In the wake of Spain’s recent catastrophic blackout, U.S. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has warned the country could face similar chaos due to overreliance on intermittent renewable energy and misguided government policies. Speaking on the All-In podcast, Burgum cited Spain’s grid collapse, which left millions stranded in darkness following a rapid shift to renewables, as a cautionary tale for America. “You cannot run a grid on solar or wind alone,” Burgum emphasized, criticizing Biden administration policies that favor renewables while sidelining stable power sources like coal and nuclear. With states like Texas and the Southeast facing heightened winter reliability risks, the warnings underscore a growing divide over energy security and climate priorities.

Spain’s blackout crisis: A harbinger for the U.S.?

Spain’s April 28 grid failure, which trapped commuters in subways, halted flights, and disrupted hospitals, began with celebrations just weeks prior. On April 12, the country shut down its final coal plant—a milestone in transitioning to renewable energy. By April 19, officials hailed hitting 100% renewable energy production for a weekday. But within days, solar energy’s inherent instability — coupled with reduced inertia from nuclear and natural gas plants facing closures—caused the grid to falter. Michael Shellenberger, an energy policy analyst, noted that Spain prioritized deploying renewables over maintaining grid stability, leading to a “perfect storm” of physics-defying energy policies.

“Solar and wind are intermittent by definition,” Burgum said, likening the Spanish debacle to a potential U.S. crisis. “Grid operators can’t control when the sun shines or the wind blows, so baseload power is essential to prevent failure during lulls.” The outage caused €1.5 billion ($1.6 billion) in economic losses, leaving European leaders scrambling to reassess energy strategies.

Renewable subsidies over stability?

Burgum’s critique targets Biden’s federal subsidies and regulatory restrictions on traditional energy, arguing they mirror Spain’s missteps. He accused the administration of gambling energy security on “green” goals without addressing grid vulnerabilities. “Every time a coal plant shuts and a wind farm opens, we’re moving closer to the edge,” he said, while defending the Trump administration’s emphasis on pragmatic energy sourcing.

The interview underscores a broader debate over the tension between climate ambition and reliability. States like California and New York have adopted aggressive renewables targets, often paired with closures of nuclear plants, a stable energy source. Burgum called for a return to pragmatic policymaking: “Grid operators need predictability, not idealism. Right now, we’re prioritizing symbolism over safety.”

Risks on the horizon

A 2023 report by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) flagged “unprecedented risks” of power shortages in Texas, New England and the Southeast, citing underinvestment in infrastructure and over reliance on intermittent energy. These regions, including Texas — the nation’s energy hub — face winter cold spells and summer heatwaves exacerbating grid stress.

“It’s not hyperbolic to say blackouts could threaten hospital equipment or force life-saving devices offline,” said a NERC official. Burgum echoed these concerns, linking them to broader geopolitical stakes. “While we’re subsidizing unreliable tech, China is doubling down on nuclear and coal. That’s not just bad for energy — it’s a national security issue.”

Security or sustainability?

Secretary Burgum’s warnings reflect a deepening ideological rift over the future of U.S. energy policy. Spain’s blackout underscores the high stakes of real-world grid physics, forcing a reckoning between climate goals and the reality of maintaining power on demand. As winters grow fiercer and solar-dependent grids wobble, the debate will center on who bears responsibility for keeping the lights on: bureaucrats chasing green targets or engineers prioritizing stability. With summer 2025 looming, Burgum’s message is clear: Without practical reforms, America may soon repeat Spain’s mistake.

President Trump posted on Truth Social, “80% Tariff on China seems right!” while noting that the final decision rests with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

<picture></picture>

The comment lends credibility to an earlier New York Post report suggesting the administration is considering cutting tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to a significantly lower baseline.

Trump also said:

“CHINA SHOULD OPEN UP ITS MARKET TO USA — WOULD BE SO GOOD FOR THEM!!! CLOSED MARKETS DON’T WORK ANYMORE!!!”

<picture></picture>

In markets, S&P 500 futures puked, then recovered some losses. Most of the overnight gains have been erased.

