42.
Masai Mara is one of the most famous safari destinations in the world, renowned for its abundant wildlife, spectacular scenery, and annual wildebeest migration. But did you know that there are also some hidden gems in Masai Mara that offer a more off-the-beaten-path experience? These lesser-known areas are perfect for travelers who want to explore the wild side of Masai Mara, away from the crowds and the tourist traps. Let us introduce you to some the hidden gems in Masai Mara that will make your safari unforgettable. We will also compare and contrast their features and highlights, and help you choose the ones that suit your interests and preferences.

43.
44.
45.
46.
Mara Naboisho Conservancy

47.
48.
49.
50.
Mara Naboisho Conservancy is a private wildlife reserve that borders the Masai Mara National Reserve. It covers an area of 210 square kilometers and hosts a variety of wildlife, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, zebras, and more. The conservancy is also home to the largest population of lions in the Greater Mara ecosystem, with over 100 individuals. What makes Mara Naboisho Conservancy a hidden gem is its exclusivity and intimacy. There are only a handful of luxury lodges in the area, which means fewer vehicles and fewer visitors. This allows you to enjoy a more authentic and immersive safari experience, with less impact on the environment and the wildlife. You can also enjoy some special activities and experiences in the conservancy, such as walking safaris, night drives, fly camping, and cultural visits to the local Maasai communities.

51.
52.
53.
54.
Olare Motorogi Conservancy

55.
56.
57.
58.
Olare Motorogi Conservancy is another private wildlife reserve that borders the Masai Mara National Reserve. It covers an area of 140 square kilometers and boasts a high density of wildlife, especially predators. You can expect to see lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, and more in this conservancy. You can also spot some rare and endangered species, such as black rhinos, wild dogs, and pangolins. What makes Olare Motorogi Conservancy a hidden gem is its cultural significance and historical background. The conservancy is named after two Maasai clans, Olare and Motorogi, who used to live in conflict over land and resources. In 2006, they decided to join forces and create a conservation area that would benefit both the wildlife and the people. The conservancy is now a model of community-based conservation and sustainable tourism. You can learn more about the history and culture of this area by visiting some of the local villages or participating in some of the cultural activities offered by the lodges.

59.
60.
61.
62.
Lemek Conservancy

63.

It covers an area of 70 square kilometers and hosts a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, antelopes, and more. What makes Lemek Conservancy a hidden gem is its unique flora and fauna that make it stand out from other areas in Masai Mara. The conservancy has a mix of habitats, such as open plains, acacia woodlands, riverine forests, and swamps. This creates a rich biodiversity that attracts different types of animals and plants. You can also find some species that are not commonly seen in other parts of Masai Mara, such as colobus monkeys, serval cats, caracals, and orchids.

67.
68.
69.
70.
Loita Hills

71.
72.
73.
74.
The second hidden gem is Loita Hills, a range of forested hills that lies east of Masai Mara. Loita Hills is a sacred place for the Maasai people, who have lived in harmony with nature for centuries. Here, you can immerse yourself in the rich and vibrant culture of the Maasai, learning about their traditions, beliefs, and way of life. 84.
85.
86.
Sand River

Sand River is a scenic and serene destination that offers a different perspective of Masai Mara. Here, you can enjoy the tranquility and beauty of the riverine ecosystem, which attracts a variety of birds and animals. 332.
Masai Mara National Reserve is one of the most famous and popular wildlife destinations in Africa, and for good reason. It is home to a stunning variety of animals, from the majestic Big Five to the elusive leopards, from the speedy cheetahs to the massive elephant herds. In this blog post, we will explore some of the must-see wildlife encounters in Masai Mara that will make your trip a memorable one.

333.
334.
335.
336.
Masai Mara National Reserve is a large game reserve in southwestern Kenya, covering an area of 1,510 square kilometers. It is named after the Maasai people, the traditional inhabitants of the area, and their word for “spotted”, which describes the landscape of rolling hills and acacia trees. Masai Mara is part of the Greater Mara Ecosystem, which also includes the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The reserve is famous for its abundant and diverse wildlife, especially the large predators and herbivores that roam its plains.

