94.
Golfers sometimes find it hard to prevent movement in their wrists during their putting stroke. A thick putter grip has a wider area for your hands to wrap around helping encourage a smooth pendulum swing and helping you control the face of the putter better. A Thick grip does this by preventing your wrists from hinging during your putting stroke which can be caused by using a putter grip that is too small.

 104.
The advantages of a thick putter grip can often help golfers alleviate some common problems that they might have when it comes to there putting stroke. Some advantages fall into the following categories but ultimately are down to personal preference.

 105.

 106.

 107.
A thick putter grip can help steady your hands, having a larger diameter giving your hands more surface area to hold so you can relax your hand and arm muscles ensuring your stroke is more consistent.

 108.

 109.

 110.

 111.
A thick putter grip can help if your grip pressure is too tight. A thick putter grip can often help reduce movement and twisting in the hands, fingers and wrists. This will give you the added benefit of increasing stroke consistency and reducing the potential of missed putts and strokes.

 112.

 113.

 114.

 115.
A thick putter grip can help correct a swing issue that you may have. For example, a thick grip can help align the hips and the body allowing the torso to be more dominant during your putting stroke.

 116.

 117.

 118.

 119.
A thick putter grip can help with putting accuracy. A thick putter grip can help lessen this wrist impact through the stroke and enable a better, more consistent roll on the ball. It can also encourage the bigger arm muscles to dominate, reducing the impact of twitchy wrists.

 120.

 121.

 122.

 123.
The flat surface on the front of a thick putter grip is often wider so your thumbs have a better feel for the line up with your target line, helping your ball alignment.

 135.

 136.

 137.
A thick putter grip can sometimes feel different in your hands depending on the size of your hands. This might take some time to get used to and might mean you have to change your putting style.

 138.

 139.

 140.

 141.
A thick putter grip is often heavier than a standard size putter grip. Due to the increase in the weight of a putter grip this can make the putter head feel lighter, making your putter feel different and require adjustments in your stroke to get used to changes in your putting distance.

 142.

 143.

 144.

 145.
A thick putter grip can limit the movement of small muscles in your hands and wrists often benefiting higher handicap golfers. But some golfers prefer feeling the small muscles and place more importance on being able to activate these when putting and judge distance and power in their putting stroke.

 741.
The advantages of a bigger putter grip can often help golfers alleviate some common problems that they might have when it comes to there putting stroke. Some advantages fall into the following categories, but ultimately are down to personal preference.

 742.

 743.

 744.
An oversize putter grip can help if your grip pressure is too tight. The bigger the putter grip size and the side profile of the putter grip can often help reduce movement and twisting in the hands, fingers and wrists.

 745.

 746.

 747.
This will give you the added benefit of increasing stroke consistency and reducing the potential of missed putts and strokes.

 748.

 749.

 750.
A bigger putter grip can help correct a swing issue that you may have. For example, a bigger grip can help align the hips and the body allowing the torso to be more dominant during your putting stroke.

 751.

 752.

 753.

 754.
A bigger putter grip can help with putting accuracy. A bigger putter grip can help lessen this wrist impact through the stroke and enable a better, more consistent roll on the ball. It can also encourage the bigger arm muscles to dominate, reducing the impact of twitchy wrists.

 766.

 767.

 768.
Some bigger putter grips are often heavier than standard size putter grips. The heavier weight of a putter grip can sometimes make the head of the putter feel lighter. This might make your putter feel different and take a little time to get used to putting with it again.

 769.

 770.

 771.

 772.
Sometimes bigger putter grips can feel different in your hands due to the fact that they are larger in size. But the feel of a putter grip will be different with any putter grip you chose to try.

 773.

 774.

 775.

 776.
As larger putter grips effectively limit the movement of the small muscles in your hands and wrists during putting this can often benefit higher handicap golfers. But some golfers prefer feeling the small muscles and place greater importance on being able to activate these when putting.

