43.

 78.
I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to Canelo Alvarez on several occasions. He’s always struck me as polite and dignified. Therefore, the undisputed super middleweight champion’s actions at a Thursday press conference to promote Saturday’s fight with Jaime Munguia came as something of a surprise. While it’s true Canelo and his former promoter Oscar De La Hoya have been at odds for some time, Thursday’s press conference saw matters come to a head. Indeed, some of De La Hoya’s words led Canelo to get out of his seat and head straight towards him, an act that led to others getting between the two men.

 79.

 80.
“I would be remiss if I did not respond to the man I used to promote,” De La Hoya, who now promotes Munguia, had stated. “To be clear I have nothing but respect for Canelo Alvarez as a fighter…but he has spent much of the last two months insulting me rather than promoting this fight.” But that wasn’t all. “Yes,” De La Hoya continued, “I have faced a lot of challenges in my life. Yes, I’ve been to rehab several times. Yes, there were some really low points in my life and yes, there were times that work was not my priority based on my mental health, which I had neglected for so long.”

 81.
De La Hoya then focused on his former fighter. “But that doesn’t change the fact that Golden Boy built Canelo Alvarez, period,” he said. “The company you fought under has always had one name, and it’s mine, so put some fucking respect on it.” When it was Canelo’s turn to talk, De La Hoya interjected. “You know who your daddy is,” he said to Canelo. Afterward, Canelo decided to speak his mind in English. “He’s a fucking asshole, that is what I said,” he claimed in reference to De La Hoya. “He steals from his fighters. That’s what he do. Fucking pussy. Mother fucker.”

 82.
Well, then. Again this has indeed been a long time coming. Still, seeing Canelo, who has generally carried himself as a consummate professional over the years, become visibly frustrated in public is not a common occurrence. Suffice to say, Munguia, the man Canelo will actually be fighting in Las Vegas this weekend kept matters low key, as is his nature. Perhaps unsurprisingly, “Canelo” was the top United States trend on X (formerly Twitter) later on Thursday. For those who believe any attention is good attention – the press conference was unqualified success.

 109.
Fighters are often criticized for failing to prioritize their financial interests in their MMA careers, but no such accusation can be made toward Irish prospect Paul Hughes.

 110.
Hughes (11-1), a former Cage Warriors champion, just went through the process of free agency and had bids on the table from both the UFC and PFL. He opted to go with the latter to the surprise of some, but for Hughes it was not much of a debate.

 111.
“As the time has went on, the more and more chuffed I’ve been with the decision,” Hughes told MMA Junkie on Wednesday. “I’d fought for Cage Warriors a long time and to have that opportunity to test free agency was exciting. … I actually opened communication with the PFL six months before this. We had an offer from them, but at the time, I couldn’t get out of my Cage Warriors deal. So I couldn’t entertain that. But the offer was there.

 112.
“What that offer did was change things for me. I had six months to basically make this decision if this was the pathway I wanted to go down. I’ve had a lot of time to think about it. … The main driving force behind it was the 2025 $1 million tournament, which I’ll be entering. I’m 27 years old. If I get the opportunity to have $1 million in the bank at 27, I think I’m doing pretty damn good. Fighters need to capitalize in this game. It’s that simple. The last thing I want is to be someone who gave my life to this game and came out the other side with no money in the end.”

 113.

 114.

 115.

 116.

 117.

 118.
Why PFL over UFC?

 119.
Hughes confirmed that his free agency process netted an offer from the UFC. He could’ve potentially made an octagon debut on the same UFC 303 card that features the return of Irish superstar Conor McGregor, and it was all tempting.

 120.
However, when Hughes sat down with his team and dove into the positives and negatives, it kept coming back to maximizing his position. In that vein, the package PFL presented was difficult to resist.

 121.
“I, of course, had an offer from the UFC,” Hughes said. “I’m trail blazing my own path here, and I am on my own journey, and I am forging a new journey for myself. But also for younger fighters coming up through this game that have star potential, you don’t have to always just go this pathway of what you’re being told to do. You’re most likely not getting compensated for it at the beginning of your career. Why should you have to fight a few years before you start making money when you bring the value to the table where you should be getting paid your worth?

