20.
It’s an issue schools shouldn’t ignore

Right now Syracuse Orange fans are dealing with the highs and lows of the new college athletics landscape.

  21.
On one hand, Fran Brown has used the transfer portal and NIL to reinvigorate the football program. On the other hand, Adrian Autry has watched five members of last year’s squad hit the transfer portal. If you read the comments here and elsewhere online, the word “loyalty” gets thrown around a lot, and many fans aren’t crazy about the major roster turnover.

  22.
Athletes having the ability to earn money (and change schools without penalty) is a good thing, but it also takes away something that appealed to college sports fans- watching athletes grow over a three to five year period. College sports has lost something which made it different than the pros. I understand that it’s a tough adjustment, but do the schools?

  23.

  25. Photo by Gregory Fisher/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images
  26.

  27.
When you ask Syracuse fans to talk about their favorite players you get many responses which highlight the affinity that grows over time. We think about players like Hakim Warrick or Zaire Franklin who went from overshadowed recruits to professionals. We look at the legacies of Gerry McNamara and Eric Dungey, athletes who could win elections to be Mayor or Onondaga County because of what they did over four years in Orange.

  28.
Winning can gloss over some of these feelings, but if you turn over your roster on an annual basis and you aren’t winning you become the college version of the Jets or the Nets. Putting fans in those new Dome seats becomes even more of a challenge, and that’s before you get to the current NIL landscape.

  29.
Colleges have spent the last few months pleading with fans to donate to their NIL collective(s). Dollars that fans might have spent on tickets or merchandise may be headed to athletes directly, which is great for athletes, but long-term isn’t helping the schools. Boosters have heeded the call to fund rosters, but how long will they show their support without a strong return on investment?

  30.
As schools continue to look for ways to generate more revenue, they need to avoid making the mistake that many have made. Fans of college sports enjoy winning, but many enjoy the aspect of sports that we don’t get elsewhere- the rivalries, the histories, the feeling of watching their own grow before their eyes.

  31.
If schools don’t listen to what’s being said now, they might find it harder to lure fans back in the near future.

  52.
With his eight points the other night, sophomore attack Joey Spallina set a new school record for points in a season by a sophomore. Spallina’s up to 88 points -37 goals and 51 assists) on the season so far (17 games). He surpassed Gary Gait’s sophomore season of 87 points- 70 goals and 17 assists back in 1988.

  59.

  60.
Gait only played 15 games that year so he still holds bragging rights in terms of points per game. Not to mention that the 70 goals might be a record that no other Orange player will ever reach, but that shouldn’t take away from what Spallina has accomplished.

  61.
Despite being left off the All-ACC team, the second-year player has been the catalyst of the Syracuse offense. His 51 assists are almost double the 26 of second on the team Owen Hiltz and if the Orange are going to advance to Memorial Day weekend, it’s clear that they will need Spallina to find ways to deliver against tough competition starting against Denver this Sunday.

  79.
Photo by Grant Halverson/NCAA Photos via Getty Images

  80.

  81.
  82.
Two classes of Orange players are making their final run through May, looking to add to their already amazing careers.

However it all plays out in the next couple weeks, we do know the end is approaching.

  83.
It’s the same end that comes every year in May, but this year is unique.

  84.
The reason, of course, is because this is the year that every team across the country is losing two classes worth of players since this is the first time in four years that the senior class doesn’t have an extra year of eligibility afforded them by the COVID-shortened season of 2020.

  85.
So, this ending is going to be a significant one for the Syracuse Orange, who are set to lose a small squadron of their biggest contributors at year’s end.

  86.
It’s not just the shear number of Orange graduate students and seniors going through their final May as college lacrosse players, but more so the impact that these players have had on the Syracuse program in their four and five years on the Hill.

  87.
The primary grad students are Emma Tyrrell, Kate Mashewske, Hallie Simkins, Bianca Chevarie, Delaney Sweitzer and Savannah Sweitzer. The seniors are Katie Goodale, Natalie Smith, Maddy Baxter and Emma Ward, although Emma has another year of eligibility due to her missing the 2022 season.

