20.
Smith-Schuster battled a knee injury all of last season.

Last offseason was a whirlwind for JuJu Smith-Schuster. After winning Super Bowl LVII with the Chiefs, the wide receiver inked a three-year deal with the New England Patriots in free agency.

  21.
But after playing into February, an offseason knee procedure cut into Smith-Schuster’s availability during OTA’s with his new club as he estimates he was 60 percent healthy last spring.

  22.
This offseason, however, rest was the priority — which led to plenty of nights binge watching “Bridgerton” on Netflix. With the added rest, Smith-Schuster believes he is finally at 100 percent.

  23.
“It’s a big difference,” Smith-Schuster said Monday after practice. “It’s not easy coming off a knee injury and having a long season and coming back really [quick]… I feel great, honestly. I feel great. I’ve never felt better. I’m just excited to finally be out here around this time and participating.”

  24.
Battling the injury for the majority of last season, it was a disappointing year for New England’s big free agent addition. Smith-Schuster totaled just 29 catches for 260 yards with a touchdown in 11 games as the knee injury costed him the final month of the season.

  25.
He believes the injuries played a part in his limited production for multiple reasons.

  26.
“A part of it, being on the field and executing and building that chemistry, kind of being on and off,” Smith-Schuster said. “When you’re on the field and available to help the team, you definitely build that chemistry over time.”

  27.
After New England drafted two rookie wide receivers this offseason, their depth chart now stands 11 players deep at the position. While a healthy Smith-Schuster is “excited” about the room, the veteran may need a strong offseason to secure his spot on the roster.

  28.
“The room is definitely crowded,” head coach Jerod Mayo said. “[JuJu] looks good. He’s moving around well. We’ll see today when they’re actually going against someone else, but he looks good and it is a question for the end of the spring, honestly.”

  49.
The Patriots held their first open organized team activity on Monday.

The New England Patriots began Phase 3 of the offseason program on Monday as they held their first of 10 organized team activities.

  50.
While OTA’s do not include pads or contact, there was still plenty to take away from the two-hour session.

  51.
Attendance

  52.
Absentees: LB Matthew Judon, LB Anfernee Jennings, LB Jahlani Tavai, LB Joshua Uche, OT Zuri Henry, OG Cole Strange, WR Kendrick Bourne, DL Davon Godchaux

  53.
Working back from injury, Kendrick Bourne, Cole Strange and Jahlani Tavai watched the majority of practice in street clothes. Head coach Jerod Mayo shared that Bourne (ACL) will not participate throughout the spring while Strange (knee) is considered “week-by-week or you can go month-by-month.”

  54.
As for Judon, who enters the final year of a contract that he likely will want adjusted, Mayo said he has been “in and out” of the building this offseason as he has in years past. Davon Godchaux, like Judon, has no guaranteed money left on his deal.

  55.
Takeaways

  56.
QB snaps: Throughout the day, veteran players received the first and majority of snaps. For the quarterbacks, that meant drills were led off by Jacoby Brissett who was then followed by Bailey Zappe, Drake Maye and Joe Milton. As Mayo shared, that can change daily, however.

  57.
“I think it’s a day-by-day thing,” he said before practice. “You try to keep all those guys around the same rep count, but at the same time, in any given day, this guy could get 30 reps and another guy could get five. But then as we work through the week, it could kind of flip.”

  58.
As for their work on the field, a heavy emphasis was put on footwork in individual drills as they ran through bag work. During team drills, New England focused on early-down work which led to mainly quick game action.

  59.

  62.

  63.
  64.
  65.

  66.
Rookie trio: With veterans receiving most of the action on the field Monday, a group of three rookies stayed late to work at the conclusion of practice. That group consisted of Drake Maye, Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, who worked for roughly 20 minutes together with Maye directing his receivers.

  67.
As New England looks for their new offensive core, it was perhaps a look ahead of what's to come.

  68.
Tackle watch: Despite mainly playing right tackle throughout his NFL career, free agent addition Chuks Okorafor held down the blindside for New England’s top offensive line group during Monday’s session. Following Okorafor was Vederian Lowe, who played 11 games last season, and third-round pick Caedan Wallace.

