21.
The 2024 NFL schedule will officially be released on Wednesday, May 15, at 5 p.m. PT. Over the next day and a half, we’ll get plenty of news and hear rumors about the San Francisco 49ers schedule. The NFL loves to make the schedule drop a week-long event, hinting at individual games leading up to Wednesday night.

 22.
We’ll use this post to collect any news and rumors related to the 49ers’ schedule in 2024 so we can keep up with the latest developments. 91.

 92.
 93.
It helps when you have two of the best players at their position

John Kosko of PFF released an article Monday labeling the strongest and weakest position groups in the NFL and has strong praise for two position groups for the 49ers.

 94.
George Kittle is coming off a season in which he led all tight ends in receiving yards, making the 49ers' tight end group the strongest in the NFL.

 95.
Here is what Kosko said about his ranking of the 49ers tight end room:

 96.

 97.
“Tight-end rooms are generally dominated by one player. We saw the Buffalo Bills draft Dalton Kincaid in 2023, adding him to a group that already had a productive tight end in Dawson Knox. What ensued was a significant decrease in targets for Knox as Kincaid took over the top spot.

 98.
The 49ers earn the “strongest” title because George Kittle is arguably the best tight end in the NFL, right now. Travis Kelce is almost 35 years old and still productive, but we saw a decline in his play in 2023. Kittle’s 87.7 grade last year was tops in the NFL as he excelled as a receiver and a run blocker. While Kittle will turn 31 in 2024, he’s still playing at an extremely high level.”

 99.

 100.
While Kelce was Patrick Mahomes’ number one target, Kosko still contends Kittle is playing at a higher level at age 31. It is hard to argue with the logic considering Kittle isn’t the primary option in the 49ers offense.

 101.
Kosko labeled the second group as the strongest in the NFL, the 49ers linebackers, while acknowledging that the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets group isn’t far behind.

 102.
Here’s Kosko’s reasoning:

 103.

“The New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens have arguments for the strongest linebacker group, but Fred Warner‘s star power and Dre Greenlaw‘s consistency push the 49ers ahead. Warner has emerged as the best linebacker in the NFL over the past few years, as his 90.2 overall grade in 2023 attests to. Greenlaw complements Warner with a strong run defense and coverage skills. The 49ers’ linebacker unit boasts an 89.7 overall grade over the past two years, showing the consistency of the two players roaming the middle of the field.”

 104.
While there is no doubt the duo of Warner and Greenlaw is the best in football, the only concern and question is how Greenlaw will return from his Achilles injury suffered during the Super Bowl.

 105.
The 49ers have a top-heavy roster of the best players at their positions heading into the 2024 season. Media and analysts can all agree on these rankings.

 124.
 125.
The corresponding move was to waive Corey Luciano and Earnest Brown IV

The San Francisco 49ers officially announced the signings of defensive tackle Shakel Brown and offensive tackle Chris Hubbard to one-year contracts. The corresponding move was to waive defensive lineman Earnest Brown IV and offensive lineman Corey Luciano. That puts the Niners back under the 90-man roster limit.

 126.
Luciano spent time on the practice squad last season and was elevated to the active roster in November. Luciano appeared in two games with the 49ers after originally signing with the team as an undrafted free agent in May 2023 after the NFL Draft. Brown IV signed with San Francisco on a futures contract this past February.

 127.
The 49ers must’ve kept a close on on Shakel Brown. He was in Santa Clara for a pre-draft visit. As was the case with the 2024 draft class, Brown is on the older side for a prospect entering the NFL. He’s 25 entering his second season.

 128.
Hubbard is not only competing for a roster spot, but playing time. This will be Hubbard’s 11th NFL season. It’s worth noting that he has playoff experience as well. He started six postseason games. Last year, he started the first nine games of the season with the Tennesee Titans. We’ll reach out to Titans fans for more on Hubbard.

 145.
Photo by Focus on Sport/Getty Images

 146.

 147.
 148.
We are continuing to highlight what makes the 49ers passing offense thrive.

In the days and weeks leading up to training camp, we will continue our series, breaking down the 49ers offense from last season. The previous breakdown was about passing concepts for Ricky Pearsall and Jacob Cowing to take advantage of. This breakdown is about five passing concepts run to perfection by Brock Purdy.

 149.
Arches/Return

 150.
Generally, the arches concept pairs an angle route from the backfield (run by Jordan Mason) with a shallow drag from the outside receiver (run by Brandon Aiyuk). Shanahan adds a return route from Kyle Juszczyk as his variation to the old-school concept. Deebo Samuel will use fast motion to run a clear out route, with George Kittle running an out route, which turns this concept into a pure progression.

 151.
In the video, Purdy’s helmet goes through the progressions. Kittle’s route is wiped by #25. Purdy goes to the shallow route to Aiyuk and smoothly works back to Mason for the completion. This concept is a perfect marriage of playmakers and Purdy’s comfort level.

 152.

 153.
 154.