 122.
“I understand if you’re a younger fighter coming up and you have six, seven, eight fights and you don’t really have a name for yourself, you haven’t won word titles outside of the organization, then go down that pathway potentially. But not many fighters come out the other side of this game with money in the bank, and the value I bring to this game and my fights and this sport and the atmosphere and the feeling that I bring, I deserve to get compensated for that. I believe I bring something different to the table.”

 123.
Looking toward Bellator Champions Series debut

 124.
The positive light in which PFL views Hughes is evident from the outset. Just days after his signing was made official, the promotion booked him for the Bellator Champions Series: Dublin card on June 22 at 3Arena.

 125.
It might be the last time Hughes gets a chance to compete on home soil for several years as he intends to make multiple runs in the $1 million PFL seasons starting next year. He is pleased he gets to keep active before that begins next year, though, starting with a co-main event matchup against Bobby King (12-6).

 126.
“I knew this Dublin card was going to be a thing,” Hughes said. “I asked for Patricky ‘Pitbull,’ I asked for Peter Queally – these were the names I was throwing out. They were unavailable, but I said, ‘Get me the hardest fight you can, get me the biggest name value fight you can.’ They loved to hear that, but they said, ‘Look, we’ve got this guy for you, he’s accepted the fight and let’s get the ball rolling.’

 127.
“Bobby’s a great fighter and a tough guy, but I truly believe I’m one of the best in the world right now. I truly, truly believe that, so I’m going to make it look easy in there.”

 128.
Hughes said he’s grateful to have his debut scheduled so soon after signing and plans to show the PFL brass it made the right decision in bringing him such a lucrative offer. He said he feels respected and appreciated in his new home and intends to deliver with spectacular showings inside the cage.

 129.
“They believed in me,” Hughes said. “They gave me a great offer and they have been absolutely incredible to deal with so far. It’s very exciting for me on all fronts to take this next step in my career with the PFL.”

 154.
Garcia defeated Devin Haney, a former amateur rival, by majority decision on April 20 in New York. Garcia knocked Haney down three times and handed the WBC super lightweight champion his first loss but did not win the title because he was over the weight limit.

 155.
“Everybody knows that I don’t cheat,” Garcia said in a video posted on X on Wednesday night.

 158.
ESPN reported that the 25-year-old Garcia tested positive for the performance-enhancing substance Ostarine the day before and the day of the fight, citing a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association letter. Ostarine is a selective androgen receptor modulator, and its use can stimulate muscle growth. The drug is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

 159.
The samples were taken before the fight, but the results weren’t known until later, ESPN reported.

 160.
“We learned about this situation not too long ago and it’s unfortunate Ryan cheated and disrespected both the fans and the sport of boxing by fighting dirty and breaking positive not once, but twice,” Haney said in a statement to ESPN, adding: “This puts the fight in a completely different light.”

 161.
Garcia’s victory could be overturned if the positive drug test is confirmed.

 188.
HYDERABAD & MONTREAL, May 02 (IPS) – In a world faced with habitat loss and species extinction, climate change, and pollution, it’s crucial that countries develop their national action plans and create a society that lives in harmony with nature, says David Cooper, Acting Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), in an exclusive interview with IPS.

 189.

 190.
And in a year where more than 4 billion people across the globe are expected to participate in elections, Cooper believes that politicians should put biodiversity on their manifestos.

 191.
Since taking the reins from the previous Executive Director, Elizabeth Mrema, Cooper has been at the forefront of steering the CBD towards the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework.

 192.
Later this year, world leaders will gather in Cali, Colombia for the 16th Biodiversity Convention of the Parties (COP16) slated for October 21 to November 1, 2024 for which preparations are currently underway.

 193.
Cooper gives insight into the core issues that will be on the top of the COP16 agenda, the current status of biodiversity finance, including the newly operationalized biodiversity fund, the upcoming meetings of the scientific and technical bodies of the CBD, the current status of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAP) and what is likely to unfold in the coming months in Digital Sequence Information (DSI).

