71.

Marsch is under increasing pressure following his team’s 3-2 defeat to Fulham at Elland Road on Sunday, which dropped them into the Premier League’s relegation zone.

 72.
March took over for Bielsa in February of this year, and El Loco has been out of work since.

 73.
Stelling believes that former Burnley manager Sean Dyche, as well as Elland Road legend Bielsa, might be options for Leeds.

 74.
Stelling said on Sky Sports News on Tuesday night: “More practically, Sean Dyche. Dare I say, Marcelo Bielsa is available.”

 75.
Morrison replied: “Well, you never know, he could go back because the Leeds fans love him. That would be the best story.

 76.
“I don’t think Pochettino because there was talk of Aston Villa. I think Pochettino wants to manage a top-six team. But I do believe a Bielsa or a Sean Dyche – obviously I saw him on Monday Night Football – he’s itching to get back into it.

 77.
“Leeds fans might not be happy with the style of play but if there’s one thing Sean Dyche does do, he’ll keep you in the Premier League nine times out of 10. He did it at Burnley and he’s a fantastic manager.

 78.
“It could be Sean Dyche but I don’t want to talk about that too much because Jesse Marsch is still in charge and I don’t want him to lose his job.”

 79.
Will Bielsa be back?

 80.
This is the man who quit Lazio just hours after they hired him because they didn’t sign the players he wanted quickly enough – despite the fact that the transfer market was still open when he departed.

 81.
Would he go back to the club that fired him if they were in a worse position when he left? Certainly not.

 82.
To be fair, Bielsa would like some of the players signed by Marsch over the summer.

 83.
Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams appear to be tailor-made for Bielsa.

 84.
And, as much as we’d like El Loco to return to Elland Road, there’s just no way it’s going to happen, so we’ll put it out of our minds for the time being.

 85.
If it does happen, it will be a crazy thing!

 86.
This isn’t a squad he’d be happy with, and you’d have to imagine his relationship with the board is strained following the manner in which he was fired and Marsch was already set up to replace him.

 87.
Marsch isn’t working out and may be lucky to be employed by the time the World Cup begins.

 102.

Leeds United boss Jesse Marsch “felt sorry for the fans” after accusing Aston Villa of repeated timewasting during Sunday’s goalless draw.

 103.
Marsch’s side secured a hard-earned point despite the 48th-minute sending off of Colombia winger Luis Sinisterra.

 104.
“This is the best league in the world and our fans don’t come here to watch a match at snail’s pace,” said Marsch.

 105.
But Villa boss Steven Gerrard replied: “Was he unhappy with their timewasting when they went down to 10 men?”

 106.
The ex-England midfielder added: “It works both ways.

 107.
“But I’m not interested in Jesse and what he thinks and his opinion. We will do what we need to do. I’m only interested in Aston Villa.”

 108.
Six different players received at least a caution at Elland Road – four from Leeds and two from Villa.

 109.
Villa had 19 shots, seven of which were on target, against Leeds’ six, with Patrick Bamford’s late strike – stopped by visiting keeper Emiliano Martinez – being their lone shot on target.

 110.
However, Marsch, who watched the game from the back of a stand while serving a one-game touchline punishment for his red card in last month’s 5-2 loss to Brentford, felt Villa were negative from the outset.

 111.
“I almost feel we have to apologise to our fans,” added the American.

 112.
“They didn’t get an entertaining match, they got a match that was slowed down by an opponent from the first minute and they [the fans] don’t get to enjoy coming to Elland Road as much as they should.

 113.
“I will be speaking to someone from the league and [have] already spoken to the referees’ committee, it’s clearly a tactic. I feel bad for our fans, they have to watch that and they don’t get an energetic game.

 114.
“It’s respect for how we play against the ball, in the aggression we show and quality we have against the ball. Our fans like to see us where the team plays with aggression and they [Villa] are trying to flip the script.

 115.
“I have had more referees that were able to manage it better – it leads to frustration to everyone in the crowd.”

 130.

Leeds United will be without manager Jesse Marsch in the Premier League clash against Aston Villa next weekend as the manager has received a suspension for a touchline match issued by the FA. The next Premier League game with Leeds United against Manchester United, due to take place this weekend, has been postponed due to a lack of police ahead of the funeral in Queens, meaning manager Jesse Marsch’s suspension will be discounted against Aston Villa. Leeds will play Aston Villa at Elland Road on October 2 after the Whites’ home game against Nottingham Forest was postponed.

