115.
The Kiss of Shame is a fantastic analog tape degradation plugin originally developed ten years ago by Eros Marcello and friends. At the time, however, it was never finished or released. Developer Matthijs Hollemans has dug up the code as part of his “plugin archeology project”, updated it to JUCE 7, and got The Kiss of Shame running again on current systems.

 116.
According to the developers, TKOS was one of the first tape emulations to realistically model the instability of the magnetic particles in the tape. It also emulates things like lubricant loss, deformation, and even reel expansion and contraction. With this level of detail, it’s great for bringing your tracks to life through the subtle inconsistencies of slightly degraded analog tape.

 118.
The Kiss of Shame not only lets you adjust the type and age of the tape, but also the environment in which it was stored. The big Shame knob in the center adds artifacts like drift, wow, and flutter. There’s also a hiss control, a switchable print-through emulation, as well as a blend knob for adding just the right amount of effect. Awesome!

 135.
Like most transient shapers, Transient allows you to adjust the time and gain for both the attack and release phases. This makes it easy to shape the punch and body of drum tracks, for example. In addition to this, Transient offers a clipper with adjustable hardness.

 151.
Band Saturator Free by Bansaw Crown is a free saturation plugin with a choice of three modes (or “flavors”, as the developer puts it). Use it on single tracks, drums, vocals, or even the entire mix. In addition to the saturation stage, the plugin offers a sweepable pre/post filter with resonance. Moreover, there’s also a hard or soft clipper for an extra helping of punchiness. If you like it, you can upgrade to Band Saturator Pro ($39.99), which adds four additional flavors and adjustable oversampling.

 278.
Dell G16 7630: Specifications

 279.
There was only one unit that I could find available at the time of writing this review, and it shares my review unit’s specifications. They are as follows:

 280.

 281.
CPU: Intel Core i9-13900HX

 282.
RAM: 32GB / 4800MHz

 283.
Graphics: RTX 4070 GPU

 284.
Display: 16-inch 2560×1600 QHD+ LCD, 240Hz refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, 3ms response time, ComfortView Plus low blue light, Nvidia G-Sync

 285.
Storage: 1TB PCIe NVMe Gen 4 SSD

 286.
Webcam: HD 720p camera with single arrange digital mic

 287.
Connectivity: Thunderbolt 4 port, 3x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, HDMI 2.1 port, RJ45 Ethernet port, 3.5mm audio jack

 288.
Networking: Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2

 289.
Battery capacity: 84WHrs

 290.
Dimensions: 14.05 x 11.37 x 1.01 inches

 291.
Weight: 6.59 pounds (2.99kg)

 292.
Cost: $1,737 on Amazon

 293.

 294.
Dell G16 7630: Design and build

 295.
The Dell G16 7630 is unashamedly a laptop for gamers that like a large space to play on. Its generous dimensions measure 14.05 x 11.37 x 1.01 inches, so it has a desktop replacement feel to it.

 296.
The chassis features an aluminum cover that makes it sturdier than if it were just made of plastic, but I did notice a bit of give there compared to laptops with solid CNC-milled aluminum chassis. The lid is similar, in that it will flex with firm pressure, but not with moderate pressure.

 297.
The display is a sight to behold. It may be only 16 inches on the diagonal, but its16:10 aspect ratio means you benefit from extra vertical space than in the laptop’s forbears. It gives the illusion you’re using an even larger laptop. That’s helped along by very thin left and right bezels that make every inch of screen space a prize to savor.

 298.

 299.

 300.
Playing games like Battlefield I and Cyberpunk 2077 was a real pleasure — my frame rates were high enough to stay competitive with the best players…

 301.

 302.

 303.
The top and bottom bezels are a lot thicker than the sides, especially the bottom bezel which sits atop a tall hinge. That’s a fact I was very happy for, since it meant I could look almost straight on at the screen without having to crane my neck downwards.