 194.

David Cooper, Acting Executive Secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

 195.
Biodiversity Finance: On Track but at Slow Pace

 196.
The UN Biodiversity Convention aims to mobilize at least USD 20 billion per year by 2025 and at least USD 30 billion per year by 2030 for biodiversity-related funding from all sources, including the public and private sectors.

 197.
However, the current situation with biodiversity funding shows that while progress is happening, it’s not fast enough. Some countries and groups are trying hard to give more money to projects that help nature, but overall, it’s still below expectations, and there are unfilled promises, Cooper acknowledges.

 198.
“We need to see a serious road map,” Cooper says, “All countries, in particular the donor country community, have to see how we are going to achieve at least that USD 20 billion by 2025 because that’s imminent.”

 199.
He called on big donors to honor their commitments.

 200.
“It’s really important that the big donors who promise money actually follow through and give the money they said they would. We need everyone to work together to make sure there’s enough money to protect our plants, animals, and the places they live,” Cooper says. “Certainly, we need to see all countries put efforts behind all of the goals and targets of the framework and that, of course, includes those on financial resources.”

 201.
Cooper welcomed the decision by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) to establish a new fund, the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund. He said the CBD secretariat was working closely with Carlos Manuel Rodriguez, the GEF CEO, and his team.

 202.
“We then saw a number of contributions to that fund coming. The contribution from Canada is a significant one of 200 million Canadian dollars. Other significant donations came from Germany, Spain, Japan, and most recently, Luxembourg. Actually, the contribution from Luxembourg, if we look at its pro rata, given the size of the Luxembourg economy, is also quite generous, even though it’s only USD 7 million in total.”

 203.
National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs)

 204.
It’s not only about funding, Cooper says, but countries showing their commitment to their agreements, including developing NBSAPs. He acknowledged that very few countries had submitted so far.

 205.
“It’s only a few countries so far, and Spain, Japan, China, France, Hungary, and Ireland have submitted their NBSAPS, as well as the European Union,” says Cooper.

 206.
While he is optimistic that all the countries will develop their targets, he recognizes that it’s a complex process.

 207.
“I think most countries are in the process of developing their national targets, which is the first thing they’re supposed to do. But this is a process that is also supposed to engage all the different sectors of the economy and all the different parts of society, with the engagement of local communities, indigenous peoples, businesses, and so on.”

 208.
The CBD supports the countries through the complexities.

 209.
“The developing countries in particular have been supported through the Global Environment Facility. We’ve also been organizing a number of regional dialogues so that countries can share their experience as they move forward,” Cooper says.

 210.
At COP15, it was decided that all countries should submit their NBSAPs, if possible, before COP16.

 211.
“If they’re not able to submit their full NBSAPS by then, then at least they should provide their updated national targets. So, we do expect many, many countries to have progressed on their NBSAPs by COP16. Immediately prior to COP16, there will be another meeting of the subsidiary body on implementation to also take stock of where we are on that.”

 212.
COP16: What’s In, What’s Out

 213.
The core focus of CBD COP16 is likely to revolve around the adoption and implementation of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework. This framework sets out the global targets and goals for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use for the next decade and beyond. Key aspects of the framework may include targets related to halting biodiversity loss, promoting sustainable resource management, enhancing ecosystem resilience, and ensuring equitable sharing of the benefits derived from biodiversity.

 214.
“I think I can highlight four key areas for COP 16,” says Cooper. “The first is that we have to see, and we have to have demonstrated progress in terms of implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework. That means national targets are set. That means NBSAPs developed in at least a majority of countries. That means funds are flowing, which means, as I said before, a credible path towards this USD 20 billion by 2025 target. It also means the Global Biodiversity Framework Fund should be receiving more funds and supporting more projects.”

