20.
A Farewell To...Well, Not You Guys!

 21.
Hello, everyone! This is just a final message to say thank you for everything. To all of our loyal readers here and to our hosts of the last 13ish years at SB Nation: You’ve been awesome.

 22.
Here’s the thing though: We fully expect you to continue to be so! And we actually have more than half a mind to continue being (at least marginally) awesome ourselves.

 23.
So, this final post at OBNUG is not so much a goodbye as it is a “see you on the other side”. Because we’re about as done ranting about the Broncos as Dan Hawkins’ was with scoring when he refused to take a knee that one time! A lot of the other blogs that have lost hosting are calling it quits, but we're channeling our inner Hawkins and we're not taking a knee either! We are, however, changing venues.

 24.
Losing SB Nation means that we lose some of our infrastructure and mechanisms for some things. We all do this for the love of what we do, but the partnership did also provide at least some compensation for our writers. In order to offset the loss of that, the new home will be partially based on subscription. However, some article categories will always be free! No matter what, though, we appreciate all the support you're willing to give to us as we navigate this suddenly changed landscape.

 25.
You can continue to follow the work of Drew (@mybrainissmart), Ryan (@TheProski), Damien (@suntoktotheface), Hunter (@UnterHonson), and Michael (@VnillaGorilla56) over at firstkickwasgood.com (don't pretend you don't know why we picked that name!).

 26.
Boise State fans can continue to enjoy the same snarky commentators they’ve come to...mildly tolerate and possibly even sometimes enjoy...over at our new home. The new site is NOT yet live. We will have the first iteration up sometime tomorrow and we expect that it will change a lot in the coming weeks as we edit and adjust it, so your patience is pre-preciated.

 27.
In the meantime, bookmark this link if you don't follow us on Twitter or Facebook. Either way, we'll see you all there tomorrow. In the meantime, always and forever...

 28.
...GO BRONCOS!!!

 60.
Other facts

 61.
1. Funnel Cakes!

 62.
During my extensive (and exhaustive) research for this game, I discovered the preview interview for the game with SDSU DL Keshawn Banks. Of the experience he said, “Vividly I remember smelling funnel cakes for 3 hours straight” Combine that with Andy’s recent presser talking about the “smell” of Albertson’s Stadium and well I don’t know where to go with that thought, but it’s almost a hypothesis.

 63.
2. “Decent O-Line”

 64.
The Broncos’ struggles on the offensive line have been much maligned. KHG being hurt on Friday lead true freshman Roger Carreon into a starting role. Even through coach-speak SDSU DL Keshawn Banks said of the Broncos, “They got a mobile quarterback, they have a good running back, decent o-line, good skill positions, good offense, they’re a good team”. One of those adjectives is not like the other. Point being, there’s a lot to prove, might as well do the provin?

 65.
3. Oh yeah, NewCoachNewQBSocialMediaMeltdownWeek

 66.
It was a...week in Bronco Nation, that’s for sure. Honestly, what everyone needs right now is a football game. I’d prefer a win, but I’ll keep the bar low, let’s just have a single game. 15 minute quarters, nothing too fancy, kickoffs, touchdowns, YARDS, idk some tackles. Feels like even that would be therapeutic. UTEP game feels like a year ago, I’m good to make it feel like a decade ago.

 67.
4. Issues

 68.
To all the Bronco fans concerned for the game, it’s worth noting 2022 hasn’t been particularly kind to the Aztecs either. Yes, BSU has had some player and staff turnover, key pieces even, but with some of the internal issues at SDSU it’s clear there are bigger issues a school can have.

 69.
5. 3-4, 1-2

 70.
All time record against SDSU, home record against SDSU. I would prefer winning records in those columns, but a tie will have to do for now. It won’t be easy, but if you can believe it, the SDSU offense has been worse than ours on paper. I bring no tidings of confidence, just mostly a “well I guess we’ll see”.