 155.

 156.
Double Stick Concept

 157.
This concept is called on third down and is a half-of-the-field pre-snap diagnosis by Purdy. Based on the defense's pre-snap look, one side of the field is cut off. Essentially, Purdy can choose a side to attack. Purdy’s main concern is the free safety. If the free safety cheats down to the box, Purdy will attack one-on-one with Aiyuk.

 158.
On the right side of the field, there is a double stick route combo with Kittle and Ray-Ray McCloud. Samuel runs a pure clear-out route. Aiyuk is pressed, but Purdy's decision is made based on the free safety. The back-shoulder throw is perfectly timed and turns into a huge conversion on third down.

 159.

 160.

 163.
Deep Over/Search Concept

 164.
This concept is a designed shot play by Kyle Shanahan. Aiyuk will run the deep-over route, with Kittle running the search route over the middle to occupy the boundary corner. Arizona is in a single high safety look, and Christian McCaffrey’s motion draws the safety closest to the line of scrimmage, the boundary corner, and the single high safety.

 165.
McCaffrey’s motion removes the corner that could carry Aiyuk’s route, but Aiyuk is free to run and cross the safety’s face for the huge gain. Aiyuk is flipped to the other side of the field since this look is meant to emulate a vertical flood concept.

 166.
This is a prime example of McCaffrey's gravity and why motion is so important in the Shanahan offense.

 167.

 170.

 171.
H Choice/Levels Concept

 172.
With all the discussion about Purdy and Jordan Love, I thought I’d use two concepts called in the divisional round. The choice route is given to McCaffrey, who identifies, along with Purdy, the cover two look to the weak side.

 173.
If the defense squeezes the choice route, the levels side will hi-lo the hook defender in cover three. Purdy and McCaffrey are on the same page, and McCaffrey correctly sits the route down for an easy ten-yard gain. Unlike other concepts, this isn’t a check-down. McCaffrey is the first read in the progression.

 174.

 175.
 176.

 177.

 178.
Hi Cross/Low Cross Concept

 179.
When people say Shanahan’s scheme gets players open, this is an example. The front side will feature two clear-out routes from Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings paired with a deep over from McCloud.

 180.
Kittle is the primary read with the low cross. After the three routes clear out the space for his route, there is nothing but grass in front of Kittle. McCaffrey runs a choice route out of the backfield, but this time, it is a check-down option.

 181.
Purdy’s throw is right on time, and Kittle does the rest.

 182.

 206.
 207.
We’ll know the dates once the schedule comes out

As we prepare for the San Francisco 49ers schedule, they’ll compete against a team that’s been a playoff contender for the past decade during the preseason. Jeff Duncan of The Times-Picayune states that the Niners will hold joint practices against the New Orleans Saints.

 208.
The date will be known when the teams square off in the preseason. For now, the assumption is that the two teams play the second week of the preseason. It’s also to be determined whether these will be open to the public. But joint practices always come around the perfect time when you’re tired of hitting the same person in the same colored jersey for two weeks.

 209.
One of the most exciting aspects of these joint practices will be the test they pose for the secondary. After a couple of weeks of training against the Niners wideouts, they’ll face off against the likes of Chris Olave, Rashid Shaheed, and A.T. Perry, promising some thrilling matchups.

 210.
We’ll get to see Chase Young live in action once again. The Saints have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball to make these practices competitive. Their second-round draft pick, Kool-Aid McKinstry, was thought to be considered by the Niners during the NFL Draft. Kool-Aid, Paulson Adeebo, and Marshon Lattimore are as good of a trio in the secondary you could ask to go against in the preseason.

 211.
The Saints' backup quarterbacks will ring a bell. Former Fresno State QB Jake Haener and South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler figure to see plenty of action during the two—or three-day stretch of practices.

 212.
Joint practices are the most exciting time during the preseason, and this should be no different.

 232.
The Jets are projected to be one of if not the best team in the AFC

When there was a team from New York on the schedule, you could pencil it in as a primetime matchup for the San Francisco 49ers. We predicted the Niners would face the Jets, but thought it might be later in the year.

 233.
Nope. Aaron Rodgers is coming to Santa Clara, and the Monday Night Football opener will feature the teams many believe will be the best two in the NFL in 2024.

 234.
September 9. 5:20 p.m. PT. Aaron Rodgers, Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, Mike Williams, Breece Hall, Quinnen Williams, and a few old friends in DJ Reed, Javon Kinlaw, Solomon Thomas, and Robert Saleh will make the trip to the Bay Area in what figures to be an entertaining matchup to open the season.

 235.
That’s a fun way to start the season. If he starts, Dominick Puni’s “Welcome to the NFL” is against one of the best defensive lines and defensive tackles in the NFL. Ricky Pearsall? Here’s the top cornerback tandem. The first-year players will learn quickly what it’s like to play in the NFL.