 215.
The second core issue will be the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of Digital Sequence Information (DSI) on genetic resources. There was an agreement made at COP15 to establish this mechanism, but no details were fleshed out at that time, so those details are now being negotiated in an intergovernmental working group.

 216.
“Of course, the establishment of such a mechanism with a fund would give another major boost to the Convention because it would bring in another source of funding.”

 217.
The third area would be finance, he says.

 218.
“The fourth area that I would highlight is the need to further strengthen the role of indigenous peoples and local communities as key actors.”

 219.
He also points out that there’s a number of other issues, such as the issue of biodiversity and health and synthetic biology, that need to be managed, including looking at a risk assessment and risk management for, for instance, gene-edited mosquitoes.

 220.
“They’ve determined that the theme of the COP will be peace with nature, which is a broad theme that will include many, many issues,” he reveals.

 221.
Plastic Pollution Treaty and CBD’s Role

 222.
The fourth session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-4) on plastic pollution in April 2024 at the Shaw Center in Ottawa, Canada, aims to develop an internationally legally binding instrument on plastic pollution, including in the marine environment, to end plastic pollution by 2040.

 223.
Ending plastic pollution is also one of the biodiversity targets, Cooper says, adding that the CBD is actively involved in the logistical organization of INC-4.

 224.
“Also, the reduction of waste from plastics and pollution from plastics is one of the elements of target 7 of the Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. So, we are seeing the success of INC-4 negotiations as hugely important for the implementation of the Framework,” he says.

 225.
What to Watch out for Between Now and COP16

 226.
Although all eyes will be on the COP16 negotiations, there are a number of global events taking place in the next few months that will contribute to the agenda and determine the level of the world’s preparedness for the conference.

 227.
“The most important ones are obviously the SBSTTA (Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical, and Technological Advice) and the SBI (Subsidiary Body on Implementation), then this working group on Digital Sequence Information that will take place in August,” Cooper says.

 228.
Like the SBI, SBSTTA is a subsidiary body established under the CBD. While the SBI specifically assists in reviewing progress in the implementation of the Convention and identifies obstacles to its implementation, among other functions, SBSTTA plays a crucial role in ensuring that decisions made under the CBD are informed by the best available scientific evidence and technical expertise.

 229.
“Then we have the G7 and G20 processes coming up, which are important processes to show leadership. The CBD COP itself will be followed by the COPs of climate change and desertification, making the linkage between these. Also, we expect Colombia and the indigenous peoples will host just before COP, a pre-cop focusing on indigenous peoples and local communities and their roles,” Cooper says.

 230.
Finally, as a record 64 countries across the world hold their elections this year to elect a new national government, does this provide a unique opportunity to speak about biodiversity and should biodiversity, like climate change, be made an election issue?

 231.
“Definitely,” says Cooper.

 232.
“If we look at many of the extreme events that people suffered from, particularly last year, whether these be fires, wildfires, droughts, storms, or floods, you know, these are largely attributed by the media to climate change. Climate change is increasing the probability and severity of these events, but these events are also happening because of ecosystem degradation because we haven’t been managing biodiversity and ecosystems well. So, I think we all have an opportunity to make this message and these links clearer. Politicians have a particular responsibility to do so, and I hope more of them will do so as these various elections in various parts of the world pan out.”

 304.
(Bloomberg) — China’s largest and most advanced warship has begun its first sea trial, paving the way for the country to enhance its navy’s capability to project power amid US concerns of Beijing’s assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region.

 305.
Most Read from Bloomberg

 306.
The Fujian, which is China’s third aircraft carrier, tested waters Wednesday, according to the state broadcaster CCTV. The ship was launched and officially named in June 2022. The province is across the strait from Taiwan, which the Chinese Communist Party has pledged to take — even if by force.

 307.
The 316-meter (1037-foot) carrier is fitted with three electromagnetic catapults to launch fighter jets, which is similar to the advanced system used by the latest US carrier, the 337-meter long USS Gerald R. Ford. But unlike America’s fleet of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, the Fujian is conventionally powered, which could limit its range and duration of its deployments.

