The holy place is built to the east of the Puputan Badung square park and is used to worship Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa (the name for the Hindu god). The temple is very easily accessible from any direction due to its strategic location on Mayor Wisnu Street and is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Denpasar City. Jagatnatha Temple is often visited by Hindus, especially during holidays and the full moon (Purnama). Visiting this temple provides a unique experience, as you can see the beauty of the temple in the city center. If you want to pray here, you can wear traditional Balinese clothes and buy offerings at the shops in front of the temple. It is a special experience to see Jagatnatha Temple, located in the center of Denpasar, up close.

 66.
Jagatnatha Temple History

 67.
The construction of Jagatnatha Temple began on February 5th, 1963, with the approval of Anak Agung Bagus Sutedja, who was the governor of Bali at the time. On January 1st, 1965, Anak Agung Bagus Sutedja asked Anak Agung Ketut Anggara of Banjar Belong, Denpasar, to design the drawings of the temple and to lead Bali’s master builders (undagi) to begin construction. However, construction was halted during the events of September 30th, 1965. On July 28th, 1967, construction resumed with the laying of the foundation of the Padmasana building in the form of Bedawang Nala. The construction process was carried out in stages, and on October 15th, 1967, the construction reached the middle stage. Finally, on December 13th, 1967, the entire Padmasana building of Jagatnatha Temple was completed. On February 5th, 1968, the construction of the Candi Bentar was completed. The entire Jagatnatha Temple complex was then inaugurated on May 13th, 1968, which coincided with the full moon day (Purnama). A Melaspas ceremony was held to cleanse and purify the temple. Since then, many residents of Denpasar and also those outside the city have come to pray at Jagatnatha Temple.

 68.
Unique Jagatnatha Temple

 69.
Jagatnatha Temple is built facing west, towards Mount Agung, which is considered the palace of the gods. The courtyard of this temple is quite spacious, in contrast to other temples that follow the Tri Mandala concept with three courtyards, while Jagatnatha Temple only has one courtyard, namely the Padmasana Temple area. The uniqueness of this temple can be seen when entering, especially the Padmasana temple, which is up to 15 meters high. The top of the Padmasana features an image of Acintya, which is a symbol of the embodiment of God. It used to be covered in gold and was stolen around 1981. Besides the Padmasana, there are two temples to the left and right of the Padmasana. On the left, there is a temple of Ratu Niang, and on the right, there is a temple of Dalem Karang. As with other temples, Jagatnatha Temple is also equipped with Bale Kulkul (wooden bell), Pamiyosan, Bali Paselang, Bali Gong, Candi Bentar, and Kori Agung. The most striking uniqueness is the height of Padmasana Temple, the main temple in Jagatnatha Temple, which is made of white natural stone with Balinese carvings in every corner, adding to the beauty of this temple. When visiting this temple, you can take pictures with the Padmasana, which is very Instagrammable.

 82.
Meaning Name of Jagatnatha Temple

 83.
The name Jagatnatha Temple is different from other temples on Bali Island, which generally take names from the location of the temple, such as Besakih Temple, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, Uluwatu Temple, and others. The name Jagatnatha comes from two words, namely “Jagat”, which means “World” or “Universe”, and “Natha” which means “Protection”. Thus, Jagatnatha Temple can be interpreted as “Protection of the World” or “Protection of the Universe.” This shows that this temple serves as a place to ask for protection from the universe, which is the embodiment of Ida Sang Hyang Widi Wasa (God in Balinese Hinduism), to always be given safety and health. Ceremonies at Jagatnatha Temple are similar to those at other temples, but the difference is that Jagatnatha Temple tends to be more universal. This can be seen during the Galungan and Kuningan holidays, where this temple is crowded with Hindus in Denpasar who cannot return home to pray. Jagatnatha Temple is an alternative for those who cannot pray at the temple in their hometowns on holidays. So, many Hindus who live in the city and cannot return home for various reasons will gather at Jagatnatha Temple to pray.

 84.
Jagatnatha Temple Facilities

 85.
Jagatnatha Temple in Denpasar is one of the Denpasar places of interest that offers complete facilities for Hindus and tourists visiting or praying there. A large parking area around the Puputan Badung field makes it easy for visitors. There are also restrooms available for visitor use. In addition, those who want to enter the temple must use a shawl as a requirement to enter the sacred area. For those who wish to pray at Jagatnatha Temple, it is important to bring canang (offerings), which can be purchased at the stall in front of the temple. After visiting the temple, visitors can explore around the Puputan Badung field to see the activities of the Denpasar people who come to rest or exercise. A visit to Jagatnatha Temple provides a spiritual experience as well as entertainment with the holy atmosphere of Hindus and the beauty of Puputan Badung Field. The complete facilities provided at this temple will make visitors feel comfortable and at home during their visit.

