During this month, individuals are encouraged to embark on new artistic endeavors or explore a new skill.

Lee Hunnell, a resident at The Buckingham, a premier senior living community in Houston, has been pouring her creativity into a remarkable textile art piece for the St. Martin’s Church for the past four years.

In 2020, she launched this textile art project for installation at St. Martin’s Church. The purpose of the piece is to drape it over the cushion on the church kneeler. Collaborating closely with the Saintly Stitchers, a needlepoint group at St. Martin’s, she has poured her creative energy into this endeavor. The piece consists of a stitch-basket weave technique and has over 125,000 stitches.

“When people in church kneel, they see beautiful stained-glass windows, that help translate the story of Jesus. I intended to create an environment where those kneelers could feel at ease, seamlessly translating the story of Christ into their hearts.”

Whether young or old, it’s never too late to start a new project or learn a new skill.

 36.
The Buckingham Resident Celebrates National Grandmother Achievement Day

 38.

 39.

February 11 was National Grandmother Achievement Day, a day to celebrate the remarkable grandmothers who enrich our lives with their wisdom, love, and accomplishments. Mamie McCullough, an 84-year-old resident at The Buckingham, a premier senior living community in Houston, exemplifies the spirit of this day. As a motivational speaker and the author of six books, she inspires others with her powerful message: “I Can. You Can Too!” Mamie’s words have guided countless individuals through adversity, empowering them to achieve their dreams.

McCullough’s journey has been one of resilience. Growing up in poverty in South Georgia, she toiled in cotton fields, harvested tobacco and endured weeks surviving on nothing but beans. In June 1999, as a mother of three, she faced her greatest challenge: a breast cancer diagnosis that necessitated a radical mastectomy.

Despite the challenges she faced, McCullough remained optimistic. “My childhood motivated me to want more for myself,” said McCullough. “We all go through rough patches in life, but it's about what we do with it. Even when I got the diagnosis I remained intact. I was emotional, of course. I cried, but I felt peace, knowing that God had everything under control.”

McCullough was a public school teacher for five years in Georgia, and then a principal. She leveraged her teaching skills into motivational speaking and became president of the Zig Ziglar Corporation. During her tenure with the Zig Ziglar Corporation, she authored six books including her most famous, I Can, You Can Too! which helped many people overcome obstacles.

“Life is not about where you start it is about where you go,” said McCullough. “My goal in life is to help others, and I feel like I’ve done that through my teaching and motivational speaking. We don’t know what somebody else is going through, so it is always important to be kind to one another. I am lucky to have lived a good life and have a good retirement here at The Buckingham.”

McCullough has six grandchildren and will be celebrating National Grandmother Achievement Day at The Buckingham.

About the Buckingham
The Buckingham is a premier Houston senior living community that offers luxurious amenities and high-end services. They offer all levels of living from independent living to assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care. The Buckingham is a place to explore new interests and develop connections with the people around you.

 44.
Edgemere resident celebrates National Hobby Month with Gold Leaf Artwork

 46.

 47.

January is National Hobby Month, a time when people of all ages celebrate their favorite hobbies and embark on new ones. It’s the perfect opportunity to explore new interests or rediscover old ones you haven’t thought about in a while.

Barbara Baldwin, an 80-year-old resident at Edgemere, a premier senior living community in Dallas, has been doing gold-leaf art for 20 years and has created some beautiful pieces. Her gold-leaf art can be found at The Dallas Holocaust Museum and the Museum of Biblical Art in Dallas.

During her young adult years, she was a papermaker who experimented with different bulbs. However, she eventually decided to try something new. About 20 years ago, she bought the supplies to try out gold leaf art. One day, while working on a project, she picked up a peacock feather and began pasting the gold onto it. It wasn’t long before she became intrigued by how gold-leaf artwork adds an ethereal touch to her projects.

“My inspiration comes from biblical art, particularly the Solomon’s Temple in Jerusalem. The beauty of gold against the temple is striking. I incorporate gold into my art because it allows me to blend history with modern art pieces.”

