43.

 44.
Microsoft Corp. says it will defend buyers of its artificial intelligence products from copyright infringement lawsuits, an effort by the software giant to ease concerns customers might have about using its AI “Copilots” to generate content based on existing work.

 45.
The Microsoft Copilot Copyright Commitment will protect customers as long as they’ve “used the guardrails and content filters we have built into our products” Hossein Nowbar, General Counsel, Corporate Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary at Microsoft, said in a blog post Thursday. Microsoft also pledged to pay related fines or settlements and said it has taken steps to ensure its Copilots respect copyright.

 46.
“We believe in standing behind our customers when they use our products,” Nowbar said. “We are charging our commercial customers for our Copilots, and if their use creates legal issues, we should make this our problem rather than our customers’ problem.”

 47.
Generative AI applications scoop up existing content such as art, articles and programming code and use it to generate new material that can simplify or automate a range of tasks. Microsoft is baking the technology, developed with partner OpenAI Inc., into many of its biggest products, including Office and Windows, potentially putting customers in legal jeopardy.

 48.
Artists, writers and software developers are already filing lawsuits or raising objections about their creations being used without their consent. In one complaint, lawyer and computer programmer Matthew Butterick accused Microsoft’s GitHub partner of allegedly violating open-source software development licenses. A group of anonymous individuals seeking class action status also has filed suit against OpenAI and Microsoft, claiming they’re stealing “vast amounts” of personal information to train AI models in a heedless hunt for profits.

 49.
News organizations are mulling their own complaints, comedian Sarah Silverman has filed suit against OpenAI and Meta Platforms Inc., and artists are suing AI image generators Stability AI and Midjourney in a San Francisco court, although the judge has expressed skepticism about aspects of the case.

 50.
Generative AI could raise novel questions about the fair use of copyrighted materials, a legal defense that allows the use of content in certain cases. Fair-use doctrine itself has been further complicated by a May Supreme Court ruling in favor of a photographer who accused the Andy Warhol estate of improperly using her work to create 16 images of the late musician Prince.

 51.
It’s not the first time Microsoft has deployed a legal shield to keep customers loyal. In the 2000s, the company offered indemnification to partners and later customers using or reselling its software, a bid to differentiate Microsoft from Linux and other open-source software makers. In 2017, Microsoft, by then a seller of open-source software itself, offered to protect customers of its Azure cloud products from legal claims.

 52.
The company in June announced a program to help customers ensure the AI programs they run on Microsoft platforms meet global laws and regulations. Earlier this year, Adobe Inc. also offered subscribers of its AI tools legal protection against copyright infringement.

 105.
Tech Briefing today: Today was an eventful day in the world of technology. A new leak has surfaced online that has revealed the possible prices for the iPhone 15 series. As per the leaks, the Pro models can witness a price hike. In other news, the official X account of ISRO shared a selfie taken by the camera onboard Aditya-L1 solar mission, which is currently on its way to the Lagrange 1 (L1) point between the Sun and the Earth. This marked a big moment for the space agency as it was also able to test the cameras on the spacecraft. This and more in today’s tech briefing. Let us take a look.

 106.
iPhone 15 series price leaked

 107.
Over the past few weeks, leaks have suggested that iPhone 15 Pro models may get a price hike of $100 and $200. This may come true as the Pro versions come with various new upgrades that can push up the cost of manufacturing significantly. Some of them include a titanium frame, a display with thinner bezels, an action button, and more.

 108.
As per a Tom’s Guide report, the iPhone 15 price may start from $799 and as for the iPhone 15 Plus, it may start from $899. If this turns out to be true, then the standard models will not see any price hike. However, this is not etched in stone. The base iPhone 15 and Plus models are also getting big upgrades and it remains to be seen whether the price hike may happen.

 109.
However, the iPhone 15 Pro models’ prices are expected to rise. The iPhone 15 Pro may cost around $1099, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max may cost $1199 or even $1299. The iPhone 15 Pro Max may even get a $200 hike in price because of the new periscope zoom lens. Dig deeper.

 110.
Aditya-L1 shares a selfie

 111.
It has been 5 days since Aditya-L1, India’s maiden solar mission’s journey began, and for the first time, it has snapped a selfie of itself as well as the Earth and the Moon. ISRO has now shared these images on its official X account and said, “Aditya-L1 Mission: Onlooker! Aditya-L1, destined for the Sun-Earth L1 point, takes a selfie and images of the Earth and the Moon”.

