18.

We’re proud to welcome Belstaff as the newest addition to our roster. This iconic British brand has been making motorcycle jackets for more than 91 years, and with some sensible updates like D30 armor and modern waterproofing, they’re better than ever. Specifically, we’re now stocking three jackets from the company’s hard-to-find “Pure Motorcycle” line—all of which come with integrated armor and removable quilted liners. As of this writing we have full size runs in each: The Brooklands 8-ounce short waxed cotton jacket, the similarly short-cut in luxury-grade, Italian-made leather, and of course the brand’s trademark: the famous 3/4-length, made from heavy 10oz waxed cotton. Check out for detailed photos and descriptions of each jacket. Or better yet come in and try one on in person. These jackets are best measured by slipping one on, feeling their weight, seeing the impeccable stitching, and generally realizing that these jackets are built to last. But they won’t last long. And that’s not just some sales shtick it’s the truth. Once our first order of jackets is gone we won’t be getting restocked until the end of the season. / Rumors of Belstaff’s Death have been Greatly Exaggerated Besides the standard product info and specs we feel obliged here to reveal some of the thinking behind bringing Belstaff onboard. If for no other reason because the last time we posted something about the brand on this website it was to for selling out, and we figured, for abandoning its motorcycle roots. Turns out we were wrong. Sortof. Mostly. The brand did indeed sell out. For those counting at home, it’s done so three times in the last decade. First it went to Italian businessman Franco Malenotti in 2004, after he’d already spent years with the brand as a distributor and director; then it sold again, this time to a Swiss luxury goods conglomerate in 2011, with personal investment from Mr. Tommy Hilfiger; and then it sold again last summer to yet another European holding company looking to beef up its stable of luxury labels. During this time Belstaff generally pursued runway shows and Hollywood cameos more than developments in motorcycle gear, with one shining exception. In 2005 the brand launched its Pure Motorcycle collection of classic waxed cotton and leather motorcycle jackets beefed up with removable D3O armor and additional waterproof and thermal liners. While it’s been next to impossible find the Pure Motorcycle line in any stateside store, Belstaff has been making this same basic armor-equipped line for nearly a decade and, it says, is committed to keeping it in production for the foreseeable future. After we got a call from the recently reorganized Belstaff last summer, we took a close look at the product and found the quality to be so ridiculously good that we couldn’t say no. That the history and heritage behind the brand is next to none is just icing on the cake. // A Diamond in the Fluff Regardless of how one favors the fashion side of Belstaff’s business model, all those runway shows have without a doubt helped sustain the company’s tradition of turning out classic motorcycle jackets—which are now better than ever. The Malenotti family (Father Franco bought the company and son Michel was CEO at the time of the 2011 sale) is responsible for steering Belstaff’s public image towards the high fashion end of the apparel and outerwear spectrum. The also pumped up the brand’s public image through copious cameos and Hollywood product placements. And despite the fact they went so far as to team up with J.Crew to put out a special issue fashion-weight Trialmaster, they didn’t abandon the brand’s motorcycle history—that DNA is far too valuable. Commendably, the Malenottis launched the Pure Motorcycle line in 2005, helping the brand maintain a foothold with motorcyclists. They also moved production to Italy—a bummer for faithful British motorcycle riders, but the move seems to have been a good thing for craftsmanship and quality control. U.S. motorcycle riders can be forgiven for having never heard of the Pure Motorcycle line before. There have been virtually no retail shops stocking it and there’s been zero real promotion on this side of the pond. If you have seen a Belstaff ad, it’s probably at best been Ewan McGregor or David Beckam, or at worst even further from its motorcycle roots: a somber glamour mode l showing off the latest high-priced women’s trench coat or pants suit. Are these jackets expensive? Damn right they are. As we’ve said before we don’t carry high-end gear for the sake of being high end. We look to stock quality gear that’ll last the test of time, and these jackets hit the mark.

 27.

