  46. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I don’t know about you, but that sounds stupid and dangerous. </span></p>
  47. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s much simpler to build a side hustle alongside your day job, hit your freedom number, and then jump ship if you want.</span></p>
  48. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here’s how you can do it:</span></p>
  49. <h3><b>Step 1: Believe it</b></h3>
  50. <h4><b>Write out your Dream Year</b></h4>
  51. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of the biggest things I notice when I speak with people is they DON’T BELIEVE they can live their dream life.</span></p>
  52. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A few years ago I didn’t think my life could be where I am today. The more you write it out, look at it, and think about it &#8211; I promise you &#8211; you deserve and can have that life!</span></p>
  53. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You need to get clear on what “freedom” actually means to you. </span></p>
  54. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On your phone, voice memo, or old-school pen-n-paper write out where you want to be on Dec 31 of this year &#8211; the more detailed the better.</span></p>
  55. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When you realize you are the author of your life then you realize you can make it a true story. </span></p>
  56. <p><b>It’s easy to get what you want when you know what you want.</b></p>
  57. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">(</span><a href="https://ctt.ac/cfve6" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Share this on X/Twitter</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">)</span></p>
  58. <h4><b>Let your Hate, motivate!</b></h4>
  59. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Next, write out everything that irritates you about where you are right now.</span></p>
  60. <ul>
  61. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">My boss keeps interrupting me while I eat my tacos</span></li>
  62. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">My work doesn’t give me the creative freedom</span></li>
  63. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> I hate having to wear business professional clothes (boo Intel!)</span></li>
  64. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">The traffic to work SUCKS <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f624.png" alt="😤" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></li>
  65. </ul>
  66. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">These are all motivational reminders for you to start your side hustle.</span></p>
  67. <h3><b>Step 2: Set your Freedom Number</b></h3>
  68. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Your </span><a href="https://noahkagan.com/mdwbook/" data-wpel-link="internal"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Freedom Number</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is the amount of money you need to be earning on the side to quit your day job comfortably.</span></p>
  69. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My monthly Freedom Number was $3,000. Why? Because when I added up my ideal living expenses, that&#8217;s what I got.</span></p>
  70. <ul>
  71. <li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Housing (rent at my apartment): $1,000</span></li>
  72. <li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Food and travel (tacos/steak/wine and working abroad): $1,000</span></li>
  73. <li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Savings and investment: $1,000</span></li>
  74. <li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Total: $3,000</span></li>
  75. </ul>
  76. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The power is finding out your Freedom Number is LOWER than you realize and also SMALLER than you expected.</span></p>
  77. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It helps show that your dreams are not as far off as you imagine.</span></p>
  78. <h4><b>Start with your zone of influence</b></h4>
  79. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A mistake I see people make is trying to start a business in a completely unrelated industry to what they’re familiar with.</span></p>
  80. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They have a job as an accountant but try to start a business making software for Content Creators.</span></p>
  81. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Why make it harder on yourself?</span></p>
  82. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Use your pre-existing skills, knowledge, and network.</span></p>
  83. <ul>
  84. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">What do you get paid for in your day job?</span></li>
  85. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> What have you gotten paid for in the past?</span></li>
  86. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> What hobbies or things have people commented positively on?</span></li>
  87. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Who do you have access to in your network?</span></li>
  88. </ul>
  89. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And if you don’t already have a network or skills – a day job is the perfect place to gain experience, connections, and save money.</span></p>
  90. <h4><b>Give up 1 Netflix show a week.</b></h4>
  91. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I hated my job at Intel. But during my nights, lunches, and weekends, I wasn’t worrying about my job whatsoever. It gave me space to work on side hustles.</span></p>
  92. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Block off 1 hour in your calendar each week to change your life.</span></p>
  93. <p><b>What can you do during your day job to start planting seeds?</b></p>
  94. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just because you have a job doesn’t mean you can’t start your business right NOW.</span></p>
  95. <h3><b>Step 3: Make your first $1</b></h3>
  96. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The validation stage is about speed. Don’t overthink the design, name, or logo. Just focus on seeing if you can get people to buy your product!</span></p>
  97. <p><b>Make it easy</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: start with your best friends and family members who might be interested.</span></p>
  98. <p><b>Collect money upfront</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: the promise of payment is not validation… that’s a polite rejection. Everyone’s “interested” until they have to pay.</span></p>
  99. <p><b>Views rejections as a GIFT</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">: every rejection is an opportunity to take a deep dive into customer problems.</span></p>
  100. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many struggle to make their first dollar because they are so focused on how to make their first million.</span></p>
  101. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Think NOW, not HOW.</span></p>
  102. <h4><b>Test, then invest</b></h4>
  103. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At the start, most people don’t test enough things.</span></p>
  104. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Then when they find something that works, they quit and move on too soon.</span></p>
  105. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The solution? </span><b>Set a constraint on your experiments.</b></p>
  106. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I find thirty days is more than enough to get results from your marketing experiments.</span></p>
  107. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Find what works and double down on it; find what doesn’t work and kill it.</span></p>
  108. <h3><b>Step 4: Be smart with your finances</b></h3>
  109. <h4><b>Live a Low-Cost Lifestyle (LCL)</b></h4>
  110. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I saved money by staying in my aunt’s basement <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f64f.png" alt="🙏" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />. I even slept on couches for a whole year and rarely ate out.</span></p>
  111. <p><b>Most people spend money they don&#8217;t have on lifestyles they can&#8217;t afford</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. If you want to build wealth, do the opposite.</span></p>
  112. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you’re interested in learning more about personal finance, Ramit Sethi’s book </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">I Will Teach You to Be Rich</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is great for this.</span></p>
  113. <h3><b>Step 5: Keep going</b></h3>
  114. <h4><b>Persistence beats resistance</b></h4>
  115. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It took me 10 years (!!) to create the company and life that I wanted with </span><a href="https://appsumo.com/" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">AppSumo</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
  116. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s cliche, but good things take time.</span></p>
  117. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Creating your own path takes more than just skill – it demands grit.</span></p>
  118. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Obstacles are bound to arise. It’s your persistence and willingness to adapt that will determine your success.</span></p>
  119. <p><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-15489 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10-300x300.png" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10-300x300.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10-150x150.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10-768x768.png 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10.png 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
  120. <h4><b>Enjoy the journey</b></h4>
  121. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I didn’t watch the movie </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Titanic</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> until a year ago because I knew the ship crashed and sank.</span></p>
  122. <p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Why would I want to watch something where I know the ending?”</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> I thought.</span></p>
  123. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But the movie is actually phenomenal. The whole point was the journey.</span></p>
  124. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The same thing goes with our lives.</span></p>
  125. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In my 20s, I allowed my negative emotions from getting fired from Facebook to make me miserable along the journey.</span></p>
  126. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I was so fixated on proving others wrong that I didn’t allow myself to enjoy the process.</span></p>
  127. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I was always rushing to have everything figured out.</span></p>
  128. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I wished I had just enjoyed being there.</span></p>
  129. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It will be challenging.</span></p>
  130. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But the rewards are worth it.</span></p>