 131.
On September 3, during the second half of a 5-2 loss, Marsch, 48, was dismissed for arguing with the fourth official after his team had been wrongfully refused a penalty. In a statement, the FA stated that “the manager recognised that his language and behaviour during the 64th minute of that game was unacceptable.” Against Brentford, he was given a red card for disputing with the authorities, and they afterwards claimed that the officials had unfair standards. In his postgame interview, Marsch stated, “I’ve got to find out how to have conversations with the league or with officials to help understand how some judgments get made. “Even when a penalty was assessed that I probably didn’t think was a penalty, I conversed with the fourth official, trying to be as courteous as possible. The respect isn’t then shown to you in return. That’s what I’d describe it as. To me, the absence of a VAR visit ultimately reflects a lack of respect.

 132.
Meet Over Salary Control Capping

 133.
According to The Times, Leeds United FC and other Premier League teams may face some form of salary limit in upcoming seasons. Stakeholders in the Premier League gathered on Wednesday to discuss the “New Deal for Football,” including reforms to cup competitions, lowering parachute payments, income redistribution in the EFL, and financial sustainability. According to reports, a portion of the conversation focused on clubs’ wages-to-turnover ratios, which have gotten out of hand, especially in the Championship. According to their overall revenue, UEFA is planning to impose a 70% salary restriction on teams; it will stop them from paying wages and bonuses that are greater than this sum.

 134.
Currently, Spain’s top division enforces a similar method that has made it difficult for FC Barcelona to sign players in recent summers as they fight to lower their pay cost. “Clubs would be capped at spending a specific proportion of their income on player wages, transfers, and agency fees in a calendar year,” according to the The Times.

 149.

According to Calciomercato, Leeds United are now interested in RB Salzburg forward Noah Okafor.

 150.
According to the Italian outlet’s website, Leeds are not the only clubs interested, with European giants Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund expected to compete.

 151.
Victor Orta, on the other hand, has solid contacts with the Austrian club, having done business for both Brenden Aaronson and Rasmus Kristensen over the summer.

 152.
This might be very beneficial to Leeds United.

 153.
Waiting for Aaronson to complete the transfer in the summer rather than January developed trust between the two teams, which was later exploited in the Kristensen transaction.

 154.
Not only that, but Okafor could no doubt contact his former teammates and ask what life is like at Leeds FC, with both being given big roles by Jesse Marsch since arriving.

 155.
The 22-year-old has also had a strong start to the season, with four goals in seven league matches and a goal in the Champions League on Tuesday night [06 September].

 156.
All of this bodes well for Leeds.

 157.
Victor Orta always has a large list of targets, but whether it was his fault or not, he failed to bring in what was needed during the summer transfer window.

 158.
Yes, the Spaniard delivered on a number of excellent transactions, but it was evident that Leeds needed a big-name striker and a left-back, and they didn’t get either.

 159.
Wilfried Gnonto did arrive at the end of the window as a panic buy, but he is one for the future, not for right now as Jesse Marsch openly admitted himself.

 160.
Okafor is not only playing, but also scoring in the Champions League against great clubs like AC Milan, and it is time for him to make the transition to the Premier League.

 161.
Would he suit up for Inter Milan or Borussia Dortmund? We have our doubts.

 162.
The door is wide open for a new number nine at Elland Road, and that burden should be welcomed by strikers across Europe, yet they may have the secret weapons to win this race.

 163.
Now it is in the hands of agents, Aaronson and Kristensen.

 204.

Last season, Leeds United escaped relegation to the EFL Championship after winning 2-1 away at Brentford. Having stayed up by the skin of their teeth, the club has had a very busy summer transfer window. They sold two of their main men, Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha, for a combined €106.75 million. Leeds have brought in as many as five men worthy of a place in the starting XI. These are Brenden Aaronson, Luis Sinisterra, Tyler Adams, Rasmus Kristensen and Marc Roca. However, this article will focus on whether Crysencio Summerville, a 20-year-old Dutch winger at the club, should be given a new contract or not.

 205.

 206.
Summerville played only six Premier League games last season for Leeds United for only 125 minutes on the pitch. Given the very little game-time he had, it was not a surprise to see him hit blanks in both goals and assists. However, in his limited time on the pitch, he generated xG of 0.17 per 90. He failed to hit even one shot on target despite generating an xG per shot of 0.15. The Dutchman frequently made himself available inside the attacking penalty area, with 3.44 touches per 90 inside it. This put him in the top 9%. He completed just under 72% of his four dribbles per 90. He was involved in over 13 offensive duels per 90 and nine attacking actions per 90.

 207.