 109.
Bali Badung Market is the economic center of the city, located on Gajah Mada Street, which is the main shopping street in Bali. This traditional market is close to one of the three largest temples in Denpasar. As the largest market in Bali, Badung Market serves as a clearinghouse for many of the island’s products. For example, sarong traders in Padangbai can purchase their wares at this market. Fruit and vegetable producers from all over Bali also bring their products to Badung Market, making it busy throughout the day or for 24 hours. You can visit Badung Market anytime, as it is open 24 hours a day. For shopping for basic necessities or souvenirs, it is recommended to come in the morning to afternoon. From afternoon to evening, there is the Senggol market, which offers Balinese street food.

 121.
Inside Badung Market

 122.
Badung Market has undergone changes and adjustments to suit the growth and needs of the city, so its size is not as large as it is today. However, its existence remains inseparable from Kumbasari Market across the Badung River. For locals, the shopping experience is incomplete without a visit to Kumbasari Market, especially to buy ceremonial paraphernalia, which is widely available there. Around the ground-floor area of Badung Market, especially outside the staircase, old Balinese women can often be seen selling traditional Balinese snacks and other products. While not everyone may recognize the exact type of food being sold, it can be an interesting culinary experience at a reasonable cost. On the first floor, you can find meat, fish, fruit, and vegetables, while the upper floors provide spices, traditional Balinese and Muslim clothing, and Balinese ceremonial paraphernalia such as sarongs, umbrellas, and baskets. Although Denpasar has a large Muslim population, the market is also supported by Chinese traders, and Western tourists are sometimes seen here, although it is not an official tourist destination. Badung Market provides plenty of parking, although the entrance on Sulawesi Street can feel crowded. However, parking is also available along the streets surrounding the market. Some people may offer their services as guides, but it’s really not necessary, as exploring the market itself is a valuable cultural and trade experience in Bali.

 123.
History Badung Market

 124.
Badung Market is so named because it is located around the Badung River, which is the largest river in Denpasar and also the longest in Bali, stretching from Mount Batur to Suwung Beach. The history of this market dates back to the Dutch colonial era, when it was called Periuk Market because many pottery artisans from Binoh village, Ubud Bali, sold various kinds of pottery such as panes, gebeh, pots, piggy banks, and caratans there. After independence, Periuk Market was renamed to Badung Market, as we know it today. Badung Market was officially opened on April 24th, 1984, by the Governor of Bali, Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra. The market later suffered a fire and was renovated in 2000 by the then Governor of Bali, Mr. Dewa Made Berata. With an area of approximately 14,544 square meters and a garden of 9,064 square meters, the market has a four-storey building. In addition to the people of Denpasar, visitors to this market also come from outside the city. When approaching holidays such as Galungan, Kuningan, and Nyepi, this market is always crowded with buyers, especially from the local community.

 125.
Kumbasari Market

 126.
Kumbasari Market is undergoing a gradual revitalization process. The market has been around since 1977 and is known as a center for the sale of traditional art products. In the beginning, Kumbasari Market was designed as a traditional souvenir center that reflected the economic history of Denpasar City. In the past, this four-storey building even contained a famous movie theater from the 1980s until the 1990s. It is located next to Badung Market and is separated only by the Badung River, which has now been well organized, giving visitors to Badung Market the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the river while taking pictures, especially for those who love selfies. At Kumbasari Market, there are many vendors selling items for Balinese ceremonial purposes, such as traditional clothing, prayer equipment, and more. However, nowadays, there are also many sellers who offer various art crafts specifically for tourists. You can find a wide variety of trinkets at affordable prices here. If you are visiting Denpasar, Bali Exotic Tour recommends Kumbasari Market as a great place to find souvenirs or unique handicrafts. Many people, after shopping for their daily needs at Badung Market, stop by Kumbasari Market to browse for items that catch their eye. Both markets have unique characteristics because they are only separated by the Badung River and are always crowded with shoppers.

 127.

 128.
Digital Market Badung Market

 129.
Since there were several fires in Badung Market, the market has undergone several renovations. What was originally a traditional building has been transformed into a modern building with a multi-storey design similar to a supermarket. Even so, some transactions still use the traditional bargaining system, while others apply fixed prices. Along with the development of technology, Badung Market now uses barcode and QR code systems for cashless payments, providing convenience for shoppers who want to transact practically. There are also free wifi spots, allowing visitors to connect to the internet to conduct cashless transactions at various shops. Digital scales are also provided to avoid cheating. Badung Market is often regarded as an advanced market as it implements advanced technology that assists customers and merchants in transacting, thus minimizing the hassle when shopping.

 130.
Badung Market Opening Time

 131.
Badung Market operates for 24 hours, with shops opening on a rotating basis, making it a market that is never quiet throughout the day. In the morning, most of the shops open sell a wide variety of clothing and food needs, while in the evening, most of the shops open offer a variety of food in the senggol market. If you are looking for souvenirs, it is advisable to visit in the morning to afternoon, as the shops that provide souvenirs do not open at night. The Badung Market’s operational schedule starts from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., then it is replaced by the afternoon market, which opens from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the next day. At Senggol Kumbasari Market, the operation starts from 2:00 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. The name “Pasar Senggol” is probably taken from the situation where visitors often bump into each other due to the crowds, offering a variety of cheap and festive food from Balinese, Javanese, and Chinese cuisines, as well as clothing for all ages.

