20.
South Carolina starter Garrett Gainey, who had one previous start this season prior to tonight, held the Vols’ offense to no runs and three hits through five innings. But again, the offense got going late in the game, with two home runs in the sixth and a Blake Burke, game-sealing home run in the seventh, while Drew Beam turned in another quality start of six innings, 1 ER and 4 Ks, which was enough to get him the win, put him at 8-2 on the year and secure the series win for Tennessee with an 8-3 final score.

 21.
Gainey allowed just six base runners through five innings and held the Vols to 0-6 with runners on base to that point. Christian Moore started the game 2-2, but given Gainey had allowed only one other hit to Hunter Ensley with one out in the second, none of those base hits from Moore were RBI chances.

 22.
UT starter Drew Beam started the game off with two quick outs on ground balls, but then walked his first hitter of the game. The base runner at first was quickly snatched up by Beam with a blink-and-you-miss-it pick-off move to first that caught the runner who’d strayed just far enough from first for Burke to apply the tag.

 30.
Beam ran into trouble in the second when he allowed a single to lead off the inning. After a fly-ball out, the runner on first advanced to second on Tennessee’s first error of the inning, and then Beam walked the next hitter on five pitches.

 31.
A fielder’s choice should have gotten the lead runner and made it two outs in the inning, but instead, another Vol error allowed all the runners to reach safely and load the bases.

 32.
Two-straight run-scoring singles and a sac fly gave the Gamecocks a 3-0 lead with Christian Moore and Blake Burke being charged with the two previous errors. Two of the three runs scored were counted as unearned for Beam.

 33.
Gainey sat the UT hitters down in order in the fourth and fifth innings, while Beam found his groove when he allowed just one runner and no runs in the same frames. In the fifth, SC sent the runner from first to second with two outs, Stark made the throw and Curley made a heady play to keep the tag on as the SC would-be base thief started his slide late and passed up the bag.

 41.
Beam pitched the sixth, struck out a batter and sat the SC lineup down in order. That ended up as his last half inning of the game, and he finished with 6 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 1 ER, 2 BB and 4 Ks. Vitello took him out at 104 pitches, with 59 going for called or swinging strikes.

 42.
Tennessee’s offense followed a recent trend of productive sixth innings when Moore hit a solo home run with one out that went 419 feet to the opposite field with a 109 MPH exit velo for his 27th dinger of the year.

 65.

 66.
In the B7, the offense put its final stamp on the game against the SC bullpen that just couldn’t keep the same energy from Gainey’s impressive start to the game. Jake McCoy gave up two runs in 0.2 innings following Gainey and Parker Marlatt served up a grand slam to Blake Burke after McCoy surrendered a four-pitch, one-out walk followed by a HBP. Marlatt entered, walked Moore and served up a ball that Burke just destroyed over the fence in center — one that went 448 feet and left the park at 112 MPH. Tennessee needed just one hit to plate four runs in the home half of the seventh.

 72.
 73.

 74.
At the end of the fifth inning, Tennessee was down 3-0 and had three hits. By the end of the seventh, it was an 8-3 game thanks to back-to-back four spots in the sixth and seventh frames.

 75.
Combs got the ball in the eighth, and despite Moore’s second error of the game, the Vols’ RS-JR stranded a man on third, struck out two, which included the final hitter of the inning on a gnarly breaking ball.

 81.
 82.

 83.
The bats kept chugging along in the B8 as Ensley on a full-count walk, and Kavares Tears smacked a double down the line in right off Marlatt, which put two RISP with no outs.

 84.
Carolina went back to the bullpen for Michael Polk, who came in and struck out Ariel Antigua on three-straight fastballs before he hit Cannon Peebles with a pitch to load the bases. Polk got Stark to strikeout, again on the fastball, and sat down Moore for the first time of the game on a ground-ball out. Tennessee left the bases loaded, but it didn’t matter in the end.

 85.
Combs’ final line, with some help from Antigua in the B9 on two different outs: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 Ks.