 208.
Summerville could not generate as much xA as his xG, with just 0.02 xA per 90. He attempted only 37 passes per 90, but even then, his accuracy was a woefully low 73.85%. Being a winger, he was not that involved in passing the ball towards the final third. Instead, he received these passes from players in the deep. With 2.87 progressive runs per 90 and crosses per 90 each, the Dutchman was placed in the 91st and 89th percentiles, respectively. Due to his 1.15 smart passes per 90, he ended up in the top 12% of the category.

 209.

 210.
While Summerville is an attacker, his defensive work rate was admirable. He attempted just more than nine defensive actions per 90 and won a whopping 87.5% of them. Despite being only 174 cm in height, he attempted just under three aerial duels per 90, though he failed to win any of them. He won three-eighths of the 4.59 loose ball duels per 90 he contested. His 3.44 recoveries in the opposition’s half put him in the upper third. The Dutchman won 44.44% of his defensive duels, which ranked him in the 99th percentile.

 211.

 212.
Summerville played predominantly as a right-winger in his very little game-time. He produced seven progressive passes, four passes each into the final third and the penalty area, and 14 progressive carries. He also received 13 progressive passes from his teammates. Defensively, he attempted 22 pressures (of which nine were successful) and 11 tackles & interceptions.

 213.
Crysencio Summerville had very little game-time in the first team last season. But in the reserves league, he scored six goals in 13 games for the U23 side. Should Leeds United offer him a new contract, it could go one of two ways: a breakthrough campaign at Elland Road this season or being sold in the future if a sizeable offer comes their way as he is only 20 years old.

 228.

Leeds United barely escaped relegation last season, needing a win on the final matchday to secure their status in the Premier League. They have since lost both Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha to Manchester City and Barcelona, respectively. But the Whites have done a smart rebuild, signing Tyler Adams and Marc Roca from RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich, respectively, to replace Phillips. As for Raphinha’s replacement, they have signed the Colombian Luis Sinisterra from Eredivisie giants, Feyenoord. However, one man who could possibly thrive under Jesse Marsch is not a new incoming transfer, but striker Joe Gelhardt.

 229.

 230.
Gelhardt made 33 appearances for Leeds United last season in all competitions. This included 20 Premier League games where he played for 732 minutes. He scored only two goals at a rate of 0.22 per 90. This is much worse than xG per 90’s prediction of 0.47. He fired off just under 2.5 shots per 90 but could muster only 21.74% of them on target. This is in spite of generating an xG per shot of 0.19, putting him in the upper 17%. He registered four touches in the oppositions’ penalty area per 90, placing him in the upper quartile. He contested nearly 14 offensive duels per 90.

 231.

 232.
In addition to his two goals, Gelhardt provided two assists at a rate of 0.22 per 90. This was slightly higher than xA per 90’s estimation. He was largely anonymous in build-up play, averaging only 14.4 pass attempts per 90 at a woeful pass accuracy of 68.42%. He made only 1.3 progressive runs per 90, placing him in the bottom half among forwards. He also had 0.87 smart passes per 90 and through balls per 90 each, putting him in the upper quartile in both these categories.

 233.

 234.
As seen in the above shot map, Gelhardt took the vast majority of his shots from inside the box. In fact, he attempted only six shots from outside the box. Yet, he could score only twice. He missed at least two fairly big chances in front of goal, which explains his underperformance compared to xG. His number of shots attempted for the season was 22 and only nine of those tested the opposition keepers. This meant that he took nearly 11 shots to score a goal, which is not efficient, to say the least. His average shot distance from goal was 15.8 yards.

 235.
Joe Gelhardt underperformed last season, especially in front of goal. So, he will need to improve his finishing ability. Thankfully, he is aged only 20 and can improve a lot this season. However, one reason he could thrive under Jesse Marsch is his defensive work rate off the ball, as according to FBREF, he ranked very high in attempted pressures per 90 and other defensive actions such as tackles, interceptions and blocks.

 250.

When Leeds United signed Diego Llorente in September 2020, there were some expectations that the Spaniard would be a success at Elland Road. After all, he had three solid seasons at the Anoeta with Real Sociedad. In his first season with the Whites, he played only 1,204 minutes as groin and hamstring injuries forced him to miss 19 games. But last season, with Kalvin Phillips’ lengthy injury, his defensive importance only grew, and he played the most minutes of any centre-back at Leeds. With Jesse Marsch at the helm, Llorente will be hoping to guide the West Yorkshire outfit to safety this season as well.

 251.

