shoot: When it comes down to it, sport is all about people and how they ride the wins and losses, the ups-and-downs, the triumphs and defeats. I love any time we get see how those emotions are expressed on the field, whether it be through the players or supporters, and trying to capture that energy in a single frame.

  309.
Favorite soccer moment: I’ve been a goalkeeper since high school, so I am a bit partial to amazing saves. A recent one that comes to mind: I was photographing Minnesota Aurora’s quarterfinal playoff match last summer at TCO Stadium and their opponent, Indy Eleven, was awarded a PK. 6,500 fans in the stadium and in the moment before the kick, you could have heard a pin drop. When Sarah Fuller blocked that shot with a leftward dive, the crowd erupted, and you could feel the wall of sound hit you like a wave. The energy in the stadium was electric.

  321.

  322.
Why shoot soccer: I think I started shooting soccer because I wanted to go to games, be close to the action, find a way around having to pay for good seats, and be able to contribute something I can take away. I was really into photography and soccer, so it was a natural connection.

  323.
Favorite type of photo to shoot: My favorite kind of photo to shoot is any sort of break of the norm or any showing of raw emotion. The 2020/2021 Covid games were interesting as a break from normalcy. Obviously, it wasn’t the same energy without crowds but it was something distinctive that I am glad I got to document. The emotion side, we get to catch every game but there are still unique moments where a great goal is scored, there is massive frustration after a string of misses, or a particularly bad late goal is given up. Catching the faces of fans and players in those instances can make for some images that I really enjoy.

  324.
Favorite soccer moment: That’s difficult to pin down. One that comes to mind is the game against SKC when the team clinched their first MLS playoff spot. They had lost in the open cup final a few weeks prior, and the rest of their schedule was pretty tough. SKC is a consistently great team, but they were having a down year, and I know personally I felt like the team had to get it done that day. I believe they went down a goal early, were able to level out the score around halftime, and eventually Hassani Dotson scored a late goal (probably a “banger”) to secure their place in the playoffs. I remember the stadium was super tense and when the go-ahead goal was scored everyone erupted and there was a massive release of really positive energy. You live for those kinds of moments. Getting to experience nights like that in person with such an awesome group of people (meaning not only the great group of players the team put together that year but also the friends I’ve made through MNUFC and photography) is really valuable to me.

  343.
Why shoot soccer: Soccer has been part of my life since I started playing in elementary school. Playing on the school team and in the summer leagues as well. Recess was almost always soccer for us. Whether that be out on the grass, inside in the gym or out on the ice and snow. It was rather exciting for me that the US hosted the world cup in ‘94 and the sport would grow more here. I recorded loads of games and made highlight reels by dubbing down to a second VCR. Newcastle United became my club to follow, albeit difficult at first with minimal coverage available at the time. Then when MLS rolled out I glommed on to DC United. Years later when I moved to Saint Paul I got my first taste of Minnesota soccer through attending Thunder games. It’s been a suitable pairing to combine soccer and photography which allows me to further immerse myself into the beautiful game.

  344.
Favorite type of photo to shoot: Having the capability to get a closer perspective to the athletes of a long time favorite sport is thrilling. The atmosphere is palpable. Hearing the roar of the crowd, after the thud of a boot impacting the ball as the players whiz by down the sidelines. There are lots of highs and lows in soccer that get dramatically amplified by the score lines that are often on the smaller side. All the actions of the players and the various reactions by fans and coaching staff makes for a great scene to take in and document through photographs. Zooming in and isolating those special moments while giving a different perspective than one seen from the stands or from a TV broadcast is a favorable image to create.

  345.
Favorite soccer moment: There have been a number of moments that stood out upon reflection so I will go with one that is more unique. After the deluge that created Lake Allianz and the postponement of the US Open Cup match between Colorado and Minnesota, I found myself in a cavernous Allianz Field with a few dozen fans from the night before. The old school heckling that ensued was hilarious. Colorado goalkeeper Clint “Old Dutch” Irwin could surely hear every word spouted his way in that empty stadium. The fans made there way from the Wonderwall to the Beer Hall end to continue their antics. The basis for that nickname was another fond memory from 2018. Back when Darwin Quintero chipped Irwin three times for a hat trick. It will be interesting to see his first appearance back at Allianz Field in a Loons’ kit this season and how the fans will greet him as he comes out to warm up in front of the Wonderwall.

  364.
Why write soccer: Because of severe asthma as a kid and then chronic knee pain and injuries, my playing career never went beyond pick-up games and one college season as equipment manager. I was introduced to the game through The Big Green, the 1998 Men’s World Cup and the 1999 Women’s World Cup (Scurry’s save should have been used by the newspapers first and I will not be taking questions), but I got more invested as I went through PT. Summer sessions at home in front of whatever Premier League match was being televised, copying workouts from movies, and later using touch and shooting drills in quiet parks as a way to regain lower leg strength between surgeries. Somewhere in there, I finally started going to games. I continued to learn the game from the sidelines, met new friends in the stands and got to know them at watch parties, and our banter turned to longer conversations which (naturally) led to blog posts and podcasts. I have gained far more from this sideline life than I ever could have expected. And I finally have a use for that English degree.

