28.

Google has developed an artificial intelligence system that can play video games like a human and take orders from players and could eventually even have real-world implications down the line.

"This work isn't about achieving high game scores," the SIMA research team wrote in a Google DeepMind post earlier this month. "Learning to play even one video game is a technical feat for an AI system, but learning to follow instructions in a variety of game settings could unlock more helpful AI agents for any environment."

SIMA, which stands for Scalable Instructable Multiworld Agent, isn’t like a typical computer player that’s built into a specific game. Rather, the AI agent plays alongside and learns like a human — through image recognition and from native language commands — and plays with keyboard and mouse outputs.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

"SIMA needs only the images provided by the 3D environment and natural-language instructions given by the user," according to the DeepMind post.

For now, the AI agent is only a research project. It’s meant to serve as a companion for human players that can carry out tasks.

"SIMA isn’t trained to win a game; it’s trained to run it and do what it’s told," the Google researchers wrote.

Google worked with eight game developers, including Hello Games and Embracer, to help train and test SIMA. As part of their goal to have the program task oriented, the researchers primarily trained SIMA on open-play environments, like No Man’s Sky and Goat Simulator 3, a bizarre game in which players control a goat that causes chaos.

NOW THAT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CAN CLONE VOICES, VIDEO GAME ACTORS MUST WEIGH THEIR OPTIONS

"This research marks the first time an agent has demonstrated it can understand a broad range of gaming worlds, and follow natural-language instructions to carry out tasks within them, as a human might," the Google team wrote.

So far, SIMA has learned about 600 basic skills, like turning left and climbing a ladder. The Google researchers eventually want the AI agent to be able to adapt to games it’s never played and without specific training.

But, ultimately, Google hopes the SIMA research will build toward "more general AI systems and agents that can understand and safely carry out a wide range of tasks in a way that is helpful to people online and in the real world," the researchers wrote in the blog post.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

"Our research shows how we can translate the capabilities of advanced AI models into useful, real-world actions through a language interface," the researchers added.

But it’s still a long way off before SIMA is ready for even basic video game play, having, for example, only succeeded in one-third of its tasks in No Man’s Sky.

"We hope that SIMA and other agent research can use video games as sandboxes to better understand how AI systems may become more helpful," the SIMA researchers wrote.

 71.

Four of the largest school boards in the Canadian province of Ontario said Thursday they launched lawsuits against TikTok, Meta and SnapChat alleging the social media platforms are disrupting student learning.

The lawsuits claim platforms like Facebook and Instagram are "designed for compulsive use, have rewired the way children think, behave, and learn" and teachers have been left to manage the fallout.

Meta Platforms Inc. owns Facebook and Instagram, while Snap Inc. owns SnapChat and ByteDance Ltd. owns TikTok.

Rachel Chernos, a trustee for the Toronto District School Board, said teachers and parents are noticing social withdrawal, anxiety, attention problems, cyber bullying and mental health issues.

SOCIAL MEDIA GIANTS LIKE TIKTOK, YOUTUBE FUEL 'YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS,' SCHOOL BOARDS CLAIM IN LAWSUIT

"These companies have knowingly created programs that are addictive that are aimed and marketed at young people and it is causing significant harm and we just can’t stand by any longer and not speak up about it," she said.

Dozens of U.S. states, including California and New York, are also suing Meta Platforms Inc. for harming young people and contributing to a youth mental health crisis by knowingly and deliberately designing features on Instagram and Facebook that addict children to its platforms.

The school boards in Canada suing are the Toronto District School Board, the Peel District School Board, the Toronto Catholic District School Board and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.

They are seeking damages in excess of $4 billion Canadian (US$2.9 billion) for disruption to student learning and the education system.

A spokeswoman for Snap Inc., Tonya Johnson, said Snapchat helps its users stay connected with their friends.

"Snapchat opens directly to a camera — rather than a feed of content — and has no traditional public likes or comments," she said. "While we will always have more work to do, we feel good about the role Snapchat plays in helping close friends feel connected, happy and prepared as they face the many challenges of adolescence."

Representatives of Meta and ByteDance didn’t immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Duncan Embury, a lawyer for the firm representing the boards, said in the statement the most advanced tech developers in the world have knowingly and negligently designed their products to maximize the amount of time young people spend on their platforms at the expense of their wellbeing and education.

"Social media companies should be held accountable for their negligence and the harm they have caused to our schools, and our community at large," he said.

MOST AMERICANS SUPPORT HOUSE PLAN TO BAN TIKTOK IF IT ISN'T SOLD, POLL FINDS

The use of social media among teens is nearly universal in the U.S. and many other parts of the world. Almost all teens ages 13 to 17 in the U.S. report using a social media platform, with about a third saying they use social media "almost constantly," according to the Pew Research Center.

In May, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy called on tech companies, parents and caregivers to take "immediate action to protect kids now" from the harms of social media.

This week, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bil l that will ban social media accounts for children under 14 and require parental permission for 14- and 15-year-olds. It takes effect Jan. 1 and is expected to face legal challenges.

No money will be paid to the attorneys handling the Canadian lawsuits unless they win.

 155.

Have you ever wondered whether or not the government is watching what you do online? It's not an unreasonable question to ask.

After all, whistleblowers like Julian Assange and Edward Snowden revealed that the government might be taking a closer look at us than we'd like to think about it.

However, we may not know to what extent the government has the capability to monitor us to some degree. The reasons why, who they're looking at and what they're looking at are another question.

Let's break down whether or not the government is watching you and what to do about protecting your privacy online.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S FREE CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH SECURITY ALERTS, QUICK VIDEO TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

Maybe, maybe not. While the U.S. government theoretically can watch most people's activities online, they're likely only paying attention to certain individuals. This comes after the U.S. Patriot Act, which was passed post-9/11. The act significantly expanded the powers of U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies to take a closer look into individuals suspected of terrorist activities or anything that would be considered a concern for national security.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

Generally, the consensus is that if you're not doing anything suspicious online, then there'd be no reason for the NSA — the National Security Agency — to eavesdrop or snoop on your online activities. But, what if they could watch you even if you're not doing anything sketchy? Wouldn't you still want some sense of privacy?

No matter what, it's important to be careful of what you post and do online, as nothing is ever 100% private. However, we don't blame you for not wanting the government to know intimate details you may share with friends and family online via posts or messaging apps.

MORE: HOW TWO OF THE BIGGEST TECH COMPANIES ARE SECRETLY HELPING GOVERNMENTS SPY ON YOUR SMARTPHONE

There are several ways that the government can see what you're doing online. Some of these would perhaps take court orders or warrants, depending on the circumstances. But, other methods may be ways in which you're essentially giving away your information without you even realizing it!

Wiretaps and listening devices: Authorized by court orders, these can be used to intercept phone calls and text messages.

CCTV and facial recognition technology: AI tools used by governments can take the pictures you’ve shared on social media and enter them into a facial recognition database. Once they have that, they can pair it with CCTV cameras that can pinpoint your location and monitor your comings and goings.

Metadata analysis: Even if the content of communications is not intercepted, agencies can collect metadata — data about data — such as the time and duration of phone calls, email addresses of senders and recipients, and the locations of the communicating parties.

Data collection programs: These programs can collect vast amounts of data from internet service providers and tech companies, including emails, chat messages, web searches, and more, especially when you sign into accounts that identify and track you.

Backdoor access to devices and software: Governments can pressure or collaborate with technology companies to gain backdoor access to devices and software, allowing them to bypass encryption and directly access data and communications.