<picture></picture>

Perhaps traders were expecting a higher percentage of tariffs to be removed ahead of Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer’s meeting on Saturday with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Switzerland.

* * *

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and his Chinese counterpart are set to begin the first round of trade talks in Switzerland on Saturday. Traders and analysts are looking to yesterday’s “breakthrough” U.S.-U.K. trade deal as a potential preview of what may be announced over the weekend or early next week—possibly signaling a peak in the ongoing trade war.

According to a source familiar with the discussions, the New York Post reports that the Trump administration is weighing a plan to slash tariffs on Chinese imports from 145% to between 50% and 54%. The same source said levies on neighboring South Asian countries would also be reduced to 25%.

“They are going to be bringing it down to 50% while the negotiations are ongoing,” the source said, referring to tariffs on China.

Here’s more color from NYPost:

Insiders said the 50%-to-54% range — down from the triple-digit level that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said this week “isn’t sustainable” this week — is in keeping with rates that were discussed last month when President Trump met with the bosses of the three biggest retailers in the U.S.

Market participants are considering Thursday’s U.S.-U.K. trade framework as a potential preview of what to expect in upcoming trade announcements—not just with China but with dozens of other countries. The deal hints at broad tariff reductions and expanded market access for American exports, particularly in agriculture, energy, and industrial goods. However, as with the U.K. framework, a baseline 10% tariff appears likely to remain in place.

Last week, Goldman offered some good news: peak trade war.

<picture></picture>

Earlier this week, Goldman chief economist Jan Hatzius told clients, “The mood music with China has improved, and we expect the U.S. tariff rate on China to drop from around 160% to around 60% relatively soon. (China is likely to reduce tariffs on the U.S. by a similar amount.)”

<picture></picture>

Plus, the Milken Institute Global Conference attendees in Beverly Hills on Monday “warmed up” to the tariff environment.

Jay Foreman, CEO of Basic Fun—which manufactures retro toys like Tonka Trucks, Care Bears, and My Little Pony in China—told NYPost that “there will be an adjustment” in tariff policy “by the end of this week or next,” adding that it could begin a surge in orders from China.

An increasing number of cats are being infected with avian influenza (bird flu), causing health officials to panic about a possible human pandemic. University of Maryland scientists are now calling for increased surveillance of avian flu in domestic cats.

11 Cats In Colorado Test Positive For Bird Flu As More Cat Food Is Recalled

This surveillance increase comes after a global review of 20 years of published data reveals a dramatic uptick in feline infections, and the number of ways cats are being infected, after the emergence of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b in other mammals.

“Infections among mammalian species in frequent contact with humans should be closely monitored,” the researchers wrote yesterday in Open Forum Infectious Diseases, according to a report by CIDRAP, The University of Minnesota’s news outlet. “Domestic cats are susceptible to AIV [avian influenza virus] infection and provide a potential pathway for zoonotic spillover to humans.”

“We observed a drastic flux in the number of AIV infections among domestic cats in 2023 and 2024, commensurate with the emergence of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b,” which was consistent with the emergence and increased transmission of the clade in birds and mammals, the authors of the research said. “Interestingly, cases of H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b recently reported by the Colorado Health Department included two indoor-only domestic cats with no known exposure to infected animals. This observation raises concerns regarding new and unknown transmission routes of AIV to domestic cats.”

“The infection of ruminants rules out the predation or scavenging route of transmission in this case and suggests that other routes of transmission are occurring, in addition to cattle-to-cattle transmission,” they added.

So far, the avian influenza has infected only 950 people worldwide, but has killed about half of them. From April 2022 (when cumulative data on US human cases started being collected) to January 2025, the United States has recorded 66 human infections and 1 death, the researchers noted.

First U.S. Human Bird Flu Death Reported

The increase in infections among cats may be attributed to exposure to wild birds. However, indoor cats that had never contacted wild birds have also been infected with avian influenza, puzzling health officials.

In the latest developments along the war-ready Indian-Pakistan border, the Pakistani military says it has downed 25 Indian drones over its territory, while India, in turn, is announcing it thwarted a Pakistani drone and missile attack on its military.

