Seen as a leading candidate to win the race on Oct 4, Takaichi stands out for her vocal opposition to the BOJ’s rate hikes and her calls to ramp up spending to reflate the economy.

The prospect of her becoming Japan’s next prime minister has led some market players to buy yen and Japanese government bonds on the view it could discourage the BOJ from hiking rates.

But Shimoda, who has experience serving at the BOJ’s monetary affairs department, expects the outcome of the leadership race, including a possible victory by Takaichi, to have a limited impact on monetary policy.

“While she could advocate bigger fiscal spending, I doubt Takaichi can pursue policies that could weaken the yen,” Shimoda told Reuters in an interview.

A weak yen gives exports a boost, but it has been a source of concern for policymakers because it lifts import costs and has been a factor in inflation staying well above the BOJ’s 2 per cent target.

The BOJ exited its massive, decade-long stimulus last year and raised short-term rates to 0.5 per cent in January on the view Japan was on the cusp of durably achieving its 2 per cent inflation target.

With inflation staying above 2 per cent for well over three years, the BOJ has signalled its readiness to keep hiking rates.

Its exit from ultra-loose policy and a hike in rates to 0.25 per cent last year came at a time when the yen’s plunge to near two-decade lows drew political calls for higher rates.

The Helsinki Intl. Film Festival – Love & Anarchy kicks off its 38th edition Thursday with change in the air, with long-time artistic director and festival co-founder Pekka Lanerva announcing this week that he’s stepping down from the operational side of the popular Finnish event, and incoming executive director Pauliina Ståhlberg preparing to oversee her first edition since assuming the post last fall.

Speaking to Variety ahead of opening night, Ståhlberg says that the transition — which will see festival veteran Outi Rehn take on the role of head of programming — doesn’t represent a “big shift” from previous editions, so much as the arrival of “a new generation and a new way of collaborative working.”

“Change is always an opportunity to do things in a different, more modern way,” she says, noting how the creation of a new four-person programming team allows for “more different voices and more different ways of seeing the world.”

The festival opens Sept. 18 with Joachim Trier’s Cannes prizewinner “Sentimental Value” and closes Sept. 28 with Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or-winning “It Was Just an Accident.” Highlights include Mascha Schilinski’s Cannes sensation “Sound of Falling,” Oliver Laxe’s “Sirât” — a Jury Prize winner on the Croisette — and Hafsia Herzi’s Queer Palm winner “The Little Sister.”

Also screening will be Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague” and Joshua Oppenheimer’s post-apocalyptic musical “The End,” starring Tilda Swinton, as well as Icelandic director Hlynur Pálmason’s “The Love That Remains,” anchoring the popular Nordic Gems sidebar.

Alongside such festival favorites are several provocative programming strands looking to highlight hot-button issues of the day. Among them are the Fight the Power series, which showcases films of rebellion, and the Free Palestine series, which festival organizers say “shines a light on things that can no longer go unseen.” It includes Sepideh Farsi’s heartrending documentary “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk,” about 25-year-old Gaza photojournalist Fatma Hassona, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike, and Areeb Zuaiter’s DOC NYC prizewinner “Yalla Parkour.”

Ståhlberg points to such programming choices as evidence of the “huge responsibility” her team feels in curating a selection of films for Helsinki audiences, and proof of how the festival — and filmmakers as a whole — “can be on the side of the good guys.”

“We actually can make the world a better place through film, and through Love & Anarchy, by choosing what films we show at our festival to raise voices from Palestine and other [places]…to broaden people’s horizons and have other voices heard,” she says.

Like many members of the Finnish film community, Ståhlberg has a long-running love affair with the Helsinki Intl. Film Festival, and in her first year she’s already determined to expand its reach.

“I’ve been going to the festival since I was at [university],” she says. “The Love and Anarchy festival is the highlight of autumn in Helsinki for the 60,000 people who come and watch our screenings. I want to bring in more of the younger generation as well, and also open it up to the suburbs of Helsinki,” where many members of the city’s immigrant communities have little access to cinema.

