To take those tales and drag them into the Dying World of MÖRK BORG.

I chose to take something from Scottish Gaelic legend, a creature that offered something a little more than just another monster to defeat, the Cü-Síth, a fairy hound capable of entering the underworld as well as the lands of the Fey.

Free download on Itch.io provides you with the background, stats and plot hooks you need to slip something different into your death metal fantasy adventures.

If you like it, (even if you don't), do be sure to check out the other entries in the jam. As of this evening there are about forty entries to download - and with plenty more time to run there should be lots more folklore inspired fantasy fun to download over the next few weeks from some really creative individuals.

Hope you like my effort.

Derek.

Remembering Culloden

 13. Last Thursday, 16th April, was the anniversary of a battle took which place on Drumossie Moor in 1746, the last pitched battle to be fought on British soil. It was here that the Jacobites lost their final stand against Government forces, and the quest to restore the Stuarts to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland was effectively ended. This year, instead of pipes and flags, and people paying their respects the field was quiet. But it was still remembered.

 14.

 15.

 16.

 17. John Roy Stewart was a military commander In the army of Prince Charles Stuart, but he was also a poet. Often referred to now as "The Bard of Culloden". His poem The Day of Culloden recounts the events of the fateful battle from a man who witnessed it first hand.

 18.

 19.

 20.

 21. The Day of Culloden (“Latha Chuil-Lodair”)

 22.

 23. Great are the depths of my sorrow

 24.

 25. As I mourn for the wounds of my land;

 26.

 27. My King, stay strong so you are able

 28.

 29. All of our foes to withstand;

 30.

 31. Over us Duke William is a tyrant,

 32.

 33. A vile rogue with hate for us all;

 34.

 35. As foul as foetid black straw

 36.

 37. That strangles wheat in its thrall.

 38.

 39.

 40.

 41. I weep for handsome fair Charlie

 42.

 43. At the mercy of George and his brutes,

 44.

 45. While around us corrupted and sullied

 46.

 47. Are justice and honour and truth;

 48.

 49. But, Lord, should you but will it,
T

 50.

 51. he kingdom will come back into our hands,

 52.

 53. Through a leader royal and righteous

 54.

 55. Who reigns fairly over our land.

 56.

 57.

 58.

 59. I weep for the Army of Tartan

 60.

 61. Now scattered and spread everywhere,

 62.

 63. Battered by England’s base villains

 64.

 65. Beaten by methods unfair;

 66.

 67. Though in battle they were victorious

 68.

 69. It was through no courage or merit of theirs,

 70.

 71. But westering winds and rains that swept on us

 72.

 73. From the lowlands, to our despair.

 74.

 75.

 76.

 77. It’s a pity we were not in England

 78.

 79. But close to our homes as we fought,

 80.

 81. For we’d never have scattered so quickly,

 82.

 83. Were it not for the homes that we sought;

 84.

 85. Spells and witchcraft were cast upon us

 86.

 87. As we marched into battle in gloom,

 88.

 89. Across the bleak moor were we scattered

 90.

 91. As ill fortune led to our doom.

 92.

 93.

 94.

 95. I weep for each of the white corpses

 96.

 97. That lie on the side of the hill,

 98.

 99. Abandoned, unhonoured, unshrouded,

 100.

 101. Untouched and unburied still;

 102.

 103. And those who survived the disaster

 104.

 105. Are shackled in ships across seas,

 106.

 107. For the Whigs now are the masters,

 108.

 109. To do with us just as they please.

 110.

 111.

 112.

 113. Oppressed are we now by strangers,

 114.

 115. Great the shame and disgrace that we feel

 116.

 117. As our homes and our country are plundered

 118.

 119. Crushed under a foreigner’s heel;

 120.

 121. Castle Dounie’s a fire-blackened ruin,

 122.

 123. Dishonoured its bare silent walls;

 124.

 125. The wheel of fortune is changing

 126.

 127. With no comfort found in her halls.

 128.

 129.

 130.

 131. I never thought that my own eyes

 132.

 133. Would see things as they are now,

 134.

 135. As if the tempests of Springtime

 136.

 137. Had laid all the wild flowers low;

 138.

 139. Fortune’s wheel has turned against us,

 140.

 141. Many brave men are now in distress,

 142.

 143. May God look with kindness and mercy,

 144.

 145. And save them from foreign duress.

 146.

 147.

 148.

 149. Our leaders that day betrayed us.

 150.

 151. And treacherously spilt of our blood;

 152.

 153. I curse Lord George seven times over,

 154.

 155. For leading us into the mud;

 156.

 157. Two choices were at his disposal,

 158.

 159. That flatterer of merciless guile,

 160.

 161. And he chose the road of deception,

 162.

 163. Concealed by a treacherous smile.

 164.

 165.

 166.

 167. As long as we live, till our days’ end

 168.

 169. We will mourn the men we have lost,

 170.

 171. Valiant and brave-hearted heroes

 172.