 112.
In the selfie, the VELC (Visible Emission Line Coronagraph) and SUIT (Solar Ultraviolet Imager) instruments can be seen by the camera attached to the Aditya-L1. The images were taken by the spacecraft on September 4, just two days after its launch. Dig deeper.

 113.
YouTube tests new gaming feature

 114.
YouTube is expanding its gaming segment with a new feature called Playables, as per a TechCrunch report. The platform already caters to gamers and has a separate section for gaming videos and live streaming. But this new feature will take you from a viewer and turn you into a gamer. Playables are games that you can play right on YouTube, whether you’re on a computer or a mobile device. Google is testing this feature with a select group of users. These games will have their own section on YouTube’s main page, and you can access them on both computers and phones. Whether these games will be rolled out to a larger audience is as yet unknown. Dig Deeper.

 115.
Slack gets an AI feature

 116.
Slack users will soon get a new AI feature that will allow them to get a quick summary of unread messages in groups and channels. Users will also be able to ask the AI questions around those conversations. The feature, which is being called AI conversation summary, will soon roll out in a limited capacity.

 117.
According to a report by Axios, the reason behind using AI for this feature was two-pronged. Slack’s senior VP of product, Rob Seaman spoke with Axios and explained that the company felt there was a need for a feature like this and it was understood that this is where generative AI can be useful. Dig deeper.

 118.
Android 14 release date gets delayed

 119.
Google Android 14 was earlier believed to roll out this month, however, some reports claim that it has been delayed. Now, it is expected to be launched with Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro launch event which is scheduled for October 4, 2023.

 120.
According to Journalist Mishaal Rahman’s X post, the delay of the launch date happened at the last moment. Rahman said, “Hearing now that the source code release of Android 14 has been delayed to next month. This decision seems to have been made very late, as even OEMs were anticipating that the release would be today.” Dig deeper.

 141.

 142.
On September 2, India’s first-ever space-based solar observatory took off from Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR (SDSC SHAR), Sriharikota. The ISRO solar mission is now headed towards the Lagrange 1 (L1) point, a stable gravity zone between the Earth and the Sun, located about 1.5 million kilometers away from the Earth. It has been 5 days since its journey began, and for the first time, Aditya-L1 has looked back at Earth, Moon to take a photo. Not just a photo of the home planet, Aditya-L1 also took a selfie. The spacecraft then shared the selfie and other photos of Earth and Moon with ISRO.

 143.
ISRO has now shared these images on its official X account and said, “Aditya-L1 Mission: Onlooker! Aditya-L1, destined for the Sun-Earth L1 point, takes a selfie and images of the Earth and the Moon”.

 144.
In the selfie, the VELC (Visible Emission Line Coronagraph) and SUIT (Solar Ultraviolet Imager) instruments can be seen by the camera attached to the Aditya-L1. The images were taken by the spacecraft on September 4, just two days after its launch. On the same day, it also clicked a picture of Earth and Moon can be seen in the background. The image is a reminder of how far Aditya-L1 has moved from the planet in such a short time and also how small and insignificant planet Earth and its Moon seem from a distance.

 145.
Aditya-L1’s journey to the L1 point

 146.
The spacecraft has completed two successful maneuvers around the Earth, with the last move coming on September 5. As perISRO, the next maneuver will occur on September 10. After that, one final maneuver will take place in order to fit the spacecraft in the L1 point.

 147.
During the spacecraft’s trajectory towards L1, it will first exit the Earth’s gravitational pull which is called the Sphere of Influence (SOI). Then the spacecraft will transition into the cruise phase and eventually be placed into a large halo orbit around L1. The entire trip from launch to L1 is expected to last around four months for Aditya-L1.

 148.
The mission aims to get a deeper understanding of the Sun’s chromospheric and coronal heating, the physics of the partially ionized plasma, the formation of the coronal mass ejections, and solar flares. It will study different layers including the outermost layer of the Sun. Additionally, it plans to study the formation and composition of solar wind and space weather.

 169.

 170.
Have you ever heard of words like generative AI, GPT, or LLM? Well, now they’re in the dictionary! Dictionary.com, which is a website that helps you understand the meanings of words, has decided to add these new words to its collection. The people at Dictionary.com have been working hard to keep up with our ever-changing language. So, they just added 566 new words and 348 new definitions for the fall of 2023. They say it’s important to do this to make sure their dictionary is useful and up-to-date.

