  43. <p>Child labour remains a persistent issue in Developing Countries, depriving millions of children of their fundamental rights, including education, health, and a safe environment. Despite local and international legal frameworks aimed at eradicating child labour, economic hardships, lack of enforcement, and social norms continue to drive children into exploitative working conditions.</p>
  44. <p><strong>A Glimpse into Reality</strong></p>
  45. <p>Yesterday, as I was walking by the road, I saw a 13-year-old boy working on a construction site. The sight was heartbreaking—his small hands carried heavy tools, and his face was drenched in sweat. Instead of being in school, learning, and playing like other children his age, he was engaged in hazardous labour, struggling to earn a living. This is the grim reality faced by millions of children in developing countries. Poverty forces families to push their children into labour, robbing them of their childhood and future opportunities.</p>
  46. <p><strong>Extent of Child Labour in Developing Countries</strong></p>
  47. <p>According to estimates, millions of children in Developing countires are engaged in child labour, working in hazardous industries such as brick kilns, carpet weaving, agriculture, domestic work, and mining. Poverty is the primary factor compelling families to send their children to work instead of school. Additionally, weak law enforcement and lack of awareness contribute to the persistence of child labour.</p>
  48. <p>Despite local laws, enforcement remains weak due to corruption, limited resources, and socio-economic factors.</p>
  49. <p><strong>International Legal Framework</strong></p>
  50. <p>Developing countries are a signatory to several international conventions, including:</p>
  51. <ul>
  52. <li><strong>The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)</strong>: Calls for the protection of children from economic exploitation.</li>
  53. <li><strong>The International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No. 138</strong>: Sets the minimum age for employment.</li>
  54. <li><strong>The ILO Convention No. 182</strong>: Aims to eliminate the worst forms of child labour, including slavery, trafficking, and hazardous work.</li>
  55. </ul>
  56. <p>Despite international commitments, underdeveloped countries struggle to meet these standards due to economic constraints and lack of political will.</p>
  57. <p><strong>Challenges and Solutions</strong></p>

  59. <li><strong>Poverty and Lack of Education</strong>: Many children work to support their families. Government initiatives should focus on poverty reduction and access to quality education.</li>
  60. <li><strong>Weak Law Enforcement</strong>: Strengthening monitoring mechanisms and imposing strict penalties on violators can help curb child labour.</li>
  61. <li><strong>Public Awareness Campaigns</strong>: Raising awareness about the negative impact of child labour can help shift societal attitudes.</li>
  62. <li><strong>Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)</strong>: Businesses must ensure ethical supply chains and avoid exploiting child labour.</li>

  65. <p>Child labour remains a significant challenge in underdeveloped countries despite legal prohibitions and international commitments. The boy I saw on the construction site is just one of many victims of this crisis. A multi-faceted approach involving government intervention, legal enforcement, economic support, and societal change is essential to eradicate this issue. Only through collective efforts can we ensure a brighter future for millions of children trapped in child labour.</p>

IOSH is all about helping you grow in the field of H&amp;S and giving you the tools, support, and recognition you need to succeed.</p>
  84. <p>In this post, we&#8217;ll explain how you can get started with <strong>TechIOSH</strong>—the first milestone in your IOSH membership—and what you need to do to get there.</p>

  217. <p>Many times, health and safety procedures are criticised for being unduly onerous or bureaucratic. Many people question whether regulations like required helmets and regular fire drills are actually necessary or if they are just an overly restrictive way to tick boxes. However, is there more to safety and health than meets the eye?</p>
  218. <p>Fundamentally, the goal of health and safety regulations is to safeguard individuals. These programs play a crucial role in lowering the number of accidents, injuries, and even fatalities that occur in public areas, workplaces, and educational institutions. Take the manufacturing and construction industries, where safety regulations have reduced dangers in high-hazard settings and saved numerous lives over the years. Similarly, public health measures, like vaccination programs and hygiene campaigns, have a profound impact on preventing diseases and fostering healthier communities.</p>
  219. <p>The evidence is self-evident. Prioritising safety has several advantages for businesses, such as a decrease in workplace accidents, cheaper insurance, and happier workers. When implemented properly, health and safety are more than just administrative tasks; they foster trust and establish long-lasting conditions that allow people to flourish.</p>
  220. <p><strong>Is It Overkill or Just for Show?</strong></p>
  221. <p>Some health and safety regulations are criticised for being unduly cautious, onerous, or ineffective. For example, employees and the general public may become irritated by superfluous signage or limitations that don&#8217;t seem required. Sometimes companies take these steps in a superficial way, considering them to be formalities instead of actually addressing concerns.</p>
  222. <p>However, these instances are the exception rather than the rule. When carefully planned and executed, health and safety regulations are rarely about looks; rather, they address actual issues and reduce significant hazards.</p>