The official Pakistani death toll after the Wednesday missile ‘retaliatory’ attacks on Punjab province and Pakistan-administered Kashmir yesterday is at least 31 killed and dozens more wounded. Heavy artillery fire across the Line of Control (LOC) has remained steady, but the kind of feared wider and out-of-control all-out war has yet to be sparked. Islamabad is now claiming to have killed scores of Indian troops.

Shell hits the main town of Poonch district in Indian-administered Kashmir, AFP

On the other side, the last 48 hours of hostilities has resulted in at least 13 people killed in Indian-administered Kashmir, with others wounded due to Pakistani fire.

India’s ‘Operation Sindor’ to avenge the 26 tourists killed last month’s terror attack has been called an ‘act of war’ by Pakistani leaders. Islamabad has denied any involvement in supporting or harboring the gunmen, amid repeat Indian accusations.

As for the newest major Indian drone attack, it mainly targeted the second-largest city of Lahore, and India’s government hailed that the operation successfully took out air defense radars at several locations. However, Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif rejected this, saying there was no damage, amid an ongoing fog of war where it’s hard for international observers to confirm much.

But as for a much bigger claim which has yet to be confirmed or substantiated, Al Jazeera reports that “Attaullah Tarar, the Pakistani information minister, has said the country’s armed forces have killed 40 to 50 Indian soldiers in the exchanges along the Line of Control dividing Indian- and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.” The assertions were made before legislators in the National Assembly.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri’s latest words suggest New Delhi is still seeking to prevent escalation, claiming that all our air strikes were against “carefully selected terror targets” and that Indian drones and shelling have only hit sites connected to “incidents of cross-border terror in India and terrorist infrastructure.”

And provocatively, he alleged that Pakistan has been “using religious sites as a cover to train terrorists” – which strongly suggests India’s assaults on Pakistan-administered Kashmir will continue, given the presence of armed Islamist factions. Much of this was directed at rejecting Pakistan’s claim that Indian air strikes have damaged the vital Neelam-Jhelum dam.

But the question of disinformation, and the motive for India’s ‘counterterror’ strikes, have been called “domestic theater” by one regional analyst:

Yet as tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors escalate hour by hour, with Pakistan accusing India of launching a wave of drones into its territory on Thursday, military and geopolitical analysts question whether India’s approach serves as a deterrent against armed groups eager to target it. They argue that New Delhi’s actions are more symbolic and aimed at addressing its domestic audience rather than tactical advancement in the so-called “fight against terror”.

“This is all a domestic theatre,” said Ajai Sahni, executive director of South Asia Terrorism Portal (SATP), a platform that tracks and analyses armed attacks in South Asia. “The Indian strikes [in Pakistan] have no deterrent value.”

A steady spread of the border conflict…

Markets in India and Pakistan have again closed in the red, with India’s benchmark stock market indices – the Sensex and Nifty – having fallen around half a percent in trade.

Pakistan’s Karachi Stock Exchange was halted Thursday, with the benchmark KSE100 index losing more than 6% in trade. Amid the deep uncertainty the Indian rupee has slipped more than a percent against the US dollar.

Even if talks proceed, hurdles remain, including China’s demand for a Trump-backed negotiator and potential complications from hardliners like Marco Rubio.

For the first time since the latest escalation in the U.S.-China trade war, Beijing has signaled a willingness to negotiate — but with major conditions. On Friday, May 2, China’s Commerce Ministry confirmed it was evaluating a U.S. offer to discuss President Donald Trump’s aggressive 145 percent tariffs on Chinese goods. While the statement suggests a potential thaw in tensions, Beijing made clear that any talks hinge on Washington dropping its unilateral tariffs and correcting what it calls “erroneous practices.” The development comes as both economies face mounting pressure: China battles slowing growth and deflation, while U.S. businesses reel from supply chain disruptions.