 173. Who fought fiercely with sword, shield and cross.

 174.

 175. Had the gale not been in our faces

 176.

 177. We’d have charged with no fear at the foe,

 178.

 179. And scattered the English before us

 180.

 181. And ended our poor country’s woe.

 182.

 183.

 184.

 185. I am plunged into grief and sadness

 186.

 187. As I weep bitter tears all alone,

 188.

 189. Watching the host of black roses

 190.

 191. Devour the wheat of the land;

 192.

 193. Savage Munros and wild Sutherlanders

 194.

 195. Crawl towards us like ravenous hounds,

 196.

 197. Scouring moors, clefts and hollows

 198.

 199. Their gluttony knowing no bounds.

 200.

 201.

 202.

 203. I weep for the land you’ve invaded,

 204.

 205. The scorched earth you’ve left in your wake,

 206.

 207. Crops stripped from our fields and hillsides,

 208.

 209. No seeds sown so the land may awake;

 210.

 211. You’ve taken the hens from the hen roosts,

 212.

 213. Stolen our last spoonful of soup away,

 214.

 215. May the curse of the fig tree be upon you,

 216.

 217. From root to top may you wither away.

 218.

 219.

 220.

 221. Now we are reduced to mere outlaws,

 222.

 223. And must take to the hills and the glens,

 224.

 225. Without sport, without mirth or diversion,

 226.

 227. With no songs, joy or pleasures of sense;

 228.

 229. With little to feed or to warm us

 230.

 231. On the rocks where the cold mist lies,

 232.

 233. Hearing the haunting hoot of the barn owl

 234.

 235. As of death and disaster she cries.

 236.

 237.

 245.

 246.

 247.

 248. I've been printing 3D terrain models for a couple of years, my biggest project by a long way has been a set of dungeon tiles specifically for a game I ran at the ReuniCon games day in Brighton last year. I have long been a fan of the Dragonlock models produced by Fat Dragon Games, which I've used extensively including in the model in the picture below.

 249.

 250.

 251.

 252.

 253.

 254.

The Hidden Dungeon - ReuniCon 2019 (Dragonlock tiles)

 255.

 256.

 257.

 258.

 259. With the popularity of websites such as Thingiverse and MyMiniFactory which allow creators to share, or market their own patterns the opportunity to pick up really great quality model files to print at home has truly exploded. This in turn has led companies which would usually be happy to sell you the final models to consider offering .STL files for sale through their normal digital channels. To a certain extent this clearly makes pretty good commercial sense, but comes with the obvious risks of revenue loss through file sharing.

 260.

 261.

 262.

 263. Fallout: Wasteland Warfare

 264. Among the more recent companies to enter the print at home miniature market are Modiphius with a range of model terrain for their tabletop success Fallout: Wasteland Warfare.
265.

 266.

 267.

 268.

 269. There are currently four terrain packs available for those who want to create their own Fallout Vault. A starter pack, containing around twenty printable files and providing walls, supports, junctions, doorways and most importantly the crucial main Vault Gear door. The second pack is a set of upgraded vault walls with files for utility supports, junctions and elbows, plus breached and collapsed walls, and utility walls and doorways - this pack enhances the possible combinations making the resulting models more interesting and varied. Thirdly there is the Vault Atrium Pack which has files for staircases, balustrades, and adapters allowing you to literally take your terrain to another level. The fourth and most recent pack, the Vault Tec Office Bundle provides you with files to print Heavy Duty Consoles, Modular Shelving, Crates, desks and other miscellaneous items which can be used to bring the vault to life - and to provide some handy cover to cower behind! The packs are priced at £15 for the starter set, £12 each for the walls and atrium expansions and £10 for the office bundle. I have to say that all in all they are well priced, given just how much use you are going to get out of these and bearing in mind that with the right printer and a huge amount of patience there is no limit to the amount of terrain you can produce. As well as the Vault terrain packs there are two other models availain the Fallout range, a Corvega Coupe (with its tyres long gone) and a pre-war armoured personnel carrier.

 270.

 271.

 272. How well do they print?

 273.

 274. The below images are prints from the Vault Tec Office Bundle, they were sliced on Ultimaker Cura using the default settings for the Creality Ender 3. I did have to rotate all of the images through ninety degrees before slicing, but no other adjustments were made to the models. I printed the pieces shown in PLA (PRIMAVALUE "White") as a single model and used a raft to assist in adhesion. The set of eight pieces; (two terminals, three desk parts, a locker, safe and a circular drawer unit) took three hours ten minutes to print, but at least fifteen of those minutes was for the stupidly large raft that I added. Whilst my adapted Ender 3 has no real problems with adhesion I find that when printing collections of pieces with small surface areas on the heated bed, single items may on occasion become dislodged, running the risk of ruining the entire print, a raft is a small price to pay even if it does extend print time. The model details are quite satisfying and the fit of the parts for the desk etc are excellent, they clip together nicely. I'm particularly fond of the computer terminals, the desktop version puts me very much in mind of the terminals in the illustrations of the Paranoia RPG. I was amazed at how cleanly the pieces came away from the raft, the items were not cleaned up in any way in the pictures. I apologise for the appearance of Judge Riley, he was just the miniature nearest to hand and provided a good sense of scale. The wasteland could probably use a judge or two anyway...
275.
276.

