Chinese flash memory maker claims breakthrough - QLC NAND matches endurance of TLC NAND

<dc:content>
Typically, the more charges a NAND flash cell can hold, the less durable it is in terms of program/erase cycles. But 3D NAND material innovations, advancements of NAND controllers, and error correction algorithms can significantly increase the number of P/E cycle a NAND flash cell can sustain. This is what happened with Yangtze Memory Technologies Co.'s?X3-6070 3D QLC device?that boasts the endurance of 3D TLC ICs,?ITHome?reports.?

YMTC's X3-6070 3D QLC NAND device belongs to the company's fourth Generation products and features 128 active layers as well as Xtacking 3.0 architecture with a 2400 MT/s interface. While 128 active layers do not seem like a record by today's standards, one of the key part about this 3D QLC NAND device is that the manufacturer claims rather significant endurance of 4,000 program/erase cycles for this IC. The fast interface supported by these devices makes them suitable for the?best SSDs?featuring a PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0 interface.?

Back in the day, it was believed that 3D TLC NAND could sustain 1,000 to 3,000 P/E cycles, but advancements of materials, controllers, and ECC methods increased that number to 4,000 P/E cycles and beyond. 3D QLC NAND was originally thought to be capable of 100 to 1,000 P/E cycles, but all makers of memory increased that number, as well. YMTC is perhaps the only company to advertise that its 3D QLC NAND is as durable as 3D TLC NAND, other makers of flash memory are surely also making progress in this direction.

Without any doubt, 4,000 P/E cycles is a great achievement for YMTC's X3-6070 3D QLC NAND memory devices. It remains to be seen how competitive these flash memory ICs are considering the fact that they have 128 active layers, whereas YMTC's competitors offer QLC 3D NAND devices with 176 or more active layers.?

YMTC currently uses its X3-6070 3D QLC NAND memory for its PC41Q consumer-grade solid-state drive. This SSD boasts a sequential read/write speed of 5500 MB/s and a data retention period of one year at 30 degrees Celsius, which is on par with TLC solid-state drives. With endurance of 4,000 P/E cycles, Yangtze Memory is looking forward to use 3D QLC NAND flash for enterprise-grade storage devices.

Game developer issues warning about Intel's fastest gaming chips - downclock Core i9 flagships to avoid crashes in Outpost Infinity Seige.

<dc:content>
Recently released title Outpost: Infinity Siege just got its second patch in a matter of days rectifying certain crashes during cutscenes. However, the developerss revealed in the patch notes that there are still high-priority issues causing severe crashes and screen blackouts in-game. The issues are bad enough that the developers at Team Ranger are recommending users downclock their Core i9 Raptor Lake or Raptor Lake Refresh CPUs to 5 GHz as a temporary measure.

The recommended mitigations don't stop there. On top of the clock speed workaround, the developers recommend gamers switch power settings to energy-saving mode on appropriate hardware. The Outpost: Infinity Siege team also recommends verifying file integrity in Steam and updating graphics drivers, but these are not unusual recommendations for rectifying game instability.

If you check out the game's Steam page and Steam sub-forum, it won't take you long to discover that there are a lot of issues with the game. The game's comment section and forum are loaded with complaints about Outpost performance and instability. One example as reported by Game Pressure comes in the form of Out of Video memory Error crashes which the outlet says happens frequently in-game.

These issues appear to be even worse than other games that have received poor reception at launch, including Jedi: Survivor. That game had an absolutely abysmal performance at launch and was also subject to frequent instability.

Could Power Limits be another culprit?

Even though there is a lot of evidence pointing towards the game being the problem. The developer's recommendation to reduce clock speeds on certain Raptor Lake and Raptor Lake Refresh CPUs might be a problem with Intel's hardware specifically — rather than the game itself. A month ago, we reported on a serious issue related to Intel Raptor Lake CPUs (and by extension 14th Gen CPUs) where the default power limits on most Raptor Lake-supported boards were causing instability in certain games.

We found this problem is very legitimate and was also affecting our GPU review Jarred Walton in several games including Alan Wake 2, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Zero Dawn, Immortals of Aveum, Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, and The Last of Us, Part 1.?

The problem boils down to how the power limits in BIOS are set automatically for most Raptor Lake-supported boards. Nearly all compatible motherboards automatically ramp up the power limit to 4096W (i.e infinity) to prevent any sort of performance loss from power throttling. This improves performance, but technically this is not actually within official officiations of the chip. This can, unfortunately, lead to application instability in some cases, depending on silicon quality.

It is possible, but not guaranteed, that this is another culprit causing instability in Outpost: Infinity Siege. The fact that the developers targeted the i9-13900K and i9-14900K specifically backs up this theory even more since those two CPUs consume the most amount of power (and generate the most amount of heat) compared to their i7 and i5 contemporaries and are more susceptible to the issue.