Social media monitoring: Government agencies monitor social media platforms to gather intelligence.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR ONLINE PRIVACY AND SECURITY ON YOUR NEXT CRUISE VACATION

MORE: NEWLY IPHONE SPYWARE TOOL SOLD TO GOVERNMENTS FOR TARGETED SURVEILLANCE

There are many ways to keep yourself safer online, but it all depends on who you're trying to keep yourself safe from. Governments and hackers obviously have much different intentions when it comes to spying on your online activity, and therefore, the measures you'd take to protect your privacy may vary. However, none of these methods are foolproof or guaranteed to work against government surveillance, and some of them may have drawbacks or limitations.

1. Know your rights, but respect the law: The first step in maintaining some level of privacy is to know what your rights are, as well as what you can and cannot do online. Again, as long as you are not doing anything illegal or harmful to anyone online (surely, we don't need to list these out), there should be no reason to worry about the government watching you. That being said, it doesn't hurt to stay up to date with recent trends in privacy and security, government laws, and knowing where your rights protect you.

2. Secure your browser: Next, you can adjust your browser's privacy settings to minimize data sharing. Consider using a privacy-focused browser.

While some people might also choose to surf the web in private or incognito mode, it’s important to note that this does not shield you from external monitoring, including potential government surveillance.

3. Use encrypted messaging apps: If you want your messages and calls to be private, consider ditching certain mainstream messaging apps and sticking to encrypted ones. There are some apps that offer end-to-end encryption such as Signal, WhatsApp or Telegram.

4. Turn off your microphone and camera (and permissions): While it's debatable whether the government can see or listen to you, it doesn't hurt to turn off your mic and webcam when you're not using them. You may also want to double-check whether you're permitting apps to access them without you realizing it.

5. Be careful what you post on social media: Not only should you regularly review and adjust your privacy settings on social media platforms, but you should also be careful about what you post on your page. If you don't want a stranger or a boss knowing about it, then don't post anything you wouldn't want the government to necessarily see, either.

6. Use a VPN: Consider using a VPN to protect against hackers snooping on your device as well. VPNs will largely protect you from those who want to track and identify your potential location and the websites that you visit. See my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

MORE: BIG BROTHER'S NEW PLAN TO SPY ON AND CHARGER NYC DRIVERS

We may never know for sure how much our government can watch or listen to what we do online. Even if you're not up to anything suspicious, it's perfectly normal not to want your government snooping on you. By using some of the strategies we mentioned — including a VPN — you can keep your online activity more private.

Do you have concerns about the government watching your online activity? 198.

Artificial intelligence benchmarking group MLCommons on Wednesday released a fresh set of tests and results that rate the speed at which top-of-the-line hardware can run AI applications and respond to users.

The two new benchmarks added by MLCommons measure the speed at which the AI chips and systems can generate responses from the powerful AI models packed with data. The results roughly demonstrate to how quickly an AI application such as ChatGPT can deliver a response to a user query.

One of the new benchmarks added the capability to measure the speediness of a question-and-answer scenario for large language models. Called Llama 2, it includes 70 billion parameters and was developed by Meta Platforms.

WHITE HOUSE UNVEILS NEW AI REGULATIONS FOR FEDERAL AGENCIES

MLCommons officials also added a second text-to-image generator to the suite of benchmarking tools, called MLPerf, based on Stability AI's Stable Diffusion XL model.

Servers powered by Nvidia's H100 chips built by the likes of Alphabet's Google, Supermicro and Nvidia itself handily won both new benchmarks on raw performance. Several server builders submitted designs based on the company's less powerful L40S chip.

Server builder Krai submitted a design for the image generation benchmark with a Qualcomm AI chip that draws significant less power than Nvidia's cutting edge processors.

Intel also submitted a design based on its Gaudi2 accelerator chips. The company described the results as "solid."

Raw performance is not the only measure that is critical when deploying AI applications. Advanced AI chips suck up enormous amounts of energy and one of the most significant challenges for AI companies is deploying chip that deliver an optimal amount of performance for a minimal amount of energy.

MLCommons has a separate benchmark category for measuring power consumption.

 288.

A quarter-mile white steel tube running alongside a railway line in the windswept northern Netherlands could usher in a new era in the transportation of people and freight.

The tube is the heart of the new European Hyperloop Center that opens Tuesday and will be a proving ground in coming years for developers of the evolving technology.

Hyperloop, once trumpeted by Elon Musk, involves capsules floating on magnetic fields zipping at speeds of around 435 mph through low-pressure tubes. Its advocates tout it as far more efficient than short-haul flights, high-speed rail and freight trucks.

CHINA SETS WORLD RECORD FOR FASTEST HYPERLOOP TRAIN

But since Musk unveiled the concept that he said could shuttle passengers the nearly 400 miles between Los Angeles and San Francisco in 30 minutes, it has progressed at a much slower pace from the drawing board toward the real world.

"I expect by 2030 you will have the first hyperloop route, maybe three miles in which people will actually be transporting passengers," said the center's director, Sascha Lamme. "Actually there’s already preparations being done for such routes in for example Italy or India."

Not everybody is as optimistic about Hyperloop's future.

"This is just another example of policymakers chasing a shiny object when basic investment in infrastructure is needed," Robert Noland, distinguished professor at the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, said in comments emailed to The Associated Press.

"It costs too much to build," he added.

Lamme said skeptics should come and take a look for themselves.

"We built the European Hyperloop Center and from what we have built, we know that we can be competitive with high-speed rail," he said. "And then we have not even included all the cost optimizations that we can do in the coming decade to reduce that even further."

The test center's tube is made up of 34 separate sections mostly 2½ meters (more than eight feet) in diameter. A vacuum pump in a steel container next to the tube sucks out the air to reduce the internal pressure. That reduces drag and allows capsules to travel at such high speeds.

A test capsule built by Dutch hyperloop pioneer Hardt Hyperloop will take part next month in the first tests at the center that is funded by private investment as well as contributions from the provincial government, the Dutch national government and European Commission.

A unique feature of the Veendam tube is that it has a switch — where it splits into two separate tubes, a piece of infrastructure that will be critical to real-life applications.

"Lane switching is very important for hyperloop, because it allows vehicles to travel from any origin to any destination," said Marinus van der Meijs, Hardt's technology and engineering director. "So it really creates a network effect where you sort of have a highway of tubes and vehicles can take an on and offramp or they can take a lane switch to go to a different part of Europe or to a different destination."

While testing continues in Veendam, hyperloop developers hope that destinations for their technology are forthcoming.

"Really the main challenge is finding government commitments to build routes and, on the other hand, finding new funding to realize the necessary test facility and technology demonstration that you need to do to make this happen," Lamme said.

 366.

While it may be incredibly tempting to have a "go with the flow" mindset like the rest of your vacation, your technology definitely should not be compromised while traveling. Much like we would advise against using public hot spots, hopping onto a public Wi-Fi on-board or at your destination is not always worth the risk.

Not all cruise lines are the same when it comes to Wi-Fi security at sea. Check with your ship’s internet security before connecting to understand what level of safety is being provided when you are using their internet access.

MISTAKES TO AVOID IF YOU JUST HAVE TO USE PUBLIC WI-FI

Between long periods at sea, between ports and disembarking in a variety of destinations, it is incredibly easy for hackers to grab your personal information from or embed malicious viruses on a vulnerable device. And it is much harder for you to combat the consequences while out at sea.

While VPNs are a popular choice for secure browsing on cruise ships, their reliability can vary. Some larger cruise lines, like Carnival, don't allow VPN use on their networks. Others, like Royal Caribbean, might not have an official stance, but connectivity can still be spotty due to satellite internet. Here's what savvy vacationers can do:

IS YOUR ROKU SAFE? MASSIVE DATA BREACH EXPOSES THOUSANDS OF ACCOUNTS

Let's dive into some ways to keep your devices safe and secure while you're sailing the high seas! Here are eight tips:

While you cannot control the vulnerability of the networks secured or unsecured on a cruise, you can certainly control what types of viruses and malware get on your devices. The best bet is to make sure your antivirus software is completely up to date on your devices via your secure, private network before heading out for your vacation.