 277.

 278.

Mid print- about 2hrs 20 mins.

 283.

Just finished!

 284.

 285.
286.

 287.

 288.

Snapped off of the raft - no other cleanup.

 289.

 290.
291. In the spirit of full disclosure I can confirm that I received a complimentary review copy of the Vault Tec Office Bundle .STL files. I have however purchased the other three packs myself as well as the Corvega Coupe model file, which I am very much looking forward to printing and painting.
292.
293. There are a few observations I would make about the terrain packs generally. Firstly in my opinion, for the purpose of home 3D printing, the .STL files supplied are, in some cases, overly complex. In the Vault starter pack for example there are several files where the mesh (which makes up the printable image) has way in excess of 300,000 triangles which for something relatively simple, like a doorway is really going some. The result of this is that the files are overly large and complex to handle and, depending upon your PC or Mac, may be problematic when slicing using applications such as Cura. This can be overcome by opening them in the editor of your choice, simplifying and re-exporting to .STL yourself. (I would recommend using Meshmixer, its an extremely powerful and yet simple editor from Autodesk - most importantly, it's free). Secondly, it would be nice if some basic printing guidance were to be included, e.g. recommendations for levels of infill, use of supports, orientation and so on. Whilst the variation in home printers makes it difficult to give precise instructions, sharing successful settings can always provide a good baseline. Lastly, and this is really a question of personal preference - I found the wall sections to be a little on the large side, indeed after printing a few test pieces I have decided that I will reduce the prints by 20%, this still gives walls that are slightly taller than those found on the Dragonlock models, and doorways and windows remain suitably sized. This reduction in scale results in a proportionate saving in materials and reduction in print times. Overall I think the models are extremely good, but with some fine tuning could be made simpler for the home print enthusiast. On average I found that file sizes could be reduced from c.16Mb to c.2Mb with no appreciable loss of detail.
294.
295. I see application for the models beyond games of Fallout: Wasteland Warfare and will most certainly use them in other games/settings. Generally the quality is good - possibly too good on occasion, and the price point seems fair for the number and variety of models.
297.

 298. Quick Review

 299.

 300.

 301. There’s another sourcebook out for Star Trek Adventures and this time we’re headed beyond the bounds of the Federation entirely. Having covered the main areas of the Star Trek universe, we’re now through the Bajoran wormhole and into the Gamma Quadrant.

 302.

 303.

 304.

 305. The latest sourcebook in the Star Trek Adventures product line from Modiphius has just been released, this one takes us through the Bajoran wormhole into the Gamma Quadrant. The big anticipation of this sourcebook is in advancing the story and timeline up through the Dominion War.

 306.

 307.

 308.

 309. This book contains a lot of material, despite being perhaps a few pages shorter than the Alpha and Beta Quadrant sourcebooks it just feels packed. As you would expect the main chapter, chapter two, focusses on the Gamma Quadrant itself, opening with the Personal Diary of Quark - This is an example of one of the things I personally like most about the STA sourcebooks - these pieces of narrative flavour. They provide important scene setting and context for the detailed geography and history which follow.

 310.

 311.

 312.

 313.

 314.

 315.
316. The rest of the chapter is made up of around 14 pages about The Dominion, It provides concise and fact packed historic details about the changelings and the foundation of the Dominion for their protection. There are 10 pages describing the Dominion Worlds, all described in good detail with between half and a whole page each. There are a further 14 pages on the The Gamma Quadrant and finishes up with a detailed description of the background and events of The Dominion War. This section feels very different from other material presented in the Alpha and Beta Quadrant sourcebooks. There is an incredible level of detail covering everything from the first contact with the Dominion’s subjects, to meeting the Founders, to the infiltration of the Alpha Quadrant by changelings, the Battle of the Omarion Nebula, the war between the Klingons and the Federation, and leading onto the Dominion expansion through the Bajoran Wormhole.

 317.

 318.

 319.

 320.

 321.

 322. I’ll be honest - it makes me want to go back and watch the entire seven series of Deep Space Nine all over again! If you wanted to, it would entirely possible to run a campaign following the events of the Dominion war battle by battle. To this end the books second chapter concludes with the state of the war “at the moment” (end of 2374). With additional detail of the events of 2375 as the war concludes and how characters could be created to reflect the effects of the war.

 323.

 324.

 325.