 171.
Hallucinations in the Age of AI

 172.
But that’s not all! Dictionary.com has also given a new meaning to the word “hallucinate” when it comes to generative AI. In this context, it means when a computer program makes up false information that goes against what the user wanted and pretends that it’s true, The Verge reported.

 173.
Generative AI is a special kind of computer program that can create things like stories and art. GPT and LLM are names for different types of generative AI.

 174.
New Words and Meanings

 175.
Some other new words they added include “nepo baby,” which means a famous person who became famous because of their famous parents. There’s also “jawn,” which is a word for something or someone when you don’t know or can’t think of a specific word. “Biohacking” means doing experiments on your own body, like a science experiment. “Algo” is short for computer algorithm, which is a set of steps a computer follows to do something. Lastly, “information pollution” is when false or unimportant information mixes with important facts, making it hard to tell what’s true.

 176.
Dictionary.com didn’t only add English words; they added some from other languages too! “Hanbok” is a traditional Korean dress. “Jolabokaflod” is an Icelandic tradition where people give books as Christmas presents. “Kakeibo” is a Japanese word for a system to keep track of your household budget.

 177.
By adding these words, Dictionary.com is keeping up with how language changes. They want to be a helpful tool for understanding words and phrases that are important to us now well into the future.

 195. [ad_1]
196.

 197.

 198.
Apple has officially announced its next event, which will be held on 12 September at its Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino, California.

 199.
Online chatter is focused mainly on the release of the next generation of the iPhone, the iPhone 15, but that’s not the only big announcement Apple fans can expect.

 200.
Let’s take a look at some of the potential announcements that are rumored to happen at the Apple event, including updates to the Apple Watch line as well as the potential launch of the iPad Mini 7.

 201.
iPhone 15: A complete overhaul

 202.
The next generation of the iPhone is inspiring a lot of conversation online. This year everything points to a slight change in the design of Apple’s new smartphones, but as usual, the new features will depend on each model.

 203.
One big change will be Apple’s decision to replace its proprietary Lightning port power connector with the USB Type-C, a decision that was driven by the new European Union regulation that will come into effect in 2024, which requires all manufacturers of portable electronic devices including smartphones, tablets and laptops, to use the same standard for chargers.

 204.
The switch to USB Type-C could increase the charging speed to at least 35W, but there is reason to believe that Apple could limit the charging capacity in the new iPhone series.

 205.
Other changes to the iPhone will most likely vary by model. Starting with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, there’s a good chance these will inherit several features from the iPhone 14 Pro, including a 48MP camera and Dynamic Island, which is a pill-shaped display at the top of the screen that provides notifications and allows users to interact with apps.

 206.
On the other hand, the more advanced “Pro” versions this year could have some striking changes. First, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are expected to arrive with wider screen designs thanks to a reduction of the bezels.

 207.
Inside, these versions are expected to carry a new powerful processor called the A17 Bionic, which would be much more potent and efficient compared to the previous generations of A15 and A16 chips. What’s more, the A17 would become the first large-scale consumer chip manufactured with the new 3nm process from Taiwanese chip manufacturing giant TSMC, according to Macworld’s Jason Cross.

 208.
Consumers may also benefit from an increase in RAM memory up to 8GB, as well as improvements in camera performance, especially for the Pro Max, which is rumored to have an advanced telephoto lens capacity.

 209.
These Pro versions are also expected to shed some serious weight. According to reports, the new titanium design for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max could weigh 191g and 221g respectively. That’s 15g lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro and 19g lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

 210.
Finally, one thing Apple fans can’t seem to decide on is whether or not the top-of-the-line iPhone will retain its name, the iPhone 15 Pro Max, or if it will rebrand itself in-line with its Apple Watch Ultra cousin as the iPhone 15 Pro Ultra. That’s something we won’t know for sure until the version is revealed next week.

 211.
Apple Watch Series 9

 212.
The update of Apple’s smartwatch has pretty much become an annual custom in recent years. Therefore, it is almost set in stone that the company has everything ready to unveil the new Apple Watch Series 9 line.

 213.
Consumers can probably expect a gradual update with some interesting novelties, but the new Series 9 is expected to inherit many of the best features from the Series 8.

 214.
Changes could include an upgrade to a new S9 chip, which will be faster and more efficient than previous chipsets, and provide for a longer battery life.

