This initiative aims to equip workers and supply chain organisations with the necessary expertise to provide maintenance and support for nuclear-powered submarines.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity to showcase NSAN's collaborative approach to skills for nuclear and demonstrate how the Nuclear Training Network is working with sector employers to develop and deliver high-quality training solutions.

Despite the geographical distance, common challenges such as attracting young talent to STEM roles and supporting early career entrants were shared and discussed. 224.
Trawsfynydd SMR project takes a step forward as Cwmni Egino completes early development

 225.

 226.

 227.

NSAN member Cwmni Egino, the company behind plans to develop the former nuclear power station in Trawsfynydd, has completed its first phase of development work confirming the viability of deploying Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) at the site.

Development work undertaken by Cwmni Egino to date has established that land owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) could be suitable for a range of SMR technologies with the potential to generate up to 1GW of electricity.

Building on the work of the Snowdonia Enterprise Zone which identified the potential for SMR deployment, Cwmni Egino was set up by Welsh Government to promote economic and social regeneration by driving future development at Trawsfynydd.

It is estimated that SMRs at Trawsfynydd could create over 400 long-term jobs in the local area and over £600m GVA for North West Wales and £1.3bn GVA for the whole of Wales during over an operational life of 60 years. It would also create thousands of additional jobs during the construction stage, as well as through the Welsh and UK supply chains.

As the UK’s first site-specific development company for SMRs, Cwmni Egino has set its sights on being the first SMR project approved by the UK Government with construction starting before the end of the decade.

Alan Raymant, Cwmni Egino Chief Executive said: “In addition to meeting our energy needs and net zero targets, deploying SMRs at Trawsfynydd offers a huge inward investment opportunity for Wales. This is aligned with key policies and priorities of both the UK and Welsh Governments.

“We believe that Trawsfynydd presents the first, most credible opportunity to kick start a long-term programme of SMR projects in the UK, and catalyse significant economic growth locally, regionally and nationally. Cwmni Egino provides a development vehicle to drive this forward.

“Our plans are more advanced than other sites suited to small scale nuclear, and the work we’ve done over the past 12 months gives us added confidence that we can successfully deliver a project at Traws. We have already put in place a 5 year development programme which means our project can be ready for approval by the latter part of this decade – in line with the UK Government’s energy security ambitions.”

The company is yet to select a technology partner for the project, and wants to work with Great British Nuclear (GBN), the recently formed UK Government body tasked with leading the UK SMR technology competition.

Alan added: “We’ve already been in discussions with a number of technology providers and there is significant interest in deploying SMR at Trawsfynydd. We will work closely with GBN over the coming months to confirm the technology solution that best suits Trawsfynydd within the overall selection process for the UK.

“The other key area of focus for us now is to secure Government commitment to the next phase of the project. In particular, we need confirmation that Trawsfynydd is one of the projects GBN wants to be developed. This will give us the certainty that we need to unlock this opportunity and access additional development funding.”

Welsh Government Economy Minister Vaughan Gething said: “It’s great news Cwmni Egino has completed the first phase of its work at Trawsfynydd and that genuine progress is being made towards realising the company’s ambition to begin deploying small modular reactors on site by the end the decade.

“We established Cwmni Egino in 2021 so it could lay the groundwork to achieving significant socio-economic benefits for North West Wales and to ensure it achieves this, it’s vitally important Great British Nuclear now engages meaningfully with Cwmni Egino so Trawsfynydd is formally selected as the first SMR site in the UK.”

For more information about Cwmni Egino and the opportunity at Trawsfynydd, download the brochure

 232.
NUVIA UK to deliver a feasibility study for a nuclear medicine production facility in north Wales

 233.

 234.

 235.

NSAN member organisation NUVIA UK has won a contract with the Welsh Government to prepare the feasibility report for the project ARTHUR (Advanced Radioisotope Technology for Health Utility Reactor), in North Wales.

The new Radioisotope Production Facility would produce medical radioisotopes from its own Research Reactor and supply them to Health Service providers across the UK and internationally.

Radioisotopes, also known as radioactive isotopes, are used extensively in health, industrial and research applications. In nuclear medicine, radioisotopes are selected for their chemical and radioactive properties for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. In both cases, the radioisotope is linked to a chemical compound that has the capacity to bind with a specific target (cancerous cells, organs, etc.). The particle or photon emitted during the radioactive decay is used for locating cancer cells (imaging) or directly destroying them (therapy). Most radioisotopes used in nuclear medicine are produced through irradiation in research reactors.

There is an increasing worldwide demand for medical radioisotopes, to meet the cancer diagnostic and therapeutic treatment needs of health service providers, across the UK and internationally. The recent major breakthroughs in nuclear medicine are offering new opportunities for cancer treatment. ARTHUR will significantly enhance the UK’s ability to meet this increasing demand.

The feasibility report is the first step in realising the Welsh Government’s ambition to design, build and operate a facility that will support the UK’s strategy for advanced nuclear medicine.

NUVIA UK has assembled a core team of technical experts that brings together UK and international expertise in the design, planning, licencing, and environmental aspects of research reactors and other nuclear facilities. NUVIA’s team includes NucAdvisor (a sister NUVIA company, part of VINCI), who are specialists in research reactor technology and medical radioisotopes supply, and Hydrock who bring a track record of using innovative and sustainable approaches in nuclear, energy and healthcare markets. The study will explore what is required to achieve a safe, reliable, and cost-effective solution that will meet the growing demands for nuclear medicine in the UK.

NUVIA UK is thrilled to have been awarded this prestigious contract working with the Welsh Government to realise these advances for the good of the whole of the UK.

The creation of a UK radioisotope production facility will:

enable the delivery of the NHS Long-term Plan to significantly increase the number of diagnostic scans, with correspondingly better patient outcomes

support the levelling up agenda by creating STEM jobs in deprived areas within the UK

reposition the UK’s nuclear medicine capability

Tom Jones, CEO NUVIA UK, said:

“The launch of this feasibility study is the first step in re-establishing the UK’s nuclear medical radioisotope production. Global demand is forecast to more than double over the next ten years. The UK has a unique window of opportunity to help meet the increases in both domestic and international demand. We look forward to working with Welsh Government on delivering this exciting technology, which will bring jobs and investment to Wales.”