 326. Chapter three introduces numerous new species and life path options, So if you’re only expecting the Changelings, then strap in for the; Argrathi, Dosi, Drai, Karemma, Lurians, Paradans, Rakhari, Skreeaa, Son’a, Tosk and the Wadi.
327.
328. Chapter four details the Starships of the Gamma Quadrant, divided into those of the Dominion and those of the Dominion War. It is this second group of ships that provide the real interest. Not presented simply as generic ships of various classes this section contains ships with full descriptions and statistics as well as histories and details of their capabilities. This includes the U.S.S. Galaxy, U.S.S. Prometheus, U.S.S. Sutherland, U.S.S. Lakota, U.S.S. Valiant, and U.S.S. Majestic and there are stats for K’t’inga-class and a D’Deridex-class refits for Starfleet’s Klingon and Romulan allies. Also presented are rules of a “Frakenstein Fleet” essentially for creating unique custom ships, these rules effectively allow you to take scrapyard starships through your own personal Federation “chop shop”. In simple terms these rules allow you to take a spaceframe and swap out out one of that design’s default Talents replacing it with a Talent from a secondary starship. I love this idea and I’m sure those that I play with regularly would be very keen to get their hands on a much more custom ship.

 329.

 330.

 331.

 332. The final chapter of this book is given over to Encounters and Adversaries opening with details of the Bajoran Wormhole and the Orbs of the Prophets. As you would expect there are encounter hooks and a range of NPC stats for the Gamma Quadrant. You are given a range of famous characters which you can to drop into your personal Dominion War campaign (e.g. General Martok, Kai Winn, Gul Dukat)

 333.

 334.

 335.

 336. In conclusion this is, in my opinion, an exceptionally well written and edited source book. It covers a huge amount of material in a practical manner making it comprehensive and coherent as well as being accessible.

 337.

 338.

 339.

 340. This is the first sourcebook that has made me think that there is so much to run at that it could be difficult to bring all of this scope into a cohesive campaign setting for my games - but as you read through it you realise how well presented this tidal wave of material is being presented. If you are interested in the events of Deep Space Nine and in setting a game in the Dominion War then this book has everything that you could want or need.

 341.

 342.

 343.

 344. For the purpose of full disclosure I will state that I received a complimentary PDF review copy of The Gamma Quadrant Sourcebook, however less than ten minutes of flicking through it sent me straight to the website to place my personal order for a physical copy.
355.
356. Yesterday (17/12/2019) Modiphius Entertainment announced the opening of pre-orders for the Fall of London Chronicle for Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition.
357.
358. Fall of London is the first chronicle from Modiphius Entertainment for Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition, a sizeable 260-page hardback book. Set in London in 2012, player characters dubbed “Heralds of the Sun” journey across London to retrieve five mystical objects that once belonged to Mithras, the most powerful of the Kindred in the British Isles. Their actions could result in the restoration of Mithras to his full glory or see him cast down into the darkness from whence he came. As players explore this iconic city they uncover clues from their past connected to the city’s history, meet canonical characters, and clash with the Second Inquisition who intend to burn London’s Kindred to ash.
359.
360. The book has been developed by an exceptionally strong and talented team; Matthew Dawkins (Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition, Camarilla, Anarch), and Steffie De Vaan (Beckett’s Jyhad Diary, Anarch, A Thousand Years of Night), with writers Andrew Peregrine (Doctor Who, Victoriana, V20, Star Trek Adventures), Hilary Sklar (They Came From Beneath The Sea!), Kira Magrann (Legacy: Life Among the Ruins, Hearts on Trial, Changeling the Lost Second Edition Jumpstart), Klara Horskjær Herbøl, (Chicago by Night, Changeling: The Dreaming) and Mike Nudd (Vampire: Prince of the City).
361.
362. The hardcover book will cost you £34.99 and should hit the shelves and your mailbox in March 2020. As has become customary these days anyone who places a pre-order for Fall of London will receive an advance PDF copy of the book, as soon as they place their pre-order for a hardcover copy.
363.
This adventure supplement contains nine missions exploring the strangest and most challenging missions on dangerous planets and weird environments. Strange New Worlds follows on from the huge success of the first adventure compendium These Are the Voyages, and provides fans with missions from the Enterprise, Original Series, and Next Generation eras. Some incredible writing talent was recruited, from well-known Star Trek fiction writers such as Christopher L. Bennett (The Captain’s Oath, Greater Than the Sum), to roleplaying game luminaries like Jason Bulmahn (Pathfinder 2nd Edition). Priced at £29.99.
 373.

float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">Every year I know that ReuniCon is coming up as soon as I start to get emails from publishers and games producers/writers looking to give their products one last push ahead of GenCon and the Ennie awards. One of the real pleasures in being part of the organisation of something like ReuniCon is getting to line up the games that we will be playing.

<table cellpadding="0" Forbidden Lands, from Fria Ligan has been nominated in five categories and for my money it stands out as having a real good chance of picking up some of those prizes (nominated in Best Setting, Best Cartography, Product of the Year, Best Rules, Best Production Values).