  131. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you’re serious about breaking free and want to start your dream business this weekend, there’s ONE resource I can’t recommend enough…</span></p>
  132. <p><a href="https://noahkagan.com/mdwbook/" data-wpel-link="internal"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Million Dollar Weekend</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is the business book I wish I had when I started my entrepreneurship journey. </span></p>
  133. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I promise you: Who you are, what you have, and what you know right now are more than enough to get going.</span></p>
  134. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The life and business of your dreams are within reach.</span></p>
  135. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now, get out there and START!</span></p>
  136. <p>&nbsp;</p>
  137. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Rooting for you,</span></p>

  190. <p><img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-15485 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/young-noah-1-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/young-noah-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/young-noah-1-150x113.jpg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/young-noah-1.jpg 512w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
  191. <h3><b>1/ It’s okay to feel lost</b></h3>
  192. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I was younger, all my friends were becoming accountants, consultants, and bankers… but I knew that wasn’t for me. At the time, I felt lost and confused.</span></p>
  193. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But looking back, I was exactly where I needed to be.</span></p>
  194. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When you’re in your 20s, you’re not supposed to know exactly what you want to do with your career.</span></p>
  195. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of trying to predict your career path, focus on taking daily action.</span></p>
  196. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-15486 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/35-300x300.png" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/35-300x300.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/35-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/35-150x150.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/35-768x768.png 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/35.png 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
  197. <h3><b>2/ Take more swings</b></h3>
  198. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I tried A LOT of businesses when I was young and broke, but I had a lot of time (Everspeed, CollegeUp, HFG Consulting, Entrepreneur27, etc.).</span></p>
  199. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Early in your career, you can afford to take more risks because you have fewer obligations.</span></p>
  200. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Create your own luck by taking a lot of relentless action.</span></p>
  201. <ul>
  202. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Do free work to get your foot in the door</span></li>
  203. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fly across the country to meet with an investor</span></li>
  204. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Start the crazy business idea with your roommate</span></li>
  205. </ul>
  206. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Take more swings. You only need ONE to win.</span></p>
  207. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">(</span><a href="https://ctt.ac/rom3X" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Share this on X/Twitter</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">)</span></p>
  208. <h3><b>3/ Be the hub</b></h3>
  209. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I graduated from UC Berkeley in 2004, I hosted dinners, beer meetups, and conferences…even when I didn’t know anyone.</span></p>
  210. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-15487 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Young-Noah-2-300x225.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="225" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Young-Noah-2-300x225.jpg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Young-Noah-2-150x113.jpg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Young-Noah-2.jpg 512w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
  211. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>Me (in background) + Tim Ferriss at a meetup</em></p>
  212. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The interesting people I helped at the time, like Ramit Sethi, Tim Ferriss, and Ryan Holiday ended up helping me 15 years down the line.</span></p>
  213. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One way to get started right NOW:</span></p>
  214. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ask the smartest people you know, <em>“Who is ONE person I should meet?’</em></span></p>
  215. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A coffee or Zoom meeting may be the smartest investment you’ll ever make!</span></p>
  216. <h3><b>4/ Document your learning online</b></h3>
  217. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I’ve been writing on my personal blog since 2000 (!!)</span></p>
  218. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s led me to connect with amazing people and meet my business partner Chad Boyda.</span></p>
  219. <p><b>Creating content is a career cheat code.</b></p>
  220. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Worst case? You learn how to write and promote your work.</span></p>
  221. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Best case? You attract life-changing opportunities.</span></p>
  222. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You also get to look back on yourself and appreciate how far you’ve come. <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f60c.png" alt="😌" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></p>
  223. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-15467 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-4-300x149.png" alt="" width="300" height="149" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-4-300x149.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-4-150x74.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-4.png 512w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
  224. <h3><b>5/ Learn copywriting</b></h3>
  225. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I first started AppSumo, my buddy Neville tried to convince me to let him use “Copywriting” in our emails to help generate more sales.</span></p>
  226. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I was skeptical, and for good reason!</span></p>
  227. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The first line of the email he wrote was <em>&#8220;If you get a boner when I whisper the word &#8216;Garamond&#8217; into your ear&#8230;..you might be interested.&#8221;</em> <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f648.png" alt="🙈" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></p>
  228. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But guess what? The day that Neville’s email was sent out was the first day AppSumo made a $10,000 profit in a single day.</span></p>
  229. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Copywriting is not about hitting a word count or writing a five-paragraph essay.</span></p>
  230. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s about capturing attention and persuading action.</span></p>
  231. <p><b>You will never be disappointed by improving your communication skills.</b></p>
  232. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Two great resources:</span></p>
  233. <ol>
  234. <li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://morgancrozier.com/boron-letters/" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Boron Letters</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (It’s free!)</span></li>
  235. <li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1"><a href="https://copywritingcourse.com/" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Neville Medhora’s Copywriting Course</span></a></li>
  236. </ol>
  237. <h3><b>6/ Master the art of the cold email</b></h3>
  238. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I’ve been sending cold emails since I was a freshman at UC Berkeley.</span></p>
  239. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The best cold emails:</span></p>
  240. <ul>
  241. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Get to the point</span></li>
  242. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instantly grab attention</span></li>
  243. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Answer “What’s in it for me?”</span></li>
  244. </ul>
  245. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you don’t get a response? Follow up without being rude.</span></p>
  246. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you shoot 100 shots, you’re bound to land one hit.</span></p>
  247. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-15488 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-6-300x300.png" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-6-300x300.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-6-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-6-150x150.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-6-768x768.png 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-6.png 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
  248. <h3><b>7/ Mentors are overrated</b></h3>
  249. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Wanna know the best way to find a mentor? Become someone worth mentoring.</span></p>
  250. <ul>
  251. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Start things</span></li>
  252. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Encounter a problem</span></li>
  253. <li><b>Ask for SPECIFIC feedback, not advice</b></li>
  254. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Report back on how you did</span></li>
  255. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Repeat <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f501.png" alt="🔁" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></li>
  256. </ul>
  257. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You’ll realize you never needed a “mentor” in the first place.</span></p>
  258. <h3><b>8/ Build independent income streams</b></h3>
  259. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When I was young, I thought I was special because I started many businesses in college, had a blog, and worked at Facebook.</span></p>
  260. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The reality was I was dependent on my boss.</span></p>
  261. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Getting fired taught me that EVERYONE is replaceable.</span></p>
  262. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of my first side hustles (freecallsto.com) only made around $50/month BUT taught me the fundamentals of coding and marketing.</span></p>
  263. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Start more side hustles. You’ll learn more, earn independent income, and maybe even replace your income to go full-time.</span></p>
  264. <h3><b>9/ Give way less fucks about other people</b></h3>
  265. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">No amount of money, followers, or acknowledgment will quench your thirst for fulfillment if you don’t learn to be proud of yourself.</span></p>