 236.
We’re likely to get a few more schedule leaks before the official release on Wednesday evening.

 256.
Competition for Colton McKivitz?

The San Francisco 49ers left the NFL Draft without an offensive tackle. They felt that no player was ready to compete or potentially start right away.

 257.
The Niners added a veteran option Tuesday morning. Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the 49ers are signing former Tennessee Titans offensive tackle Chris Hubbard, who started nine games last year before landing on the injured reserve. Hubbard, who signed a one-year deal worth $1.375 million, is getting swing tackle money.

 258.
The 33-year-old has not played in double-digit games since 2019, when he was with the Cleveland Browns. Last year, Hubbard’s blown block percentage was 3.2 percent, which was lower than 49ers right tackle Colton McKivitz (4 percent). Hubbard also did not have any penalties, but did allow four sacks, per Sports Info Solutions.

 259.
Hubbard, McKivitz, Brandon Parker, and Jaylon Moore are all competing for the right tackle spot. This also helps solidify Dominck Puni’s spot inside at guard.

 260.
Hubbard has started 58 games in his career over ten years. He spent four years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and five with the Browns. His contract could be viewed as a “prove it” coming off a season-ending injury that cost him the second half of 2023. But his experience suggests he can give McKivitz some much-needed competition.

 278.

 279.
 280.
Jared Goff just became an even wealthier man on Monday

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy enters the 2024 season with the opportunity to earn a contract of a lifetime. If Purdy performs near the level he did in 2023, the Niners will have little choice but to make him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL.

 281.
Regardless of the 49ers' intentions, the market will ultimately dictate the value of Purdy's contract. As other players continue to get paid, the price for Purdy fluctuates. The number the Niners had in mind on Sunday is undoubtedly different after the latest quarterback extension.

 282.
The Detroit Lions paid Jared Goff an extension worth $212 million, including $170 million guaranteed over four years. Goff turns 30 in October. Purdy won’t be 30 until 2029.

 283.
The Lions are fresh off a franchise-altering season. Goff was always going to get his money. Detroit isn’t going to move on from a quarterback who helped lead them to an NFC Championship berth. Goff is entering his ninth season as a Pro.

 284.
Winning is the end game. Detroit was willing to give that quarterback $42.5 million guaranteed annually for the next four years because Goff is good enough to win with.

 285.
An optimist would say Daniel Jones has had two quality seasons out of five, and the New York Giants gave him $105 million guaranteed.

 286.
After a historic performance in the Super Bowl, the Philadelphia Eagles made Jalen Hurts the highest-paid player in NFL history, with $179 million guaranteed.

 287.
Purdy’s floor is an NFC Championship game in two playoff runs, but those come with a Trent Williams-sized asterisk. One of the greatest “What Ifs” in recent NFL history will be: What if Purdy is able to complete the NFC Championship with the ability to throw the forward pass?

 288.
The ball is at midfield on the opening drive. The Eagles punted their next three drives. DeMeco Ryans was the best defensive coordinator in football during the 2022 season. Based on the rosters and how each team had performed up to then, it’s not going out on a limb to side with Kyle Shanahan over Nick Sirianni.

 289.
Back to the asterisks. That injury cost Purdy last offseason. The 49ers have evidence of Purdy winning when he came in cold off the bench and coming off a serious season-ending type of injury.

 290.
Now, he has arguably the deepest wide receiver core in the NFL and there were no changes to an offense that led the NFL in most meaningful offensive categories. Purdy is in the driver’s seat.

 291.
Are you the type of quarterback a team wins with or because of? That’s what 2024 is for Brock. Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, and Josh Allen are in their own tier. Those are quarterbacks that you win because of.

 292.
Purdy, Hurts, and Goff will likely be lumped into the same tier as Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, whose contract voids after this year. If Purdy duplicates his play from a season ago, the 49ers’ hands will be tied — especially if it ends in a Super Bowl win.

 293.
We can’t ignore the process because of a favorable result. Purdy completed less than 50 percent of his passes and threw an interception in the first half of the NFC Championship game. The week prior, the rain and weather impacted Purdy’s effectiveness and aggressiveness down the field. It wasn’t just the first half. Purdy played his worst three quarters of the season before a memorable fourth quarter.

 294.
Purdy made plays in the second half of each playoff game, including using his legs to avoid pass rushers and run for first downs. Purdy has the intangibles and “it” factor that could financially put him in the Burrow tier. Brock went 13-for-16 in the second half of a playoff game when his team needed him the most.

 295.
While there are throws he’d want back, Purdy is low on the laundry list of reasons the 49ers lost the Super Bowl. When it matters, Purdy has come through. You can’t say the same for Prescott, which is why it won’t be surprising if he gets paid more than Dak next offseason.

 296.
If Goff’s contract is the parking lot for the ballpark that Purdy’s contract is in, $50-55 million isn’t absurd to think about. Suppose the third time is a charm for Purdy in the playoffs. In that case, the conversation shifts from potentially being the highest-paid quarterback— a statement the 49ers never considered when they drafted Purdy in the seventh round.