What I like about Forbidden Lands is the fact that it really is a new take on an old theme, it feels truly "Old School", it evokes that classic fantasy genre but is actually fresh and different. Of course in a four hour slot at ReuniCon I'm not going to do its campaign features much justice, we won't be troubling the rules for creating character strongholds or what characters get up to between their adventures. But hopefully I'll still do the game justice and give players a feel for something new that many won't yet have played.

I'm also doing something which is very out of the ordinary for me; I'm bringing along some miniatures and really investing some time in tabletop battle maps, normally this isn't my thing, but again its great to have an opportunity to do something new and fresh at an event like ReuniCon.

You can find full details of the Ennie awards and cast your votes here: http://www.ennie-awards.com/blog/ Unfortunately voting closes on the 21st July, before ReuniCon - so you won't get a chance to play in my game before deciding how to cast your vote. But do take a few minutes to have a look at the nominees and vote, it can make a real difference to the success of new games and can really open up opportunities for new writers, publishers and product lines.

Derek.

Modiphius on Twitch

I recently found out that there is an official Modiphius live stream on Twitch, that whilst running for a while has just started to grow and gain momentum. I'm a big fan of games producers and publishers doing this kind of thing - it is true that there is no better way to learn a new game than to play it, but a Twitch stream or youtube videos come a real close second. I find them really informative and a great help when picking up a new system or preparing for a game that I haven't run before.
375.
376. You can find the Modiphius stream at https://www.twitch.tv/modiphius. Currently they stream every Wednesday at 16.30 BST (08.30 PST / 11.30 EST) and every Friday at 15.00 BST (07.00 PST / 10:00 EST) - in truth, as a working man in the UK these aren't the most convenient times, but that said you can always catch up here, much of their content is also crossposted on Youtube where you will also find a lot of other excellent content.
377.
378. On Wednesdays the Twitch stream focusses on live sessions of their RPG games such as Conan, Star Trek and John Carter of Mars and Friday is Fallout Fridays where they stream games of the Fallout Wasteland Warfare miniature game.
379.
380. This weeks stream, which I did catch was the Conan Adventures RPG hosted by their excellent in house GM Lloyd - we've had the pleasure, in the past of Lloyd attending ReuniCon in Brighton and he is a really excellent GM (you're welcome back any time Lloyd - 7th September this year!).
381.
382. If you get a chance do check out the stream its a great way to get a feel for how the games run, with the people who know them best.
387. RAWDEAL is an RPG system that came about largely by accident. No dice required, just a regular pack of 52 playing cards. A first release draft of the system rules is available to download for free on the miskatonic.co.uk website.
388.
389. RAWDEAL is an RPG system which uses a standard pack of playing cards rather than dice. Rules are relatively simple using a card cutting mechanism to resolve actions.
390.
391. You can download RAWDEAL from the Library page.
392.
393. This is a first release draft of the system rules, currently in playtesting, version one is expected to be available for release through this site in June 2019.
394.
395. RAWDEAL is a setting agnostic set of system rules and does not include any setting or background details. Two separate books are under development to enhance RAWDEAL, REVOLVER the Wild West setting, and ELDRITCH, a Lovecraftian horror sourcebook including rules for the effects of fear, horror and insanity. These are anticipated to be available as first drafts in September and December 2019 respectively.

E.D:RPG Elite Dangerous Roleplaying Game

Like so many who were intrigued by the Elite Dangerous RPG I have very fond memories of spending way too many hours sitting in front of my BBC Micro playing Elite back in the 80's. It was a groundbreaking computer game at the time, the wireframe graphics, the sense of movement, the freedom to go where you wanted and to choose your own path within the game. Be a bounty hunter, smuggler, trader, go rogue and be hunted by the forces of law enforcement. The idea that you could control your own story was really something new. Since then Elite has seen a couple of resurgences, most recently making full use of the benefits of online gaming to take the immersive gaming experience a step further.
396.

 397.

 398.

 399. So would there actually be a market for a tabletop RPG set in the Elite universe? While I loved the idea on a nostalgic level I was sceptical. Roleplayer's are generally a very loyal bunch; to bring a game like Elite to the table you need to have something that hasn't really been there before. What I mean is, if I want to play a science fiction game I've already got plenty to choose from. Closest in concept to Elite is probably Traveller a massively well established RPG with a fanatical fan base. Or if thats not your bag, and you are of a certain age, then maybe it was SpaceMaster. Or more recently MindJammer for a trans-human excursion into the reaches of the universe, or the highly acclaimed Coriolis: The Third Horizon which is perhaps more closely analogous to Elite. Then there is Modiphius's latest franchise Star Trek Adventures or even Starship Troopers for those that want the familiar and well established universe that may be one of the appeals of playing a game like Elite. The list goes on and if you are feeling creative then there is no end to what you can do with systems such as Fate, GURPS, Savage Worlds. So would EDRPG just be a niche curiosity? Or would it have the legs to take its place amongst the best?

 400.

 401.

 402.