  69.
It was no surprise to see Michael Onwenu open on the right side, while Calvin Anderson was first up behind him.

  70.
Inside shakeup: With Strange sidelined, second-year guard Sidy Sow took his place at left guard Monday. It's a noticeable switch as Sow impressed at right guard last season. Taking Sow’s old place was then free agent addition Nick Leverett, while fourth-round pick Layden Robinson worked in as well.

  71.
Other moves along the interior of the offensive line included Atonio Mafi seeing time at center and both guard spots and Andrew Stueber moving inside from tackle.

  72.
Outside corner: It was a quiet day for last year’s first-round pick Christian Gonzalez, who saw some action in team drills as he works back from a season-ending shoulder injury. With him sidelined and veteran Jonathan Jones not seeing extensive action, Marco Wilson and Alex Austin manned the cornerback spots.

  73.
Other notes:

  74.

  75.
Free agent addition Antonio Gibson’s speed was evident in the no-contact setting, as well as his wide receiver background. Gibson should have a role for himself in this offense.

  76.
Tyquan Thornton operated as the team’s top X and worked mostly with K.J. Osborn opposite of him. Jalen Reagor and JuJu Smith-Schuster also got work in a group that could be battling for a roster spot.

  77.
With multiple edge players not in attendance, last year’s second-round pick Keion White saw plenty of action — mostly as a stand up outside linebacker.

  78.
New England ended the day running full field sprints for conditioning work. Several coaches joined them, including Dont’a Hightower.

  79.

  80.
The Patriots will be back on the practice fields Tuesday for Day 2 of OTA’s, while media will next be in attendance on May 29.

  180.
7 things to watch as Patriots begin OTAs and minicamp

  181.

  187.
  188.
The Patriots begin the third phase of their offseason workout program on Monday.

The New England Patriots return to the practice fields Monday for the first of 10 organized team activities over the next three weeks. Following OTA’s, the team will hold a three-day mandatory minicamp in June.

  189.
Throughout the currently-scheduled practices, the media will be on hand for seven total — starting on Monday — to get the first on field glimpse of this year’s team.

  190.
While these practices lean more on the instructional side of things as pads are off and contact is at an extreme minimum, there will still be plenty to take from the next few weeks. Here are the top things we’ll be watching for on the back field of Gillette.

  191.
Drake Maye and the rookies

  192.
The Patriots first-round rookie quarterback is rightfully the most important storyline in Foxboro for the foreseeable future. While jobs are not won and lost in the spring, Maye begins OTA’s in a quarterback competition in which veteran Jacoby Brissett is expected to see the initial reps. Maye will be watched closely to see how the 21-year old adjusts to life in the NFL on the practice fields.

  193.
Beyond Maye, New England has six other rookies on the offensive side of the ball. Many of them, including wide receivers Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker, will have the chance to make an immediate impact in helping the offense get back on track.

  194.
Jerod Mayo

  195.
For the first time in over two decades a new head coach will be twirling the whistle on the back practice fields. Mayo shared during rookie minicamp that he has enjoyed bouncing around to all three units, something he is comfortable doing due to his larger staff. Brissett shared that he has enjoyed Mayo’s way of doing things so far.

  196.
“He brings a lot of good energy,” he said. “The cool thing is you can tell he’s trying to make the players on the team run the team. Obviously, he’s the head coach and he sets the standard, but he definitely puts a lot of responsibility on us players. I like it.”

  197.
And while Mayo and defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington’s defense is expected to remain largely the same, they have stressed a more aggressive unit this season.

  198.
Alex Van Pelt’s offense

  199.
Something that won’t be unfamiliar on the practice fields is a new offensive installation, as the Patriots are set to have their third offensive coordinator in three years. This year, it will be Alex Van Pelt running the show.

  200.
Throughout his past tenures in Cleveland and Green Bay, Van Pelt’s offenses have majored in wide zone run schemes paired with bootleg action. Speaking with Rhamondre Stevenson and several New England offensive lineman this offseason, a similar system is now being installed at One Patriot Place.

  201.
This will also mark Van Pelt’s first extensive experience as the play-caller himself, as head coach Kevin Stefanski handled such duties in Cleveland.

  202.
Offensive line watch

  203.
As mentioned above, jobs are not won during the spring — that competition begins in the summer during training camp. But, OTA’s can provide a glimpse behind the curtain at the current pecking order at certain positions.