Or, you might be saying an inch or two inside the ball, and neither statements would be factually incorrect. However, it’s not about positioning your eyes in a certain position, so that your playing partners on a Saturday morning think that your set-up is “textbook” perfect, yet you still don’t hole your fair share of putts? How does that make sense? It’s not about looking good, it’s about holing putts. Which you will be doing a lot more of after you improve your putting accuracy

Through my work over the past 3 years with P2 Grips, I have been very fortunate to get to work with, and speak with some really quality putting coaches, and they will all tell you that your eyes do not have to be in a certain prescribed position. They need to be in the best position that works for you. This position is a position that allows you to see a straight line.

 1143.
Is A Straight Line Really A Straight Line?

 1144.
My eyes were first opened (excuse the pun) to the tricks your eyes can play when I went over to visit Dr. Paul Hurrion back in 2013. One of the things he did with me was set-up about a 10-12ft putt. I set-up over the ball and then he positioned a ball halfway directly between my ball and the hole. The question he asked was where does the ball in the middle look to you? Is it in a straight line between you and the hole or slightly left or right of that imaginary straight line? The answer was no, the ball in the middle looked like it was too far to the left, simply not in line. Paul then told me to move the ball in the middle to where I believed it was is a straight line, I moved the ball in the middle a touch to the right, set-up over the ball again and then said “yes, now I’m happy”.

 1145.
At this point Paul took out a laser alignment tool and positioned the red laser directly through the ball I was setting up over and the hole. I was very surprised to see just how much the ball in the middle was positioned to the right of this laser line, it definitely was not on a straight line between my ball and the hole. In short, my perception of a straight line was right of the hole, and this resulted in me aiming too far to the right.

 1177.
If you have an alignment rod you can use that, if not I often have people use a standard measuring tape, and quite often people find the measuring tape more effective in generating feedback. The great thing about the measuring tape is that you can very quickly check your perception over various lengths, and be sure that your perception doesn’t change as the putts get longer or shorter.

 1178.
Start at 6ft, pull out the tape and place it on the ground. You can position a ball at the end of the tape and set-up to it, but you do not need to have the ball, the tape alone is fine. Set-up to the end of the tape and build your normal stance, position your putter face square against the end of the tape and when you are ready look down towards the other end of the tape measure.

 1179.
Is the end of the tape measure where you thought it would be? Does it feel like it should be further left/ right of where it is?

 1180.
When I did this the first time again it showed up my tendency of aiming right. If I set-up in what use to be my “normal” set-up I felt the end of the measuring tape should have been positioned further right than where it was. Now, you might see it on the opposite side, depending on how you set-up?

 1332.

 1333.

 1334.
There are a whole host of benefits that come from practicing your putting at home, so let’s quickly go through my top 3:

 1335.

 1336.

 1337.

 1338.

 1339.
You are in the comfort of your own home for a start, so it doesn’t matter whether you are wearing a shirt and tie, shorts and your favourite t-shirt or even your pyjamas, no one can see you! Unlike going to practice at the golf course where you need to be wearing the correct golfing attire just to use the putting green.

 1340.

 1341.

 1342.

 1343.

 1344.

 1345.

 1346.

 1347.
You can practice when you like where you like and for as long as you like. You can practice in a “block” style approach, where you set aside a certain amount of time and practice your putting for the allotted time. You can have a more varied approach and split the practice throughout the day, morning/ evening etc. or you can spend 5 minutes here and there while watching a football game, a PGA Tour event or any other sport that you are into, it’s what works best for you.

 1348.

 1349.

 1350.

 1351.

 1352.

 1353.

 1354.

 1355.
The biggest benefit of practicing at home is that it allows you to solely focus on the putting “stroke” the actual movement of the putter. At home, you are not having to factor in the wind, the dew on the green, the amount of slope/ break on the green, the pressure that you are putting yourself under to hole that 6 footer or not 3 putts from 10 foot, whatever it is it doesn’t matter when you are at home, you can just relax!

 1356.

 1357.

 1366.

 1367.
Up Against The Wall

 1368.
One of the most common mistakes I see amongst golfers is the amount of movement in the lower half of their body during the putting stroke, which ultimately leads to upper body movement. Here’s the best putting tip I can give you to check what you are doing and give you immediate feedback. Firstly, position your backside up against a wall or a door, you just want to be gently touching it but enough to give you good feedback. Set-up into your putting stance and build a solid, strong stance.

 1380.
 1381.