 308.
The first sea trial will mainly focus on the reliability and stability of the propulsion and power systems, according to Chinese state media. The Fujian needs to go through the trials to test its performance including for its engine and weapon systems, before it’s delivered to the navy.

 309.
The sea trial marks a milestone for the Fujian, a key piece of the puzzle in President Xi Jinping’s ambitious plan to improve the military. Under his watch, China set a goal of building “a modern military” by 2027 and a “world-class” version by 2049, the 100th anniversary of the People’s Republic.

 310.
With a displacement of more than 80,000 tons, the Fujian is some 20,000 tons more than its two predecessors. The ship is part of a naval buildup that the Pentagon expects to reach 435 vessels by 2030. In addition, China is bolstering the armaments on its Coast Guard vessels, sending the militarized ships to contested waters in places such as the South China Sea.

 311.
Both the Liaoning, a refitted Soviet-era vessel that became China’s first aircraft carrier, and the Chinese-built Shandong use ski-jumps, which are less efficient for launching jets compared to catapults. The Fujian also features a flat runway, which allows for more room on the carrier’s deck for jets.

 312.
Sea trials for the Liaoning took as long as 13 months, while the Shandong took some 19 months.

 313.
(Updates with comments from state media in paragraph four. A previous version corrected a mention for a jet-launching method.)

 335.
PERTH: Student demonstrations at many universities, sparked by the Israel-Hamas conflict, revive an old legacy. But these are different times.
This week, Columbia University began suspending students who refused to dismantle a protest camp, after talks between the student organisers and academic leaders to end the demonstration stalled.
The situation has since escalated further with riot police storming a Pro-Palestinian encampment at the university on Tuesday evening US time.
As the pro-Palestinian protests expand across university campuses in the US and other parts of the world including Australia, it is easy to see them as continuing the tradition of explosive student demonstrations that began in the 1960s with protests against the Vietnam War.
Largely made up of student coalitions, the latest protests are primarily focused on the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, which has seen more than 34,000 Palestinians killed and 77,000 injured by Israeli attacks according to Gaza authorities.
Pro-Palestinian protesters are demanding universities cut financial and academic ties with Israel, support a ceasefire in Gaza and disclose investments related to the conflict. Critics of the protests decry them as antisemitic.
A university education is meant to be about more than building disciplinary knowledge or kickstarting careers.
A well-rounded university education should highlight our place in the world, our responsibilities to those around us – both near and far – and our collective responsibility to identify and protest against injustice.
Even if the resulting demands for a better world are idealistic (and possibly naive), we want our universities to produce citizens who demand more from us as fellow members of society.
As the current protests show, this notion of universities as beacons of democratic dissent and free speech is again being put to the test.
From the anti-Vietnam War movement of the 1960s and ’70s to the anti-apartheid movement in the 1980s, the anti-Iraq War protests in the early 2000s and Black Lives Matter rallies just a few years ago, universities have long been places that can act as a barometer of feelings and an outlet for anger towards injustices.
Even the recent decision by Northeastern University to request Massachusetts State Police to enter the campus and use riot gear to clear an encampment on the campus resulting in the arrest of 102 protesters has a precedent in the 1960s.
In many ways, the nonviolent direct action of these encampments is exactly what we should expect to see from our universities and the students who attend them.
But while familiar in many ways, these protests are also different.
They are different because they have been accompanied at times by calls for violence against a nation and even a group of people – in this case Jews.
We have heard calls from student leaders that “Zionists don’t deserve to live” and that US President Joe Biden should be killed in the name of peace because of his support for Israel.
They are different from previous anti-war protests because they have been fuelled by social media, whose algorithms reward extremism and controversy.
From the beginning of the conflict in Gaza in October 2023, propaganda from both Hamas and Israel has travelled through the internet, providing content depicting graphic violence, misleading and outright false claims, and hate speech – particularly “upticks in specific and general Islamophobic and antisemitic narratives”.
It is different because academic presses such as Verso have published works that celebrate the October 7 attacks as “exhilarating” and “moments of freedom, that defeated Zionist expectations of submission to occupation and siege”, ignoring the more than 1,200 people murdered by Hamas.
Likewise, public rallies supporting Israel have moved beyond protesting antisemitism and demands for the Israeli hostages to be released into incessantly echoing calls to keep bombing Gaza – celebrating not just war, but possible war crimes.
While protests have long played a role in the university experience, it is important to unpack why these differences have emerged.
Maybe the clues can be found in the inability of the leadership of the elite universities to show, well, leadership.
This was highlighted when the presidents of three Ivy League universities fronted a Congressional hearing and could not answer a simple question: “Would calling for the genocide of Jews constitute a violation of the code of conduct at your school, yes or no?”
Three trends have influenced the way that debates happen on university campuses and beyond, placing the contemporary university in a polarised position.
The first is the structure of aforementioned social media algorithms, which provide users with a distorted view of reality and promote extremism. We tend to see the most controversial posts and read what confirms our own view of the world. In this scenario, the world is black and white – people are right or wrong and there is no room for nuanced opinions.
The second is that the prevalence of ‘safe spaces’ over brave spaces has created a tendency to avoid the educational power of discomfort. In the Coddling of the American Mind, authors Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt argue that too much effort is put into protecting contemporary students from confronting complex and difficult topics.
Not only is the contemporary student shielded from controversial topics, but they have no opportunity to discuss, debate, work through and wrestle with them alongside classmates with which they disagree.
The third is the politicisation of universities which, since at least the 1990s, has placed them in the middle of the culture wars.
Monitored by social media warriors as well as media and political ideologues, every lecture becomes a potential battleground.
In this fraught context, many academics will avoid rather than discuss controversial topics. If, for example, a criticism of the atrocities of the Israel Defense Forces is antisemitic, defending Israel’s right to exist is seen as supporting imperialism and genocide.
While protests on campuses are nothing new, what is different is that fuelled by outside agitation, neither side is willing to cede ground.
That their views may not be as correct as they believe them to be is not on the table. In this environment, these appear to be less recognisable as student protests, and more as the mobilisation of ideologues.
There is a need for political, educational and community leaders to respond with a sense of urgency.
University leadership could stop relying on riot police to respond to protesters while moving to engage directly with their demands. Both antisemitic and anti-Islamic rhetoric needs to be dealt with through the hate speech process not repression.
In the longer term, returning complex and intractable topics back to the classroom and empowering academic and student voices to discuss them could help us find a better way forward.

