60. The annual winter Broadway Week 2-for-1 ticket promotion – it’s actually several weeks, but no one’s complaining – arrived January 21, and as usual the promotion took a bite into grosses, with total attendance holding steady from the previous week but receipts dropping 11%.

 61.

 62. In all, the 29 shows grosses $29,614,804, with total attendance at 246,230. Average ticket price for the week ending January 26 was $120.27, about $13 cheaper than the previous week.

 63.

 64. Making a promising arrival was Redwood, the new musical starring Idina Menzel, the crowd-pleasing original star of Wicked and Rent. Directed by Tina Landau, the musical played two previews, selling out and grossing $397,117 at the Nederlander. Opening night is February 13.

 65.

 66. In its official opening week, the Pulitzer Prize-winning English took in $264,480 for three previews and five regular performances, filling about 81% at the Todd Haimes. Last week’s good reviews could prompt an upturn in business.

 67.

 68. The popular comedy Oh, Mary! saw a slight dip in attendance with the departure of original star Cole Escola, but just slight, dropping from its usual sell-out status to 98% of capacity. American Primeval‘s Betty Gilpin is in the lead for an eight-week run; the production grossed $926,002, a $327,869 drop from the previous week, likely a combination of Escola’s departure and the 2-for-1 promo.

 69.

 70. The Outsiders canceled its Saturday matinee but still raked in $1,136,472 for the week, attendance SRO at 101%.

 71.

 72. Also selling out were Romeo + Juliet ($967,398) and All In: Comedy About Love ($1,424,599), Simon Rich’s revolving cast production (last week was Lin-Manuel Miranda, Aidy Bryant, Nick Kroll and Andrew Rannells; Jimmy Fallon takes over for Rannells tonight).

 73.

 74. Topping the box office chart last week was, once again, Wicked, taking in $2,415,881. Gypsy was at #2 with $1,781,714.

 75.

 76. Season to date, Broadway, in the 36th week of the 2024-25 season, has grossed $1,232,792,072 up about 18% over last year at this time, with total attendance of 9,622,648 up 16%.

 77.

 78. The Broadway Week promotion runs through February 9.

 127.

 128. Displaying the results of a Gallup poll on a video monitor showing record low trust in media, Leavitt said that “it’s essential to our team that we share President Trump’s message everywhere and adapt this White House to the new media landscape in 2025.”

 129.

 130. Leavitt said that a seat in the briefing room — previously occupied by the press secretary’s staff — would be designated as the “new media” seat. The first person to occupy it, though, was Mike Allen, co-founder of Axios and a longtime veteran of Beltway media coverage.

 131.

 132. Leavitt promised to “work diligently” to restore press passes that were “wrongly revoked” by the previous administration. Policies were changed by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre after one reporter, Simon Abeta, repeatedly disrupted briefings. The new guidelines were made more stringent, including proof of full-time employment with an outlet that is devoted to news gathering.

 133.

 134. Leavitt said that those eligible for the White House passes would be open to “new media voices who produce news-related content and whose outlet is not already represented by one of the seats in this room. We welcome independent journalists, podcasters, social media influencers and content creators to apply.”

 385.
In February, the Rock Hall of Famers will it all over again.

 386.
The “Life In The Fast Lane” group are slated to bring their timeless hits to the groundbreaking venue on Feb. 14-15 and Feb. 21-22.

 387.
At all shows, The Eagles perform roughly 20 tracks — think biggies like “Hotel California” and “Take It Easy” as well as cuts from Henley and Walsh’s work outside the group — in front of a breathtaking backdrop that brings the lyrics to life.

 388.
Variety reported “the most impressive video piece of the night…arrived with Henley’s ‘The Boys of Summer,’ which starts on a beach but quickly moves under the waves, for a beautifully photographed water ballet involving a female and male swimmer,” in a review of The Eagles’ Sphere debut.

 389.
“Something that hasn’t been done that much so far at any of the Sphere shows is putting actual human actors, or dancers, on screen … and it works remarkably well in this bubbly tableau.”

 390.
If you’d like to witness this one-of-a-kind spectacle live, tickets are still available for all Eagles February shows as well as their March and April gigs.

 391.
At the time of publication, the lowest price we could find on seats for one of the four February concerts was $257 before fees on Vivid Seats.

