60.
There are some professional speakers that get great footage every time they are video recorded. Then there are those who have video demons hiding in their suitcases and rarely get great footage from their live speaking events.

 61.
In this article, I would like to communicate some tips and techniques to help you get great live speaking footage every time.

 62.
Introduction to the producer or director

 63.
The first thing you must do is meet your producer or director. Who is in charge of the video portion of your event? One way to meet this person is to ask your meeting planner for an introduction. Another is to call the facility where you will be speaking and ask them to introduce you. Either way, meeting the producer or director of your event is the first step in getting great footage.

 64.
You want to begin by thanking them for meeting with you. Tell them you are glad to have their professionalism for your video recording. Tell them your main purpose speaking to this group is to give their audience the best information and value about your expertise.

 65.
Tell them that you understand it is crucial that your wish for a perfect video recording does not interfere with the live audience.

 66.
Live Video recording

 67.
Assure them that you are comfortable if they have to stop you for an unexpected reason if something should go wrong with the sound or video. Let them know how important it for you to have footage of this speaking engagement. Ask them for their suggestions, but remember, they are busy like everyone else. Don’t talk their ear off. Rather, earn their respect. They are like the chief in the kitchen preparing your food.

 68.
Keep in mind as professionals, they charge for their services accordingly. Ask them in advance about any fees associated with you getting a clone of the digital video footage they will be recording. Ask that they do everything possible to make the footage they record first class.

 69.
The Rehearsal

 70.
If at all possible, rehearse before you go on either the day of or the night before. This includes checking the lighting for even, consistent lighting; wireless audio microphone radio frequency drop outs; or interference and equipment functionality.

 71.
Test record a 2 or 3 minute section of your presentation and play it back. Listen to the audio through headphones and view from your confidence monitor or viewfinder. Listen carefully for hums or buzzes. Absolutely no hums or buzzes should be acceptable.

 72.
You will hear room noise and HVAC (heating and cooling) systems. There is not much you can do about that since it is a hotel or meeting facility and not a sound stage!

 73.
About Digital Video Equipment

 74.
Most Digital cameras are tapeless. Format transfer is one of the hardest parts of using your live digital video footage. Try to get your footage in full quality Quicktime format (.MOV file format). If there is a charge for that, it’s probably worth it. Here’s why;

 75.
Various manufactures of digital video cameras use their own proprietary encoding.

 76.
Production companies like Primeau Productions who will be creating your speaker demo video will need to convert that proprietary footage to use for editing in Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro or Avid. More than likely, it will be more cost effective for you to have the live production company do the format conversion.

 77.
If Primeau Productions does the conversion, we will have to search the Internet, locate the proper converting software and reformat that live digital video in our studio before beginning your demo video editing. More than likely, it would be better to have the live production company do the conversion since they have done it before and have the process down. After all, it’s their equipment.

 78.
What other Equipment Should You Expect?

 79.
(2) 400-600 watt lights minimum. More than likely, you will be on a general session stage with plenty of lighting. FYI- white light is best for video. Suggest they not use any color fills unless those colors compliment your skin color. Sometimes blue or red fill lighting will make you look better on camera.

 80.
Is it possible for them to have a back up wireless microphone to use in case your main microphone should fail? Microphone failure is probably the number one reason your video could not turn out.

 81.
Audience reaction microphones

 82.
Our client Steve Rizzo always speaks to the production team before he delivers his presentation to request that audience microphones be strategically placed around the general session room to pick up the audience reaction.

 83.
This signal from these microphones should be sent to an isolated channel on the video recording; separate from your main speaking microphone. That way the post production company or editing team can mix the sound during the editing session.

 84.
You can also use the camera microphone to capture audience reaction/applause and assign to the isolated track or use the B camera to record audience reaction (if you have the luxury of a 2 camera recording).

 85.
The Room Set Up

 86.
Do what you can to make sure the room and stage look good on video. Sometimes the littlest things will make your video look sloppy. Are there tables that can be moved off the stage to give you more room? Anything you can do or say to keep wait staff and other persons from walking around during your presentation?