 173.
Bali Museum Location

 174.
The Bali Museum is located in the center of Denpasar, amidst the hustle and bustle of social activities typical of the city center, adjacent to Jagatnatha Temple, which is a place of public worship for the Balinese people, and also close to the Puputan Badung Field, which is a favorite recreation area for Denpasar residents. With affordable prices and satisfying services, a trip to the Bali Museum will be a very pleasant experience. This is a rare opportunity to learn about the uniqueness and beauty of tourist destinations in the city of Denpasar.

 175.
Bali Museum History

 176.
On April 28th, 1908, the Kingdom of Klungkung fell to the Dutch colonialists, marking the beginning of Dutch colonial rule in Bali. This event changed the dynamics of government in Bali from being somewhat closed to foreigners to being more open to Europeans, especially the Dutch, during the European colonial period in Indonesia. This led to an increase in foreign visits to Bali, including those who brought Balinese souvenirs back to their countries. This situation threatened Bali’s cultural heritage, so Dutch scientists, culturalists, and artists sought to protect and preserve Bali’s cultural heritage.

 177.
The idea of establishing a Bali Museum was first proposed by architect W.F.J. Kroon (1909-1913), who also served as an assistant resident of southern Bali in Denpasar. In 1910, the idea was realized with the construction of the Arca Building. The construction of the Bali Museum was carried out by architects I Gusti Gede Putu Kandel from Banjar Abasan and I Gusti Ketut Rai from Banjar Belong, together with German architect Curt Grundler, with financial and material support from the Kings of Buleleng, Tabanan, Badung, and Karangasem. In 1930, efforts to complete the ethnographic treasury were continued by the then Chairman of the Antiquities Committee, W.F. Stturterhim. To facilitate the management of the museum, a foundation was formed in the same year, led by H.R. Ha’ak and its members. In 1932, the Bali Museum was opened to the public as a repository of human historical and ethnographic relics, including collections of living tools, art, religion, written language, and others that reflect the life and development of Balinese culture in the past.

 178.
Noble Purpose of Bali Museum

 179.
The main purpose of building the Bali Museum is to maintain and preserve the history and culture of Bali from the past. In this ever-evolving era, the importance of preserving the discoveries and stories of the past is highly emphasized. This is so that future generations of Balinese will still have access to the history and heritage of their ancestors to cherish and learn from. The process of building the Bali Museum began with the realization of the importance of preserving, caring for, and conserving Bali’s cultural heritage. The initiative was born out of concern over the possibility of cultural erosion that could result in the extinction of cultural heritage, leaving only traces in the form of photos. By establishing Bali Museum, efforts to save Bali’s cultural heritage are being taken seriously. This is a very noble goal, because in the midst of advancing times, maintaining identity as a Balinese and preserving ancestral heritage are very important. Bali Island is famous for its local wisdom, customs, and various traditions that need to be preserved as an inseparable part of Indonesia’s cultural heritage.

 254.
Medewi Beach has unique characteristics. Although it is not very wide and tends to be quiet, this beach is a favorite place for surfing lovers because the waves are suitable for this activity. Medewi Beach also has different contours. On one side of the beach, there are pebbles and small stones, while on the other side, there is black sand. Although this black sand is less suitable for sunbathing as the beach is rocky, some hotels around the beach offer swimming pool facilities that can be enjoyed or offer beautiful views from their restaurants. Although it is a long distance away, this beach offers an amazing experience with spectacular views over the West of Bali Island.

 255.
Best Month for Surfing at Medewi Beach

 256.
Medewi Beach is a great surfing destination for surfers. However, every beach has its own season, and the quality of the waves is not always optimal every day. Sometimes the waves can be too small or too big, depending on changes in wind direction and the rainy season, which can reduce the quality of the waves. The best season for surfing at Medewi Beach is during the dry season, as the wind from east to west creates big waves suitable for surfing. In this season, the waves have a strength suitable for surfing. If you plan to visit Medewi Beach, be sure to check the weather forecast first. As the beach is a bit far away, it is important to ensure that the weather conditions are favorable for surfing. Enjoying surfing at Medewi Beach with waves suitable for your surfing style will provide a fantastic experience at this beautiful beach.

According to the decision of the Minister of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia listed in official letter number 493/Kpts-II/1995, the area of West Bali National Park reaches 19,002.89 hectares, consisting of a terrestrial area of 15,587.89 hectares and a water area of 3,415 hectares. This National Park is one of the important conservation areas for flora and fauna on the island of Bali. The main purpose of establishing West Bali National Park is to protect the flora and fauna that face the threat of extinction in Bali. The functions of this National Park include:

 291.