 392.
As for the March and April performances, prices start at $243 before fees.

 492.
When you’ve been “taking it to the limit” since 1971, there’s bound to be a bit of shakeup in your group.

 493.
Still, after 50+ years together, 77-year-old founding member Don Henley (drums, vocals, also known for the ’80s smash “Boys of Summer), continues to head the group.

 494.
At all Sphere dates, he’s joined by 77-year-old Joe Walsh (who lent his talents to the James Gang), 77-year-old Timothy B. Schmit (bassist and vocalist who played with Poco), 22-time Grammy winner Vince Gill and the late Glenn Frey’s 31-year-old son Deacon.

 495.
Past members that are no longer with the band include Frey (who passed in 2016) and Randy Meisner (died in 2023). Bernie Leadon is still alive but hasn’t played with the band since 2016. As for guitartist Don Felder, he tours with Styx and REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin.

 496.
Over the course of the group’s 53+ years together, The Eagles have received six Grammy Awards, performed over 1,000 concerts, and sold over 150 million albums.

 550.
A Las Vegas ice-cream truck has sparked fears of mass illegal-migrant deportation raids after it was mistaken for an Immigration and Customs Enforcement vehicle — leaving its distraught owner to stress, “I’m an ice cream man, that’s it.”

 551.
Billy Settlemyers, the owner of Las Vegas Ice Cream Patrol, found himself in the middle of a firestorm last week after an ill-advised social-media user blasted out images of his truck and suggested it was part of an elaborate plot to round up illegal migrants.

 556.
“Please be on the lookout for ‘ice cream’ trucks. … They ever play music to get people to come outside. … This is actually so sick,” the user posted alongside a since-deleted TikTok video.

 557.
The misguided warning immediately stoked fears that Settlemyers’ sweet-treat business was actually a cover for a federal government operation.

 558.
“ICE and Border Patrol don’t use trucks from 1985,” Settlemyers told 8 News Now in the wake of the backlash.

 574.
“I feel kind of like a target,” Settlemyers told the outlet.

 634.
Advances in artificial intelligence by Chinese upstarts rattled U.S. markets on Monday, with the threat of greater competition prompting a slide in shares of the biggest technology companies.

 635.
The Chinese A.I. company DeepSeek has said it can match the abilities of cutting-edge chatbots while using a fraction of the specialized computer chips that leading A.I. companies rely on. That’s prompted investors to rethink the heady valuations of companies like Nvidia, whose equipment powers the most advanced A.I. systems, as well as the enormous investments that companies like Alphabet, Meta and OpenAI are making to build their businesses.

 636.
On Monday, the S&P 500 index fell 1.5 percent, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq dropped 3.1 percent. Nvidia was hit hard, plunging 16.9 percent and losing roughly $600 billion in market value. Falling tech stocks also dented market indexes in Europe and Japan.

 637.

 638.

 639.

 640.

 641.
Excitement over the prospects for A.I. had helped send technology stocks soaring over the past year, but concerns have been rising, too. Investors have become increasingly worried that the small cohort of tech companies that drove the broader market’s gains won’t live up to the lofty expectations that their sky-high prices suggest.

 642.

 643.

 644.

 645.

 646.
The pain was concentrated at companies at the forefront of the A.I. boom, including the multitrillion-dollar behemoths that drove the largest back-to-back annual gains for U.S. markets since the 1990s. Alphabet and Microsoft fell, and in addition to Nvidia, other chipmakers like Arm, Broadcom and Micron, and semiconductor equipment specialists like ASML slid.

 647.
DeepSeek could be the start of a new phase in how investors think about A.I., said Steve Sosnick, chief strategist at Interactive Brokers. He called it a “big slap in the face” for investors that could reset the way they calculate risk.

 648.
The Chinese company unveiled its new system last month but grabbed the tech world’s attention late last week with a research paper detailing how it built the technology. That “serves as a reminder that competition in the global A.I. arena is intensifying, and Nvidia may not be in the pole position forever,” Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo Bank, wrote in a research note.

 649.
DeepSeek’s chatbot became the most-downloaded free app in Apple’s App Store in the United States on Monday, overtaking OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The company temporarily limited new registrations, in response to what it described as “large-scale malicious attacks” on its service.