  266. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The truth is the people you’re trying to impress aren’t even thinking about you in the first place.</span></p>
  267. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of trying to prove others wrong, prove yourself right.</span></p>
  268. <h3><b>10/ Have more patience that it will work out</b></h3>
  269. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In my 20s, I was impatient to get rich and famous. I beat myself up a ton.</span></p>
  270. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">That’s a miserable way to live. You don’t have to be so hard on yourself.</span></p>
  271. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you’re doing the reps, the results WILL pay off.</span></p>
  272. <p><b>Wealth comes from compounded time.</b></p>
  273. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Be impatient with actions and patient with results.</span></p>
  274. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">(</span><a href="https://ctt.ac/iWxAf" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Share this on X/Twitter</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">)</span></p>
  275. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-15489 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10-300x300.png" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10-300x300.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10-150x150.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10-768x768.png 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-10.png 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
  276. <h3><b>11/ Practice positive self-talk</b></h3>
  277. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After getting fired from Facebook, it took years to make peace with the voice in my head.</span></p>
  278. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I ignored all the cliche mindset advice because I wasn’t where I wanted to be in life.</span></p>
  279. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But as I’ve gotten older and more mature &#8211; I’ve realized how powerful your self-confidence matters for your life and business.</span></p>
  280. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A practice that’s helped:</span></p>
  281. <p><b>Any time you say something negative about yourself, also say something positive. </b><em>(<span style="font-weight: 400;">Thanks </span><a href="http://tynan.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tynan</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for the tip.)</span></em></p>
  282. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can be your biggest critic as long as you’re also your biggest cheerleader.</span></p>
  283. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">What’s something nice that you can say to yourself right NOW?</span></p>
  284. <h3><b>12/ Don’t jump ship too early</b></h3>
  285. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One of my biggest regrets is shutting down CommunityNext (my conference business) when I should have hired someone to keep running it.</span></p>
  286. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Someone else took that idea, ran with it, and sold it for multiple millions of dollars.</span></p>
  287. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of quitting when it gets boring – find someone to run it while you work on the next thing.</span></p>
  288. <h3><b>13/ Don’t let work consume your life</b></h3>
  289. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I worked A LOT in my 20s.</span></p>
  290. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I don’t regret it &#8211; because it got me to where I am today.</span></p>
  291. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But don’t forget to have fun too!</span></p>
  292. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Your youth is about a diversity of experiences.</span></p>
  293. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Play sports. Travel abroad. Hang out with friends.</span></p>
  294. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ironically, doing those things will give you more inspiration for your work.</span></p>
  295. <h3><b>14/ Peer up the career ladder</b></h3>
  296. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I wish I job shadowed and interviewed more people.</span></p>
  297. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In school, we’re conditioned to fall in love with job titles, without knowing the day-to-day work.</span></p>
  298. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It sounds cool to be a surgeon until you realize you have to deal with blood all day.</span></p>
  299. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Here’s a template you can use:</span></p>
  300. <p><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Hey, I’m a Senior at X college interested in [specific field]. Can I see what you do for a day?” </span></em></p>
  301. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Don’t let an impressive-sounding title distract you from what matters most: doing work you enjoy.</span></p>
  302. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">(</span><a href="https://ctt.ac/es2e8" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Share this on X/Twitter</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">)</span></p>
  303. <h3><b>15/ Your network DOES matter</b></h3>
  304. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Growing up in the bay was a huge cheat code.</span></p>
  305. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I was surrounded by talented and driven people.</span></p>
  306. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As cliche as it may be, the people in your life DO matter a ton.</span></p>
  307. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you can’t geographically surround yourself with exceptional people, surround yourself digitally.</span></p>
  308. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Who’s on your WhatsApp? Text groups? Twitter DMs?</span></p>
  309. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And are those people helping you get closer or further from your goals?</span></p>
  310. <h3><b>16/ Read more biographies</b></h3>
  311. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A wise friend once told me, </span><b>“There are million-dollar lessons hidden in $30 books.”</b></p>
  312. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Biographies give you a unique peek into the lives of great people.</span></p>
  313. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of learning from your own mistakes, why not learn from those who have come before you?</span></p>
  314. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some of my favorites:</span></p>
  315. <ul>
  316. <li><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Steve-Jobs-Walter-Isaacson/dp/1451648537" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Steve Jobs</span></a></li>
  317. <li><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Hard-Drive-Making-Microsoft-Empire/dp/0887306292" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bill Gates</span></a></li>
  318. <li><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Art-Happiness-10th-Anniversary-Handbook/dp/1594488894" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dalai Lama</span></a></li>
  319. </ul>
  320. <h3><b>17/ Keep a journal</b></h3>
  321. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I’ve kept a private blog since my time at Facebook.</span></p>
  322. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s helped me become aware of my thought process and emotions.</span></p>
  323. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Document how you&#8217;re thinking about your life as you’re living it.</span></p>
  324. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You don’t even need to share it online.</span></p>
  325. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Plus, it’s cool to see how your thinking evolves.</span></p>
  326. <h3><b>18/ You’re gonna be okay</b></h3>
  327. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You’re young.</span></p>
  328. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s okay if you don’t have everything figured out.</span></p>
  329. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Zoom out. We’re just a bunch of monkeys floating around on a tiny rock in space.</span></p>
  330. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Hang around optimistic people. Do things that inspire you. Enjoy the party while we’re around.</span></p>
  331. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It will all work out.</span></p>
  332. <p>&nbsp;</p>
  333. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Rooting for you,</span></p>
  334. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Noah <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f32e.png" alt="🌮" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></p>
  335. <p>&nbsp;</p>
  336. <p><b>PS</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span><a href="https://noahkagan.com/mdwbook/" data-wpel-link="internal"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Million Dollar Weekend</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> is the business book I wish I had when I was younger. It contains everything I’ve learned from building eight million-dollar businesses. Let’s build your </span><a href="https://noahkagan.com/mdwbook/" data-wpel-link="internal"><span style="font-weight: 400;">dream business</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> this weekend! <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f49a.png" alt="💚" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></p>

  375. <p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">2 minutes later… She got a standing ovation. She CRUSHED it!</span></i></p>
  376. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">==</span></p>
  377. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One thing that stood out to me at the SXSW event was how many people thought you have to be loud or be an extrovert to be successful.</span></p>
  378. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But that’s not true!!</span></p>
  379. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So today, I’m going to break down how you can get rich (even if you’re an introvert).</span></p>
  380. <h3><b>What even is an introvert?</b></h3>
  381. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Before we start, let’s define what being an ‘introvert’ actually means.</span></p>
  382. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Many people believe introversion is about being shy, awkward, or unconfident.</span></p>
  383. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But that’s not the case at all.</span></p>
  384. <p><b>Introversion is about where you get your energy from.</b></p>
  385. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f4c9.png" alt="📉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />For introverts, every social interaction depletes their energy level.</span></p>
  386. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f4c8.png" alt="📈" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> For extroverts, every social interaction increases their energy level.</span></p>