Until now, Chinese officials had dismissed negotiations, insisting the U.S. must first lift tariffs. The latest acknowledgment marks a subtle but significant shift. Behind the scenes, Beijing has already taken steps to ease tensions, exempting key U.S. imports—such as pharmaceuticals and microchips — from retaliatory duties. Analysts see this as a pragmatic move to protect critical industries while avoiding further escalation. (Related: Tariff war escalates: China retaliates with 125% tariffs on U.S. goods, as Xi Jinping warns of “self-isolation” for America.)

The trade war is taking a toll. U.S. economic growth unexpectedly stalled in early 2024, partly due to businesses stockpiling imports ahead of tariffs. Meanwhile, China’s factory activity slumped to its worst level since late 2023, with export orders plummeting. The mutual economic strain may be forcing both sides back to the table—but neither wants to appear weak.

Trump’s tough stance vs. China’s demands

President Trump has repeatedly framed tariffs as leverage to secure fairer trade terms, insisting China must make the first move. Beijing, however, insists Washington must act first by scrapping tariffs. “If we fight, we fight to the end; if we talk, the door is open,” China’s Commerce Ministry declared. The stalemate underscores deep mistrust, with Beijing accusing the U.S. of coercion and Washington alleging years of unfair trade practices.

Even if talks begin, major obstacles remain. China wants a U.S. negotiator with direct backing from Trump to ensure any deal sticks. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s expanded role in the administration — now including national security — could complicate relations, given his hardline stance on China.

While markets rallied on hopes of de-escalation, the path forward is fraught. Both sides face domestic pressures to stand firm, yet the economic costs of prolonged conflict may soon outweigh political posturing. For now, the world watches to see whether these tentative overtures lead to real compromise or another breakdown.

Watch as Gordon Chang says Trump won’t lose his nerve in a trade war with China.

The mass vaccination of poultry in the United States is a possibility, but health officials admit that some challenges remain. A nationwide vaccine strategy to inject all poultry will present some issues that will be difficult to resolve.

Just creating enough injections to get them into every bird hatched in the U.S. will be an uphill battle to begin with. The idea behind the mass vaccination strategy is to “protect the supply chain.”

“So, when we think about these vaccines, more than 30 countries have now implemented some sort of a vaccine strategy since 2005,” said American Farm Bureau Federation Economist Bernt Nelson. “Historically, when countries have done this, this has caused some major trade issues. Importing countries have a concern. They don’t want to risk an imported bird spreading the virus into the local flocks or wildlife.”

According to the Texas Farm Bureau, vaccines pose a logistical challenge. “One of the biggest limiting factors of implementing a vaccine strategy to poultry is that the only vaccines available have to be injected at least two to three times, and with our egg laying flock sitting at about 375 million birds, that’s just not feasible with the labor that’s needed,” Nelson said.

But Nelson also commented that the infections are slowing down anyway, so the possibility of needing a mass vaccination program could be waning. “Kind of looking at a slowdown this time of the year, when we think about what’s happening with our migratory birds, the migrations have slowed down. We’re in nesting season, so there’s a lot less bird movement, and thus we have a lot lower case load of avian influenza,” Nelson said. “That’s about normal for this time of the year. We have had one major detection in the past, you know, week or two, and that was 700,000 egg layers in South Dakota.”

The good news is that the rulers and health officials admit that bird flu is waning. However, they also admit that a mass vaccination plan is possible. So, what will our future look like regarding the bird flu?

The military escalation between India and Pakistan is reaching a breaking point. The countries will have to decide very quickly if they will follow a ceasefire truce or dip into an all-out hot war.

The Indian military has launched a series of strikes against targets in Pakistan and the Pakistan-administered Kashmir region. These attacks were a response to a deadly terrorist assault in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir two weeks ago, the nation’s Defense Ministry has said. Pakistan has already branded the operation an act of “unprovoked aggression.” It has responded with shelling of its own, according to the Indian ministry. Islamabad also said that it reserves the right to respond to India’s actions as it deems appropriate.