 650.

 651.

 652.

 653.

 654.
Shares of Google’s parent Alphabet and Microsoft, which have bet heavily on A.I., fell 4.2 and 2.1 percent on Monday. Oracle, which is a partner in a joint venture with OpenAI and SoftBank, unveiled at an event with President Trump last week, dropped almost 14 percent. SoftBank shed more than 8 percent during trading in Tokyo.

 655.
(The New York Times has sued OpenAI and its partner, Microsoft, claiming copyright infringement of news content related to A.I. systems. The two tech companies have denied the suit’s claims.)

 656.
Some tech giants bucked the trend. Meta, which last week announced a big jump in its spending plans for data centers, wobbled in early trading before posting a small gain. Apple, which was relatively late to enter the A.I. arms race, rose 3.25 percent.

 657.
The overall tech sector of the S&P 500 has had a rocky start to the year, losing 4 percent of its value, while every other major sector has gained over the same period. Because of the tech industry’s size and influence, this has weighed on the S&P 500 index, which is up 2.2 percent for the year.

 658.

 659.

 660.

 661.

 662.
The recent upheaval casts a cloud over the tech giants as Meta, Microsoft and others prepare to present their latest quarterly earnings this week. Looking beyond bumper profits from the past, analysts could press executives about their companies’ financial prospects in the future under stiffer global competition.

 663.
“The market naturally will worry about demand growth in computing power,” analysts at Jefferies wrote in a note. DeepSeek’s apparent breakthroughs on cost and efficiency “could prompt investors to ask hard questions” of tech leaders about their weighty investments in chips and data centers, they added.

 664.
Venture capital firms have also bet big on A.I., investing some $130 billion on start-ups in the field last year, according to PitchBook. One out of every three venture dollars in total went to an A.I. startup, the data provider noted.

 665.
The turmoil also pummeled the stocks of utility companies that have opened new lines of business serving the voracious power needs of data centers. Power companies like Constellation Energy, GE Vernova and Vistra each plunged more than 20 percent, partly reversing a long-running rally that has seen the power producer’s stock more than double over the past 12 months.

 666.
U.S. Treasury yields fell sharply, as they often do when investors seek havens during times of turbulence. Yields move inversely to the price of debt, meaning that the value of Treasuries jumped on Monday.

 667.

 668.

 669.

 670.

 671.
That weighed on the value of the dollar, which fell modestly against a basket of currencies of major U.S. trading partners. These moves faded somewhat in the afternoon as investors refocused on this week’s meeting of Federal Reserve officials, who are expected to pause their campaign of interest-rate cuts.

 672.
Mr. Trump has promised to accelerate the production of American-made A.I. to compete against China for global leadership in the technology. Last week, he signed an executive order aimed at “removing barriers” to the development of artificial intelligence. As the U.S. government works to maintain the country’s lead in the A.I. race, it is trying to limit the number of powerful chips, like those made by Nvidia, that can be sold to China and other rivals.

 673.
While acknowledging the potential of DeepSeek’s systems, analysts at Bernstein noted that their “initial reaction does not include panic.” Any computing capacity freed up by more efficient A.I. systems would be absorbed by fast-growing demand, they said: “We are still going to need, and get, a lot of chips.”

 706.
General Motors faced questions Tuesday about the impact of potential moves by the Trump administration targeting trade and the environment, with the uncertainty overshadowing the company’s latest results.

 707.
The big US automaker reported a quarterly loss due to costs from restructuring a China initiative, though that was offset by a 2025 earnings forecast that topped analyst expectations.

 708.
However its projections did not try to quantify the effects of new tariffs that Trump has threatened on key markets in which GM operates, such as Mexico, or the White House’s planned rollback of policies promoting electric vehicles.

 709.
Acknowledging the “uncertainty,” Chief Executive Mary Barra said the company had been “proactive” in engaging the Trump administration and Congress.

 710.
“We have stressed the importance of a strong manufacturing sector and American leadership in advanced technologies,” Barra said in a letter to shareholders. “It’s clear that we share a lot of common ground, and we appreciate the dialogue.”

