Clues emerging from the moments before the deadly collision Wednesday night between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines passenger jet suggest that multiple layers of the country’s aviation safety apparatus failed, according to flight recordings, a preliminary internal report from the Federal Aviation Administration, interviews with current and former air traffic controllers and others briefed on the matter.

The helicopter flew outside its approved flight path. The American Airlines pilots most likely did not see the helicopter close by as they made a turn toward the runway. And the air traffic controller, who was juggling two jobs at the same time, was unable to keep the helicopter and the plane separated.

An F.A.A. spokesman said the agency could not comment on the ongoing investigation, which is being led by the National Transportation Safety Board. Crash investigators will spend the next several months reviewing flight data, recordings from inside the cockpits, weather patterns, as well as interviewing controllers and others involved to try to figure out what went wrong.

But the catastrophe already appeared to confirm what pilots, air traffic controllers and safety experts had been warning for years: Growing holes in the aviation system could lead to the kind of crash that left 67 people dead in the Potomac River in Washington.

Even before an official cause is determined, there were signs Wednesday that pilots and air traffic controllers at Reagan National were not operating under optimal conditions.

The duties of handling air traffic control for helicopters and for planes at Reagan National on Wednesday night were combined before the deadly crash. That left only one person to handle both roles, according to a person briefed on the staffing and the report.

Typically one person handles both helicopter and plane duties after 9:30 p.m., when traffic at Reagan begins to lessen. But the supervisor combined those duties sometime before 9:30, and allowed one air traffic controller to leave, according to the person, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the investigation into the crash. The crash occurred just before 9 p.m.

While there were no unusual factors causing a distraction for controllers that night, staffing was “not normal for the time of day and volume of traffic,” the preliminary F.A.A. report said.

On Thursday, five current and former controllers said that the controller in the tower should have more proactively directed the helicopter and the plane to fly away from each other. Instead, the controller asked the helicopter to steer clear of the plane.

Some of the current and former controllers said the darkness could have made it more difficult for pilots to accurately gauge the distance between themselves and other aircraft. Some wondered whether the helicopter pilots mistook a different plane for the American jet.

The helicopter was supposed to be flying closer to the bank of the Potomac River and lower to the ground as it traversed the busy Reagan National airspace, four people briefed on the incident said.

Before a helicopter can enter any busy commercial airspace, it must get the approval of an air traffic controller. In this case, the pilot asked for permission to use a specific, predetermined route that lets helicopters fly at a low altitude along the bank on the east side of the Potomac, a location that would have let it avoid the American Airlines plane.

The requested route — referred to as Route 4 at Reagan National — followed a specific path known to the air traffic controller and helicopter pilots. The helicopter confirmed visual sight of a regional jet and the air traffic controller instructed the helicopter to follow the route and fly behind the plane.

But the helicopter did not follow the intended route, the people briefed on the matter said.

Rather, it was above 300 feet, when it was supposed to be flying below 200 feet, and it was at least a half-mile off the approved route when it collided with the commercial jet.

A senior Army official urged caution in making any assessments until the helicopter’s black box could be recovered and analyzed, along with other forensic data.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing inquiry, said the Black Hawk’s pilots had flown this route before, and were well aware of the altitude restrictions and tight air corridor they were permitted to fly in near the airport.

Safety lapses in aviation have been increasing for years, leading to an alarming pattern of close calls in the skies and at airports involving commercial airlines. They have occurred amid rising congestion at the country’s busiest airports, including Reagan National, where the frequent presence of military flights makes controlling traffic even more complicated.

At the same time, a chronic shortage of air traffic controllers has forced many to work six-day weeks and 10-hour days — a schedule so fatiguing that multiple federal agencies have warned that it could impede controllers’ abilities to do their jobs properly. Few facilities have enough fully certified air traffic controllers, according to a Times investigation in 2023. Some controllers say little has improved since then.

The air traffic control tower at Reagan National has been understaffed for years. The tower there was nearly a third below targeted staff levels, with 19 fully certified controllers as of September 2023, according to the most recent Air Traffic Controller Workforce Plan, an annual report to Congress that contains target and actual staffing levels. The targets set by the F.A.A. and the controllers’ union call for 30.