 87.
If you Hired the Crew to Video Record Your Presentation

 88.
Recommend a stage direction if you have a choice. Position it away from kitchen doors and exit signs. Windows and mirrors could also similarly ruin your shot. If possible, recommend that they build the room set up from the rear forward. Give as much distance from the wall behind the stage if possible. It will then be out of focus. If there is a drape, please make sure your outfit does not blend in with the drape color.

 89.
In the back of the room, set up two risers for the main camera; One riser is for the camera and one for the camera operator. (Avoid footage that is shaky.) Double this for two cameras.

 90.
What does the shot look like in your viewfinder or monitor?

 91.
As a video producer, it is my preference to NOT have a center aisle if at all possible. It adds energy and value to your video footage to see the audience in the shot, even if it is the backs of their heads. If this is not possible, place the camera to one side or the other in the rear of the room instead of shooting straight up the middle, center aisle.

 92.
People are becoming more sensitive to having their group’s faces on camera for your video. Be considerate and make sure what your clients protocol is not violated.

 93.
Take into consideration what the camera shot will look like from each back corner location. If you choose the back right corner because there is electrical outlets readily available, turn the camera on using your battery to take a quick look at the shot before setting up to stay at that location. What do you see in the viewfinder? If there are undesirable exit signs, thermostats or kitchen doors in the shot, move the camera so they are NOT in the shot. Pipe and drape may be worth the investment if you are not happy with the back ground look. Beware, black drape sucks out light but looks better than royal blue and maroon.

 94.
Types of Camera Shots

 95.
Try to arrange your camera “A” shot to have audience presence. If the stage is too high then have your “A” camera capture you on stage. Get a variety of slow push in and pull out shots so your entire recorded speech does not look the same..

 96.
Ask your camera operator to shoot as if their camera were live all the time. You do not have to constantly move in and out…just occasionally. Medium body shot (waist up) a majority of the time.

 97.
It is important that you have movement in the video. If you move around a lot on stage, let the camera operator know. It’s best to stay with a medium to wide shot if you move around a lot while speaking. Do not be as concerned with zooming in and out. If you move around a lot on stage, then the camera operator does not have to do a lot of zooming in and out. Ask them to use their professional judgment. The fact that you spoke to the camera operator and told them what you are looking for will increase your odds in getting great footage.

 98.
Hopefully the room is large enough so the video does not look too compressed and busy. We know this may be out of your control. However, when you arrive and realize the room is too small, ask if your program can be moved to a larger room. One out of ten times one is available and we move. The more room, the better the footage!

 99.
If we are shooting more than one camera, we get a variety of interesting shots with camera two. Some would include larger audience shots; others would be four, three, and two person audience shots. Make sure nobody in your shots is sleeping, looking bored or picking their nose. Find the audience members enjoying themselves and get it on tape. When recording audience shots, stay on the shot for a minimum of 15 seconds-stay longer if you anticipate a punch line. Get as many audience members as possible so all your audience footage does not look the same.

 100.
If you are comfortable, get some other shots of you walking on stage, taken on stage from behind you with the audience in front; side angle shots; quick pans to the audience and back; and shots we could use for a montage or transition or edit. Wide shots from the rear of the room showing the IMAG (image magnification screens) are also desirable.

 101.
If your client is video recording one camera and you would like to add another, ask for permission to bring in another camera operator that will record all “B” roll shots as outlined above.

 102.
When you hire a second camera operator, ask them to keep their camera in manual iris and focus. Set the iris once for the stage area and adjust only if necessary. We do not want video footage that comes in and out of focus constantly throughout the presentation which is what auto focus will do because you are moving around.

 103.
Lighting

 104.
Although lighting is not as crucial as back in the Beta camera days, it is still important.

 105.
If you are bringing in your own crew, lighting should be done from far room left and right as close to the stage as possible. Back of the room lighting will cause shadows behind you. Place your lights extremely wide so that the shadows are out of the shot.