 292.
West Bali National Park serves as a conservation and protection site for the Bali Starling population, which is the symbol of Bali Island and endemic to the island. In addition, the park also aims to preserve other ecosystems, such as coral reefs, mangroves, coastal forest ecosystems, lowland forest ecosystems, and mountains, as an integral part of the life support system. The main goal is to maintain the authenticity, integrity, and natural diversity of these diverse ecosystems in order to optimally support life.

 293.
Preserving the diversity of flora and fauna species, as well as their ecosystems, aims to protect, restore authenticity, develop populations, and maintain genetic diversity within the West Bali National Park area from human disturbance.

 294.
Sustainable use of Living Natural Resources and Ecosystems aims for various purposes, such as:
 295.

 296.
As a field laboratory for researchers to develop science and technology.

 297.
As an education center to improve the knowledge and skills of the community.

 302.
Topographic of West Bali National Park

 303.
West Bali National Park is a green area that stretches along the main road Denpasar – Gilimanuk – Singaraja, with a length of about 150 kilometers. The topography of the park is highly varied, including mountains, hills, valleys, bays, and seas. About 71% of the park’s total area consists of mountains that function as protected forests, providing habitat for a variety of animals such as deer, wild boar, lions, bats, and others. Meanwhile, a flat area of about 29% lies north of the main Gilimanuk – Singaraja road until it reaches the Java Sea. From a conceptual perspective, this area can be considered as a “Giri”, or mountain surrounded by forest (Wanagiri). According to the manuscript of Kidung Utama Tantri, the words “Ning Wana Ukir” indicate that the philosophy of Wana Giri is well illustrated to describe the whole world.

 313.
Flora and Fauna at West Bali National Park

 314.
West Bali National Park has extraordinary potential in terms of flora and fauna, including rare, protected, and abundant species. This area is also known for its stunning natural habitat and geomorphology, as well as its pristine natural beauty. There are potential and complete ecosystems, including marine waters, beaches, coastal areas, lowland forests, and mountains, which provide a natural home for a variety of natural life. High biodiversity is evident in the presence of coral reefs and other marine life, mangrove vegetation, brackish swamp forests, savannas, and monsoon forests. West Bali National Park is also a refuge for around 160 species of protected animals and plants. The potential flora and fauna in it is very diverse, including 14 protected plant species such as Sawo Kecik (Manilkara Kauki) and Sono Keling (Dalbergia Latifolia). In terms of fauna, there is the Born Bali Starling (Leucopsar Rothscildi), which is endemic to Bali Island, and its habitat is still natural in this national park, especially in Prapat Agung and its surroundings. In addition, there are also various animals such as cows, deer, jungle cats, gray monkeys, black monkeys, several types of reptiles, and 60 deer fawns. The park’s coral reefs also exhibit highly variable conditions, with a unique combination of habitats. In 1998, there were 110 coral species, including 22 mushroom corals, and up to now, 222 species of fish have been recorded living in the waters of this national park.

 315.
What to do at West Bali National Park

 316.
West Bali National Park is managed by zones that include the main zone, forest zone, and exploitation zone. The main zone is an area that should be strictly protected and should not be altered by humans except for research purposes. The forest zone serves as a guardian of the main zone and allows activities similar to those in the main zone, including limited tourism activities. The exploitation zone can conduct activities similar to those in the two zones, including the construction of nature tourism facilities and other infrastructure to support conservation efforts. Below are the activities that visitors can enjoy when visiting this national park:

 317.

 318.
Trekking: You can go trekking in West Bali National Park to enjoy its natural beauty. By trekking, you can explore this West Bali conservation area and observe the unspoiled flora and fauna. This is a great option for those who want to experience the existence of rare and endangered forests and enjoy the fresh air in an enchanting forest environment. During the trekking trip, you will see a wide variety of rare plants, endangered Balinese starlings, free-roaming deer, and other animals that are protected due to their endangered habitat.

 319.
Snorkeling or Diving: If you are interested in marine life, you can enjoy snorkeling and diving in one of the best-preserved marine ecosystems in Indonesia. Here, you will find a pristine marine ecosystem and a variety of beautiful marine life. One of the best places to snorkel or dive is on Menjangan Island, which has a unique habitat that cannot be found anywhere else in Bali. As part of the Coral Triangle, Menjangan Island offers a rare and exotic coral landscape, as well as a variety of unusual tropical fish species. It’s clear, calm waters with minimal currents make it well-suited for diving, especially for beginners who want to experience the underwater beauty safely.

 320.

 321.
Menjangan Islands part of West Bali National Park

 322.
West Bali National Park is so vast that it includes the beautiful Menjangan Island. Menjangan Island, located in the north of Bali, can be reached by boat, as it is separated only by the ocean. The name “Menjangan” comes from the local deer population that is often found on the island. These deer migrate to and from Menjangan Island every year. The migration involves traveling 1.2 miles across the sea between Menjangan Island and the Prapat Agung Peninsula through calm waters. The deer’s migration journey is extremely challenging, requiring them to cross the sea with the risk of drowning and bad weather. Although Menjangan Island does not allow camping as there are no lodging facilities on the island, around 16 Hindu monks live in the three temples there. These three temples, along with the mooring port, are the only human-made structures on the island. Menjangan Island offers a very beautiful and natural landscape. If you are in the western region of Bali, it is best to visit one of the Jembrana places of interest, the West Bali National Park, which includes Menjangan Island, and enjoy the natural beauty it has to offer.