343.
344.
One of the most spectacular wildlife phenomena in the world is the Great Migration, which involves millions of wildebeest and zebra moving across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grass and water. The migration is a continuous cycle that follows the seasonal rains and patterns. The best time to witness the Great Migration in Masai Mara is from July to October, when the wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River, facing crocodiles, lions, and other dangers along the way. This is a thrilling and dramatic sight that you don’t want to miss.

506.
507.
Interacting: Lions communicate with each other through vocalizations such as roars, growls, and purrs, as well as body language such as rubbing, licking, and grooming. They also show affection, playfulness, and dominance through these interactions.

509.
510.
511.
Conserving: Lions face many threats such as habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and diseases. They also compete with other predators such as hyenas, cheetahs, and leopards for food and territory. It is important to conserve lion populations in Masai Mara by supporting conservation efforts and respecting their space.

528.

529.
Hunting: Cheetahs hunt mostly during the day, when they can spot their prey from a distance and avoid competition with other predators. They usually target small to medium-sized herbivores such as gazelles, impalas, and hares. They stalk their prey until they are within 50 to 100 meters, then sprint towards them and trip them with their claws. They kill their prey by biting their throat or neck.

530.
531.
532.
533.
Speed: Cheetahs have a unique anatomy that allows them to run fast. They have long legs, a flexible spine, a large heart and lungs, a small head and ears, and a long tail that acts as a rudder. They also have black tear marks on their face that reduce glare from the sun and help them focus on their prey.

534.
535.
536.
537.
Sprints: Cheetahs can only maintain their top speed for a few seconds, as they use up a lot of energy and overheat quickly. They need to rest and cool down after each hunt, which makes them vulnerable to losing their kill to other predators or scavengers. You can witness cheetah sprints and hunts in Masai Mara if you are lucky and patient.

While this migration attracts the highest number of visitors to the Masai Mara and Serengeti, these two parks are home to some of Africa’s highest population of lions and one of the best places to see them. Unlike other wildlife reserves in Africa that are seasonal, game viewing in the Serengeti and Masai Mara is fabulous all year round.

706.
The Masai Mara is a smaller extension of Serengeti National Park covering an area of 1,530 sq. km with a varied landscape made up of open plains, acacia woodland and riverine forest on the river banks of Mara and Talek rivers.

707.
708.
709.
710.
The Serengeti with a bigger size covers an area of 14,763 sq. km of vast plains broken by kopjes (rocky outcrops), acacia Savannah, Savannah woodland and riverine forest. Northern Serengeti differs with a hilly landscape with thick scrub and forests.

711.
712.
713.
714.
The smaller size of the Masai Mara gives it an advantage of being able to explore the park with a minimum of 3 to 4 days whereas exploring the Serengeti’s varied zones split into the Northern, Western, Central, and Southern may require a minimum of a week.

715.
716.
717.
718.
That said, most Serengeti safaris are focused on Central Serengeti (Seronera Area) known to be rewarding all year round. The rest of the regions in the Serengeti are visited based on the movement of the migration. Western Serengeti is a fine base for June to July, The north is rewarding from August to November whereas the Southern plains are a fine base for the calving season for Dec to April.

723.
724.
725.
726.
Many will argue that the great migration is best witnessed in Masai Mara National Reserve when over 1.8 million herds are spread on the smaller area of the Masai Mara. However, please note that the migration is seasonal and relatively spends shorter time in The Masai Mara (July to September) as compared to the Serengeti (the rest of the year).

727.
728.
729.
730.
That said, Serengeti National Park is known to be the home to the Great Migration, the herds spend most of the year here (outside late July to September) and if you plan a safari focused on the migration, depending on your planned time to visit, the Serengeti offers most of the action and is arguably the best place for it.

731.
732.
733.
734.
Safaris

735.
736.
737.
738.
Safari to both the Serengeti and The Masai Mara is captivating; there is nothing more rewarding than being exposed to open plains greatly gifted by thousands of herd wildlife, a huge number of big cats, and the predators where even catching them hunting is common. Whereas safaris to both these parks are world-class; the cost for a safari in the Masai Mara is less compared to what you will get for a similar (same number of days) in Serengeti National Park.