 403. I've had my copy of the books now for a good few weeks, the PDF for a while longer. I'll confess that I haven't played it and so there will be limits to my opinions on the game. What I have done, as I always do with any new game is to "test run" the mechanics, I've generated characters, tested the combat system and so on. The kind of things I would do for any game that I was thinking of running for a group and my review here will be based on that alone.

 404.

 405.

 406.

 407. For the benefit of full disclosure I want to make it clear that I am in no way affiliated, or connected with Spidermind Games. I have received nothing in the way of an inducement for this review and the books and materials reviewed were bought with my own hard earned cash - no freebies here (although for future reference I'm always open to review copies!)

 408.

 409.

 410.

 411.

 412.

 413. I'm a lucky owner of the EDRPG box set which contains the core rulebook and four supplements; Military, Espionage, Super Traders and Exploration. Originally this looked like it was going to be a slipcase, but for one reason or another the decision was made to swap it to a proper box. I'm more than happy with this - the box is really sturdy, comfortably holds the four books and I'll probably squeeze other bits in there over time. For the purpose of this short review I'm going to stick to the core rules. Suffice to say that the four sourcebooks are slim softback books of around sixty five pages each.
414.
415. The artwork on the box - as throughout the entire game is superb. Lots of custom artwork and some which seems to possibly be taken from the Elite Dangerous console game itself and maybe then enhanced for printing, but in any case its really vivid and evocative of the game. The style and layout of the book is crisp and clean without being wasteful - I've seen a few books recently where by time you take out the lines, headers footers and text boxing the content could shrink into something half the weight. EDRPG isn't in this camp. There is a great balance of the aesthetic and the "useful" readability.

 416.

 417.

 418.

 419. The core rulebook is a hardback running to 365+ pages, admittedly there are about a dozen or so pages of character, ship and other sheets. (Who the hell photocopies anything these days?) There are also a few pages of the names of Kickstarter backers, which has pretty much become the norm.

 420.

 421.

 422.

 423. The basic mechanics of the game system in EDRPG are about as simple as you would want. Everything that you need to roll for has a difficulty value, low is easy - for example 3 and any fool should be able to do it, 10 - well fingers crossed that your good at this! You basically roll a d10, a task check is made by rolling your d10 and adding the "tens" value of the related skill to the roll. If you beat the Difficulty value of the task then, success! Opposed rolls, regardless of whether its another character or an NPC, are simply that - you both roll, and highest total wins. Combat is a variation of the opposed roll using offence versus defence. But more of all that in a moment.
424.
425. When you are as long in the tooth as I am and have been roleplaying for so long that you actually don't care to remember when you started the hobby there are parts of any new book that you tend to gloss over. What is an RPG? How challenging it can be for a first time GM. What's the aim, how do I win? ED:RPG deals with these, and other questions well,. Oftentimes these parts of an RPG book feel like generic afterthoughts, little more than filler. But in ED:RPG it is clear that considerable thought has gone into making this game accessible to new players and GMs alike. Throughout the core book there are useful snippets for the new player or GM that don't feel intrusive or patronising and are clearly more than just filler.
426.

 427.

 428. Anyway, back to the combat, which is the domain of the third chapter of the core book. There are three situational variations on combat in ED:RPG. Firstly we have personal combat; both ranged and melee. Secondly, starship combat. Every character in ED:RPG has their own ship and a big part of the game will take place in space. Finally there is combat between vehicles (on the ground). All three use the same basic mechanic noted above. Initiative is the result of a die roll, personal combatants can move and take an action and wounds and healing are covered adequately. What I did find interesting and something that will add, literally, another dimension to combat is the lack of artificial gravity in ED:RPG. Whilst space stations, (and really big ships), achieve some sense of gravity through rotation it is not prevalent, or assumed in the convenient way of many SF games. Starship combat is given a comprehensive treatment in the chapter, but it remains relatively simple. A big part of what makes this effective is the relative close combat nature of much of the combat, retaining the feel and atmosphere of the dogfights of the original computer game. Now I'm not a big fan of maps in my combat scenarios I like combat to be descriptive and freeform, usually the concept of employing miniatures will evoke a huge sigh and a possibly even lead to me rolling my eyeballs. But ED:RPG is sympathetic to this and it is clear to see that they have made efforts to accommodate both styles of play. However, I will concede that using some kind of mapping may prove invaluable in the three dimensions of space combat. Vehicular combat, follows the same principles, and once you have mastered the basics slipping between the three forms of combat should be seamless in gameplay.
429.
430. The real unique selling point of ED:RPG is that, in keeping with the computer game, every character has their own ship which you can customise with a plentiful array of upgrades. You will start out with one of a small selection of starter ships and go from there. (Or alternatively you can start from scratch and build your own with a limited starting budget). You'll need to choose your ship and its upgrades carefully as not only does this matter for general gameplay but it has an impact on your options for progression "off screen" between adventures. During the downtime between adventures your characters are assumed to go about their day to day business - just without the extraordinary events which befall them during your adventures. This gives them an opportunity to use their ship to earn extra money, the type of work you can take on is limited by your ship. Other games have similar "off screen" development, and in a campaign game it can work particularly well.
431.
432. One thing I particularly liked is the concept of character development. This is handled in a "improve it by doing it" way - not dissimilar to games like Call of Cthulhu - where the first time you use a skill in a session it gets a check mark, at the end of the adventure these skills increase by 1. I like this because it means your character develops in a way that reflects her experiences rather than through any kind of arbitrary and sudden leaps in ability.
433.
434. Whilst there is undoubtedly a lot to like about ED:RPG I do have a few gripes. The biggest one being that whilst the core book contains a lot of setting description there is a lack of any kind of pre generated map or star system. Whilst this may be in keeping with the "sandbox" build your own philosophy of the game it would have been a big help for GMs who want to dive in. You are going to have to do quite a bit of homework and prep before you can get playing. To me this just feels like a missed opportunity, it would have not only allowed people to get up and running quickly but could have given an example of what good looks like for people building their own.
435.
436. In summary, the ED:RPG core rule book presents a well rounded and self contained game. If you aren't already a regular SF Roleplayer and you fancy something different then you could certainly do worse than add this to your games shelf. If you are already an Elite Dangerous fan (or even a good old 1980's Elite fan) then there is enough in here to make you want to play it. If you are already a SF RPG player then I'm not sure ED:RPG is going to change your view sufficiently to replace whatever system you are currently using. In some ways there is much missing; for example no droids or exciting alien races.
437.
438. The acid test for me is having read it, do I want to run it? The answer is a resounding yes, it gnaws at my nostalgia genes and for some one shot easy play, combat laden space opera, it will make a good change.
439.
440. If I gave stars out of five for games, which I don't, then this would be a 4/5 and I look forward to playing trough the free quick start/play test "The Worst Intentions" which can be downloaded from the Modiphius store here - it gives you everything you need for a taste of ED:RPG, without spending a penny, albeit with some slimmed down rules.
450.