  88.
Their combination of team and individual accomplishments have both built upon and re-written portions of the ‘Cuse record book. As a team, they’ve won two ACC regular season titles. They’ve appeared in four NCAA Tournaments, two Final Fours and one national title game. They’ve won almost 80 percent of the games they’ve played (72-19, .791).

  89.
Yes, they’re still currently missing the big prize, but those numbers are nothing to sneer at. The post-COVID era for this program is only surpassed by the 2012-2016 run that went to five straight Final Fours, including two title games, and these classes have been big parts of that success.

  90.
As individuals, they’ve done even better. The program record book looks a lot different than it did before they arrived, and you can’t even attribute that to the extra half year of games in 2020 since most of the grad students barely played that first year anyway.

  91.

  92.

  93.
Trending

Kate Mashewske putting her name in the NCAA record book. And she isn't finished yet! pic.twitter.com/GtvsASlGyP
— Syracuse Women's Lacrosse (@CuseWLAX) May 3, 2024
  94.

  95.
  96.
  97.

  98.
Let’s start with Kate Mashewske, who has officially demolished Kailah Kempney’s previous school record for career draw controls of 439. Kate’s 548 career draws is not just the new standard for SU, it also puts her in the Top 5 for career draw wins in NCAA history.

  99.
Additionally, after she broke the program record for draw controls in a single game on Sunday against Stony Brook with 20, she’s now got 205 this season alone, which puts her just 12 shy of her head coach’s program record for draws in a single season.

  100.
Kate is one of the most successful draw takers ever, and she might not be done re-writing records just yet.

  101.

  102.

  103.
With five caused turnovers in today's win, Katie Goodale breaks the single-season school record with 4⃣0⃣‼️ pic.twitter.com/ELp0wegSUP
— Syracuse Women's Lacrosse (@CuseWLAX) April 24, 2024
  104.

  105.
  106.
  107.

  108.
She’s not the only one looking to stamp her name at the top of a list or two before her career closes. Katie Goodale has already done so this year, and is looking for more.

  109.
Katie has a remarkable 44 caused turnovers this season, which has cruised past the previous single-season school record of 35 previously held by Ella Simkins in 2021. And, with her caused turnover against Stony Brook on Sunday, Katie tied the SU record for career CTs at 101 with Bridget Looney. If she has one more, the record belongs to her.

  110.
She also reached 100 in career ground balls on Sunday, and has now reached the century mark in three different categories for her career, speaking to her versatility: ground balls (100), caused turnovers (101), and draw controls (116).

  111.

  112.

  113.
With five points today, Emma Tyrrell becomes the 11th player in program history to record 200 career points. Congratulations‼️ pic.twitter.com/Y1zWn91VcG
— Syracuse Women's Lacrosse (@CuseWLAX) March 16, 2024
  114.

  115.
  116.
  117.

  118.
While Emma Tyrrell doesn’t find herself at the top of any school records, we know she’s had an amazing career and is one of the most productive players in ‘Cuse history.

  119.
Emma currently ranks ninth in program points with 263 and goals with 190, with the potential to still move up a spot or two before all is said and done. She’s one of only nine players to reach the 250-point mark in an Orange uniform.

  120.
Delaney Sweitzer hasn't been in town as long as everybody else, but she’s still put up some incredible numbers during her stint.

  121.
During her First Team All-American season last year, Delaney clobbered the school record for ground balls in a season with 78, 14 more than Liz Hogan’s 64 in 2010. Her 134 career GBs is just 10 away from the third-most in program history.

  122.
She’s made 326 saves in her Orange career, which ranks her fifth in total saves at SU. To put up these numbers in basically just two years as a starter plus a little bit from her first year in 2022 is pretty amazing. She’s definitely left her mark in between the pipes for this program in a relatively short amount of time.

  123.