 1382.

 1383.
In these videos below/ above you will see I have set myself in position but as I make my stroke there is an excessive amount of lower body movement where my right hip comes away from the wall, my right knee moves towards the hole almost trying to follow the ball like in a full swing, and this leads to my upper body rotating towards the hole and the head moving too much. This tendency is something that comes from our full swing where your body rotates through impact, and some golfers feel that this is what needs to happen, all be it to a lesser extent, and most often you don’t realise you are doing it. Simply, it is very difficult to keep your upper body quiet when your lower body is moving. Your lower half needs to remain quite, solid and stable.

 1384.

 1385.

 1386.
 1387.

 1396.

 1397.

 1398.
Make a stroke where you feel that both sides of your backside remain in constant contact with the wall throughout your stroke. If you are doing this correctly you will notice how your upper body is now working independently of the lower half. Depending on how much lower body movement you had to begin with, this may feel a little different or massively different, either one is good.

 1399.
Once you have made enough practice then hit some putts using a ball. It does not matter whether you can only hit a putt 5 foot or 15 foot, you will still feel the difference. If you are limited for space and want to feel like you hit the putt a little harder than position a cushion or pillow 5/6 foot in front of you and then you can hit your putts harder. Try it yourself, you will find a difference and it will help you feel the correct movement of both the upper and lower body.

I would place it on the carpet and simply putt to it. I found that it was remarkably easy to hit the bottle time and time again from various distances (that the space allowed for), to the point where I started to question why? Obviously, there were none of the outside influences which I mentioned above, no pressure or consequence of missing, but even still I felt my confidence in rolling a ball towards this bottle were exceedingly high.

 1410.

 1411.
From 5 and 6 foot, even 10 foot, the ball was hitting the bottle with a bit of pace. The ball wasn’t just about reaching the bottle and gently tipping off it, so this showed me that I was stroking the ball with a bit of pace but most importantly that I wasn’t thinking about the “next” putt or what I might leave myself if this ball doesn’t hit the bottle. They were carefree, confident putts and it does make a difference.

 1412.
The other main difference is of course, that this is a can about 6 inches tall sitting on top of the carpet, not a hole sunk 6 inches down into the ground. The target sitting above the ground is much more visible, not to mention the vivid green and yellow colouring of the bottle. I found that the colour had a great deal to do with my ability to take this sense of confidence and freedom to the course. When I set-up over a putt I could clearly imagine that shower gel bottle sitting on top of the carpet and I committed to stroking the putt towards it, as I would have done when I was at home. Picture it in your mind, see the colours and then allow yourself to react the way you do when you practice.

 1413.
I appreciate that this is not a tip you may find on the Golf Channel or any of the magazines but try it for yourself…..it does work. Pick an item that has plenty of colour and allows you to picture it quite easily if you were to close your eyes and picture it, it doesn’t have to be very detailed when it comes to what is on the bottle, just colours.

 1414.
However, that is what works for me, we are not all the same and we do not all react to the same thing. So, you may opt for a plain black shampoo bottle, deodorant can, hairspray bottle, favourite mug……whatever it is that works for you and that you can practice with over and over again!

 1415.
The Physio Sport bottle I used years ago was thrown out at some stage so I had to find something new, and it’s no surprise that I went for a Lucozade water bottle that had very similar colours because they were colours that my mind’s eye could see very clearly when I was putting on the course. In reality there was a hole there, but in my mind was simply rolling a ball at my bottle that was 6 inches above the ground.

 1513.
Before we get into the specifics of putting drills to improve your putting at home there are a few things you should consider about putting routines before you get started improving.

 1521.

 1522.
The first part to improve your putting at home is creating a routine. A putting routine allows you to create consistency, build on your technique and focus on specific areas to improve your putting game. More importantly, it allows you to create consistency and continually improve over time ensuring you are building a foundation for putting success.

 1523.
Why is a routine important, well Arnold Palmer said it best noting “Putting is like wisdom – partly a natural gift and partly the accumulation of experience and routine.”

 1524.
So let us help you build your experience and routine today. Below is a putting routine I created for one of my students I’ve been coaching recently, which I’ve been told has been printed and stuck onto their computer screen to remind them (feel free to copy it and do the same).