 86.
Moore’s final line: 3-4, I HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 0 K

 87.
Burke went just 1-4, but the one was his 16th long ball of the year that added four RBIs.

 88.
Ensley finished 2-3 with 3 RBIs, one HR, one BB.

 89.
Tears went 1-4, but nobody after him in the order managed a hit, as Ensley batted in the fifth spot tonight.

 90.
The Vols defense committed a season-high four errors, and it was the first time Tennessee committed more than two errors so far this season in a single contest. UT is 6-3 this season in games when it commits at least two errors, but that’s an overall stat — not one that just singles out SEC play, for contextual purposes.

 91.
UT goes for the series sweep tomorrow at 1 PM EST.

 114.
11th shutout of the year for the star sophomore

Following a disappointing performance in the SEC tournament, the Lady Vols hosted their first regional game against the Dayton Flyers.

 115.
Just like they’d done all season, Tennessee looked to Sophomore phenom Karlyn Pickens to carry them from inside the circle — and carry them she did.

 116.
From the first pitch of the game, Pickens looked locked in, striking out the side in order on just 12 pitches. 12.....pitches (read that like the guy from Elf who says SIX....inches). The first inning was just a sign of things to come for Pickens, who retired 12 of the first 14 batters she faced. Pickens, who was recently named a top-10 finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, finished with the game 12 strikeouts, allowing two hits in seven innings of work. Most impressive part? She did it in only 75 pitches. Economic as all hell. It was the seventh time this year she recorded 10 or more strikeouts, and it was her 11th shutout of the season.

 124.

 125.
Offensively, Tennessee didn’t have much going as for the second consecutive game. All-American outfielder Kiki Milloy logged another hitless game, going 0-4 with two strikeouts and leaving two runners on base. The Lady Vols only mustered together four hits in total. But thankfully, four hits was all they needed.

 126.
In the bottom of the second inning Destiny Rodriguez launched a two run single over the wall - yes, you read that correctly. It was initially a three run home run, but because Rodriguez past Koutsoyanopulos while rounding first base, she was ruled out and the three run home run was then ruled a two-run single. Got all that? Good.

 127.
Tennessee was able to add an insurance run in the bottom of the 5th after Sophia Nugent singled in Taylor Pannell.

 128.
Tennessee will now play Virginia, tomorrow at 1:00pm ET. You can find a full boxscore of today’s game here.

 149.
It’s really happening!

Oh man, here we go.

 150.
We now have an official trailer for the upcoming College Football 25 video game, which has been revived by EA Sports. The game took an agonizing 11 years off, but has been brought back to life thanks to the NIL era. In just two months, we’ll all be able to play our all-time favorite video game — finally on a next gen console.

 151.
Take a look at the trailer below. It doesn’t disappoint.

 152.

 153.
We’ve come a long way from those NCAA ‘14 graphics, huh?

 154.
We still don’t have a ton of details about the game itself, like the new-era dynasty details. What will the transfer portal look like? Will NIL be a part of the game? If so, how does that affect recruiting? Will it play just like Madden?

 155.
EA Sports announced on Thursday that the game will be released on July 19th. If I go MIA during that time frame, you’ll know where to find me.

 156.

 176.
Easy night.

Tennessee baseball opened their final conference series of the season on Thursday night with a convincing win. The Volunteers handled the Gamecocks without any drama.

 177.
Tennessee and South Carolina traded first inning homeruns to kick things off. It was Christian Moore going deep for Tennessee, nodding things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.

 178.
Tennessee would quickly blow things open in the bottom of the third. Another Christian Moore homerun would break the tie, giving the Volunteers a 2-1 lead. Kavares Tears would follow that up with a three-run shot of his own, driving in Hunter Ensley and Dylan Dreiling.

 192.

