SAMSUNG Electronics said on Friday its operating profits surged 129.85 per cent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2024, but fell from the previous quarter as it struggled to meet demand for chips used in artificial intelligence servers.

The company is the flagship subsidiary of South Korean giant Samsung Group, by far the largest of the family-controlled conglomerates that dominate Asia’s fourth-largest economy.

The announcement comes after the world’s largest memory-chip maker acknowledged in October it was facing a “crisis” and that questions had arisen about its “fundamental technological competitiveness and the future of the company”.

Operating profit from the October to December period was 6.5 trillion won (S$6.1 billion), up from 2.82 trillion won a year earlier, Samsung said in a regulatory filing.

Sales rose 11.8 per cent to 75.78 trillion won, while net income of 7.75 trillion won was up 22.2 per cent from a year earlier.

Net profit exceeded market expectations, according to the Yonhap News Agency, which cited its own financial data firm.

Samsung said Friday this was due to “soft market conditions especially for IT products, and an increase in expenditures including R&D.”

“In the first quarter of 2025… overall earnings improvement may be limited due to weakness in the semiconductors business,” it said.

US tech giant Nvidia, whose semiconductors power the AI industry, has been relying on SK hynix, Samsung’s South Korean rival, as its main supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips for its artificial intelligence graphics processing units (GPUs).

Samsung has been seen as struggling to meet Nvidia’s requirements.

Its technology leadership “in the semiconductor market has been eroded over the last few years”, Gloria Tsuen, a Moody’s Ratings vice-president and senior credit officer, told AFP.

“The rapidly increasing demand for AI chips also heightens the technological difficulty in developing new, custom-made chips for customers in a timely manner,” she added.

Neil Shah of Counterpoint Research said the company’s “conservative” moves to focus on costs relative to more challenging customer demands have been “key factors for the headwinds”.

“Samsung lost first wave of semiconductor AI boom cycle to rivals SK hynix with HBM in AI servers and now is being challenged by Micron for DRAM in AI smartphones and PCs, especially in its own latest Galaxy S25 series flagships,” he said.

But Bloomberg on Friday reported Samsung has obtained approval to supply a “version of its fifth-generation high-bandwidth memory chips” to Nvidia, citing people familiar with the matter.

Blessing in disguise?

China’s startup DeepSeek recently unveiled its R1 chatbot that has apparently shown the ability to match the capacity of US AI pace-setters for a fraction of the investments made by American companies.

The Chinese startup has said it used less-advanced H800 chips – permitted for export to China until late 2023 – to power its large learning model.

The news hammered tech firms Monday, with Nvidia collapsing almost 17 per cent and wiping almost US$600 billion from its market capitalisation – a record single-day loss for a publicly traded company.

Tuesday saw a tech rebound, with Nvidia surging 8.8 per cent, but DeepSeek’s arrival has still raised questions about whether the vast sums invested in AI in the past few years have been overdone.

“While Samsung faces fundamental technology headwinds, DeepSeek’s claims have challenged the fundamental economics and investments for ongoing AI waves,” Counterpoint’s Shah said.

“This ‘frugal innovation’ could potentially slow down or stretch the hundreds of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure investments over the years,” he said.

“So, this could be a ‘blessing in disguise’ for Samsung, allowing them to take the time needed to perfect their solution or to lower costs,” he added.

Shares in Samsung were down 2.42 per cent in early trade in Seoul. AFP

“The Red Sox have already added two starters in Crochet and Buehler, both of whom have ace upside. Yet they may still be open to adding an arm, and they were notably linked to Dylan Cease in December,” Rymer wrote. “The Cease connection came out prior to the Crochet trade, though. And while Boston does have a ton of surplus hitting talent, the best way to leverage it would be in a trade for an impact pitcher who is young and controllable. King is neither.”

While Rymer notes that the Red Sox should pursue a young and controllable pitcher, King, though he doesn’t fit this criteria, could still make quite a bit of sense.

First of all, the righty is extremely talented. He found his footing among the top right-handed pitchers in the game down the stretch last season. Fitting King into the Red Sox’s rotation next to Garrett Crochet would be quite easy.

Boston also has the money to re-sign him when he hits free agency. Spotrac projects King to be worth $71 million over four years when he hits free agency, which is a number the Red Sox could easily give him.