 304.
As to styling, the Dell G16 7630 eschews gamer-centric touches like RGB logos, or flashy Tron lights like the kind you’ll find in Alienware laptops, in favor of a simple Dell logo on the lid instead. I wasn’t unhappy about that since it meant the G16 7630 was one of those rare gaming laptops I could use in the office without anyone blinking an eye.

 305.
At least that was the case when the laptop was fully charged. When it was time to charge it, the huge 330W power brick was kind of a giveaway — it’s probably the chunkiest and biggest charging brick I’ve seen.

 306.
My review unit was a smart Nightshade Black color, which has a kind of charcoal hue. It also blended in nicely with my office environment.

 307.
Dell G16 7630: Keyboard and trackpad

 308.
The keyboard’s single-zone RGB backlighting was a brilliant blue color on startup, which was quite mesmerizing to see. The keyboard is full-sized and has a useful key layout for gamers, including full-sized arrow keys and a collection of media shortcuts down the right-hand side.

 334.
The laptop also sports a Game Shift Key that lets you change and maximize the laptop’s fan speeds for heavy tasks. The ADSF keys are outlined by a white border, which gives the keyboard the battle station look many gamers like.

 335.
Unsurprisingly for a laptop this size, the keys feel a bit mushy, but they fire off rapidly and with a satisfying low audible click. They are also nicely sized for my medium sized fingers — spacious but not trampoline-sized.

 336.
One hitch is the trackpad’s smallness. It plays second fiddle to the G16 7630’s keyboard and could do with an extra half inch in each direction. Its clicks are nevertheless fast, and the trackpad tracks well, so it’s not a total loss.

 337.
Dell G16 7630: Connectivity and audio

 338.
A useful assortment of ports line the G16 7630’s flanks, allowing me to plug in my normal array of peripherals. There’s a Thunderbolt 4 port for transferring my essential game files at a quick speed of up to 40Gbps and an ethernet port for when I want the lowest latency in games.

 339.
The laptop’s Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth functionality are also snappy — although, Wi-Fi 6 is rapidly becoming an older standard now, with laptops like the 2024 Razer Blade 16 now sporting the updated Wi-Fi 7 standard.

 340.
The Dell G16 7630 is a large laptop and it projects sound really well in a large room. The laptop’s two speakers are well tuned for mid-tones, so you get a nice neutral sound in games. I only noticed slight vibrations at higher volumes. Dolby Atmos support gives the audio an appealing immersive quality.

 341.
Dell G16 7630: Display and webcam

 342.
I made a promise to myself when the 2024 Razer Blade 16 came out that I wouldn’t play games in 2650x1600p with anything less than a 240Hz refresh rate. Thankfully my Dell G16 7630 came with the same refresh rate and resolution combination, which made for really fast and smooth game action.

 343.
Indeed, playing games like Battlefield I and Cyberpunk 2077 was a real pleasure — my frame rates were high enough to stay competitive with the best players. The screen resolution was also very detailed, but I’ve seen richer colors on OLED displays. Still, the Dell G16 7630’s 100 percent DCI-P3 color display produces a good enough picture to look bright and texture-rich.

 344.
The laptop’s brightness was also never an issue. I measured a peak brightness of 497 nits, which I used to my advantage to keep the display visible in very bright rooms of my house.

 345.
The 720p webcam impressed me less than the display. It’s adequate for chats and meetings, but some images came out looking a little orange at times.

 346.
A single microphone array also didn’t do my voice much justice in game chats. The sound lost some detail at different moments, which made me sound a little robotic.

 347.
Dell G16 7630: Gaming performance

 348.
The Dell G16 7630 features a fast high-end Intel i9-13900HX processor made for gaming. It belongs to the Raptor Lake family, and sports 24 cores and 32 threads and a maximum turbo frequency of 5.4GHz.

 349.
Compared to the older Alder Lake CPUs, this ripper has a more efficient P-Core microarchitecture and larger caches. It also supports faster DDR5 RAM (up to 5,600MHz), so it’s really designed to shred in games.

 350.
To test its performance, I first ran the Cinebench Multi-Threaded benchmark. This test flexes all the CPU cores to give an indication of how well the processor fares when it’s really pushed to the maximum.