  204.
One of the main spots to watch will be at offensive tackle. Michael Onwenu is set to open the year at right tackle, but the blindside opposite of him is currently up for grabs. Rookie Caedan Wallace expectedly began at left tackle during rookie minicamp, while veteran Chuks Okorafor will be involved as well.

  205.
Who lines up to their right will also be worth watching, as Cole Strange’s season-ending knee injury has limited him so far this offseason. New England used a fourth-round pick on guard Layden Robinson, who aligned at left guard during rookie minicamp. Robinson will now join free agent addition Nick Leverett and second-year players Atonio Mafi and Jake Andrews as interior options.

  206.
Cornerback depth

  207.

  209. Photo by Timothy T Ludwig/Getty Images
  210.

  211.
Switching to the defense, New England has plenty of possibilities with how they can deploy their cornerback room this season. Christian Gonzalez will be locked into the top spot if healthy, but the alignment across from the first-round pick is anyone’s guess.

  212.
A healthy Marcus Jones could take over slot duties and leave Jonathan Jones remaining along the outside, or an intriguing group of young boundary corners (Alex Austin, Isaiah Bolden, Marco Wilson, Marcellas Dial) could result in the veteran Jones playing inside. Shaun Wade also remains a possibility, especially after impressing last summer in the slot.

  213.
One or two of the young players in this group separating themselves from the pack would be a big boost for New England’s defense.

  214.
Standout player

  215.
OTA practices often can produce an unlikely standout, with the lack of contact usually bringing a skill position player to the forefront. It’s important to take these performances with a grain of salt, however, as Tre Nixon earned OTA MVP honors in 2022 before Tyquan Thornton had a highly impressive first practice last year.

  216.
On the flip side, sixth-round rookie wide receiver DeMario Douglas’ movement abilities were apparent the second he stepped on the field last season.

  217.
Attendance

  218.
While minicamp (June 10-12) is mandatory for players, OTA’s still fall under the voluntary part of the offseason program. Attendance has been strong for the Patriots so far this offseason, but they’re usually are a handful of players who miss some, or all, of OTA’s. A group also usually spends most of the day on the lower practice fields.

  219.
Perhaps the biggest player to watch in the upcoming weeks is pass rusher Matthew Judon. The 31-year old is coming off a season-ending biceps injury and is scheduled to earn a base salary of $6.5 million in the final year of his contract. It’s tough to see Judon, who saw his contract adjusted last offseason after an unofficial hold-in, play under the current contract structure.

  220.
Additionally, Kendrick Bourne and Strange’s involvement coming off season-ending knee injuries are two others worth monitoring, while Christian Gonzalez (shoulder) also would not confirm if he was 100 percent cleared for OTA’s earlier this month.

  240.
Notes and thoughts on the Patriots and the NFL on May 19.

With the NFL Draft in the rearview mirror and the 2024 schedule released, the NFL calendar is quieting down. For the New England Patriots, however, the fun is just beginning as the team begins organized team activities on Monday.

  241.
Before all the attention turns to the practice fields, let’s clean out the notebook with our Sunday Patriots Notes.

  242.
1. Leader of the pack: The New England Patriots made it clear this offseason that their search for a new franchise quarterback had more to do with just on field abilities.

  243.
So, it was no surprise that Drake Maye, who was spoken extremely high of from his college coaches and teammates, was the team’s selection at No. 3 in the NFL Draft.

  244.
Through Maye’s early days in Foxboro, those leadership abilities were quickly on display to his new teammates and coaches during the team’s rookie minicamp last weekend.

  245.
“He’s always communicating with people,” fourth-round guard Layden Robinson said. “He always wants to make sure he goes and greets you. He just has a nice smile on his face, like, ‘Hey man, let’s get after it today. I’m having a great day. How about you?’

  246.
“Just having that leadership around and having that energy, you always have to bring your best energy, as well.”

  247.
Maye’s work upon arrival began off the field, as Jerod Mayo shared the 21-year-old was at the facility “all night” on New England’s first day of minicamp Friday. After Saturday’s practice session then concluded shortly after noon ET, Maye shared his work day was just beginning as he continues to get on the same page as his new teammates.

  248.
“Quarterback, you got to know what everybody is doing on the field on offense. You got to know all 11, not just my job,” Maye said. “It takes extra time, extra drawing up, extra questions. I’m just trying to get to know it myself, but also get to know the other guys around me. Get them with me. Staying later, getting here early.