Accoridng to a report by RT, the Indian strike killed at least 26 civilians and left 46 people injured, Pakistan’s military spokesman Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said. Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif told GeoTV that the Indian strikes hit civilian areas, including a mosque. Islamabad also branded the strike “unprovoked and illegal aggression.”

Russia has urged both sides to exercise restraint and called for de-escalation. Moscow expressed its hope that India and Pakistan would be able to resolve their differences “through peaceful political and diplomatic means,” the Foreign Ministry said, adding that Russia also “decisively condemns all acts of terrorism.”

Indian Army Responds To “Unprovoked” Firing By Pakistan

The intense rise in tensions began over a week ago when Pakistan alleged that India was planning a “military strike.”

Pakistan Claims India Is Planning A “Military Strike”

The Indian strike was a response to a terrorist attack on tourists at Pahalgam in Kashmir two weeks ago, New Delhi said. A total of 26 people were killed in the incident, according to a report by RT.

This rapidly escalating conflict has the potential to break out into a major military war. We will be watching closely, but hopefully, cooler heads will prevail.

If a large asteroid were heading toward our planet or a nuclear war were imminent, there are underground facilities where our leaders would be able to take shelter in order to ensure that the U.S. government continues to operate. But as far as the general public is concerned, we would be on our own. There are no shelters for us, and we would not be allowed inside the underground facilities where our leaders would be hiding. Surprisingly, we have just learned that the underground facility where congressional leaders took shelter in the aftermath of 9/11 is “getting an upgrade”…

A secretive underground FEMA base where congressional leaders hid following the 9/11 attacks is getting an upgrade.

But what exactly are workers doing at Mount Weather? Well, that’s classified ‒ and the contractors who are doing the work have top secret security clearances.

We don’t know what “upgrades” these contractors are making or why they are making them.

Is something coming?

Do our leaders know something that they aren’t telling us?

I think that it is worth noting that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited Mount Weather just last month…

Mount Weather, which is also known as the High Point Special Facility, has both above- and below-ground facilities as part of its 564-acre site, and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited the complex in early April, posing for photos outside with the complex’s fulltime fire department and armed FEMA security guards.

Obviously Kristi Noem considers whatever is going on at Mount Weather to be so important that she wanted to see it herself.

Of course Mount Weather is not the only underground facility that exists. According to USA Today, Mount Weather is actually “part of a network of underground facilities scattered across the United States designed to protect federal leaders during a crisis”…

Buried in the Blue Ridge Mountains 64 miles west of Washington, D.C., Mount Weather is part of a network of underground facilities scattered across the United States designed to protect federal leaders during a crisis. It takes less than 30 minutes by helicopter to reach Mount Weather from Capitol Hill.

One of our most prominent “continuity of government” facilities is located in Colorado.

The Cheyenne Mountain complex covers more than 5 acres inside Cheyenne Mountain, and it contains 15 buildings.

According to the official NORAD website, the complex is “a hardened command and control center” that is designed to survive a nuclear attack…

At the height of the Cold War in the late 1950s, the idea of a hardened command and control center was conceptualized as a defense against long-range Soviet bombers. The Army Corps of Engineers supervised the excavation of Cheyenne Mountain and the construction of an operational center within the granite mountain. The Cheyenne Mountain facility became fully operational as the NORAD Combat Operations Center on April 20, 1966.

Over the years, the installation came to house elements of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), U.S. Strategic Command, U.S. Air Force Space Command and U.S. Northern Command (USNORTHCOM). Under what became known as the Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center (CMOC), several centers supported the NORAD missions of aerospace warning and aerospace control and provided warning of ballistic missile or air attacks against North America.

The NORAD website also tells us that it was built for a total of 142.4 million dollars in the 1960s…

Groundbreaking: June 19, 1961
Completion: Feb. 6, 1967
As NORAD Combat Operations Center: April 20, 1966
As NORAD alternate Joint Operations Center: May 12, 2008
No. of buildings inside: 15
Complex size: 5.1 acres
Total stone excavated: 693,000 ton sof granite
Mountain height: 9,565 feet
Total construction cost: $142.4 million
Current caretaker: Space Base Delta 1, Peterson Space Force Base (U.S. Space Force)

There are some people that are convinced that Mount Weather and the Cheyenne Mountain complex are just the tip of the iceberg.