But for an Intel 13th-generation CPU, the i9-13900HX is well up to the task of running your most demanding games.

 377.
With plenty of thermal headroom in the hefty chassis, the laptop’s CPU also performed admirably in a bespoke test that uses the free HandBrake utility. The CPU managed to keep rising thermals at bay when tasked with encoding a 30GB MKV file to the MP4 format. It took just 828 seconds to finish.

 513.
The G16 7630’s 84WHr battery ran for 5 hours and 35 mins. That’s the length of time you can expect a lightweight task like running a video to last on this laptop. For gaming, which uses more power, you can expect about half that time — so about 3 hours of battery life.

 514.
That’s not great, but the laptop charges quickly when you plug it in. The only problem is the charging brick is so big you won’t want to take it with you when you leave your house.

 515.
Should you buy the Dell G16 7630?

 516.
The Dell G16 7630 is a seriously big laptop that really fills a niche market. For me that feels like gamers looking for a desktop replacement but who don’t want to shell out on a more expensive 18-inch gaming laptop.

 517.
There’s a solid argument why you’d want that, too. The configuration I reviewed costs just $1,899, which is a lot cheaper than say, the Razer Blade 18, which has a starting price of $2,599. That makes it a particularly good buy if you can get by without a lot of portability.

 542.
With how expensive new laptops can be, especially some of the best laptops, it’s easy to be tempted by the low-low prices of second hand models on classified and auction sites. But buying anything second hand has risks, right? And that’s true of laptops too, right? Well, sort of. While buying new will always give you more protections, more rights, and likely a better overall product, buying a used laptop can be a great way to make some big savings, get a better laptop than you could otherwise afford, and help cut back on e-waste.

 543.
That’s not to say there aren’t some caveats and potential problems worth considering, though. Here are a few of the ways buying a used laptop isn’t entirely safe, and what you can do about it.

 573.
Most components in even a well-used laptop should still work almost like new, but not all of them. The biggest concern with buying a used laptop is the battery. A swollen battery or one that has received any kind of obvious physical damage has the potential to leak harmful gasses, catch fire, or even explode. If you can check the battery itself before buying by prying open the lpatop, do so, and if the is any suggestion that the battery is damaged, steer well clear.

 574.
If the battery looks okay from the outside, it’s also important to check what its battery life and overall health is like. If it’s run through a lot of recharge cycles, it may not last anywhere near as long as it originally could. You can ask for a battery health report from the seller, or run one yourself if you have some hands-on time.

 575.
Here’s our run down on how to check your laptop’s battery health, for detailed information on how to run the exhaustive (but fast) report.

 602.
Displays can degrade over time, too, so if the laptop is being resold quickly after its original sale, or if it’s been used a lot over a year or more, it’s important to check whether the display looks as good as it should. That means checking for individual pixels that don’t work correctly and bands of color running down the screen. These can sometimes be fixed, but it’s better to avoid them altogether if you can.

 603.
If the laptop has an OLED panel, you should make sure there isn’t any obvious burn-in, too. This can appear as a ghostly effect on the screen, no matter what you’re watching, and there aren’t many solutions for it.

 604.
Consider the warranty

 605.
One of the best ways to protect yourself against problematic purchases is ensuring whatever used laptop you buy has some form of guarantee. If there’s a warranty left, that’s doubly good. If if the seller has it along with all the original documentation (including Windows key and purchase receipt), it can make life a lot easier for you when it comes to getting support from the manufacturer of the used laptop.

 606.
That said, you shouldn’t assume it’ll be applicable to a second-hand purchase. Having a valid returns period for your used laptop, from wherever you’re buying it from, can give you additional peace of mind.

 633.
Used laptops also have the potential to come riddled with malware. That may not be intentional – the original owner may not have realized it was getting slow because it was infected. But the last thing you want to do is start inputting your personal information into a laptop that can steal it.