  124.

  125.
Congratulations to Natalie Smith on recording her 100th career point in Sunday's victory! pic.twitter.com/5C3NX7yChp
— Syracuse Women's Lacrosse (@CuseWLAX) May 14, 2024
  126.

  127.
  128.
  129.

  130.
Natalie Smith is a classic case of a player who blooms late in her career when she finally gets the chance to play a major role for the team.

  131.
She’s taken full advantage with a fantastic senior season. Natalie came into the year with 34 career goals, and has scored 40 this campaign. Adding to the list of milestones achieved on Sunday, Natalie scored her 100th career point against Stony Brook, 47 of which have come during her stellar senior year.

  132.
While Emma Ward still has another year of eligibility, she is a part of this senior class, and has done remarkable things in just three seasons.

  133.
She currently has 239 career points, which places her just outside the Top 10 in 11th place in ‘Cuse history in just three years. That’s incredible, and around this time next year she might just be looking to place her name up around the all-time greats to wear the Orange.

  134.

  135.

  136.
"You never know what's going to happen at the end of the season, so being able to go back in the Dome one last time is something we'll all cherish." - Emma Tyrrell

See you in the JMA Dome on Thursday! pic.twitter.com/GejM8O7YYJ
— Syracuse Women's Lacrosse (@CuseWLAX) May 12, 2024

  140.

  141.
We’re so close to the end, and yet we have no idea how their story as a group is going to wrap-up.

  142.
Alluding to that fact after Sunday’s game, Emma Tyrrell noted that the players would cherish the opportunity to play in the Dome one last time.

  143.
And for us, it’s a chance to cherish the joy of watching them don the Orange and go out and do their thing for one final run.

  167.
A key reserve for FLJ lands a new home.

Former Syracuse Orange women’s basketball guard Kennedi Perkins announced she will be committing to the Marquette Golden Eagles for the 2024-25 season, becoming the third player from last year’s roster to find a new program after entering the transfer portal.

  168.
Perkins — who played 52 games across two seasons for the Orange — primarily served as a backup guard to All-American Dyaisha Fair but shined as a spark plug off the bench during Syracuse’s successful 2023-24 campaign. While Perkins only averaged 10 minutes per game in her two years with Syracuse, her departure was a pretty notable one considering her growth and theoretical fit on the Orange’s roster for the 2024-25 season.

  175.

  176.
Perkins averaged 2.6 points, 1.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 0.4 steals in 11.1 minutes per game last season. She concludes her time with the Orange averaging 2.7 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.7 assists in 10 minutes per game.

  177.
Heading into her third collegiate year, Perkins will look to fill in at guard for a Marquette team who lost depth at the position this offseason with the departures of Mackenzie Hare (Iowa State), Nia Clark (Cincinatti) and Lee Volker (withdrawn). The Golden Eagles finished 23-9 last season (11-7 versus the Big East) and earned a spot in the 2024 NCAA Tournament as a 10-seed.

  178.
Out of the four players from last year’s team who entered the transfer portal, only former guard Cheyenne McEvans remains uncommitted to another program for next season.

  179.
With another player from last year’s Orange roster confirmed to be on a new team, here is where Perkins’ transfer leaves Syracuse as of this point in the offseason:

  180.

  181.
Four players entered the portal (Perkins, Alyssa Latham, Marilena Triantafylli and McEvans). Three are committed to new teams: Perkins (Marquette), Latham (Tennessee) and Triantafylli (Saint Louis).

  182.
Dyaisha Fair and Alaina Rice, two of Syracuse’s other departures, have each used all of their collegiate eligibility.

  183.
Eight players are projected to return to the Orange: Georgia Woolley, Dominique Camp, Wilson, Wood, Lexi McNabb, Varejão, Sophie Burrows and Madeline Potts (redshirt).

  184.
Coach Felisha Legette-Jack secured two transfer portal commitments to make up for the departures — former Arizona State forward Journey Thompson and former LSU guard Angelica Velez.