 353.
Rambut Siwi Temple is Dang Kahyangan Jagat Temple

 354.
Rambut Siwi Temple is one of the largest and most important temples included in the Dang Kahyangan Jagat temples in Jembrana Regency, Bali. Dang Kahyangan Jagat Temple itself is a sacred place dedicated to honoring holy teachers such as priests, Maha Rsi, and Masters. Rambut Siwi Temple has a close relationship with the sacred journey of Dang Hyang Nirartha, or Dang Hyang Dwijendra, also known as Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rawuh, for his services in spreading the teachings of Hinduism. The main temple is located on top of a cliff by the beach, with the captivating Indian Ocean in the background, creating a natural, calm, peaceful, and spiritual atmosphere. Because of this atmosphere, it is a great choice for meditation or contemplation.

 355.
Sacred Temple and Ceremonial Days

 356.
In the Rambut Siwi Temple area, you will find at least 8 temples, including Pesanggrahan Temple and the temple under the cliff on the beach. The order of worship starts from Pesanggrahan Temple, then Taman Temple, Penataran, Goa Tirta, Melanting, Gading Wani Temple, Ratu Gede Dalem Ped Temple, and the last place of worship is in the area of Luhur Temple, namely Rambut Siwi Temple. The core of Rambut Siwi Temple in Jembrana is Penataran Temple and Luhur (Rambut Siwi) Temple, while the others are part of Penataran Temple. In the main courtyard of Luhur Temple, there are several sacred buildings, such as Padma, Meru overlapping three linggih Ida Betara Pedanda Sakti Wawu Rawuh (Dang Hyang Nirartha), Pengayeng Betara Gunung Agung, Gedong, Meru overlapping two pelinggih Batari Dewa Ayu Ulun Danu, Rambut Sedana, Peselang, Taksu, and several other sacred buildings. Ceremonies held at Rambut Siwi Temple follow the Balinese calendar, which counts one month as 35 days. The ceremony at Rambut Siwi Temple is usually held on Buda Umanis Day, Wuku Prangbakat, and if it coincides with the Full Moon (Purnama) or Tilem, it is called odalan nadi, which is the most important level of odalan.

 357.
History Rambut Siwi Temple

 358.
This is related to the mythology of the arrival of Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha from East Java, or Majapahit, to Bali. According to Mpu Bhaskara Murti of Geria Madu Sudana in Negara city, when Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha arrived in Bali, one of the temples he visited was Rambut Siwi Temple. When entering the temple, the temple guard demanded that Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha pray at the temple. Otherwise, he would be faced by a tiger. Because of this obligation, Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha prayed at the temple. However, the temple was in ruins. Therefore, the temple keeper apologized to Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha and asked for the temple to be restored to its original state. With wisdom, Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha returned the temple to its original state. As a sign of respect, Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha took a strand of his hair and placed it in the temple to be used as a means of worship in the temple. Since then, the temple has been known as Rambut Siwi Temple, or better known as Rambut Siwi in its current popularity.

 359.
When Mpu Dang Hyang Nirartha arrived in Bali, the ruler of Jembrana was I Gusti Ngurah Rangsasa, who was known for practicing the Bairawa teachings. The Bairawa teachings are a branch of the Tantrayana teachings. However, in ancient times, many people misunderstood this Tantrayana teaching. For example, one misunderstanding is to interpret Maituna as free and erotic sex. In fact, the essence of Maituna teachings in the Tantrayana is a yogic attitude to strengthen and enhance the relationship between purusa (male) and pradana (female) in a person. Through this relationship, greater spiritual power can emerge from within, which in turn can express the sanctity of the Atman (individual soul) to achieve Brahman (a higher state of self). In the Mahanirvana Tantra, it is stated that the Tantrayana actually strengthens the power of Guna Sattwam (goodness and tranquility) and Rajas (dynamism and activity). Thus, the teachings of the Tantrayana actually aim to build a physically and mentally healthy identity through increased spiritual awareness and deeper self-control.

 369.
Biggest Temple at Jembrana Regency

 370.
Rambut Siwi Temple is one of the largest of Bali’s Hindu temples and is located in Jembrana Regency in the western part of the island. It is about a 2-hour drive from Denpasar, located in the more remote western region, where the classic Balinese feel is strong with unspoiled tropical forests and small villages scattered along the coast, as well as some larger areas inland. Much of this area is a Balinese conservation park that is home to many of the island’s endemic species that are protected in an effort to preserve the environment. The beachfront Rambut Siwi Temple offers a very photogenic and beautiful view, especially with its main temple sitting on the cliff. Although its history is unknown and little documented, locals believe that this temple was one of the water temples built to protect the land and village from the powerful forces of the sea. Rambut Siwi Temple is the site of various ceremonies and activities in the Balinese Hindu calendar, as well as family events such as birth and wedding ceremonies.