The goal, she says, is to make the festival “more accessible to everyone,” which is why Ståhlberg also hopes to expand the popular Pulpettikino educational program. The initiative offers free screenings to thousands of Helsinki schoolchildren during the festival each year, with Ståhlberg saying she’d like to double its scope to reach up to 20,000 children in the coming years.

Ståhlberg, who assumed the role of executive director after serving for four years as the director of the Finnish Institute in Madrid, brings to the position a long and highly regarded career in the cultural sector. She’s served as the director of the Finnish Institute in the U.K. and Ireland and built a laudable resume as a producer and journalist, most notably at the Finnish Broadcasting Company. She is perhaps best known for producing the Nordic Noir crime series “Deadwind,” which was a global hit on Netflix.

She takes over at a time of growing unease in the Finnish screen industries, which have faced mounting cutbacks in recent years from the country’s rightwing government. Next week Parliament will vote on a measure to drastically reduce funding to the Finnish Film Foundation, with Ståhlberg estimating that such cuts could halve film and television production in the country. She herself plans to appear before the government to voice her support for the cultural sector.

“We have to fight the power, which is one of our themes at Love & Anarchy,” Ståhlberg says. “Like everywhere, money to culture and to different voices is being cut. With the rise of the ultra-conservatives all across the world — or at least in Western democracies — it’s frightening, and we really have to do something about it together.”

That spirit of collaboration remains the driving force behind Finnish Film Affair, the annual industry event running parallel to the Helsinki festival, which takes place Sept. 24 – 26. Under the stewardship of incoming industry head Lydia Taylerson, the event features a loaded line-up of talks, workshops and masterclasses, as well as a showcase presenting 45 new projects from Finland, the Nordics and further afield. Among them are works of fiction, documentary and series from both emerging and established filmmakers.

Ståhlberg points to the event, which is one of the leading industry confabs in the Nordics, as a sign of how filmmakers from the region remain committed to collaboration — both with neighboring countries and beyond — while proving there’s strength in numbers for their small-scale industries.

“I think co-production and co-funding are key right now for our industry,” she says. “The Nordics and the Baltics, we’re so small. We need to work together.”

The Helsinki Intl. Film Festival – Love & Anarchy runs Sept. 18 – 28.

In the two decades since he’s been running the company, Linda Farrow the woman has been a guiding light for the brand and remains a strong pillar of its design identity.

“When we first restarted the brand, it was about reestablishing the brand on its own two feet and thinking about what the product was. Sometimes I felt that we didn’t lean into our heritage and our storytelling, which is a fantastic story. I feel like now’s a great time to really remind people who we are, where we’ve come from and how great our history and heritage is as a company,” Jablon said in an interview with his mother by his side.

“Who else could be the face of our Iconic collection other than my mother?”

In the campaign images, Farrow poses elegantly with a selection of oversize sunglasses and her hand by her chin, cheeks or clutching her arm as she looks away from the camera in a cream jacket. She’s nothing short of glamorous with her gold accessories and stern glare that has hints of Miranda Priestly, the larger-than-life character played by Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada.”

Farrow is a proud mother, more than anything.

Jablon has carried on his mother’s innovative spirit.

In the ‘70s and ‘80s, Farrow collaborated with the likes of Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Pucci on sunglasses, when the category was still relevantly small and brands didn’t have licensing partnerships.

Jablon has continued that tradition with collaborations with Dries Van Noten, Jacquemus and The Attico.

“In those days, it was drastically new and everything was much the same all the time. I remember when I was in Italy and I was looking at all these beautiful colored glasses and materials, but people kept saying you’ll never sell these colors because in the U.K. it was just tortoise shells everywhere,” Farrow recalled.

The eyewear industry has transformed into a multibillion-dollar business and it’s far from the one that Farrow remembers from her heyday.