 71.
Streaks

 72.
Boise State - Lost 1 ):

 73.
San Diego State - Won 1

 74.
Best name on their roster

 75.
Inspired by the vintage film series titled, The Lord of the Rings, S New Zealand Williams’ parents thought fit to name him after the spawn point of hobbit holes.

 76.
Best picture on their roster

 77.
A LB with a missing tooth?? Senior Caden McDonald took the crown and ran with it.

 78.

 79.
Players to watch

 80.
Braxton Burmeister, QB

 81.
The Virginia Tech transfer had significant hype following his entrance into San Diego Not-A-State University, but that train has slowed some. Currently he has 230 yards passing (yes, for the season) with 2 TDs and 2 INTs. Add 149 rushing yards and a TD to that total. All I know is that the last time the Broncos played a mobile VaTech QB, I did not enjoy his screen time all too much. Have to contain and force him to throw.

 82.
Jordan Bird, RB

 83.
The 5’9 senior finds himself below George Holani in total yards at 224, but averages a whopping 7.7 YPC. He will be a key piece to the Aztec offensive identity, and if allowed to break for long gains will spell a long night for the Broncos.

 84.
Jordan Matthews, WR

 85.
While QB struggles are apparent up to this point for the Aztecs, it’s hard to forget about Jordan Matthews. So far this year he has 68 yards on 9 catches, but he will be a focal point in the passing game should the Aztecs look to establish that on the Blue.

 86.
Michael Shawcroft, LB

 87.
While the offensive output will be more telling, the Aztec defense rarely disappoints. Michael Shawcroft leads the team in tackles, sacks, and pass deflections. He’ll be all over the field Friday. (Hopefully from pacing down the sidelines)

 88.
Keys to victory

 89.

 90.

 91. Back to Basics Boise State has the talent to compete with anyone in the conference, but they can’t get away from themselves. It’s basically a fresh start (But not the OreSt kind) and they have the chance to quiet a lot of noise around them.

 92.

 93. Turnovers The turnover wave from last year moved right into week 1 and has been MIA since. Short fields will provide a huge boost to our growing offense. Gotta have em.

 94.

 95. Limit Big Plays Gonna keep putting this one here. This game feels like a 7-6 meat grinder, and 1 big play could easily decide the game. Story of Broncos D this has been “excellent, except for...” No exceptions under the lights.

 96.

 97. Field Position I sincerely hope for more offense than I think there will be, but special teams will play a huge part tomorrow night. Sound play in the 3rd part of the game might make up for whatever we’re in for in this defense v. defense battle.

 98.

 99.
Score prediction

 100.
Acknowledging that Taylen Green matched the road point total against OreSt achieved by Heisman candidate Spencer Williams, well, the man is talented. The game will be won by a couple plays, and I think the Broncos get them.

 101.
Boise State 21, SDSU 17

 102.

 122.

 123.
 124.
Hi Dirk,

 125.
You probably don’t remember me, but we ran into each other outside the Varsity Center in 2000. You were walking to your car eating an apple (that’s SO Dirk) and I was doing that half-jog half-walk thing from my car in the stadium lot to a class at the Multipurpose Building that had started 5 minutes prior. I remember us both thinking it was so crazy that I’d ran into you since I’d ran into Rod Jensen the day before at the Broadway Wendy’s. Anyway, I’ve been fine. Little concerned about Boise State and frankly, that’s why I’m writing this “open” letter. It’s “open” in the way that marriages are, by the way—one-sided and bound to end in tears.

 126.
So anyway, you’ve found yourself in an interesting predicament. You probably thought retirement was going to be a lot more golfing and woodworking and less appeasing blue and orange clad mobs with pitchforks and torches, but hey...I thought putting all my money into something called “LoggiaCoin” was a safe investment and now I’m selling pencils. By the way, if you need a good pencil, I have some really top-end Ticonderogas I just got in. Anyway, we can talk about that later. For now, maybe let’s stick to the Boise State offense.

 127.
I was at the home opener and was given quite a few notes from fellow fans in section 128. I told them I’d pass them on to the Boise State OC and since it looks like that’s you, I’ll just get right to it.