 451. Mechatron is the second major expansion to the award-winning post-apocalyptic tabletop roleplaying game, Mutant Year Zero (MYZ) by Free League Publishing. Just like the first expansion Genlab Alpha, Mechatron both stands alone as game setting and yet integrates completely with what has come before allowing youth play games either solely focussed around the robot characters of Mutant Mechatron or to bring those robot characters into your wider MYZ campaign.
452.
453.
454.
455. Well, its been a while since the PDF was released to backers of the Kickstarter, and its even been a while since the physical book landed on my doorstep. I’ve had a good chance to read and enjoy Mutant Mechatron - but, I haven’t had time to play it, and I really wanted to before I wrote any kind of review. That however doesn’t look like happening for a while, so rather than wait any longer I’m going to write about what I’m hoping for when I do get around to running it. That way I might get to follow up with another post sometime down the road.
456.
457.
458.
459. The first thing that i’m looking forward to is seeing players come to grips with a different set of motivations. MYZ was about survival in a strange world, Genlab Alpha was about escaping to freedom. Mechatron is about self discovery, about coming to grips with who your character really is and what their place in the world is.
460.
461.
462.
463. In Mutant Mechatron you play as subservient robots following the edicts of NODOS, the central intelligence that directs and controls everything in the Mechatron-7 facility. There is no reason to question your orders, or not until very recently when something different happened and you suddenly became self-aware. now you are beginning to question things, big things like, why? Why do we continue to make repairs to this underwater dome? Why would we think that the humans are ever coming back? Why should you care if they do or don’t? Is there anything outside of the Mechatron-7? Are there others who think like you?
464.
465.
466.
467. Mainly you continue to work and do as instructed because that is how you continue to get the power you need to survive, you work as directed and receive payment in units of power, this in turn you can use yourself or trade with other robots. Without power your circuits will fail and you will not be able to function, and suddenly that seems very important to the new self aware you.
468.
469.
470.
471. You are also part of a hive mind, connected, one that sees this kind of “thinking” as subversive, rebellious, faulty programming. You could rebel, disconnect, drop off the grid. But then, you will lose your guaranteed supply of power.
472.
473.
474.
475. The second thing I like is the “Ghost In The Machine” campaign, a sequence of scenarios which introduce the robot concepts, outlines the world which they inhabit and provides all of the necessary background and context without feeling rules heavy or laboured. It won’t be exactly to everyones taste, but I like what I read, there is enough there to cover all the key bases and provide me with the creative space to make it my own as a GM.
476.
477.
478.
479. Thirdly, the setting - The setting itself, a huge facility hidden underneath the ocean. Mechatron-7 is beautifully described and detailed with an amazing map. Its the Mechatron equivalent to the concept of the Ark in MYZ. But whereas your Ark is constantly being upgraded and improved the Mechatron 7 collective is slowly falling apart. No matter how many robots work until their servos burn out it cannot be saved. It is only a matter of time before you will have to find your way out.
480.
481.
482.
483. Finally I really like the way that Fria Ligan have balanced the need for new mechanics for robot characters with the existing ruleset. It doesn’t feel fudged, everything is complementary and builds on what you already know. There are new concepts; character creation takes a different route allowing you to “build” your robot piece by piece starting with a basic chassis and adding a head, torso and undercarriage. The choices you make affect the robots attribute scores: Servo (Strength), processor (Wits) and Network (Empathy). You get to select the Programs you have installed (effectively your skills), Secondary Functions (which are akin to MYZ talents). Your choice of components also affects your armour and the number of Module Slots (these are analogous to MYZ mutations of Genlab animal powers). Essentially it is the same game, sympathetically tailored to give robot characters meaning and to be sufficiently different.
484.
485.
486.
487. The book itself runs to some 235 pages and is printed and bound to the same high quality as other core rulebooks from Fria Ligan. As well as all of the necessary background material and rules there are a couple of notable extra bits. I’ve mentioned the campaign “Ghost In The Machine” which is around seventy-five pages in the core book, but its also worth mentioning the last section of etc book which focusses attention on “Robots In The Zone”, what happens next. including how to incorporate robot characters into the MYZ world, including existing MYZ campaigns. There are plenty of ideas and hooks provided for the games master that ensures that there is lots of use Mutant Mechatron beyond the initial campaign.
488.
489.
490.
491. I’m really looking forward to playing this and I’ll be sure to report back once I have.
492.
Freeze Frame – Historic Polar Images