Modder morphs NES cartridge into a working console that plays other NES games — and itself

<dc:content>
On March 22nd, cunning YouTuber James Channel converted a slightly-defaced copy of NES Open Tournament Golf into a fully-functioning NES console with the ability to play other NES cartridges. Using a combination of determination, ingenuity, a few brute-force tools and a mini circular saw, James successfully dismantled the original cartridge and a knockoff compact NES console and their internals to create the fusion.?

For those unfamiliar with the classic Nintendo Entertainment System cartridges of old, those bulky things were mostly empty plastic in the same way most 2.5-inch SSD casings are. The actual components are compact, but aesthetics and future-proofing concerns gave us the final cartridge design. Because of this, there was actually plenty of space inside the Open Tournament cart to work with.?

Most mini/handheld DIY console projects demonstrate that most of an original console's motherboard can probably be chopped off for your project, and this is no exception. Roughly two-thirds of this knockoff NES' internals are roughly broken-and-screwdriver-pried away from the central cartridge slot and SoC less than a minute into the full video, to give you an idea of how some of these parts didn't need to be re-used.

The video detailing the build process shows even more remarkably violent steps (at one point, while cutting leads on the controller ports causes the solder on the PCB to shoot to the ceiling.), but the final project is remarkably effective for what it is. Besides the NES cartridge console having the ability to play itself (with an extension cable) or other games, it also still functions when slotted into a proper NES console when all is said and done.

Besides the original NES hardware being easily crammable onto a single chip by the clone unit, James also used Micro USB for power and a 3.5 mm cable for A/V output to keep the footprint low. The original controller ports were also maintained after stripping them off of their original board, and their setup with wiring actually takes more space inside the cartridge than the rest of the NES does. Keeping the original ports also makes controller support pretty much perfect.?

Also, while the footage in the video seems to be flickering, that is likely because of James' camera settings, as noted in the edit. When recorded, CRT TVs and monitors can look quite a bit different depending on shutter speed, including severe tearing or flickering that is not present in the real image.

New Windows Insider build gets rid of annoying watermark, adds Copilot support for local accounts

<dc:content>
Available today to Windows Insiders in the Dev or Canary channel, Build 26090 makes a couple of small but seemingly radical changes that highlight the company's commitments both to its Copilot AI tool and its Insider program. Users who have logged in with local accounts can now use Copilot — though, with some limits on its functionality. Also, the ugly (but otherwise harmless) version number watermark that sits in the lower right corner of the screen is now gone.

The watermark, which shows the build number, has long been a staple of Windows Insider builds. My laptop, which is enrolled in the Dev channel and hasn't been updated yet to Build 26090, currently shows "Windows 11 Home Insider Preview. Evaluation copy. Build 23620.ni_prerelease.240118-1056." That message is annoying when I take screenshots and it shows up. Now that's gone, and I'm sure few people will miss it.

(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)

Microsoft has been pushing Copilot very hard lately — so much so that it's willing to offer the AI assistant to users who are doing things the company doesn't like. A few months ago, the company brought Copilot to Windows 10, the near-end-of-life operating system it wishes its customers would stop using. Now it's allowing local account users to use Copilot, even though current builds of Windows 11 require you to sign in with a Microsoft account to complete the set up process.?

In another article we show how to install Windows 11 with a local user account, but this requires a small hack that Microsoft clearly doesn't want people to use. You can also set Windows 11 up with a Microsoft Account and then create a local account afterwards. So the company clearly wants you logged in... but perhaps not as much as it wants you to try Copilot.

There are limits to what a local account can do with Copilot, however. In its blog post on Build 26090, Microsoft says that "you can ask Copilot in Windows for help ten times" with a local account. After that, the company notes, you'll have to sign in with a Microsoft Account or an Entra ID (Azure Active Directory) account.?

I installed Windows 11 Pro Build 26090 on a virtual machine and tried it with a local account. After just five prompts, Copilot gave me a message saying, "you've reached the conversation limit. Sign in to continue your chat."

(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)

However, when I started a new conversation, I was able to continue using Copilot. It's unclear to me whether you can just start a new conversation after every five prompts or if it's going to permanently cut you off after a while. After I signed in to the VM with a Microsoft account, it stopped limiting me. And, even when I switched back to a local account, Copilot didn't seem to get the memo as it greeted me as the username associated with the Microsoft account and didn't impose any limits.?

If you're not signed in to a Microsoft account, you definitely cannot use certain features. For example, when I asked Copilot to draw a dog, it told me that I needed to be signed in with a Microsoft account in order to request images.

(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)

However, Copilot prompts that interact with the Windows system itself work just fine with a local account. When I asked Copilot to enable dark mode, it asked me to click a confirmation button and then changed to dark mode. When I asked it to launch File Explorer, it launched the program, but still only after I confirmed my intentions.?