 128.
Score more points

 129.
The ponytailed guy in front of me that had had “4 or 5” Whiteclaws in the parking lot was quite adamant about this fact and I knew this was a point he’d want relayed to you. After thumbing through my favorite football strategy guide—Football the Hal Mumme Way—I learned that there are 3 ways to score in a football game, but touchdowns are by far the preferred method and the most consequential. Apparently, you just have to cross the goal line with the ball in your possession and they award you these points. Make sure it’s not your own goal line though, see “Rypien, Laramie” in the indices to find out why.

 130.
Don’t go backwards

 131.
Again, the guy in front of me was rather put out when this happened and underscored this point by stating (to anyone in a 20 yard radius) that “this is an [expletive] FCS team—my grandma could move the ball on them”. I later found out his grandma is Larry Csonka, so you know that’s true. These negative plays put us in bad 3rd down situations rather often...and oh, why am I telling you...you coached Jameis Winston. Anyway, maybe get our guys to the edges, since running between the tackles is like running into a brick wall...with a much lower success rate than Kool-Aid Man.

 132.
Get creative

 133.
It’s been too long since we’ve seen trickeration at Boise State. That was kind of our thing for a while. Since you just started in this role, I can’t imagine the bag is too deep, but maybe one flea flicker for every 60 “couth plays” would do the trick. I also have been tinkering with a new spin on an old classic...I call it “Statue Right”. Ask me about this later.

 134.
Have fun

 135.
A wise sage named Houston Nutt once said repeatedly that the way to spell “Fun” is “W-I-N”. While this won’t get you far at the 2nd grade spelling bee, I think there is at least a nugget of wisdom there. Sure, people will have more fun when they aren’t getting punched in the mouth by teams from El Paso, but they’ll also have more fun when the players are having it. No one seems very loose on the offensive side of the ball and this is a game after all. Let them play to their strengths and perhaps we’ll see the ball “not go backwards” more often than not.

 136.
Anyway, these are just my thoughts. I like your visor. No need to write back...our brief meeting in Fall of 2000 let me know we’re the kind of pals that don’t need the communication to go both ways. Rod Jensen on the other hand is coming over later for pie.

 137.
Good luck and Go Broncos!

 138.
Your (best) friend,

 167.
This development comes two days after the recent announcement that Boise State’s offensive coordinator, Tim Plough, had involuntarily parted ways with the school.

 168.
Hank started his college career with bang. He came in as one of the top-two recruits in program history and immediately notched a signature win at Florida State, throwing for 407 yards on the Seminoles and dodging the path of a literal hurricane in the process of a quick business trip into and back out of Tallahassee. This earned him the nickname “Hurricane Hank”.

 169.
Hank was only able to play in about seven and a half games that year, however, as he sustained an injury vs Hawaii that kept him out until the bowl game. In the games he did play in 2019, Boise State’s last Mountain West Championship season, he only lost one—the Vegas Bowl vs Chris Petersen’s Washington Huskies, in his final game as a coach.

 170.
The rest of the way, Bachmeier compiled a record of 20-9 as a starter. He’ll leave Boise State with 6,605 passing yards, 41 TDs, and 19 INTs. His rushing total of 8 career yards was obviously skewed by being sacked 57 times, but he did add another 3 scores on the ground over four years. His overall completion percentage was 63.2%.

 171.
More details will come as they develop, but in the meantime, we wish Hank all the best of luck in the future.

 172.
It appears Taylen Green will likely be the next man up at the QB position, so we’ll see you all at Albertson’s Stadium on Friday at 6 pm! Also, to be clear, from today until Taylen Green is no longer the QB, it is now appropriate to cheer for his success—loudly and enthusiastically!