  387. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-15476 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-23-300x300.png" alt="" width="350" height="350" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-23-300x300.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-23-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-23-150x150.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-23-768x768.png 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-23.png 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px" /></p>
  388. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The secret?</span></p>
  389. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can be both an introvert and extrovert in different contexts.</span></p>
  390. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For example, when I spoke at the SXSW event in front of 200 audience members… I LOVED IT.</span></p>
  391. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But when I stayed afterward to sign autographs for </span><a href="https://noahkagan.com/mdwbook/" data-wpel-link="internal"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Million Dollar Weekend</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">… I left feeling kinda drained.</span></p>
  392. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When people use ‘introversion’ as an excuse &#8211; it’s usually a mask for a deeper fear.</span></p>
  393. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">They’re mistaking introversion for fear of starting or fear of asking.</span></p>
  394. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">(</span><a href="https://ctt.ac/10nNp" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Share this on X/Twitter</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">)</span></p>
  395. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But some of the world’s richest people are introverts.</span></p>
  396. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos…</span></p>
  397. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">While talking to people and developing relationships are crucial to any entrepreneur – </span><b>Introversion is NOT a disadvantage.</b></p>
  398. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In fact, when leveraged correctly, it can be an advantage.</span></p>
  399. <h3><b>1- You Don’t Need to Be Extroverted to Succeed</b></h3>
  400. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The internet gives ANYONE the chance to have the same broadcasting power as a massive media brand.</span></p>
  401. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For example, I recently came across a 21-year-old kid from Singapore making $1M+/year selling Notion templates with a faceless brand.</span></p>
  402. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-15477 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Easlo-300x213.png" alt="" width="351" height="249" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Easlo-300x213.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Easlo-150x107.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Easlo.png 512w" sizes="(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px" /></p>
  403. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I had </span><a href="https://noahkagan.com/dan-koe/" data-wpel-link="internal"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dan Koe</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> on my podcast. He’s making $4M+/year with writing and education products.</span></p>
  404. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I also had </span><a href="https://noahkagan.com/brett-williams/" data-wpel-link="internal"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Brett from Design Joy</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> on the pod. He runs a $2M+/year solo design subscription agency.</span></p>
  405. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The point is: You can get rich in MANY ways as an introvert.</span></p>
  406. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can create a profitable business behind a laptop without needing to show your face, manage employees, or even share your real name.</span></p>
  407. <h3><b>2- Partner With Extroverts</b></h3>
  408. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some of the most successful companies in the world were started by people with complementary skill sets.</span></p>
  409. <ul>
  410. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak at Apple</span></li>
  411. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Gates and Allen at Microsoft</span></li>
  412. <li>Chad and me at <a href="https://appsumo.com/" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">AppSumo</a> <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f609.png" alt="😉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></li>
  413. </ul>
  414. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-15478 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Chad-and-Noah-300x225.jpeg" alt="" width="351" height="263" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Chad-and-Noah-300x225.jpeg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Chad-and-Noah-150x113.jpeg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Chad-and-Noah.jpeg 512w" sizes="(max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px" /></p>
  415. <p><b>Surround yourself with people who complement your strengths</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
  416. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For example, I’m great at promoting and marketing, but in the past have struggled with consistency and sticking with things.</span></p>
  417. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So I’ve surrounded myself with people who move forward in the things I’m not the best at.</span></p>
  418. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you’re not the most outgoing person, find someone who is.</span></p>
  419. <h3><b>3- Optimize For Introversion</b></h3>
  420. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When you do have to do more ‘extroverted’ things, create rules to optimize for your introversion.</span></p>
  421. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">3 tips I use:</span></p>
  422. <ol>
  423. <li><b> Schedule breaks</b></li>
  424. </ol>
  425. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I rarely have hour-long meetings. Every meeting is 30-45 minutes so I can block off 15 minutes between meetings to be by myself and recharge.</span></p>
  426. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-15479 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Noah-Calendar-300x163.png" alt="" width="350" height="190" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Noah-Calendar-300x163.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Noah-Calendar-150x82.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Noah-Calendar.png 512w" sizes="(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px" /></p>
  427. <ol start="2">
  428. <li><b> Take a day off</b></li>
  429. </ol>
  430. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I take Saturdays off to rest, recharge, and spend time with family. I don’t check social media, Slack, or my email.</span></p>
  431. <ol start="3">
  432. <li><b> Create personal rules </b></li>
  433. </ol>
  434. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dharmesh Shah (founder of HubSpot) says he is “phone phobic” &#8211; I use this regularly to avoid phone calls or having to talk to people.</span></p>
  435. <p><b>Few people give you a hard time when you say you have a personal rule.</b></p>
  436. <p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I have a personal rule that I don’t do weekly Zoom calls with clients. But I’ll write you a weekly report and we can chat async.”</span></i></p>
  437. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Set clear boundaries. Then communicate them to others.</span></p>
  438. <h3><b>4- Build Relationships With Other Introverts</b></h3>
  439. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Business gurus like to say that they became successful all by themselves.</span></p>
  440. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But the truth is great entrepreneurs have great entrepreneurial communities.</span></p>
  441. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There’s no such thing as </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">self-made</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
  442. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Everyone is </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">network-made</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
  443. <p><b>Don’t let introversion be an excuse for not developing key relationships.</b></p>
  444. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">With that being said, when you do communicate with others &#8211; have a tight filter.</span></p>
  445. <ul>
  446. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Text before you call</span></li>
  447. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Call before you Zoom</span></li>
  448. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Zoom before you meet in person.</span></li>
  449. </ul>
  450. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And don’t take meetings unless you absolutely want to.</span></p>
  451. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just because someone asks for your time doesn’t mean they&#8217;re entitled to it.</span></p>
  452. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">(</span><a href="https://ctt.ac/I4TAw" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Share this on X/Twitter</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">)</span></p>
  453. <h3><b>5- Extroversion Is A Skill</b></h3>
  454. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Remember Robyn?</span></p>
  455. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After her brief speech, she realized that public speaking wasn’t as scary as she initially thought it was.</span></p>
  456. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The same goes for ANY social interaction.</span></p>
  457. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Most of the friction happens before any interaction actually occurs.</span></p>
  458. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Two tips to get over the initial discomfort:</span></p>
  459. <ol>
  460. <li><b> Start Small</b></li>
  461. </ol>
  462. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Interacting with people is a skill.</span></p>
  463. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And like any skill, it takes lots and lots of reps.</span></p>
  464. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Don’t expect to be perfect at the start. Just focus on taking the smallest step in the right direction.</span></p>
  465. <ul>
  466. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of hosting an event → host a small dinner with close friends.</span></li>
  467. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of getting on stage in front of 100 people → talk to 1 person.</span></li>
  468. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of asking someone on a date → give a compliment to a stranger.</span></li>
  469. </ul>
  470. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You can’t improve what you don’t start. Keep starting! <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f49a.png" alt="💚" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></p>
  471. <ol start="2">
  472. <li><b> Follow the Law of 100</b></li>
  473. </ol>