 215.
Also, in a recent report, Analyst Mark Gurman anticipated that Apple is working on new blood glucose and blood pressure sensors to incorporate into the Apple Watch. According to the report, the company has been working on this technology for more than 12 years (when Steve Jobs was alive), but there is still no news on when this technology might be included into the company’s smartwatches.

 216.
iPad Mini 7

 217.
Expectations are high about the launch of a new iPad Mini 7.

 218.
While Apple has held separate events in the fall announcing the refresh of its tablets, the 12 September event could be an ideal date to refresh the iPad Mini 6, which was announced alongside the iPhone 13 two years ago.

 219.
The new iPad Mini 7 is expected to arrive with a Smart Connector to connect to a physical keyboard.

 220.
It could also feature a 120 Hz ProMotion display, a refreshed color gamut similar to the 10th generation iPad and an M1 chip.

 221.
Other new features

 222.
The upcoming Apple event could also be used to showcase some changes to personal entertainment and home listening devices from the tech giant.

 223.
While we probably won’t see the launch of Apple’s latest AirPods — AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2 — until at least the second half of 2024, according to tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, we may see Apple announce the incorporation of a USB-C charging port in both models.

 224.
Also, we could possibly see Apple present a new display for its HomePod, the company’s home listening device equipped with its digital assistant, Siri. The long-rumored device could feature a 7-inch display that could facilitate better integrations with other Apple devices. However, this would be a leap ahead from the expected time table for release by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who predicted Apple might unveil the device early next year.

 246.

 247.
The shift to a hybrid work environment following the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge in the emergence of online communications platforms. Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet are just some of the companies battling it out to provide workspace to organizations. This healthy competition has led to innovation with these platforms becoming one place for meetings, document storage, chats, and more. To keep up, and possibly gain an upper hand over its competitors, Zoom has announced a rebranded AI companion that will assist users in day-to-day activities.

 248.
Zoom AI Companion

 249.
Zoom is not new to AI technology, and it has rebranded its existing generative AI assistant known as Zoom IQ to Zoom AI Companion. It can help compose chat responses based on the user’s prompts with the right tone and length. The AI Companion can also generate summaries and help you catch up on the stuff you have missed. Harnessing the power of AI, the generative AI assistant can automatically divide cloud recordings into smart chapters for easy review, create steps for action, and highlight important information.

 250.
In a blog post, the company announced, “We’re excited to introduce you to AI Companion (formerly Zoom IQ), your new generative AI assistant across the Zoom platform. AI Companion empowers individuals by helping them be more productive, connect and collaborate with teammates, and improve their skills.”

 251.
Upcoming features

 252.
The Zoom AI Companion will also get a feature later this month that allows it to summarize your chat messages, and offer reply suggestions. Another upcoming feature will enable the AI assistant to generate ideas on a digital whiteboard and organize them into categories. Zoom Phone is also set to get AI features.

 253.
With AI Companion, users will be able to access an AI-generated analysis of their recorded phone calls and summaries of their voicemails as well as messages. Additionally, users will soon be able to converse with the AI assistant in ChatGPT-style text-based prompts.

 254.
Availability

 255.
The Zoom AI Companion and its suite of smart features will be available to Zoom paid subscribers at no additional cost. Free users can upgrade to paid plans to take advantage of Zoom’s AI features.

 256.
Navigating the privacy concerns that have troubled Zoom in the past few months, the company has announced that “Zoom does not use any of your audio, video, chat, screen sharing, attachments, or other communications-like customer content (such as poll results, whiteboard, and reactions) to train Zoom’s or third-party artificial intelligence models.”

 277.
Tech Briefing: Today, Google dominated the headlines as the company CEO Sundar Pichai wrote a long message mapping out the search engine giant’s journey so far, the impact of its technology, and the path for its future, ahead of Google’s 25th anniversary. Pichai highlighted that AI will be a primary focus for the company. In other news, a new leak has disappointed Apple fans, as just six days before the launch, it is being said that the iPhone 15 Pro Max might be delayed by as much as four weeks. This and more in today’s Tech briefing. Let us take a look.

 278.
Ahead of Google’s completion of 25 years, which is generally celebrated on September 27 with a Google Doodle, CEO Sundar Pichai has shared a 2400-word memo where he looked back at the journey of the company, its role in transforming technology, and the path towards the future. Pichai posted his message, titled “Questions, shrugs and what comes next: A quarter century of change”, to celebrate a quarter of a century of the existence of Google. It was a heartfelt message that also included the mention of his father and son. Dig deeper.