A good antivirus software will protect you from clicking malicious links that install malware that may get access to your private information. It can also alert you of any phishing emails or ransomware scams. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

Make sure the operating software is completely up to date on your devices via your secure, private network before heading out for your vacation. Operating system updates usually contain patches for known vulnerabilities and cyberattacks

While at home or the office, you might keep Bluetooth and Wi-Fi constantly on for convenience. However, on a cruise ship with public Wi-Fi and in unfamiliar ports, it's important to tighten your digital security. Here's why. First, public Wi-Fi networks, especially free ones, can be unsecured. Disabling Wi-Fi minimizes the chance your device automatically connects to a risky network. Second, Bluetooth can be exploited by nearby devices to steal information. Turning it off when not needed adds an extra layer of security.

Remember: Only enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi when you need to actively use the internet or connect a specific device. This helps protect your data and keeps your online activity more secure while enjoying your cruise.

HOW TO STAY CONNECTED ON YOUR PHONE WHILE TRAVELING ABROAD

While it might seem like a chore to wait between ports to hop on to the internet, it might be the safer and cheaper bet. While cellular carriers charge hefty fees for roaming, their cruise packages aren’t exactly cheap.

For instance, AT&T offers a basic cruise package that starts at $60 for 100 minutes of talk, text and data. But if you can wait until you get to port, AT&T customers with unlimited plans can use their AT&T International Day Pass® for $10/day, and data will be drawn from your domestic data allowance. Check with your cellular provider to see if they have a data plan that works with your plan and itinerary. Check out the best SIM and eSIM cards for travelers by clicking here.

HIDDEN FEATURES IN YOUR AMAZON ECHO THAT IMPROVES YOUR WI-FI SIGNAL

If you must stay connected onboard, avoid sensitive sites such as your financial institutions or important email accounts. If possible, access all your funds and travel information before you leave for your trip so you can get updates on a safe connection when you disembark (at ports).

While charging your phone may seem like the least risky part of your cruise, it might actually be the riskiest. Yes, hackers and scammers have made even utilizing free charging stations a minefield for your security. Like free Wi-Fi hot spots, hackers have access to free USB charging stations onboard or at ports.

While it is tempting to power up your phone's battery for the perfect photo op, someone might be siphoning data from your phone while you charge. You should always bring your own charging cable and charging block to connect directly to a wall outlet. If you want to be able to charge as you go, you can bring a power bank you can charge to take with you anywhere on the ship or at the port.

If you want to carry fewer items but need to charge your phone at the free charging stations, you can bring USB data blockers, which will prevent data from being gleaned from your phone while you charge.

Packages for social media access start at around $15/day, so it isn’t cheap. While ponying up for a slower-than-home internet Wi-Fi package seems less than ideal, so are astronomical data roaming charges or identity theft from using an insecure connection. A closed network that requires a login and password, and sometimes two-factor authentication, such as an onboard internet package, is going to keep you safer.

Even if it slows down your connection onboard, if your cruise ship allows it, a VPN is still highly recommended. Additionally, with the exception of certain countries where a VPN is illegal, it is still worth being able to use the VPN alongside any connection points you use when you get to the port.

A VPN will protect against being tracked and identify your potential location on websites that you visit. Many sites can read your IP address and, depending on their privacy settings, may display the city from which you are corresponding. A VPN will disguise your IP address to show an alternate location, and this can be useful for bypassing geo-restrictions on streaming content.

For example, if you are traveling to a country that blocks a streaming service you normally use, you can use a VPN to set your destination to a country where the service is available. This will allow you to access the streaming content as if you were in that country. See my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

While we are accustomed to being connected 24/7 to our devices, hopping on board a cruise may be the ultimate invitation to disconnect. Keeping your devices safe on board a cruise can be pricey, but the costs of not staying secure are even higher. If you can’t limit your time online onboard, make sure you’re willing to take steps before and during your cruise to keep yourself and your devices safe.

If you’re required to be in contact with your employer, it might be helpful to discuss your cruise ship’s limitations, especially if there is an IT support person available at work.

Do you feel like the cruise ship companies should step up their security, given the potential security risks of their Wi-Fi? Apple Journal will remember that and send you a prompt to write an entry about it.

According to Apple, this feature doesn’t share this information with the outside world, but plenty of people still thought, "Hmm, maybe not." I don’t need Tim Cook knowing about my 5th grade crush, thank you very much.

Two settings raised hairs

Journaling Suggestions and Discoverable by Others are causing a commotion. Social media posts spread like wildfire, claiming that these settings give strangers access to your personal information and entries.

First, let’s tackle Journaling Suggestions. I researched it, and Journaling Suggestions are only created based on which apps you use. Plus, you get to control which data gets included.

7 MAC AND WINDOWS TRICKS ONLY THE PROS KNOW

OK, but can Apple see your entries?

🔍 Myth busted: Nope, your entries are end-to-end encrypted. That means not even Apple can access them.

The Discoverable By Others setting detects nearby iPhone users who also have the Journal app and are "discoverable." So, does it share your info with passersby?

🔍 I debunked this one, too: This setting doesn’t share your name or location with strangers. It just lets you know how many of your contacts are around to create more personalized prompts.

You can easily disable it in your settings:

FCC INVESTIGATES SECURITY RISK OF US MOBILE DEVICES USING RUSSIAN, CHINESE SATELLITE SYSTEMS

One privacy concern you should be scared of?

Everyone can see your smartphone’s name. Yep, anyone who tries to connect to Wi-Fi will see it in their list of discovered networks as a potential hotspot. That means if you use your real name as your phone’s name, anyone with a smartphone or laptop can see it.

Hackers could use that information to zero in on who (and where) you are. Now, that’s creepy. The good news is you can easily change the name of your phone to something else:

Keep your tech-know going

My national radio show airs all across the USA. 507.

Do you ever feel like your Facebook is listening to you, or watching your every move? That whenever you search for something on another website or have a conversation with a friend, the next minute you're seeing ads on Facebook for that same thing?

This is no coincidence. Although Facebook has denied that our phones listen to us, they do have other ways of finding out what we are talking about, listening to and searching for. In some cases, it seems like they know what we're thinking, too.

If you're feeling a bit creeped out by all this, we don't blame you. The good news is that while Facebook does have many capabilities, it isn't omnipresent.

The good news is that there are ways to escape Facebook's creepy ad tracking, so you can scroll in peace.

SCAMMERS ARE USING FAKE NEWS, MALICIOUS LINKS TO TARGET YOU IN AN EMOTIONAL FACEBOOK PHISHING TRAP

If you're wondering whether Facebook can track what you search for on Google, the answer is no. (Though it sure does feel like it, right?)

Though Facebook isn't able to track what you're searching for in Google, Facebook does use tracking cookies that are stored on your computer or mobile device to "get to know you" better. These cookies are logged information about your online activity, which they can get while the Facebook app is on your phone, and you're running other apps in the background. They're also able to collect your data from third parties to understand your behavior based on which sites or apps you visit, or what you like on Facebook.

The data Facebook gathers may include:

Even without access to what you search on Google, they still know a lot about you and they can share that information with companies that want to target you via ads.

I'M A TECH EXPERT AND YOU NEED TO MAKE THESE TECH CHANGES NOW BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE

Based on all this information that Facebook can collect, companies can use ad tracking to target you with ads highly relevant to your browsing activity, interests, conversations on Facebook Messenger, and potentially even interactions on WhatsApp (which is also owned by Meta, Facebook's parent company).

