49. The first meeting of the convention took place in March 1989, attended by MPs, councillors, clergy, trade unionists, businessmen and academics. Reports noted that by 3pm, the gathering had dwindled as “trade in the nearby pubs picked up”.
 50.

 51.

 52. Chair Canon Kenyon Wright, a long-time campaigner for devolution, had the difficult task of trying to find consensus among the disparate groups.

 56.

 57.

 58. His rallying cry of “We say yes and we are the people” to address the expectation that Margaret Thatcher would veto any proposals for Scottish devolution has gone down in history.
 59.

 60.

 61. However reports of the first meeting highlighted how it was difficult for the media to find any sign of disputes, with the occasion described as “ominously constructive”.
 62.

 63.

 65.

 66.

 67. Writing in The Glasgow Herald, Murray Ritchie said: “While the gathering applauded a succession of speakers with spontaneous and heartfelt goodwill, the massed ranks of the media, ever alert for a fresh angle, looked for splits, demos, interlopers, trouble. They were having a disappointing time.”
 68.

 69.

 70. He also noted the presence of a “scruffy mob outside, some wearing Rangers scarves, waved a Union flag and shouted abuse”.
 71.

 72.

 73. He added: “They were, apparently, some new breed of young Conservative, certainly not the type to endear themselves to the twinset and pearls crowd. But their demo fizzled.”

 78.

 79. The Tories were not the only party that did not take part in the convention.
 80.

 81.

 82. Ahead of the first gathering, a meeting of the SNP’s national council voted not to take part by 191 votes to 41, with a debate hearing concerns the convention would not succeed and was a Labour “trap”
 83.

 84.

 85. to lure the party into campaigning for devolution.
 86.

 87.

 88. Then vice-president Jim Sillars said: “We have to decide whether we are part of a marshmallow set of Scottish society that looks good until you squeeze it and find nothing.

 92.

 93.

 94. “We are going to take our country to independence in Europe on the basis of hard-rock principle.’’ Not everyone agreed, however, with national executive “dissident” Isobel Lindsay arguing refusing to take part would be out of step with the opinion of Scottish people.
 95.

 96.

 97. She said: “That convention will meet on March 30 and make a ringing declaration asserting the sovereign rights of the Scottish people.
 98.

 99.

 100. “Are we going to push that national drive forward or are we going to be out there standing shoulder to shoulder with the Tory Party and the CBI?’’ By October of 1989, the Scottish Constitutional Convention published 250,000 copies of a consultation leaflet seeking the views of Scottish people on three possible types of parliament for Scotland – including an elected parliament in an independent Scotland.
 101.

 102.

 103. The convention laid the groundwork for Labour’s inclusion of a policy for devolution in its 1997 election manifesto.
 104.

 105.

 106. A referendum on the creation of a Scottish Parliament was held the same year and the first meeting of the institution in its modern form took place in 1999.

 198.

 199.

 200. Did you know that you can drink in a bar that has been built from a former underground toilet?
 201.

 202.

 203. Located in Bermondsey, this 30s art deco style bar still retains a lot of the original tiles and features it would have done when it was used as a public toilet.
 204.

 205.

 206. But the toilets themselves have long since been removed, and replaced with an upmarket bar serving wines, spirits, and craft cocktails.
 207.

 208.

 209. The bar also offers live jazz music and is open Tuesdays – Sundays from 6pm – 2am.

 446. I say, look no further than Wicked at The Apollo Victoria Theatre.

 448.

 449. For anyone who might not know, Wicked is a musical spin-off of The Wizard of Oz and follows the story of Glinda the good witch and Elphaba, the wicked witch of the west, before Dorothy’s house even landed.
 450.

 451.

 452. While Wicked is based on a book written over 100 years ago, it’s a tale as old as time of good vs evil.
 453.

 454.

 455. The story follows the pair as they meet at “uni” and grow up as frenemies, getting involved with magic, parties and romance – a normal day in the life at Shiz, the Ozian school.
 456.

 457.

 459.

 460.

 461. Elphaba has been sent to the school to protect her sister, Nessa, who is paralysed from the waist down, but quickly reveals her powers of sorcery that turn out to make her a one-in-a-million student.
 462.

 463.

 464. However, Elphaba’s parade is well and truly rained on by the cruel comments from the other students since she was born – you guessed it – green.
 465.

 466.

 467. A factor made worse when she is made to share a room with her pretty, “popular”, blonde roommate – Glinda.

 472.

 473. However, as the two young witches come across some dark discoveries, they are forced to choose their paths in life.
 474.

 475.

 476. The Apollo Victoria Theatre fits the Wicked theme with each corner and crevice decked out with green décor and lighting.
 477.

 478.

 479. When you reach your seat before the show even starts, the curtain is glowing with a map of Oz, transporting you into the show before it even begins.
 480.

 481.

 482. The enormous dragon looming over the theatre though is a reminder that there’s darkness lurking, even in the colourful world of Oz.
 483.

 484.

