A small business owner’s decision to withhold a Michelin-starred restaurant‘s laundry over unpaid invoices has struck a chord with online readers, with many supporting his direct action.

The owner, who runs a pickup and delivery laundry service in a major city, explained on Reddit this week that they had a contract with a two-star Michelin restaurant, handling their tablecloths and napkins.

Despite offering competitive rates, the restaurant’s finance manager, identified as “M,” routinely attempted to renegotiate prices after services were completed.

Decisive Move

While the logistics manager, “A,” appreciated the company‘s reliability, M continuously withheld payments, pressuring the laundry business to accept lower amounts.

After months of delayed payments, the restaurant owed the business $1,700—money the owner could not afford to lose.

Frustrated with ongoing disputes, he and his business partner made a decisive move: They withheld the restaurant’s clean and pressed laundry until full payment was made.

“I told A that M could stuff it,” original poster (OP) Altruistic-Slide-512 declared.

“We have all your laundry—it’s all pressed and ready. It’s Monday. You’re planning to open again on Tuesday.

“When you pay us in full for this order and everything that you owe us for previous orders IN CASH, you’ll get your laundry back.”

Rather than fight the demand, A took the matter to the restaurant’s other owners, who swiftly agreed to pay. The head chef, rather than M, met with the laundry service and handed over a check, which successfully cleared.

Although A later proposed continuing the business relationship under better terms, the OP declined, relieved to move on from the ordeal.

‘Good for you!’

Many Reddit users praised the owner’s strategy, pointing out that small businesses are often put in impossible situations when large clients refuse to pay on time.

One user commented, “If they can charge $400 a plate, they can pay their invoices. Good for you!”

Another added, “People love to squeeze the little guy because they think they can get away with it. You made the right call.”

The situation reflects broader concerns faced by small business owners, particularly regarding unpaid invoices.

According to Business News Daily, cash flow issues are one of the leading reasons small businesses struggle or fail. Late payments from clients can create huge financial strain, forcing owners to make tough decisions about how to recover lost funds.

Newsweek has reported that small businesses often hesitate to take strong measures against larger clients due to fear of losing future work. However, experts argue that small businesses should take a firmer stance, just as larger corporations would.

“You have to protect your bottom line,” a financial expert told Newsweek.

“If a client doesn’t pay, they’re not really a client.”

While some might argue that holding a customer’s property until payment is received is extreme, many small business owners see it as a necessary action when dealing with repeated non-payment.

‘No plan B’

The laundry service owner expressed, “No regrets!”, about his approach, emphasizing that businesses relying on essential services should respect the work that keeps them running.

“Don’t try to stiff a small business that stands between you and setting tables for $20,000 worth of seatings in your fancy restaurant when you have no plan B,” the OP summed up.

When Donald J. Trump sued CBS for $10 billion days before the 2024 election, accusing the company of deceptively editing a “60 Minutes” interview with Vice President Kamala Harris, many legal experts dismissed the litigation as a far-fetched attempt to punish an out-of-favor news outlet.

Now Mr. Trump is back in the White House, and many executives at CBS’s parent company, Paramount, believe that settling the lawsuit would increase the odds that the Trump administration does not block or delay their planned multibillion-dollar merger with another company, according to several people with knowledge of the matter.

Settlement discussions between representatives of Paramount and Mr. Trump are now underway, according to three people with knowledge of the talks. There is no assurance, though, that they will result in a deal, and it is unclear what the terms of any such deal might include.

Shari Redstone, Paramount’s controlling shareholder, strongly supports the effort to settle, according to two people with knowledge of her thinking. Ms. Redstone stands to clear billions of dollars on the sale of Paramount, the media empire founded by her father Sumner Redstone, in a deal with Skydance, an entertainment company backed by the billionaire Larry Ellison and run by his son David.

A settlement would be an extraordinary concession by a major U.S. media company to a sitting president, especially in a case in which there is no evidence that the network got facts wrong or damaged the plaintiff’s reputation.

It could also cause an uproar within CBS News and among the “60 Minutes” staff. Journalists at the network have expressed deep concern about the notion of their parent company settling litigation that they consider tantamount to a politician’s standard-issue gripes about a news organization’s editorial judgment, according to several people familiar with internal discussions.

Edward Paltzik, Mr. Trump’s lawyer on the case, wrote in a statement on Thursday: “Real accountability for CBS and Paramount will ensure that the president is compensated for the harm done to him, and will deter the Fake News from further distorting the facts to advance a partisan agenda. President Trump looks forward to seeing this case through to a just conclusion.”