An F.A.A. spokesman said on Thursday that Reagan National currently employs 25 certified controllers out of their goal of 28.

The controller who was handling helicopters in the airport’s vicinity Wednesday night was also instructing planes that were landing and departing from its runways. Those jobs are typically assigned to two controllers, rather than one, the internal F.A.A. report said. This increases the workload for the air traffic controller and complicates the job.

Controllers can also use different radio frequencies to communicate with pilots flying planes and pilots flying helicopters. While the controller is communicating with pilots of the helicopter and the jet, the two sets of pilots may not be able to hear each other.

As the passenger jet’s pilots were approaching the airport, they were asked by air traffic control to pivot the landing from one runway to another, according to the F.A.A. report, a person briefed on the incident and audio recordings of conversations between an air traffic controller and the pilots. That request may have introduced another complication shortly before the collision.

The American Airlines flight had originally been cleared by the traffic control tower to land on the airport’s main runway, called Runway 1. The controller then asked the pilot to land on a different, intersecting runway instead — Runway 33 — which the pilot agreed to do.

That decision, according to the person who was briefed on the incident and four other people who are familiar with the airport’s air traffic, happens routinely when regional jets like the American Airlines aircraft are involved. The decision may also have been made to help keep air traffic moving efficiently by not clogging the main runway, the people said.

Runway 33 is shorter, requiring intense focus from pilots landing their planes. The last-minute change raised questions within the F.A.A. on Thursday morning about congestion at Reagan National, the person briefed on the event added.

Robert Isom, American’s chief executive, said at a news conference on Thursday that the pilots of the passenger plane involved in the crash had worked for PSA Airlines, an American subsidiary, for several years, The captain had been employed by the airline for almost six years, while the first officer had worked there for almost two years.

“These were experienced pilots,” he said.

If you are finding today’s Wordle a hard slog, don’t worry; you’re not the only one who has struggled with the puzzle.

“[My partner] and I play it on the couch together each morning,” software engineer Josh Wardle, who created the game, told Newsweek in January 2022. “She will consistently get it in three goes, which is way, way better than I can ever hope to achieve. I normally need at least four or five attempts.”

Wardle perfected Wordle during the COVID-19 lockdowns before releasing it to the public in October 2021. Following its public debut, Wordle exploded from 90 users on November 1, 2021 to 300,000 on January 2, 2022. The New York Times purchased it for an undisclosed seven-figure fee and, soon after, it became the publication’s most popular game.

A large part of Wordle‘s appeal is its simplicity. Players get six attempts to guess a five-letter word. Gray tiles behind each letter indicate that they are not in the word at all; yellow means the letter features but is in the wrong position; while green lets players know the letter is in the word and in the correct place.

Previously speaking to Newsweek, Erhan Aslan, a linguistics expert who teaches at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, provided some tips for Wordle players.

“One thing that I think is important in this game is the starting word chosen. Starting off with words that include commonly used vowels, for example, e and a, consonants such as r and t, and sound sequences might be helpful. Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for instance, may not be the best choice,” Aslan said.

The answer to Friday’s puzzle will be revealed at the end of this article, so scroll down with caution if you want to work it out for yourself.

‘Wordle’ #1,322, Clues for Friday, January 31

Newsweek has put together five hints to help you figure out today’s Wordle puzzle.

Hint #1: Today’s answer contains two vowels.

Hint #2: One letter is repeated twice.

Hint #3: Today’s answer is a noun and a verb.

Hint #4: “T” is the first letter.

Hint #5: When you think of this word, you might think of breakfast.

‘Wordle’ #1,322, Answer for Friday, January 31

Today’s Wordle answer is “Toast.”

According to Merriam-Webster, the noun is defined as “sliced bread browned on both sides by heat,” and the verb is defined as “to make (food, such as bread) crisp, hot, and brown by heat.”

Wordle updates every day at midnight, at which point the next puzzle becomes available. Newsweek will be back with another round of hints and tips for each new game.

Players who would like to keep themselves busy while they wait can have a go at other word-based puzzles such as Typochondria and Spellspire.

