<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Macau casino operations resume</h2>
ccording to Barron’s, an investment media outlet, on the 26th, Macau Chief Executive Ho Yat Seng announced at a press conference last weekend that tourism to Macau by mainland Chinese could resume as early as November.
On this news, Melco Resorts & Entertainment (ADR) (NAS:MLCO) is trading at around $6.8 on the New York Stock Exchange, up nearly 30% at one point. JP Morgan analyst Joseph Greff said the news was “the first meaningful travel policy or measure to strengthen travel mobility since the outbreak of COVID-19.”

Those losses amounted to just $151.5 million, compared with $210.9 million in 2018, it said in a filing with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Friday.
As a result, group sales actually fell 2.4 percent in 2019. Those sales were $1.56 billion, compared to $1.6 billion a year earlier.
The Group’s 2019 base and diluted loss per share also decreased from 0.0249 to 0.0179 from a year ago.
The profit share of the joint venture and affiliates totaled $9.7 million in 2019, compared to $13.5 million in 2018. The decline was “mainly due to the small contribution of Travelers International Hotel Group,” primarily due to the lack of non-operating profit that was recognized in fiscal 2018. Genting Hong Kong is an investor in Travelers International, which operates the resort’s World Manila casino resort in the Philippine capital.
Genting Hong Kong directors did not recommend a final dividend declaration for the year ended Dec. 31.
The group’s 2019 earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) came to $142.5 million, double the $72.3 million it achieved in 2018 and improved “mainly on the back of improved cruise revenue and high utilization of shipyards” operating in Germany.
EBITDA for 2019 for “cruise and cruise-related activities” was just US$6.8 million.
In terms of revenue, the cruise business earned $1.04 billion in ticket sales and just under $346.5 million in “onboard revenue.”
Group sales in the second half of the year rose 1.2% to $832 million, compared with $822 million in the same period in 2018, “mainly due to a slight increase in cruise sales.”
Revenue from the cruise business in the second half of the year rose 3.4% to $731 million, compared with $777 million in the second half of 2018. The company said the increase was mainly due to “price improvements.”
Cruise EBITDA improved from $107.5 million in the second half of 2019 to $89.4 million in the second half of 2018.
However, the group warned about the impact of COVID-19 infections related to the novel coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
“Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the group cancelled many voyages, temporarily suspended nearly all cruise operations in the first quarter of 2020, and suspended all three shipyards at MV Verften,” Genting Hong Kong said.
In mid-March, the company said its top executives had “100% waived fees and compensation from February 2020 to the end of this year” as part of cost-cutting measures due to the global crisis and its impact on tourism.

Australian-listed casino operator Donaco International confirmed in a filing on Tuesday that its casino at Star Vegas Resort and Club in Poipet, Cambodia, (pictured) will be closed “temporarily” under a Cambodian government order that applies to all facilities in Cambodia, which will take effect on Wednesday (April 1) at 11:59 p.m.

“The closure of casino operations will have a significant impact on the business of Donaco Star Vegas Casino,” the company said in a statement to the Australian Stock Exchange.
In terms of finance, the company added, “the focus is on implementing mitigation strategies to minimize the impact on employees and preserve liquidity.”
Cambodia’s government said in an announcement on Monday that shutting down the country’s casino industry was aimed at preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus, which causes COVID-19 infections, in the country.
“At this time, the board is unable to advise on the impact on financial performance due to uncertainties related to the mandatory closure period, but will provide further updates in due course,” Donaco said in a filing on Tuesday
“The company is still in ongoing discussions with Megabank, a major lender,” it added
Donaco said in a filing on Friday that it was seeking consent from Mega International Commercial Bank Ltd to allow Donaco to fulfill part of the settlement agreement it had agreed with Star Vegas’ original Thai supplier.
Donaco announced last week that it was closing “most” of its Star Vegas casino properties.
The company said the border from Thailand to Cambodia via Poipet was closed for 14 days at the time and explained that it was following an announcement by Thai authorities to scale back operations in Star Vegas. It was to control further spread of COVID-19 infections in Thailand.
Donaco also operates the Aristo International Hotel and related casinos in Lao Cai, on the border between Vietnam and China.

Donaco’s flagship location, Star Vegas Resort and Club, is near the border between Cambodia and Thailand. The Aristo International Hotel and related casinos (pictured) are near the border between Vietnam and China. Both buildings have been temporarily suspended due to the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This temporary action follows the announcement by the Cambodian government to mandate the closure of all casinos from April 1, 2020, and the Vietnamese government’s action to temporarily close all casinos for 15 days from April 1, 2020,” Donaco said in a recent filing.
The company said it was introducing a range of measures to reduce costs during the closure “to ensure the sustainability of the company in the future.”
“As a result, Donaco has had to take difficult but inevitable steps regarding its employees, including staff cuts, staff furloughs, casual staff departures and postponement of non-essential spending,” the company told the Australian Stock Exchange.
The company also said it was working to reduce its operations and capital expenditures. As of March 31, 2020, Donaco had a cash balance of US$11.6 million, according to Tuesday’s filing.
“The situation we face with the COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented and unfortunately, we have had to take some drastic steps, including layoffs and pay cuts, with our employees,” the document quoted Donaco Chairman Mel Ashton as saying
Mr Ashton added: “This is ultimately about keeping the business going and eventually rebuilding the team and getting operations back on track, keeping our finances sound.”
The filing also confirmed that Donaco is still in discussions with the group’s main lender, Mega International Commercial Bank, Inc., regarding a settlement of a lawsuit with a supplier of its Star Vegas business. The company also added that it is seeking to amend the June 30, 2020, agreement regarding its term lending facility.
“Donaco continues to consider liquidity measures and capital input sources to ensure its business remains in a sustainable and dynamic position during this period of ongoing global uncertainty,” it said in the filing.
“The duration of the COVID-19 outbreak and the duration of the casino closure will clearly affect the capital input requirements, but … The board is confident that it can raise the capital needed to strengthen its balance sheet and the ability to maintain its business during the long closure period.”

Kangwon Land currently says it will reopen at 6 a.m. on May 4, a date that means the resort has been suspended for nearly two and a half months for its gaming business.

The initial casino closure notice was described by Kangwon Land, the resort’s promoter, as a precautionary measure related to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has had a serious national impact.
Kangwon Land originally announced the temporary closure of the casino from noon on Feb. 23 to 6 a.m. on Feb. 26, but extended the closure six times in a row until April 20.
The company said in a filing on Thursday that it expects casino sales lost since casino shutters began on Feb. 23 to reach 261.1 billion won ($214.1 million), at the time it declared a seventh extension of the closure. The estimate was based on Kangwon Land’s daily casino revenue for all of 2019, the plan’s promoter added.
The company previously announced that it would suspend its non-gaming business from March 2. On Thursday, Kangwon Land said the complex’s non-gaming facilities will gradually open as the country’s COVID-19 disease evolves.
At least two Korean foreigner-only casino operators also announced that they are temporarily suspending their gaming operations in line with South Korea’s efforts to curb the further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grand Korea Leisure Inc. suspended its gaming operations until Apr. 20. Paradise Inc. said Monday that it reopened its casinos on Jeju Island but extended the operations of three other gaming venues until Apr. 20.
As of Thursday, South Korea had recorded a total of 10,613 cases of COVID-19 infection and 229 deaths, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The country reported 22 new cases on Thursday, according to the latest official data.