“At one time, London was really the hot spot for everything and people used to come over from Europe and all around the world. They would buy on the spot. In that time, we all got to know each other and things weren’t moving so fast. The buyers, shops [and press] had always been there,” she said.

Jablon has been reintroducing the human touch back into the brand with his business strategy. He’s no longer taking small meetings in between fashion weeks, but rather scheduling sit down dinners with important clients or buyers; hosting cocktail receptions at the store, and working with local social media influencers for different markets.

Last year the Linda Farrow brand introduced Black Series, a 26-piece men’s eyewear line that predominantly targeted men in order to hone its relationship with the male demographic.

It’s clear that Jablon has inherited his mother’s strong work ethic and adrenaline for trying out new things.

“[I made sure] a work ethic was passed down to my children because they were always in and around everything that was going on as young children and it became a part of their lives. My biggest thing to them was, ‘Always have reserves because markets and life always go up and down, but have reserves so that you survive,’” Farrow said.

Her advice has been priceless to Jablon and running the business.

He added that when he relaunched the company and asked for his mother’s critique, she said to him, “It’s not for me to critique your work. Artists don’t critique other artists. You do what’s in your heart and if it’s what you really believe in, then people will be drawn to that passion.”

In 2024, the accessories company reported it was growing at a rate of more than 80 percent year-on-year since the pandemic and was on course to maintain that growth rate.

The women’s category makes up 70 percent of sales, while men’s has been steadily growing year-on-year over the past five years and makes up 30 percent of the brand’s sales.

Cameron Cade has only one mission in life: to be the best player in American football. Nothing else matters to this college sports star (played by Tyriq Withers, a statue-like figure genre fans may recognize from “I Know What You Did Last Summer”), who’s on his way to the Combine, where pro teams scout up-and-coming players. Cam doesn’t just want to be drafted. He wants to be the GOAT. Right now, that title belongs to Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans), but the eight-time championship winner’s contract is up, and he’s looking for someone worthy enough to fill his shoes. “I’m Him!” young Cam shouts in a show of self-confidence.

But there can only be one GOAT, and “Him” looks long and hard at what it costs to succeed in one of America’s most beloved institutions. If the studio’s sinister (yet sexy) marketing makes it seem like a film for sports fans, think again. Director Justin Tipping (handpicked by producer Jordan Peele on the strength of his 2016 debut, “Kicks”) has an ultra-critical view of football, which is presented here as an ancient, quasi-occult practice turned toxic commodity — one that channels the public’s aggression into an almost theatrical form of staged combat, wherein casualties (or crippling concussions) come with the turf.

Tipping embraces the self-indulgent label of “elevated horror,” crafting a tense, trippy, ultra-stylized movie that’s so surreal at times, it might feel like you’re watching an extension of Matthew Barney’s “Cremaster Cycle.” Then again, there’s likely not a lot of overlap between that rarefied art project — No. 1 featured Busby Berkeley-like formations on a football field — and the populist audience Tipping and Peele are targeting here (Barney drilled even deeper into the sport with last year’s “Secondary” show). Perhaps a discomfiting recent body horror movie like “The Substance” gives a better idea of what to expect.

Heightened by sleek digital cinematography and a tense electronic score, “Him” ditches the sports-movie focus on competitive matches in favor of twisted mind games, a great many of which have life-and-death consequences. The whole thing comes down to two key players: Cam Cade and Isaiah White, whom the promising young quarterback has idolized for years. Now what if Isaiah invited Cam to train at his place in Texas, messing with the ambitious rookie’s head every step of the way? Like the devil on his shoulder, his agent (Tim Heidecker) is all for it. There is no angel advising him otherwise.