 106.
By placing your lights close to the front of the room and wide, the shadows will be far left and right behind the performer. When you are shooting, these shadows will be out of your shot because you are not shooting extremely wide shots. Try not to have any shadows in the shot. If necessary, use back lighting to help accent the performer and remove any shadows.

 107.
Place the (2) lights against the walls stage left and right and use sandbags or grip tape so if they are bumped they will not fall over.

 108.
Use back light a bit for depth near the back extreme side points of the stage so the lights do not get in the shot.

 109.
Amnesty

 110.
Please give your live producer or director complete amnesty. Ask them to help you look your best. Make sure you don’t have any stray or fly away hair strands before performing. Women, this is especially important for you. How does your lipstick look?

 111.
Men, is your tie straight?

 112.
I know this may be uncomfortable but I promise you we will not mind the feedback. Take one final look in the video monitor before you begin your presentation to make sure you look great.

 113.
No Empty Seats in the Shot!

 114.
You are using this footage to produce a promotional or demo video that will get you business. It is crucial that the footage look exciting and interesting. PLEASE do all you can to avoid empty seats in any of your video shots.

 115.
If we are using two cameras, make sure the second camera (if shooting audience faces) does NOT show empty seats.

 116.
Hide all lavaliere wireless microphone wires; make sure to always use fresh batteries. Please ask the production crew to let you know if something on your person is not right.

 117.
If you use a lavaliere microphone, make sure the microphone capsule does not rub against your jacket, tie or scarf.

 118.
Photographer Notification

 119.
If the group has hired a photographer, please meet with the photographer, introduce yourself, and ask they not get in any of your shots. Of course you can’t help the flash going off. In fact, that looks kind of cool in the video. However, it has to be understood that they stay out of the video by not walking through your shots.

 120.
This entire process should not take you more than one hour including a rehearsal. Primeau Productions believes this is time well spent to do everything you can to make sure an excellent opportunity to get great video footage is not missed. All great speaker demo videos begin with great footage.

 121.
One final thought; if you hate being photographed, try to convince yourself you like to be photographed. Based on our professional experience, we have found that if people hate being photographed or video recorded, their footage will probably look bad. If you embrace the video recording process, smile and love the camera, the audience will love you in the room and at home.

 137.

Millions of people simply want to figure out how take part in a home based employment opportunity. Like so many you are not alone in wanting to experience the freedom and rewards that come with a work at home career. With the evolution of the internet it has become super simple to get started in a home business today. The opportunities are virtually endless with so many high quality niche markets to choose from. If you are new to the idea and are sifting through all of the documentation available and all of the different options available then I think I can help.It wasn’t very long ago that I was looking for a home based employment career myself. I Started the process of educating myself on just about everything online that I could get my hands on. I have tried quite a number of different things and had very little success with the majority of my efforts. After about a 2 year journey and looking at and physically trying dozens of home based employment opportunities I came to realize the absolute best way to generate income online is as an affiliate.Affiliate marketing is actually very straight-forward to get started in and will require very little if no up front capital. Their are literally thousands of affiliate product and information out their that you can promote and sell online and make a very nice living doing so.With a little niche and keyword research and the choosing of a corresponding affiliate product you can be online marketing that product and making an home based income in a very short amount of time.I would be foolish to tell you that you will get rich instantly with affiliate marketing but you can build up your income rather quickly. If you are willing to treat it like an honest business and spend a couple of hours on it daily, then you can be assured that you will start producing an income. As with any new undertaking their will certainly be a learning curve, but affiliate marketing is really very simple to apply. The best part is that you really can get started for little or next to nothing. You can get your hands on some great training courses for free if you spend a little time searching for it. And when you find it you will be well on your way to success.Affiliate marketing really is the simplest and easy way to get started on a home based business. Their are many home based organizations that make a very good living strictly with affiliate marketing. So if you are ready to make the jump into a stay at home profession then take a strong look at being an affiliate marketer.

