Колись вони виконували роль опорних пунктів у фортифікаційних спорудах. Наприклад, у 80-х рр. XVII ст. на пагорбі в одному з віддалених фортів Монреаля під назвою Сенневіль був побудований міцний кам’яний вітряк, який одночасно був і сторожовою вежею. Він мав спеціальні бійниці для мушкетів, а також особливе пристосування для виливання гарячої рідини на ворогів.