 279.
iPhone 15 Pro Max can suffer a delay

 280.
Just six days before the Apple event, a new leak has revealed that the iPhone 15 Pro Max can suffer a delay of 4 weeks before it is launched. This new information comes from a tipster named Revegnus, who mentioned in a post on X, “The yield issues with Sony, the supplier of image sensors for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, are severe. As a result, the release date of the iPhone 15 Pro Max could be delayed by up to approximately 4 weeks”. The tipster also shared a TrendForce report to highlight that Sony is indeed facing a yield issue with the new sensors. Dig deeper.

 281.
Google unveils new Android logo

 282.
Google announced the new logo and typeface in its blog post where it said, “We’re sharing an update to our visual identity that better represents our Android community — and it’s also a lot of fun, too”. The new bugdroid logo now gets a 3D avatar and elements that have been inspired by its Material design. The Android typeface has also changed and now a capital A is being used for the logo instead of all small letters. The stylization has also been done to make the Android logo appear similar to the Google logo.

 283.
The new logo and branding will roll out later this year. It is expected that it will be seen with the Android 14 update. Dig deeper.

 284.
Delhi Police issues advisory ahead of G20 summit, suggests app to monitor traffic

 285.
Delhi Police has shared the Delhi traffic advisory on Virtual Helpdesk of Delhi Traffic Police for the G20 summit which will commence on September 9 and 10. Traffic will be impacted during this time, as the restrictions will come into force starting from September 8. Delhi Police have asked the public to use Mappls MapmyIndia app to ensure they do not go into restricted areas and get caught in a traffic jam.

 286.
Mappls shared a post on their X handle saying, “During the G20 Summit in Delhi, all can get accurate maps & navigation for smooth guidance based on official & updated Delhi Police traffic advisories by using the Mappls MapmyIndia app”. Dig deeper.

 287.
China bans iPhone for Central government agencies

 288.
Chinese government agencies have reportedly prohibited employees from using Apple iPhones and other foreign-made devices while on duty, according to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal. Some central government regulators have conveyed these instructions via chat groups and meetings, although the extent of these directives remains unclear. Despite Apple’s popularity in China, especially its iPhone sales, growing tensions between the US and China in the technology sector have prompted Beijing to discourage foreign devices, emphasizing domestic alternatives. This move aligns with China’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on American technology and secure its own tech sovereignty. Dig deeper.

 341.

 342.
With the equinox approaching on September 23, solar activities have picked up again. It is known that during this period, the Earth suffered due to a higher frequency of extreme solar activities due to the magnetic poles of the Earth making a right angle with the Sun. And in the last 24 hours, the Earth has witnessed some intense blows from the Sun. There have been instances of radio blackouts, solar flare eruptions, CME releases, and a possible solar storm that can strike the Earth at any given time. So, let us take a look at what has happened in this brief period and how it affects us.

 343.
Radio blackouts

 344.
According to the data from SpaceWeatherLive’s X account, there were two separate instances of shortwave radio blackouts. The first struck at 1 AM today, with the focal point being in the Pacific Ocean and it impacted both North and South Americas. The blackout was believed to have come from a solar flare eruption of an M1.08 category.

 345.
The second one struck at 5 AM and it was also centered in the Pacific Ocean. Luckily, no landmass came under its area of impact. It was estimated to have come from an M1.1-class solar flare eruption.

 346.
Solar flares

 347.
As we all know shortwave radio blackouts are the after-effect of a solar flare eruption, two separate flares were also detected going off prior to the blackout. The first one was estimated to have come from sunspot region AR3421 and contained an intensity of the level M1.26. The second one also emerged from the same sunspot region and it contained an intensity of M1.01.

 348.
Yesterday, SpaceWeatherLive also gave a warning for an incoming solar storm. It posted, “The tell-tale signs of a coronal mass ejection passage have been observed in the data coming from the DSCOVR satellite. A sudden jump in the solar wind and IMF stats have been observed as a plasma cloud passes the satellite. Expect enhanced geomagnetic conditions in the next 12 to 24 hours depending on how the situation develops”.

 349.
This storm is expected to hit within the next few hours. As per the data, it is not expected to be a major solar storm.