  474. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Before you judge your results, focus on talking to 100 people.</span></p>
  475. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Slowly, with each rep, your confidence grows.</span></p>
  476. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My team created a free tool (</span><a href="http://lawof100.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">lawof100.com</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">) to help you stay accountable.</span></p>
  477. <h3><b>Do It Your Way</b></h3>
  478. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now you may be thinking, “Easy for you to say, Noah. You’re an extrovert.”</span></p>
  479. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">And I understand why you may think that.</span></p>
  480. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I knock on doors and talk to strangers for my YouTube videos. I speak in front of hundreds of people. I regularly attend entrepreneurial conferences and meetups.</span></p>
  481. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But behind the 1% that you see on social media is someone who still gets nervous before walking up to strangers. Someone who despises long drawn-out Zoom meetings. And someone who would rather curl up on the couch with mi novia than go to another conference.</span></p>
  482. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Getting outside of yourself is a SKILL that you improve at with time and practice.</span></p>
  483. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The point is:</span></p>
  484. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s possible to be successful as an introvert.</span></p>
  485. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s possible to become a confident, charismatic speaker.</span></p>
  486. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s possible to build the business of your dreams YOUR way.</span></p>
  487. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But you have to start NOW.</span></p>
  488. <p>&nbsp;</p>
  489. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Rooting for you,</span></p>
  490. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Noah <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f32e.png" alt="🌮" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></p>

  591. <p><strong><span style="font-weight: 400;">Being an entrepreneur is a lot like being a scientist &#8211; you start with a hypothesis, run tests, and iterate as you go.</span></strong></p>
  592. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At AppSumo, we’ve tested hundreds of strategies. Most failed. Some did okay. A handful propelled our business to new heights.</span></p>
  593. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Today, I’ll be revealing the 5 strategies that made us over $10M EACH.</span></p>
  594. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Let’s gooo!</span></p>
  595. <h2><b>1- Use Prefluencers</b></h2>
  596. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When we started AppSumo, I paid Tim Ferriss $5,000 a month to sponsor his website. We did that for 2+ years and made millions from it.</span></p>
  597. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fast forward to today &#8211; Tim charges a MINIMUM of $50,000 (!!) per podcast and is highly selective with his sponsors.</span></p>
  598. <div id="attachment_15463" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://tim.blog" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-15463" class="size-medium wp-image-15463" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-300x37.png" alt="" width="300" height="37" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-300x37.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-150x18.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic.png 512w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-15463" class="wp-caption-text">Our original ad on Tim’s site</p></div>
  599. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Massive growth opportunities happen when you find things before the market. Find prefluencers BEFORE they get market-rate expensive.</span></p>
  600. <p><b>Lesson 1: If everyone’s doing it, you’re late</b></p>
  601. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In marketing, there’s a concept called The Law of Diminishing Returns.</span></p>
  602. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When everyone is using the same marketing strategy, it’s hard to get a great return on your marketing budget.</span></p>
  603. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead, seek ways to do things differently.</span></p>
  604. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">How?</span></p>
  605. <p><b>Lesson 2: Pay attention to what captures your attention</b></p>
  606. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ignore follower count. Ignore views. Ignore likes.</span></p>
  607. <p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">Who’s putting out stuff you enjoy?</span></i></p>
  608. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Prefluencers most likely won’t be found on your For You page. They’ll be found when you’re down a deep rabbit hole &#8211; and stumble across something that catches your attention.</span></p>
  609. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Once you’ve found someone who puts out stuff you like, TELL THEM!</span></p>
  610. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Feel free to steal this simple template:</span></p>
  611. <p><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Hey [Name] &#8211; absolutely loved [thing you love]. [Reason why you loved it]. Keep crushing! <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f44a.png" alt="👊" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />”</span></i></p>
  612. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Get in the habit of reaching out to people when you don’t need anything from them.</span></p>
  613. <h2><b>2- AppSumo Originals</b></h2>
  614. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After doing a bunch of giveaways, we created software to make it easier for ourselves. Then we turned that software into a product called </span><a href="http://kingsumo.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">KingSumo</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> for other companies.</span></p>
  615. <div id="attachment_15464" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://tidycal.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-15464" class="wp-image-15464 size-medium" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-1-300x140.png" alt="" width="300" height="140" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-1-300x140.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-1-150x70.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-1.png 512w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-15464" class="wp-caption-text">TidyCal.com in action</p></div>
  616. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So we doubled down and repeated this for other areas of our business.</span></p>
  617. <ul>
  618. <li><a href="https://tidycal.com/" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">TidyCal</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (A Calendly alternative)</span></li>
  619. <li><a href="https://sendfox.com/" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">SendFox</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> (a MailChimp alternative)</span></li>
  620. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">And our new DocuSign alternative (coming soon)</span></li>
  621. </ul>
  622. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Now, our AppSumo Originals products are the #1 driver of NEW customers (Over 30% of ALL AppSumo customers have come from them).</span></p>
  623. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It doesn’t just have to be software. It can be as simple as a template, checklist, or piece of email copy. The key is that you’re solving your own problems and then sharing the solution.</span></p>
  624. <p><b>Lesson 1: Use frameworks to help prioritize what you build</b></p>
  625. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Frameworks help you make better decisions without the mental strain.</span></p>
  626. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At AppSumo, we use 3 filters to decide what to build:</span></p>
  627. <ol>
  628. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Do we want this solution?</span></li>
  629. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Does it have word of mouth built in?</span></li>
  630. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Is there a high-cost alternative that isn’t super established?</span></li>
  631. </ol>
  632. <p><b>Lesson 2: Build for your CORE customers, not new ones</b></p>
  633. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you build a solution that attracts the wrong people, it won’t help your business.</span></p>
  634. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ask yourself, “Who is the target customer I’m trying to attract?”</span></p>
  635. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Then build products that serve those customers the best.</span></p>
  636. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Remember: New entrepreneurs focus on customer acquisition. Experienced entrepreneurs focus on customer retention and referrals.</span></p>
  637. <p><b>Lesson 3: Build WITH public, not in public</b></p>
  638. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Over the past 5 years, we’ve built 6 other software tools that no one uses because we didn’t involve our customers in the process.</span></p>
  639. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just because you build something, doesn&#8217;t mean your customers will love it.</span></p>
  640. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Rather than hope your customers will like your solution &#8211; build WITH your customers.</span></p>
  641. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A recent example: we created a group of  ~1,000 people to read early versions of Million Dollar Weekend and give feedback.</span></p>
  642. <div id="attachment_15465" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://milliondollarweekend.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-15465" class="size-medium wp-image-15465" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-2-300x139.png" alt="" width="300" height="139" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-2-300x139.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-2-150x70.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-2.png 512w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-15465" class="wp-caption-text">Help from early readers</p></div>
  643. <h2><b>3- Giveaways</b></h2>
  644. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A while back, I was browsing through a women’s website (don’t ask me why haha) and saw that they were giving away a free trip to Italy.</span></p>
  645. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Hmm, that’s neat.” I thought to myself. “I wonder how we could do something like that for AppSumo?”</span></p>
  646. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So we ran the math. After assessing what our target customer would want, we decided to give away a lifetime subscription to Dropbox ($100/year x 70 years = ~$7000).</span></p>