  249.
“We’ll be here until 7, 8, 9 o’clock. That the best thing about minicamp is getting around the guys for the first time. We are at the hotel together, right across rooms. Watching film, looking at the script for the next day together. Have a lot of time. We have nothing else to do up here, so why not do football?”

  250.
As the work then transitioned between the white lines, so did Maye’s dynamic energy and leadership.

  251.
“The guy can sling it, man,” second-round wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk shared. “He’s very confident. He’s a leader, very vocal and just trying to find ways to put this team in the best opportunity possible. … He’s setting the tone in practice, trying to get guys moving around and operating at a high level.”

  252.
“I just love his energy and intensity when he’s in the huddle,” Robinson added.

  253.
With rookie minicamp now in the rearview mirror, Maye and the rest of the Patriots’ rookies have gotten to work with the veterans. Up next for the QB is his first organized team activity on May 20, where he’ll get the chance to continue to impress and build relationships with his new teammates

  254.
“Look, he has a lot to work on,” Mayo said of Maye. “A lot to work on. But I have no doubt that he will put the time in.”

  255.
2. QB-WR connection: Part of taking on a leadership role for Maye includes getting to know his fellow rookies off the field — specifically his new pass catchers. Through their early days in New England, Maye has been close with second-round wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk, as the two even attended last Sunday’s Boston Bruins game together.

  256.

  260.
  261.
  262.

  263.
Maye and Polk, along with quarterback Joe Milton, also have spent the past few days out in Los Angeles together during the NFLPA’s annual rookie premiere.

  264.
3. Receiver’s relationship: Beyond connecting with his new QB, Polk has continued to develop his relationship with fellow rookie wide receiver Javon Baker. The two had previously been training together prior to being drafted by New England, and are now developing a routine together in Foxboro.

  265.
“Me and Javon, after we finish everything, we’ll get our food and before we head to the hotel… we’ll go in there, catch jugs, one of the equipment guys will go in there with us,” Polk shared. “We try to find our routine and our schedule to be the best we can be. Be able to lead the guys in the room and us to feed off the vets and be able to pick their brains and the things they do. It’s exciting to be part of something like this.”

  266.
4. To the left: New England had a clear plan for offensive tackle Caedan Wallace after selecting him in the third-round of this year’s draft. That consisted of moving him from right to left tackle, where he aligned from the start at rookie minicamp last weekend.

  267.
“I don’t find it all too hard to switch over,” Wallace explained after Saturday’s practice. “Just flipping things in my minds — hand placement, certain kicks, angles, things like that.

  268.
“[Footwork] is not really a challenge. I played a lot of left in college practices. I pretty much played all left in high school. Being able to work that throughout the years and then come out here, it’s been sort of an easier transition. Not completely easy, but it’s been a little easier for me.”

  269.
5. Inside info: Kickoffs will look different in the NFL this year, as the league has adapted a format once used by the XFL to increase returns while cutting down injuries. While players now adjust to the new rules, Patriots specialist Brenden Schooler received some first-hand tips and tricks from his brother Colin, who led the XFL in special teams tackles last season.

  270.
“We’re still getting to know all the rules and seeing how it’s going to look for us, because everybody’s in the same boat, at least at this level, where this is the first time for everybody,” Schooler said. “So we’re all just trying to figure that out and make sure we’re coming up with like the best games to get you guys free and, just see how it works on paper first before you go further.”

  271.
“He just said it’s like a you’re in a phone booth,” Schooler added. “If you’re good with hand-to-feets, winning your one-on-one battle, you’ll be alright. So, that’s what I’m trying to have my mindset as.”

  272.
6. Springer’s energy: Helping Schooler adjust to those new rules will be new special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer, who also coached Schooler’s brother in college while having a very brief overlap when Brenden during his short stint at Arizona in 2019. Now working together again, Schooler has enjoyed the experience.

  273.
“[Springer’s] got high energy whatever day it is. He comes in the building every day and it’s gonna be the same thing and that’s all you can ask for as a player to have in a coach is to be consistent, have high energy, coach us as hard as you can,” Schooler said. “But he’s awesome. I think it’s great energy for the building.”

  274.
7. Rest up: From a Week 14 bye week to traveling the fourth-most miles among any team to having one of the consensus hardest schedules based on opponents, the Patriots did not get many favors with their 2024 schedule.

  275.
One silver lining, however, is that the team will benefit from plenty of extra rest days compared to their opponents this season.