When Donald J. Trump sued CBS for $10 billion days before the 2024 election, accusing the company of deceptively editing a “60 Minutes” interview with Vice President Kamala Harris, many legal experts dismissed the litigation as a far-fetched attempt to punish an out-of-favor news outlet.

Now Mr. Trump is back in the White House, and many executives at CBS’s parent company, Paramount, believe that settling the lawsuit would increase the odds that the Trump administration does not block or delay their planned multibillion-dollar merger with another company, according to several people with knowledge of the matter.

Settlement discussions between representatives of Paramount and Mr. Trump are now underway, according to three people with knowledge of the talks. There is no assurance, though, that they will result in a deal, and it is unclear what the terms of any such deal might include.

Shari Redstone, Paramount’s controlling shareholder, strongly supports the effort to settle, according to two people with knowledge of her thinking. Ms. Redstone stands to clear billions of dollars on the sale of Paramount, the media empire founded by her father Sumner Redstone, in a deal with Skydance, an entertainment company backed by the billionaire Larry Ellison and run by his son David.

A settlement would be an extraordinary concession by a major U.S. media company to a sitting president, especially in a case in which there is no evidence that the network got facts wrong or damaged the plaintiff’s reputation.

It could also cause an uproar within CBS News and among the “60 Minutes” staff. Journalists at the network have expressed deep concern about the notion of their parent company settling litigation that they consider tantamount to a politician’s standard-issue gripes about a news organization’s editorial judgment, according to several people familiar with internal discussions.

Edward Paltzik, Mr. Trump’s lawyer on the case, wrote in a statement on Thursday: “Real accountability for CBS and Paramount will ensure that the president is compensated for the harm done to him, and will deter the Fake News from further distorting the facts to advance a partisan agenda. President Trump looks forward to seeing this case through to a just conclusion.”

During the “60 Minutes” interview at the center of the lawsuit, which aired in October, the CBS correspondent Bill Whitaker asked Ms. Harris a question about the conflict in the Middle East.

In a preview of the interview that aired on “Face the Nation,” CBS’s Sunday morning show, Ms. Harris was shown giving a different answer than the one she gave in the version of the interview that was broadcast the next evening on “60 Minutes.”

Mr. Trump’s team accused “60 Minutes” of selecting a more coherent quote from Ms. Harris for the prime-time telecast in order to boost her candidacy. CBS News said that Ms. Harris had given one lengthy answer to Mr. Whitaker’s question, and that the network followed standard journalistic practice by airing a different portion of her answer in prime-time because of time constraints.

“The interview was not doctored,” CBS News said in a statement in October, adding that it “did not hide any part of” Ms. Harris’s answer. At the time, the network described Mr. Trump’s lawsuit as “completely without merit.”

Mr. Trump’s legal complaint relied on a largely untested interpretation of a Texas law that prohibits deceptive trade practices in things like marketing products to consumers. Among other objections to the lawsuit, CBS lawyers have noted that Mr. Trump’s standing to bring the suit in Texas was tenuous at best.

Regardless of the lawsuit’s merit, Mr. Trump’s administration wields leverage. Because Paramount owns broadcasting licenses, it needs the blessing of the Federal Communications Commission to complete its planned merger with Skydance.

People inside Paramount have been expecting the F.C.C., which is now led by a Trump appointee, Brendan Carr, to request that CBS News hand over an unedited transcript of its interview with Ms. Harris, according to people with knowledge of the plans. CBS had refused previous requests from Mr. Trump’s lawyers to release the transcript.

Mr. Carr has said that the commission would probably look into the “60 Minutes” interview as part of its review of the Paramount merger.

Mr. Trump’s demonization of the news media is a centerpiece of his political rise, and he has repeatedly clashed with “60 Minutes,” which is the country’s most popular television news show. He declined to be interviewed by the program during last year’s presidential race. In 2020, Mr. Trump cut short an interview with Lesley Stahl after becoming irritated with her questions; his campaign then posted unfiltered footage from the interview online.

In recent months, “60 Minutes” has also faced scrutiny from Ms. Redstone herself, who complained to CBS executives about a story featuring State Department employees who expressed misgivings about the Biden administration’s handling of the war between Israel and Hamas, according to two people familiar with the matter. One day after the segment aired, CBS News installed a longtime producer, Susan Zirinsky, as an interim executive editor overseeing journalistic standards and practices.

The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that Paramount executives were discussing a possible settlement internally. If the company reaches such a deal, it would be at least the third major company in recent weeks to settle a lawsuit brought by Mr. Trump.