 173.
Go Broncos!

 192.
 193.
In a move many saw as inevitable but doubted we’d see in such short order, Boise State second-year OC Tim Plough is officially OUT as Boise State offensive coordinator effective immediately—former Boise State HC and NFL HC/OC Dirk Koetter, who’d been serving as offensive analyst will take over in an interim capacity. Boise State’s offense under Plough just never found its rhythm and while the lion’s share fell of the criticism fell on him, the rest of the offensive unit contributed as well. Regardless, Boise State barely hit 30 PPG last year and couldn’t muster extra juice to put away a host of teams in ‘21...things have only been worse this year, with the Broncos near the worst in the COUNTRY in several offensive categories. Everything culminated with an embarrassing road loss last night at UTEP where the Broncos only had 177 yards of total offense.

 194.
It’s weird to feel relief in a situation like this where the coach wasn’t let go due to any kind of scandal or general malfeasance, and Plough seemed like a likable, jovial coach whom the players liked and respected. It was also clear, however, that he was a bad fit for Boise State—a school that has been known for their offensive prowess for nearly two decades. “The standard is the standard”, Andy Avalos often says...and this wasn’t it.

 195.
Who knows if we see much change in philosophy from Koetter a 3rd of the way into the season, but he has a lot of experience and will likely at least be an upgrade in in-game adjustments. Koetter was 26-10 during his time at Boise State and was known for his aggressive offensive nature. Whether he stays on after the season ends and the hiring landscape settles remains to be seen. Nowhere to go but up, right? RIGHT?!

 215.
...

 216.
I don’t want to think about this any more than you do, let’s make this short.

 217.
It sucked.

 218.

 219.
1st Quarter-

 220.
UTEP had a 7 yard punt, it was funny at the time. We had a pretty good scripted drive, but we had to kick a FG. We got a painful taste of the whole game as the 1st quarter lasted 20 minutes.

 221.
2nd Quarter

 222.
It’s funny that I added a note “Twitter on maximum meltdown” after the long UTEP TD to take the lead, but it’s not that funny is it?

 223.
3rd Quarter

 224.
The offense attended their scripted one possession. We looked like a football team. And that was that.

 225.
4th Quarter

 226.
Why are you still reading? UTEP absolutely owned this team. This wasn’t even a fluke win, this is called being absolutely outclassed. They marched down the field and destroyed us. 10 minutes. I would say I’ve seen 10 worse minutes of football, but I haven’t.

 227.

 228.
What can we say?

 229.

 230.
I love Hank Bachmeier. His game against FSU was the stuff of legends. Please give him respect as a member of this team we love. That being said, take a redshirt and play 2 years somewhere else. Give us TG or Vidlak or a wildcat offense with Holani. This train is over.

 231.
Plough has bought his ticket out of here. He would need to come up with 50+ PPG the rest of the season to make it out. I love the guy too. Might not be his fault, maybe it’s Andy’s. His seat is getting warmer too.

 232.
I hope this is an overreaction. I hope this is the turning point. I just don’t know at this point.

 253.
It’s Sun Bowl time, everyone. Boise State looks to win their 3rd straight after an...uh...unceremonious(?) start in Corvallis. In about a half hour, the Broncos and Miners will square off for the 7th time (the Broncos have won every previous meeting) and everyone will likely commence whining about our offense and raving about our defense...are we San Diego State now? The game is on CBS Sports Network, 670 KBOI, and in our hearts. Hang out here if you want to discuss our boyz. We’ll be along after the festivities to recap what we just saw.

 272.

 273.
 274.
Let’s get to it.

 275.
Here are the rules:

 276.
We are going to keep this simple this year on the predict the scores. No need to overly complicate this.

 277.
Guess the actual score as close as you can (obviously) but in the event that no one gets the score 100% correct, we are going to go with how close you guys were. Just... just make my job easier and get it right from the outset, mmkay?

 278.

 279.
Tiebreakers: Let’s just not have ties, ok? I just need this to be fairly straight forward and easy on everyone. Especially since we aren’t going to be having any awards.

 280.
Always choose the Broncos to win. No matter the odds. Picking against the Broncos risks a lifetime ban. I’m kidding of course. But seriously.

 281.
Good luck to everyone making their respective guesses and I hope it’s an early evening.

 282.

 283.
Your turn