 634.
To prevent that potential problem, whenever you buy a used laptop, be sure to give it a complete format. Ideally, securely erase it by following our guide, here. This will remove absolutely everything on the internal drive and ensure no matter what was on there before, it won’t be able to do you or your newly formatted laptop any harm.

 635.
Just be aware you’ll need to re-install Windows and all necessary drivers afterward, so be sure to have your Windows key to hand before starting.

 636.
Watch for bad deals

 637.
One other way that buying a used laptop is fraught with peril, is that there are lot of bad deals out there. From nefarious scammers selling old laptops with phony specifications, to the clueless and hopeful trying to get more for their old laptop than its worth.

 638.
You need to make sure that what you’re buying offers the value for money it claims to.

 639.
To ward off buying something outdated and not as fast or as well-equipped as you want, make sure to look up laptop reviews of the model you’re considering. If it’s more than a couple of years old, it’s probably not worth buying unless the price is exceedingly good and it’s been very well looked after.

 640.
You can give yourself some additional protection buying through a reputable website, too. While Amazon, Walmart, and Newegg all work with third-party sellers who can can sell used models, they will give you some protection in the form of money back on your purchase or a managed return.

 641.
If you can, consider making the purchase with a credit card, as your provider will often help you recoup the costs if you find yourself with a laptop that doesn’t match what you paid for it.

 642.
Another good way to avoid any potential pitfalls is to buy a manufacturer refurbished or renewed model. These are likely to be more expensive than models which are simply second-hand, but they will have been fixed up to a near-new standard, complete with additional warranty support. In some cases, with common problems fixed, refurbished laptops can even be more durable than their new counterparts.

 643.
Finally, you can bypass the pitfalls of buying a used laptop while still saving serious scratch by hunting for timely laptop sales instead. PCWorld keeps a running list of the best laptop deals around, updated every weekday, that can help you find some brand new bargains.

 670.
The PlayStation 5 Disc Console Slim, packaged with the well-loved Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, is currently available for $449 at Walmart, down from its usual $559.99. This offer represents the lowest price for this bundle to date and a rare discount for the PS5.

 671.
The PS5 Slim is a powerhouse of a console despite its slim design. With 1TB of SSD storage, players can keep plenty of games — though huge with the size of some of today’s games, that number isn’t what it used to be. Either way, load times are great, with some games loading virtually instantly.

 672.
Gaming on a 4K TV is taken to another level when using the PS5 Slim. The console supports up to 120fps gameplay for compatible games on 4K displays with HDR technology. The visuals are vibrant and full of color, efficiently sucking you right into the worlds you’re playing.

 673.
The DualSense wireless controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers further aid players in having an immersive experience when playing.

 674.
Another super cool thing about the PS5 Slim console is its backward compatibility, allowing you to explore thousands of PS4 games. So, if you’re just now upgrading to the PS5, you should be able to play most of the games you purchased before.

 701.

702.

 703.

 704.
A new crop of early-stage startups — along with some recent VC investments — illustrates a niche emerging in the autonomous vehicle technology sector. Unlike the companies bringing robotaxis to city streets, these startups are taking their tech off-road.

 705.
Two recent entrants — Seattle-based Overland AI and New Brunswick-based Potential — are poised to get a first-mover advantage on this segment of autonomy.

 706.
While these startups are applying their tech in different ways, Overland AI and Potential do share some common off-road ground. Founders of each startup believe they’ve cracked the code to one of the more challenging applications of automated driving by building software that doesn’t rely on some of the main crutches of testing and deployment — such as detailed maps, large swaths of training data and the ability to fall back on remote assistance.

 707.
The U.S. Department of Defense and venture capital investors are taking notice.

 708.
Overland AI, which is developing a self-driving system designed for military operations like reconnaissance, surveillance and delivering electronic warfare packages, was awarded in April up to $18.6 million from the U.S. Army’s Defense Innovation Unit. The funds will be used to build a prototype autonomous software stack for its Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) program over the next two years.

 709.
The startup, which was founded in 2022, raised this week a $10 million seed round led by Point72 Ventures. The funds will be used to expand Overland’s team and continue developing OverDrive, the company’s autonomy stack, according to CEO and founder Byron Boots.