Whether you’re young or old, it’s never too late to start a new hobby or reconnect with an old one!

 52.
The Legacy Willow Bend’s Knit and Crochet Club Warms the Hearts and Lives of Residents

 55.

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and compassion, The Legacy Willow Bend's Knit and Crochet Club donated 4,519 handmade items to 15 organizations in the Greater Dallas and Plano area. The donation event on Monday, December 4, was a special occasion. Attended by Plano Mayor John B. Muns and other community dignitaries, the event showcased an array of handcrafted items including scarves, dolls, blankets, hats, and washcloths. Each piece was lovingly created and presented, highlighting the community's dedication and skill. Mayor Muns also presented a "Certificate of Commendation" from the city, acknowledging this remarkable effort.

Event Highlights:

Located in Plano's only life care retirement community, the club has been a mainstay of volunteerism since 2010. Comprising residents of the Jewish-sponsored community, the club has produced over 42,662 items to date. This year the club continued its partnership with volunteers from Bank of America, dating back to 2019, topping hats with handmade pompoms. The club's 21 active members, who meet weekly, have collectively dedicated over 800 volunteer hours this year alone, leading up to the much-anticipated distribution event.

Brian Lovelace, activity professional certified, volunteer engagement manager at The Legacy Willow Bend, spoke about the heartfelt reactions to their donations: “The club’s efforts resonate deeply with the community. We hear stories that really hit home. One of the best was a recipient asking, ‘Someone made this for me?’ It shows the real difference we make. A hat or scarf from our club becomes a prized possession for many who have nothing else to call their own, and a handmade doll can light up a child's world during tough times. These heartfelt responses highlight how our club offers more than just physical comfort; we bring emotional support and a feeling of connection to those who need it most.”

The Legacy Knit and Crochet Club, deeply committed to volunteering and contributing to the broader community, views their annual distribution event as the pinnacle of their year-long dedication and hard work. This year, they enhanced their donations by including toiletry kits complete with handmade washcloths, toothpaste, and toothbrushes, adding an extra layer of care to their offerings.

Community Collaboration and Involvement:

Karen Kurzman, a member of The Legacy Knit and Crochet Club, shared her feelings about the experience: "Being part of this is deeply emotional. It inspires you to continue giving. Knowing what we do is appreciated gives us a profound sense of contributing to the community."

In addition to Kurzman, the group members consist of Mary Bishop, Zandy Bloom, Christina Chan, Arleen Chodroff, Sundra Culver, Marilee Donaldson, Marci Haas, Vy Hansen, Nancy Hofstetter, Jan Introligator, Irene Jacobs, Stephanie Jones, Nancy Lewis, Ailsa Kull, Marilyn Lemont, Reesa Portnoy, Raelaine Radnitz, Vicki Shepard, Lillie Walker, Jean Weinfeld, and Caren Tate (resident of The Legacy Midtown Park).

Recipients of the donations include Cathedral of Hope, Children's Hospital of Plano, Christ United Methodist Church Plano, Cochran Chapel, Dallas Police Department Mentoring Program, Dallas Police Department supporting Anne Frank Elementary School, Hope’s Door, Jewish Family Service, Mesquite ISD, Plano ISD, Plano Police Department Christmas Cops, Minnie’s Food Pantry, National Council of Jewish Women supporting Mosaic Family Services and West Dallas Elementary Schools, Streetside Showers, and Vickery Meadow Food Pantry and Clothes Closet.

ABOUT THE LEGACY SENIOR COMMUNITIES:

The Legacy Senior Communities Inc. is the parent company of The Legacy Willow Bend (a life care community), The Legacy at Home (Hospice, Personal Assistance Services and Home Health Care Services), and The Legacy Midtown Park (luxury rental senior living in Dallas). 101.
Older Texans and Their Families Deserve Quality Nursing Home Care: Let’s Get It Right!

 102.

 103.

 104.

by Rodney Rueter, President & CEO of Lutheran Sunset Ministries, and past Chair of LeadingAge Texas

Over the past 69 years, older Texans and their families have relied on Lutheran Sunset Ministries for a range of critical services, including nursing home care. Our roots in Clifton are deep: begun by Lutheran congregations in 1954, generations of families have called our ministry home.