From an early age, Cam has been conditioned to believe that football is the most important thing there is. Make that the third most important: God comes first. Then family. Then football. Cam has his priorities in order, respecting his mother while trying to honor his late father, who instilled in Cam the belief that he could be the best player the sport ever knew. We see Cam’s dad planting the seed of this obsession during a childhood flashback. Cam sits in front of the TV, glued to the game that nearly ended Isaiah’s career.

Though “Him” skips past the grueling hours of conditioning Cam’s dad put his kid through, we know the score: Football parents are just as intense than stage moms. And why? Because having a child who goes pro can set them up for life. For people in Cam’s position, it’s a shortcut to the American dream. When Isaiah invites Cam to come train at his desert compound — which feels like a cross between a Brutalist bunker and a Bond villian’s lair — he’s already been warned by his doctor that another blow to the head could bench him for life.

Some horror movies hide their themes beneath a schlocky slasher surface. Not “Him,” which features any number of truly disconcerting situations — from the mascot that smashes Cam’s skull after practice to the finale in which the team’s owners appear in literal pigskins — but would be difficult to read in a strictly literal way. As symbols go, Cam appears shirtless or naked half the time, which means he comes off as both a well-sculpted character and a specimen to be objectified. He’s been brainwashed by someone else’s ideas of what it means to be a man. Just how much can we trust the perceptions of someone with a head injury? So much of what our protagonist experiences is distorted through levels of paranoia, hallucination or physical impossibility.

People die in this movie, and nobody seems to care, which could be a metaphor for the way the pro sports industry grinds up and disposes of its warriors. The blow Cam sustains early on inevitably causes us to think of concussions, a liability of the sport with far-ranging consequences. And Cam is no quitter, driven instead by his father’s words: “That’s what real men do, make sacrifices.” Of the many questions “Him” asks audiences, it’s this one, from Isaiah, that resonates with Cam: “What are you willing to sacrifice?”

We’ve already seen Isaiah’s injury, a gnarly fracture where his shin snapped and ripped through the skin. Best brace yourself for such visuals in a film that gets off on flashing X-rays, UV scans and CG renderings of the damage football does to the human body. Isaiah must have made some kind of Faustian bargain to keep playing, we assume, and “Him” slowly builds to the reveal of what that entails.

Will Cam accept the same pact, or is he not committed enough (which in this case would mean going home in a body bag)? He comes across as naive every time he complains of short cuts and cheating in a sport where everybody’s doing something shady to get ahead, from injections (so many needles!) to elaborate blood transfusions (the movie is drenched in the stuff). But Cam plays by the rules, which effectively makes him — in a wink to another Wayans movie — the last boy scout. Amid the thrills, “Him” gets you thinking about the sport and all that it demands, potentially making monsters of our heroes in the process. But as the saying goes: Don’t hate the player, hate the game.

The Finnish film industry has been lamenting proposed government cuts of 7 million euros ($8.26 million), set to come into effect on Jan. 1, 2026.

“If this cut really is 7 million and if it is aimed at our production support, the amount of films we can support will be halved. This means only a few documentaries and shorts, and less than 10 feature films,” Finnish Film Foundation CEO Lasse Saarinen told Variety.

Saarinen has been voicing similar concerns for years – but the latest development still took him aback.

“We’ve been fearing more cuts on top of the 3 million we’ve lost during the 2020s, but this came as a total surprise. This shows how twisted our system is. Our Ministry of Finance is to blame, as well as its continuing urge to minimize the cultural budget of Finland,” he said, arguing the idea was brought up at a late stage during the government’s budget negotiations.

“They also hid their aim to destroy the Finnish film industry by calling this cut a ‘business subsidy’ of the Ministry of Education and Culture. Politicians didn’t understand what they were deciding on.”

The famously laconic nation flooded social media with numerous statements, led by some of the country’s best-known directors.

According to Zaida Bergroth – behind the award-winning “Tove” and upcoming Marianne Faithfull biopic “Faithfull” starring Freya Allan – “Everybody is on alert.”

“We’re trying our best to make the government see this is not the way to go. It makes no sense, not even economically. I very much hope this is not an ideological cut.”