Facebook ad tracking enables advertisers to monitor how users interact with their ads on the platform, providing insights into clicks, impressions and conversions. Without this information, companies are not able to target people with their ads as well as they do.

As we mentioned, Facebook has several ways of sharing your data with others, but these days, it's very easy to do via Facebook Pixel. Facebook Pixel is a small line of code placed on a website that collects valuable data about user behavior. This helps advertisers understand the effectiveness of their ads, optimize future campaigns and retarget visitors based on their site behavior.

Let's illustrate how this works, using the example of what a reader had asked us about searching for a dentist and then seeing relevant ads on their Facebook:

If someone is searching for a dentist and then sees an ad for a dentist on their Facebook, it might seem like Facebook is directly tracking their searches in a web browser. While Facebook itself doesn't monitor browser searches outside its platform, here's how it can happen:

Facebook Pixel: If you visit a dentist's website that has the Facebook Pixel installed, this action can be tracked and relayed back to Facebook, which then might show you ads related to dentistry.

Partner Data: Facebook partners with data brokers and other online platforms to exchange information about users' online behaviors. Even if Facebook isn't directly tracking your searches, these partnerships might help Facebook obtain information about your interests, including looking for a dentist.

Activity on Facebook: Your behavior on Facebook itself, such as liking pages related to a dentist's office or sending a message to a friend to ask about dentists, can signal to Facebook's algorithms that you might be interested in seeing dental ads.

Device and Location Data: If you've allowed Facebook access to your location, it might use this information to show ads from local businesses, including dentists in your area, based on the assumption that local services are relevant to you.

Even though Facebook itself likely doesn't receive your search history directly from most search engines, there are ways your browsing activity could still influence the ads you see on Facebook based on privacy policies and agreements.

5 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR FACEBOOK ACCOUNT BULLETPROOF

If you're tired of Facebook targeting you with ads, there are ways to put a stop to it.

Facebook provides a tool called "Off-Facebook Activity" that allows you to manage tracking and prevent it from being used for targeted ads. While it doesn’t stop all tracking methods, it does help reduce the visibility of advertisements related to services and products you’ve recently viewed.

To disable this feature:

From here, you have several options to control or disconnect the information businesses send to Meta:

By using this tool, you can take more control over your online privacy and limit the impact of targeted ads based on your browsing history.

You can control your ad preferences in Facebook’s settings to control the types of ads you see.

Please note that changing your ad preferences influences which ads you see, but it won’t change the total number of ads you see. Also, keep in mind that there is no way to hide all ads.

Ad blockers are essential tools that prevent intrusive advertisements while you browse the internet. When you visit a website, the ad blocker scans for any content that’s on its blacklist and promptly identifies it as advertising material.

Blocking ads on Facebook is particularly beneficial for safeguarding against malware. Numerous ads contain viruses that could potentially infect your device. Some antivirus software comes with Ad blockers that effectively remove Facebook ads. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

4. Use a VPN to protect your browsing privacy

Even if Facebook doesn't know what you're searching for on Google, they are getting enough information elsewhere to be able to target you with specific ads. That being said, it's certainly not a bad idea to take extra steps to protect your browsing privacy where you can.

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, which establishes a digital connection between your computer and a remote server owned by a VPN provider. This creates a point-to-point tunnel that encrypts your data, masks your IP address, and allows you to sidestep website blocks and firewalls on the internet. See my expert review of the best VPNs for browsing the web privately on your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

If you're a Facebook user but you're getting tired of seeing targeted ads all the time, try implementing the suggestions in this article to see if that helps minimize the number you are seeing. But keep in mind you can never have 100% privacy when online or using these platforms, which is a consideration that has led many people to close their accounts or limit their activity.

Have you tried limiting the amount of targeted ads you get on Facebook? 587.

For two years, Diageo analyzed various Scotch whiskies using machine algorithms.

Diageo, an alcohol beverage company, invested $230 million into a portfolio of whisky tourism projects. A portion of this lump sum was dedicated to the exploration of whisky maturation using technology called SmokeDNAi.

Using SmokeDNAi, teams tested and analyzed the flavor profiles and mouthfeel of non-identical twin whiskies distilled in different casks – one remnant and one original. The pair of rare whiskies is named Port Ellen Gemini, and each bottle costs $50,000.

The purpose of the analysis is to better understand whisky aging in a barrel.

The announcement of SmokeDNAi comes on the heels of Port Ellen’s reopening in Scotland. After 40 years, the "ghost" distillery welcomed tourists back with modern advancements to both construction and whisky-making.

‘GHOST’ WHISKY DISTILLERY IN SCOTLAND REOPENS AFTER 40 YEARS

"What we want to do is have this wonderful slow maturation in a barrel where we’re controlling the flavor," Ewan Morgan, national luxury ambassador and head of whisky outreach at Diageo North America, told Fox News Digital. "We have a much better understanding of why they taste the way they taste, or why they smell the way they smell, or the mouth-feel."

Between two whisky casks from Port Ellen, a distillery in Islay, the vanilla characteristic, vanillin, varied. One cask contained around 3%, while the other included more than double, around 6%. The remnant cask contained liquors from the 1960s and 1980s, according to Morgan.

"We can get a much better understanding of what the final product is going to be like," Morgan said.

Port Ellen can leverage data sets in order to maximize production, flavor and sales of whisky and new blends in the future.

Using samples of whisky, the liquid is put through a chemical analysis process, gas chromatography or liquid chromatography, and data sets of distinct components are broken down by an algorithm.

WHISKEY VS WHISKY: THIS IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE BROWN LIQUORS

"It basically takes a signature of that liquid, and then it gives us a reading or a spike reading of the different compounds that are in there," Morgan said. "And unless you're an organic chemist, or you're really into that kind of stuff, it doesn't make that much sense. So, what we wanted to do was demystify that and make it easy."

Diageo also sought to offer consumers taste and flavor through sight.

Out of the Ether, "an algorithmic machine generated work of art that harnesses SmokeDNAi technology," according to Diageo, produces imagery of whisky smoke over time.

Design experts, in collaboration with Bose Collins, worked to produce visuals that are more easily digested by a consumer versus data sets.

"We have an overlay there that will have the chemical name like vanillin, for example, which smells and tastes like vanilla," Morgan said.

Here, whisky enthusiasts can gaze at flavor combinations, aromas and unambiguous profiles that wouldn’t be visible to the naked eye.

"On the visual, you will see the small amounts of one particle that moves around," Morgan said. "Then, there's a larger cloud in there and then that will show you the percentile of these compounds that sit in there."

Visual profiles may include a combination of coconut, smoky, earthy, medicinal, floral and sweet flavors.

"It gives you kind of a really great, at a glance, visualization of what's going on inside the barrel," Morgan said. "It just gives us a much, much clearer understanding of our own whisky."

 628.

Telly is an emerging smart TV firm that has made some waves in 2024. First, the company partnered with a range of streaming and media companies such as Spotify, Microsoft, Nielsen and others.

Second, they announced a program in which they would give out their 4K 55-inch TV for free. Yes, that's right, free. But nothing in this life is truly free, so how does Telly plan to make money on these TVs? The answer might shock you, but it's a pretty innovative, yet potentially unsettling way to get customers to pay for a TV. In short, you pay for the TV with your data.

NEXT TEXT-TO-VIDEO AI MODEL SORA WILL UNLEASH CREATIVE POTENTIAL BUT REQUIRES ‘EXTREME ACCOUNTABILITY’

The Telly smart TV comes with a big bar integrated into the TV that sits just below the screen, and it's used to show personalized ads that are impossible to bypass. The secondary screen doesn't just constantly run ads, but it also features a few useful widgets that can show the score of games, live stock information, and quick weather information. But, in addition to these widgets, the secondary display will also show several related ads that it deems relevant to you.