  647. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Only a few days later, we received 250,000 email signups! Since then, it’s generated over $15M in revenue (We’re still paying for this person’s Dropbox <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f605.png" alt="😅" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />).</span></p>
  648. <p><a href="http://appsumo.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-15466 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-3.png" alt="" width="250" height="250" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-3.png 250w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-3-150x150.png 150w" sizes="(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px" /></a></p>
  649. <p><b>Lesson 1: Look outside your own industry.</b></p>
  650. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When we only look at our direct competitors for inspiration, we end up playing behind.</span></p>
  651. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead, seek inspiration in wildly different verticals:</span></p>
  652. <ul>
  653. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Read luxury wine blogs</span></li>
  654. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Talk to strangers on the street</span></li>
  655. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sign up for a children’s toys newsletter</span></li>
  656. </ul>
  657. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">To think differently, consume differently.</span></p>
  658. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">(</span><a href="https://ctt.ac/e9zBD" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Share this on X/Twitter</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">)</span></p>
  659. <p><b>Lesson 2: Double down on what’s working</b></p>
  660. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The term “Double down” gets thrown around a lot &#8211; so most ignore it.</span></p>
  661. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But the simplest way to get better results is to do more of what’s already working.</span></p>
  662. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">After the Dropbox giveaway, we realized how powerful this marketing strategy truly was.</span></p>
  663. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So we did lifetime giveaways every week for the next year. We did Netflix, Evernote, and Spotify. And we’re STILL doing giveaways 15 years later. Sign up for </span><a href="http://appsumo.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">AppSumo.com</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> &#8211; we’re giving away a CYBERtruck for Sumo Day <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f917.png" alt="🤗" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></p>
  664. <h2><b>4- Being public</b></h2>
  665. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Back in 2000 (when I had luscious locks), I started blogging on okdork.com about things going on while I was in college.</span></p>
  666. <p><a href="http://noahkagan.com" data-wpel-link="internal"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-15467 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-4-300x149.png" alt="" width="300" height="149" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-4-300x149.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-4-150x74.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/5-things-email-pic-4.png 512w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
  667. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">24 years later? I’m STILL tweeting, blogging, and creating videos online.</span></p>
  668. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Being public has generated me more money than everything else on this list COMBINED.</span></p>
  669. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s how I’ve connected with amazing people like Tim Ferriss, Ramit Sethi, and my business partner Chad Boyda. It’s also how we reached the Trending page on Twitter for Million Dollar Weekend.</span></p>
  670. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Content is a magnet for opportunity. <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f9f2.png" alt="🧲" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></p>
  671. <p><b>Lesson 1: Follow The Law of 100</b></p>
  672. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">If you don’t know what your unique angle or story is &#8211; follow The Law of 100:</span></p>
  673. <ul>
  674. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Put out 100 videos</span></li>
  675. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;"> Write 100 newsletters</span></li>
  676. <li><span style="font-weight: 400;">Create 100 blog posts</span></li>
  677. </ul>
  678. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bottom line: Just start putting stuff out there. (You can use </span><a href="http://lawof100.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">lawof100.com</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to help)</span></p>
  679. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Your unique voice is found through volume and repetition.</span></p>
  680. <h2><b>5- Email Marketing</b></h2>
  681. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For the first 12 months of AppSumo &#8211; every time we launched a deal, I had to beg for press. It was terrible.</span></p>
  682. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Then my friend Hiten Shah suggested that we start collecting our customers’ emails.</span></p>
  683. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It sounds simple in hindsight… but that piece of advice changed everything.</span></p>
  684. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Fast forward 15 years later, we generate nearly $50M a YEAR in revenue just from our email list.</span></p>
  685. <p><b>Lesson 1: Own your distribution</b></p>
  686. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Relying on social or paid media is like building a castle in the sand. You don’t really control your connection.</span></p>
  687. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Email allows you to own the connection between your customers. You don’t have to worry about begging for publicity or being randomly shadow-banned.</span></p>
  688. <p><b>Lesson 2: Create repeatable systems</b></p>
  689. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">50% of AppSumo’s email revenue is from email flows.</span></p>
  690. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Email flows are an automated set of emails that get sent to new subscribers.</span></p>
  691. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of writing a new email every time, they automatically receive emails we created beforehand.</span></p>
  692. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Don’t just work hard. Work smart. <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f90c.png" alt="🤌" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></p>
  693. <p><b>Lesson 3: Don’t just sell, educate &amp; entertain</b></p>
  694. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A good rule of thumb for email marketing:</span></p>
  695. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Even if people don’t buy, will they learn something or enjoy reading?</span></p>
  696. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Nobody likes feeling sold to. Everybody likes learning new things and feeling entertained.</span></p>
  697. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Craft your emails accordingly.</span></p>
  698. <h2><b>The more shots you take, the ‘luckier’ you get</b></h2>
  699. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At AppSumo, we’ve failed hundreds of times before these 5 strategies took off.</span></p>
  700. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Successful entrepreneurs view failure as feedback. They know that true failure is never starting.</span></p>
  701. <p><a href="http://twitter.com/noahkagan" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-15468 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-16-300x300.png" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-16-300x300.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-16-1024x1024.png 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-16-150x150.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-16-768x768.png 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Mountain-of-Nos-16.png 1080w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
  702. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">(</span><a href="https://ctt.ac/Y1iU9" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Share this on X/Twitter</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">)</span></p>
  703. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Try lots of things. Throw shit at the wall. Most won’t stick. Some will. The ones that win pay for the losses 10x over.</span></p>
  704. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">You only need to be right ONCE to win.</span></p>
  705. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I help you do this and start your million-dollar business in under 48 hours in </span><a href="https://noahkagan.com/mdwbook/" data-wpel-link="internal"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Million Dollar Weekend</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. 877. <p>In this email, I want to dive deeper into how we used testing and data to iterate our way to the current cover (and how you can use the same principles for your business).</p>
  878. <p>Let’s dive in…</p>
  879. <h3><strong>1- Finish Strong</strong></h3>
  880. <p>Whether we want to believe it or not, people DO judge a book by its cover. And if they never pick up your book because the cover sucks, they’ll never get to the good stuff inside.</p>
  881. <p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://milliondollarweekend.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-15456 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/01.26.23_MDW_HC_Comps-300x236.jpg" alt="" width="457" height="359" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/01.26.23_MDW_HC_Comps-300x236.jpg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/01.26.23_MDW_HC_Comps-150x118.jpg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/01.26.23_MDW_HC_Comps-768x603.jpg 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/01.26.23_MDW_HC_Comps.jpg 1008w" sizes="(max-width: 457px) 100vw, 457px" /></a><em>Early renditions of the cover</em></p>
  882. <p>By the time my publishers sent me 50 book covers to review, I had already spent years writing and rewriting the contents of the book. We were getting close to launch, and it would have been easy to just pick one of the covers provided.</p>
  883. <p>But my mother always told me to “<strong>finish strong</strong>” &#8211; you always forget how hard you ran after the race is over. Last lap matters most. Why work so hard on your product, only to not do the marketing?</p>
  884. <p>When I spoke with <a href="https://twitter.com/JamesClear" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/8g4vnq&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708183874623000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3BHmf2xmcD0BItFhLHz9rb" data-wpel-link="external"><u>James Clear</u></a>, he told me that he tested 300 different book covers. 300!</p>
  885. <p>So I knew that it was essential to have everything–the title, subtitle, color, font, and graphics–dialed in.</p>