Since 2023, following the defeat of former Prime Minister Sanna Marin and her center-left government, Finland has been witnessing a shift to the right.

“I’m of course worried for my own sake and my colleagues’ sake, but I’m most concerned about the young filmmakers. If fewer films are produced, the pressure to create box-office hits increases, and fewer risks will be taken. This hits the upcoming filmmakers the worst,” said Bergroth.

“I would predict we’ll turn our gaze to our past and try to produce only the so-called ‘safe bets’ and the more surprising and inventive films will be left out of the equation.”

While “mass unemployment in the industry” would be a given, Finns will find it harder to compete with other Nordic countries.

“We already work with a significantly smaller budget than our Nordic peers, and Finnish filmmakers have still managed to create big hits for the Finnish audience and achieve international successes. I’m amazed that the government would even consider such a drastic cut. Our own culture is our lifeline; it should be valued and protected.”

As pointed out by Jussi Award-winning screenwriter Pekko Pesonen, behind the hit franchise “Lapland Odyssey,” blockbuster films would take a beating as well – not just low-budget arthouse.

“I have written several films aimed at a large Finnish audience. None of them would have been made without the support of the FFF. In recent years, filmmaking has become very difficult due to rising costs and constant cuts: no one knows which film will be a hit. But it is certain that hit films are not created without a professional film industry.”

Teemu Nikki, director of box-office smash and this year’s Oscar submission “100 Litres of Gold” – his “Euthanizer” was vying for an Oscar back in 2018 – summed it up succinctly: “At the moment, the funding situation in Finland is shit.”

Jani Pösö, producing for It’s Alive Films, went one step further: “It really is double-shit. When it comes to financing, we’re known for making films in a pretty untraditional way. But still, without the FFF, at least 80% of our films wouldn’t exist.”

Dome Karukoski, known for “Tolkien” and set to spotlight upcoming “Hippo Love” during industry event Finnish Film Affair, stated: “This is an idiotic move by the cabinet. Only a moron would cut the funding of an industry that actually brings revenue into the government’s pocket. Our ruling parties show, again, that they do not understand the value of culture for a nation.”

“This cut might strike our film community down when it’s already bleeding on the ground, [reeling from] the force of previous cuts that hit our national broadcasting company YLE. We will protest and try to overturn these cuts, but unfortunately, I’m not too hopeful about it.”

The FFF – and the industry, actively campaigning since the announcement in September – remains adamant it’s not the end of the story.

“We’ll fight until our parliament decides about next year’s budget in December. I’m rather hopeful this cut could be at least greatly reduced, and that once politicians understand it would mean that the whole culture sector loses one third of its state basic funding, they’ll change this decision,” stated Saarinen. But he remains cautious, as the worst-case scenario would inevitably lead to the closing of cinemas, unemployment and bankruptcy of several production companies.

Variety has reached out to the Ministry of Education and Culture for comment.

SF Studios and Nordisk Film stressed they have reached out to Finnish lawmakers “to share their vision: strong support for film is not only a cultural choice, but also an economic and social investment in Finland’s future.”

SF Studios CEO Iréne Lindblad said: “Cutting film funding would be a severe blow to Finland’s culture and film industry. Film creates jobs, strengthens the economy, and brings people together across the country. At a time when our Nordic neighbors are reinforcing their commitment to local film, Finland risks moving in the opposite direction.”

“We urge the government to reconsider this decision and safeguard the investments that enable Finnish stories to reach audiences both at home and abroad.”

In the FFF’s official take regarding the situation, shared with Variety, it was argued that the decision “cannot be justified as supporting economic growth” as “every euro granted through the foundation returns to the state treasury, at best, doubled.”

While the number of domestic premieres could collapse to “about half of the current level,” domestic content – “among the most popular forms of culture in Finland” – would suffer. “The domestic audience share of Finnish films has long been among the highest in Europe. Why is all this being dismantled?”