739.
740.
741.
742.
If you plan to visit any of the two parks on a tight budget; the Masai Mara in Kenya should be your priority. Unlike the Serengeti where extra fees like concession fees apply, safaris to the Masai Mara do not include these fees. To note more; accessing the Serengeti is limited to a 4×4 safari land cruiser (jeep) which is quite costly to hire. The Masai Mara is open to a cheaper 4×4 safari van alternative which is the ideal mode of transport for visitors on a budget. That said, The Masai Mara offers cheaper safaris as compared to the Serengeti National Park

743.
744.
745.
746.
Comparing the Masai Mara and Serengeti; whichever of the two parks you will consider visiting, you will be welcomed to one of Africa’s best Safari destinations. There is no such thing as a trip not meeting up to your expectations.

747.

Popularly known for the existence of huge numbers of lions easily seen here, The Masai Mara is also the home to the famous Great Wildebeest Migration as you might have heard of it before.

773.
774.
Planning to visit the Masai Mara? Here are a few main points to consider to set up your dream safari and make the most of it.

775.
776.
777.
778.
Consider Booking through a Tour Operator

779.
780.
781.
782.
Planning and booking your holiday to Kenya can be done through a Kenya Ground Tour Operator, an international Agent, or a Lodge/ Camp in the Park you intend to visit. Booking through a tour operator has proven to be the most convenient and cost-friendly way to plan and book a safari to Kenya’s Masai Mara. Tour operators offer an all-inclusive cost for your trip whereby you do not have to worry about any groundwork but rather fly into Kenya to take on the safari of your dreams planned exactly to your wishes. As a tip: Keep in mind that booking through a ground operator in Kenya will cost you less as compared to booking through an overseas international agent. These agents contract ground Kenya operators who will handle your trip thereby contacting a ground operator directly will save you some money. Booking through a lodge or Camp in the Masai Mara is costly since such a trip will require you to fly into the Park with usually no option to drive there.

783.
784.
785.
786.

787.
788.
789.
790.
Upon landing, you are picked up by your guide to transfer to the lodge or camp and from here you will enjoy a safari limited to 2 game activities each day. Please note that you might have to share a vehicle with some other guests at the lodge or camp. Are you looking for an entirely private safari? A Kenya ground tour operator will weave a private safari best, most operators own private 4×4 safari vehicles that they issue out to guests that have booked. This vehicle will be yours exclusively throughout your trip with a guide (usually English-speaking) that will be in charge of showing you around the entire trip. Not to say that group joining tours to the Masai Mara are impossible, but if wish to make the best out of your trip and you can afford the luxury of a private tour, it is advisable that you book one.

791.
792.
793.
794.
Pick out a favorable Season to Visit

795.
796.
797.
798.
The Masai Mara can be visited any time of the year whenever you can. With the experience of 10 years operating safaris to the Masai Mara and Kenya at large, I can confirm that every month is okay to plan a successful safari that will meet your exact wishes. Picking out a good time for you to visit mainly depends on what you are looking forward to seeing on your visit and secondly, what type of trip you are looking for. Late July to early September is the time to witness the annual wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara. This is also the high season in Kenya’s Safari Parks which sees the highest number of visitors in the year drawn by the dry weather with scattered little or no rainfall.

799.
800.
801.
802.

803.
804.
805.
806.
December, January, February, March, and October are also good months to visit the Masai Mara if you are looking for dry months with little rainfall, but please note that at this time of the year the migration is out of sight as the herds have returned back to Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. April, May, June, and November lie in what is known as the low season in Kenya’s National parks. These months are traditionally wet months associated with the highest level of rainfall in a year. Much as these months may not favor safari to the Masai Mara due to the chances of rain, the fewer visitors at this time of the year enjoy the exclusiveness of witnessing major sightings with a few other safari vehicles in the park. This is also a good time to find the best deals for a trip to Kenya and the Masai Mara.

807.
808.
809.
810.
Please note that as much as these months are traditionally characterized as stated above, there has been a shift in seasons over the years due to global warming that has caused traditionally dry months to come with traces of rainfall and so have wet months come around with traces of sun shining most.

811.
812.
813.
814.
Book your trip in Advance

815.
816.
817.
818.
It is never too early to book your safari, in fact, the earlier you do it the better. A safari to the Masai Mara targeted for the high season months should be booked early in advance. This is to ensure that you are booked for your lodge/camp and safari activities on time. It is common that good accommodations get fully booked as early as four months or more in advance of the dates you plan to visit. Not to say that urgent bookings are not possible, in fact, booking on short notice is very much possible in the low season since these months do not have many visitors.