  276.

  277.

  278.
BAL and NE benefitting from rest days vs opponents. BAL has a number of Thursdays and a Wednesday. pic.twitter.com/YrOSftieDa
— Brian Burke (@bburkeESPN) May 16, 2024

  281.
  282.

  283.
8. Slater’s role: “Slate is on the staff and I am happy about that,” Mayo explained. “He is an advisor for me on all things football, and honestly, the things off the field. He is a very smart individual and I would say we see most things the same way. And at the same time, I know he is a guy that will be honest with me. Once you put the head coach hat on, it is hard to find people that are honest with you.”

  284.
Schooler added: “I think he’s more of just kind of in a spectator role right now. He’s not running any drills or doing anything like that.”

  285.
9. Staple in the Patriot Way: When veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett returned to New England this offseason, just four faces were familiar from his first stint with the team: David Andrews, Jonathan Jones, Deatrich Wise Jr., and Joe Cardona.

  286.
While Brissett has become known for his leadership abilities during his time elsewhere, one of his original teammates, David Andrews (who signed a contract extension with the team Thursday), experienced similar growth in New England.

  287.
“When I was here he was a second-year player and know he’s a staple in the Patriot Way. When I think about the culture, he is that,” Brissett said Thursday. “He’s a worker and a guy that’s fought throughout his career to get to where he is now. I think a lot of players on our team can look up to him, not just guys on the [offensive line].”

  288.
10. Setting up the week ahead: Phase 3 of the offseason program starts on Monday, which brings the start of OTA’s. Teams can hold 10 total OTA’s over a three week period (maximum of three per week over the first two weeks) where 7 on 7, 9 on 7 and 11 on 11 drills can take place with no live contact.

  289.
New England’s first OTA on Monday will be open to the media.

  309.
Our offseason countdown continues with the fifth-worst Patriots moment of 2023.

I’m usually all about Top 5 lists of anything.

  310.
However, for some ridiculous reason, I thought it would be a good idea to relive some of the worst New England Patriots moments of 2023. I honestly don’t know what I was thinking. It really did seem like it would be fun, and maybe even therapeutic, back in February. Now here I find myself, staring down the barrel of the absolute travesties of Patriots football, and forced to write about them all as we all ease into summer. I must have been suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder or something.

  311.
But I’m in it, and I’m going to finish it And if you’re still with me, I appreciate the company.

  312.
The list so far:

  313.
10. Marcus Jones, Christian Gonzalez, and Matthew Judon are all lost for the season by Week 4.
9. Jakobi Meyers out, Juju Smith-Schuster in.
8. Bailey Zappe closes out the Colts game with an unfathomable pick into triple coverage.
7. Chad Ryland shanks a 35-yard field goal to lose the game against the New York Giants.
6. A Mac Jones safety ends any hope of a comeback against the Las Vegas Raiders.

  314.
At Number 5, we have a massive letdown after a rare buildup.

  315.
5. A four-turnover first half ends any hope of a Bills sweep.

  316.
Patriots vs. Bills at the end of the season was, for a very long time, a throwaway game; Buffalo was usually long out of playoff contention, and New England had often solidified their playoff seeding by then and were either resting starters or doing some last-minute tweaking as they turned an eye towards the postseason.

  317.
Well in 2023, all that was completely out the window, as the Bills were looking to halt a late-season skid and secure a playoff spot and the Patriots...well, I don’t know what the Patriots were by then. The team had actually been experiencing a mini-revival all throughout the month of December; they beat the Steelers in Pittsburgh, hung tough with the Chiefs, and somehow managed to take out the Broncos in Denver. They were well out of playoff contention, but the role of spoiler was theirs for the taking when New Year’s Eve saw Buffalo travel to Foxborough to try and avoid the sweep.

  318.
But spoiler the Patriots were most certainly not, as the Bills were able to pull out a 27-21 victory that they, to New England’s credit, needed every second of game clock to achieve. After a Jalen Reagor 98 yard kick return touchdown to open up the game, the Pats had the Bills back on their heels, especially after holding Buffalo to a three and out on their first possession that only netted four yards.

  319.
Unfortunately, that little exchange represented the pinnacle of first-half dominance, as Bill Belichick made an absolutely egregious coaching error:

  320.
He sent the offense out onto the field.

  321.
New England’s very first offensive play, a Zappe to Gesicki short slant, was picked off by Ed Oliver off a deflection. Bills ball at the NE 18.