In a statement published by local publication Helsingin Sanomat, featuring several recognizable voices, veteran director Aki Kaurismäki posed another question: “What do we do with an independent Finnish state if it has no intellectual activity, social security, or culture?”

Karukoski added: “I really weep for the younger generation of filmmakers who are trying to build their voice in this hostile environment. I urge them to seek asylum in film-loving Denmark and Ireland. The ones that stay here in Finland will most likely have to focus on rally driving and ski jumping.”

Matt Reeves is sharing some new details about “The Batman Part II.”

In a red carpet interview with Josh Horowitz, Reeves said the highly anticipated sequel will focus more on the character of Bruce Wayne since “the first is so focused on Batman.” Reeves pointed out that in previous films, the origin story is often the meat of Wayne’s background, but with “The Batman Part II,” fans will see the man behind the mask in new ways.

“[In] a lot of the other films, which I love, once you get past the origin tale, which we didn’t quite do, but we did something that referred to his origins, then you start telling the Rogues Gallery story and that character’s sort of arch,” Reeves said. “But I never wanted to lose [Robert Pattinson] at the center of these stories, and so that is really what we set our aim on.”

The “Cloverfield” director explained that the sequel’s new angle was a crucial consideration when selecting the villain. He teased that the antagonist for “The Batman Part II” has “never really been done in a movie before.”

Reeves and the entire DC camp have kept details about “The Batman Part II” highly secretive. The writer-director recently told Variety that he keeps the script in a “secret pouch” to protect the film from leaks.

“We put [the script] into a secret pouch that literally has a lock on it with a code,” he said. “[Pattinson] was in New York at the time, and everything is high security.”

“The Batman Part II” is set to begin filming in spring 2026 with a projected theatrical release in October 2027.

[BEIJING] Shein Group has begun offering other fashion brands access to its apparel manufacturing network in China as a service, sources familiar with the matter said, as it seeks new revenue streams amid pressure on its retail business from US tariffs.

Other fashion brands can now tap on the fast-fashion retailer’s supply chain, which includes factories that can turn around new designs in five to seven days, as long as they open a store on its online marketplace, said the sources, who asked not to be identified as they are not authorised to speak publicly.

Shein began formally recruiting brands to join the initiative in the past two months, following nearly two years of preparation and testing, the sources said. Around 20 brands, including French fashion label Pimkie and Filipino designer Jian Lasala’s brand, are currently using the service being promoted through a new website launched in August, they said.

Besides manufacturing, the sources said that Shein also offers sample development, warehousing, sales, and order fulfilment to the brands, services that smaller brands usually cannot access at the low costs that the Chinese giant enjoys.

By turning vendor relationships into a product, Shein is seeking to build a new growth pillar as its self-branded sales of US$2.46 shirts and US$6.75 dresses face limited upside following the US’ removal of tax exemptions for small parcels from China. Although stronger than rival PDD Holdings’ Temu platform, Shein’s US sales have followed an uneven trajectory, according to data from Bloomberg Second Measure.

In response to queries from Bloomberg News, a Shein spokesperson said that its new programme is called Xcelerator, and is aimed at helping brands “overcome value-chain challenges by offering direct-to-consumer services, on-demand production, and global sales access to scale their creativity worldwide”.

The initiative, primarily aimed at attracting more fashion brands to join its marketplace, is an effort to leverage its extensive apparel supply chain network in southern China amid growing competition and a volatile trade environment.

Shein’s China-based manufacturing network is harder to copy and may potentially contribute to sustainable growth in the longer term if they sell the services to industry peers, the sources said.

The privately-held clothing retailer, originally founded in mainland China and now headquartered in Singapore, does not disclose its financial information. Bloomberg News earlier reported that its net income rose to over US$400 million and revenue was almost US$10 billion in the first quarter as consumers snapped up the retailer’s products ahead of US tariffs.