819.
820.
821.
822.

823.
824.
825.
826.
Whilst the world taking a turn that a pandemic or any other uncertainty might occur to affect already booked travel plans. The good news is that the travel industry has become more flexible to cater to uncertainties. A Reputable Tour operator should be able to allow for bookings to be postponed for a favorable time in the future when you are able to travel at no extra cost. This is a policy we have at Masai Mara Holidays Ltd as so should any other reputable firm in the travel industry.

834.
Nairobi which is Kenya’s Capital City is the base for all Trips to Kenya’s Major tourist attractions. You will have to fly in and out of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi for most safaris to Masai Mara and Kenya at large. Considering a night in Nairobi upon arrival is highly recommended to ensure you get over the jetlag that might have come with your arrival flight. This will enable you to rest in preparation for your safari that can start the next day. One thing you will not like is feeling exhausted at the start of a safari due to starting a safari immediately upon landing. Most safaris are associated with long drives in transit to the parks and on game drives.

835.

840.
841.
842.
Equally, a night in Nairobi after the safari can also come in handy for you to get more rest before you board your departure flight home. With more time, exploring some bit of Nairobi City is also recommended for a city blessed with unique attractions including the giraffe center, Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and Nairobi National Park among other attractions. Short excursions to visit most of these attractions are easily possible to arrange on short notice.

848.
849.
850.
Have you seen photos on the Internet of wildlife in close proximity to camps and lodges? Well, this will contribute to an experience never to be forgotten on your safari. Most Parks in Kenya and the Masai Mara are served by a number of different accommodation options but key differences will be in the level of comfort, price range, and location. “The best-located camps are lodges” is information known by your tour operators and most will ensure their clients are booked at one of these accommodation options. For a safari booked in advance, there is a high chance that your tour operator will place you at an accommodation with a good location.

858.
Please note there are also accommodations located outside the parks (most budget and midrange lodges and camps) This means that each morning, you will have to drive a distance to the park gate and into the Park within which time visitors booked in lodge and camps in the park are already enjoying the peak action of the early morning. Similarly, while you drive out of the park in the evening, the lucky visitors take this time to extend the game viewing to enjoy the peak action of sun dawn in the park

877.

878.
The Masai Mara located in Kenya is one of Africa’s most popular National Parks and also the home to the famous Great Migration shared with the adjacent Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. The Masai Mara undoubtedly offers breathe taking wild game from the big five and huge prides of lions to the millions of herd wildlife to include zebras, wildebeests, topis among other wildlife species. It is common that when first-time travelers to Africa’s wild safari in Kenya’s Masai Mara start looking for safari packages and quotes, they often feel like Masai Mara safaris are expensive. What they soon or later realize is that most safari programs are all-inclusive tours that cover all meals, accommodation, game safari activities, transportation, airport transfer, taxes, park fees, and flights in some cases. I would like to compare this to an ordinary trip you would take anywhere around the world but this time you are fully in charge of your trip and getting to pay every cost by yourself but when you add up the credit card bills and follow up all tickets, rentals, all meals among other costs, you then have a fair comparison with the relative cost of a safari package to the Masai Mara.

879.
880.
881.
882.

The cost per day for a safari in the Masai Mara is most dependent upon how comfortable you wish to travel (the level of accommodation), the type of transportation used, whether you are on a private safari or a group tour, and what time of the year you are visiting. This is why you will find that most safari operators to the Masai Mara often ask for the level of comfort you are looking for before any immediate step to plan your trip. Comfort level could be budget, midrange, or luxury, with these options, you are placed at different class accommodations for your safari. The cost of an all-inclusive Masai Mara tour can range anywhere from USD 150 to USD 250 per day per person sharing a room for a budget tour and USD 250 to 400 per day per person sharing room for a midrange tour whereas a luxury Safari to the Masai Mara can set you anywhere from USD 450 upwards per day per person sharing room. These prices are not fixed and might vary from one safari operator to another but a reputable agency should set you anywhere around those figures.

883.
884.
885.
886.