  224. <p>The key to managing health and safety effectively is balance. Real hazards must be addressed by policies without becoming too restrictive or complex. Education is essential; in order to guarantee that compliance is motivated by awareness rather than duty, people must comprehend the &#8220;why&#8221; behind these efforts. Leaders must also modify their strategy to fit particular settings and sectors. In an office setting, something that works on a building site might not make sense. Organisations can achieve the ideal balance by coordinating safety initiatives with context and pragmatism.</p>
  225. <p>Health and safety precautions may seem unnecessary at first, but when you weigh the alternatives, you can understand why they are essential. Creating areas where people feel safe and appreciated is more important than window decorating or checking boxes.   349. <p style="text-align: left;">The concept of Fire Aware was created in 2019 following Dame Judith Hackitt’s plea that the construction industry positively change its culture following the Grenfell Tower disaster in 2017. The organisation’s founder Gavin Skelly FCIOB, having 35 years experience of the contracting industry recognised that the behaviours of those with a fire safety duty of care was something that needed to be examined and tackled if this change was to happen. While there was an undisputable need for change in the science and regulation of fire safety, there is also a need to ensure those using those rules and regulations recognised that using them in the spirit in which they had been written was equally important. The Grenfell Inquiry told of systemic failings in the regulatory and commercial sectors invoking the race to the bottom in many of the contributing issues that combined to create the disaster. In the case of Grenfell Tower, these failings spread wider than just the contractors carrying out refurbishment works. Fire Aware recognised that focusing only on the construction industry left out a wide spectrum of duty holders, so created an organisation that is open to any business with a fire safety duty of care. And critically, the organisation is open to clients as well as suppliers. There is much evidence in the fire sector of clients offsetting their responsibility to subcontractor’s and specialists assuming that their duty of care transfers to the supplier via the appointment. There is also evidence that clients separate the responsibility of choosing suppliers from the budgetary workings of a business, and effectively can engage the race to the bottom while believing their risk is covered.Fire Aware therefore has been created to include clients and suppliers who are prepared to procure and trade responsibly under one umbrella, giving all within its membership an identity of businesses trading accountably. This is a huge USP in the post Grenfell era as this attitude was previously an invisible investment. Identifying this corporate ethic and uniting it with many other businesses who think the same way, provides an easily recognisable marque for the public to understand. Due to the bandwidth of companies who carry a duty of care, this marque can be seen in many different settings, becoming a common signal to the public that the holder is being tested on its behaviours. And in creating this unity and making it visible, it becomes a condition of sale in the minds of the purchaser making it more difficult for those who do not subscribe, to compete with those that do. This is how culture changes. By identifying responsible businesses and giving the purchaser the choice. And by extending the USP to the purchaser in return for making that choice, the marque rises vertically up the supply chain until it emerges into the public conscience.</p>
  350. <p>Fire Aware has the ability to change culture, much in the same way that the CCS changed the image of construction over the last 20 years. By giving those companies and individuals with the integrity to only do the right thing a common identity, the organisation has provided the public with trust mark in an industry where much faith has been lost. This process can only support regulatory compliance and help the statutory authorities navigate the difficult landscape the fire sector can be. Fire Aware is not about what you do as a business specifically. Its more about how you behave when doing it, and the more responsibility we can bring into the sector, the quicker cultural change will follow.</p>