 371.
Rambut Siwi Temple Charm

 372.
Locals also believe that Rambut Siwi Temple is a secret temple that is difficult to find, surrounded by mystery and uncertainty as it is believed to hold many secret objects. This adds to the attraction of Rambut Siwi Temple, making it a magnificent yet simple temple. In addition, the temple is also thought to provide blessings for trips made around this area, as travelers often pass by Rambut Siwi Temple on their long journeys. Although there are several other temples that serve a similar function, many locals choose to stop at Rambut Siwi Temple to ensure the safety of their journey, be it on the way to the north or back to the south of Bali. The scenery around this temple is breathtaking, especially when looking out towards the ocean from the top of the temple or from the beach overlooking the temple and the tropical forest surrounding it.

 373.
Best Place to Visit in West Part Bali

 374.
Visiting the gardens at Rambut Siwi Temple will be a beautiful experience with tropical flowers and well-maintained trees, following the classic traditional Balinese style and being cared for with great care. Rambut Siwi Temple is a quieter alternative to Tanah Lot Temple, which is often crowded and photographed by tourists in Bali. Although it is a longer drive, the calm sensation and natural beauty that emanate make a visit to Rambut Siwi Temple well worth it. The well-maintained garden setting of this temple adds to its aesthetic value and beautiful impression. You will feel freer to enjoy the uniqueness and beauty of Rambut Siwi Temple, as it is not too crowded with visitors. 499.
Mother Temple of Bali

 500.
Besakih Temple is called the mother of Bali’s temples because its complex is very large and spacious and consists of many smaller temples within it. This makes Besakih Temple one of the largest temples and has the largest number of temples in its complex, so it is considered the mother of all temples on the island of Bali. This temple, or what is referred to as the “Mother Temple” in Bali, is located more than 900 meters up the slope of Mount Agung. Besakih Temple has been considered sacred since pre-historic times in Bali, with the first written record dating back to an inscription in 1007 AD. Since the time of the Gelgel dynasty in the 15th century, Besakih Temple has been considered the center of sacred temples throughout Bali. Balinese people from different districts and caste groups gather at Besakih Temple, with a total of 18 separate shrines within the complex. The three main temples in Besakih Temple are: Penataran Agung Temple, dedicated to Sang Hyang Widi Wasa. Kiduling Kreteg Temple, dedicated to Brahma, and Batu Madeg Temple, dedicated to Vishnu. For the Balinese, visiting the sacred temples at Besakih Temple is a special pilgrimage. Each temple has its own anniversary celebrated with odalan festivities, and on the full moon of “Kedasa” in the Balinese calendar, the entire Besakih temple complex celebrates the visit of the gods with an overwhelming crowd of pilgrims.

 501.
Besakih Temple History

 502.
The history of Besakih Temple has several versions that are told, considering that this temple is classified as very old, so it still requires further research. The Besakih Temple complex has many artifacts from the megalithic era, such as menhirs, stone thrones, and stepped terrace structures, which indicate the age of the Besakih Temple is from a very old era, long before Hinduism influenced this area. From the stories circulating and the research available, several versions of Besakih’s history can be presented.

 505.
Besakih Temple History Based on Rsi Markandeya

 506.
The history of Besakih Temple, according to the story of Rsi Markandeya, began in 1284, when a Rsi of Indian descent named Rsi Markandeya (a religious leader) was meditating on the Dieng plateau. At that time, he received a revelation to build the Besakih Temple. Rsi Markandeya then traveled to Bali through the forests of Java. According to the story, he came to Bali through Segara Rupek (Bali Strait) with 8000 followers, heading for Mount Toh Langkir (now Mount Agung). They cleared the forest to open agricultural land, but the mission failed as many of his followers died from various causes such as illness, mysterious events, and wild animal attacks. Rsi Markandeya realized that there was a mysterious force or aura that controlled the island. After returning to Mount Dieng to meditate and ask for further instructions, Rsi Markandeya received a revelation to bring 400 people from the Aga village, the inhabitants of the foot of Mount Raung. Before starting work, they performed ritual ceremonies such as mecaru and planted the five metal elements, or Panca Datu, namely gold, silver, copper, bronze, and iron, accompanied by Mirah Adi (the main gem), to ensure safety in carrying out work in the forest on the slopes of Mount Suci. As a result, there were no more disasters when they encroached on the forest. This may be the basis for the practice of Hindus today, who always perform yadnya ceremonies before clearing new land, whether for houses, rice fields, or gardens, as well as for temples, by planting Panca Datu metal, which symbolizes the five elements.

 507.
After that, Rsi Markandeya distributed land to his followers to be used for rice fields, plantations, and houses. When he was on Mount Toh Langkir (Mount Agung), he realized that Dawa Island (now Bali) was not that big. Therefore, he replaced it with the name Pulau Wali, which comes from the South Indian Palawa language, meaning holy offerings. This is related to the tradition of offerings or holy ceremonies performed by Hindus in temples during prayers.