 445.
At least 14 people were wounded by the strike which triggered a series of explosions, Ukrainian sources said.

 446.
Russian outlets claim a large amount of Western ammunition that had just been delivered to Ukraine was obliterated in the blast.

 447.
According to pro-Putin Telegram channels, Ukrainian troops were visible in the aftermath of the strike – indicating the private postal facility was used as an ammunition store.

 448.
One account said: “A warehouse with NATO shells received from abroad the day before is on fire.”

 449.
Russian pro-Kremlin outlet Readovka reported: “More and more SBU [Ukrainian secret service] officers are arriving at the site, as well as fire brigades.

 450.
“The latter are in no hurry to put out the fire due to the threat of explosions.”

 451.
The outlet claimed the warehouse contained “shells from the US which had just been delivered”.

 452.
There was no independent verification of the claims regarding Western munitions nor Ukrainian troops being at the scene ahead of firefighters.

 453.
The strike comes as fresh US and other NATO military supplies are this week arriving in Ukraine after a pause partly caused by gridlock in the US Congress, which delayed approval.

 454.
Russian reports alleged that the postal warehouse “is engaged in logistics for the Armed Forces of Ukraine”.

 455.
Ukrainian accounts said the facility was a “local sorting depot” belonging to Ukraine’s “largest privately owned mail and logistics company”.

 456.
The founder of the private postal service, Vladimir Popereshnyuk, said approximately 900 parcels had been destroyed.

 457.
Ukraine’s military administration said: “The fire is being extinguished.

 458.
“There are broken windows in the surrounding houses.

 491.