 205.

Have you ever played with fire? Stupid question right! You would say it is dangerous but think about it. Have you ever witnessed a situation where you had wanted to capture fire in your lens? Photographing fire can be fun and also very tricky. Let me share some tips on basic digital photography for capturing fire and getting better photographs.Light is the main element of a photograph. If I have to describe it in one word it would be ‘Heart’. There are two main sources of light sun and the artificial lights. But have you ever thought about fire as the primary source of light? Fire coming out of a candle or a raging inferno, are these some great moments that you really wish to capture. You can explore a new side to your creativity. Fire can take a lot of forms and each form spells out a different meaning to life. You can describe power, subtlety, warmth and heat from its different forms. There are two basic forms of fire that I have described below. You can experiment with these two forms and bring out your own meaning to life. The first form of fire is a single flame. Now, there isn’t mush problem in shooting a single flame right? It really is simple. But when you attempt capturing the flame on the camera, you would come to know how difficult can it be. Now for this experiment you just require a single candle, a dark place, tripod or a strong surface to hold the camera. Here it is best to shift to manual focus, and keep your focus at the end of the wick. The flame will not be in super focus because it is producing light and is also a 3D object. That means the intensity and the point of focus on it will vary.If your camera has spot meters then use it and take the reading of the flame. The image you will get to see will be darker than normal, slow down the shutter speed and overexpose the frame a little. If you want the photo to have the flame straight then ensure that there are no drafts around to move the flame. When you have figured out the basic digital photography techniques and the shutter speed, you can play around a little by blowing gently and capture the dancing. The next form of fire is the campfires; these are the easiest form of image that you can take. But the main point when you take the photo is to get the shutter speed dialed in. The best way to take the photograph is to go for a longer shutter speed, this will help in blurring the fire and also give the sparks a chance to leave a trail. The shot of a campfire always spreads warmth and a playful attitude of the fire. This is an important point of the basic digital photography. 265.

Medical Sciences refers to the science of the preservation of health as well as the prevention and treatment of disease. Derived from the Latin ars medicina, “the art of healing Medicine”, it is a stream related to health sciences and public life. It is mainly concerned with maintaining or restoring human health through the study, diagnosis, treatment and possible prevention of disease. From time immemorial, this field has been viewed as a prestigious profession. This is one arena where the possibility of research and innovations are never ending. Therefore, it is one of the few professional streams where there is no fear of stagnation. Why choose Medicine/Medical Sciences as a career?A profession that is known for its closest ties to altruism and selflessness, Medicine/Medical Sciences garners great respect from the society. A noble profession, it is dedicated to the alleviation of human pain and suffering and the prevention of diseases to promote a healthy lifestyle. No wonder the profession is regarded as both an art and a science.
266. The rapidly expanding health care sector, not only in India but also the world over, has resulted in a huge demand for trained professionals in this field. Career prospects for trained doctors/nurses/specialists are, therefore, very good. Health care specialists including paramedical specialists and technicians, and educators are an important constituent in the ongoing betterment of societal health standards.Over the next couple of decades, population in the age-group 15-59 is set to grow at the highest rate to constitute 64.5 per cent of the total Indian population. As a result, their health concerns will occupy more mindshare in years to come. Lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases are likely to keep plaguing us. To offset this, there will be a rising demand for medical care. India is posited to become an active nucleus for medical innovation and scientific advancement in the forthcoming years. Today, medical technology serves as a vital tool and a global platform for communication enabling physicians from all over the world to exchange ideas, views, and perspectives with each other. The field is a dynamic one, which continues to evolve, affording myriad opportunities for skilled professionals.Trends and industry facts: * Today, the Indian healthcare industry is estimated at $35 billion and is slated to grow to $75 billion by 2013.* To meet the burgeoning demand for healthcare professionals in the country, India is likely to need at least seven million more.* This is way ahead of retail which stands at 2 million and IT enabled services at 5 million.* On the other hand, medical professionals will need to serve the medical needs of 1.2 billion by 2015.* 180 recognized medical colleges in India produce close to 27,000 graduates every year. Approximately, 24,000 doctors are registered with the Medical Council of India (MCI) into the practice every year. This, as is evident, is acutely short of the requirement. (MCI annual report 2006-2007)* Even by a conservative estimate, India lags behind 0.2 million doctors and 0.5 million nurses currently. This does not even include paramedical and administrative personnel.* In spite of the need for doctors and the expected growth of this industry, India severely lacks well-equipped training facilities even today.* Lack of mandated standardization and regulation in the profession has resulted in over 90 per cent of healthcare being serviced by the unorganized sector.* State wise, there is a big gap in the country between healthcare workers and population. In Uttar Pradesh, the number of doctors per lac population is 23 and the number of nurses per lac population is 9.24. As against this, in Kerala, the number of doctors per lac population is 56.72 and the number of nurses per lac population is 78.41.So, there you have it! Being a doctor in India is what is needed. All macroeconomic numbers are on your side.