Last month, ABC News paid $15 million to resolve Mr. Trump’s defamation lawsuit against the network and its anchor George Stephanopoulos, who had imprecisely said that the president had been found “liable for rape” in a civil trial in New York. (In fact, Mr. Trump had been found liable for sexual abuse.)

And on Wednesday, Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said it had agreed to a $25 million settlement to resolve a lawsuit that Mr. Trump filed after the social networks suspended his accounts in 2021.

An incredulous passenger is calling out airplane seat-swappers after their refusal apparently led to a backlash from other travelers and a flight attendant.

The clap back, described by original poster (OP) JazzyJayKarr, provoked mixed reactions from Reddit users this week, although several had their own tense exchanges to share.

The OP said they boarded the plane only to find someone already sitting in their assigned window seat. When they pointed it out, the man checked his ticket and realized he was supposed to be seated in a middle seat toward the front.

Spanish Remarks Understood

Before moving, he asked the OP if they would like to switch. They declined, having specifically chosen and paid extra for their window seat.

Other passengers sitting nearby began speaking in Spanish, assuming the OP didn’t understand. According to the post, they made comments such as, “I wouldn’t mind a middle seat,” implying that refusing the switch was unreasonable.

The situation escalated when another dispute over seating broke out nearby.

Some, “10 minutes later, another dude gets mad at someone for taking people’s seats trying to get a window view,” the OP wrote.

Shortly after, a flight attendant approached and asked if they were traveling alone. When the user confirmed, they were asked if they would be willing to switch seats so a young girl could sit with her parents.

Again, they refused.

‘Happens way too often’

“I’m already situated, I’m not moving, and I paid extra to be able to choose my seat,” they responded.

The flight attendant reacted negatively, claiming they were being rude and giving her “lip” for not answering nicely.

Frustrated, the OP turned to Reddit to vent, asking, “What is wrong with these people? Just sit where you are supposed to sit. Holy cow.

“This happens way too often and it’s so stupid.”

The issue of seat-swapping on flights is hotly debated by travelers.

A similar incident covered by Newsweek featured a passenger who was asked to move for a family, only to be relocated to a much worse seat.

Another case, also reported by Newsweek, involved a traveler who voluntarily switched seats to accommodate a family, only to be placed in an undesirable location as well.

Switch-Seat Strategy

A frequent flyer shared their strategy of only agreeing to switch seats if they are guaranteed a comparable one.

“As a taller guy, I always try to get a plus seat and the aisle. It’s not much, but it helps to keep my knees from hitting the seat in front of me, or people reclining from hitting my knees,” the flyer noted.

“Middle seats and window seats are a nightmare. That said, I have only switched once to allow a really young child to sit next to her parents.”

Mixed Reactions

Many Reddit users backed the OP’s decision to keep their seat, arguing that assigned seating should be respected. However, others felt that refusing to move for a child was unfair, even if the request was inconvenient.

An individual appreciated the frustration of paying for an upgraded seat only to be pressured into giving it up: “You paid extra for that seat. You don’t owe anyone an explanation for wanting to sit in it,” they wrote.

Others argued that while families should plan ahead and book seats together, there are situations where accommodating a child is reasonable.

However, they emphasized that passengers should never be forced or guilt-tripped into moving, particularly when they have paid for their seat selection.

Any Incentive?

In the thread, the OP admitted they thought about asking if there was an incentive available to switch seats, but they decided to just refuse.

“I don’t really know what they could have actually offered me to make the change,” the OP added.

The latest round of exchanges of hostages from the Gaza Strip for Palestinian prisoners was carried out with Israel on Thursday.

Buses carrying Palestinian prisoners released under the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian militant organization Hamas left Israel’s Ofer Prison in the West Bank on Thursday afternoon after a delay.

Many of those freed have reportedly arrived in the West Bank. In Ramallah, 66 Palestinians were received by their relatives, Palestinian media reported.

Israel was expected to release 110 jailed Palestinians in total in exchange for the handover earlier on the day of eight hostages – three Israelis and five Thais – held by militants in the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.

The released Palestinian prisoners included at least 30 convicted murderers, as well as some women and minors.

While some of them were to be taken to the Gaza Strip, several others are to be sent abroad under the agreement because of the severity of their crimes.