Much as these figures may differ, when comparing safaris from different operators, it is very important to be keen about what is included and not included. It is common that you will meet very attractive and to some point “not believable” prices on the Internet, please keep in mind that some companies use what we consider a sales ploy by listing very low prices then separately list some essential costs such as activities, breakfast or park entrance separately which can increase the overall cost of the entire safari by another 30% and when you eventually add up all the costs, you may later realize that they are not offering value for money compared to safaris offered by other companies.

887.
888.
889.
890.

If you are dealing directly with a hotel in the Masai Mara for your booking, be sure to note that taxes and breakfast are included when comparing costs for hotels as there is a chance some offered rates may not include either, this again could easily make a difference of 20 to 35% on the price. To further note; most presented costs of accommodation at camps and lodges in The Masai Mara do not include game drives or other activities and park entrances, should you need these included, ensure to request for a game package which in most cases covers all these costs on top of accommodation and meals.

988.
Safari in The Masai Mara is one of the most sought experiences by thousands of safari-goers across the world. The Masai Mara located in southern Kenya is arguably the best animal kingdom in EastAfrica and Africa at large. The Mara boasts of the big five, huge numbers of predators including; lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyenas. Other wildlife includes; elephants, Buffaloes, hippos, wildebeests, rhinos, among others. It also cannot go without saying that this blissful animal kingdom is home to the great wildebeest migration, a seasonal movement of millions of grazer herds from adjacent Serengeti National Park in Tanzania to Kenya’s Masai Mara.

989.
990.
991.
992.
It is often that we get so many questions from our visitors to The Masai Mara concerned about their safety from the wild animals in The Masai Mara while on a safari. Safety from animals on safaris is guaranteed if you are to follow the list of given safety guidelines that govern wildlife activities in the Masai Mara. It is not in any safari operator’s interest to lose a visitor, so guidelines were set to ensure that they don’t.

993.
994.
995.
996.
While on a safari in the Masai Mara, your safari driver/ guide will always look out for you and inform you of the rules. It is common that many travelers opt for self-drive safaris which is a brilliant idea but over the years has come with many challenges, many of these visitors appear in the park without guidance and with the least knowledge on how to conduct game drives or even finding their way around the park. We do not recommend this type of safari, ensure to acquire the service and guidance of a professional guide that will be in charge of your safari, and also ensure your trip in the Masai Mara is conducted under the set guidelines.

997.
998.
999.
1000.
Visiting the Masai Mara, you will once the sun has gone down be asked what time you want to have your dinner, then told to wait in your room or tent until that time when a Maasai or armed guard will be sent to pick you up from your room then escort you to the dining place and then back again after dinner. Some visitors do find it tedious whereas others consider it an exciting ritual. But given that you are in an unfenced wilderness full of wildlife and predators free to roam at will, it is advisable to follow rules and move around with an escort after dark. Depending on the accommodation you will opt for, some do afford the luxury of telephones whereas others have a simple whistle for emergencies.

1001.
1002.
1003.
1004.
The time to be alert for potential dangers in the wilderness of the Masaai Mara is while out for bush walks or walking safaris and to a lesser extent horseback safaris. Whatever the case you will always be with an experienced armed ranger, guide, or Maasai Tracker. It is absolutely very important to always follow their instructions carefully at all times. It is no place to let your guard down not even for a single moment. There have been incidences in the past where tourists have been killed, much more common incidences are with elephants, so never become too lax about anticipating any potential danger while out in the wilderness. Some of these incidences actually involve victims that have plenty of experience in the bush.

1005.
1006.
1007.
1008.
Under no circumstances should you ever wander off alone, be it in the daylight, and when for a moment you need to stage off to use a toilet or take a photograph, ensure to inform your guide as these are experienced individuals well versed with the lesser animal occupied areas of the Masai Mara. If an animal is to chance on you without the aid of a ranger or guide, the chance of survival is close to zero. Avoid swimming in rivers or lakes unless given a go-ahead by your guide, hippos are herbivores but highly territorial species known to the biggest killers after mosquitoes. Always ensure to treat wildlife with respect, and encourage your guide to keep a safe distance when viewing and tracking animals. All in all most precautions to look out for on a safari in the Masai Mara are actually linked to common sense

1009.
1010.
1011.
1012.
The Masai Mara is one of the remaining best-kept Animal kingdoms in the world, if you can visit, it is a chance not to be missed. 1028.
Home to much more than just safaris and the pyramids, Africa is both the second-largest and second-most-populous continent on Earth. While beautiful beaches and rugged cliffs line its long coastline, its vast interior encompasses everything from mountains and deserts to tropical rainforests and the Nile river. Home to a vast array of different cultures and languages, Africa offers an intoxicating mix of old and new, as many of its age-old traditions and customs still survive to this day. We have compiled a list of the best countries to visit in Africa from 2021 to 2022.