(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)

The fact that you have to click a confirmation button after asking Copilot to do something really defeats the purpose of Copilot, but that's an issue that occurs whether you use it with a local account or not. The one thing that the assistant will do without asking you to click "Yes" is open different parts of the settings menu. For example, when I asked it to "change wallpaper," it opened the Personalization Settings menu for me. You still have to go into the Settings menu and perform the change, however, so it's not exactly an automated process.

(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)

Microsoft also announced that, in build 26090, it has added a navigation bar to the Widgets Board. This navbar is supposed to allow you to switch between a dashboard that has only the custom widgets you asked for and Microsoft's integrated Discover dashboard, which shows a lot of news headlines.?

Microsoft says that this feature won't be available to all insiders right away and, in my case, it wasn't there. The screenshot below is from Microsoft's blog post.?

(Image credit: Microsoft)

Last year, I wrote about how awful the Windows 11 Widget Board news stories are. Perhaps the ability to toggle to a list of custom widgets will make it look less like a supermarket checkout aisle and more like a useful tool.

For now, all three new features — local account Copilot, no watermark, and the new Widget Board navigation — are limited to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels. However, if history is any guide, there's a good chance that all three will eventually come to the release build. If you want to try them now, check out Microsoft's blog post.

Gaming monitors come in various shapes, sizes, resolutions, aspect ratios, and panel types. One category that has seen an explosion in popularity in recent years is the ultrawide category, with the most popular resolution being Wide Quad High-Definition (WQHD). While traditional 16:9 aspect ratio QHD monitors have a 2560 x 1440 resolution, UWQHD stretches the resolution horizontally all the way to 3440 x 1440 (21:9 aspect ratio). There are even some superwide monitors available, taking the Double Quad High-Definition (DQHD) moniker, delivering a 5120 x 1440 resolution (32:9 aspect ratio).

Most of these monitors are curved, giving you a more immersive viewing experience for such wide panels, and they use varying technologies ranging from VA to QLED to OLED. You’ll find many monitors in the 34-inch size class, although some behemoths can measure up to 49 inches across for those with a lot of desk real estate.?

Below is a list of the best ultrawide gaming monitors currently available based on our in-depth testing and reviews.
The ViewSonic Elite XG341C-2K ticks a lot of the right boxes when it comes to gaming monitors. Not only does it have a 3440 x 1440 resolution with a native 165 Hz refresh rate, but it can also be overclocked to 200 Hz. It is both AMD FreeSync (to 165 Hz) and Nvidia G-Sync compliant and has good build quality.

However, the Elite XG341C-2K stands out with its VA panel with Mini LED backlighting. This gives the monitor rich colors out of the box, incredible contrast (which we would expect from a VA panel), and an eye-searing maximum HDR brightness of 1,400 nits. And thanks to Mini LED backlighting, the Elite XG341C-2K has 1,152 dimming zones versus the fewer than 400 that we typically see with a FALD panel.

There are a couple of gotchas, though, regarding the Elite XG341C-2K. For example, brightness controls are locked on when using Active-Sync, and Active-Sync can't be enabled at all when taking advantage of the overclocked 200 Hz refresh rate. However, if those are manageable for your gaming priorities, the Acer Elite XG341C-2K is an excellent choice for ultrawide gaming monitors in the under $1,500 price segment.

Read: ViewSonic Elite XG341C-2K Review

The ASRock PG34WQ15R2B is an ultrawide gaming monitor with excellent fundamentals and a price tag that won't break the bank. Its specs are about what you'd expect for this class, with a 3440 x 1440 resolution, 165 Hz native refresh rate, DisplayHDR 400 support, and a 1500R curve. As expected, you'll find a VA panel that's good for a contrast ratio of 3,000:1.

Regarding color, accuracy is top-notch, and it offers best-in-class HDR image quality. There's also low input lag along with an easy-to-use OSD and control scheme. The monitor even includes a built-in Wi-Fi antenna to extend the range of a PCIe wireless networking card (if your desktop PC is so-equipped).

However, with a street price under $350, ASRock had to make some compromises. For example, there's only one setting for overdrive in the OSD, which didn't result in a difference in the on-screen action. There's also a hint of gamma issues (value of 2.00), resulting in a somewhat hazy image.?

But overall, the ASRock PG34WQ15R2B offers a solid package and deserves a spot on our list.

Read: ASRock PG34WQ15R2B Review

There’s ultrawide, and then there’s mega-ultrawide. That’s where the Lenovo Legion R45w-30 comes in with a 32:9 aspect ratio and a maximum resolution of 5120 x 1440. It’s the equivalent of having two 27-inch QHD monitors glued together (side-by-side).

