One must remember that while there is no particular age where kids should be able to learn phonics, 
However, there are different levels of phonics.  
The basic level is learning to recognize letters and the sounds that those letters make.  
Thereafter, kids learn about multiple sounds, blended sounds, and putting those sounds together into words

Even though different phonics programs follow multiple ways to teach phonics but the best order to teach letter sounds should be ones that allow kids to start reading words easily and as soon as possible.
Explicit teaching of both letters and sounds is important.

When it comes to teaching phonics, the following 5 principles apply: 
Principle 1  
Introducing sounds that are continuous instead of stop sounds and can be easily pronounced by the kids. For example, m, s, and f can be stretched, resulting in an easier blending of sounds.  
Consequently, these sounds are mostly introduced early in phonics-based programs. 
Principle 2 
Introduction of more commonly used letters in the beginning  
Taking an example, m, s, f, c, and t is more commonly used than z and x. 
Principle 3 
Introducing a minimum of 1 or 2 short vowels early in the program. 
Repetition is the key while the child must be taught vowel sounds first for blending sounds to read words. 
Principle 4 
Teaching new phonics sounds step by step, reinforcing previous sounds and repetition is important. 
Principle 5 
You should avoid teaching similar letters together as the kids tend to get confused.

Well, Phonics is the SCIENCE of sounds that are applied to letters or groups of letters known as Phonograms. 
As a parent, you should be aware that without the usage of Phonics, the love for reading is slowly developed, and reading comprehension is limited.
But, why is Phonics so important for reading?
That’s because, it helps the kids to easily convert letters or combinations of letters from sounds to words, learned as “Word Families” and “ Spelling rules” so that they don’t forget them.

The reality is that Learning to read in English is quite difficult if you do not know your letter sounds. 
You must be thinking as to why is it so important to know the letter sounds.
Well, the reason is obvious.
Knowing how to pronounce these letter sounds correct is the key to your kid’s reading development.
This helps them with both reading and writing.

Well, there’s no agreement on the number of sounds among the experts. It depends on various factors like dialect and accent. The IPA chart below shows the 44 phonics sounds in English. It comprises 20 vowel sounds and 24 consonant sounds

A phoneme is the smallest unit of sound that we can hear in a word.  
You need to remember that it is important to think in terms of the number of sounds( Phonemes) in a word instead of the number of letters. 
Taking an example, the word Ship has 4 alphabets or letters but 3 Phonemic sounds.

A grapheme is a written representation of a Phoneme. 
However, unlike individual alphabets, they can also be in a pair or a group of letters. 
Taking the same example again, the word Ship has 4 alphabets or letters but 3 Graphemes corresponding to 3 Phonemic sounds.

Diagraph is a two-letter Grapheme.

It’s important to understand the relationship between the phonemes and letters also known as the phoneme-grapheme relationship. 
Knowing the letter-sound relationship is possible by mapping Phonemes to Graphemes in terms of Phonics patterns or Phonemic sounds for letters or groups of letters.