BEST TECH TO HELP LOVED ONE WITH MEMORY ISSUES

That's Telly's premise, at least. Telly isn't totally wrong when they say that every company, and in particular every Smart TV on the market, is selling your data. From Samsung to Sony, small bits of data are picked up by your Smart TV and then sold to advertisers.

The data we are talking about can be related to your internet service provider, your specific location, your email address, your viewing habits and preferences, and pretty much anything else you do on a smart TV, including plugging in sound systems or game consoles, can and will be used to harvest data.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR ONLINE PRIVACY, SECURITY WITH VPN WHILE USING HOTSPOT

IS YOUR ROKU SAFE? MASSIVE DATA BREACH EXPOSES THOUSANDS OF ACCOUNTS

Telly hasn't devised a way to solve the crisis of privacy in our digital age, but it has introduced a new trade-off: giving your privacy away for free in exchange for a 4K 55-inch TV. If you are OK with giving away your data for a TV, here's how the Telly program works.

First, you need to sign up with the company, which requires you to fill out a form with your legal name, shipping address, and a valid U.S. phone number. Next, you will have to download the Telly smartphone app, agree to their data collection policy, and complete a survey, which helps Telly create an advertising profile for you. Mind you, all of this data collection occurs before you even receive and power on the TV.

STREAM MORE, PAY LESS BY LOWERING YOUR MONTHLY STREAMING COSTS

This is where things get tricky. When Telly claims "all Smart TV's are already selling your data," they are absolutely correct. Every single smart TV available on the market is picking up your data, sometimes innocuous data related to what streaming apps you use and what shows you watch, but also personal data ranging from names, email addresses, and locations to phone numbers and biometric data on higher-end Smart TVs that include cameras.

Once Telly collects that data, they use it to create an advertising profile for you, and more importantly, they sell that data to a wide range of advertising companies that use it to churn out more advertising.

This is nothing new in the world of Big Tech. We give away our private information every day, whether it's our location info from our iPhone or Android smartphone or our biometric health data from our smartwatches. Every day, we knowingly, or at least according to big tech companies, hit "agree & continue" without reading the full Terms of Service and pass our data forward in a chain of tech companies and advertising firms.

TOP 10 TECH OF CES 2024

Early reviews do indicate that TV is actually a decent TV, and the company claims it's "the smartest TV ever built." It features a 4K resolution with HDR and HDR10+ support, but it also only has a 60Hz refresh rate. I also prefer a higher refresh rate for watching sports, but movies and TV shows will look fine with a 60Hz refresh rate.

Telly also managed to fit a room-blasting Harman Kardon sound bar in the space between the TV screen and the secondary display, which would retail for more than $400 if purchased separately. Again, it's all included for free.

There's also an integrated camera with a privacy shutter that can be used for Zoom calls, but not much else. Telly claims it doesn't record anything, and it's good that they offered the privacy shutter, but I personally don't like cameras on my TV.

It comes preloaded with a few apps, notably Zoom and Spotify, but all of your streaming apps will come from an included Android dongle that you plug into an HDMI port.

The TV does come with the usual range of ports, including an HDMI 2.1 with eARC, which is great for PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X gamers.

While there is a process that you have to sign up for to receive a TV from Telly, it feels like we are getting uncomfortably close to the line between mutual agreement and outright surveillance. The Telly doesn't look like a bad TV, but you can get a pretty good smart TV these days for around $500.

Ultimately, it's down to how you view data and personal privacy in our modern digital world to decide if a Telly is worth it or not, but personally, there are too many outright privacy implications here for me to get one myself. In particular, it's concerning how people might get roped into a deal for a "free TV" without fully understanding what they are signing up for.

How do you feel about the Telly? Are you willing to give your data away in exchange for a TV? Let us know in the comments below. 671.

You know how we’re always getting those calendar invites on our iPhones? They’re like little digital reminders for all the important stuff – meetings, birthdays, you name it. But hold on, not all of these invites are the real deal. Some of them are just spam in disguise, trying to sneak into our schedules.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S FREE CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH SECURITY ALERTS, QUICK VIDEO TIPS, TECH REVIEWS, AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

Let’s dive into the essential dos and don’ts to keep those pesky spam invites from hijacking your iPhone calendar.

1) Delete the spam calendar invite

The moment a spam invite hits your calendar, it’s like an uninvited guest at a party. So, what do you do? Show it the door. Hit "delete" and send that spam invite packing. It’s the digital equivalent of saying, "No, thanks, I’ll pass."

Spam calendar invites can be a real nuisance. They clutter your calendar with unwanted events and can even pose security risks if they contain malicious links. Whatever you do, if you don't recognize who it’s from, don’t click that link. It’s a trap. Clicking on links from unknown sources can lead to downloading malware or giving away personal information to cybercriminals.

HOW TO UPDATE YOUR PASSCODE ON IPHONE

Be sure always to have an antivirus running in the background in case you accidentally click a link in one of these calendar invites. This will prevent you from clicking through malicious links that install malware that may get access to your private information. Having antivirus protection installed on all your devices can also alert you of any phishing emails or ransomware scams. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

THE 4 BEST SECRET NOTE-TAKING APPS THAT CAN CHANGE EVERYTHING IN YOUR LIFE

Accidents happen, but there’s an easy fix:

THE IPHONE PRIVACY SETTING YOU NEED TO TURN OFF

Don’t let it linger in your inbox:

Use a dedicated email alias for calendar subscriptions and event RSVPs. This way, if you ever receive spam invitations, they’re isolated from your main calendar and can be easily managed. By strategically using email aliases, you can maintain a clean and spam-free iPhone calendar, ensuring that only legitimate invitations make their way to your schedule.

Email aliases also help prevent your personal information from being compromised in the event of a data breach. Find out more about upgrading the security of your email here.

1-MINUTE TECH CHANGES FOR MORE PRIVACY

Staying vigilant and proactive about your digital safety is key. By following these steps, you can keep your calendar – and your iPhone – free from spam and secure from threats. Remember, when in doubt, delete it. If you didn’t ask for it, don’t click it.

Do you have a spam horror story related to your iPhone calendar? Crooks are making considerable sums of money by exploiting children's identities, potentially derailing their financial future before it even begins.

MORE: POLICE URGE PARENTS TO TURN OFF APPLE IPHONE SETTING DANGEROUS TO KIDS

Scammers deploy a variety of tactics to acquire sensitive information about minors. They may comb through social media, sift through data leaks, peruse public databases, directly interact with minors on digital forums or purchase data from the dark web.

TOP IDENTITY THEFT SCAMS TO AVOID

Children's identities are particularly appealing to criminals due to their clean financial slate. Armed with just a handful of personal details, these fraudsters can take over a child’s social media presence, divert mail, secure retail credit cards or gain access to financial resources by altering passwords — all under the radar of unsuspecting parents.

This form of identity theft can go undetected for years, only coming to light when young adults face rejected loan applications or denied benefits, a rude awakening to a problem they never knew existed.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported over 22,000 cases of identity theft involving individuals 19 and under in the last year alone. Yet, according to the FTC, this figure barely scratches the surface. The clandestine nature of these crimes, compounded by the reluctance or inability of victims to report them, suggests a much larger issue at play.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

MORE: HOW STRESSED-OUT PARENTS ARE NOW NAVIGATING PARENTHOOD WITH CHATGPT

1. Freezing your child's credit is a critical first step, effectively locking out potential fraudsters. This can be done as soon as a child receives a Social Security number, with no downside to preemptively safeguarding their financial identity.