 303.

Managing people has always been a challenge everywhere. This is because people are difficult to manage and most managers too lack the skill of effective people management. This is why we are X-raying this book entitled “The Art of Managing People”. It is co-written by Dr. Phillip Hunsaker and Dr.Anthony Alessandra, two brilliant management experts.Hunsaker is a professor of management and director of management programmes, School of Business Administration at the University of San Diego. He is a renowned consultant, speaker and author of many best-selling books on management. As for Alessandra, he is a highly-respected sales, marketing and management consultant as well as an award-winning public speaker. He has written more than 100 articles.According to Hunsaker and Alessandra, the art of managing people productively and effectively is a dynamic process that is ever changing and evolving, and many of the managerial concepts proposed only a few years ago cannot and will not work in today’s environment. These experts ascribe this development to the fact that people, business environment, government and world have changed, while scarcity of resources has worsened, especially the valuable resource of skilled labour.Hunsaker and Alessandra submit that attracting, training, motivating and keeping employees have become much more difficult and expensive, adding that these will even get worse in the future. They submit that this text has been written to overcome many of the traditional manager-employee relationship problems. According to these authors, when a manager establishes a friendly yet productive working atmosphere, the benefits to the whole organisation are substantial. These authors assert that the text offers you practical strategies, guidelines and techniques for developing interpersonal skills critical to the improvement of relations with employees; how to understand differences among people and behave accordingly; assessing and improving current working situations; creating trust between managers and employees, etc.Hunsaker and Alessandra say person-to-person skills are central to the development of an effective team of satisfied and energetic workers. They educate that allowing your workers to express their own personalities and maximise their potential will reduce stress within the workforce, create a positive spirit throughout the company and increase the organisation’s productivity and profitability. This text is segmented into three parts of 19 chapters. Part one has a generic subject matter of building productive managerial relationships, and covers the first five chapters. Chapter one is entitled “Adjusting effectively to personal style differences”. According to Hunsaker and Alessandra here, interactive management is a process of dealing with people as individuals in order to build trust, openness and honesty in the manager-employee relationship, thereby improving productivity in the organisational set-up. In their words, “To treat your employees as unique individuals, you as the manager must understand what makes them different from one another. With this knowledge, you can go about managing your employees as unique individuals with unique personalities, problems, and needs. This ‘custom-tailored’ approach to managing employees in an organisational setting is one of the major thrusts of interactive management.”Chapter two is entitled “Learning how to learn”. These authors say here that successful managers in today’s rapidly-changing world are distinguished not so much by a set of technical skills as by their ability to learn and adapt to the fluctuating demands of their careers. They stress