Considering their focus on cinema cameras, this NAB news might be surprising.

At NAB 2024 this year ARRI was showing off their new LIVE attachment for the ALEXA 35. This attachment can link up to your traditional ALEXA 35 camera body, but super powers it up for live broadcast specific shoots like sporting events and concert shoots.

Let's learn a little bit more with our first-hand NAB coverage in the video below.

NAB 2024: Hands On With the Brand New Arri Alexa 35 Live

Continuing our coverage with Cinematography for Actors, we get to check the live attachment called the LPS1.

As you can see in the video, the attachment enhances the ALEXA 35 with 17 stops, brand new ARRI color features, multiple video return features, and a ton more. And while the big camera and AI news might take the majority of the focus for many from this year’s conference, rest assured the coolest stuff came from the lighting and film gear brands.

And with Tarantino's personal limit on the number of movies he's going to direct, it's especially sad to miss out on a movie that he was putting together.

When The Movie Critic was announced as Tarantino's tenth and final film, it was the subject of a tornado of rumors. Everyone wanted to know what note the famed director would go out on.

We had a fervor of casting ideas and plot elements, and then the heartbreaking story that the movie was scrapped.

So today, I want to go through what we had learned and what the plot of the perspective movie was going to be.

Let's dive in.

Quentin Tarantino Passing on 'The Movie Critic' as Final Film

When Quentin Tarantino announced his plans for The Movie Critic, we were teased with a story about a cynical, disillusioned movie critic writing for a pornographic magazine in the 1970s. It might have followed his journey towards redemption or a deeper exploration of his psyche.

People compared the idea to Taxi Driver and proposed that it would star Paul Walter Hauser or comedian Shane Gillis. We know that he met with Olivia Wilde for an undisclosed reasons, was it to star in this movie or just chat? Hard to tell.

But then we got an attachment of Brad Pitt, and people wondered if he was coming back to play Cliff Booth, from Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood later in life.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has an entire breakdown where it shows the pivot from that kind of movie, into a possible metafilm with a Tarantino "goodbye metaverse".

So, how would that have looked?

Well, Tarantino could have included actors from his past films reprising roles or appearing as fictional versions of themselves, perhaps even crossing over into new narratives via "movies within a movie".

And as the owner of a couple theaters in Los Angeles, we might have seen them all reuniting at the New Beverly or Vista. Or maybe there would be a younger Tarantino character in this, who gets influenced by the people he meets and then grows up to make movies.

The sky was the limit on what this could be, and it appears that after some thought, Tarantino decided to scrap the project entirely, and go back to the drawing board for his tenth film.

That means we have no real ideas about what he wants to do. And we cannot be sure when he'll come back out with another idea.

Tarantino is one of the most important working filmmakers, and part of a generation of original filmmakers that will be sad to lose. I hope he takes his time and makes whatever he wants next, whether it's next year or in a decade.

I am not eager for the era of Quentin Tarantino to be over.

Let me know what you think in the comments!

We Chat With Open Drives at NAB 2024

He helped create argueably the greatest sitcom of all time with Larry David, Seinfeld, and has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry as a whole.

Now, he's branching out into feature films with Unfrosted, a Pop-Tart movie that debuts on Netflix.

I thought I had done some cool stuff, but it was nothing like the way these people work. They’re so dead serious! They don’t have any idea that the movie business is over. They have no idea.”

After being pushed to elaborate on the part about movies being over, Seinfeld replied, “Film doesn’t occupy the pinnacle in the social, cultural hierarchy that it did for most of our lives. When a movie came out, if it was good, we all went to see it. We all discussed it. We quoted lines and scenes we liked. Now we’re walking through a fire hose of water, just trying to see.”

I thought this was an interesting quote. I do think, in some sense, the movie business of old is over. and I totally get the firehose metaphor. In the past, our entertainment came from voices and TV.

Everyone went to see the big movies and watched the big TV shows, and they talked about them at the water cooler.

That still happens, to some degree, but with the advent of the iPhone and social media, we've become absorbed in so many other things now.