The 45-inch monitor used a VA panel with a 1500R curve, and it even managed to include a native refresh rate of 165 Hz (170 Hz with overclock) and support for AMD FreeSync and Nvidia G-Sync. As you would expect from a VA panel, the Legion R45w-30 offers excellent contrast. Lenovo has also done a superb job ensuring good color saturation and sharp and bright pictures. Colors are also accurate once you’ve calibrated the panel.

One thing to consider about the overlock is that setting the monitor to 170 Hz only “sticks” for half an hour. Once that time has passed, it automatically reverts to 165 Hz. That’s not a big deal in practice, as our testing showed minimal impact on panel response time or input lag when using the overclock mode.

With a street price of around $800, the Lenovo Legion R45w-30 is an excellent choice for satisfying your widescreen gaming needs.

More: Lenovo Legion R45w-30 Review

Shopping Tips for Gaming Monitors

When trying to buy the best gaming monitor for your PC, consider the following:

G-Sync or FreeSync? G-Sync only works with PCs with Nvidia graphics cards, while FreeSync only works with systems using AMD ones. You can technically run G-Sync on a FreeSync-only monitor, but performance isn't guaranteed. Even though not every gaming monitor is officially G-Sync certified by Nvidia, most of the units that we've tested support it just fine. For a detailed comparison of the two technologies' performance, see our Nvidia G-Sync vs. AMD FreeSync comparison article.

Which resolutions? Some popular resolutions include UWQHD (3440 x 1440), DQHD (5120 x 1440), 5K Ultrawide (5120 x 2160), and Super Ultrawide (3840 x 1200). Whereas a traditional 4K (3840 x 2160) monitor would allow you to fit two documents side by side comfortably, a 5120 x 1440 monitor would up that count to three.

What panel tech? For image quality, IPS < VA < OLED.?IPS displays have slightly slower response times but better color than VA monitors. The best gaming monitors for contrast are VA, but VA also has slower response times. Displays with OLED panels are expensive but are much more colorful.

Refresh rate? Higher numbers mean smoother images and the ability to see fast-moving targets better in games. Gamers should look for 100 Hz at the bare minimum, along with the lowest available response time. However, some monitors on our list offer even higher refresh rates at up to 240 Hz.

The PC case often gets neglected by system builders when choosing parts for a new PC. Or, they push the case decision off until the end of the component-picking process. But you should consider your case options early on when considering your next build.

The best PC case for your build will dictate the size, shape, and identity of your computer, deciding its looks and what fits inside. Plus, the PC case is a major factor how noisy your system will get under load, thanks to its fans and mesh or glass panels. And these aspects also massively impact the cooling potential of your rig.

If you like your system's small, you can choose to go for one of the best Mini-ITX cases to minimize your PC’s footprint on your desk. Or, you can get a chassis like Be Quiet's Dark Base Pro 901 to house a big, butt-kicking workstation with acres of expansion possibilities. Below, we’ve collected a list of the best PC cases we've tested, from the dozens of models that have landed on our test bench in recent years. So long as you check whether the parts you want to use will fit and you like the looks, one of these cases should keep you and your PC parts happy for several years to come.

We aren't sure who asked for a PC case that mixed mid-century modern design (wooden slats and all) and high airflow, but we sure are glad that Fractal Design answered with the excellent North mid-tower. Available with either a mesh side (as we tested) or tempered glass, and in white with chrome accents on the IO and feet, or black with some seriously pretty brass, this is arguably the prettiest PC case ever produced, period.

And thanks to its pair of 140mm fans and an included side bracket (for the mesh model) that can hold another pair of 140mm fans (not included), the North has excellent thermals as well. Just note that it can get noisy when delivering those temps. The glass side panel may help a bit on the noise front, but likely at the cost of at least some thermal performance.

If you don't like the case's looks, then the company's Meshify 2 Compact (below), is probably a better option for you. But if you're after a case that matches the pretty furniture in your living room, has lots of room for storage, and won't break the bank at $130, nothing else comes close to the North. We hope Fractal's bold move inspires other case makers to try something different.

Read: Fractal Design North Review?

?Not long ago, a PC case with four 140mm RGB fans and a tempered glass side panel would have cost well north of $100. But Phanteks manages to deliver that, plus support for high-end components and emerging rear-connector motherboards, in a choice of black or white, for just $80. It's a great case for builders looking to put together a gaming rig with great cooling, who want to spend most of their money on core components like the graphics card and CPU.

The four included RGB fans deliver lots of airflow, and with some tweaking of settings in your BIOS or software, they can also run reasonably quietly. And when I installed an MSI Project Zero motherboard in the case, all the holes lined up perfectly and there was enough room for cable slack. SATA drive support is also good for a mainstream case, with a 3.5-inch drive cage and up to five 2.5-inch drives supported. ?