All the released hostages meanwhile were handed over to the Israeli army and first brought to a meeting with their parents on Israeli territory. They were subsequently flown by helicopter to hospital.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had paused the release of the Palestinian prisoners after disorder broke out at one of the hostage handovers in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis.

Broadcasters showed Arbel Yehud, a 29-year-old woman, and Gadi Moses, an 80-year-old man, struggling to make their way through the densely-packed crowd of chanting people and to the waiting Red Cross vehicles.

“I view with utmost severity the shocking scenes during the release of our hostages,” Netanyahu said in a statement as he paused the reciprocal release of the Palestinians.

A short time later he announced that he had received assurances about the safety of the hostage handovers going forward, paving the way for the release of the Palestinians.

This marks the third round of releases since an initial six-week truce between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza went into effect on January 19.

Israeli soldier Agam Berger, 20, was the first to be handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Her transfer took place amid the ruins of the Jabalia urban refugee camp in northern Gaza.

Berger, likely acting under duress, waved to a crowd from a stage she was placed on. Berger’s family in Israel watched the ceremony on television and reacted with enthusiastic cheers to seeing her.

A crowed of people also celebrated and waved Israeli flags at what has become known as “Hostage Square” in Tel Aviv.

Hours later, Israeli authorities confirmed that five Thai nationals and two German-Israelis, Yehud and Moses, were released. Both of the German-Israelis are civilians.

These seven were released to aid workers in the southern Gaza Strip city of Khan Younis.

Threatening scenes during hostage release

Broadcaster Al Jazeera showed chaotic scenes of Yehud and Moses struggling to make their way through the densely-packed crowed of shouting people and to the waiting ICRC vehicles.

Many Palestinians attempted to photograph the woman with their mobile phones. Masked and armed militants accompanied and protected them. A fighter held the hand of the woman, who appeared frightened.

The handover “ceremony” took place next to the destroyed house of Hamas leader Yehya al-Sinwar, who had led the militant group in Gaza until he was killed by Israeli forces in October.

“This is further evidence of the unimaginable cruelty of the terrorist organization Hamas,” Netanyahu said, according to his office.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog spoke of “scenes of abuse and terror.” Nevertheless, he said the return of all eight hostages from captivity brought tears to his eyes.

German leaders reacted with relief to the release. “Arbel Yehud and Gadi Moses are free, both German-Israeli citizens,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz wrote on the platform X. “We are relieved and glad for all the hostages who returned today.”

A similar sentiment was expressed by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.

Yehud was abducted from her house in the Nir Oz kibbutz on October 7, 2023, along with her boyfriend. The woman’s brother, who also lived in Nir Oz, was killed during the attack.

Before their release, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad militant group released a video of Yehud smiling and embracing Moses.

Moses was also abducted from Nir Oz. His partner was killed in the massacre.

Palestinian prisoners include more than 30 lifers

Of the 110 Palestinian prisoners who were to be exchanged for the three Israeli hostages, more than 30 had been sentenced to life imprisonment.

They included Zakaria Zubeidi, who during the Second Palestinian Intifada was a commander of the military wing of the Fatah movement in Jenin, in the northern West Bank.

During the period between 2000 and 2005, around 3,500 Palestinians were killed, with more than 1,000 Israelis losing their lives in attacks by Palestinians.

The Times of Israel reported that Zubeidi received a hero’s welcome as he arrived in the West Bank on Thursday.

According to media reports, Mahmoud Atallah, who is serving a life sentence plus 15 years for the murder of a Palestinian woman accused of collaborating with Israel, was also to be released.

No Palestinian prisoners were to be released for the five Thai hostages. Israeli media reported they were freed under a separate agreement between Hamas and Thailand.

Militants from Hamas and other extremist groups killed around 1,200 people and abducted more than 250 Israelis as hostages to the Gaza Strip during their assault on Israel in October 2023.

The attack was the trigger for the war in the besieged coastal area, where, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority, more than 47,400 people have been killed since. The figures do not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

Ceasefire and exchange of hostages and prisoners

The ceasefire agreement, which came into effect on January 19, states that in an initial phase, 33 hostages are to be released in exchange for 1,904 Palestinian prisoners over six weeks: Seven hostages were freed in the past two weekends.

Hamas recently announced that eight of the 33 hostages were dead, without specifying which hostages these were.

The fate of a mother and her two small children, who were also abducted to the Gaza Strip and were to be released in the first phase, remains uncertain.