that continuing success requires the ability to explore new opportunities and learn from past successes and failures.Hunsaker and Alessandra say one purpose for studying the learning process is to understand how people go about generating concepts, rules and principles from their experiences as guides for their future behaviour, and how they modify these concepts to improve their effectiveness in new situations. In chapters three to five, these authors discuss concepts such as doing unto others; deciding how to decide; and analysing transactional styles.Part two is summarily woven together as “Interactive communication skills” and contains eight chapters, that is, chapters six to 13. Chapter six is entitled “The art of questioning”. Here, Hunsaker and Alessandra educate that one of the most critical and valuable tools in the manager’s arsenal of communication skills, is the art of questioning. They add that the ability of the manager to ask the right questions at the right time to help his or her employees best is an essential and integral part of interactive management. “Skilful questioning simplifies the manager’s job because it gets employees to ‘open up’. The employee feels free to reveal inner feelings, motives, needs, current situations, goals, and desires. With this knowledge, the manager is in a much better position to guide the employee to the ultimate achievement of personal, professional, and organisational goals,” assert Hunsaker and Alessandra. In chapters seven to 13, they beam their analytical searchlight on concepts such as the power of listening; projecting the appropriate image; communicating through voice tones; using body language effectively; spatial arrangements saying things; how your use of time talks; and making sure with feedback.Part three, the last part has a general subject matter of interactive problem-solving and covers the last six chapters, that is, chapters 14 to 19. Chapter 14 is entitled “Problem-solving together”. Hunsaker and Alessandra educate that when managers are asked how they make decisions and solve problems, the typical response is usually something like “I don’t know. I just do what has to be done”. In the words of these authors, “Although they may not be able to specify what steps they take or what rules they apply, all would probably agree that making ‘good’ decisions and effectively solving problems are the essence of good management.”In chapters 15 to 19, Hunsaker and Alessandra discuss concepts such as defining the problem; developing action plans; implementing action; following through; and what to do with what you have learnt. As far as style is concerned, this text is on the high rung of the ladder. For instance, the language of the text is simple while the organisation of concepts is okay. The authors use graphical embroidery for visual reinforcement of readers’ understanding. What’s more, the title is short but assertive. However, grammatical errors are noticed in the text. One of these is, “Letting your workers express their own personalities and maximise their potentials…” (outside back cover), instead of “Letting your workers express their own personalities and maximise their potential…” Note that “Potential” is an uncountable noun and therefore does not structurally take an “S”). Another error is that of structural redundancy, that is, “Much more difficult and much more expensive” (page xi) instead of the elliptical version “Much more difficult and expensive”.In spite of these errors, this text still passes for a masterpiece. It is a must-read and the tips must-apply for anybody that wants to become well educated in the art of management in the New Year.