  185.
Syracuse will also be bringing in four class of 2024 recruits — (Keira Scott, Ka’Shya Hawkins, Olivia Schmitt and Potts)

  186.

  187.
We’ll have more coverage of where the Orange stand heading into next season once the offseason slow starts to wind down.

  188.
In the meantime, we wish Kennedi the best of luck as she looks to continue her collegiate career with Marquette.

  209.
On Monday, ESPN’s Bill Connelly dropped the 2024 returning production rankings and Syracuse checks in at 16th with 77% of their production returning (or transferring in).

  215.
  216.

  217.
Syracuse is 5th among ACC teams behind Stanford, Virginia Tech, Virginia and SMU. The Orange will host those first two teams next season in the Dome, and will face two other opponents (Boston College and Miami) who are in the top 30.

  218.
Returning production means that Fran Brown’s going to have experienced players as he begins his tenure as head coach. There might be questions on the offensive line, but having Kyle McCord, LeQuint Allen and the returning Oronde Gadsden and Trevor Pena back gives that side of the ball experienced starters at the skill positions. Had Gadsden been available for a full 2023 season, Syracuse would have likely been in the top 10.

  219.
The Orange defense brings the production of Marlowe Wax and Justin Barron back as anchors for Elijah Robinson’s group. Alijah Clark and Duce Chestnut are multiple year starters and Fadil Diggs will bring a veteran presence to the defensive line.

  220.
Syracuse also returns special teams starters Brady Denaburg and Jack Stonehouse, so it’s reasonable for fans to look at all this experience and a favorable schedule and dream of a CFP appearance. None of the Orange’s non-conference opponents are in the top 50 in terms of returning production: Ohio (127th), UNLV (66th) and UConn (97th).

  221.
We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves, but there will once again be an opportunity for Syracuse to get off to a fast start. A veteran team could allow for the Orange to make some noise in Brown’s debut season.

  239.

  240.
  241.
We keep having these discussions because there’s more to be done

Following the Syracuse Orange women’s lacrosse victory over the Stony Brook Seawolves, the post-season press conference from Stony Brook Head Coach Joe Spallina touched on a couple of points that should not be ignored.

  242.

  243.
Just before the 5 minute mark, Spallina talks about his team being sent to play the Orange so early and he makes a good point. The Seawolves entered the NCAA Tournament ranked 7th in the country and they were placed in the same section as the 3rd ranked Orange, a team they had also already played and defeated this season.

  244.
As Spallina mentioned, this wasn’t a Round of 16 match-up and it sure seems like Stony Brook and Niagara were in Syracuse because it was a bus trip for both (and thus cheaper for the NCAA, which pays for post-season travel). It has to be frustrating to consistently get tossed to higher seeds despite where your team finishes the regular season.

  245.
It also wasn’t a reward for the Orange to earn a top seed and have to face a team that had seen them before this season. You’re supposed to be rewarded a bit for being a top seed and geography shouldn’t be a more important factor than the metrics the committee is supposed to use.

  246.
If you go to the 12 minute mark in the above video, Spallina also comments on the facilities for his squad as he departs his press conference. Back in 2021 the NCAA came under fire for the facilities provided for the women’s basketball tournament and how they paled in comparison to the men.

  247.

  248.

@sedonerrr
it’s 2021 and we are still fighting for bits and pieces of equality. #ncaa #inequality #fightforchange
♬ original sound - Sedona Prince

  249.

  250.
This isn’t to put all the blame on Syracuse for Stony Brook having to use a muddy tent over the weekend. The women’s lacrosse team earned the opportunity to host this game and they should get the best accommodations. When weather conditions turned rainy, it’s up to the group which states that student-athlete welfare is their top priority to step in. Spallina was right about it being unfair to his athletes to have to change in a muddy field. That’s on the NCAA to insure that all host sites are providing the appropriate facilities.