 1525.
This routine starts with a goal to remind them why they are improving their putting so they don’t lose focus or disregard their practice routine. It was created so that they could pick their putting practice up when they have a spare 10 minutes to improve putting at home when they are between emails or before breakfast alternating between A and B putting drills on different days.

 1526.
Their putting practice goals may be different to yours but the set putting drills, focus and time allow for them to form their routine to improve there putting at home.

 1589.
Putting Drill #1: Four Ball Distance Control

 1590.
Putting drill focus: This drill is focused on practicing and improving your putting distance control with the main aim of structuring the putting drill so you build on your distance control with each practice putt giving you a proper understanding of your current control technique.

 1591.
Putting drill Instructions:

 1592.
Create a 2 foot by 2 foot box or any zone using tape or some sort of markers (four glasses will also work great). The goal is to putt all 4 balls into your zone with each ball going slightly further than the previous ball. But the 4th ball can’t go outside of the zone. Start from 3 feet away from the zone and move the distance back as you gain a better sense of distance control.

 1593.
Items needed for the putting drill:

 1594.
Four golf balls, four place marks or some tape, measuring tape (optional) and a putter.

 1595.
—–

 1596.
Putting drill #2: Putt to a card or sticky note

 1597.
Putting drill focus: This is a hard practice drill aimed at improving your putting distance control and accuracy from your preferred practice distance. Using a small target zone like a playing card or sticky note helps simulate the hole on a green ensuring your working on the alignment of your putter face especially from longer distances.

 1598.
Putting drill Instructions:

 1599.
Get a playing card or a sticky note and put it on your floor or carpet, 3 feet, 6 feet, 9 feet or 12 feet away from your start line. Whatever the distance you want to practice on.

 1600.
Now practice putting the golf ball with enough speed and distance that it stops on top of the card or sticky note. If it touches it and goes past it, try again until it lands on your target.

 1601.
Items needed for the putting drill:

 1602.
Golf balls, sticky note or playing card, measuring tape (optional) and a putter

 1603.
—–

 1604.
Putting Drill #3: Putt to an object

 1605.
Putting drill focus: This putting drill is aimed at improving your putting distance control and accuracy from your preferred practice distance. This is one of the best drills I have used for practicing your putting at home. I spent many a year using this drill at home when I was training to become a PGA Professional. The further the distance the more focus you will need to place on hitting the sweet spot of the putter if you starting line is correct and you miss the object you’ll know you have opened or closed the putter face during this drill.

 1608.
Mark your required practice distance from whatever length. I have a 3, 6, 9, 12 markers usually set and focus on what distance I want to practice on. Line the ball up and try and hit the object with the ball. Line your golf balls up in a circle around the object so you don’t have to keep placing them.

 1609.
Pro tip: Another way to practice is mark all the distances you want to practice from and move back a distance once you hit the object (so once you hit from the 3 feet mark, move to 6 feet mark etc.). If you miss, start all over again until you’ve hit the object from all your marked distances. This will help practice how your muscle memory is doing as you progress through the drill.

 1613.
Putting Drill #4: Tee at the back and front of the ball

 1614.
Putting drill focus: This putting drill is aimed at helping you get the pace of the ball right, which is often one of the most important aspects of great putting. Practicing this drill will help you find gentle acceleration of the golf ball through impact to ensure a smooth roll and consistent distance control of your putts by keeping a relatively even length of stroke either side of the ball.

 1615.
Putting drill Instructions:

 1616.
Position your ball. Now place tees above the glide path of the ball at various distances ahead of the ball and behind it so that the line of tees match the trajectory of a full swing of your putter backwards and forward. Make sure none of the tees aren’t directly in front of the ball.

 1617.
Ensure that each corresponding tee is equal in length from the distance to the ball (e.g. the first tee behind the ball is the same distance as the first tee in front of the ball, same for the second tee and third).

 1618.
Now stroke the ball focusing on lining up the swing with corresponding tees at various putting target distances to help refine your pace, distance and accuracy control.

 1619.
Pro tip: The backswing should be a fraction shorter than the follow through to help you find that smooth build-up of speed through impact. Combine this with the book putting drill below to keep the face of your putter square.