  365.
Favorite type of story to write: Stories about the supporters, about issues beyond the pitch. When I first started going to matches, I spent nearly as much time focused on the supporters around the pitch as I did following the play on it. We spill a lot of ink talking about how the Beautiful Game brings people together, but some of the most seemingly inconsequential moments off the pitch make the biggest impacts on the growth of a community. And without that community, this game is nothing. That has become more apparent - and, at the same time, more tenuous - in the last few years. If we’re not telling those stories, we’re doing it wrong.

  366.
Favorite soccer moment: From the first Merseyside Derby I caught on TV (while doing Theraband exercises between rooms) to my first game at NSC, the supporters stood out. The inaugural MLS match at TCF Stadium will always be a top memory. Every winter, I find my LRT pass in the pocket of my winter jacket and every time I put it right back in and zip the pocket where it will remain long after the ink wears off. The match was awful, but the memories made with old friends and new solidified my love for the game here in Minnesota. The energy of the fans after Justin Davis’ long ball to Christian Ramirez, the night Pablo Campos leapt into the mainstand, Jerome Thieson’s loon celly, the reaction to Vito Mannone’s PK stop and a DSC triple-save, the whooping and hollering for Emanuel Reynoso’s footwork between the corner flag and two defenders... The pure joy of walking through the doors at Allianz Field, whether for a Loons match, a USWNT friendly, or an All-Star showcase. Soccer is happening right here and it’s not going anywhere.

I fell in love with lower league football and at the same time worked my way up to covering MLS and had a list of events I wanted to cover. 397.
  398.
Looking forward to a new season and a full year of soccer as some things change and some things stay the same for MLS and MN United FC

It is hard to believe, but the MLS preseason has already begun. It was a soccer-full few months since LAFC beat the Philadelphia Union in the MLS Cup final to secure a domestic double, even as the cost for our sporting entertainment was quite high. But now we are back, and as we continue to wonder over what we are willing to let others pay to be entertained, we’ll try to get caught up.

  399.
MN United FC opened training camp January 6, as the team begins its 7th season of MLS play. After a number of very weird and irregular seasons, interrupted and disrupted by a global pandemic and a winter men’s World Cup, the 2023 MLS season may be, if not normal, at least a bit more regular.

  404.

  405.
The only planned interruption is the Leagues Cup, a midsummer, and (for MLS) mid-season, tournament featuring all 47 teams from MLS and Liga MX playing in a group stage then single elimination format, much like the World Cup format. Hoping to capitalize on a more general US-Mexico soccer rivalry, the tournament will be a chance to see and compare the breadth and depth of the two leagues, as opposed to the Champions League, which pairs only the top teams from each league against each other. Though at this point the Leagues Cup does feel simply like another more-is-more competition to add to the media schedule.

  406.
Beyond MLS, 2023 itself looks to be a very good and full year of soccer. (You can find a rundown of the MLS year here). While we are waiting on a few more dates, here are some highlights to begin:

  407.

  408.
February 25: MNUFC season opener at FC Dallas

  409.
March 7: CONCACAF Champions League play begins, with MLS clubs Austin FC, LAFC, Orlando City, Philadelphia Union, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC

  410.
March 11: MNUFC home opener against New York Red Bulls

  411.
March 25: NWSL season begins

  412.
June 24 - July 16: CONCACAF Gold Cup

  413.
June 28: MNUFC international friendly against 2 Bundesliga side FC Kaiserslautern

  414.
July 19: MLS All-Star Game presented by Target, hosted by DC United at Audi Field

  415.
July 20 - August 20: FIFA Women’s World Cup, hosted by Australia and New Zealand

  416.
Jul 21 - August 19: Leagues Cup

  417.
September 27: Lamar Hunt US Open Cup final

  418.
October 21: MLS Decision Day

  419.

  420.

  421.
The media landscape, and so maybe the quality (or at least the perception of quality), of American soccer is changing drastically with the announced ten-year, $2.5 billion deal between MLS and AppleTV. Six weeks before opening day there is too much we don’t know, but here are some important details (The Athletic has deeper dives here and here and here):

  422.
Beginning February 1, folks will be able to sign up for the MLS Season Pass through AppleTV. If you already have an AppleTV+ subscription, MLS Season Pass will cost $12.99 a month or $79 for the season; if you don’t have an AppleTV+ subscription, MLS Season Pass will cost $14.99 a month or $99 for the season; a subscription to MLS Season Pass will also be included with a season ticket for any MLS team.

  423.
All MLS games, including the All-Star game, MLS Cup playoffs, and the Leagues Cup, will be streamed live, with no local blackouts. Some games might be broadcast, as a simulcast, by ESPN, Fox, or Univision; some games may also be broadcast on AppleTV+ (separate from MLS Season Pass); there have been suggestions that 40% of this season’s games may be available without a MLS Season Pass subscription. All games will be broadcast in English and Spanish, some in French as well; all games, it seems, will have an option to mute the television feed to listen to the local radio commentary and play-by-play.