 485. The curtain lifts and you are hit by a wall of music and a cluster of citizens of Oz decked out in extravagant, futuristic costumes fill the stage.
 486.

 487.

 488. Wicked: An astounding show for all ages (Image: Matt Crockett)
 489.

 490.

 491. Wicked is a show that will have you laughing and crying in the space of five minutes, completely forgetting that you’re sat in a theatre in Victoria and not in the fantastical land of Oz.
 492.

 493.

 494. The chemistry between the performers playing Glinda and Elphaba was amazing as the two were truly believable as frenemies who love one another while bickering constantly.
 495.

 496.

 497. Wicked is brimming with toe-tapping, catchy musical numbers that you will be humming to yourself for days on end.
 498.

 499.

 500. The ensemble of incredible performers’ dancing was jaw-dropping as they twirled and contorted themselves – not to mention the flying monkeys soaring and leaping across the stage.
 501.

 502.

 503. There are a few scarier moments in Wicked, for example, as the audience is taken to the Emerald City and meet the almighty Wizard of Oz, that might not be suitable for really small children.
 504.

 505.

 506. Wicked: An astounding show for all ages (Image: Mark Senior)

 508.

 509. But, the show does have an age restriction in place, not permitting little ones under five into the theatre to account for these moments.
 510.

 511.

 512. For children over five though, those moments are sure to be exhilarating and captivating, transporting them out of their seats.
 513.

 514.

 515. While Wicked is a brilliant family-friendly show, I have to admit that even as a grown adult, I couldn’t keep my eyes off of the stage for the entirety of the show.
 516.

 517.

 518. The story is engaging with so many intricate details and hilarious lines; the dance numbers are astounding and the music is breath-taking.

 521. Alexia Khadime playing Elphaba and Lucy St. Louis playing Glinda (Image: Matt Crockett)

 523.

 524. At the core of Wicked though, is the message of looking beyond what is on the surface level as Elphaba may be green, but she’s still a force to be reckoned with.
 525.

 526.

 527. I think that it’s an important message for kids and adults alike which is nestled amongst the extravagance of the Emerald City.
 528.

 529.

 530. I would recommend this show to anyone and everyone – it’s a real treat that no one should overlook when visiting London.

 608.
It’s called HyNet and it’s a group of around 40 carbon-intensive industries like glass and cement, even breakfast cereals, crisps and proposed new green hydrogen production, brought together as a Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) cluster.

 609.
This area of the North West is an industrial powerhouse but that means it’s a hotspot for emissions. In overview, the plan is to capture the CO2 from the various chimneys, before it’s piped to empty old gas wells.

 619.
These are all industries which allow us to live our life every day today, so this region’s got the biggest concentrations of industrial emissions. We’ve also got really important geology for being able to store carbon emissions deep under the sea.

 620.
One company saddling up for the challenge is waste and recycling company Viridor, which runs a big rubbish incinerator that makes electricity. Their proposed new carbon capture facility will have specially built chimneys which force the gasses to flow through an amine solvent to separate the CO2.

 621.
Click to subscribe to ClimateCast wherever you get your podcasts

 622.
That amine is heated to release the pure CO2 before it joins a pipe network from other industries to be pumped into depleted gas wells in Liverpool Bay. It will be very big and expensive but James Eyton, Viridor’s head of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage Developments, commits to have it up and running by the mid-2020s.

 623.
“The reason I got into engineering was to make a positive difference to the world, to help solve climate change. We are talking about spending about half a billion pounds on a new site about the same size again as the energy recovery facility itself. It’s massive. It’s a huge challenge. It will take a lot of people working very hard together to make it happen.”

 624.
It will be energy hungry too: the CCS plant will demand about one-third of the energy produced by burning the waste in the first place. Effective CCS across the world would be a massive business, comparable to the oil and gas industry itself.

 634.
This epic size and cost is one reason why CCS hasn’t yet happened at scale despite being talked about by polluting companies for decades.

 635.
Many observers believe polluters have been using the prospect of CCS to avoid taking the hard choice of moving away from dirty fuels. But it’s now central to the government’s legally binding commitment to reach net zero by 2050 and they’ve committed £20bn for the technology over the next two years.

 636.
‘We’re in a net zero world’

 637.
HyNet’s progressive director, David Parkin, says that in Britain, CCS is about to be real.

 638.
“It will definitely happen this time. The legislative backdrop has changed. We’re in a net zero world,” he said.

 639.
“The government’s really serious and, although we had some delays last year because of political instability, we’re right back on track – and after a really good announcement with the spring statement from the chancellor, this project will move forward.”

 647.
A little further west, across into Wales, lies the Padeswood Works cement plant. Globally, cement manufacturing accounts for around 5% of global warming. It’s not just the massive heat required but the actual chemical reaction to make calcium oxide that emits CO2.

 648.
Here too they are promising hundreds of millions of investments to capture hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO2, but when I ask Hanson UK’s sustainability manager, Marian Garfield, if the works will be climate-friendly, she said: “I will be happy to invite you back in 2027-28 when our carbon capture facility will be operating and we’ll be capturing 100% of our emissions.”