 711.
Barra pledged to be “agile” in responding to any shifts.

 712.
GM shares tumbled around 10 percent shortly after midday. Shares rose nearly 50 percent in 2024.

 713.
In the fourth quarter, GM reported a loss of $3.0 billion compared with profits of $2.1 billion a year ago.

 714.
Revenues rose 11 percent to $47.7 billion.

 715.
The company projected 2025 earnings of between $11 and $12 per share, above analyst expectations.

 716.
GM garnered higher auto sales in the fourth quarter led by its home market, where pricing remained strong. But the earnings were dented by a $4 billion in non-cash costs from revamping the SAIC General Motors Corporation.

 717.
The company had signaled the hit in early December as it sought to bring down costs and clear out inventory in China.

 718.
GM’s 2025 outlook includes the full-year availability of sport utility vehicles revamped in 2024, as well as new EVs under the Cadillac brand set to launch.

 719.
But executives faced multiple questions about how the fast-changing policy landscape affects its outlook.

 720.
Barra said the company has been studying “multiple scenarios” on tariffs. Trump has threatened punishing 25 percent duties on all goods from Canada and Mexico, and 10 percent on goods from China, starting February 1.

 721.
GM builds trucks in both Canada and Mexico, but “we have the capacity in the United States to shift some of that,” she said.

 722.
The company is “encouraged” that Mexico’s leader, Claudia Sheinbaum, has indicated that they are working to avoid tariffs, she said.

 723.
“But we’re doing the planning… and have several levers we can pull.”

 724.
GM also faced questions over EVs, which have emerged as a punching bag of the new White House.

 725.
GM officials are targeting production of 300,000 EVs in 2025.

 726.
One of Trump’s executive orders last week pledged to undo policies that disadvantage gasoline-powered cars, and opened the door to removing tax credits for EV purchases and to a fight over California’s strict climate policies.

 727.
“There’s a lot of moving parts out there,” said Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson, who described GM as having “multiple playbooks” to respond.

 728.
“The reason that we guided to the status quo is because there are really infinite permutations on policy,” Jacobson said.

 729.
“But rest assures … we’ve got plans in place, and we’re continuing to work proactively with the administration and with Congress on what we think are the right things to do, which is preserve American jobs and preserve American innovation.”

 760.
China-based DeepSeek’s artificial intelligence model has shaken the sector by offering high performance apparently at a fraction of the cost of those developed by US giants, with many experts saying the release also hints at opportunity for investment minnow Europe.

 761.
DeepSeek’s large language model (LLM) is “making a mockery of the (idea that) we need a trillion dollars to train the next level of AGI”, or artificial general intelligence, said Neil Lawrence, machine learning professor at Britain’s University of Cambridge.

 762.
He was referring to the US announcement last week of a pharaonic “Stargate” programme to build $500 billion worth of AI infrastructure, a plan led by ChatGPT creator OpenAI.

 763.
Largely destined to be pumped into data centres packed with the latest AI chips, the scale of the sums underscored that almost no European firm can access the resources to compete at the cutting edge.

 764.
But DeepSeek’s claim that it succeeded in producing a model with similar capabilities to OpenAI’s for just $5.6 million has upended those certainties.

 765.
The technology promised “models that are more efficient and less hungry for GPUs [graphic processing units], for energy and for cash,” Laurent Daudet, chief executive of French generative AI company LightOn, told AFP.

 766.
“It’s interesting for Europe to see that we don’t need a Stargate project to do something interesting… to innovate, you don’t need $500 billion,” he said.

 767.
The shock has battered AI-related tech stocks in recent days, including key chipmaker Nvidia.

 768.
“It shows that competition is very, very strong and that there’ll be a price war too,” said Nicolas Gaudemet, AI chief at the consulting firm Onepoint.

 769.
“An additional provider will bring prices down,” he predicted.

 770.
Cambridge professor Lawrence said it was a “tragedy” that DeepSeek had not emerged from Europe’s deep reserves of AI talent in both academia and business.

 771.
But he added that DeepSeek’s “small change in the recipe” was just “a glimpse of the innovation” ahead.

 772.
“It is very encouraging for Europe… there will be more than one DeepSeek,” he said.

 773.
Lawrence singled out for praise DeepSeek’s open-source methodology, under which the developers exposed the guts of their project to the wider AI community, which can then build further on it.