2. Ask questions before sharing personal information. Be cautious about sharing your child’s Social Security number. Always ask why it’s needed, how it will be protected and if there’s an alternative identifier that can be used.

3. Secure personal documents. Keep documents with your child’s personal information, such as medical records or Social Security cards, in a locked file cabinet. Shred these documents before disposal.

4. Use an identity theft protection service. Identity Theft companies can monitor personal information like your child's Social Security number, phone number and email address and alert you if it is being sold on the dark web or used to open an account. They can also assist you in freezing your child's bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals. See my tips and best picks on how to protect yourself from identity theft.

5. Install antivirus software. Ensure all devices used by your child have reputable antivirus software installed. This software can help protect your children from clicking malicious links that install malware that may get access to your private information. This can also alert you of any phishing emails or ransomware scams. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

It’s clear that the innocence of childhood is under threat in a way that was unimaginable just a generation ago. The digital age has brought with it a new breed of predators who, hidden behind screens, seek to exploit the most vulnerable among us — our children.

Their tactics are sophisticated, their reach is global and their impact can be devastating. But there is hope. By taking proactive steps, we can shield our children from these financial predators and secure their future.

How prepared are you to protect your child’s financial future from identity theft? Let us know by writing us at Cyberguy.com/Contact

For more of my tech tips and security alerts, subscribe to my free CyberGuy Report Newsletter by heading to Cyberguy.com/Newsletter

Ask Kurt a question or let us know what stories you'd like us to cover

Answers to the most asked CyberGuy questions:

Copyright 2024 CyberGuy.com. All rights reserved.

 800.

One of the most vulnerable moments in life is feeling like your bank account has been hacked. Then, realizing that it is actually compromised is definitely a heart-sinking moment. Unfortunately, hacking is a harsh reality of our digital age, so know you are not alone.

While it can cause you to feel a wave of negative emotions, there are steps you can take immediately following the discovery to regain control of your account or prevent it from spiraling further out of control.

Below are seven tell-tale signs that your bank account has been hacked, six next steps you can take if it happens to you, and 10 ways to prevent it from happening again or in the first place.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S FREE CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH SECURITY ALERTS, QUICK VIDEO TIPS, TECH REVIEWS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

While it is important to verify that your financial institution or someone you share your account with made no error, below are some of the common signs that your bank account has been hacked.

You swipe or tap your debit card to make a purchase when the cashier at the store notifies you that your card has been declined. After several more attempts with the same card, you realize that something is genuinely amiss. If your bank account has been hacked, hackers could have closed your card and requested a new one.

You try to log into your bank’s app on your phone or go home and try to log into your account, only to find out your password has changed without your knowledge. Hackers who gain access to your bank accounts tend to change passwords first, so they can run havoc on your account without your intervention.

Anticipating a larger-than-normal bill from the gas company, you log into your bank account to be greeted with a $0 balance. You refresh the page of your bank statement several times, thinking this is a technical error. Yet the balance remains $0 or, at worst, negative (overdrawn) — this means your bank account was likely hacked.

Your monthly statement usually arrives like clockwork, but it stops coming altogether. At first, you think this is a post office error, but all your other bills and documents arrive in a timely fashion. If your bank statements and other documentation stop arriving, it is likely that hackers could have changed the contact information on your account.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

Your balance has been pretty level, so you haven’t been checking your transactions, but you go to check if a particular payment has cleared, only to notice some strange withdrawals and transfers. They were in more benign increments of $20s here and there to bigger amounts toward the end of the month. If you notice unusual transactions, you were likely hacked.

You wake up to several notifications from your bank about strange activities on your account. Whether it is multiple failed attempts to log into your bank account or suspicious transactions, you realize that you did not make those attempts or purchases. If so, your bank account might have been hacked.

When you notice that you’re not able to log into your bank account, you usually give your bank a call only to be told your account has been closed without your knowledge or consent. This, too, can be a sign that your bank account has been hacked.

MORE: THIS IS HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CREDIT AND BANK CARDS FROM GETTING HACKED

While panic seems to be the most obvious reaction to your bank account being hacked, the exact opposite response, coupled with some of the action steps below, will put you on a better track. While the situation may feel overwhelming, it is important to take action steps in a timely manner, as some financial institutions have time parameters for recovering funds.

1. Call your bank directly. Use the number on the back of your bank card or on your bank statements to speak with a representative directly regarding your concerns. Depending on the level of concern, you may be redirected to the Fraud department.

2. If the hacker has only gotten ahold of your bank card, most banks and credit card companies allow you to deactivate or even freeze a card until you can secure your account. This way, no further transactions will be made with your missing card or stolen card number. Some banks allow you to freeze or deactivate your online account.

3. If you suspect hackers are trying to breach your account through numerous online login attempts, log in from a secure, virus- and malware-free device and change your password immediately. Also, make sure the email account associated with the potentially compromised bank account hasn’t been hacked. In addition, consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.

4. Contact the three main credit bureaus to freeze your credit. This will prevent anyone, including hackers, from wreaking havoc on your credit. Make sure to report any errors on your credit reports with the credit agencies as well.

5. File a report with the local authorities as well as the Federal Trade Commission.

6. To have the best chance at recovering stolen or lost funds, you should dispute them within 60 days, usually starting from the time the unauthorized charge or withdrawal shows up on your statement. Some banks require a physical letter, while others have an online dispute process.

MORE: HOW TO FIGHT BACK AGAINST DEBIT CARD HACKERS WHO ARE AFTER YOUR MONEY

Below are 10 ways to prevent your bank account from being hacked again or in the first place:

1. Switch to paperless statements to prevent mail theft — it limits the number of ways people can access sensitive information.

2. Use strong and unique passwords. Don't reuse passwords across different accounts. Aim for complex combinations of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols. Consider using a password manager to help you create and store strong passwords securely. Consider using a password manager to generate and store complex passwords.

3. Enable two-factor authentication. Two-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second verification code, typically sent to your phone or generated by an app, in addition to your password.

4. Review your bank statements regularly, so you can notice any unusual activities quickly.

5. Turn on alerts and notifications that your bank provides — you can set them for transactions over a specific amount, or if your balance drops under a certain amount.

TV HOST ANDY COHEN SWINDLED IN COSTLY BANK SCAM: HOW TO AVOID BECOMING A VICTIM YOURSELF

6. Request your annual credit report and keep abreast of your report, so you can dispute any errors quickly.

7. Keep track of your credit score, so that any changes to your score can alert you of suspicious activities — some credit card companies provide it for free.

8. Beware of phishing scams. Don't click on links or attachments in suspicious emails, even if they appear to be from your bank. Never enter your login credentials on websites you reach through email links. Always access your bank's website directly by typing the address in your browser or using a trusted bookmark.

9. Install and run antivirus software, so that hackers are less likely to access your bank account. The best way to protect yourself from clicking malicious links that install malware that may get access to your private information is to have antivirus protection installed on all your devices. This can also alert you of any phishing emails or ransomware scams. Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android & iOS devices.

10. Use identity theft protection services to monitor your accounts regularly and assist you if they are compromised. Identity Theft companies can monitor personal information like your Social Security Number (SSN), phone number and email address and alert you if it is being sold on the dark web or being used to open an account. They can also assist you in freezing your bank and credit card accounts to prevent further unauthorized use by criminals.

One of the best parts of using some services is that they might include identity theft insurance of up to $1 million to cover losses and legal fees and a white glove fraud resolution team where a U.S.-based case manager helps you recover any losses. See my tips and best picks on how to protect yourself from identity theft.

MORE: HOW THIS NEW BANKING TROJAN CAN STEAL YOUR FINANCIAL INFORMATION

Experiencing any of the "tell-tale" signs of having your bank account hacked is gut-wrenching, but there are action steps you can take to regain control as well as prevent future victimization. Staying aware of your accounts and transactions is as important as using the prevention tools and services that are available to you.