1029.
1030.
1031.
1032.
10. Namibia

1033.
1034.
1035.
1036.
Nestled away in the southwest of the continent, Namibia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in Africa. This is because much of it is made up of arid, desolate landscapes and the unforgiving Namib Desert. Formerly a German colony, it only gained its independence from South Africa in 1990, so some colonial-era architecture can still be seen in its capital, Windhoek. Most people, however, visit for its brilliant national parks, which are home to breathtakingly beautiful landscapes and incredible wildlife. In Etosha National Park, for instance, you can catch glimpses of lions, elephants, and black rhinos roaming around the Kalahari. Another popular destination among tourists is the Skeleton Coast, which has lots of spooky shipwrecks dotted along its dangerous Atlantic Ocean coastline.

1037.
1038.
1039.
1040.
9. Tunisia

1041.
1042.
1043.
1044.
Long a popular tourist destination, Tunisia can be found wedged in between Algeria and Libya on North Africa’s Mediterranean coastline. Due to its fabulous warm weather and inviting beaches, lots of Europeans come here to lounge on its golden sands and swim in the sea. There is much more to Tunisia than just sun, sea, and sand however: the country is also littered with impressive archaeological sites that date back millennia. This is because, throughout its history, it has been ruled by everyone from the Carthaginians, Romans, and Ottomans to the Arabs and later on French. Of its many historical sights, the stunning Roman amphitheater in El Jem and the remnants and ruins of Carthage are the undoubted highlights.

1052.
Home to not only the continent’s tallest mountain range and the source of the Nile, land-locked Uganda also borders the largest lake in Africa. While its tourism industry and infrastructure are quite undeveloped in comparison with neighboring Kenya and Tanzania, this makes its spectacular landscapes all the more exciting to explore. Long overlooked by visitors to the continent due to its tumultuous and tragic past, Uganda is slowly regaining its title of the ‘Pearl of Africa.’ This is in large part because it is one of only three countries in the world where you can see mountain gorillas in the wild. Seeing the majestic creatures up close in the cloud rainforests is an amazing experience, and is simply a must when in Uganda. Our carefully designed safari packages to Uganda offer you gorilla trekking Safaris, wildlife, and sightseeing adventure safaris. 1286.
The Great wildebeest Migration in Africa takes place in Kenya and Tanzania within the prominent National Parks of Masai Mara and Serengeti National Parks where gathering large herds of wildebeests, zebras and other grazers follow instinct then start to move in large herds, it is truly one of life’s greatest occurrences. The Wildebeest migration is highlighted by river crossings, normally this occurs when the various sizes of herds gather at a river and when one starts to cross the rest follow, safety numbers quite overly and everyone makes it to the other side or even better no shoving pushings, one after the other they all just stroll across the river to continue feeding on the other side because as you know the grass is always greener on the other side. It is the epitome of an African safari seeing parts of the migration when herds of 1.5 million wildebeest and over 500,000 zebra migrate between Serengeti in Tanzania and Masai Mara in Kenya. It is certainly an unforgettable experience however even when you don’t see the migration these two parks definitely deserve every bit of the international scene.

1287.
1288.
1289.
1290.
While on a game drive in Masai Mara (August 2020) something extra ordinary happened, we quickly zoomed into the area close to the border between Kenya’s Masai Mara in the north and Tanzania’s Serengeti in the South. At this point two rivers join; the Sand River running from east to west and the Mara River coming from the north to the South. Once they meet, they continue westwards to Lake Victoria. We were returning from a morning safari game drive in the western part of the park and had just crossed the bridge over the Mara River, as we looked towards the river we saw a relatively large herd of wildebeests congregating at the river and we swung into the parking lot where one is allowed to get out in order to have a better look at the river, as we got out, there was a scene that made us. The large herd of wildebeests decided to cross the river and aim for a specific gap in the sand bank of the opposite side. However they did not keep the speed of the river in mind sweeping them from left to right and therefore missing their target completely. At this point they were facing a vertical solid sand bank which was impossible to climb so they were now all swept downstream and had no choice but to return to the side they just came from. The reason why they could not continue downstream to reach flatter ground to exit is because there was a pot of hippos lying in a long line preventing them from coming down further.