 493.

 494.
495. I find myself once again contemplating running the At The Mountains of Madness campaign for a small group and this time we will all be extremely geographically dispersed and playing over a virtual tabletop using Roll20. Whilst I was once upon a time quite sceptical about playing tabletop games online I have slowly but surely come to accept it - but maybe more on that in another post.
496.
497. As always I like to ensure that I have good props and handouts and on this occasion I thought it would be good if I could find some photographs from the period to set the scene and give people a feel for what Arctic exploration during the period was really like. What I stumbled across was Freeze Frame a fantastic online repository of Historic Polar Images, 1845-1982 from the Scott Polar Research Institute.
498.
499. The Scott Polar Research Institute in the University of Cambridge holds a world-class collection of photographic negatives illustrating polar exploration from the nineteenth century onwards. Freeze Frame is the result of a two-year digitisation project that brings together photographs from both Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Here you can discover the polar regions through the eyes of those explorers and scientists who dared to go into the last great wildernesses on earth.
500.
501. Detailed catalogue entries are provided for each image. All image captions are taken from original sources, where known. In digitising this resource the Scott Polar Research Institute has enabled browsing through the collection by date, expedition, or photographer, or by searching the content directly. Documents relating to the digitisation and web development process may be accessed via the project tab.
502.
503. The Freeze Frame project is funded as part of the JISC digitisation programme and is hosted by the University of Cambridge .
509. So, it hasn't taken too long and we have posted the first few items of the older, more popular content that we have hosted on miskatonic.co.uk over the last few years. In the library you will now find
533.

 534. Since its inception in 2000, miskatonic.co.uk has been through a number of iterations and revisions, but has only been "off air" for a few weeks in all that time. Most recently we were the victim of hackers who attacked one of the plugins in our wordpress site and corrupted many of our posts linking them to some very unsavoury content.
535.
536. So here we are again, rebooting the site with a view to making it a little bit more secure, more cost effective and less time intensive to manage. Given the corrupted posts we have ditched almost all of the blog content and will be starting from scratch - with this, our first new post - initially we were upset about this, but on reflection who cares about a long dead kickstarter or a review of something which has since been revised? No we think a clean start is the way to go.
537.
538. We are also going to simplify things a little; focus on what we really like doing. So the blog will be restricted to a few simple categories. We will have a news category, for things like this announcement and other similar content about miskatonic - maybe it will be pointers to new content in the library (see later), but generally it will be "about" this website. We are also going to stick with a category for reviews - there possibly won't be as many as we had, but from time to time I think that there is something out there that deserves a review (be it a good one or not). Kickstarters will get their own category - its hard to review a kickstarter, but I like to flag those which I think are worthy or have significance for the roleplaying hobby. Then finally there will be a category for projects. We had a lot of interest in the build a dungeon project and that's almost complete now so we may try and revisit that series, but in general this will be a category to share what I'm currently working on.
539.
540. Beyond the blog we will be rebuilding the Library Stacks - this might take a little longer to do as I need to think about file hosting, making stuff easily presentable and simple to maintain. we have some ideas about this so you shouldn't have to wait too long. The aim will be to make sure that our more popular downloads are available quickly (Ctthulian Charades, Savage worlds weapons cards and so on).
541.
542. Anyway, miskatonic.co.uk "The Home of Fearful Imagination" is undergoing a bit of a reboot between now and the end of August - feel free to visit us over this period, but don't be surprised if you see lots of changes in that time, or if there isn't much in the way of new content.
543.
544. Thanks for sticking with us,
545.