How comfortable do you feel with online banking security? However, the push to bring these essential facilities closer to urban centers demanded a rethink in their design approach.

MORE: THE DIZZYING VIEWS FROM THIS ENTIRE GLASS HOUSE ROTATING 360 DEGREES

Enter the Wave House, which challenges the status quo with its visually arresting wave-designed walls — a feature that not only lends the building its name but also marks a significant departure from conventional data center aesthetics. It measures 6,600 sq. ft. and was designed by SSV and Mense Korte and created by Peri 3D Construction for developer KrausGruppe.

FISH FILET CREATED VIA 3D PRINTER MAY BE HITTING MARKET IN THE NEAR FUTURE

The distinctive curvature of the Wave House's walls could not have been achieved through traditional building methods. Instead, the project leveraged 3D construction printing technology, specifically the COBOD BOD2 printer.

This machine pushed out a recyclable cement-like mixture to form the building's exterior. Achieving an impressive rate of 43 square feet per hour, the printer completed the walls in just 140 hours, demonstrating the efficiency and versatility of 3D printing in modern construction.

MORE: A BIRDHOUSE-INSPIRED TINY HOUSE NESTLED IN NATURE THAT RUNS ON SOLAR POWER

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Wave House represents a stride forward in sustainable building practices. The 3D-printed construction process emits significantly less CO2 compared to traditional methods, aligning with global efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of new developments.

Furthermore, the project showcases the potential for reducing costs and construction times, making it a compelling case study for future urban planning initiatives.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

MORE: HOW THIS TINY HOUSE FLIPS ITS DESIGN WITH UPSIDE DOWN LAYOUT

A milestone for 3D-printed architecture

The inauguration of the Wave House not only marks a significant advancement for the construction industry but also signals the growing acceptance of 3D-printed architecture in mainstream applications. From earthquake-resistant homes to ambitious developments of 100 3D-printed houses, the technology is proving its worth across a diverse range of projects.

COBOD, the company behind the technology, aims to automate at least 50% of building site processes, promising efficiency gains and potentially reshaping the labor landscape in construction.

The Wave House in Heidelberg is more than just a data center; it's a symbol of architectural innovation and a showcase for the potential of 3D printing in construction. By blending functionality with style, the project addresses the evolving needs of urban infrastructure and sets a new standard for data centers worldwide. As 3D printing technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see more projects that challenge traditional architectural norms, offering sustainable, efficient and visually compelling solutions for the cities of tomorrow.

Do you worry that 3D-printing construction will eliminate existing jobs in the construction industry?Let us know by writing us at Cyberguy.com/Contact

For more of my tech tips & security alerts, subscribe to my free CyberGuy Report Newsletter by heading to Cyberguy.com/Newsletter

Ask Kurt a question or let us know what stories you'd like us to cover.

Answers to the most-asked CyberGuy questions:

Copyright 2024 CyberGuy.com. 925.

Soon after Italian watchdog Garante took on ChatGPT with a temporary shutdown locally last year, it tried to strengthen its team by hiring four artificial intelligence (AI) experts.

But Italy's data protection agency could not recruit the people it wanted, with a dozen candidates dropping out over issues including pay, highlighting a growing challenge facing regulators around the world.

"The search process went worse than our low expectations," Garante board member Guido Scorza told Reuters, adding: "We will come up with something else, but so far we have lost."

KEEP THESE TIPS IN MIND TO AVOID BEING DUPED BY AI-GENERATED DEEPFAKES

Demand for AI experience and expertise has surged since OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT in late 2022, and regulators have found themselves vying for talent from the same shallow pool.

But relatively low pay, long hiring processes and visa problems are thwarting their hiring ambitions, industry participants familiar with the situation told Reuters.

Other public bodies in the European Union could soon face similar problems, just as the bloc rolls out some of the most sweeping and impactful AI regulations in the world.

The EU has been recruiting for its newly opened AI Office, which will oversee enforcement of the AI Act, as well as the European Centre for Algorithmic Transparency (ECAT) which covers both the AI Act and the Digital Services Act.

"The biggest problem will be enforcement and getting people for this," said EU lawmaker Dragos Tudorache, who oversaw the drafting of the AI Act.

Meanwhile, Britain continues to recruit for its own AI Safety Institute, launched in the wake of the summit it held for world leaders in October.

Many of the public sector roles advertised at these organizations offer salaries at a fraction of industry standards and appear geared towards recent graduates, which some warn may deter the best talent.

Around the world, governments have acknowledged the need for AI expertise to keep tabs on the rapidly-developing technology.

The United States has demonstrated a willingness to pay more and be more flexible about its recruitment processes.

Under President Joe Biden, the U.S. Office for Personnel Management (OPM) has granted government agencies the power to quickly hire AI expertise, as part of an ongoing "talent surge" in government, expediting the usual recruitment process.

In February, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched a first-of-its-kind initiative to create a new "AI Corps", aiming to recruit 50 AI experts.

A DHS job ad offers IT specialists, focused on AI, a salary of $143,000 per year, similar to the private sector.

By contrast, EU agencies, including the AI Office and ECAT, have offered around $65,166.

An EU spokesperson told Reuters that ECAT currently employed 35 experts, and planned to hire 100 more for the AI Office.

"Working with the Office presents a unique and thrilling opportunity for passionate professionals to contribute significantly to shaping trustworthy AI in Europe and beyond," they said.

In Britain, the AI Safety Institute has offered stronger incentives for its most senior posts. Recently advertised roles – including chief information security officer and head of engineering – offered up to $170,829.

However, other roles offered much less. One overseeing the societal impacts of AI offered up to 47,000 pounds.

Another British government role, at the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT), offered up to 76,000 pounds for a position as head of AI regulation strategy and implementation.

Ian Hogarth, chair of the AI Safety Institute, told Reuters the organization had successfully recruited experts from companies like Google DeepMind and OpenAI.

"While we do benchmark our salaries against those on offer in industry, the technical experts that are joining us from the top of their fields do so seeking more than a high salary," he said. "They are joining to contribute to a critical mission to make sure these models are safe."

Last month, a report by the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, which advises governments on policy matters, called on the UK government to relax normal recruitment rules, loosen pay restrictions and roll out new work visas for tech talent.

"Getting the depth of talent needed so that governments can not only ask the right questions, but also find solutions, will require a fundamental mindset shift in skills and culture," said the institute's Chief Policy Strategist Benedict Macon-Cooney.

 970.

Last year, Google developers embarked on a mission to revolutionize the way we use Google Maps.

With the introduction of Immersive View, they’ve taken a significant leap forward in improving our navigation experience.

This feature, along with others like "Glanceable" directions, has solidified Maps as a top contender among navigation apps on Android and iPhone.

CLICK TO GET KURT’S FREE CYBERGUY NEWSLETTER WITH SECURITY ALERTS, QUICK VIDEO TIPS, TECH REVIEWS AND EASY HOW-TO’S TO MAKE YOU SMARTER

MORE: BEST TRAVEL GEAR FOR 2024

Despite being announced last year, Glanceable directions seemed to have fallen off the radar. But now, this game-changing feature is making its debut, bringing essential navigation details like real-time ETA and turn-by-turn directions straight to your lock screen.

MORE: HOW GOOGLE MAPS IS GIVING YOU MORE POWER OVER YOUR LOCATION DATA

Google Maps has long been a guide for travelers worldwide. However, the need to frequently unlock your phone to check directions can be a distraction, particularly when driving. Glanceable Directions is Google’s innovative solution to this issue.