Our ability to continue serving our rural community is threatened by a proposed staffing requirement issued by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on September 1, 2023, as part of the Biden Administration’s focus on ensuring quality care in nursing homes. We share that goal, and as demonstrated by our history, are committed to providing the type of care we ourselves would want to receive. No mandate from a government authority has been needed to meet that mission.

Over 90% of Texas nursing homes would fail to meet the proposed standards. We could not. Already, there are times when, due to staffing needs, we are forced to limit admissions.

CMS’ proposal – an across-the-board staffing hours per resident day (HPRD) requirement – comes at a time of unprecedented workforce shortages. By CMS’ own estimates, an additional 12,639 RNs and 76,376 nurse aides are needed to meet this requirement. Particularly for providers in rural areas, this is impossible.

Last year, the Texas Center for Nursing Workforce Studies released data showing over 15,000 qualified nursing school applications were not offered admission in 2021. On average, Texas turns away more than 10,000 qualified applications each year from its nursing programs. There is not a quick solution to this shortage.

For nurse aides, we have increased pay 30% since the pandemic and still can’t hire enough nurse aides. It’s just too difficult to compete with other sectors.

Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVN) are also crucial to the delivery of our care. Yet, CMS’ mandate completely ignores LVNs, as if they have nothing to offer. That could not be further from the truth. The requirement should be a hybrid that includes these vital and caring professionals.

Then there is the financial impact of the proposal, which CMS does little to address but estimates will cost over $4 billion to implement in the first year alone (other estimates are higher, as much as $7 billion). For our ministry, it would cost us a million dollars to comply. Nursing homes, unlike other businesses, are funded through Medicare and Medicaid, and for more than a decade that funding has been woefully inadequate in Texas.

Over half of our nursing home residents are on Medicaid; we cannot charge the state more to cover these additional expenses. We would have to increase the rates of our private pay residents by two thousand dollars a month to cover this additional cost. Families cannot afford it and shouldn’t have to shoulder that burden.

If this mandate is allowed to be implemented as proposed, it could further limit access to care by affecting more than just nursing homes. The broader healthcare system will be disrupted and reshuffling the limited number of care workers available between settings won’t solve the problem.

When nursing homes close, where will residents in our community go for the care they need? Instead of ineffective new rules, the administration should invest in serious solutions to tackle the aging services workforce crisis. We are sharing the very real impact this rule will have on rural communities like ours, as well as solutions with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid. Together, we can get it right!

 258.

LeadingAge Texas applauds the Texas Legislature for prioritizing seniors in budget bills filed by State Senator Joan Huffman and Representative Greg Bonnen last week. The appropriations bills make critical investments to support nursing homes and the nursing workforce which have been heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We deeply appreciate the investments made in senior care this session. We understand difficult decisions are made when preparing budget proposals. This funding will help address some of the challenges not-for-profit aging services providers have expressed for more than a decade, but particularly over the last two years, “ said George Linial, president & CEO of LeadingAge Texas. “Caregivers in nursing homes have done a remarkable job caring for residents throughout the pandemic. The financial impact of COVID-19, an unprecedented workforce shortage and record-high inflation isn’t sustainable. These initial investments will help ensure older Texans have continued access to high-quality care.”

Rodney Rueter, LeadingAge Texas Board Chair and CEO of Lutheran Sunset Ministries said, “Not-for-profit providers are thrilled to see nursing homes prioritized in the budget. Our ministry is dedicated to serving seniors that rely on Medicaid for their care but underfunding poses a real threat to our mission. This investment is a step in the right direction. It will allow us to begin to recognize and reward the incredible commitment of our staff and continue providing dignified and compassionate care to our rural community."

SB 1 and HB 1, the base budgets filed by Senator Joan Huffman and Representative Greg Bonnen last week, make critical investments to prioritize Texas seniors and the caregivers serving them.

The 2024 – 2025 budget proposals include:

Approximately $400M to increase support for nursing homes.