  886. <h3><strong>2- Test, Test, then Test Some More</strong></h3>
  887. <p>The easiest way to improve your business is to ASK. You can do it with data and you can do it qualitatively with customer opinion. Testing should NOT replace you making decisions but inform better decision making.</p>
  888. <p>We set up inexpensive campaigns in Facebook ads by running them in affordable countries. In total, we spent $377 on 7.8M impressions that garnered 50k clicks ($.007 a click), targeting men aged 18-65 in China, India, and Singapore who speak English.</p>
  889. <p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://milliondollarweekend.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/2jylll&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708183874623000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2SBD4d8dxRZLI86soYM2Oa" data-wpel-link="external"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-15458" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/first-fb-test-with-multi-covers-300x92.jpg" alt="" width="773" height="237" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/first-fb-test-with-multi-covers-300x92.jpg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/first-fb-test-with-multi-covers-1024x315.jpg 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/first-fb-test-with-multi-covers-150x46.jpg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/first-fb-test-with-multi-covers-768x236.jpg 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/first-fb-test-with-multi-covers-1536x473.jpg 1536w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/first-fb-test-with-multi-covers.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 773px) 100vw, 773px" /></a></p>
  890. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>Initial Facebook ad test results</em></p>
  891. <p>Then we looked at the clickthrough rate for each cover. The covers that performed the best included the ‘snapping fingers’ graphic, Million Dollar Weekend with a golden ticket, and Million Dollar Weekend with a calendar.</p>
  892. <p>Next, we tested our top results against each other in 5 more iterations of the ad test. The ‘snapping fingers’ graphic won with a 0.83% clickthrough rate. Nice!</p>
  893. <h3><strong>3- ‘Broken Door Problem’</strong></h3>
  894. <p>I felt confident about using the ‘snapping fingers’ graphic and liked that it represented taking action quickly. But there was a lot more to consider, like the subtitle, and background color.</p>
  895. <p>For a long time, the subtitle was “<em>Build a business so quickly there’s no time to chicken out</em>.” Sometimes when something in your life has been the same for a while, it’s easy just to leave it as it is. I call this the ‘<strong>Broken Door Problem</strong>.’ But I’ve found that the best entrepreneurs stay curious and wonder if things can improve.</p>
  896. <p>So I did a poll on both Twitter and my email newsletter, testing different variations.</p>
  897. <p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://milliondollarweekend.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/2jylll&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708183874623000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2SBD4d8dxRZLI86soYM2Oa" data-wpel-link="external"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-15454 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/polls-300x135.jpg" alt="" width="731" height="329" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/polls-300x135.jpg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/polls-1024x461.jpg 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/polls-150x68.jpg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/polls-768x346.jpg 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/polls-1536x691.jpg 1536w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/polls.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 731px) 100vw, 731px" /></a><em>Twitter and email polls on the subtitle</em></p>
  898. <p>The clear winner in both polls was “<em><strong>The surprisingly simple way to launch a 7-figure business in 48 hours</strong>.</em>” This is what ended up on the final version. You don’t need a large audience to do these tests &#8211; the whole point is to TEST so you can use some insights on making better decisions.</p>
  899. <p>Next, I wanted to decide the color for the book.</p>
  900. <p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://milliondollarweekend.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/2jylll&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708183874623000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2SBD4d8dxRZLI86soYM2Oa" data-wpel-link="external"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-15459" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Colors-300x259.jpg" alt="" width="442" height="382" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Colors-300x259.jpg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Colors-1024x885.jpg 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Colors-150x130.jpg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Colors-768x664.jpg 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Colors.jpg 1492w" sizes="(max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px" /></a></p>
  901. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>Different color options</em></p>
  902. <p>We used ads again to test. This time, the covers were the same, it was just a difference in color. We tested black, blue, yellow, and green.  Thank you <a href="https://twitter.com/NickAC1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/gdvnzx&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708183874623000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2T9LrW6U-EMGsoBLZs1YC3" data-wpel-link="external"><u>Nick Christensen</u></a> and <a href="https://topgrowthmarketing.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/5q40pl&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708183874623000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2TjwFh6cKebwJYLsIe9LJH" data-wpel-link="external"><u>Top Growth Marketing</u></a> for helping setup all the FB tests.</p>
  903. <p>&nbsp;</p>
  904. <p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/2jylll" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/2jylll&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708183874623000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2SBD4d8dxRZLI86soYM2Oa" data-wpel-link="external"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-15460" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/fb-ads-test-results-300x86.png" alt="" width="701" height="201" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/fb-ads-test-results-300x86.png 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/fb-ads-test-results-1024x294.png 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/fb-ads-test-results-150x43.png 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/fb-ads-test-results-768x221.png 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/fb-ads-test-results-1536x442.png 1536w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/fb-ads-test-results.png 2010w" sizes="(max-width: 701px) 100vw, 701px" /></a></p>
  905. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>Tested the top colors in ads</em></p>
  906. <p>We tested a few times to make sure. After 1M impressions, yellow actually came out on top, but there wasn’t a significant difference between yellow and green. So I made the call to choose green because it’s the color I’ve used on my blog for years.</p>
  907. <h3><strong>4- Look through the eyes of your customer </strong></h3>
  908. <p>When I told my publisher I wanted to choose green, they didn’t think it was a good idea. They said green is bad luck (who knew?) and that we’d be the only green book in the business category.</p>
  909. <p>That made me double take. Being different is scary. It meant it could either go really well or really poorly.</p>
  910. <p>While making my book a bright green might have been a riskier move, when we placed the mockups against all the other business books on the bookshelves, green really popped.</p>
  911. <p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://milliondollarweekend.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/2jylll&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708183874623000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2SBD4d8dxRZLI86soYM2Oa" data-wpel-link="external"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-15461" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Book-Cover-colors-300x219.jpeg" alt="" width="551" height="402" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Book-Cover-colors-300x219.jpeg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Book-Cover-colors-1024x746.jpeg 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Book-Cover-colors-150x109.jpeg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Book-Cover-colors-768x560.jpeg 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Book-Cover-colors.jpeg 1106w" sizes="(max-width: 551px) 100vw, 551px" /></a></p>
  912. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>What stands out more in bookstores?</em></p>
  913. <p>These mockups affirmed my decision. Even when we did a mockup of the book on Amazon, it was clear that the green was the right decision.</p>
  914. <p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://milliondollarweekend.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/2jylll&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708183874623000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2SBD4d8dxRZLI86soYM2Oa" data-wpel-link="external"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-15448" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Amazon-300x120.jpg" alt="" width="698" height="279" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Amazon-300x120.jpg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Amazon-1024x410.jpg 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Amazon-150x60.jpg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Amazon-768x308.jpg 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Amazon-1536x615.jpg 1536w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Amazon.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 698px) 100vw, 698px" /></a></p>
  915. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>Mockup on Amazon, yellow versus green</em></p>
  916. <h3><strong>5- SIZE matters</strong></h3>
  917. <p>One last tweak we made to the book cover, <a href="https://twitter.com/danmartell" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/yonjww&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708183874623000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1sD3o1lbO3rMdBHjeYLK0u" data-wpel-link="external"><u>Dan Martell</u></a> told me to look at the book from afar. Could people walking by a bookstore still see the title? The answer was no, so we made the title much larger to stand out even more for the final version.</p>
  918. <p><a href="http://milliondollarweekend.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class=" wp-image-15453 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/MDW-Title-300x192.jpg" alt="" width="467" height="299" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/MDW-Title-300x192.jpg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/MDW-Title-1024x656.jpg 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/MDW-Title-150x96.jpg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/MDW-Title-768x492.jpg 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/MDW-Title-1536x984.jpg 1536w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/MDW-Title.jpg 1570w" sizes="(max-width: 467px) 100vw, 467px" /></a></p>