The black hawk helicopter involved in a fatal midair collision with a passenger jet near D.C.’s Ronald Reagan National Airport may have been flying off its pre-approved flight path, The New York Times reports.

Newsweek reached out to the Army via email Thursday night for comment.

Why It Matters

The collision was the first fatal commercial crash in the U.S. since 2009, when a propeller plane crashed near Buffalo, New York killing nearly 50 people.

The aviation catastrophe involving an American Airlines (AA) plane and a Sikorsky H-60 military helicopter on Wednesday night sparked a “whole of government” response as local, state, federal and military agencies ascended onto the Potomac River.

Recent airplane incidents and close calls have seemingly sparked questions about safety protocols and in a news conference on Thursday President Donald Trump questioned if Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) may be to blame in part for the crash near Reagan National.

What To Know

In their report, the Times says that the black hawk helicopter may have been flying too high and at least half a mile off its approved path, citing multiple people briefed on the matter.

The helicopter’s pilot asked to fly on a path that closely followed the east side of the Potomac River and was “no higher than 200 feet,” the Times reports. This route, known as route 4, would have put the black hawk out of the AA’s flight path.

However, the helicopter was above 300 feet when the collision with the AA plane occurred, and the black hawk allegedly did not follow the approved path, the Times reports citing the people briefed.

The Associated Press also reports that at the time of the collision, there was one air traffic controller coordinating both helicopter traffic and arriving and departing planes, citing a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) report.

The FAA report says this staffing “configuration was not normal for the time of day and volume of traffic,” the AP says.

The Times also notes that a senior Army official advises using caution in making assessments until the plane’s black box is analyzed along with forensic data.

What People Are Saying

President Trump on Truth Social after the crash on Wednesday night: “The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn. Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!”

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth in a news conference on Thursday in part: “The military does dangerous things; it does routine things on the regular basis. Tragically last night, a mistake was made. I think the president is right, there was some sort of an elevation issue that we have immediately begun investigating at the DOD (Department of Defense) and Army level. Army CID (Criminal Investigation Division) is on the ground investigating, top tier aviation assets inside the DOD are investigating sir to get to the bottom of it so that it does not happen again because it is absolutely unacceptable.”

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy on X on Thursday night: “This is not what I expected on my first day on the job to be, but I do believe that God puts us exactly where we’re supposed to be. Tonight, I met with some of the families who lost their loved ones in the plane and helicopter crash last night. Their pain is immeasurable. I can’t take away their pain, but I can do a very small part to help ease it by keeping my promise to get to the bottom of what happened and be 100% transparent about the results of the investigation. They have my word.

My heart and the heart of the nation are with them tonight and in the difficult days ahead. May God bless them all. I am in the process of developing an initial plan to fix the @FAANews. I hope to put it out very shortly. Tomorrow, I am going to the FAA command center and recovery hangar. I will continue to keep the families and the public up-to-date with what we are doing in this situation and every other situation that falls under @USDOT.

@POTUS is the most transparent president in my lifetime. I intend to reflect that spirit during this investigation and in all my work at @USDOT. Good night for now….tomorrow we get back to work!”

Pete Buttigieg, former Transportation Secretary under former President Joe Biden, on X: “Despicable. As families grieve, Trump should be leading, not lying. We put safety first, drove down close calls, grew Air Traffic Control, and had zero commercial airline crash fatalities out of millions of flights on our watch.

President Trump now oversees the military and the FAA. One of his first acts was to fire and suspend some of the key personnel who helped keep our skies safe. Time for the President to show actual leadership and explain what he will do to prevent this from happening again.”

What Happens Next

Multiple agencies along with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) remain on scene as recovery continues along with the beginning stages of the investigation.

For travel tips, recipes and more insight on Italian culture, sign up for CNN’s Unlocking Italy newsletter. This eight-part guide will have you packing your bags in no time.

Not all publicity is good publicity. Especially when it leads to 10,000 daytrippers invading a ski resort, chaotic scenes on the slopes, extreme traffic snarl-ups, accusations of bad behavior and emergency crowd control measures.