 193.
Very quickly, it was a 5-1 lead for No. 1 Tennessee.

 194.
Tony Vitello turned to AJ Causey on the mound in the fourth, relieving starter Chris Stamos.

 195.
Blake Burke drove in Cal Stark in the bottom of the fourth, drilling a line drive to the opposite field all the way to the wall. Tennessee carried a 5-1 lead into the fifth inning, and Causey was rolling.

 196.
Tennessee came back in the bottom of the seventh with plenty of insurance. Billy Amick doubled down the line to score Christian Moore, then Dylan Dreiling smacked a homerun to right center. The Volunteers were cruising from here, holding a 9-2 lead entering the eighth inning.

 197.
South Carolina would eventually get to Causey, forcing him out of the game in favor of Kirby Connell. The Gamecocks would drive in one, but that’s all they got.

 198.
Connell closed things out in the top of the ninth without any issues. Tennessee went on to win, 9-3.

 199.
Tennessee and South Carolina will meet again tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. ET. SEC Network + will have the coverage.

 219.
 220.
The hype train is rollin’.

Tennessee took a clear step back with Joe Milton running the show in 2023, but can they return to more of that 2022 look this season? That all rests on the shoulders of quarterback Nico Iamaleava, who assumes the starting gig after sitting for the majority of his freshman season.

 221.
The former five-star, No. 1 overall player took his redshirt season behind Milton, but got a chance to show what he had in the Citrus Bowl win over Iowa. The early returns were special, beating up on an Iowa defense that was regarded as one of the best units in the country.

 222.
Fans and analysts around the country took notice, and the hype train has been rolling ever since. Over at ESPN, Iamaleava was named the top breakout candidate of the 2024 college football season. Here’s what they had to say.

 223.

1. Nico Iamaleava, QB, Tennessee: There’s no surprise here. One of the most highly touted and anticipated players in last year’s high school class is set to get his shot at being Tennessee’s starting quarterback this season after a four-touchdown, MVP-winning performance in the Citrus Bowl last season. Iamaleava may be young, slight and inexperienced, but the hype surrounding him has been present for a reason. — Paolo Uggetti (ESPN)

 224.
Iamaleava will be surrounded by talent and a proven offensive system. Josh Heupel has proven he can produce offense in a few different ways, whether it be a heavy rushing look, downfield attack, or even a short pop-screen approach.

 225.
Utilizing receivers like Bru McCoy, Squirrel White, Dont’e Thornton, Chris Brazzell, Mike Matthews — a running back like Dylan Sampson — complete with an offensive line that returns veterans like Cooper Mays, Javontez Spraggins and John Campbell, Nico won’t be short on options.

 226.
All of that said, Iamaleava still has plenty to prove as a passer at this level. He’s short on experience, but he also has had bowl prep, spring ball and has the rest of the offseason ahead of him to master it all. What does that look like in the fall? If it’s anything like the win over Iowa, Tennessee is going to be just fine.

 227.

 245.

 246.
 247.
Interesting.

An offseason tradition — CBS Sports has released their annual college football head coach rankings ahead of the 2024 season. The list saw pretty major shake ups this year, with Jim Harbaugh bolting to the Chargers and Nick Saban retiring at Alabama.

 248.
Thanks to that, there was a new No. 1 at the top of the list. Kirby Smart landed at No. 1, followed by Ryan Day and questionably, Dabo Swinney. Brian Kelly and Steve Sarkisian rounded out the top five.

 249.
You have to scroll down outside of the top 20 to find Tennessee’s Josh Heupel. In year three, Heupel led Tennessee to a 9-4 record, fresh off of an 11-2 season and an Orange Bowl victory over Clemson. His 9-4 effort this year moved him down seven spots (?).

 250.

No. 23: Josh Heupel: Seeing how recency bias works in these rankings is always fun. Heupel leaped to No. 16 last year after the Volunteers went 11-2 and won the Orange Bowl, and I’d have argued he was ranked a little too high. Then the Volunteers follow it up with a 9-4 season, which was more than respectable, and he nearly drops out of the top 25 altogether. What changed aside from the record? This is the area where Heupel should’ve been ranked last year, but my bet would be that another nine-win season will have him drop a few spots. 2023 rank: 16 (-7)

 251.
23 seems low. It’s so easy to forget where this program was following the 2020 season, which saw Jeremy Pruitt get fired and 30+ players hit the transfer portal. Heupel inherited a complete disaster, then turned around and went 7-6 in year one. He had Tennessee ranked No. 1 in year two — that’s nothing short of a miracle turnaround.