It's clear that Phanteks had to cut some corners to keep the costs down (there's a even a stepped-down XP Pro model with a single fan that has an MSRP of just $50). There are no grommets around the cable holes, and only two top USB ports (one USB-C and one USB-A). But for just $80, the Phanteks XT Pro Ultra delivers great airflow, lots of RGB, and support for modern features and high-end hardware. There are better cases out there if you're willing to spend significantly more than $100. But in its price range, Phanteks XT Pro Ultra is hands-down the best option for most gamers and system builders.

Corsair’s 4000X RGB is a sleek gaming tower that comes with two glass panels and three RGB spinners. Priced at about $135 now, it’s not cheap, but its design is thoroughly considered and as you build with it, it’s clear where Corsair’s gaming and PC building pedigree comes from. Indeed, the 4000X RGB (as well as the similar 4000D airflow), is an extremely easy and convenient chassis to build a system in, and everything just makes sense.?

While it won’t blow you away with premium materials such as aluminum, the dark tinted glass ensures that you only see RGB lighting inside the case, allowing you to be a little sloppy with cable management because you won’t see it anyway. It's also a pleasure to build in, with good cable management and a $130 MSRP that's quite reasonable in this era of seemingly ever-increasing prices.

The primary missing feature here, which will feel refreshing for many builders, is the lack of any RGB to light up your system.
Lian Li’s PC-O11 Dynamic has been a staple, go-to PC case for pretty builds in recent years, but its days might be numbered.
Corsair's 2500D airflow doesn't stand out much as a general Micro ATX case. But as a case specifically for rear-connector motherboards, it's the best I've tested so far. And if you're after a case for a full-size ATX build, the company also sells a 6500D Airflow for $199. These cases get the basics right, like cutout placement (although a PSU support strip right above the bottom cutout is annoying). But more importantly, due to their dual-chamber design, they provide enough room for the large amount of cable slack that results from plugging nearly everything in behind the motherboard, instead of up front. The other cases I've tested with these rear-connector boards don't have nearly enough space behind the motherboard. For even more room for cables on the 2500D, you can opt for a smaller SFX power supply. But of course, that generally costs extra.

I do find the basic presentation of the 2500D a bit drab, but adding the $69 wood accent panels morphs the 2500D from a plain bulky box to something I enjoy looing at. That's not going to be worth the extra expense for everyone, ?but because the panels are accessories, you don't have to decide whether you want them or not until after you own the case. And you are spoiled for choice, as the company offers panels in silver aluminum and four wood varieties. Other accessories include a vertical GPU mounting kit and a front panel to turn the 2500D into the 2500X.

The substantial size and substantial cooling needs of today's components – particularly graphics cards like Nvidia's RTX 4090 – have made several compact cases from the past few years effectively obsolete. But at just 10.4 liters of volume, the Mini-ITX Fractal Design Terra case has enough room for most big GPUs, while delivering attractively thanks to an aluminum exterior with some attractive wood on the front.

It doesn't have as wide of an appeal as its ATX North cousin, since you'll be far more limited in your component and airflow options with the Terra. But if you don't need to pack in the absolute most powerful CPU (cooling clearance is particularly cramped) and you don't need several storage drives, the Terra is compact, practical, and stunning – especially if you want a respite from PC gaming's typical RGB and aggressive designs. The Terra's flip-up doors and adjustable spine also make this case surprisingly easy to build considering it's so compact. Just know you'll need to bring a modular SFX PSU, because you'll need all the spare interanal space you can get with this case.

Figure out what parts you have/want first. Before prioritizing looks, you’ll want to know what motherboard, graphics card, and cooler you’ll be using, plus how many drives you’ll want to install. This will dictate the size of the cases to consider.

Cooling is key, especially in small cases. Airflow is important in choosing the best PC case, especially when it comes to high-end components in tight spaces. Check our cooler reviews for our cooling test results before buying, and remember that cases with glass fronts and tops restrict airflow and may need extra fans.

Choose a chassis that you like to look at. Your case of choice is likely to spend lots of time in your peripheral vision. Don’t forget to check airflow and that your parts will fit. But after that, find something that appeals to you visually. Take the time to find a case that appeals to you visually.
We tried to install Windows 11 on Raspberry Pi 5 — lack of internet connectivity left us stuck

<dc:content>
It hasn't taken too long for the Windows on Raspberry community to get Windows 11 running on the Raspberry Pi 5. Yes, the flagship Raspberry Pi with a quad-core 2.4 GHz CPU and up to 8GB of RAM can now run Windows 11, with some caveats. We watched a few videos from LeePSPVideo and followed the guidance, but our success was short lived.?

The first big hurdle that we faced was using a UEFI BIOS firmware that was able to boot Windows 11. For that we followed the instructions in the Windows on Raspberry (Pi) GitHub repository to create a microSD card with the UEFI BIOS. We successfully booted the Raspberry Pi 5 using this BIOS and had a poke around inside to get a feel for how it works.?