 319.

Failure. The one thing all Internet marketers never want to hear. And that is understandable Nobody wants to fail, right?I have researched some of the reasons why most newbie internet marketers fail. In this article, you may identify yourself – or others you know. This article is not meant to be one of condemnation. It is being delivered so you can identify what areas you can improve and avoid the dreaded “F” word!First, let me state up front that I mean nothing derogatory with the term “newbie.” Everyone was a newbie at some point in time. It is kind of like being a called a “rookie” in major league sports. Once you have that first year under your belt, you are no longer a rookie. The same for internet marketing. However, a “newbie” could mean a 5 year marketer if that person continues to make “rookie mistakes.” I am using the term “newbie” simply because most new comers to internet marketing are looking for the “quick buck” and most tend to make the same mistakes – “rookie mistakes.”It is my intention to provide you with the information I have discovered and identified my own shortcoming with as well. I may not have made all of the mistakes I will get into, but I have made more than one of them (I can attest to that)! But I am including a few of the others I have not made (phew!) because I have found there are many people who have made them. The Number 1 Reason Why Newbie Internet Marketers Fail: They Do Not Have the ExperienceThat is pretty clear, right? Most newbies lack the experience of marketing a product in which they never have a face to face interaction with their clients. Most people understand about face-to-face marketing and the art of “smiling, agreeing with the statements made by the customer, etc.” Internet marketing is a completely different environment.Experience in this area is the only way to gain the skill set necessary to be successful. Does that mean the newbie marketer is already destined to fail? No. It means the newbie marketer must make the extra effort to ensure success.By learning the methods needed to capture the attention of the buyer; learning what the potential preferences are of the buyer; learning the reasons why the buyer desires their product; learning how to communicate the advantages of their product to satisfy the buyer’s needs – all without any verbal interaction. Only using the written word (and in audio or video marketing as well – but the newbie will never “see” the client). This means the new internet marketer must make a concentrated effort to study the market; study the products; study the tactics used by the experts. This takes time and dedication. It means admitting you do not know everything. It means admitting you cannot do it on your own (as least not right away). It means accepting the fact that immediate riches will probably not be flooding into your back account right way. Now, there are exceptions to every rule. But those exceptions are few and far between. But most newbie marketers (myself included when I first started out) think “they” will be the exception and will reach financial independence ahead of their peers. This mindset will almost always result in discouragement and failure. What are the ways to overcome this “Inexperience Factor?”Probably the best way to gain experience is by “doing.” That sounds simple enough, right? But let me explain…The worst thing a newbie can do is to enter the highly competitive field of internet marketing and think he or she is going to become rich overnight while competing against some marketers who have been doing this for years. The best solution to this situation is to team up with an experienced marketer who can guide them through the first stages of internet marketing and help the newbie avoid some of the pitfalls that plague newbies and drive them from success straight into failure. There are numerous places to gain that type of experience and information. It would take volumes to write about each one. My intent here is simply to make the newbie marketer aware that “you are not destined to failure.” As a matter of fact, failure in and of itself is also a learning tool. Thomas Edison was quoted as saying, when questioned by a reporter as to why he was not discouraged after failing 10,000 times in making the light bulb, his answer was, “Why should I be discouraged? I found 10,000 ways it would not work!”So it is with gaining experience in internet marketing. You can go the way of 10,000 failures on your own, just so you know not to try it that way again, or you can read about the one or two ways a person who has had success did it and then follow the same path. I’m not talking about “copying” the person (though some advocate that). I’m talking about seeing what your comfort zone is; I’m talking about what “clicks” with your personality, experiences, desires and goals. Not every method works for every person. If you examine successful marketers, almost all of them utilize the fundamentals but then they tend to specialize in certain areas. Take, for example, a football team. You see the players all decked out in their uniforms and you can rationally say about any one individual, “He is a football player.” And that statement would be true. But if you look at the individual players and analyze their strengths and weaknesses, you soon realize that some of them weigh 300+ pounds. That person probably is not a wide receiver or a running back. Most likely, he is a lineman. Another is short and lanky and you see him out kicking field goals all practice long. You see a player throwing balls through tires hung at different levels and different yardages – he is probably a quarterback. Each person has a unique set of skills they bring to the “football team.”So it is with internet marketing. You may not be cut out to be a marketer in the self-help niche. You may be more of a hands on type of person who enjoys working on cars or building houses, making you uniquely qualified to assist others in that niche. People looking for information on “How to fix their car” or “How to remodel their kitchen.” Others may be more uniquely qualified to give “relationship advice.” Others on “How to build a website.”You see, there are 1,001 different ways (actually more than that) to make a living as an online marketer. YOU have a special skill set that somebody needs to know. And you have the opportunity to share the experience you already possess in that area – and be paid for it! You need to sit down and ask yourself (and give an honest answer), “What do I know that other people always ask me about?”It could be anything from repairing a clogged drain to fixing a car engine; from hanging dry wall to installing landscaping. Whatever you enjoy doing; whatever you are always helping someone with; whatever people are always seeking your advice on – these are the areas you need to focus. This is probably going to be your niche market. This is the area you will probably be the most successful. The successful marketers are able to identify what they did wrong and begin to take corrective action to put them on the path to success. Failure to identify weak areas will just mean the marketer is more likely to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.

 335.