 1649.
Place two large books onto your carpet at home and leave enough distance between them so that your putter can barely fit between them. 1695.
Putting Drill #9: Backside up against the wall

 1696.
Putting drill focus: This putting drill is aimed at helping you reduce the movement in both the lower and upper half of your body during the putting stroke. The more you move your body putting, the more you will reduce your chances of holing the putt.

 1697.
This drill focuses on removing the tendency of movement during a putting stroke and is something that comes from our full swing where your body rotates through impact. Some golfers feel that this is what needs to happen, albeit to a lesser extent, and most often you don’t realise you are doing it. Simply, it is very difficult to keep your upper body quiet when your lower body is moving. Your lower half needs to remain quite solid and stable. This putting drill is designed to ensure you grasp the fundamentals of a sound putting stroke by keeping your lower body and head steady.

 1698.
Putting drill Instructions:

 1699.
Firstly, position your backside up against a wall or a door, you just want to be gently touching it but enough to give you good feedback. Set-up into your putting stance and build a solid, strong stance. Now imagine that your lower body is set in concrete.

 1700.
Make a stroke where you feel that both sides of your backside remain in constant contact with the wall throughout your stroke while keeping your head still. If you are doing this correctly you will notice how your upper body is now working independently of the lower half. Depending on how much lower body movement you had to begin with, this may feel a little different or massively different…..either one is good.

 1701.

 1702.
Items needed for the putting drill:

 1715.

 1716.

 1717.
There are a whole host of ways to improve your putting at home, and equally as many benefits so let’s quickly go through my top 3:

 1718.

 1719.
You are in the comfort of your own home for a start, so it doesn’t matter whether you are wearing a shirt and tie, shorts or even your pyjamas…there is no green etiquette here!

 1720.
You can practice when you like where you like and for as long as you like. You can practice in a “block” style approaches like in the routine section above, where you set aside a certain amount of time to improve your putting at home for the allotted time. You can have a more varied approach and split the practice throughout the day, morning/evening etc. or you can spend 5 minutes here and there while watching a football game, a PGA Tour event or any other sport that you are into…do what works best for you.

 1721.
Practicing and improving at home allows you to solely focus on improving the putting “stroke”, which is the actual movement of the putter. At home, you don’t need to factor in the wind, the dew on the green, the amount of slope/ break on the green, the pressure that you are putting yourself under to hole that 6 footer.

 1722.

 1723.
Check out some other putting tips that may help you improve your putting:

 1949.

Having served as a PGA Professional at a golf club for nearly 17 years, it has always surprised me how little golfers know about what they are actually looking for when considering buying a new putter. Quite often when I would ask what they are in the market for and the customer would reply with their preferred length and whether they tended to drift more towards a blade or a mallet style head. The preferred length was normally because “that’s the length I’ve always used”, and likewise with the preferred head shape.

 1950.
More often than not, the customer has used their current putter for many years, purchased off the rack at a standard 34”/35” length, or may have even been handed down to them by a father or grandfather on occasion.

 1951.
However, in complete contrast golfers have often come looking for the complete opposite head shape to their current putter. Putting is like that, a fickle lover – that must be changed from time to time to bring back some newness, excitement and confidence.

 1952.
So, firstly in this edition of the blog I’ll provide some advice – on putter offset, and the how and why some will suit you better than others.

 1953.

 1954.
What is Offset?

 1955.
A putter shaft can be straight or curved as it approaches the putter head. A shaft can be mounted anywhere from the heel to the center of the putter head. A shaft can also be mounted into a hosel, the joint that extends from the putter head. Depending on how the shaft curves or how the hosel is constructed, a putter can have varying degrees of offset.

 1956.
A putter with no offset, the leading edge of the shaft is in direct line with the leading edge of the putter face when looking down at the putter. In a putter with offset, the leading edge of the shaft is slightly ahead of the putter face when looking down.

 1957.
The term “full shaft” offset means that the offset is equal to the width of the shaft, while ½-shaft offset signifies that the offset is roughly equal to half of the width of the shaft.

 1958.

 1959.