Our curiosity satisfied, we downloaded the WoR project's Raspberry Imager, a tool which automates the installation of Windows 10 and 11 for the Raspberry Pi and other single board computers.

Before we used the tool, we needed to obtain a legal Windows 11 image and once again WoR had a tool to streamline the process. Note that this download may be flagged as dangerous by your browser, so make every effort to confirm its legitimacy before continuing with the download.

Starting up the WoR Raspberry Imager, we went through the motions to create a Windows 11 installation on a spare NVMe drive — a drive that was known to work with the Raspberry Pi 5. Installation was a breeze, if a little slow, but we soon had Windows 11 ready for use on the Raspberry Pi 5.

First, we booted it up and we saw "The Raspberry". The system then attempted to boot, but after a long wait (10-15 minutes), there was nothing. Was it the drive? No. This same drive worked fine with Raspberry Pi OS. We still tried another drive, but alas we were met with the same failure.

From the Raspberry Pi 4 onwards we have been able to boot from a USB 3 drive and the Raspberry Pi 5 is no different. We removed the NVMe Base and the drive. Put the drive in a USB to NVMe adapter, and met the same issue as before. Undeterred, we created a fresh install drive and retried the USB method, it worked! Soon we would have Windows 11 running on the Raspberry Pi 5!

The post-install Windows 11 setup procedure is pretty straightforward. Get the user's location, locale, keyboard and name. Then connect to the Internet, link to your Microsoft account and download the updates. We thought that we could just connect to the Internet. Surely, Ethernet would work. Long story short: nope. Ethernet and Wi-Fi were both failures.

Watching LeePSPVideo's YouTube video explained that Wi-Fi, Ethernet, Bluetooth and audio were not working with Windows 11 on the Raspberry Pi 5. This meant that USB dongles were needed. I tried over a dozen Wi-Fi dongles, but none worked. An old Linksys USB to 10/100 Ethernet also failed to work. We needed another means to finish the setup!

Following our guide on how to install Windows 11 without a Microsoft account, we managed to bypass that part of the setup and finally reach the Windows 11 desktop. But, without internet access we are left with a rather lovely-looking brick.

This isn't the end of our adventure with Windows 11 on the Raspberry Pi 5. Once the WoR project has updated firmware / drivers for the Raspberry Pi 5 we shall go back and see if we can make the Raspberry Pi 5 into a low-cost, Arm-based desktop PC.

In the past we have installed Windows 10 on a Raspberry Pi 4 and have even managed to make Windows 11 work with a Raspberry Pi 4.
GPU pricing update: Nvidia RTX 4080 Super prices down to $999 MSRP now — 4060 starts at $279

<dc:content>
When we reviewed the RTX 4080 Super at the end of January, we noted that it only offered minor performance improvements over the RTX 4080, but the $200 cut in MSRP was a welcome change. I didn't think demand for the RTX 4080 Super would drive prices up much, but at least for six weeks, that proved to be wrong. In February, the least expensive RTX 4080 Super we could find was often in the $1,300 or higher range — and the same was true of the 'discontinued' vanilla RTX 4080 cards. The 4080 Super should be one of the best graphics cards, but a 30% price premium compared to MSRP makes it much harder to recommend.

Thankfully, the situation has improved in the past few weeks. With many AI companies apparently willing to buy RTX 4090 cards, that pushed prices on the fastest consumer GPU up to $2,000 and more, and we worried the RTX 4080 Super as the second fastest graphics card would suffer a similar fate. Now, the RTX 4090 can be found for $1,669 — granted, most still start at $1,799 and up — and the RTX 4080 Super starts at $999. (You may also want to try putting a notification on the Asus store where the 4090 TUF Gaming still sits at $1,599, though it's frequently out of stock.)

These aren't price cuts but rather price corrections where the base prices are now getting at or at least closer to the official MSRP. Hopefully, that's because supply has caught up to demand and we won't see higher prices going forward, but only time will tell. And since we're already talking about GPU pricing, let's also look at the other Nvidia Ada Lovelace RTX 40-series GPUs as well as AMD and Intel cards.

(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)

The rest of Nvidia's GPU stack has been largely unaffected by shortages. There's not much point in getting the vanilla RTX 4080 now, given the cheapest price is over $100 more than the 4080 Super. The new RTX 4070 Ti Super starts at $799, as expected — occasionally with a sale that might drop the price another $10–$20. The RTX 4070 Ti was officially phased out when the Super models were introduced, but while inventory lasts you can get the RTX 4070 Ti for $689. The least expensive RTX 4070 Super is this Zotac at $579 (with $10 instant rebate code), $20 less than the MSRP. The RTX 4070 at $524 is $25 below the new MSRP as well.