 774.
That was good news for European contenders such as France’s Mistral, Gaudemet said.

 775.
“They can reuse (DeepSeek’s models) to train up theirs and stay in the race,” he said, though “they’ll have to be very good, because the competition isn’t just between the US and Europe — China is showing that it’s capable”.

 776.
Jonas Andrulis, CEO of German AI firm Aleph Alpha, told AFP his company was already offering DeepSeek’s capabilities to clients.

 777.
But he added that he had long expected such models to “become a commodity”.

 778.
“We have to drive meaningful innovation beyond ‘Hey, those guys also did an LLM’,” Andrulis said.

 779.
Cheaper AI could mean more tools adapted for local markets and individual businesses rather than a massively resourced and centralised model.

 780.
“There is a future for more frugal models that can perform just as well, especially for business needs,” LightOn’s Daudet said.

 781.
He described his company’s role as building the “chassis” of a usable vehicle around the “motor” of an AI model — “how a business can use it in a totally secure, personalisable way, with all the guarantees they want”.

 782.
“There’s obviously a card to be played for (European) companies, which is security, the aspect of ‘your data will stay in Europe’ and be handled by people whose interests are… in Europe,” Onepoint’s Gaudemet said.

 783.
“A lot of countries in the world that are not the US or China feel a little bit uneasy to accept full-on dependencies to one of those two power blocs,” said Andrulis.

 784.
“This is a valid strategy to basically be the collaborative, fair, open third way that’s not trying to strong-arm you in one way or the other.”

 785.
Europe has “some of the strongest researchers in the world and bottom-up, we understand where those strengths are”, Lawrence said.

 786.
“We don’t need massive amounts of investment, but we do need people who are listening to people in their own countries and their own continent… not having their heads turned by whatever (OpenAI chief) Sam Altman’s latest narrative is,” he added.

 840.
A leaked memo from Laurence des Cars, director of the Musée du Louvre, was published in Le Parisien last week, sparking a national debate so urgent that French President Emmanuel Macron held a press conference at the museum this morning (Jan. 28) to assess the damage. The letter, originally intended for Culture Minister Rachida Dati, openly acknowledged that the 12th-century building housing the world’s most famous museum is not just overrun by tourists—it’s literally falling apart. Des Cars described “structural damages” due to long-delayed renovations that have become so dire that <keyword data-keyword-id="278283">water</keyword> leaks now threaten priceless art, while temperature fluctuations put conservation efforts at risk. The Louvre, she wrote, faces “the harsh reality of the state of our overcrowded buildings,” many of which are “reaching a worrying level of obsolescence.” It goes on to enumerate a list of concerns related to spaces “sometimes badly deteriorated” and “no longer watertight” and visitor experiences so grueling that, as Des Cars herself put it, a trip to the museum has become “a real physical test.”

 841.

 842.

 843.
Yet despite the Louvre’s decrepit state, its 8.9 million visitors in 2023 still made it the most-visited museum in the world, even with that number being down from 2019’s 10 million. Some renovations have already been tackled, including a three-year, €50 million overhaul of the glass pyramid’s entrance hall—the very same space where Macron hosted the official Olympic dinner. But, as Des Cars pointedly noted, the pyramid turns the hall into an inhospitable greenhouse in summer, a fact that somehow escaped planners until after the upgrades were complete.

 844.
While the Louvre has declined to issue further statements in the wake of the media fallout, The Art Newspaper reported that the museum’s leadership, internally and in communications with state bodies, has already calculated the staggering price tag for urgent renovations: a minimum of €1 billion. To put that in perspective, that’s 30 percent more than the entire €900 million reconstruction of Notre Dame, a five-year restoration effort miraculously funded by 340,000 donors from 150 countries—with corporate heavyweights LVMH (LVMHF), Kering and L’Oréal leading the charge. And now, unsurprisingly, the same French luxury behemoths are expected to step up to rescue the Louvre from its slow-motion collapse. Sources suggest LVMH is already preparing to announce its commitment to preserving this cornerstone of French cultural pride.

 848.
Notably, France has a tax system that incentivizes companies to contribute to the preservation of national cultural heritage and institutions through the Corporate Income Tax Deduction for Patronage. Under this fiscally alluring policy, companies can deduct 60 percent of their cultural contributions from taxable income, capped at 0.5 percent of their annual turnover.