You’re a new non-profit and wondering how you’ll come up with money to support your cause, right? You’ve heard the hype about grants and loads of free federal money that are available to anyone willing to lend a helping hand in society, but have you done any serious investigation into the processes that sustain a non-profit in the long haul?Let’s start with a few pieces of common misinformation:Grants are sustainable. This is far from the truth. Grant funding is like a crutch. The whole idea behind setting aside a chunk of money is to help an organization establish a project or keep an impactful project in place when times are tough. Grant money isn’t intended to sustain an organization fully.Grants are available for everyone. Most grant money is available to government entities and non-profit organizations. If an individual or for-profit business, chances are your grant search is going to be grueling. Not to mention, probably spend more resource applying for the money than receive IF you get funded. Therefore, seeking grant money is a largely ineffective marketing approach for almost every non-profit organization.Grants are available for everything.Grant money for specific causes that advance a social mission. Federal money for very specific and foundation money is set aside to advance a specific purpose set forth by that foundation. Although true that a foundation may support minority-owned businesses, the competition is fierce. There are thousands of people just like yourself searching for that same money. So, does that mean you should give up? Absolutely Not.But, you should devise a strategic plan based on this information. Using a transaction cost analysis (TCA) framework, let’s look at some of the most cost-effective forms of marketing for ANY non-profit organization and then we’ll discuss how this all relates to your overall funding search. There are 6 major types of marketing for organizations with social missions:Direct mailMost of us associate direct mail with those little flyers we get stuffed between the newspapers or postcards offering 50% at the next department store sale. direct mail has proved to be valuable in capturing the attention of prospective donors and in following up with people who have previously donated money to a cause. Direct mail is relatively inexpensive but does not yield a huge response.Direct Response MarketingDirect response marketing constitutes a variety of techniques but is commonly associated with practices such as television, magazine, and radio advertisements where consumers are encouraged to take part in a direct call to action. Direct response marketing is expensive and relatively ineffective in reaching targeted audiences.Catalogue MarketingCatalogue marketing is generally an approach used by businesses that sell products or packed services but can be used by non-profit organizations that sell cause-related apparel. Although catalogue marketing has a low return rate, it has been found to increase among use of other marketing techniques.Telephone MarketingWe’re all familiar with telemarketers-primarily the reason telephone marketing gets a bad rep but if can be a very productive means of personal selling if done properly and legally. One of the main problems with telephone marketing is the training required to ensure that all phone calls meet regulatory requirements and that the sales people themselves do a good job at representing your organization.Personal SellingExactly how it sounds, personal selling is any face-to-face encounter that has the potential to turn into an investment in your cause. Face-to-face selling has a high rate of return however it requires the most resources of any marketing tactic because it requires research, scheduling, coordination, and often multiple meetings between executives.Online MarketingThere is no doubt that the internet has changed the marketplace and it is also one of the most cost-effective methods of marketing. The problem is have historically fallen behind with online trends and don’t make investments in online marketing processes, never mind an online marketing plan. For a social venture to be successful in the 21st century, it’s almost impossible to avoid investing in a website and social media. In a recent study published by Direct Marketing: An International Journal, TCA was used to measure the effectiveness of these approaches based on the level of control over direct marketing (DM) resources compared to the cost to implement each approach. Not surprisingly, the most productive forms of marketing were namely personal selling, telephone, direct mail, and online while the least cost-effective forms were direct response and catalogue. However, the findings presented in this study are consistent in that they support the use of multiple forms of marketing as the most effective approach. What does marketing have to do with fundraising? Most non-profits are small, and many of these organizations sustain their projects through donations from the public rather than grant funding. This means that marketing (or fundraising) is one of the most vital metrics that every organization should pay close attention to when planning how they sustain their operations, pay their employees, and build capacity. So, if we take grants off the table, we can first consider other forms of revenue generating pursuits, including:1. Individual Pledges2. Corporate Giving3. Sponsorships4. Fundraising Events5. Products/Services6. Major DonationsReferencesMallin, M. L., & Finkle, T. A. (2007). Social Entrepreneurship and Direct Marketing.