 252.
Interestingly enough, the CBS Sports crew had no problem shooting Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz up 30 spots to No. 21 — even after three straight losing seasons to start his time in Columbia. Make that make sense.

 253.
Kentucky’s Mark Stoops also landed ahead of Heupel at No. 20. Look, I know Kentucky is a tough job and all, but top 20 seems like a bit much.

 254.
New Alabama head coach Kalen Deboer lands at No. 7 after making a run to the national title with Washington last season. Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin checked in at No. 14.

 255.
These are obviously meaningless, but they do generate a lot of conversation. What do you think of Heupel’s No. 23 ranking?

 256.

 285.
Tennessee will open with Chattanooga on August 31st in Knoxville. NC State will open on August 29th against Western Carolina.

 286.
The Wolfpack are coming off of a 9-3 mark last season, and like so many in the transfer portal era, have retooled ahead of the 2024 season. Head coach Dave Doeren (remember him?) found an upgrade at quarterback, landing veteran Grayson McCall from Coastal Carolina. His staff was also able to add Ohio State transfer Noah Rogers at receiver, while also picking up tight end Justin Joly from UConn.

 287.
It’s obviously early, but Tennessee has been installed as a five-point favorite in this matchup.

 288.
The Volunteers haven’t played NC State since 2012, which was a Tyler Bray-led 35-21 victory in the old Georgia Dome. Before that, the only meetings were back in 1939 and 1911. Tennessee holds a 2-1 advantage in the series.

 308.
Over or under?

Spring football is behind us and the transfer portal is finally winding down, now it’s time to talk. We’ve got about three and a half months until college football returns, but as they always do, the oddsmakers are already looking ahead to the fall.

 309.
Win totals have slowly been leaking out over the last few weeks, and now we have them for every SEC team. According to The Action Network, Tennessee’s number has been placed at 9.5, which ties with Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss and Missouri for third overall in the league. Georgia and Texas tied for first with their total set at 10.5.

 317.
So 9.5 games.... let’s take a look at the schedule one more time.

 318.
Tennessee 2024 Football Schedule

 319.
Aug. 31 vs. Chattanooga

 320.
Sept. 7 vs. NC State (Charlotte)

 321.
Sept. 14 vs. Kent State

 322.
Sept. 21 at Oklahoma

 323.
Sept. 28 BYE

 324.
Oct. 5 at Arkansas

 325.
Oct. 12 vs. Florida

 326.
Oct. 19 vs. Alabama

 327.
Oct. 26 BYE

 328.
Nov. 2 vs. Kentucky

 329.
Nov. 9 vs. Mississippi State

 330.
Nov. 16 at Georgia

 331.
Nov. 23 vs. UTEP

 332.
Nov. 30 at Vanderbilt

 333.
Tennessee’s first test will be getting past a good NC State team in Charlotte. Assuming they can do that, a September 21st date at Oklahoma serves at the Vols’ first ‘hinge’ game. The early summer lines have Tennessee as an underdog in that spot.

 334.
Should they pull that one off in Norman, the path is pretty clear to ten wins and the over. Dates against Alabama (Oct. 19 at home) and at Georgia (Nov. 16) will tell the rest of the story for Tennessee’s 2024 season. From there? Everything else looks fairly manageable.

 335.
For reference, Tennessee’s over 8.5 wins number on DraftKings Sportsbook has been hammered all the way down to -170. So the odds tell us Vegas is projecting a 9-3 season for Tennessee in 2024, but can they get to 10-2? That’s the question — and if they do, they’ll be in the thick of the College Football Playoff race.