While it’s unclear how Shein fared in the April to June quarter, a period that saw US President Donald Trump end the de minimis tariff exemption, sales there recovered in June, but the recovery has since lost momentum, with numbers dipping again in recent weeks.

In addition to mounting external operational challenges, Shein has faced significant hurdles in its push for an initial public offering. Its original plan to list in the US was shelved amid scrutiny over supply chain and labour practices. The company later explored a UK listing before settling on Hong Kong, where it has confidentially submitted a draft prospectus. It is weighing a move back to China to smooth its path to a share sale in Hong Kong, Bloomberg News reported last month. BLOOMBERG

She’s introducing handbags, presenting more ready-to-wear looks and amping up wholesale and direct-to-consumer operations.

“I want to remain unique, but I have always had very big dreams for myself. I am commercializing in a Dilara way and keeping my couture and arty pieces, but I want to connect to more people and I want to see everybody look like a Dilara person,” said Findikoglu during an interview in her studio.

“What I bring to the table is conceptual and intellectually sexy clothing, which I can’t find around. I’m basically making clothes that I want to wear. I’m an expressive and outspoken designer, and we will one day have white T-shirts with the Dilara logo on it, but it’s not yet.”

Her signature dark, Gothic looks will be under the spotlight in a spring 2026 show titled “Cage of Innocence.” The show will be staged inside a house that’s meant to replicates an old village house, one not so dissimilar to Marie Antoinette’s countryside retreat, Hameau de la Reine, on the grounds of Versailles.

Findikoglu is also welcoming a new color palette of nudes, pink and white that will offset the darker looks.

She said the idea of white came instinctively, adding that it’s often associated with “virginity, brides or girls in white dresses in the countryside or in villages. But in this collection, the white dress becomes sexy.”

She plans to show off sultry, deconstructed silhouettes, soft ruffled cuffs and sheer fabrics. She’s adorned an antique-looking, cream dress with red cherries made from silicone. She said she liked the idea of a “cute cherry girl.”

The Turkish-born designer is also growing the business, and launching new categories.

Her debut handbag, which will appear on the runway, comes in three styles: leather, python effect and the same fabric she’s using for the couture dresses in the collection. The handbag has a rectangular shape similar to a vintage doctor’s bag, with a compact mirror hanging from a chain on the side.

“If somebody is buying couture from me, I’d also like to make a bag matching their outfit. I don’t design single pieces, I design everything as a full look,” she said.

“Sometimes I feel like a doctor in the studio because my work is so intricate and [detailed]. We definitely do a lot of surgery on the garments. As much as we’re a dark brand, I am very into glamour. I love dressing up. I love makeup and hair,” she added.

With handbags on the way, she’s now setting plans for a cosmetics collection. She also wants to open stores in London, France and Italy.

“My dream is to have a store in Palais Royal and another in Venice because it’s my favorite city in the world. It’s [also] important to have a physical store in London because we have so many bespoke clients at this stage and they just need the Dilara experience,” Findikoglu said.

Findikoglu has weathered many storms since launching her brand in 2016, including sitting out the spring 2024 season to keep her business afloat.

“My biggest learnings have been through being nearly bankrupt a few times, but I never stopped believing in myself, even in the worst of times,” she said.

Her rebellious streak has always seen her to get ahead.

She graduated with a BA Fashion degree from Central Saint Martins in 2015, but was not shortlisted for the annual graduate collection show. In response, Findikoglu staged her own guerrilla fashion show outside the show’s entrance, which certainly generated a lot of headlines.

Findikoglu’s resilience remains intact and so do her goals.

“I want to be a game changer for how women with similar backgrounds to me are seen in the world. I want to create a Dilara empire,” Findikoglu said.

Her Turkish and Muslim upbringing has only been a boon to challenge her belief systems. When she left her home country to study at Central Saint Martins, her brother stopped speaking to her for 10 years. “He thought I was going to become a bad girl in their eyes because a woman shouldn’t be free to go to a different country or even go out to dinner by herself,” she said.