 1960.
When selecting a new putter, there’s a lot to investigate, but most golfers forget about the hosel. This seemingly innocent design feature often has the most significant effect on how the club actually swings. Knowing the difference between one hosel design and another can provide some insight into your stroke and what type of putter you are. Let’s examine some of the more popular hosel configurations, and try to help you understand why your putters is working or possibly not working for you?

 1961.

 1962.
No Hosel

 1963.

 1964.
Face-balanced putters often have no hosel, but instead an S-bend shaft that goes directly into the putter head. These putters are designed specifically for golfers who want to take the club straight back and straight through in a piston-like motion. If you typically like to rotate the clubhead during your stroke, these types of putters probably won’t work as well for you, although there are no absolutes in this regard.

 1965.

 1966.

 1967.
Plumber-Neck

 1968.
The plumber-neck is characterized by a horizontal bend just below where the end of the shaft and the hosel meet. This design, which generally provides a medium amount of offset, does a great job of keeping the hands ahead of the clubhead through impact. This tends to make the putter more forgiving and easier to use, which is the reason it’s so popular. Putters with plumber-neck hosels tend to be somewhat toe-down in their weighting scheme, which encourages a slightly inside-square-inside stroke.

 1969.

 1970.

 1971.
Flare-Tip

 1972.
The flare-tip is typically a “shaft-over” hosel, meaning the shaft covers the top of the hosel where the two connect. Putters with flare-tip hosels generally have less offset and are more blade-like in their design. These putters tend to be quite a bit toe-down in their weighting scheme and usually work best for golfers who like to rotate the blade open and shut through the stroke.

 1973.

 1974.

 1975.

 1976.
Center-Shaft

 1977.

1978. The majority of putter models feature shafts that enter the putter head near the heel. Some, however, feature a more centered shaft insert position. This design typically is associated with a flatter lie angle, promoting a low-hands position. Also, the center-shaft position places the swing axis closer to the golf ball, eliciting extra control and a feel many golfers prefer.

 1979.

 1980.

 1981.

 1982.
Slant-Neck

 1983.

1984. These hosels often are plumber-necks that bend back from the shaft line. Usually, this type of putter is used to create a more substantial amount of offset, which promotes more of an upward strike into the golf ball. Another beneficial aspect of the slant-neck design is the position it places the hands in just prior to, and through, impact—just slightly in front of the golf ball.

 1985.

 1986.

 1987.
Long Hosel

 1988.

 1989.
These designs are usually elongated plumber-necks and are used to create face-balancing. Although they look very similar to the standard plumber-neck design, the extra length definitely creates a different feel, which you should take into consideration before selecting a putter with this type of hosel structure. Be aware that the elongated plumber-neck design doesn’t always result in face-balancing; many, in fact, are toe-balanced.

 1990.
Offset putters are preferred by golfers who like to have their hands slightly ahead of the ball during the putting stroke. Some also believe that eye dominance plays a role in fitting offset to the golfer.

 1991.

 1992.
For a right-handed player who has a dominant left eye, the eye closest to the hole, we would typically fit them with a straight shafted putter because that puts their dominant eye over the ball. Putting the ball under the dominant eye helps the player line up the putt with more accuracy. Offset putters typically help golfers keep their hands in front of the ball at impact and promotes less break down in the wrists.

 2028.

Found The Sweetspot Yet?…………Feels Good Doesn’t It!

 2029.

 2030.
It’s great after a blog post when some of you get in touch to say the tip has really helped to improve your putting. So,again “Welcome to P2 Grips!”.When you suddenly start hitting putts from the center of the putter it feels good…..and it feels a lot different. Here is also a blog post on “P2 Grips…Back in Time!”.

 2031.
However, Simon who’s an 11 handicap was in touch to say that even though he was addressing his putts from the sweetspot before trying the drill in my last blog post, his strike on the golf ball now feels completely different……in a good way. So, why is that?

 2032.
You would imagine that if you address the golf ball from the sweetspot of the putter to start with, then you put a good stroke on it, the strike on the ball should feel solid…..right? It became very apparent that even though Simon did not need the pencil to help him align the sweetspot and the golf ball, something was happening which was helping him strike the ball more solid at impact. What was it?