  251.
Obviously teams can’t be loaded on and off buses during halftime, but after games there should be suitable locker room areas available. The NCAA has enough money to cover these costs and if you want to have games played on certain days and times so they can be broadcast, it shouldn’t put athletes in situations where they are treated this way.

  252.

  253.

  254.
Stony Brook coach Joe Spallina had quite the postgame presser after his team's loss to Syracuse, including being critical of his team's accommodations in a tent outside the Ensley Center. This video shows what he was not happy about. Space in Ensley is limited due to renovation pic.twitter.com/vQAtGMnDWq
— Brent Axe (@BrentAxeMedia) May 13, 2024

  257.
  258.

  259.
While the promotion and attention given to women’s sports has grown, there are still other areas where the NCAA needs to do a lot more. With more men speaking up about this, there’s a better chance those in charge might take it a bit more seriously.

  280.
Here is another update since our last refresher a month ago.

  281.
Let’s see how Orange alums are currently doing in the MLS and MLS Next Pro.

  282.
Alex Bono | 2012-14 | DC United (MLS) | GK

  283.
Bono has continued in his position as DC United’s #1 option since our last update. Playing every available minute for the club this season, Bono has had some outstanding individual performances despite United’s woeful defensive showings this year. Six saves against NYCFC and four more in a win against Seattle highlight the Syracuse native’s brilliant individual output this season. The goalkeeper is sixth in the league in saves this season and has been one of his side's most important players. Expect him to continue as the clear starter.

  288.
Miles Robinson | 2015-16 | FC Cincinnati (MLS) | CB

  289.
Robinson has also played every available MLS minute since the last update and has been in outstanding form. His Cincinnati side currently ranks as the second-best team in the league and is on a four-game win streak. This record is in no small part thanks to Robinson, who serves as the anchor and most crucial player in what is currently the best defense in the entire MLS with ten conceded in 12 games. With these strong showings, Robinson should be in contention for awards as well as a US National Team call-up for the Copa América this Summer. He will continue as a locked-on starter for Cincinnati.

  295.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, when compared to Robinson, Kamal Miller’s Timbers have been in abysmal form since the early knockings of the season, with no wins in their last eight games. Miller played all 90 minutes in all but one of those games. In the second-to-last game, Miller was dropped from the lineup altogether, demonstrating that his position may be in jeopardy if the team's poor showings continue. According to WhoScored, Miller has been Portland’s lowest-rated player amongst those who have logged 900 or more minutes this season. This poor form, individually and for the team, could put Miller’s starting role for Canada in jeopardy entering this summer’s Copa América. Keep an eye out to see how Miller’s role may change.

  300.
Ryan Raposo | 2018-19 | Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS) | LM/LWB

  301.
Raposo is still featuring as a key rotational piece for a Whitecaps team that sits in fourth place in the MLS Western Conference. The Canadian's individual ability has made him a crucial rotational piece for now and into the foreseeable future for the Whitecaps. This ability was on full display with Raposo’s quality assist for the team’s only goal against the New York Red Bulls in late April. Raposo will continue to look for consistent berths in the team in attempts to solidify his starting position.

  302.

  303.
Deandre Kerr | 2020-21 | Toronto FC (MLS) | ST/LW

  304.
Things have not gone particularly well for Kerr since the last update as he has almost completely lost his spot in the team. Kerr has one of the worst average game rankings on the roster according to WhoScored, and has only played 17 minutes in Toronto’s last four MLS contests. If Kerr wants to maintain his spot in the MLS for the next few years, something will need to change.

  309.
Abdi Salim | 2020-22 | Orlando City (MLS / Next Pro) | CB

  310.
Salim has continued to rotate between a reserve role with the Orlando first team and a more significant role in the MLS Next side. Unfortunately for him, Orlando City’s ongoing run of bad form has led them to continue to lean on their more veteran defenders as they attempt to get their season back on track. Salim is not doing himself any favors with his appearances in MLS Next as he has not been particularly outstanding. Salim will need to up his level if he wants to maintain a spot on the Orlando City squad going forward.