Catherine Austin Fitts served as Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development during the first Bush administration, and she is claiming that trillions of taxpayer dollars have been spent to create a vast network of underground facilities…

The federal government has secretly spent trillions building an elaborate network of subterranean “cities” where the rich and powerful can shelter during a “near-extinction event,” a former Bush White House official sensationally claimed.

About 170 such bunkers have been built across the country since 1998 – including some resting beneath the oceans off the US coast, 74-year-old Catherine Austin Fitts told Tucker Carlson during a recent appearance on his podcast.

To back up her claims, Fitts pointed to research by Michigan State University economist Mark Skidmore which shows 21 trillion dollars in unauthorized government spending from 1998 to 2015…

Fitts, 74, who is originally from Philadelphia, cited research by Michigan State University economist Mark Skidmore, who released a report in 2017 stating that he and a team of scholars had uncovered $21 trillion in “unauthorized spending in the departments of Defense and Housing and Urban Development for the years 1998-2015.”

It is interesting to note that this unauthorized spending stopped shortly before President Trump’s first term.

Someone really needs to ask President Trump if these underground facilities actually exist.

It would be fascinating to hear his response.

According to Fitts, the network of secret underground facilities is connected by an extremely sophisticated tunnel system…

And the bases are connected by an elaborate transportation system, she added, while claiming they are powered by a secret energy system known only to the military.

“I’m convinced that this energy exists. If you look at a lot of the really fast ships, flying around the planet, they’re not using classical electricity,” she said, in an apparent reference to a spate of bizarre unidentified aerial phenomena supposedly flying around the skies in recent years.

Those alleged bases are used not just as doomsday bunkers for the elites, Fitts claimed, but also as places for the government to operate “secret” operations like a “secret space program.”

We certainly have the technology to construct very long underground tunnels.

The Boring Company has proven this. They have created tunnels that allow autonomous electric pods to travel underground at extremely impressive speeds.

But I would love to see visual evidence that the tunnels that Catherine Austin Fitts is talking about actually exist.

Interestingly, at one point during his interview with Fitts, Tucker Carlson actually admitted that he knew a contractor that worked on an underground project near the White House…

Tucker said he knew a contractor who worked on one of these bases and that person shared some interesting information with him.

“I knew a contractor who worked on one in the city of Washington D.C., and I remember him telling me about a power box, like a transformer box on Constitution Avenue…He told me that was actually the exit, the egress from the White House,” Tucker recalled.

“And I thought, ‘that’s kind of crazy in the middle of this big city where I live … that you could build something like that without me knowing it,’” he added.

Hopefully we will get some more answers about these secret underground facilities in the days ahead, because the American people deserve the truth.

Personally, I would love to see conclusive proof that establishes whether the claims that people are making are true or not.

But one thing that we do know for certain is that Mount Weather is getting an upgrade, and that seems rather odd at a time when other government programs that have been deemed not necessary are being cut back.

Do they know of an extinction-level event that is coming?

If so, why aren’t they telling the general public?

In the latest indicator of President Trump’s determination to close America’s biggest-ever land acquisition by whatever means necessary, US intelligence agencies have been directed to step up their efforts to gather information about Greenland, Denmark and their internal political dynamics, according to two people “familiar with the effort” who leaked the news to The Wall Street Journal.

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard lashed out at the leaks: “The Wall Street Journal should be ashamed of aiding deep state actors who seek to undermine the President by politicizing and leaking classified information. They are breaking the law and undermining our nation’s security and democracy.” Opting against similar fire-breathing, National Security Council spokesman James Hewitt was restrained: “The president has been very clear that the U.S. is concerned about the security of Greenland and the Arctic,” he told the Journal.