Below that level, our enthusiasm for Nvidia's latest GPUs does start to fall off, with the three different 4060-class cards starting at or below their official MSRPs. The RTX 4060 TI 16GB starts at $449, so no discount there. RTX 4060 Ti 8GB costs $379, $20 below the MSRP, and RTX 4060 starts at $279, also $20 below MSRP.

The raw price-to-performance ratios favor the lower-cost GPUs, but there are certain tasks where some cards fall on their face — any workload that needs more than 8GB for example won't fare too well on the 4060 and 4060 Ti 8GB. I can name several games off the top of my head where max settings will exceed 8GB, even at 1080p: Cyberpunk 2077, Forza Horizon 5, Hogwarts Legacy, Horizon Forbidden West, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. More will undoubtedly come out this year. Be careful about picking up an 8GB card if you're hoping to run 'ultra' settings going forward.

(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)

AMD's competing RX 7000-series GPUs follow a similar pattern overall, with most selling at or below their official MSRPs. The RX 7900 XTX officially still has a $999 MSRP, but the XFX RX 7900 XTX costs $899, $100 below MSRP after the $30 instant rebate. RX 7900 XT costs $699, so it's $50 below the now-reduced official MSRP, while the RX 7900 GRE sits at $439, $10 below MSRP.

AMD's RX 7800 XT starts at $499, so there's no current discount — which makes the 7900 GRE mentioned above that much more attractive. RX 7700 XT costs $399, however, $50 below the MSRP and certainly worth considering. That's 20% less than the 7800 XT, for about 15% lower performance.

We're not as keen on the last two RDNA 3 options, with the RX 7600 XT starting at $319 — $10 off MSRP but it still feels overpriced for what you get. That's 20% less than the 7700 XT, but it's also 33% slower on average. And last but not least, the RX 7600 costs $249, now $30 below the official launch MSRP, though performance is still pretty lackluster — it's only barely faster than the previous generation RX 6650 XT at $230, though you do get AV1 encoding support and DP2.1 outputs so the 7600 is probably worth the extra $20.

(Image credit: Tom's Hardware)

What about Intel's Arc GPUs??The current Intel Arc Alchemist GPUs are in a tough spot, as they were late to market and were pretty much intended to compete with the previous generation RTX 30-series parts. The Arc A750 was billed as a less expensive alternative to the RTX 3060, with roughly similar performance, but the 3060 has now been replaced by the 4060. Price cuts have helped to keep Arc relevant on some levels, but efficiency is definitely a weak spot.

The top-end Arc A770 16GB now costs $279, which is basically the same price as Nvidia's RTX 4060. It trades blows with Nvidia's card, has double the memory and double the memory bandwidth, but also double the power draw. Overall, the RTX 4060 tends to win out, and drivers are less problematic. The Arc A770 8GB at $343 is basically discontinued and pointless, as the 16GB variant is faster and better in every meaningful way.

While the A770 isn't a great option now, the Arc A750 at $209 remains viable. It's slower than AMD's competing RX 7600 in rasterization games, but also $40 cheaper — though it does still use quite a bit more power. And if you're considering the A750, the step down to the Arc A580 at just $159 represents the best GPU value right now in terms of FPS per dollar spent.

The A580 is about 10~12% slower than the A750 and costs 24% less, and still has the same 256-bit memory interface and 8GB. It's a great budget GPU, particularly if you're still holding on to something from five or more years back. It's about the same performance as the RX 6600 and RX 5700, as well as the RTX 2060 Super, if you're wondering.

And at the bottom of the stack sits the Arc A380 for $99 again. Prices had crept up for the past few months, which was unfortunate as this card really belongs in the sub-$100 range. It's sufficient for 1080p medium quality gaming, with decent video encoding/decoding capability, and it only needs about 75W of power. The Sparkle card we linked even gets by without any external power, though it likely gives up some performance in the process. But since this card isn't about performance in the first place, that should be fine.

We dug around to check out prices on all the current generation GPUs. Nvidia's RTX 4080 Super launched at the end of January, but prices quickly shot up to $1,300 and more. Two months later, availability and pricing have improved and there are quite a few models now selling at or close to the base $999 MSRP.
Granite Rapids shows up on CPU-Z boasting 80 cores and 672MB of L3 cache

<dc:content>
@yuuki_ans on X (Twitter) shared a CPU-Z screenshot of an 80-core Granite Rapids Intel Xeon engineering sample, displaying several major specifications of the new chip. The chip comes with 80 cores and also features 672MB of L3 cache, a 2.5 GHz max frequency, and a 350W TDP.?

Sadly we have to take most of these specifications with a huge grain of salt, it's obvious that CPU-Z is not reporting some of the CPU specifications correctly. For instance, if you look at the thread count, CPU-Z displays a whopping 320 threads that are enabled on the CPU. Granted, this massive thread count might be legit, but there's nothing known about Granite Rapids that would indicate a massive change in Intel's hyperthreading technology would enable 320 threads on just 80 CPU cores.