  315.
Levonte Johnson | 2022 | Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS) | LW/RW

  316.
Not much has changed for Johnson since our last update. The stocky attacker, who won the National Championship with the Orange, has continued on as an infrequent substitute for a Vancouver Whitecaps team that sits fourth in the MLS Western Conference. Johnson is unlucky to be competing against many quality attackers for minutes but he has still made his presence felt when possible. Since the last update, Johnson has played 43 minutes in five MLS games. However, Johnson did play the full 90 minutes in the Canadian Championship, which features all of the best teams in Canada. Johnson showed his raw potential by scoring the ‘Caps only two goals of the day including the absolute screamer attached below. Expect Johnson to continue to earn rotational minutes as he certainly has the quality to break into the squad if the chance presents itself.

  317.

  318.
Buster Sjoberg | 2021-23 | Vancouver Whitecaps (Next Pro) | CB

  319.
Since the last update, Sjoberg has solidified himself as a consistent contributor to the Whitecaps 2 squad. The Swede logged 90 minutes in three of the last four games. Unfortunately, all of these games ended in losses. Despite the poor results Sjoberg has had overall strong performances, only conceding three goals across these three games. With the recent results and form, Sjoberg should continue as a valuable player for the Whitecaps in MLS Next Pro.

  320.
Jeorgio Kocevski | 2020-23 | Orlando City (MLS) | CM

  321.
Kocevski’s game log since the last update reads largely the same. The creative midfielder has struggled to break into the Orlando first team which plays a system that has no natural fit for him. Kocevski has been on the bench for all five of Orlando’s matches since the last update but has not played a single minute. It is still overall very promising to see this young player with the first team, so hopes can be held high surrounding Jeo.

  322.
Gabriel Mikina | 2023 | St. Louis City (Next Pro) | CB/CDM

  323.
Gabi Mikina has been putting in some quality performances for St. Louis’ MLS Next Pro side and looks set to continue contributing as a valuable asset to the team. Mikina has played 169 minutes across the team's last three matches, and they have won all three. Mikina’s performances have been solid but not outstanding. Expect him to continue on with St. Louis’ Next Pro side for the season.

  327.

  328.
Josh Belluz | 2023 | Colorado Rapids (Next Pro) | CB

  329.
Belluz has, unfortunately, only played two minutes in Next Pro since the last update. The team has lost all three of these games, so it is somewhat surprising that he is not getting more minutes. Perhaps more might come as the team looks to right the ship and bounce back from this poor run of form. Don’t count Belluz out yet.

  333.

  334.
Nate Edwards | 2023 | Toronto FC (Next Pro) | RWB/RM

  335.
Edwards has been slowly evolving into a key player for TFC2 as he continues to show off the energy and motor that earned him so many supporters in Central New York. Edwards has played 334 of the 450 minutes available to him across five games since the last update, with four of those being starts. A particular skill that Edwards has showcased is his ability to draw fouls in dangerous positions on the wing. Edwards drew seven fouls across the last two games alone. With this good form, expect him to continue as a key contributor for TFC2.——————————————————————————————————————————————

  336.
Clearly, SU alums are having a wide breadth of successes and struggles on their MLS journeys. The likes of Robinson, Raposo, and Edwards are thriving in their respective roles. Meanwhile, players like Kerr, Salim, and Belluz will need to up their games if they want to keep their spots on MLS rosters. Hopefully, we will have good news to report on all of these athletes next time. Stay tuned at Nunes Magician for all updates concerning the past, present, and future of Syracuse men's soccer.

  357.
Taking stock as the 2024 season tips off.

With the 2024 WNBA regular season tipping off Tuesday, there’s no better time to check in on some of the alumnae from the Syracuse Orange women’s basketball team.

  358.
The Orange will certainly see more representation in the WNBA this year with Dyaisha Fair and Kamilla Cardoso both landing roster spots. Let’s take a look across the league to catch you up to speed on the current situations of some familiar Syracuse women’s basketball names.