During the “60 Minutes” interview at the center of the lawsuit, which aired in October, the CBS correspondent Bill Whitaker asked Ms. Harris a question about the conflict in the Middle East.

In a preview of the interview that aired on “Face the Nation,” CBS’s Sunday morning show, Ms. Harris was shown giving a different answer than the one she gave in the version of the interview that was broadcast the next evening on “60 Minutes.”

Mr. Trump’s team accused “60 Minutes” of selecting a more coherent quote from Ms. Harris for the prime-time telecast in order to boost her candidacy. CBS News said that Ms. Harris had given one lengthy answer to Mr. Whitaker’s question, and that the network followed standard journalistic practice by airing a different portion of her answer in prime-time because of time constraints.

“The interview was not doctored,” CBS News said in a statement in October, adding that it “did not hide any part of” Ms. Harris’s answer. At the time, the network described Mr. Trump’s lawsuit as “completely without merit.”

Mr. Trump’s legal complaint relied on a largely untested interpretation of a Texas law that prohibits deceptive trade practices in things like marketing products to consumers. Among other objections to the lawsuit, CBS lawyers have noted that Mr. Trump’s standing to bring the suit in Texas was tenuous at best.

Regardless of the lawsuit’s merit, Mr. Trump’s administration wields leverage. Because Paramount owns broadcasting licenses, it needs the blessing of the Federal Communications Commission to complete its planned merger with Skydance.

People inside Paramount have been expecting the F.C.C., which is now led by a Trump appointee, Brendan Carr, to request that CBS News hand over an unedited transcript of its interview with Ms. Harris, according to people with knowledge of the plans. CBS had refused previous requests from Mr. Trump’s lawyers to release the transcript.

Mr. Carr has said that the commission would probably look into the “60 Minutes” interview as part of its review of the Paramount merger.

Mr. Trump’s demonization of the news media is a centerpiece of his political rise, and he has repeatedly clashed with “60 Minutes,” which is the country’s most popular television news show. He declined to be interviewed by the program during last year’s presidential race. In 2020, Mr. Trump cut short an interview with Lesley Stahl after becoming irritated with her questions; his campaign then posted unfiltered footage from the interview online.

In recent months, “60 Minutes” has also faced scrutiny from Ms. Redstone herself, who complained to CBS executives about a story featuring State Department employees who expressed misgivings about the Biden administration’s handling of the war between Israel and Hamas, according to two people familiar with the matter. One day after the segment aired, CBS News installed a longtime producer, Susan Zirinsky, as an interim executive editor overseeing journalistic standards and practices.

The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that Paramount executives were discussing a possible settlement internally. If the company reaches such a deal, it would be at least the third major company in recent weeks to settle a lawsuit brought by Mr. Trump.

Last month, ABC News paid $15 million to resolve Mr. Trump’s defamation lawsuit against the network and its anchor George Stephanopoulos, who had imprecisely said that the president had been found “liable for rape” in a civil trial in New York. (In fact, Mr. Trump had been found liable for sexual abuse.)

And on Wednesday, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said it had agreed to a $25 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit that Mr. Trump filed after the social networks suspended his accounts in 2021.

Here’s the deal pitched by Reuter that would send Fedde to the Braves:

Atlanta Braves receive: RHP Erick Fedde

St. Louis Cardinals receive: RHP Bryce Elder

“Right-hander Erick Fedde returned from a wildly successful stint in the KBO last season on a two-year, $15 million deal with the Chicago White Sox, and he pitched well enough to be an in-demand trade chip, eventually landing in St. Louis on his way to posting a 3.30 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 154 strikeouts in 177.1 innings,” Reuter wrote. “With a team-friendly $7.5 million salary, he is a logical target for any team looking to add a quality arm to the middle of the rotation.

“The Atlanta Braves could opt to rely on some combination of Grant Holmes, Ian Anderson, AJ Smith-Shawver, Hurston Waldrep, Bryce Elder, Dylan Dodd, and Davis Daniel to fill the holes in the rotation created by the departures of Max Fried and Charlie Morton.”

The Braves need stability in their starting rotation more than anything. While Fedde is still a bit of a question mark, he’s much more of a sure thing than Elder is.