 710.
Meanwhile, Potential, which is making advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that allows ATVs, underground mining vehicles and passenger cars to handle off-road environments, has raised a $2 million CAD (~$1.5 million USD) extension to its seed round led by Brightspark Ventures, a Canadian early-stage VC. That brings Potential’s total funding to $8.5 million CAD (~$6.2 million USD). The startup has spent the last six years developing its technology and is now doing several pilot projects across power sports, motorcycles and automotive.

 711.
Off-road opportunity

 712.
Potential and Overland AI aren’t the only companies trying to apply autonomous vehicle technology to areas outside of public streets. The high-cost pursuit of commercial robotaxi and self-driving truck operations has thwarted dozens of startups over the past several years. As those shut down, a new batch of startups such as Polymath Robotics, Forterra, Pronto.ai, Bear Robotics and Outrider have emerged with more grounded ambitions: applying AV tech to warehouses, mining, industrial and off-road environments.

 713.
“We are absolutely deploying capital in off-road autonomy,” Alexei Andreev, managing director at Autotech Ventures, told TechCrunch. “Actually, if anything, we are staying away from highway autonomy and completely doubled down on off-road autonomy.”

 714.
Most of the off-road companies that Autotech Ventures is investing in today are in the agricultural and construction sectors — products like autonomous mining vehicles, forklifts and tractors. Andreev says for these sectors, it’s about addressing the labor shortage while increasing productivity and making farms and construction areas safer.

 715.
“And if you remove people, you immediately get a reduction in your insurance premiums. So the ROI for those vertical applications is now and it’s significant,” said Andreev.

 716.
Another upshot: Off-road autonomy has found a friend in defense.

 717.
Overland AI: From DARPA to seed funding

 718.

Overland AI’s off-road autonomous driving software, OverDrive, is being tested for defense and national security applications.

 719.
When it comes to automating off-road driving, the U.S. Army can be a great customer. After all, autonomous vehicles started as a DARPA project, says Jeff Peters, a partner at Ibex Investors. DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is a U.S. Department of Defense agency focused on advancing technology for military use.

 720.
“The hype around AV moved a lot of the industry toward bigger potential commercial applications, but DoD projects have persisted,” Peters told TechCrunch over email, noting that autonomous mining startup SafeAI and autonomous trucking startup Kodiak Robotics have also pursued defense grants. “I think AV companies (those still around) will chase DoD projects because it offers large, non-dilutive funding in the interim prior to commercial operations.”

 721.
Overland AI is the latest byproduct of the DARPA program. Boots, a professor of machine learning at the University of Washington and founder of the Robot Learning Laboratory at the university’s school of computer science and engineering, has a long history of collaborating with the U.S. Army Research Lab and DARPA.

 722.
Overland was spun out from Boots’ research and team involved in DARPA’s RACER (Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency) program, the goal of which is to develop self-driving vehicles that can handle tough terrain.

 723.
The program is still ongoing. Overland, which is stacked with deep tech veterans from Google, Nvidia, Apple, Waymo, Aurora, Embark and Argo as well as software engineers who’ve worked on mission-critical solutions at SpaceX, RTX and the U.S. Army, was recently selected to continue on to the second phase.

 724.
“The high-level idea is that currently just about every ground vehicle that the military uses has a person inside of it,” Boots told TechCrunch in a video interview. “And you can imagine if you can just pull the person out of the vehicle, that confers safety and tactical advantages.”

 725.
To pull the person out means vehicles must autonomously navigate complex off-road terrain using only onboard sensors (mainly cameras, according to Boots) and compute, without relying on maps, GPS or remote human operators. That means Overland’s software has to understand the geometry of the ground — including things like vegetation and mud — every step of the way, and how that affects vehicle dynamics.

 726.
“The terrain gets a vote on how the vehicle moves,” said Boots.

 727.
Overland’s tech “basically takes in the sensor data and builds a terrain representation as it goes,” Boots explained. Then the vehicle uses that digital representation “plus the goal that it’s trying to get to, which could be several kilometers away, to try to find a route through the terrain towards that goal.”