$32M to increase support for nursing programs and repayment programs.

Contact: Alyse Meyer
alyse@leadingagetexas.org | 512- 467-2242 x105

In his new role, Olmstead will oversee operations of the faith-based, nonprofit senior living provider. He will also ensure the creation and implementation of new processes and strategies supporting the organizational mission of Buckner.

“I am excited to join an organization with the rich heritage of Buckner,” Olmstead said. “I’ve always worked within nonprofit, faith-based communities with a strong mission, and joining Buckner allows me to continue to work for a ministry that aligns with my personal values.”

Olmstead brings 21 years of senior living experience to Buckner. 281.

 282.

If you walk into the fitness room at The Buckingham on Tuesday and Friday mornings, you will catch people drumming to different genres of music. But it’s not just any group of people, they are independent living seniors who call The Buckingham, a premier senior living community, home. The popular class brings out dozens of residents who are reaping the health benefits from the 30-minute fitness class, including Marilyn Dillard.

When Dillard joined the class, she didn’t know what to expect, but now she says it’s one of the best things that has happened since she moved to The Buckingham. During the class, residents are given two drumsticks and while sitting down they move the sticks from one side to the other to the beat of the music. So far, they’ve drummed to country hits, Hawaiian tunes and even Elvis! Dillard says the class is for all residents no matter the stage of life you are in.

“It is such a lighthearted experience and a true benefit of living at The Buckingham,” said Dillard. “I don’t know of any other place that offers a fitness class like this. I enjoy the fact it not only works my body but my mind. The different movements and music really stimulate your brain. Overall, it has improved my mobility, especially my arms, and I’ve made great friends along the way.”

Recent research indicates that drumming accelerates physical healing, boosts the immune system, increases energy, and reduces tension, anxiety, depression, and stress. At The Buckingham, wellness is a key component of the community’s ASPYRE comprehensive lifestyle program, which is woven into all aspects of daily living.

“ASPYRE focuses on all components of successful aging, including physical fitness, spiritual, intellectual and emotional health,” said Jena Hoofnagle, fitness specialist at The Buckingham. “With this in place, opportunities for wellness become easily tailored to residents’ unique, personal preferences. We see it weekly with our drumming class. It is a fun way for residents to move their arms, work their core all while socializing with other residents. It has become the most popular class at The Buckingham, and I’m excited to see it continue to grow.”

About the Buckingham
The Buckingham is a premier Houston senior living community that offers luxurious amenities and high-end services. 290.

Juliette Fowler Communities Celebrates 130th Anniversary and Dedication of the Peak at Fowler, Housing for the “Forgotten Middle” Senior

The Peak at Fowler will help address the growing crisis in America for affordable and safe housing for senior adults with limited-to-moderate monetary resources

Sunny skies set the tone for a perfect celebration on November 17 as more than 125 guests gathered for a monumental celebration at Juliette Fowler Communities: the 130th anniversary of the beloved housing community in East Dallas and the dedication of its newest building, The Peak, a $24 million, 144-unit, three-story independent living senior housing community. The Peak addresses a national crisis – housing for the “forgotten middle” senior, who can neither afford higher-priced apartments nor qualify for lower-income housing. It is estimated that the middle-income senior population is expected to double by 2029 to 14.35 million (all 75+), with only 46 percent able to afford any form of senior housing. The Peak will provide residents a welcoming neighborhood of friends and the many benefits of living in a community.

Juliette Fowler Communities President and CEO Nicole Gann kicked off the festivities welcoming guests to the tented affair complete with fried chicken picnic basket lunches as was done for Fowler’s very first building dedication in 1905. JFC received its state charter in 1892, and before construction began on the Fowler’s East Dallas property, its first building, Faith Cottage, was in Grand Prairie.

“Our first newly constructed building was called Faith Cottage because our organization at that time chose to build when all they had was faith in God and faith in the generosity of His people,” said Nicole Gann. “Like our predecessors, we have been moving forward for 130 years in faith, with the knowledge and charge to care for God’s people.”