1291.
1292.
1293.
1294.
This was just the start of a nightmare because wildebeests are herd animals like sheep, one follows the other one in front without really thinking of the consequences of that action. To our surprise as soon as they got out of the hippo and crocodile infested water they would jump straight back in again to do the same pointless circle once more. At this point their problems are just about to get worse when the hippo could not take it anymore and decided to attack these intruders as you may know hippos a vegetarian’s so they will not kill something to eat however they are extremely territorial and will attack anything coming into their path and when you come face-to-face with a hippo, the razor sharp tusks up to one foot long will be probably your last memory, these very tusks rip trees like paper and leave the victims bleeding to death if not already crushed by these gigantic joists. It was at this point that the wildebeests were starting to realize the situation however many continued with this deadly game of circular swimming whereas others had second thoughts and returned the same way that went in. Sadly some animals were so tired that they would get swept downstream into the line of waiting crocodiles and these poor soul got bitten not once but twice before making it to the bank. At long last some good news came when some of them found the gap on the opposite side and others found the flatter ground where we were standing. During all this chaos of the crossing, animals got separated, mothers were calling out for their missing calves, calves made it to the other side only to wonder where their mothers were. Once again the worst was told to be witnessed so many bodies were left floating and these were not the backs of hippos but rather drowned wildebeests, within minutes We counted a hundred floating carcasses. Many people think that crocodiles kill most wildebeests during these crossings but the fact is it is deadly crossings like these that cost many more lives. Some of the remaining herd of wildebeests stood in the dangerous river and eventually collapsed.

1295.
1296.
1297.
1298.
It can be heartbreaking and disturbing to witness events like these, it’s like a lion kill, at Masai Mara Holidays we often witness visitors that want to see a lion kill only until they see a lion kill. What we often hear is the cycle of life but one can’t help to feel very sorry for the victim. This reminds us always that life’s end is always brutal does not matter how it comes. From a human perspective what does matter though is not to focus on the things we cannot change like the inevitable death but on the things that we can change like life we can ensure to protect, these wildlife locations like Serengeti and Masai Mara for life, we can spread the word that Africa is an exceptional destination with friendly people stunning scenery and unmatched wildlife and you can enjoy all her splendor just by coming here on a safari and becoming part of a movement to protect our natural resources for generations to come long after you and I have left.

1318.
Following the ongoing Pandemic, Kenya had closed its borders and suspended flights in and out of the country in March. The good news to all travelers is that Kenya resumed international flights to 30 destinations, initially there were 27 destinations that were announced but due to demand, these destinations were increased to 30.This move towards easing the effects of the corona virus on flight was undertaken and is to be monitored, should the demand increase with time then possibly the traffic and destinations could be increased as well. According to our first Masai Mara Holidays group of clients that landed Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, they walked into a totally new airport environment due the new measures that have been put in place; less traffic, wearing masks full time, observing social distance and carrying proof of being tested for Covid 19 before travel.

Unlike the usual crowd within the Park, the number of tourists is just moderate enough to have a spectacular game drive. Throughout the scenic drive to Masai Mara National drive, we emphasize Covid 19 Safety guidelines should be followed; wearing full time face masks being the Essential rule, we also make sure our guests sanitize regularly.

We enjoyed lunch served at the restaurant with well distanced tables in respect of the social distancing Covid 19 guidelines. After lunch, we headed out for our first game drive in the Mara, the experience was adventurous; we came across a group of lions in our first 30 minutes of game viewing which was later followed buy seeing all the big five except the white Rhinos. Having enjoyed 3 hours in the beautiful Mara witnessing wildlife in the background of the tropical African sunset, we returned to accommodation for dinner and overnight stay. Waking up to day 2 of our Safari which was a full day Masai Mara experience combined with endless game drives and a Masai cultural tour we summed up the adventure and returned back to Nairobi