 2033.
At address, you can see from the image below that the sweetspot of the putter is below the equator or center point of the golf ball.“Getting To Know Your Putter”.

 2034.
In order to ensure a good roll on the golf ball we need these two points to be level at the moment of impact, from this position they are obviously not level.

 2035.

 2036.

 2037.
If you are someone who picks the putter up a little too sharply in the back stroke, your angle of attack back towards the golf ball is going to be steep, or simply your putter is going to be travelling downwards too much and the sweetspot of the putter is going to be below that centre point of the golf ball. For this your grip should also be good enough “Creating the Brand New P2 Grip Range.”

 2038.
This leads to a strike which is too high on the face of the putter and results in poor energy transfer to the golf ball. You can improve it even at your home. “How To Improve Your Putting At Home”

 2039.

 2040.

 2041.
If you position a pencil on the ground behind the ball, if your putter strikes the ball in a downward motion you will most likely contact the pencil every time.

 2042.

 2043.
If you have tried my drill using the pencil (see “Finding The Sweetspot” blog post), you can see from the image below what it does to the sweetspot of the putter in relation to the centre of the golf ball.

 2044.

 2045.

 2046.

 2047.
Both are now level at the address position, and because the pencil is in there you are discouraged from moving the putter back towards the ball in a downwards motion. Aligning Your Putter With The Ball is also a key point.

 2048.
So, coming back to Simon, this is what was happening to him. Even though he was addressing the ball opposite the sweetspot, the subsequent mechanics of his stroke lead to inconsistent strikes which lead to an inconsistent putting performance.

 2049.
This drill that Simon is now working on is only a slight change from the last drill which involved the pencil. If you feel you are not striking your putts solid try this and feel the difference:

 2050.

 2051.

 2052.
Position a pencil/pen directly behind the ball, but as close as you can to the bottom of the golf ball.

 2053.

 2054.
Once you make your stroke, the pencil will act as a deterrent to striking down and will encourage a stroke that has more of a positive rise angle through impact. A positive rise through impact is crucial to a consistent roll, now this does not mean that we start to try hit up on the ball as much as possible, the putter head travelling just over the pencil is more than enough to get the ball rolling smoothly. You can “Rent P2 Grips From Clubs To Hire”.

 2055.
Take the time to spend a few minutes working on this drill, you can even do this on a piece of carpet in your home, but the difference you will feel when you take it to the course will be amazing.

 2078.

Putting Tips: Check The Sweet Spot Of Your Putter

 2079.
Again, we warmly say “Welcome to P2 Grips!”. If you read our last post on tips “Aligning Your Putter With The Ball”, where we showed you a golfer not addressing the golf ball from the centre of the putter, since then a few people have got in touch wondering how best to test this themselves and get accurate feedback?

 2080.
In the video and images below I’m going to show you a very simple putting tips to check that the sweet spot of the putter is lined up with the centre of the golf ball. “Creation of The Brand New P2 Grip Range.”

 2081.
Simply get a pencil or a pen, it doesn’t have to be a short pencil like the one in the video, and position directly behind the middle of the ball. Ideally the pencil should be aligned with a target, be it a hole on a putting green, or a cup/glass on the carpet at home. “How To Improve Your Putting At Home”

 2082.

 2083.

 2084.
From here, position the alignment aid of your putter directly above the pencil and go ahead and strike your putt. If the position of the putter looks and feels normal you will know you have been positioning the putter correctly prior to trying this drill. If the position of the putter behind the ball looks strange or different then more than likely you have not been addressing the ball out of the centre of the putter. Finding the sweetspot is also a skill. There are some tips to “Find The SweetSpot! ”

 2085.

 2086.
If you are not striking the ball from the sweet spot, this will lead to the putter face twisting open or closed at impact as a result of the off-centre strike. This will also impart hook spin if struck on the toe side of the sweet spot, or slice spin if struck from the heel side of the putter. “To Know Your Putter”.

 2087.

 2088.
P.S- You don’t have to hover the putter above the pen/pencil, feel free to let the putter sit on it before you start your stroke.

 2089.
We hope these quick putting tips helps your putting. We have also “Rent P2 Grips From Clubs To Hire”.