  424.
There will be a standardized schedule, with most games being played on Saturday or Wednesday, with a 7:30pm local home team start time. The live game broadcast will be presented around league-wide, nationally produced pre-game, half-time, and post-game shows, with a short pre-game set-up locally produced for each game. MLS will also produce a league-wide ‘whip-around’ show, covering every game. Which means that on any given Saturday, and some Wednesdays, during the season, MLS soccer will be available here in Minnesota from 6:00pm-11:30pm.

  425.
The full-broadcast team and on-air talent has not been revealed but 18 Season Pass personalities were unveiled during the league’s Media Week. AppleTV and MLS seem most excited about Taylor Twellman leading their broadcast team, while many of us are most excited that Kyndra de St. Aubin will be doing game analysis.

  426.

  427.

  428.
️ *tap tap* is this thing on?

Apple and Major League Soccer unveil the initial members of the broadcast team for MLS Season Pass: https://t.co/snm1IN4d6l pic.twitter.com/Y95IIgkhhH
— Major League Soccer (@MLS) January 10, 2023
  429.

  430.
  431.

  432.
This is, it seems, the big national media deal that the league’s relentless expansion has always been growing towards. I doubt anyone here will miss Bally/FSN, although Callum Williams and Kyndra de St. Aubin set a league-best standard. But certainly this deal will level the broadcast quality across the league, even if that lowers the quality in some markets as it raises it elsewhere.

  433.
With this deal as it looks now it will also be easier to follow MLS in general, more comprehensively and with more regularity. One drawback is that the deal also creates a single-brand narrative for a league that continues to insist on remaining a tightly controlled single entity. On the other hand, there are no blackouts, which is what hampered MLS and ESPN subscriptions in the past. It is still an open question whether all of this, and whatever else is offered, will end up being worth the subscription costs.

  434.

  435.
It was a rather quiet off-season for MN United FC , and so it is a little early to say much about the team. The roster is again and still in flux: Abu Danladi, Oniel Fisher, Jonathan Gonzalez, Niko Hansen, Jacori Hayes, Nabilai Kibunguchy, Justin McMaster, Romain Metanire, Callum Montgomery, and Tyler Miller were all released. Most surprising, or at least most disappointing, were the departures of Metanire and Miller: there is, for many, sadness that Metanire joins that too-long list of injured Loons who were, by all appearances, simply abandoned (wishing you well, Sam Cronin and Ike Opara), and much confusion and disappointment with a front office and a club that held on to two starting goalkeepers for as long as it did without getting anything in return for Miller as he signed with DC United as a free agent. Again and again fans are left to wonder at the roster building and management at MNUFC.

  436.
So far the team has added young winger and LA Galaxy product Cameron Dunbar, veteran center back Doneil Henry, goalkeeper Clint Irwin, young defender Ryen Jiba, who impressed the club in the Loons’ US Open Cup loss to his former club Union Omaha, and veteran defender Zarek Valentin, with rumors of more to come. Although a clear count is hard to come by, with the annually promised 3-4 more quality signings this season, that will be 90+ Loons in 7 seasons of MLS play.

  441.

  442.
Hopefully we will have a better sense of the full roster by the time the season starts, but this may again be a roster that needs to work its way into a team the first few games of the season. For now, almost everyone who should be in training with the team is:

  443.
Robin Lod is back from his California MLS media tour; after an extended layover midway through his travels, Franco Fragapane has made it to camp; Hassani Dotson is doing some light training with the team as he continues to rehab; Bakaye Dibassy is in town continuing his rehab, although after Thursday’s session coach Adrian Heath was not optimistic about his timeline (it will be “months rather than weeks” he said); and Dayne St. Clair is back with the team, after an extended World Cup break; Kemar Lawrence will be joining the team soon, and Emanuel Reynoso still has some “paperwork to clear up” in Argentina but has been cleared to train amid his ongoing legal matter and will be joining the team soon as well.

  448.

  449.
After a week in Blaine the team, with a handful of academy and MNUFC2 players in tow, flew to Florida on Sunday for a few weeks of warm weather training before passing back through Minnesota on their way out to California for the second edition of the Coachella Valley Invitational. The preseason tournament, open to spectators, runs February 1-18 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, CA. This year’s tournament features the LA Galaxy, Toronto FC, NYCFC, Charlotte FC, the Portland Timbers, San Jose Quakes, LAFC, DC United, NY Red Bulls, Vancouver Whitecaps, and league newcomers, St. Louis City.

  450.
MNUFC kicks off the 2023 season on February 25 at FC Dallas. After a Week 2 bye, the Loons will reopen Allianz Field on Saturday, March 11, against New York Red Bulls.

  472.
The Loons welcomed Vancouver Whitecaps to St. Paul in a match that was critical to both teams' postseason hopes.