 728.
“Part of the benefit of having an autonomous system is that when the system is tasked, if you lose a communication link to that ground vehicle, it will continue to move towards its goal and try to complete the task until the communication link is reestablished,” said Boots.

 729.
Most on-road driving today relies on that telecommunications link to remote assistance, in part because the risk to other road users is higher. That’s why you’ll see Waymo and Cruise robotaxis bricked up on the streets of San Francisco, waiting for a remote operator to give them a nudge after they stopped driving to meet a minimum safety requirement.

 730.
“Military ground systems often need to function in unstructured, dynamic terrain. We believe self-driving technology built for well-defined streets and enclosed lots will struggle there, and that it takes a very strong team to deliver operationally relevant ground autonomy in these environments,” Chris Morales, partner on the defense tech team at Point72 Ventures, told TechCrunch.

 733.
“How can you actually enable somebody who maybe isn’t the 100% expert driver, but somebody who wants to go off-roading and experience these more challenging conditions?” Sam Poirier, CEO at Potential, asked in a recent interview.

 734.
Potential’s core platform, called Terrain Intelligence, uses computer vision to help vehicles see, interpret and prepare for complex terrain and changing surface conditions ahead. Terrain Intelligence can read data from a single camera, rather than relying on additional sensors like additional cameras, lidar and radar.

 735.
At the most basic level, Potential’s off-road ADAS alerts the driver to an impassable object up ahead or the need to switch to a better drive setting based on new terrain.

 736.
“The second level is, can we instead actually help to automate the changes of what are typically driver-assisted settings?” said Poirier. “Most vehicles have two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, sand mode, mud mode, things like that. Ultimately, at this stage, it’s up to the driver to switch between these…and the driver has to understand when to use these different modes.”

 737.
Potential’s final level would involve using existing sensor data and fine-tuning those settings and pushing the limits of performance.

 738.
“There are things that the assistance tools can do that an individual driver — no matter how good your expertise — cannot do on their own,” said Scott Kunselman, an ex-Jeep chief engineer, auto industry veteran and advisor to Potential. “Stability controls are a good example because to enable stability control, you need independent brake control. The driver only has one brake pedal and actuates the whole brake system at once. Whereas stability control can individually actuate each wheel and that’s how you can produce, for example, the ability to offset yaw in a vehicle.”

 739.
Yaw, by the way, is when a vehicle’s weight shifts from its center of gravity to the right or left, which can cause it to spin out or fishtail.

 740.
Potential said it’s working with both Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs to license its software and integrate it directly into the vehicles. Andreev suggests Potential focus on business relations with Tier 1 suppliers rather than OEMs that are less likely to take a chance on a small startup.

 767.
In a world where security and peace of mind are paramount, the Eufy Security SoloCam S220 emerges as a highly sought-after solution, now available at a remarkable price of just $69.99 at Amazon, a significant drop from its original $129.99.

 768.
The price cut is one we love to see because it makes an excellent camera more accessible to everyone, allowing you to purchase more of these to drape over your home so you can check all angles.

 769.
The SoloCam S220 doesn’t need wires to power up because it has solar charging capabilities. It only takes about three hours of sunlight every day to charge the camera fully. So, unless you live near the poles, you’re good to use these Eufy cams.

 770.
The camera features infrared LEDs and an f/1.6 aperture, so you’ll get clear images even in low-light situations or at night. When your dog starts randomly growling during the wee hours, you can just open the app and check your home’s surroundings to see if he just heard the neighbors or if there’s actually a security issue.

 771.
Setting up the Eufy SoloCam S220 is a breeze. The camera itself is compact and requires no wires. Simply drill it into your home’s wall and you’re good to go.

 772.
One of the standout features of the SoloCam S220 is its ability to detect humans. If you want to take security to the next level and receive notifications about specific individuals at your door, you’ll need the HomeBase 3 Eufy security center. While the HomeBase 3 is not currently on sale, it’s a worthwhile addition. Using advanced artificial intelligence, the cameras can distinguish between family members, delivery personnel, and potential intruders, sending only the notifications that are relevant to you.