  919. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>Change in title size</em></p>
  920. <p>All of these tests and iterations allowed us to get to the final version that people have been loving. <span style="font-weight: 400;"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f49a.png" alt="💚" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span></p>
  921. <p>The difference between those who get good results and those who get great results is a commitment to constant asking, testing and improving.</p>
  922. <p>In your business, what’s something you can test and improve?</p>
  923. <p>&nbsp;</p>
  924. <p><strong>PS</strong>. If you love the cover, you’ll love what’s on the inside of <a href="http://milliondollarweekend.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/yyll5l7w/dgp0ej&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708183874623000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3ad5UUf44IVlkjIPnsUjaQ" data-wpel-link="external"><u>Million Dollar Weekend</u></a> <span style="font-weight: 400;"><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f609.png" alt="😉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></span> I share more about using data to make decisions for your business.</p>

  1017. <p>My answer?</p>
1018. <p><strong>We all can do harder things than we realize.</strong></p>
  1019. <p>Writing a book is hard. Building a business is also hard.</p>
  1020. <p>But they’re not impossible.</p>
1021. <p>There’s been so much I’ve learned from creating Million Dollar Weekend.</p>
1022. <p>Here are 5 reflections from the entire book process (and how you can apply them to your life).</p>
  1023. <p>Let’s dive in…</p>
  1024. <h3><strong>1- Success leaves Clues</strong></h3>
1025. <p>Writing a book is no small decision. It takes YEARS to create (it took me 4). And after it’s finalized? It will be around for the rest of your life.</p>
1026. <p>While I’m a huge advocate for taking action, some things are best learned by talking to others who have already done it.</p>
1027. <p>Before I started, I chatted with best-selling authors like James Clear, Tim Ferriss, Ramit Sethi and others to collect advice and check if I wanted to actually write a book.</p>
1028. <p>When I did start, Tahl Raz (my co-author) had me write 30+ book reports on the top entrepreneurship books to see what they did well and what we could improve on.</p>
  1029. <p style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://milliondollarweekend.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/5n046pon/wy94j6&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708009867796000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3WgudUYh6i10ayA2kVSyhA" data-wpel-link="external"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-15444" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/David-G-Book-Report-246x300.jpg" alt="" width="553" height="675" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/David-G-Book-Report-246x300.jpg 246w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/David-G-Book-Report-123x150.jpg 123w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/David-G-Book-Report-768x936.jpg 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/David-G-Book-Report.jpg 782w" sizes="(max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px" /></a></p>
  1030. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>Example of a book report from David Goggins&#8217;s best seller.</em></p>
1031. <p>You can shortcut success by looking at the breadcrumbs of the greats.</p>
  1032. <h3><strong>2- Build WITH your customers.</strong></h3>
1033. <p>When most people hear the word “author” they think of a lone writer clacking away at a typewriter in a cabin out in the woods.</p>
  1034. <p>At least that’s what I picture. <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f605.png" alt="😅" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
  1035. <p>But not only is that BORING, it’s ineffective.</p>
1036. <p>Instead, I applied the marketing strategies I learned at Mint (explained in <a href="https://milliondollarweekend.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/5n046pon/wy94j6&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708009867796000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3WgudUYh6i10ayA2kVSyhA" data-wpel-link="external"><u>Million Dollar Weekend</u></a>) to create the book WITH my customers.</p>
1037. <p>I call this the <strong>Survey to Sale Method</strong>. More on this in a future email.</p>
1038. <p>After I wrote the first draft, my early readers pointed out what was missing and what I needed to double down on.</p>
1039. <p>We ALL have gaps in our thinking. The best way to fill those gaps is to survey your audience, get feedback, and iterate. All the way to the first sale.</p>
  1040. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-15445 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Feedback-300x140.jpg" alt="" width="829" height="387" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Feedback-300x140.jpg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Feedback-150x70.jpg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Feedback-1536x715.jpg 1536w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Feedback.jpg 1556w" sizes="(max-width: 829px) 100vw, 829px" /></p>
  1041. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>Help from early readers </em><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f49a.png" alt="💚" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
  1042. <h3><strong>3- Work backwards from your goal</strong></h3>
1043. <p>One of the biggest lessons I learned from James Clear was to plan the book marketing FAR in advance.</p>
1044. <p>I started working on the launch 18 months before the book’s release date.</p>
1045. <p>We created a master spreadsheet where we coordinated podcasts, scheduled content, secured bulk buys, tracked the Launch Team growth, and forecasted sales. Essentially planning every aspect of the launch MONTHS before we needed to.</p>
1046. <p><strong>Marketing your product should not be a surprise.</strong> The best way to do that is to plan in advance.</p>
  1047. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-15446 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Sheet-300x120.jpg" alt="" width="863" height="345" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Sheet-300x120.jpg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Sheet-1024x408.jpg 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Sheet-150x60.jpg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Sheet-768x306.jpg 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Sheet-1536x612.jpg 1536w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Sheet.jpg 1576w" sizes="(max-width: 863px) 100vw, 863px" /></p>
1048. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>We planned content for every single day leading up to the launch.</em></p>
1049. <p>Once we set our goal of 25,000 book sales within 30 days, we could plan how we could get there. Planning that far in advance helped us coordinate a huge marketing effort that helped drive a ton of sales for the book.</p>
1050. <p>If you don’t have a clear goal and timeline for your business… make one today.</p>
  1051. <h3><strong>4- We can do hard things</strong></h3>
1052. <p>I hired Tahl Raz so I wouldn’t have to write the book all myself. Got Charlie Hoehn to work his editing magic and then got line-by-line feedback from 1,000+ amazing beta readers.</p>
1053. <p>I thought I was learning to delegate better. But the reality was I was scared that my book wouldn’t help people. So I tried to avoid most of the work.</p>
1054. <p>That came to a head one night when my publisher said the book was due in 2 weeks. I read the latest version of it and couldn’t honestly put my name on the cover.</p>
  1055. <p>I had to face myself.</p>
1056. <p>Then I started getting feedback from people 1 by 1. I meticulously went over every word. And started working 15 hour days to improve the book (thank you girlfriend for bringing me food!). I realized I could do a book that can help change peoples lives in a weekend and that every one of my readers can do the same for themselves!</p>
  1057. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-15443 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Chapter-300x171.jpg" alt="" width="781" height="445" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Chapter-300x171.jpg 300w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Chapter-1024x582.jpg 1024w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Chapter-150x85.jpg 150w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Chapter-768x437.jpg 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Chapter.jpg 1312w" sizes="(max-width: 781px) 100vw, 781px" /></p>
  1058. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>Feedback and help</em></p>
1059. <p>This is the same for everyone. You can do hard things. You can live an amazing life. You can start today. <strong>But you have to face the thing you’ve been avoiding.</strong></p>
1060. <h4><strong>5- Focus on the input, not the output</strong></h4>
1061. <p>I didn’t constantly check my book’s performance on Amazon…the first time I checked the Amazon ranking was the morning of the book launch (peaked at 18).</p>
1062. <p>(<em>I still don’t know what it is today. Literally, can someone tell me? Ha!)</em></p>
1063. <p>Instead, I reminded myself constantly to focus on the inputs in my control:</p>
  1064. <ul>
  1065. <li>How many emails I reply to</li>
  1066. <li>How many DMs I answer</li>
  1067. <li>How many social posts we create</li>
1068. <li>How many people I ask to be on their podcasts</li>
  1069. </ul>
1070. <p>Our ego and vanity love to know the outcomes of our actions. But if we can get the joy and reward from the inputs &#8211; we will sustain longer and results will come.</p>
  1071. <p><a href="https://milliondollarweekend.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-15442 aligncenter" src="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Bestseller-288x300.jpg" alt="" width="389" height="405" srcset="https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Bestseller-288x300.jpg 288w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Bestseller-144x150.jpg 144w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Bestseller-768x801.jpg 768w, https://noahkagan.com/wp-content/uploads/Bestseller.jpg 915w" sizes="(max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px" /></a></p>
  1072. <p style="text-align: center;"><em>Yay </em><img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f973.png" alt="🥳" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
  1073. <p>What a wild ride…</p>
1074. <p>This book is my life’s work. It’s the culmination of everything I’ve learned in entrepreneurship in one place.</p>
  1075. <p>If you’re willing to <a href="https://milliondollarweekend.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=https://sendfox.com/trk/click/5n046pon/o0842o&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1708009867796000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3tXnJlbWMSnM4BKM0OmNWZ" data-wpel-link="external"><u>take a chance on yourself</u></a>, the world wants you to win.</p>
  1076. <p>Uncle Noah&#8217;s rooting for you. <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/14.0.0/72x72/1f49a.png" alt="💚" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