  322.
But the D once again did their job, held the Bills to only four yards, and they had to settle for a field goal. Patriots 7, Bills 3.

  323.
Did Belichick learn from his prior mistake? No. He sent the offense out onto the field again. They went three and out in less than two minutes.

  324.
Good news, Bill! The defense held again! Another Bills punt! Don’t -

  325.
Oh. Here comes the offense again.

  326.
Zappe’s first pass on this drive was intercepted by Rasul Douglas. 1st and 10 at the NE 14. Four plays later, Josh Allen rumbled past a gassed defense to put Buffalo up 10-7.

  327.
New England’s next offensive possession: two plays, five yards. A short pass to Pharaoh Brown on 2nd and 10 resulted in a fumble, recovered by the Bills. 1st and 10 Buffalo at the New England 30. Somehow, The D managed to hold the Bills to a field goal there as well to keep the game technically in reach.

  328.
New England’s next offensive possession? Three plays, negative seven yards. Their next one after that? A six-play, 29-yard drive that ended in a touchdown when Rasul Douglas jumped Reagor’s route and returned the interception 40 yards for the Bills score. Buffalo 20, Patriots 7.

  329.
That this game wasn’t 42-7 halfway through the second quarter is a testament to the defense and the defense alone. The Patriots had 10 - that’s right, 10 - first-half possessions, they only punted twice, and they went into the locker room with two TDs on the board with one of them coming from the opening kickoff. They turned the ball over deep in their own territory four times. They missed a field goal. They inexplicably put together a masterful six-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 17-yard Zappe TD scramble. And in one of their best drives of the half, they knelt on it twice to close out the quarter.

  330.
In a year of offensive ineptitude, the first half of this Bills game might be the offensive ineptitudiest. So little went right, and so much went wrong, for this offense during this game that there were multiple times I debated just turning off the TV altogether. I didn’t because I’m a masochist and the defense was playing well, but I won’t fault those who had better things to do with the last day of 2023 than watch.

  331.
What made it especially lousy was that there was some reason to be hopeful for this team based on how they had been playing as of late. The season was already long gone by that point, but some strong play and a few nice wins allowed us all to start building some optimism for the offseason and beyond. A lot of that came crashing down with this first half of the Bills game. And while it worked out from a draft picks perspective, it was for sure an end-of-year kick right to the junk, so here it is kicking off our <s>Bottom</s> Top 5.

  332.
Game highlights here.

  354.
The latest edition of our Patriots mailbag answers questions about running backs, rookie impacts, and more.

The New England Patriots offseason rolls on at Phase 3 of the program begins on Monday. That brings the start of OTAs, where teams can begin 7 on 7, 9 on 7 and 11 on 11 drills with no live contact.

  355.
So, before we see New England’s rookie and veterans on the field together for the first time, let’s get into this week’s #PostPulpit mailbag.

  356.
Do you see Antonio Gibson playing a meaningful role as a third-down back this season? If Stevenson goes down with an injury, could Gibson successfully carry the load as the main back? Will the Pats dive into free agency for another RB? - rod1776

  357.
Is anyone else worried about the lack of RB depth? - ParaMeds

  358.
I wouldn't necessarily pigeonhole Gibson into a third-down back role. He has the speed and skillset to make him a strong fit in Alex Van Pelt’s wide zone scheme and could work into series-by-series type of rotation with Rhamondre Stevenson — similarly to the Stevenson - Ezekiel Elliot pairing last season.

  359.
As for the depth, I would like to see a third NFL caliber back behind the top two — especially in an offense that prioritizes running the ball. They don't have that on the roster as of now, but perhaps Kevin Harris or one of the UDFAs (De’Shaun Fenwick or Terrell Jennings) proves worthy of the role over the summer.

  360.
If not, they can always take the Elliot path and sign a veteran late in free agency. The staff worked with Kareem Hunt in Cleveland (although off field issues likely removes him from consideration) while Matt Breida could be an intriguing scheme fit with his speed.

  361.