 773.
While we didn’t get to review the Eufy SoloCam S220 ourselves, the camera has a whopping 4.3/5 stars on Amazon out of over 1600 reviews.

 774.
Most users appreciate how easy this camera is to install and set up with the local W-iFi network. One reviewer states, for instance, that the video quality during the daytime is crystal clear, and the night vision is impressive.

 775.
The Eufy SoloCam S220 is an absolute bargain at $69.99, an exceptional investment for anyone looking to enhance their home security.

 798.

799.

 800.

 801.
Keeping up with an industry as fast-moving as AI is a tall order. So until an AI can do it for you, here’s a handy roundup of recent stories in the world of machine learning, along with notable research and experiments we didn’t cover on their own.

 802.
By the way, TechCrunch plans to launch an AI newsletter soon. Stay tuned. In the meantime, we’re upping the cadence of our semiregular AI column, which was previously twice a month (or so), to weekly — so be on the lookout for more editions.

 803.
This week in AI, OpenAI once again dominated the news cycle (despite Google’s best efforts) with a product launch, but also, with some palace intrigue. The company unveiled GPT-4o, its most capable generative model yet, and just days later effectively disbanded a team working on the problem of developing controls to prevent “superintelligent” AI systems from going rogue.

 804.
The dismantling of the team generated a lot of headlines, predictably. Reporting — including ours — suggests that OpenAI deprioritized the team’s safety research in favor of launching new products like the aforementioned GPT-4o, ultimately leading to the resignation of the team’s two co-leads, Jan Leike and OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever.

 805.
Superintelligent AI is more theoretical than real at this point; it’s not clear when — or whether — the tech industry will achieve the breakthroughs necessary in order to create AI capable of accomplishing any task a human can. But the coverage from this week would seem to confirm one thing: that OpenAI’s leadership — in particular CEO Sam Altman — has increasingly chosen to prioritize products over safeguards.

 806.
Altman reportedly “infuriated” Sutskever by rushing the launch of AI-powered features at OpenAI’s first dev conference last November. And he’s said to have been critical of Helen Toner, director at Georgetown’s Center for Security and Emerging Technologies and a former member of OpenAI’s board, over a paper she co-authored that cast OpenAI’s approach to safety in a critical light — to the point where he attempted to push her off the board.

 807.
Over the past year or so, OpenAI’s let its chatbot store fill up with spam and (allegedly) scraped data from YouTube against the platform’s terms of service while voicing ambitions to let its AI generate depictions of porn and gore. Certainly, safety seems to have taken a back seat at the company — and a growing number of OpenAI safety researchers have come to the conclusion that their work would be better supported elsewhere.

 808.
Here are some other AI stories of note from the past few days:

 809.

 810.
OpenAI + Reddit: In more OpenAI news, the company reached an agreement with Reddit to use the social site’s data for AI model training. Wall Street welcomed the deal with open arms — but Reddit users may not be so pleased.

 811.
Google’s AI: Google hosted its annual I/O developer conference this week, during which it debuted a ton of AI products. We rounded them up here, from the video-generating Veo to AI-organized results in Google Search to upgrades to Google’s Gemini chatbot apps.

 812.
Anthropic hires Krieger: Mike Krieger, one of the co-founders of Instagram and, more recently, the co-founder of personalized news app Artifact (which TechCrunch corporate parent Yahoo recently acquired), is joining Anthropic as the company’s first chief product officer. He’ll oversee both the company’s consumer and enterprise efforts.

 813.
AI for kids: Anthropic announced last week that it would begin allowing developers to create kid-focused apps and tools built on its AI models — so long as they follow certain rules. Notably, rivals like Google disallow their AI from being built into apps aimed at younger ages.

 814.
AI film festival: AI startup Runway held its second-ever AI film festival earlier this month. The takeaway? Some of the more powerful moments in the showcase came not from AI, but the more human elements.