 508.
After that, the Toh Langkir area developed by him was named Besuki, which later changed to Basuki, meaning safe. The place where Rsi Markandeya performed the offering ceremony and planted the 5 metal elements (Panca Datu) is known as Pura Besakih. Initially only a pelinggih, then developed into a temple called Besukian, and then continued to grow, the construction was carried out in stages to become the largest temple complex now known as Pura Besakih.

 511.
Besakih Temple History Based on Sri Kesari Warmadewa

 512.
The history of Besakih Temple, according to Sri Kesari Warmadewa, records that he was the founder of the Warmadewa dynasty that ruled Bali for several centuries. Sri Kesari Warmadewa is also believed to be the first founder of the temple complex at Besakih. This can be seen from the 914 AD Belanjong pillar (Blanjong Inscription) in the south of Sanur, the Penempahan inscription, and the Malet Gede inscription (835 Saka), which tells us that Sri Kesari was a Buddhist king of the Syailendra dynasty. He led a military expedition and established a dynasty in Bali. These three inscriptions indicate a connection between Bali and the Sanjaya Dynasty in Central Java.

 513.
This is the dates according to the Indian Saka calendar. Another interesting point is that the three inscriptions mostly describe King Sri Kesari’s victories in battle against his enemies. Although the inscriptions are outdated, only two enemies can be identified, namely at Gurun and Suwal, although the exact locations remain unclear. Some scholars suggest that Gurun may be the same as present-day Lombok, while others suggest that Gurun may be the same as Nusa Penida.

 514.
Sri Kesari Warmadewa was famous for his devotion to worshiping the gods that reside on Mount Agung. His place of worship is called Merajan Selonding, or Merajan Kesari Warmadewa. He also expanded the originally modest Penataran Agung Besakih Temple and built various temples in Besakih to complement the pre-existing sacred buildings. These include Gelap Temple to worship Lord Iswara, Kiduling Kreteg Temple for Lord Brahma, Ulun Kulkul Temple for Lord Mahadeva, Batumadeg Temple for Lord Vishnu, Dalem Puri Temple for Goddess Durga, and Basukihan Temple to honor Naga Basukihan. Sri Kesari was also the one who ordered Hindus to celebrate Nyepi on Sasih Kesanga.

 526.
Meaning Name of Besakih

 527.
The name Besakih comes from the word Basuki, which is an ancient form of Sanskrit Wasuki and was later used in Old Javanese. In Sanskrit, Basuki means “safe”. According to Samudramanthana mythology, Basuki is the name of a dragon that circles Mount Mandara. This origin is linked to megalithic traditions that signaled the importance of the place to be sanctified. It seems that Besakih Temple has a very old history, long before the introduction of Hindu influence. Later, an ancient Balinese king named Sri Kesari Warmadewa discovered the Merajan Selonding Temple in the Besakih Temple complex. He also ordered the construction of the Blanjong Monument, located in Sanur Village. The Besakih Temple complex was established with an attention to the balance of the cosmos, which is related to the concept of nature organizing the base of the temple complex according to the direction of the road. As a result, these buildings are considered to represent nature as a symbol of world balance.

 528.
Basukihan Temple at Besakih Temple

 529.
Besakih Temple is not just one temple, but a temple complex consisting of many other temples underneath, making it the largest temple on Bali Island. Among these temples, there is the Panca Dewata Temple that guards the cardinal directions, as well as the main temple known as Basukihan Temple, or better known as Besakih Temple. It is located at the foot of the Penataran Agung Besakih Temple, to the right if we climb the steps of the Penataran Agung Temple. Basukihan Temple has a main pelinggih in the form of meru tumpang pitu (level seven) and is considered the main temple in the Besakih complex. According to sources from the Sulinggih there, Danghyang Markandeya planted Pancadatu Pedagingan (five types of metal with complete rituals) in Basukihan Temple, Penataran Agung Temple, and Dalem Puri Temple, which is considered the mother of Kahyangan. In addition, there are three temples in the surrounding villages, namely Desa Temple, Puseh Temple, and Dalem Temple.

 530.
The state-of-the-art equipment present in each temple, together with religious literature related to temple construction procedures, shows that Basukihan Temple acts as Puseh Jagat temple, Penataran Agung Temple as Desa Jagat temple, and Dalem Puri Temple as Dalem Jagat temple. In this context, Basukihan Temple, Penataran Agung Temple, and Dalem Puri Temple are considered as the centers, while other temples such as Desa Temple, Puseh Temple, and Dalem Temple are scattered around them. Thus, as a whole, Besakih Temple is considered as the temple of Penyungsung Jagat. Hyang Naga Basuki is worshiped in this temple, and Piodalan Day is celebrated on Buda Wage Kelawu or Budha Cemeng Kelawu.