But assuming that all of the other specs are legitimate, it looks like Intel is being super aggressive on its L3 cache upgrades compared to Emerald Rapids as well as core count increases. The massive cache size represents a nearly 6X capacity improvement from Intel's flagship Sapphire Rapids CPU and a 2X upgrade from Intel's flagship Emerald Rapids chip the Platinum 8592+. It is also just 96MB shy of AMD's EPYC 9384X and 9184X 3D-VCache CPUs which sport 768MB of L3 cache. Besides L3, the chip reportedly has 320MB of L2 cache and 10MB of L1 cache.

花岗岩鸡柳,啃不动啊……后面还有金刚石鸡柳……---CPUz识别有错误,自行分辨一下……(步进和修订有点太早期了,有点菜) pic.twitter.com/wEG8Vh3g0HMarch 28, 2024

See more

Core count is also massively increased. The 80-core Granite Rapids chip has 20% more cores than Intel's flagship Emeral Rapids 8592+ CPU and 25% more cores than its Sapphire Rapids flagship. This is the first Intel server CPU in a long while that actually comes close to matching AMD's mainstream EPYC server processors (not accounting for Zen 4c variants). We aren't even sure if this is the flagship SKU, so there could be even higher core count Granite Rapid chips on the horizon.

The chip's 350W TDP reveals that Intel is keeping its TDP configuration the same on Granite Rapids as it is on Sapphire Rapids and Emerald Rapids, at least on this 80-core model. This is good news for efficiency, and means that Intel is not boosting its TDP in line with the higher core counts Granite Rapids will be shipping with.

The CPU-Z screenshots also reveal performance benchmarks of the Granite Rapids chip, however, the results are so bad they don't give us any clues about the chip's real performance. For context, we can't find any CPU-Z benchmarks of Emerald Rapids, and after checking out a CPU-Z benchmark result we got from AMD's flagship EPYC 9654, the Granite Rapids chip is nowhere even close to the AMD CPU's performance level.

Granite Rapids is Intel's next-generation server CPU architecture that will likely be released in the next few months. The new architecture sports a brand-new performance core codenamed Redwood Cove with a host of performance enhancements and extra features compared to Sapphire Rapid's P-cores. The most noteworthy addition is the inclusion of AMX support with FP16 acceleration which is a key addition that will boost AI inference performance. It also comes with new prefetch and brand prediction tech as well as higher floating point IPC performance.

Granite Rapids will also be the first architecture to come with Intel's bleeding edge 3 nm Intel 3 process technology, which will bring an 18% performance-per-watt gain and high-density libraries that weren't included in the Intel 4 process. Intel was originally going to build Granite Rapids on the Intel 4 node, however it decided to delay Granite Rapids to 2024 to move it up a notch to Intel 3.

With all of these core, cache, and architecture improvements in mind, Granite Rapids is shaping up to be one of the largest performance jumps from Intel in a long time.

Samsung's 49-inch OLED monitor hits all-time-low — get $600 off this ultrawide monster screen

<dc:content>
The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 is a superwide 49-inch monitor with impressive specs and a more impressive discount. If you want to amalgamate a couple of monitors into just one beautiful OLED screen, then this could well be the solution for you — as long as you have the desk space or a strong monitor arm. This wide monitor also isn't cheap and even with the discount and added coupon will drain almost a grand from your bank account.

Usually retailing for its MSRP of $1,599, the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 (G93SC) is available for $999 after being discounted to $1,099 and with an added $100 coupon brings the price down to its lowest-ever price from November of last year.?

What makes this monitor so special is not only its impressive size but also the QD-OLED panel with a ?5120 x 1440 pixel resolution. With an OLED screen, you're getting a 0.03ms response time, amazing blacks and contrasts, and eye-popping colors. This monitor can also drive a 240Hz refresh rate if your graphics card is powerful enough and with its 1800R curve, the screen will wrap around your vision and promote better immersion in your games.

This 49-inch G93SC super-wide monster from Samsung has a discount and a $100 coupon, making it equal to its lowest-ever price from Amazon. It's still nowhere near a budget option, but if you've got the money and of course the desk space, this is an attractive price for such a large monitor.?View Deal

One of my favorite features of this monitor is the ability to still treat the monitor as if you have two screens on your desk. The 'Picture-by-Picture' mode splits the screen in half and lets you use two inputs at their native resolution, so you could have your PC and a console connected and view both sources at the same time - a great feature for streaming game content for example. For connectivity, you have 1 x HDMI 2.1 port, 1 x DisplayPort 1.4, 1 x micro HDMI 2.1, and a USB Hub.