Made from a patented polymer who’s molecules flow freely at rest, yet lock together when impacted, D3O is one of the most exciting innovations in protective gear in the last decade. First used at the winter olympics in 2006, it’s only just begun appearing in motorcycle gear, most notably in Klim adventure touring suits and in Icon Stryker Field Armor. Its unique properties allow it to be unprecedentedly slim and flexible while still offering CE-certified protection, which we thought would make it perfect for our little project to make ourselves stylish, yet safe motorcycle jackets. We’ve been playing with a whole mess o’ D3O protectors, from basic 13mm thick, contoured shoulder and elbow armor to the same equipped with hard plastic panels to protect from penetration to CE Level 1 and CE Level 2 back protectors. Explaining the way D3O works is really simple, even if I have no idea how it actually does what it does. It doesn’t go hard when impacted, the force is simply spread across a wide area. So you’re still getting good absorption. The active ingredient is actually a liquid that does turn hard, but, in its production form, that liquid is set into a foam that remains pliable. Because it can spread impact forces across a large area, it can afford to be thinner, absorbing the same amount of energy in a slimmer package than traditional armor or more energy if its the same size. The actual chemical makeup and sciencey stuff is like the recipe for Coke, a secret. Check out these pictures of a CE Level 2 D3O Viper Pro Back Protector compared to a CE Level 1 Alpinestars Bio Armor Back Protector. At 18mm thick, the D3O protector is approximately the same size and weight as the Bio Armor and covers pretty much the same area. Yet, the D3O protector is CE Level 2, meaning it transmits approximately half the force to the wearer as the Level 1 Alpinestars. If you’re trying to build in protection without bulk, that’s simply amazing. It’s not that the Alpinestars protector is a bad product. In fact, it’s the opposite, it’s outstanding in its affordability ($30) and comfort. That D3O is able to double the protection of an excellent product from such a progressive company is indicative of the possibilities this material offers. Yet, there’s a reason I opted for Alpinestars Bio Armor in my Vanson AR2 instead of the D3O protectors. In the elbows and shoulders, the Bio Armor covers a larger area and, due to Grant and I’s limited sewing skills, the way more dense, rubber-like material of the Bio Armor made it easier to work with. In fact, we’re probably not going to end up using any D3O shoulder or elbow protectors in the project at all, it requires very specific placement because its quite small and a pocket (sewing thread through it would cut the material). Things that surpass our ability as sewing numpties. D3O is still a young company and its products are still developing. While the material is simply amazing, the forms it’s been taking so far are a bit hit and miss. Rather than capitalizing on how thin and flexible the material is and expanding its area of coverage, D3O is making its protectors to fit into existing armor pockets. In that role, D3O doesn’t really excel. Traditional motorcycle jackets aren’t cut to take advantage of its slimness and, in that slim configuration, it doesn’t offer any more protection that standard, bulky armor. We’d much rather see far thicker armor that could offer increased protection in the same size as traditional armor for normal motorcycle jackets and entire garments developed around D3O to take advantage of its form factor. For instance, you could have it line virtually the entire forearm, wrapping almost the whole way around the arm, and it wouldn’t feel that different from a normal leather jacket or need to incorporate bulkiness in the elbows. As it is, I’m using the D3O back protector in place of Level 1 protectors in my normal bike jackets to take advantage of its light weight, flexibility and added protection. I could do so much more if the other protectors would have been a bit larger. It’s our hope that, as the company matures and awareness of the material increases, they’ll work with gear makers to create jackets, pants, suits, etc that can take better advantage of what they’ve invented. This could change the motorcycle gear world if it’s done right.

It was the model ridden by Marlon Brando's character Johnny Strabler in the 1953 film The Wild One. However, it is said that Winkler couldn't handle the Triumph and would be pushed in and out of shots during the sitcom, which ran from 1974 to 1984. The bike was provided by Bud Ekins, the stuntman who was Steve McQueen's double in The Great Escape and made the famous motorcycle jump over a barbed wire fence. It is being sold by Profiles in History in California, which is also auctioning a Fonz leather jacket that has an estimate of £30, 000. 'Originally a bit player, Fonzie became the breakout star of Happy Days. 'This '49 Triumph is one of three Triumph motorcycles The Fonz used during the show's 10-year run on ABC. 'It is often rumoured that Henry Winkler was frequently pushed on the bike by stage-hands, confirmed by his own admissions due to his inability to ride a motorcycle. It is being sold by Profiles in History in California, which is also auctioning a Fonz leather jacket that has an estimate of £30, 000 'The cool factor of this Triumph is impossible to quantify or duplicate. 63.