80% of Greenland is covered by a vast ice sheet up to 2 miles thick — with many mineral treasures beneath (via CarbonBrief)

According to the Journal’s sources, the directive came last week by way of a “collection emphasis message,” sent by several senior intelligence officials to subordinate agency leaders. As its name implies, this type of message shapes the priorities with which assets are assigned to various intelligence missions. The agencies are now tasked with:

Gathering information about Greenland’s independence movement

Assessing Greenlanders’ sentiments about the US extraction of its wealth of resources

Identifying backers of a US takeover of the island — in both Greenland and Denmark

It’s not clear which of the intel community’s many tools — which include spy satellites, drones, communications surveillance and covert operatives — will be used to harvest information about political movements and individuals in Greenland and Denmark.

Attempting to cast the directive as unusual, a former intelligence official told the Journal that “intelligence collection resources are inherently limited” and are typically directed against “perceived threats, not allied countries.” However true that is, Trump’s rhetoric about his desire for Greenland has certainly broken the mold. Most recently, in his weekend interview with NBC’s Kristen Welker, Trump wouldn’t eliminate the possibility of an American military conquest of the territory:

“I don’t rule it out. I don’t say I’m going to do it, but I don’t rule out anything. No, not there. We need Greenland very badly. Greenland is a very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them, and all of that. But we need that for international security.”

The island holds an enormous wealth of natural resources, most notably one of the largest rare earth deposits outside of China. It also sits alongside emerging shipping lanes and established transatlantic air and sea routes. Greenland is already home to the US military’s northernmost air base: Pituffik Air Base. Situated 750 miles above the Arctic Circle, the base has ballistic missile early-warning assets and is also used by Space Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command.

<picture></picture>

In March, Vice President JD Vance and then-national security advisor Mike Waltz visited the US base. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen objected, saying it put “completely unacceptable pressure on Greenland, Greenlandic politicians and the Greenlandic population.” Speaking at the base, Vance issued his own strong statement:

“Our message to Denmark is very simple: You have not done a good job by the people of Greenland…Denmark has not kept pace and devoted the resources necessary to keep this base, to keep our troops, and in my view, to keep the people of Greenland safe from a lot of very aggressive incursions from Russia, from China, and other nations.”

If Trump pulls it off, it would surpass the Louisiana Purchase as the largest-ever expansion of American territory. A largely self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark, Greenland is truly massive. At 836,000 square miles, it’s triple the size of Texas. Its population is extreme in another way — at just 56,000, it’s roughly equal to that of Carson City, Nevada, and a little over a quarter of the population of Worcester, Mass. Eighty percent of Greenland is covered by an ice sheet that’s up to two miles thick — which makes extraction of the rare earth and other subterranean wealth a technically challenging proposition.

Pakistan has warned that it will retaliate against India for the recent cross-border attacks. Tensions are rising between the two as another war seems to be brewing under the surface.

The escalation follows a terrorist attack in India’s Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory that left 26 civilians dead last month. The Indian government has accused Islamabad of harboring an armed group linked to the incident and characterized the pre-dawn missile and drone strike on Wednesday as retaliation, according to a report by RT.

India’s attack has killed 26 people, including some children, and injured 46 others, according to a report by The Guardian. Pakistan has declared these strikes as an “act of war.”

Pakistan’s National Security Committee, chaired by Sharif, said the Indian strikes were carried out “on the false pretext of the presence of imaginary terrorist camps” and deliberately targeted civilian infrastructure, including mosques. “These unprovoked and unjustified attacks martyred innocent men, women and children,” a statement said

New Delhi described its Operation Sindoor as “focused, measured and non-escalatory,” targeting locations associated with the terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The April attack was claimed by a group called The Resistance Front, reportedly an offshoot of LeT, which India identified as the mastermind behind the incident.

”Pakistan reserves the right to respond, in self-defense, at a time, place, and manner of its choosing,” the statement warned, urging the international community to hold New Delhi accountable for alleged violations of international law.

Russia has condemned the initial attack in Kashmir, with the Foreign Ministry stating that Moscow “objects to any terrorist activities and emphasizes the need for the international community to unite to effectively fight against this evil.” The country has urged both New Delhi and Islamabad to exercise restraint and pursue diplomatic solutions to their differences.