We're constantly sprayed in the face with entertainment. Whether that's sharing reels or memes or just tweeting and posting.

But I also think that movies like last year's Barbie and Oppenheimer still proved that cinema can dominate culture. In fact, movies have to be much more impactful now to break through all of that.

Let me know what you think in the comments.

We Got the Scoop From Wooden Camera on Their Burano Build

Recently, he worked with Martin Scorsese's archival film project to help restore classic cartoon short films from 1920 to 1940 that otherwise could have been lost.

We were lucky enough to see this shorts block screened at TCM this weekend where Macfarlane introduced the shorts and talked a bit about the restoration process a bit before the premiere of Back From The Ink: Restored Animated Shorts (2024).

Check out the intro below!

Seth MacFarlane Introducing Restored Animated Shorts at TCM

Your browser does not support the video tag.
Seth Macfarlane on why he chose these films to restore:

"It's it's it's high art in so many cases. And particularly when it comes to animation, you know, there's there's a there's a philosophy that I think Scorsese you mentioned this at one point.

I maybe attributed it to him at some point. I think it was him that said, look, you know, if there's a film that needs preserving or that he's restoring, and it's not necessarily the greatest film ever made that films like those first.

So, yeah, like Gone With the Wind and my, you know, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and the ladder is, is deteriorating that that gets put in the oven for him.
I kind of like that it just kind of so boldly because it's so subjective. You know, everyone has an opinion about the great film. So I always kind of appreciate and respect that, that, that philosophy.

If you're going to say that because some people imagine it was most important to save the most important films were really their own."

We Drop By Teradek for the Latest in Wireless On-Set Solutions

As described below, this is imperative for working on set when a transmission delay could crucially set you back on production.

Watch our interview with Teradek at NAB 2024 below conducted by Cinematography for Actors and our very own Jourdan Aldredge.

NAB 2024: Check in With the Latest From Teradek

We check out the Bolt 6 and Ace 750 at Teradek's NAB booth and breakdown the differences between the two products.

Essentially, the Ace 750 is the more low budget, indie filmmaking option, while the Bolt 6 is more standard for studio filmmaking and television.

We also get to check out the model for Teradek TV—a less quick wireless option more suited for a client, less suited for a crew member that could benefit from their zero delay hardware. Until recently, I didn't know there was a term for this strategy.

It's called a 'thematic echo,' and it actually is a lot deeper than just writing something twice, with changes.

Today, I want to go over the term, look into its uses, and talk about how you can effectively add them to your screenplays.

Let's dive in.

Defining Thematic Echo

A thematic echo is a powerful storytelling technique that reinforces a screenplay's central message by strategically repeating motifs, symbols, or situations throughout the narrative.

These "echoes" deepen the audience's understanding of the theme and its significance to the characters' journeys.

The Key Elements of a Thematic Echo

By weaving thematic echoes into the narrative, screenwriters can create a sense of cohesion and build a richer thematic tapestry.

Before you try to repeat a scene, you should think about these core parts so you can make sure it matters.

Theme: The core idea or message your screenplay explores.

Motif: A recurring element, image, or idea that contributes to the theme.

Symbol: An object, character, or situation that represents a deeper meaning beyond its literal form.

Echo: The repetition of a motif, symbol, or situation throughout the screenplay.

Examples of Thematic Echos

Sometimes, the easiest way to understand these terms is to look at them in action. so we should check out some clear examples of echos in action.

The Lion King: Simba's journey echoes his father Mufasa's, highlighting the importance of responsibility and facing challenges. And the idea of returning to pride rock as a child and as an adult layersi n the growth of the character.

Breaking Bad: The constant use of blue throughout the series (clothing, meth, pool) echoes the corruption and descent of Walter White. And also, think about how we show the changes in Walt as we go back and forth at the car wash, from a place he's mistreated to a place he rules with an iron fist.

Parasite: The recurring image of stairs emphasizes the societal divide and the characters' struggle to climb the social ladder.