 531.
Panca Dewata Besakih Temple

 532.
Panca Dewata here refers to the gods who reside in each cardinal direction with the aim of protecting the universe from all directions, such as East, South, West, North, and Center, which have their respective roles and functions. Panca Dewata is the manifestation of Lord Shiva, who is responsible for the protection of the cardinal directions throughout the universe, and Penataran Agung Temple is the center point. The following is an explanation of the temples in Besakih Temple that are part of Panca Dewata as the guardian of the cardinal directions in Besakih Temple, which consists of 5 temples with different functions and roles according to the cardinal directions.

 533.

 534.
East: Gelap Temple is located in the east and plays a role in worshiping God in his form as Bhatara Iswara, who is in charge of guarding the eastern direction of the universe, or Bhuwana Agung. Although called ” gelap”, the word does not refer to actual darkness, but rather comes from the ancient Balinese language, the Kawi language, which means lightning or thunder with bright white light. Gelap Temple is a place of worship for God in the form of Dewa Iswara, who is the god of light. Life on earth is possible because of the sun. Sunlight is the main natural resource that gives life to all creatures in nature. Gelap Temple is one of the important elements in the temple complex that guards the eastern cardinal directions.

 535.
South: Kiduling Kreteg Temple is located in the south and serves as a place of worship for God in his manifestation as Bhatara Brahma. This temple is in charge of guarding the southern direction of the universe, and the name Kiduling kreteg is taken from the ancient Balinese language, which means “next to the bridge”, according to its location adjacent to the bridge of Penataran Besakih Temple. One of the purposes of worshiping God as Lord Brahma at Kiduling Kreteg Temple is to guide Hindus to always develop creativity in realizing the teachings of the Vedas in personal and social life, as well as maintaining the spirit of life to always be in the order of Dharma. This is symbolized in Pelinggih Meru Tumpang Sebelas, located in the northeast corner of the Kiduling Kreteg Temple area, often referred to as Ratu Cili’s Palace by the locals.

 536.
West: Ulun Kulkul Temple is located in the west and serves as a place of worship for God, who appears as Hyang Mahadeva, who is in charge of guarding the west, and has a large kulkul, or drum, inside. This temple was founded during the reign of King Sri Kesari Warmadewa, around 835 AD. Originally, this place was the location of Kulkul (Kentongan). Because there is a large kentongan in this temple made of silingui wood, it is believed to be the origin of kulkul in Bali. Based on this belief, every village that makes Kulkul for Kahyangan Tiga temple or a temple recognized by the community, when the release asks for tirta at Ulun Kulkul. In addition, during the reign of King Sri Kesari Warmadewa, Ulun Kulkul Temple was considered as a place to give birth to justice, and officials at that time were appointed in this temple.

 537.
North: Batumadeg Temple is located to the north of Penataran Besakih Temple and is one of the important temples of the Besakih Temple complex. The area of Batumadeg Temple is vast and contains many temples. Based on its structure, the temple is believed to date back to the megalithic era, as evidenced by the presence of a large stone in the Meru temple. The name “Batumadeg” refers to an upright stone in Balinese, which means standing upright, which in an archaeological context is called a menhir. The madeg stone is a symbol of the worship of Bathara Ida Ratu Saktu Watu Madeg, the manifestation of Ida Bhatara Vishnu in the Siwa Pasu Pata worship system. The menhir is placed in Meru Tumpang Solas but cannot be seen directly because it is inside the temple.

 538.
Center: Penataran Besakih Temple, located in the center of the Besakih temple complex, which is the largest and most important of all the temples there. Its function is to worship God in his manifestation as Lord Shiva. Of all the temples in the Besakih temple complex, Penataran Agung Temple is the largest and has the most temple buildings, as well as hosting a wide variety of ceremonies. This temple is considered the center of the entire Besakih temple complex. In the King Purana of Besakih, it is mentioned that the Great Penataran Temple of Besakih is the place of Pesamuaning Batara Kabeh, which shows the importance of this temple in the Hindu tradition in Bali. One of the characteristics of Penataran Agung Temple is the presence of Padma Tiga, which symbolizes the worship of Tri Purusa, namely Lord Shiva, Lord Sada Shiva, and Lord Parama Shiva. In addition, this temple also has a bale pawedaan as a place of worship for the sulinggih, as well as a bale agung, which is where the walaka and sulinggih paruman conduct religious activities.

 540.
Besakih Temple Geographically

 541.
Besakih Temple, which is the largest temple on Bali Island, is built on an area of 20 hectares in Rendang village, Karangasem, Bali. In this area, the Besakih Temple complex has 46 large and small temples. The temples are divided into three parts, namely Penyungsungan Jagat Temple with 20 temples, Kawitan Temple, which contains 17 temples, and Dadya Temple, which has 9 temples. Among all these complexes, Penataran Agung Temple is the center and the largest temple in the area. Penataran Agung Temple has seven levels and is decorated with statues of the three main deities, namely Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. In the Besakih Temple area, you can also see stone-age relics such as stone thrones and menhirs. The architecture of this temple building has a philosophy with oddly stacked roofs, such as 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11, which symbolize prosperity. The temple complex also has several stepped pundens connected by about 800 steps.
