The crime action franchise, “The Roundup: Punishment,” has quickly surpassed 4 million viewers within just five days of its release.Despite its success, there are growing concerns within the film industry about the overwhelming allocation of screens and seats to this film, potentially squeezing other films out of theaters.An official at another film production company currently being shown expressed frustration, saying, “No matter how well a film is made, it’s challenging to succeed at the box office if theaters don’t provide enough screens.”According to the Korea Film Council’s data from April 28, “The Roundup: Punishment” surpassed 4 million viewers, with an estimated total attendance of around 4.4 million since its release on April 24. The film is averaging about 900,000 viewers per day.The break-even point for the fourth installment of “The Roundup” crime action series is approximately 3.3 million viewers.On April 27, the film set a new record for the highest daily attendance for the series, with 1.22 million viewers, surpassing the previous record held by “The Roundup 3” (2023), which attracted 1.16 million moviegoers. These figures indicate a stronger box office performance compared to its predecessors. The fourth installment continues the story of Detective Ma Seok-do (played by Ma Dong-seok), who is relentless in his pursuit of bad guys.
The dominance in theaters of Ma’s latest film is reflected in other statistics. With K-pop’s worldwide acclaim, it’s easy to assume that Korean music is dominated entirely by idol pop groups.However, the six-member rock band Xdinary Heroes holds a different view. During a recent interview with The Korea Times, the members confidently said their goal is to elevate their chosen genre, “K-rock,” and introduce a variety of tastes to the Korean music scene.Having debuted in 2021, Xdinary Heroes is the second rock band under JYP Entertainment’s sublabel, Studio J, following in the footsteps of <a>DAY6</a>. The six-piece act — comprising drummer Gunil, keyboardists Jungsu and O.de, guitarists Gaon and Junhan, and bassist Jooyeon — covers a wide range of genres, including rock, metal, alternative and even pop-punk.Upon its initial ventures, skeptics doubted the group’s potential for success, considering its music was quite unfamiliar in a music market dominated by K-pop.Yet, remaining unfazed by external judgments, Xdinary Heroes’ commitment to cater to the niche taste gradually attracted a significant fan base.”We believe we’re a group that ventures into new territory more than any other K-pop group. While our music may lack the mass appeal like those of our senior group DAY6, we explore elements not commonly seen in the Korean music scene,” explained member Gaon at a cafe in Gwangjin District, eastern Seoul, April 23.
“Our members grew up immersed in overseas pop and rock music. So it appears that those who appreciate that culture are our primary fan base. Individuals who gravitate toward innovation and bold experimentation seem to resonate with our work,” Gaon added. Among the members, bassist Jooyeon recently earned a reputation for being “one of the top-tier vocalists among 4th-gen K-pop” after his live performance of the 2022 single “Strawberry Cake” went viral online.Expressing his feelings about the unexpected popularity, Jooyeon remarked, “I feel proud and honored to have such a good opportunity to represent the team. I feel a sense of duty to sing harder and strive for a cooler presence on stage.”The group’s yearning for an impressive stage delivery was realized during the recent concert series, “Xdinary Heroes Concert ‘Closed ♭eta: v6.0,'” held over three days from April 19 to 21. We approached it with a greater sense of responsibility. A highly decorated U.S. veteran of the 1950-53 Korean War lied in honor at the Capitol in Washington on Monday, as U.S. lawmakers, military officials and others gathered to pay tribute to the hero.Retired Col. Ralph Puckett Jr., the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the war, passed away at his home in Columbus, Georgia, at the age of 97 on April 8. He is noted for his command of the Eighth Army Ranger Company in a fierce fight to secure Hill 205, a strategically crucial point, against Chinese attacks in November 1950.His remains were placed in the rotunda of the Capitol during a ceremony where his bereaved family and other participants honored his gallantry and intrepidity shown during the Korean War, the first major armed conflict of the Cold War.
House Speaker Mike Johnson called attention to Puckett’s simple yet impactful motto: “Be there” when the going gets tough.”On that cold day in November 1950, Col. Puckett was there for his men and his country,” Johnson said in his address during the ceremony.”Today, America gets to show our things to the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from the Korean War. Samsung Electronics said Tuesday its operating profit shot up more than tenfold in the first quarter, with its chip business shifting to the black for the first time in five quarters.The world’s largest mobile phone and memory chip maker’s operating profit reached 6.6 trillion won ($4.8 billion) in operating profit for the January-March period, compared to 640.2 billion won a year ago, according o the company in a regulatory filing.Its sales jumped 12.8 percent to 71.9 trillion won and net profit soared 329 percent to 6.75 trillion won.The earnings beat market expectations. The average estimate of operating profit by analysts stood at 5.6 trillion won, according to a survey by Yonhap Infomax, the financial data firm of Yonhap News Agency.Samsung Electronics said it has invested 7.82 trillion won in research and development for the quarter ending March, marking the largest quarterly investment.Samsung Electronics said its chip business earned 23.1 trillion won in sales for the three-month period through March, with an operating profit of 1.91 trillion won.It is the first time that the company’s semiconductor segment has posted profit since the fourth quarter of 2022. It logged an operating loss of over 15 trillion won last year amid a downturn in the global chip market.Strong demand for memory chips lent support to the better-than-expected performance of the company’s chip business on rising DRAM and NAND flash prices, with steady sales of double data rate 5 (DDR5) products and massive solid state drives (SSDs).The company said it has pulled off the quarterly growth in the sector by a timely response to demand for high-value-added products, including high bandwidth memory, DDR5 and SSD servers, turning its memory business profitable.