 530.
Ryan Garcia refuses to slow down on his at-length victory lap.

 531.
He may, however, be forced to give back the actual victory.

 532.
The Ring has learned that Garcia returned at least two positive drug tests surrounding his April 20 win over Devin Haney. Urine samples collected on April 19 and post-fight on April 20 showed evidence of the banned substance Ostarine [Enobosarm].

 533.
All involved parties were informed by Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) via letter, a copy which was obtained by The Ring. The letter also indicated the unconfirmed presence of Nandrolone, also from the April 19 pre-fight testing sample.

 534.

 535.
Their fight took place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The DAZN Pay-Per-View/PPV.com event was sanctioned by the New York State Athletic Commission, who will investigate the matter. Garcia floored Haney in rounds seven, nine and ten en route to a majority decision win.

 536.
Haney (31-1, 15 knockouts) retained the WBC 140-pound title despite the defeat. The belt was no longer at stake once Garcia weighed a career-heaviest 143.2 pounds during the April 19 official weigh-in.

 537.
Garcia was required to pay a fine and rework the fight contract to move forward with the main event. He now faces additional disciplinary action if unable to disprove the test results.

 538.
Garcia (25-1, 20 KOs) has ten days to request testing of the B-samples. Athletes are required to cover that expense. For now, he has gone the route of his new friend, former U.S. president and 2024 presidential hopeful Donald Trump.

 539.
“I’m here to address this bull-fucking-shit claim that I cheated,” Garcia stated in a video posted through his Instagram account. “Everyone knows that I don’t cheat. What can I say? Why didn’t they come out with this before the fight, if they found it before? Why would they let me step into the ring as a cheater?

 540.
“I come out with the victory and then they post this. These are people that are trying to attack me for whatever reason. No weapon against me shall prosper.”

 541.
That doesn’t quite cut it with his longtime rival.

 542.
“We learned about this situation not too long ago,” Haney said in a statement provided to Tbe Ring. “It’s unfortunate Ryan cheated and disrespected both the fans and the sport of boxing by fighting dirty.”

 543.
“Ryan owes the fans an apology, and by his recent tweet he still thinks this is a joke. We put our lives on the line to entertain people for a living. You don’t play boxing. This puts the fight in a completely different light. Despite the disadvantage, I still fought on my shield and got back up! People die in this sport. This isn’t a joking matter.”

 544.
The only fair point raised by Garcia is on the flaws in test result turnaround time.

 545.
It does not, however, disprove its validity. The 25-year-old Victorville, California native is well aware of this, as he posted his own negative result from earlier in camp.

 546.
“I’ve never taken a steroid in my life, I don’t even know where to get steroids.,” insisted Garcia. “I barely take supplements. They’re saying it’s coming from the ashwaganda, that’s fucking retarded. Big lies, I beat his ass. Fuck outta here.”

 547.
His supporting cast remains intact.

 548.
“Ryan has put out multiple statements denying knowingly using any banned substances,” Golden Boy said in a provided press statement. “[W]e believe him. We are working with his team to determine how this finding came to be and will address this further once we conclude that process.”

 549.
Enobosarm is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM). Its primary purpose among men is to prevent muscle loss. The substance was banned by World Anti-Doping Agency in 2008. It is not approved for any medical use—prescribed or otherwise.

 550.
It continues to show up in boxing circles, however.

 551.
The most recent instance was in Amir Khan’s test results surrounding his February 2022 knockout defeat to Kell Brook. The former 140-pound titlist was subsequently dealt a two-year ban, although he announced his retirement by that point.

 552.
Former WBC super middleweight titlist Lucian Bute also tested positive for Enobosarm in his April 2016 draw with Badou Jack. The substance was discovered from a post-fight sample whose results were returned on May 27, four weeks after their title fight. Bute insisted ingestion through a contaminated supplement. His B-sample also came back positive, its results not learned until August 12, nearly four months after the fight. The Washington D.C. commission accepted Bute’s contamination alibi but still issued a six-month suspension and $50,000 fine.