 649.
If, in a decade or two, CCS becomes widespread, a huge bill will be paid by us. It will make goods produced by burning stuff more expensive.

 659.
While hard to swallow for consumers or governments, that high price will be the real cost of cleaning up fossil fuels (which are still responsible for around three-quarters of our total energy demand).

 704.
A ‘sadistic’ sexual predator nicknamed the ‘Honey Monster’ by colleagues has been jailed for life for the murder of an escort – exactly 30 years after he was cleared of the killing.

 705.
David Smith, 67, was acquitted of the 1991 murder of Sarah Crump, 33, at a trial in 1993.

 706.
The lorry driver went on to commit an almost identical murder of another sex worker, 21-year-old Amanda Walker, for which he was convicted in 1999 and has now served 24 years of a life sentence.

 707.
After being convicted of Ms Walker’s murder, Ms Crump’s mother, Pat Rhodes, warned: “I said at the trial he would kill again.

 708.
“I truly believe Smith to be guilty of the murder of my daughter, Sarah.

 709.
While on remand awaiting trial for Ms Walker’s murder, Smith boasted to an inmate that he had “got away with it”.

 710.
Court of Appeal judges ordered Smith should be retried for Ms Crump’s murder after “new and compelling evidence” emerged.

 711.
He was retried after the centuries-old double jeopardy rule – which meant a defendant, once acquitted, could not be tried for the same crime – was scrapped.

 712.
Read more:
Mother and father who murdered 10-month-old baby on Christmas Day 2020 jailed
Carer who climbed into teenage girl’s bed ‘was sleepwalking’

 713.
The law change in 2005 has allowed prosecutors and police to bring offenders to justice if there is new and compelling evidence against them.

 714.
Smith – known to colleagues as “The Honey Monster” or “Lurch” due to his heavy build and 6ft 3in height – denied murder but was this week convicted by jurors at Inner London Crown Court.

 715.
On Friday, he was sentenced to life with a minimum 27 years behind bars – less the 479 days he spent on remand in the 1990s – meaning he will serve at least 25 years and 251 days in prison.

 716.
Smith previously raped a young mother at knifepoint in 1976 and falsely imprisoned another woman in a car around 10 years later, jurors heard.

 717.
He regularly played card games with Harold Shipman while serving time at HMP Wakefield, the 2005 inquest of the serial killer GP heard.

 728.
Passing sentence for Ms Crump’s murder on Friday, the judge, Mr Justice Bryan, said the “abhorrent murder” was both “sexual and sadistic in nature”.

 729.
“I have no doubt your pre-meditated and planned intention that night… was to kill and sexually mutilate an escort to satisfy your perverted and sadistic sexual desires,” he said.

 730.
Smith, branded a “habitual and dishonest liar”, had a “history of escalating sexual violence against women” since he was a teenager in the 1970s, the judge said.

 733.
The killing of Ms Crump was part of a “pattern of violence and sexual offending against, but not limited to, sex workers.”

 734.
Ms Crump’s family, including her two sisters, Joanne Platt and Suzanne Wright, together with Detective Inspector Jill McTigue, who led the initial murder investigation, were present in court for the hearing.

 735.
Mr Justice Bryan said he hoped the the sentence would give them “some closure”, telling Smith they would be “safe in the knowledge you have been brought to justice and are likely to spend the rest of your life in prison.”

 753.
“This was always so very important to pursue, to finally see justice for Sarah.

 754.
“We would like to remember Sarah for who she was to us – the sister with the most amazing smile, a funny, thoughtful aunt and the daughter who was one of the best three girls in the world.”

 755.
“No remorse whatsoever”

 756.
Wearing dark glasses with his head bowed, Smith showed no emotion as the sentence was passed.

 757.
Mitigating factors for Smith were “thin gruel indeed”, the judge said, adding: “You have shown no remorse whatsoever.”

 758.
Ms Crump led a double life, employed as a secretary in the chiropody department at Wimbledon Hospital in south west London while also working as an escort.

 765.
Smith, who at the time was living with his parents in Hampton, south west London, visited his victim at her one-bedroom flat in Southall, west London, before murdering her and mutilating her body in the early hours of 29 August, 1991.

 806.

 807. It is seeking sponsors to support the charity with up to £300,000 to enable them to upgrade to more efficient, greener vehicles that won’t elicit fines for entering the LEZ.
 808.

 809.

 810. The charity is open to reciprocal support in return for donations, such as carrying corporate branding across its vehicles.

 813. St Andrew’s First Aid currently operates eight first aid vans, which are fitted with beds and life-saving first aid equipment. 816. Stuart Callison, chief executive of St Andrew’s First Aid, said: “The new low emission zone is a landmark change that will help to improve the health of everyone in the city centre – and we fully support its introduction. However, charities everywhere have been met with rising costs and economic challenges, and we are no exception.