In order to keep up with the booming demand for generative artificial intelligence, Samsung Electronics said it will start mass producing its latest 12-layer HBM3E products within the second quarter. Mass production of the 8-layer HBM3E started in April, the company added.Its foundry, or contract chip manufacturing, businesses saw its sales remain sluggish but operating losses narrow thanks to effective management.”The development of advanced 3 nanometer and 2 nanometer technologies is progressing smoothly, and 4nm technology yields have stabilized,” it said. “This improvement in advanced technology competitiveness helped the foundry business achieve its highest-ever order backlog in the first quarter.”The chipmaker said its foundry business is expected to post a double-digit on-quarter growth in the second quarter after bottoming out in the first quarter as customer inventory adjustments have been finalized and line utilization improved. Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) Chairman Lee Jae-myung urged President Yoon Suk Yeol to reconsider his approach to governing and state affairs, during their first-ever official meeting on Monday.Lee also called on the president to support the DPK’s nationwide subsidy program and refrain from using his veto power to reject policies proposed by the opposition.The DPK chief’s requests went unanswered by Yoon, leaving the main opposition disappointed by the president’s apparent resistance to change. The DPK leader described the long-awaited meeting as “frustrating and regretful.”The president and the DPK chairman engaged in a 135-minute conversation at Yoon’s office, addressing various issues, such as the importance of enhancing the grassroots economy and the government’s medical reform initiative.It was their first official meeting since Yoon assumed office in May 2022, after narrowly defeating his opposition rival in the presidential race.The meeting followed Yoon’s invitation to Lee to the presidential office after the ruling People Power Party (PPP) suffered a crushing defeat in the April 10 general elections. The order to start the vaccine-passage study was reportedly issued after a meeting of the Politburo on June 11.
Vietnam banned most inbound travel by foreigners in March last year until further notice as part of its measures against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Quarantine conditions will be eased separately for vaccinated people entering the country via Bandon Airport in Quang Ninh province from July 1, according to a briefing paper by law firm Baker McKenzie.
Bandon is home to a casino project being pushed by Vietnamese company Sun Group. The latter company is not connected to Suncity Brands, an investor at Hoiana Casino Resort on Vietnam’s central coast.
According to a Baker McKenzie briefing document, the formalized quarantine period applied upon arrival at Bandon Airport will be halved from 14 days to seven days: Those who have been vaccinated “fully” or recovered from COVID-19 “12 months ago,” tested negative for the infection identified on day one and day six of isolation respectively, or presented antibody test results for the virus that causes COVID-19 at the same time.
After seven days of centralized quarantine, arrivals will “continue to quarantine for another seven days” at their respective accommodations and should monitor their health for another 14 days, said a paper by Nguyen Thuy Hang and Tong Phong Ruk of Baker McKenzie.
“Those with insufficient vaccination doses will remain in intensive isolation for 14 days,” the authors said of the Bandon pilot scheme, adding that their health should be monitored for the next 14 days.

The protocol will run from 12 a.m. on Monday to 12 a.m. on July 26.
Grand Korea Leisure’s other Seoul casino hotel, Gangnam COEX, was closed from 3 p.m. on Saturday to 11 a.m. on Monday due to pandemic measures, a Seven Luck Gangnam official told GGRAsia, according to an online venue announcement.
An official at the venue said that the temporary closure of the COEX casino in Gangnam over the weekend was made at the headquarters level as a countermeasure against COVID-19.
As a result of GGRAsia’s phone call with GKL officials today, there are no plans to temporarily close casino locations after Wednesday.
Separately, Paradise Inc., another foreigner-only casino operator in Korea, confirmed to GGRAsia that Walkerhill Casino in Seoul and Paradise City Casino Resort in Incheon will continue to operate this week. The company also said Paradise City’s resumption of non-gaming on July 16 is currently underway.
The company said last week that it would evaluate the relaunch situation.
As of 12 a.m. on Monday, South Korea recorded 1,100 new COVID-19 cases in a 24-hour period, with 169,146 cases, including 2,044 deaths, and 154,187 people released from quarantine, according to the ministry.

The 2024 KUSF College Basketball U-League has resumed after a break from midterm exams. Sungkyunkwan University, which has two wins and two losses in the first four games of the league, will host Dongguk University on the 29th to try to win its third win of the season.