That’s what happened at Roccaraso, one of Italy’s most popular skiing destinations, on Sunday after viral influencer posts on social media about bumper snowfalls prompted tour companies in the coastal city of Naples to organize cheap tour buses for bored residents to enjoy an outing in the mountains.

Cue the invasion, with 220 tour buses making the two-hour, 130-kilometer (78-mile) trip, alongside cars full of curious day visitors, blocking the resort’s narrow roads and angering its 1,500 local residents.

The tour groups — who paid $20 for the trip, including a sandwich — are accused of causing mayhem on the slopes by ignoring ski etiquette or sliding down on improvised sleds made from, among other items, saucepans.

There were also complaints after some visitors were seen in social media videos lighting barbecues for warmth or to cook food. Others were accused of leaving trash.

Sunday’s events prompted municipalities around Roccaraso, located in central Italy’s Abruzzo region, to introduce crowd-control measures, including limiting tour bus access to the area.

Local media credit — or blame — Rita De Crescenzo, a popular influencer from Naples, who has posted a series of videos on TikTok and other social media platforms in recent weeks inviting people to experience the snow.

Capitalizing on the popularity of her posts, several budget tour companies and organizers then started offering the deals, some even quoting her.

‘The crowd went crazy’

De Cresenzo responded in a colorful post Wednesday, saying it wasn’t her fault that buses had blocked the roads. “I made such a beautiful advertisement for Roccaraso where I was on Monday and Tuesday and the crowd went crazy because I put up wonderful videos,” she said in the post.

Roccaraso’s mayor, Francesco di Donato, told CNN that the unauthorized tour buses were “a real assault” on the area, which made the situation “hellish” for many, especially those who have homes around the resort or who have season passes.

He said that on a normal two-day winter weekend, the area normally saw about 20,000 skiers and a further 15,000 who sled and trek. The 10,000 additional tourists on Sunday alone created a security risk for the whole area.

Concerned about reports from tourism bodies that twice the number of day trip deals have been booked for this coming Sunday, February 2, he has summoned the prefecture of the regional capital L’Aquila to ensure proper traffic police and security forces.

Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a Green Party politician from Naples, posted a lengthy Facebook video in which he scolded the day-trippers and tour organizers.

“Go to Roccaraso for 15 euros without a receipt? Throw your garbage in the snow? What are we talking about?” he said. “People who have passes and follow the rules were made to wait three hours in their cars for these people who didn’t have permission or passes to be there. Not in my name as a Neapolitan.”

Some of the day-trippers shot back on social media, accusing the locals of discrimination because they are from Naples. Roccaraso’s mayor denied their city of origin had anything to do with objections.

“Roccaraso welcomes and wants to welcome more and more tourists, but civil and correct skiers,” he said. “The Roccaraso system is unable to contain the assault of those who come only on Sundays. We cannot put a thousand chemical bathrooms in a ski resort.

“I am on the street, these people do not have patience, they get nervous, they don’t give a damn about the machines that come. Sooner or later you risk the accident. I say it firmly: they have to face this phenomenon as if it were a soccer match.”

Projecting where the slugger will land is harder now than it’s ever been. While the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners, and incumbent New York Mets are all in the race, nobody has landed the star first baseman.

“How about long-shot Reds as a Pete landing spot? Could the Reds pursue Pete Alonso? It’s probably a long shot, but with Alonso’s market not developing as expected, the word is Cincinnati may consider it,” Heyman wrote. “It’s unusual for a star free agent to go from baseball’s biggest market to its smallest (tied with Milwaukee). But Cincinnati, with its smallish ballpark, might be a nice spot for Alonso to re-establish value on a deal with early opt-outs.”

This idea is quite the longshot, as Heyman notes.

The Reds don’t typically spend the kind of money it would take to bring in Alonso, especially on a shorter-term deal. Cincinnati has already been rather aggressive this winter by bringing back Nick Martinez and signing Austin Hays. Adding a deal with Alonso for nearly $30 million a year would be quite the step up in spending.

From Alonso’s point of view, it could make sense. Playing in Great American Ballpark would almost guarantee he slugs nearly 50 home runs in 2025. If he can land a three-year deal with opt-outs after year one and year two, this would make a lot of sense for the Polar Bear.