Findikoglu nods to the hardship in the title of her spring 2026 collection.

“I have been trying to heal my ancestral trauma. I have been remembering all of the women from my past who never had freedom and who were put in cages of innocence,” she said.

“I’m still breaking free, and I grew up in an environment where men always had more power and freedom. When I was growing up, I didn’t see one single woman who had a job or ran a business. I always learned power from men and thinking power comes in a masculine way. I’m now coming to peace with my vulnerability and I’m definitely the first person that has had this much freedom within my own family.”

ABC affiliates were informed late Wednesday that “Jimmy Kimmel Live” will be dark on the network at least through Thursday, with future plans for the 11:35 p.m. slot still undetermined.

A memo sent to the owners of ABC’s more than 150 affiliate station partners addressed the explosive situation that erupted Wednesday afternoon when powerful station group Nexstar announced it would preempt Kimmel’s show on the company’s 32 ABC affiliate stations. Sinclair Broadcast Group also quickly confirmed its plans to preempt Kimmel over the hosts remarks related to the MAGA movement and the activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead at a public speaking event in Utah on Sept. 10.

In a memo from the ABC Affiliate Board, a longstanding group that liaises with the network on behalf of station owners, ABC affiliates were informed that the network would program repeat episodes of “Celebrity Family Feud” in the 11:35 p.m. hour slot usually occupied by Kimmel on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Beyond that, “formal guidance from Disney/ABC is forthcoming,” the memo stated. The memo noted that the affiliate board “remains engaged with ABC” on the roiling controversy.

A source close to the situation maintains that the network has not yet made a formal decision about the future of Kimmel’s show. Executives were in direct conversation with the host and his representatives on Wednesday evening as the news broke, sparking a range of reactions from the left and right.

The moves by Nexstar and Sinclair mark a rare example of broadcast TV station owners flexing significant power against the media giants that own the Big Four networks. Affiliate stations around the country, particularly those in big markets, were once enormously powerful as they were a vital link in the network’s distribution around the country. ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox used to pay affiliate stations to carry their programming. But starting in the late 1990s, the economics of TV changed so dramatically that stations started pay “reverse comp” to networks to help them shoulder the burden of costly sports rights deals such as the NFL and Olympics.

Today, the Big Four networks all have numerous cable and streaming options to lean on for distribution of their shows. But the local-national construct of broadcast network TV still has its advantages, even in a social media driven, 24/7 media environment. Nexstar and Sinclair undoubtedly saw the Kimmel flap — which began brewing on social media on Tuesday following the remarks in Kimmel’s Monday night monologue — as a moment to exercise some influence. The door was opened wide earlier in the day by Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr, who threatened to launch another investigation into ABC over what he and others deemed to be offensive comments from Kimmel related to Kirk’s slaying.

Free speech advocates, on the other hand, have decried Carr’s statements in particular as another disturbing example of the chairman wielding the FCC’s regulatory authority as a hammer to harm President Donald Trump’s political and social adversaries. The Kimmel standoff also comes as Nexstar is pushing hard for the FCC to overhaul its existing limits on TV station ownership in order to allow Nexstar to acquire a rival station group, Tegna. Nexstar announced last month its intent to buy Tegna in a $6 billion transaction that would definitely put Nexstar over the ownership limit line, unless the FCC revamps those rules. Broadcasters have lobbied for years to loosen the FCC’s various ownership caps on local broadcast TV and radio stations, arguing that they are anachronistic in an era of digital giants such as Facebook, Amazon and Google.

The speed with which Kimmel’s show was compromised came as a shock to many in Hollywood as well as to broadcast TV veterans.

“Remember September 17 — that’s the day we lost the First Amendment in America,” said a broadcast TV station executive with knowledge of the ABC affiliate memo.