This feature allows you to preview a detailed, turn-by-turn route before starting navigation. It provides a comprehensive overview of the journey ahead, ensuring you’re familiar with the path before setting off. Once you begin your trip and hit the Start Navigation button, the convenience continues.

GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE

Glanceable directions operate directly from your phone’s lock screen, eliminating the need to unlock your device continually. Google Maps will seamlessly track your progress, offering updates and rerouting as necessary, whether you’re walking, driving or cycling.

Currently available to both iPhone and Android users, Glanceable directions is designed to integrate with Live Activities on iOS 16.1 for iPhone users. While it may not function flawlessly immediately upon activation, we advise you to allow some time for the system to adapt to your navigation habits for enhanced performance.

GOOGLE MAPS GETS MASSIVE AI UPGRADE WITH 5 NEW FEATURES

It’s worth noting that, by default, this valuable feature is inactive, which might explain why its presence has gone undetected for some time. However, once you enable "Glanceable" directions, with a simple glance, you can stay informed about your journey without the hassle of unlocking your phone.

MORE: THE GOOGLE MAPS TRICK CAN SUPERCHARGE YOUR ABILITY TO NAVIGATE DIRECTIONS

The rollout of Glanceable directions may have taken longer than anticipated, but its arrival is a welcome enhancement to Google Maps. It promises a safer, more convenient way to navigate, especially when driving. As we look to the future, we hope Google will continue to refine and expedite the deployment of such valuable features.

What do you think about this new addition to Google Maps? 1015.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced the establishment of a bipartisan Artificial Intelligence Task Force in February.

The task force's members, including Florida Republican Kat Cammack, have already had a few organizational meetings and met with AI leaders to discuss, among other topics, November's election.

"This is a critical issue that is going to really have an impact in every aspect of our lives, from here moving forward into the future," Cammack told Fox News Digital.

"I think [members are] pretty much on the same page as far as we recognize both the challenges but also the opportunities that come with AI. … Folks on the task force have a very pragmatic, forward-thinking, optimistic view of AI. But we are not blind to the fact that there are challenges"

AI WEAPON DETECTION COMPANY SEEKS TO PREVENT SCHOOL, OTHER SHOOTINGS: 'A PROACTIVE MEASURE'

Cammack says one of the immediate concerns of the task force is the impact AI will have in the 2024 election.

AI image tools generate election disinformation 41% of the time, and AI tools generate images promoting voting disinformation 59% of the time, according to a recent report published by the Center for Countering Digital Hate.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?

Cammack says the task force is "looking [to identify] some of the challenges that people are opening with AI-generated content, disclaimers [about] what that will mean in terms of deepfakes, how do we authenticate and watermark AI-generated content, images, videos, etc."

SPEAKER JOHNSON MEETS WITH OPENAI CEO, SAYS CONGRESS ‘NEEDS TO PLAY’ ROLE IN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

The Center for Countering Digital Hate report found examples of image disinformation, such as a photo of President Biden sick in a hospital bed and a photo of former President Trump sitting in a jail cell.

Tech giant Meta requires paid users to disclose when potentially misleading AI-generated or altered content is featured in political, electoral or social issue ads.

"You'll have all these discussions about [how content] should be watermarked. … We've already seen where AI can take off a watermark on an AI-generated product. That's just a Band-Aid," Cammack said. "We need to get to the root solution and establish a protocol in place that will prevent mass confusion."

Cammack says she and her team are working on a framework that would allow for a blockchain authentication model to exist.

"I see blockchain as a future mechanism to help authenticate material, and that will be really important for candidates and for legislators in such a rapid environment. Having your photos, your videos, all of your content authenticated with a very secure technology like blockchain, that will be very, very important," she said.

The Florida Republican said the task force should be wary of the overregulation of artificial intelligence, saying her focus will be to protect access in the marketplace for some of the smaller players and ensure there is no bias.

"The worst thing government can do is stamp out innovation through overregulation. My hope is to really address some of the language model challenges on the front end to make sure that we're weeding out bias. We're not inherently pushing answers to fit a political agenda," she said.

 1054.
 1055.
Deepfakes have become commonplace, and the technology is only getting better, but there are certain elements that might give away the fact that an image is AI-generated.

 1056.
 1057.
 1058.

AI fakery is quickly becoming one of the biggest problems confronting us online. Deceptive pictures, videos and audio are proliferating as a result of the rise and misuse of generative artificial intelligence tools.

With AI deepfakes cropping up almost every day, depicting everyone from Taylor Swift to Donald Trump, it's getting harder to tell what's real from what's not. Video and image generators like DALL-E, Midjourney and OpenAI’s Sora make it easy for people without any technical skills to create deepfakes — just type a request and the system spits it out.

These fake images might seem harmless. But they can be used to carry out scams and identity theft or propaganda and election manipulation.

AI DEEPFAKES ARE ENDANGERING DEMOCRACY. HERE ARE 4 WAYS TO FIGHT BACK

Here is how to avoid being duped by deepfakes:

In the early days of deepfakes, the technology was far from perfect and often left telltale signs of manipulation. Fact-checkers have pointed out images with obvious errors, like hands with six fingers or eyeglasses that have differently shaped lenses.

But as AI has improved, it has become a lot harder. Some widely shared advice — such as looking for unnatural blinking patterns among people in deepfake videos — no longer holds, said Henry Ajder, founder of consulting firm Latent Space Advisory and a leading expert in generative AI.

Still, there are some things to look for, he said.

A lot of AI deepfake photos, especially of people, have an electronic sheen to them, "an aesthetic sort of smoothing effect" that leaves skin "looking incredibly polished," Ajder said.

He warned, however, that creative prompting can sometimes eliminate this and many other signs of AI manipulation.

Check the consistency of shadows and lighting. Often the subject is in clear focus and appears convincingly lifelike but elements in the backdrop might not be so realistic or polished.

Face-swapping is one of the most common deepfake methods. Experts advise looking closely at the edges of the face. Does the facial skin tone match the rest of the head or the body? Are the edges of the face sharp or blurry?

If you suspect a video of a person speaking has been doctored, look at their mouth. Do their lip movements match the audio perfectly?

Ajder suggests looking at the teeth. Are they clear, or are they blurry and somehow not consistent with how they look in real life?

Cybersecurity company Norton says algorithms might not be sophisticated enough yet to generate individual teeth, so a lack of outlines for individual teeth could be a clue.

Sometimes the context matters. Take a beat to consider whether what you're seeing is plausible.

The Poynter journalism website advises that if you see a public figure doing something that seems "exaggerated, unrealistic or not in character," it could be a deepfake.

For example, would the pope really be wearing a luxury puffer jacket, as depicted by a notorious fake photo? If he did, wouldn't there be additional photos or videos published by legitimate sources?

Another approach is to use AI to fight AI.

Microsoft has developed an authenticator tool that can analyze photos or videos to give a confidence score on whether it's been manipulated. Chipmaker Intel's FakeCatcher uses algorithms to analyze an image's pixels to determine if it's real or fake.

There are tools online that promise to sniff out fakes if you upload a file or paste a link to the suspicious material. But some, like Microsoft's authenticator, are only available to selected partners and not the public. That's because researchers don't want to tip off bad actors and give them a bigger edge in the deepfake arms race.

Open access to detection tools could also give people the impression they are "godlike technologies that can outsource the critical thinking for us" when instead, we need to be aware of their limitations, Ajder said.

All this being said, artificial intelligence has been advancing with breakneck speed and AI models are being trained on internet data to produce increasingly higher-quality content with fewer flaws.

That means there’s no guarantee this advice will still be valid even a year from now.

Experts say it might even be dangerous to put the burden on ordinary people to become digital Sherlocks because it could give them a false sense of confidence as it becomes increasingly difficult, even for trained eyes, to spot deepfakes.