Elder pitched himself out of Atlanta with his performance in 2024. A career reset with a rebuilding team like the Cardinals would be best for the young righty.

This is the kind of trade that pushes both teams in the direction they’re trying to go.

Doug Burgum, a promoter of oil and gas, was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday to lead the Interior Department, a role in which he will oversee drilling and mining policies on federal lands and waters.

The 79-18 vote for Mr. Burgum puts him in charge of nearly 500 million acres of public land, 1.7 billion acres of offshore waters, and more than 70,000 employees across the country tasked with protecting wildlife and endangered species, managing national parks and maintaining tribal lands.

He is expected to be a key player to implement President Trump’s “drill, baby, drill” agenda that calls for making it easier and cheaper for oil companies to operate, and loosening protections for wildlife as well as easing limits on air and water pollution.

In addition to leading the Interior Department, Mr. Burgum is also to run a White House council charged with encouraging more oil and gas development. The role of the council is still undefined but it is expected to help meet Mr. Trump’s goal of selling more American oil and gas to Europe and Asia.

During the presidential campaign, Mr. Burgum acted as a conduit between Mr. Trump and the oil and gas industry. He helped gather fossil fuel executives at Mar-a-Lago for a now-famous dinner, during which Mr. Trump suggested that industry leaders raise $1 billion for his campaign. He told the executives they would save far more than that in tax breaks and legal fees after he eliminated climate policies, according to several attendees who requested anonymity to discuss the private event.

Mr. Burgum’s role and his close ties to oil billionaires, including Harold Hamm, the founder of oil giant Continental Resources, drew criticism from many Democrats.

In written responses to lawmakers, Mr. Burgum sidestepped a question from Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, about whether he played a role in meetings between oil executives and Mr. Trump during the campaign where both public policy and campaign contributions were discussed. Mr. Burgum wrote that Mr. Trump’s “energy dominance message is consistent regardless of venue.”

Republicans expressed relief that Mr. Burgum would reverse policies of the Biden administration that were designed to reduce drilling and mining while increasing conservation.

Senator Mike Lee, Republican of Utah and chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, accused the Biden administration and former Secretary Deb Haaland of “throttling” fossil fuels.

“Governor Doug Burgum understands what Secretary Haaland apparently forgot, that abundant affordable energy is a fundamental pillar of our national security,” he said.

Several Democrats said Mr. Burgum’s vision for unleashed fossil fuels threatens the nation.

“The Trump administration’s climate and energy policies are not a mystery; it is to exacerbate the climate crisis,” said Senator Brian Schatz, Democrat of Hawaii, who spoke against Mr. Burgum yet voted for him.

Kierán Suckling, executive director at the Center for Biological Diversity, was unsparing in his words for Democrats. “It’s alarming that so many Senate Democrats were duped into voting for an oligarch who is now charged with stewarding the nation’s public lands and wildlife,” he said. “If Democrats want to know why so many people are disillusioned, they need to look no further than this vote.”

A multimillionaire former Microsoft executive who served two terms as governor of North Dakota, Mr. Burgum ran briefly for the White House before dropping out of the race to endorse Mr. Trump and become his adviser on energy issues.

During his confirmation hearing Mr. Burgum said he viewed America’s public lands and waters as part of the country’s financial “balance sheet,” with potentially trillions of dollars worth of oil, gas and minerals waiting to be extracted beneath the surface.

“We have all this debt,” Mr. Burgum said. But “we never talk about the assets,” he said. “It’s our responsibility to get a return for the American people.”

“Not every acre of federal land is a national park or a wilderness area,” Mr. Burgum said, adding, “Some of those areas we have to absolutely protect for their precious stuff, but the rest of it, this is America’s balance sheet.”

Mr. Burgum declared that any curbs on energy production posed a national security threat and endorsed Mr. Trump’s vision of “energy dominance,” a phrase that is shorthand for more fossil fuel production.

He also insisted that the United States was in the midst of an energy crisis, even as it is producing more oil than any nation at any time in history and is the world’s leading exporter of liquefied natural gas.

Mr. Burgum said he would pursue an “all of the above” strategy but also said he would cut incentives for what he called “intermittent” power projects, referring to renewable energy like wind and solar power.

He said there has been too much so-called “intermittent” power built in recent years and not enough baseload, referring to gas or coal that can be stored and burned to produce electricity.

Emissions from the burning of fossil fuels produced on federal lands and waters account for nearly 22 percent of U.S. greenhouse gases.