 849.
Meanwhile, Dati had already advised the Louvre to increase the price of the entrance ticket for tourists coming from outside the European Union to try to raise more funds from its own ticketing, which last year generated €161 million together with events. During his visit this morning, Macron confirmed this action.

 850.
The outlook for France’s budget deficit is even more alarming, with public debt hitting a record 113.7 percent of GDP in the third quarter, according to the National Statistics Institute in December. Worse yet, projections suggest it could climb to 119 percent by 2029, forcing some painful budget cuts and making grand-scale cultural restorations a particularly tricky sell.

 851.
Across town, the Centre Pompidou is set to undergo its own five-year renovation with €50 million from Saudi Arabia that has helped soften its €262 million price tag. The Louvre has its own outside funding sources, including its lucrative brand licensing deal with the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which brought in €83 million in 2023. But with Saudi money already flowing into French cultural preservation, it wouldn’t be shocking if the Louvre found itself next in line for a financial lifeline from Riyadh.

 852.
Italy seizes on a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

 853.
Having an ancient heritage and a museum system built on centuries-old foundations comes with a hefty price tag—a reality Italy knows all too well. In recent years, the country’s flagship museums and monuments have undergone ambitious renovations, not just to preserve their historic grandeur but to bring the historic facilities up to modern standards. Additionally, there have been efficiency upgrades, renovations for improved accessibility and updates to ensure displays engage today’s audiences effectively. One of the most notable of these is the ongoing renovation of the Colosseum focused on improving accessibility and restoring sections of the ancient amphitheater, which was funded to a significant degree by a generous €25 million donation. Museums like the Bargello, the National Archeological Museums in Florence or the $150 million “Grande Pompei,” among others, saw considerable investments to improve accessibility and enhance the overall visitor experience with new services.

 855.
Italy is now seizing on the Louvre’s distress call with an offer to welcome the iconic Mona Lisa (La Gioconda) back to Italy—at least temporarily. The first official to weigh in was Francesca Caruso, the regional assessor for culture in Italy’s Lombardy region, who, in a Facebook post last weekend, suggested the possibility of bringing the painting back to Milan for the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. “We are ready to welcome her back,” she wrote, tagging all the major national newspapers that had reported on the Louvre’s SOS and highlighting Lombardy’s offer to temporarily house the precious painting in Milan, which could better accommodate its strict conservation requirements. While Da Vinci was not born in Milan, the city claims him as one of its own because he lived there for 17 years under the patronage of Duke Ludovico Sforza.

 856.
Des Cars’ letter highlighted the inadequate conditions of the overcrowded room where the Mona Lisa is currently displayed, emphasizing the need to “reassess” its presentation and to feature the iconic artwork in a dedicated space. While sources report that renovating an additional room specifically for the famous painting has been estimated at €400 million, Macron, speaking at the conference, confirmed that the painting will move to a new, dedicated room inside the museum.

 857.
This isn’t the first time someone has tried to bring the masterpiece back to Italy. In 1911, Vincenzo Peruggia famously stole it, driven by patriotism and the belief that it rightfully belonged to Italy. While the painting was most likely created by Da Vinci in Italy for a Florentine silk merchant who commissioned the painting of his wife Lisa del Giocondo in 1503, as reported by Vasari, Leonardo continued working on it for at least four years and eventually took it to France when he was invited by King Francis I. He kept at it until at least 1517, and after his death in 1519, the work was acquired by King Francis I, officially entering France’s national collection, where it has remained ever since—except for the three years following its theft by Peruggia.

 858.
We’re drawn to Mona Lisa’s mysterious expression, Da Vinci’s mastery of light and the painting’s unmistakable atmospheric quality, but its global fame and legendary status largely stem from the early 20th-century theft, which catapulted it into international headlines and solidified its place in cultural history. The saga ended perfectly: Peruggia was caught in 1913 after attempting to sell the work to an art dealer in Florence, and the painting was triumphantly returned to the Louvre in 1914. While debates over its repatriation have never really disappeared, Caruso later clarified in several newspapers that the offer was not about reclaiming the painting but about offering to host it while the French government decides how best to safely display it.