In this scenario, the best case for Alonso is slugging 50 home runs in year one, opting out of the deal with the Reds, and landing a mega contract elsewhere next offseason.

Loretta Ford, who co-founded the first academic program for nurse practitioners in 1965, then spent decades transforming the field of nursing into an area of serious clinical practice, education and research, died on Jan. 22 at her home in Wildwood, Fla. She was 104.

Her daughter, Valerie Monrad, confirmed the death.

Today there are more than 350,000 nurse practitioners in America; it is one of the fastest growing fields, and last year U.S. News and World Report ranked it the top job in the country, a reflection of salary potential, job satisfaction and career opportunities.

That success is in large part the result of a single person, Dr. Ford, who in 1965 co-founded the first graduate program for nurse practitioners, at the University of Colorado, and subsequently mapped the outlines of what the field entailed.

At the time, nurses were important figures in the medical field, providing not just administrative support but also vital services where and when doctors were unavailable. But the training and career framework for nurses was almost completely absent.

“In nurses’ training, the focus is too much on teaching and administration,” Dr. Ford said in a speech at Duke University in 1970. “We want to make the nurse into a clinician.”

She went further in 1972, when she was hired as the first dean of the school of nursing at the University of Rochester. There she implemented the “unification” model of nursing, in which education, practice and research are fully integrated.

“It gives the profession the ability to study itself with the research, and have nurse-practitioner researchers conducting that work while educating the future work force,” Stephen A. Ferrara, the president of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, said in an interview.

Dr. Ford’s work in the 1970s often faced resistance from doctors, who scoffed at the idea of nurses wielding influence within the medical field and, perhaps, threatening their dominance of it.

“We actually got hate letters in the mail,” Eileen Sullivan-Marx, who studied under Dr. Ford at Rochester and is now the dean emerita of the school of nursing at New York University, said in an interview.

But Dr. Ford and others pushed on, establishing state-level licensing protocols, standardizing curriculums and adjusting insurance programs to allow nurse practitioners to have a substantive, and often independent, role within the health care system.

And she emphasized that nurse practitioners were not there to replace doctors but to complement them — to do the frontline work in hospitals, but also to be out in the community, focused on health and prevention at a grass-roots level.

“It was obvious to me,” she told Healthy Women magazine in 2022, “that we needed advanced skills and an expanded knowledge base to make the decisions. Because it happens in a hospital. Who do they think makes decisions at 3 a.m.?”

Loretta Cecelia Pfingstel was born on Dec. 28, 1920, in the Bronx and raised in Passaic, N.J. Her father, Joseph, was a lithographer, and her mother, Nellie (Williams) Pfingstel, oversaw the home.

Her fiancé was killed in combat in 1942, inspiring her to join the U.S. Army Air Forces, intending to be a flight nurse. But her poor eyesight disqualified her from flying, and by the end of the war she was based at a hospital in Denver.

Dr. Ford’s work took her into rural parts of Colorado, where doctors were few, poor families were many and the need for basic preventive medical care was acute. She found herself playing many roles under the title “nurse” — she was part public health official, part counselor, part all-around clinician.

At the same time, the Kennedy and Johnson administrations were bringing a new sense of urgency to the issues of rural public health and supporting innovation across all medical fields.

Working alongside Henry Silver, a pediatrician at Colorado, Dr. Ford created a graduate program for nurses, though at first it was in the form of continuing education, without a degree. But the kernel of her vision was already there: that nurses should be sufficiently trained to make independent decisions, have their own practices and participate in health care as part of a team.

“Complete independence for any health practitioner today is a myth,” she said at Duke. “It could be downright poor practice.”

By the time she retired from Rochester, in 1986, there were thousands of licensed nurse practitioners, and many doctors had come to accept them as colleagues, not supporting players.

A small business owner’s decision to withhold a Michelin-starred restaurant‘s laundry over unpaid invoices has struck a chord with online readers, with many supporting his direct action.

The owner, who runs a pickup and delivery laundry service in a major city, explained on Reddit this week that they had a contract with a two-star Michelin restaurant, handling their tablecloths and napkins.