The leather jacket: Marlon Brando and James Dean made it a symbol of rebellion. Today it's no longer relegated to young fashion but is a style icon all throughout American culture. You don't have to be a revolutionary to use a leather jacket to show off your unique personality. In this buying guide, you'll read about the ten ultimate styles that define the leather jacket in fashion today. Important Information on Buying a Leather Jacket Leather jackets surround any man who wears them with an atmosphere of freedom and a touch of cool. Whether you wear yours while shopping on the weekend, on the way to work, or under a starry city sky – a leather jacket is always a great casual companion. If you take care of it, of course. Whether you're going for grunge or business casual, you need to treat your leather jacket at least once a year with leather cleaner or oil. If you're too lazy to do it yourself, just take your men's leather jacket to a quality leather goods shop. When you're buying a new leather jacket, you should look at the price. You'll get what you pay for in this case. Inexpensive leather jackets are often made with low quality leather or faux leather, or might be patched together from multiple pieces. You can recognize quality in a jacket that has a genuine leather label. Look at the seams as well: there should be as few as possible, and you shouldn't see any fraying. 1. The Grunge Leather Jacket: Against the Mainstream Grunge lives, and it's even experiencing a revival. This style and sound go back to the American underground music scene of the late 1980s and 1990s, with its rough guitar sounds and rebellious mood. The style: loose, destroyed jeans, a band T-shirt like Nirvana or Pearl Jam with old Chucks or clunky boots. You can combine them with a plaid shirt or lumberjack look (unbuttoned at the neck), tousled hair, and maybe a baseball cap. 2. The Preppy Style: A Touch of Irony The preppy look started in the 1980s. It actually reflects the styles prevalent in US private high schools, but today people tend to wear the style more ironically. To get this look, choose a close fitting dark brown or grey leather jacket. Give your hair a side part, and add a pair of horn-rimmed glasses, a polo shirt or button-down, and a vest in a bright color or pastel. Choose chinos or casual pants in khaki, blue, or green and pair them with boat shoes or loafers. This look gives anyone a younger look, and indicates the wearer has both a sense of style and a sense of humor. 3. The Athletic Leather Jacket: Quintessential American If you like to wear baseball caps and ¾ sleeve jerseys, then this athletic style is for you. Grab your most comfortable pair of jeans or chinos, add an athletic cut sweater or baseball shirt, cool sneakers, and finish the outfit with a leather jacket. Choose a casual style in dark brown or grey, perhaps a bomber jacket style.

There are many "leather protector" or "leather waterproofing" products, but read the label carefully before buying. A silicone polymer spray, or an acrylic copolymer spray, should preserve your leather's appearance and shine. Grease-based or wax-based products are more protective, but not recommended for jackets due to their potential effect on color, longevity, shine, and smell. Check the label on your product to find out how long the water resistance lasts. Typically, the product needs to be re-applied once every several weeks or months...

 81.