Guests were invited to take home two items as keepsakes of this momentous occasion: the picnic baskets as well as their seat cushions containing picnic blankets. Following a blessing from The Rev. Dr. Andy Mangum, regional minister for Christian Church of the Southwest, guests enjoyed lunch, be followed by the program, dedication service, and tours of The Peak.

Gann returned to the podium to thank those in the room, each of whom has made a contribution “as a friend, neighbor, donor, board member or as a Peak partner.” Special thanks were given to the event underwriters: USI Southwest, Luther King Capital Management, Robert Holt, East Dallas Christian Church, Regions Bank, Spring Valley Construction, and Northway Christian Church.

JFC Board Chair Ben Brooks then welcomed Max Sanchez, council liaison & policy advisor for District 14 from the Mayor and City of Dallas Council Office, who presented a proclamation declaring November 17 as Juliette Fowler Communities Day to the applause and cheers of the guests. Brooks then thanked the Dallas City Council. “Without their endorsement of our application for a state tax credit, we would not have The Peak and would not be sitting here today,” said Brooks. “For years we dreamed of what to do with our seven undeveloped acres trying to determine what was the greatest need for the community.”

He continued by recognizing the board, including beloved late board member Roland Bandy whose leadership was instrumental in this success as well as many other successes over the years. He recognized the partners who have worked with Fowler for many years to make this dream a reality: ARX Advantage Consulting, CA Partners, Caltech, Cole Engineering, Digital Way Services, Direct Supply, Intervest, Katus Design Group, Locke & Lord, Lument, Mason Joseph Company, National Equity Fund, NCS, Robinette & Associates, Shepherd Food Equipment, and Spring Valley Construction.

Robbie Meyer of ARX Advantage presented a gift to Fowler team members Nicole Gann, COO Billie Collins, and CFO Scott Martinez to acknowledge the success of completing The Peak. Engraved on the crystal was “Dreams Do Come True,” as Fowler referred to that land for many years as its field of dreams.

Brooks thanked the Frame the Future Capital Campaign Committee, who led the charge to raise the funds: Chair Carol Maxwell, Roland Bandy, Ken Hubbell, Gray Powers, Cindy Wabner, Lacey Young, Nicole Gann, and Ann McKinley. He highlighted the fact that the 2019 Dallas tornado played a role in Fowler’s ability to build the Peak. “This act of nature opened a door for this part of North Texas enabling Fowler to apply for a specific type of funding to build housing for an underserved community, fast forwarding the vision of The Peak. We give thanks for the blessing that grew from this tragedy.”

Nicole Gann recognized former presidents of Fowler who were in attendance: Cindy Dowell, wife of former president, the late Ed Dowell; Former President Kay Ellis; and Former President Sabrina Porter. She then explained why the building is called The Peak.

“Historically, our namesake, Juliette Fowler was a member of the Peak family,” added Gann. “Peak was her maiden name. The Peak family members were Dallas pioneers, and many streets of East Dallas are named for her siblings. Naming the building The Peak was a nod to our past, our pioneering history, and it also represents our vision, our hopes for those who will live here – to have moments of elevation that rise above the everyday – moments of engagement, joy, and motivation – the peaks.”

Gann recognized one of The Peak’s first donors, Annie Jones, who lives on the campus in Fowler Christian Apartments. Jones, a pioneer herself, is a well-known advocate for the rights of people with disabilities.

“Annie is someone who inspires us daily with her love for all people and her unquestionable generosity,” added Gann. Gann continued, due to Annie’s love for frogs, “we have commissioned an artist to fashion a frog that will be at Fowler in perpetuity in your honor.”

Before inviting Rev. Vanessa Harmel to lead the dedication service, Gann added that a Bible had also been buried in the porte cochere to symbolize our “foundational faith.” Following the dedication, guests were invited to “take a peek at The Peak,” and take a tour. Every unit is dedicated to housing for the “forgotten middle” senior with no market-rate apartments offered, making The Peak a unique Dallas living community focused on addressing a national housing crisis of affordable senior housing and supportive services for this population.