How to Formulate Your Own Thematic Echo

If you want to make sure your screenplay has these moments, we have a few strategies that can help you on the path.

Identify Your Theme: What is the central message you want your screenplay to convey?

Develop Motifs and Symbols: Brainstorm elements that visually or metaphorically represent your theme.

Strategic Placement: Introduce your motifs and symbols early and then strategically repeat them throughout the story at key turning points or moments of character growth.

Evolution and Variation: Don't simply repeat the echo verbatim. Allow it to evolve as the story progresses, reflecting the characters' journeys or the changing thematic weight.

All of this feels like stuff you might add when rewriting the script. It's the accouterments you put in to take your story from good to great. And the flourishes that really showcase your writing abilities.

Hopefully, you can tackle these and make sure they help highlight the message inside your story.

Let me know what you think in the comments.

Live from NAB 2024: Blackmagic's CEO on the URSA Cine 12K & Future of AI

 56.

As film festivals and trade shows continue to rebound back to pre-pandemic levels, the vibe at NAB this year was absolutely one that felt like brands were fully back in action and ready to send their newest products and gear innovations.

 57.
One booth that brought as much pre-pandemic news and features as anyone else was the Aputure booth, which had three new products to showcase including the Aputure INFINIMAT line, Sidus One, and Sidus Link Pro.

 58.
Let’s take a look at the latest from Aputure from our visit with the team at NAB 2024.

The Latest from Aputure at NAB 2024

As you can see in our video below where our video coverage hosts from Cinematography for Actors chats with the Aptuure team, there’s a lot to catch up on and go over from their booth this year. The big highlight is the new INFINIMAT line, which—according to Aputure—is basically their version of a mat light that everybody’s been waiting for.

 59.
Here are the highlights:

Aputure INFINIMAT

With these new INFINIMATs in particular, Aputure was simply looking to build upon the already popular light mat form factor, but by adding more options to configure them in the conventional thin mat form, or to expand using the fixture's built-in inflatable diffusion.

 60.
The INFINIMATs offer a mat system that is quick to set up and can be used either solo or with a team. Each panel also features pixel color control and the ability to control multiple lights from a single control box. They also offer multi-light versatility, which when combined with each panel's singular high output, will allow them to be both an everyday workhorse for small spaces or patched together with pixel-mapping to be a film set's largest specialty light.

The Sidus Ecosystem

Aputure also unveiled a new Sidus Link Pro that is set to build upon their Sidus Link app, further utilizing an intuitive graphical user interface instead of the dense command-line computer programming methods utilized by traditional lighting consoles to give creatives control of their lighting.

 61.
Aputure users will also now have the ability to perform instantaneous cue-based controls across multiple lights with zero delay, a feature that was previously only possible through console control, and the ability to connect to any CRMX-enabled fixture (a capability expanded by Sidus One).

 62.
The Sidus Link Pro app, when joined with the Sidus One, will further give smaller facilities and independent filmmakers a latency-free, intuitive, and powerful integrated control system without needing to spend huge amounts of time learning console programming.

 63.
You can find full pricing and availability for these new Aputure products on their site here.

No Film School's coverage of NAB 2024 is brought to you by Blackmagic Design.

Get Your Horror Feature Funded With Unknown Nightmare

 64.

Need a new, not-so-scary way to get your horror feature funded but in a frightening spot? Luckily, Thomas Verdi (Founder of The Film Fund) is here to save you from the beast of low funds.

Verdi's new AI-powered horror film development program Unknown Nightmare has a simple business model:

Submit a film pitch. Gain Equity. Produce a film.

The ultimate goal is to discover new screenwriters as well as find funding for their films, rather than staying within secular stages of the filmmaking process.

How Does Unknown Nightmare Work?

In a nutshell, Unknown Nightmare's goal is to equity crowdfund $250,000 from industry investor and producers who will submit a pitch package for an original horror film.

Unknown Nightmare uses patent-pending software called ProducerScore, written by The Film Fund founder Thomas Verdi, to project potential box-office revenue scores for submitted screenplays based on real-world, historical horror film box office data.