Not so long ago, motorcycle riding gear only had leather as the main material for body armor. Occasionally, there was leather in layers, or a little padding here and there to provide impact and abrasion protection for key areas like the joints. Now, there are way more options and not only are they affordable, but they are also tested for effectiveness against an international standard. But even though their performance is tested against a common standard—CE EN1621-1: 2012—their designs are not standardized. There are some important differences. I took a look at four brands and styles of body armor, or more properly called “impact protectors, ” to see how they differed. I will offer some insights into what factors might be worth looking at when buying replacement armor, adding armor to a jacket that has armor pockets (but did not come with it), or buying a new already-armored jacket. All the protectors are for shoulder and elbow location, but chest and back protectors are also available. We put the following armor side-by-side: Knox Air V2 Part 45 (as used in some Triumph products, for example), Alpinestars BioArmor, ICON Field Armor and Harley-Davidson Dual Layer Air Limb protectors. First, a little background on the test standards: The EN 1621-1 test is used to assess the protective qualities of armor worn on the limb joints. To conduct the test, a product sample is placed over a rigid metal hemispherical anvil with a radius of 50 mm, which is connected to a rigid base via a high speed force sensor. A metal impactor weighing 5 kg with a flat strike face, 80 mm x 40 mm, is dropped onto the sample from a height necessary to generate an impact speed of 4.47 meters per second. This is equivalent to an impact energy of 50 joules. Upon impact, the force transmitted through the sample to the anvil is measured by the force transducer. The lower the force transmitted to the transducer, the more protective a product is considered to be. The mean maximum transmitted force must be below 35 kN and no single value should be over 50 kN in order for the product to be found to meet the performance standard. The standard includes additional tests to assess performance in high and low temperature environments, plus after storage in humid conditions. A companion standard, EN 1621-2: 2014, applies to back and lumbar protectors. Only after passing the required tests can a product bear the “CE” (Certification Europe) label. Some manufacturers may claim performance exceeding the minimum standard by a certain percentage, as well. Knox, Alpinestars, ICON, Harley-Davidson. Shoulder protector shown above, elbow protector below and inverted to show the interior surface. The products are generally similar, yet noticeably different in design—all but Harley-Davidson’s Air Limb product are molded in an anatomical curve that wraps around the elbow or shoulder area. The H-D product is flat as a pancake and is constructed of two layers: a dense, perforated foam inner and a tough (but flexible) outer matrix with openings throughout the matrix to align with the vent holes in the bottom layer. At first glance, this would seem likely to create pressure points where the flat surface of the protector presses against the curvature of the rider’s body. The H-D armor is pliable and slotted to allow the pad to curve when the garment is on. In using jackets with this type of armor for the past couple of years, pressure points did not develop as a problem, except briefly when the product was new and if the jacket is sized to fit fairly snugly. For a brief time of initial use—in a snug jacket—there was some pressure right at the point of the shoulder. It wasn't uncomfortable, but it was there nonetheless. No pressure points were noticeable with the elbow pads. Of course, a snug fit is part of the formula for keeping the armor in place when it counts so it can provide the necessary protection. Over time, the product assumes a partial curve based on the wearer’s contour and the presence of the protector becomes less and less noticeable.

Working with some of the most evocative names in motorcycle racing, Dainese led the way in the development of leather stretch panels, knee sliders and race suits- cut to suit the rider in a real world riding position. The 80's brought back protectors (with Barry Sheene), composite armour, and more aerodynamic suits; whilst the 90's brought gloves with knuckle armour and the first biking airbag system. Dainese remains at the forefront of motorcycle clothing technology and continues to be the brand of choice for the biggest names in bike racing, all the way up to the greatest rider of all time, Valentino Rossi. Today, Dainese is one of the most recognisable, coolest, and most aspirational motorcycle brands on the planet. With a well deserved reputation for safety that has crossed over into nearly every extreme sport there is, the name Dainese is synonymous with style, protection, comfort and durability. It symbolized proletarian ruggedness, ideological fortitude, and the quintessential expression of revolutionary manliness. The fact that few “proletarians” could avoid such a luxury was irrelevant. Cowhide was more an accoutrement for those who lacked the proletarian stock to acquire the image of a defender of the working masses. Thus when the author V. F. Panova’s husband decided shed his intellectual lineage and “forge” himself into an “iron Bolshevik, ” he strutted around in a leather jacket, “spoke with an echoing base” and “worked at a wild pace to add extra authenticity. By the late 1930s, when most communists abandoned leather for wool suits, the jacket became the provenance of the secret police, the self-anointed embodiment of the Revolution. Indeed, leather’s sleek shine went well with Felix Dzerzhinsky’s famous slogan that a good Chekist had “clean hands, a cool head, and a warm heart.” That is to say, as the leather jacket served as a communist costume to mimic militancy, so did Dzerzhinsky’s slogan varnish the fact that in reality, Chekists had neither clean hands, cool heads, nor warm hearts. This jaunt back into Soviet history is merely to note that some habits die hard, especially if they’re seared into tradition and memory. The leather jacket continues to have meaning for Russia’s security organs. So much so that the Federal Protective Service (FSO), which serves as Presidential security and possesses a wide range of police powers, placed an order to purchase 120 black leather jackets for its high ranking officers, reports Zakupki-News, a site that monitors government officials’ outlandish spending. The cost for just 60 Chekist chic jackets is about 3 million rubles ($106, 000). The Cheka-GPU-NKVD redux wasn’t lost on readers. One commenter on Zakupki-News wrote, “They still haven’t bought the Mausers?” in reference to the pistol used to execute “enemies of the people” in the 1930s. Another quipped, “Or is so this they can standout among the People’s Front?” Or another, “Ah, beautiful. Dirt to filth is a natural movement.”