  362.
Two questions on OL, which I believe will make or break the offense this year. Why no talk of Calvin Anderson as the LT? He was sick all last year and has pro experience at the position as opposed to the other options. Why another guard drafted in round 4? We took 3 interior OL players last year and even if Cole Strange isn’t ready for the start of the season, were the picks that bad that another guard took priority? - Rsully22

  363.
The main thing Anderson has working for him is his left tackle experience. Caeden Wallace has not played the position in a game since high school. Chuks Okorafor has not played left tackle since college. While things did not go great for Anderson last season while he was battling/fighting back from a serious illness, he did have intriguing tape in Denver before signing here.

  364.
Either way, I think Wallace and Okorafor’s ceiling may still be higher at the position leaving Anderson as a top swing/fourth tackle.

  365.
As for the guards, there are still plenty of questions around Cole Strange’s health and availability before even getting to his on field play. With Layden Robinson taking the left guard snaps at rookie minicamp, the stage is set for a training camp battle at that spot.

  366.

  367.
What rookie(s) do you see having an immediate impact on the team? - LandenPatz1

  368.
While I'm not ruling Drake Maye starting Week 1 out after a strong offseason, I'll go Ja’Lynn Polk here.

  369.
New England needs better play at the receiver position and Polk should quickly see a large role upon arrival, specifically due to his blocking ability which plays a big role in Van Pelt’s offense.

  370.

  371.

  372.
Ja'Lynn "No block, No rock" Polk. First drive of the game. pic.twitter.com/gadkylILfz
— Brian Hines (@iambrianhines) April 29, 2024
  373.

  374.
  375.
  376.

  377.
Once on the field, Polk should then be a reliable target for any quarterback under center with is ability to win downfield and haul in contested catches. He just is a good football player that I have a hard time not seeing contributing.

  378.

  379.
What will the Patriots do about Juju,Thornton, and Boutte or will they get a 2nd chance under the new coaches? - For Pats Sake

  380.
As Tyquan Thornton said Thursday, it’s a fresh start. But, roster spots are limited in a receivers room that currently holds 11 players.

  381.
The assumption is Ja’Lynn Polk, Javon Baker, DeMario Douglas and Kendrick Bourne (if healthy) are 53-man roster locks. K.J. Osborn likely will be included that group but won't be considered a lock on a one-year deal. That likely leaves one spot open for JuJu Smith-Schuster, Thornton, Kayshon Boutte and Jalen Reagor.

  382.
Where things stand now, Reagor may have the upper hand with his special teams ability. But, we have a whole training camp and preseason for each player to make their case.

  383.

  384.
Do you feel confident in the direction this team is headed with the emphasis on retaining our young building blocks? If not, who/what would you be targeting if you were running the show? - LandenPatz1

  385.
Frankly, yes. They’ve done a strong job retaining their own talented players and hit on their major needs in a draft class that projects well. They also maintained their salary cap flexibility moving forward.

  386.
Lots of how the futures projects will revolve around Drake Maye, but if the rookie looks good this season (which I'm confident he will) then the team can get aggressive with upgrades over the next several offseasons. They’ve built a strong core to be excited about moving forward.

  387.

  388.
With the recent murmurings of wanting to expand to 18 games and the continual growing of the salary cap...is there ever a discussion about expanding rosters? - PatsHowYouDoIt

  389.
It’s an interesting thought with the discussion of eliminating the preseason and expanding the regular season. However, the players focus seems to be on adding a second bye week over expanding roster sizes.

  390.
“If you’re going to talk about 18 games, there needs to be two bye weeks. Because 17 is a lot already, with one bye week,” Davon Godchaux said last week. “It can be done, as long as guys are professionals and take care of their bodies.”

  391.

  392.
You’re stranded on a desert island with the entire Patriots team. No one has a phone or any communication device. There is a rescue plane in the distance but it’s got hundreds of miles of ocean and islands to investigate and may overlook the tiny island you’re stranded on.

  393.
80 yards offshore there is a raft that is primed so that if it is hit by a football it will send up a number of flares. You’ve only got two footballs. Which quarterback do you choose to throw those two balls? - BirdStealsTheBall

  394.
While Drake Maye’s arm is legit, it’s tough to pass on Joe Milton’s rocket arm here — especially if we need to cut through the island breeze.

  395.
Real answer though if the entire team is present: we’re letting Bryce Baringer punt it.

  396.
That’s all for this week’s #PostPulpit mailbag. If you have questions you’d liked to be answered next week, submit them online in our weekly submission post or on Twitter using #PostPulpit.