 252.
Llorente made 30 appearances in all competitions for Leeds United last season, which included 28 in the Premier League. He scored three goals during his 2,340 minutes on the field. He was fairly active in his passing, completing nearly 39 out of his 45 attempted passes per 90. He was not afraid to progress the ball either as he attempted 5.63 passes into the attacking third per 90. He made just over one progressive run per 90, which placed him just above the median value. The former Real Sociedad man completed nearly 6.5 long balls per 90, comfortably putting him in the upper quintile.

 253.

 254.
Llorente put up over 15 defensive actions per 90, though his success rate of 77.7% put him in the bottom 30% among defenders. He attempted 9.22 defensive duels per 90 and was fairly successful as he had a 27% win rate. Despite standing at 186 cm, he could muster only a 45.4% success rate in aerial duels, which placed him in the bottom quartile. In spite of this, the Spanish man won 63.4% of his loose ball encounters, ranking him in the top 8%. With 11.25 recoveries per 90 to his name, he outranked 86% of the defenders in this category.

 255.

 256.
Llorente won the majority of his duels in the defensive third, with some of them coming in midfield as well. Most of these came on the right-hand side of the defence. He won ground-based defending duels and 50/50s more often than aerial duels. He attempted 13.9 pressures per 90, 4.5 tackles and interceptions per 90, four clearances per 90 and 2.35 blocks per 90.

 257.

 258.
Llorente played mostly as a right-sided centre-back last season. He provided cover for the right-back whenever the latter made advancing and overlapping runs down the flank. He completed 2.69 progressive passes per 90, 2.65 passes into the final third per 90 and 2.15 progressive carries per 90.

 259.
Diego Llorente took almost one full season to fully settle at Leeds United as his ‘minutes played’ jumped from just over 1,200 in 2020-21 to more than 2,300 last season. He will hope to stay injury-free as his defensive presence will be even more important now that Kalvin Phillips has left for Manchester City.

 274.

When Leeds United signed Junior Firpo from Barcelona for €15 million in July 2021, there were big expectations from the 25-year-old to deliver immediately and hit the ground running. However, his first season at Elland Road was anything but good. At best, it could be called average. A combination of injuries and inconsistency was the main reason why the left-back did not perform. The signing turned out to be a bad one for Leeds and to make matters worse, he is set to miss the first one or two months of the season due to a lengthy injury, as per reports.

 275.

 276.
Firpo appeared in 28 matches in his debut campaign for Leeds United, which included 24 in the Premier League. He did not score even once and provided just two assists. He took less than 0.5 shots per 90 and could muster only a pitiful 10% of them on target. The former Spanish youth international, born in the Dominican Republic, registered 1.74 touches in the opposition’s penalty box per 90, putting him in the top 9% among defenders. He attempted 1.3 dribbles per 90 but could complete only ~63% of his take-ons. He contested 3.33 offensive duels per 90 and 3.96 attacking actions per 90.

 277.

 278.
Firpo’s two assists came at a rate of 0.05 per 90, less than the 0.07 xA per 90 estimated. He averaged only 38 attempted passes per 90 at 82.14% pass accuracy. He was only above average as far as progressing the ball was concerned, completing 68.5% of his 5.2 attempted passes into the final third per 90. The left-back made only 1.4 progressive runs per 90 and 1.59 crosses per 90, which put him in the upper third but not by much. However, he completed 0.58 smart passes per 90, placing him in the 94th percentile for defenders.

 280.
Despite attempting more than 15 defensive actions per 90 and 10 defensive duels per 90, Firpo’s win rate in both left a lot to be desired. In the former, his win rate ranked in the bottom 6% and in the latter, he was firmly placed in the bottom third. He won 56.4% of his aerial duels, though he attempted only 2.66 per 90. The former Barcelona player recovered exactly half of the loose ball duels he contested. However, the biggest problem he created was his rashness and lack of temperament as he committed nearly two fouls per 90 and earned an astonishing 11 yellow cards.

 282.
Firpo was mostly active on the left flank for Leeds. Primarily, he was an attack-minded full-back, as shown by his numbers. He completed 3.89 progressive passes per 90, 3.16 passes into the final third per 90, nearly one pass into the penalty box per 90, 5.11 progressive carries per 90 and 1.47 carries into the final third per 90. Defensively, the 25-year-old attempted 18.7 pressures per 90, 5.58 tackles & interceptions per 90, 2.47 clearances per 90 and 1.95 blocks per 90.

 283.
With Junior Firpo set to miss approximately the first one or two months of the season, Leeds United are looking to sign a left-back as per the latest reports. Even after he returns from the injury, there needs to be a healthy competition for the full-backs as it can only help the team.