Amenities include a library, fitness program and gym, business center, courtyard, and access to an onsite chaplain, chapel, art room, pool, community gardens, and walking trails. Additionally, an onsite service coordinator will be available to assist with transportation, food, and other needs, including aging support and navigation of healthcare. The first resident is scheduled to move in this month.

Attendees included Evelyn Amaya and Brenda Martinez Del Rio, on behalf of Dallas Councilmember Jesse Moreno; Karen Roberts, Mount Auburn Neighborhood Association; Emily Somerville, President of the Junior League of Dallas; Kimberly Taliaferro, vice president, Regions Bank; and Steve Bruszer, Spring Valley Construction Co. Lead.

# # #

Juliette Fowler Communities is a unique faith-based, intergenerational community of residents at various life stages. Located on 20 picturesque acres, Juliette Fowler Communities provides independent and assisted living, a Five-Star Quality Rated skilled nursing and rehabilitation center, memory care, and affordable senior housing. As the only certified I’m Still Here® Center for Excellence in Dementia Care in North Texas and one of only two in Texas, Fowler’s program employs evidence-based techniques to adapt experiences to an individual’s cognitive abilities and strengths. JFC has also been named a Great Place to Work in the Aging Services Industry in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Children, youth, and family services at Fowler include foster and adoption services, a residential program for women ages 18-24 at risk for homelessness due to neglect, abuse, and aging out of the foster care system, and a new Youth Support Center – a one-stop location to help Dallas youth, both boys and girls ages 12-24, escape or avoid human trafficking and exploitation. Sisneroz had been serving as chief operating officer for The Wesleyan since June 2019. She succeeds Mark Lenhard who resigned in October to pursue another opportunity.

In announcing the decision, Board Chair Ed Komandosky said, “We were fortunate that we had many experienced applicants. In Sisneroz, we already had a proven leader with a deep understanding of The Wesleyan’s day-to-day operations.” The value of that experience comes at a critical time for The Wesleyan according to Komandosky. “Her insights into the opportunities and challenges ahead of us combined with her strong relationships with the residents and staff make her the right choice.”

On being named CEO, Sisneroz said, “My goal is that we maintain and fortify a financial foundation from which The Wesleyan can continue to grow and thrive.” The last years have been challenging everywhere in the healthcare industry. “Navigating through the global pandemic and aftermath has been a bit like riding a rollercoaster,” she said. “But, I am confident that The Wesleyan has a promising future in store and I am excited to be part of shaping that”, she added.

Sisneroz brings more than twenty years of experience in all levels of senior care. “My passion – transforming the culture of how care and how services are delivered – drives everything I do. Working with our staff, residents, board members, volunteers, and donors, will make The Wesleyan aplace where people want to live and work for generations to come,” she said.

Sisneroz earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State University. She is licensed as a Nursing Facility Administrator (LNFA) in the State of Texas. Prior to joining The Wesleyan, she served as Regional Vice President of Operations for organizations throughout Texas. 338.

Dear Members,

Before gathering this week with family and friends for good eats, the LeadingAge Texas team would like to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

While the holidays represent different things for us all, they are often a time for reflection and remembrance, gathering with loved ones, and embracing and celebrating tradition. We honor the rich diversity of backgrounds at all our member communities, where we value and respect each other's uniqueness while recognizing the similarities of our respective missions–caring for and advocating for seniors across Texas. It is this commonality that drew each of us to LeadingAge Texas in the first place.

I would like to acknowledge the tremendous strain we've all been under: ongoing pandemic struggles, national political and societal conflict, and the anxiety of returning to what many term "the new normal."

Despite these challenges, the noble work you do, and the work your association does to support you, never stops. The LeadingAge Texas board and staff are already diving into the new year–finalizing a strategic plan, preparing for the Texas Legislative Session, refining member programs, and creating opportunities to develop members through education, leadership programs, and networking.

With cooperation, input, and support from you, our dedicated members, LeadingAge Texas has served as a place to learn and grow, to seek and find solutions, and to serve as a sounding board and collaboration center.

During this season of gratitude, we also thank our 2022 Partners & Sponsors for their support this year.