  359.
Dyaisha Fair - Las Vegas Aces

  360.
After performing at an All-American level in her final collegiate season, Dyaisha Fair earned her way on the Las Vegas Aces after being selected No. 16 overall in the most recent WNBA Draft.

  361.
Fair is joining a well-respected franchise in Las Vegas, which has won the last two WNBA championships. The Aces are led by reigning WNBA Finals MVP A’ja Wilson, who also earned a spot on last year’s All-WNBA first team and won Defensive Player of the Year.

  362.
Based on the current 12-person roster, Fair will certainly start off more as a reserve guard for the Aces. Las Vegas already boasts the guard duo of Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray — who each most recently earned a spot on the All-WNBA second team — as well as WNBA All-Star Kelsey Plum.

  363.
With that said, she’ll have plenty of mentorship with all those great names at guard in addition to head coach Becky Hammon.

  364.

  368.
  369.
  370.

  371.
Las Vegas kicks off its season on Tuesday night versus the Phoenix Mercury.

  372.
Brittney Sykes - Washington Mystics

  373.
Now entering her eighth season in the WNBA, Brittney Sykes will look to continue building off arguably her best year as a pro.

  374.
Sykes, the former Syracuse guard who played in 138 games for the program, played spectacular in her first year with the Washington Mystics after previous stops in Atlanta and Los Angeles. In the 2023 season, Sykes averaged career-highs in points (15.9), rebounds (5.0), assists (3.8), steals (2.1), and minutes per game (31.3). She also landed a spot on last year’s All-Defensive First Team.

  375.
Because of that, it was no surprise she remains on the Mystics after several other roster cuts.

  376.
While the Mystics only finished 19-21 last season, Sykes and the team earned a spot in the WNBA Playoffs in coach Eric Thibault’s first year at the helm.

  377.
Sykes and the Mystics kick off their season on Tuesday night versus the New York Liberty.

  378.

  379.
Kamilla Cardoso - Chicago Sky

  380.
Like Fair, former Syracuse center Kamilla Cardoso also secured a spot on the opening day roster of the Chicago Sky. Chicago selected Cardoso with the No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft, pairing the productive center from South Carolina with LSU star Angel Reese (who was selected No. 7 overall).

  381.
After playing her first collegiate year with the Orange in 2020-21, Cardoso shined under Dawn Staley and served as a key center piece for the South Carolina Gamecocks during their undefeated 2023-24 campaign. Cardoso was named Most Outstanding Player for this past NCAA Tournament and averaged career-highs in points (14.4), rebounds (9.7), games started (32) and field goal percentage (59.4%), among others.

  382.
The Sky finished 18–22 and lost as an eight-seed in the First Round of last year’s playoffs. Cardoso headlines what is a historically good draft class for Chicago, who is looking to quickly retool after winning as much as 26 games just two years ago.

  383.
Emily Engstler - Washington Mystics

  384.
Joining Sykes on the 2024 Mystics roster is former Syracuse guard Emily Engstler, who likewise made the current 12-person roster.

  385.
Engstler, who played three years for the Orange (2019-21) before ending her collegiate career in Louisville, will be playing for her third team in three years this season. She earned a training camp contract in February and did enough to remain with the team for opening day.

  386.

  387.

  388.
So Mystics are now down to 12 with Atkins, Austin, Dolson, Edwards, Hines-Allen, Melbourne, Samuelson, Sykes, Walker-Kimbrough, Richards, Vanloo, Engstler#WNBA
— Kareem Copeland (@kareemcopeland) May 12, 2024
  389.

  390.
  391.
  392.

  393.
Engstler played just 7.8 MPG in 12 games last year for the Minnesota Lynx after originally being selected No. 4 overall in the 2022 WNBA Draft. While the former All-ACC player has struggled to kick off her professional career, Engstler still boasts a chance to be a productive contributor for the Mystics.