Despite offering competitive rates, the restaurant’s finance manager, identified as “M,” routinely attempted to renegotiate prices after services were completed.

Decisive Move

While the logistics manager, “A,” appreciated the company‘s reliability, M continuously withheld payments, pressuring the laundry business to accept lower amounts.

After months of delayed payments, the restaurant owed the business $1,700—money the owner could not afford to lose.

Frustrated with ongoing disputes, he and his business partner made a decisive move: They withheld the restaurant’s clean and pressed laundry until full payment was made.

“I told A that M could stuff it,” original poster (OP) Altruistic-Slide-512 declared.

“We have all your laundry—it’s all pressed and ready. It’s Monday. You’re planning to open again on Tuesday.

“When you pay us in full for this order and everything that you owe us for previous orders IN CASH, you’ll get your laundry back.”

Rather than fight the demand, A took the matter to the restaurant’s other owners, who swiftly agreed to pay. The head chef, rather than M, met with the laundry service and handed over a check, which successfully cleared.

Although A later proposed continuing the business relationship under better terms, the OP declined, relieved to move on from the ordeal.

‘Good for you!’

Many Reddit users praised the owner’s strategy, pointing out that small businesses are often put in impossible situations when large clients refuse to pay on time.

One user commented, “If they can charge $400 a plate, they can pay their invoices. Good for you!”

Another added, “People love to squeeze the little guy because they think they can get away with it. You made the right call.”

The situation reflects broader concerns faced by small business owners, particularly regarding unpaid invoices.

According to Business News Daily, cash flow issues are one of the leading reasons small businesses struggle or fail. Late payments from clients can create huge financial strain, forcing owners to make tough decisions about how to recover lost funds.

Newsweek has reported that small businesses often hesitate to take strong measures against larger clients due to fear of losing future work. However, experts argue that small businesses should take a firmer stance, just as larger corporations would.

“You have to protect your bottom line,” a financial expert told Newsweek.

“If a client doesn’t pay, they’re not really a client.”

While some might argue that holding a customer’s property until payment is received is extreme, many small business owners see it as a necessary action when dealing with repeated non-payment.

‘No plan B’

The laundry service owner expressed, “No regrets!”, about his approach, emphasizing that businesses relying on essential services should respect the work that keeps them running.

“Don’t try to stiff a small business that stands between you and setting tables for $20,000 worth of seatings in your fancy restaurant when you have no plan B,” the OP summed up.

“In the first quarter of 2025… overall earnings improvement may be limited due to weakness in the semiconductors business,” it said.

Samsung has been seen as struggling to meet Nvidia’s requirements.

Its technology leadership “in the semiconductor market has been eroded over the last few years”, Gloria Tsuen, a Moody’s Ratings vice-president and senior credit officer, told AFP.

“The rapidly increasing demand for AI chips also heightens the technological difficulty in developing new, custom-made chips for customers in a timely manner,” she added.

Neil Shah of Counterpoint Research said the company’s “conservative” moves to focus on costs relative to more challenging customer demands have been “key factors for the headwinds”.

“Samsung lost first wave of semiconductor AI boom cycle to rivals SK hynix with HBM in AI servers and now is being challenged by Micron for DRAM in AI smartphones and PCs, especially in its own latest Galaxy S25 series flagships,” he said.

But Bloomberg on Friday reported Samsung has obtained approval to supply a “version of its fifth-generation high-bandwidth memory chips” to Nvidia, citing people familiar with the matter.

China’s startup DeepSeek recently unveiled its R1 chatbot that has apparently shown the ability to match the capacity of US AI pace-setters for a fraction of the investments made by American companies.

The news hammered tech firms Monday, with Nvidia collapsing almost 17 per cent and wiping almost US$600 billion from its market capitalisation – a record single-day loss for a publicly traded company.

Tuesday saw a tech rebound, with Nvidia surging 8.8 per cent, but DeepSeek’s arrival has still raised questions about whether the vast sums invested in AI in the past few years have been overdone.

“While Samsung faces fundamental technology headwinds, DeepSeek’s claims have challenged the fundamental economics and investments for ongoing AI waves,” Counterpoint’s Shah said.