The AI angle? The software is trained on previously-produced screenplays and correlates submitted horror screenplays with real-world, historical box office performance. Essentially, aggregating date from box office numbers and seeing how scripts submitted to Unknown Nightmare compare on paper.

From there, ProducerScore software uses this trained AI model to analyze new horror screenplays and project box office revenues for each original horror screenplay submitted by interested investors and producers.

According to Verdi, the beauty of ProducerScore is that it can do this screenplay analysis in bulk, in a matter of minutes, and then rank the screenplays quickly and efficiently.

Finally, the ten screenplays with the highest-projected box office revenues will be pitched to horror distribution companies, and Unknown Nightmare will work with the distributor to select a film package to produce. Their goal is to raise enough funding to produce one film, but if a distributor wants to produce more, or if they are able to raise more money, ideally they will option the top ten screenplays.

Explaining the Film Fund: From Shorts to Features

Verdi’s first company, The Film Fund, operates via a simple contest format: entrants write and submit one sentence pitching their short film along with a small entry fee for a chance to receive up to $10,000 in funding to help produce their short film. The prize funding comes from the entry fees submitted by the filmmakers with their pitches.

With Unknown Nightmare, The Film Fund’s existing community can finally get involved in feature film funding and development and gain real equity by doing so, not just enter a contest for a chance to get funding for a short film. The Film Fund will continue to operate with its same model for short films, but there’s a bigger market available for feature films. Filmmakers can get a real return on their investment when they submit a feature film package with Unknown Nightmare.

What about that Scary-Sounding AI Program ProducerScore?

As the film community, AI scares us.

Unknown Nightmare promises that ProducerScore does not use AI to replace writers, directors, or producers, and the software does not generate screenplays.

What this ProducerScore software allows Unknown Nightmare to do is slim the number of screenplays read for easier selecting, trained on an extensive dataset of real horror screenplays that have been produced and released as theatrically-screened feature films. With this strategy, Unknown Nightmare can narrow a large stack of screenplays it will receive to the top-performing ones as evaluated by the software.

But What If I Submit and I Don't Get Selected?

If you submit a package and it’s not selected to be produced, you still have equity in the film that does get produced.

Unknown Nightmare is an innovative investment production strategy, not a contest-based model like The Film Fund. If you're still interested in The Film Fund's shorts-based contest model it will very much still be active, but Unknown Nightmare is distinguishing itself with features so that filmmakers submitting have a more equity.

With features, the more skin in the game, the better.

Unknown Nightmare Pitch

67.

While there's a lot to be said about brand loyalty from a cost-efficiency standpoint (not that adapters are that expensive, per se), it does make sense to pick a brand and go with their products for most of your needs. This helps streamline your workflows and ensures that all parts of your filmmaking process are optimized for one another.

That's why for this "Deals of the Week," we're looking at three XF lenses that would be ideal for Fujifilm caemras being used by videography shooters and filmmakers. These lenses range from fast prime lenses to versatile zoom options so you hsould be covered for whatever your video needs end up being.

Let's dive in.

FUJIFILM XF 33mm f/1.4

The Fujifilm XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR is a 50mm-equivalent lens known for its bright and fast f/1.4 maximum aperture. This design benefits working in difficult lighting conditions and also affords greater control over depth of field for isolating subject matter and using selective focus techniques.

The optical design employs two aspherical elements, which reduces distortion and spherical aberrations in order to achieve higher sharpness and accurate rendering. Three ED elements are also featured, which reduce flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy. This ensures unmatched resolution and fresh, vibrant color.

FUJIFILM XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR Lens

Offering a natural perspective along with a fast maximum aperture, the XF 33mm f/1.4 R LM WR from FUJIFILM is a 50mm-equivalent lens characterized by its bright f/1.4 maximum aperture.

FUJIFILM XF 16-55mm f/2.8

Another XF option, the Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR is an APS-C format standard zoom lens designed for the various FUJIFILM X-Mount mirrorless cameras.