 815.

 816.
More machine learnings

 817.
AI safety is obviously top of mind this week with the OpenAI departures, but Google Deepmind is plowing onwards with a new “Frontier Safety Framework.” Basically it’s the organization’s strategy for identifying and hopefully preventing any runaway capabilities — it doesn’t have to be AGI, it could be a malware generator gone mad or the like.

 818.

 819.
The framework has three steps: 1. Identify potentially harmful capabilities in a model by simulating its paths of development. 2. Evaluate models regularly to detect when they have reached known “critical capability levels.” 3. Apply a mitigation plan to prevent exfiltration (by another or itself) or problematic deployment. There’s more detail here. It may sound kind of like an obvious series of actions, but it’s important to formalize them or everyone is just kind of winging it. That’s how you get the bad AI.

 820.
A rather different risk has been identified by Cambridge researchers, who are rightly concerned at the proliferation of chatbots that one trains on a dead person’s data in order to provide a superficial simulacrum of that person. You may (as I do) find the whole concept somewhat abhorrent, but it could be used in grief management and other scenarios if we are careful. The problem is we are not being careful.

 821.

Image Credits: Cambridge University / T. Hollanek

 822.
“This area of AI is an ethical minefield,” said lead researcher Katarzyna Nowaczyk-Basińska. “We need to start thinking now about how we mitigate the social and psychological risks of digital immortality, because the technology is already here.” The team identifies numerous scams, potential bad and good outcomes, and discusses the concept generally (including fake services) in a paper published in Philosophy & Technology. Black Mirror predicts the future once again!

 823.
In less creepy applications of AI, physicists at MIT are looking at a useful (to them) tool for predicting a physical system’s phase or state, normally a statistical task that can grow onerous with more complex systems. But training up a machine learning model on the right data and grounding it with some known material characteristics of a system and you have yourself a considerably more efficient way to go about it. Just another example of how ML is finding niches even in advanced science.

 824.
Over at CU Boulder, they’re talking about how AI can be used in disaster management. The tech may be useful for quick prediction of where resources will be needed, mapping damage, even helping train responders, but people are (understandably) hesitant to apply it in life-and-death scenarios.

 825.

Attendees at the workshop.

 826.
Professor Amir Behzadan is trying to move the ball forward on that, saying “Human-centered AI leads to more effective disaster response and recovery practices by promoting collaboration, understanding and inclusivity among team members, survivors and stakeholders.” They’re still at the workshop phase, but it’s important to think deeply about this stuff before trying to, say, automate aid distribution after a hurricane.

 827.
Lastly some interesting work out of Disney Research, which was looking at how to diversify the output of diffusion image generation models, which can produce similar results over and over for some prompts. Their solution? “Our sampling strategy anneals the conditioning signal by adding scheduled, monotonically decreasing Gaussian noise to the conditioning vector during inference to balance diversity and condition alignment.” I simply could not put it better myself.

 859.
The new iPads are here! Following their unveiling at last week’s “Let Loose” Apple event, the new iPad Pro and iPad Air models launched this week alongside the Apple Pencil Pro and revamped Magic Keyboard, bringing the first updates to Apple’s iPad lineup in over 18 months.

 860.

This week also saw the release of iOS 17.5 and related operating system updates, while Apple previewed some clever new accessibility features coming later this year and we got an intriguing rumor about the 2025 iPhone lineup, so read on below for all the details on these stories and more!

 861.
Hands-On With New iPad Pro: M4 Chip, OLED Display, and More

 862.
The new iPad Pro and iPad Air models launched on Wednesday after being unveiled by Apple last week.

 864.
Hands-On With the New M2 iPad Air

 865.
In addition to the new M4 iPad Pro, we also picked up an M2 iPad Air in order to see what’s new with the mid-tier iPad family and shared our early thoughts in a hands-on video. The new 13-inch size option is of course the most obvious change, but the new M2 chip is a welcome spec bump and the relocated front camera is great for those who want to use their iPad in a landscape orientation.
