Well, you'd be wrong. A recent poll shows that people are more embarrassed about their credit score than either their age or weight (granted, age and weight come in a close second and third).

What is it about credit scores that people find embarrassing? It all has to do with shame, and that exact feeling is precisely what many creditors use to get consumers to pay debts quickly - sometimes even illegally.

The Student Loan Scenario

Because it's something that nearly thirty-seven million people in the US struggle with daily, student loans are the perfect example of loans that people are ashamed about. In fact, student loan debt is one of the main reasons why many people feel shame related to a credit score in the first place. Student loans can really ruin a credit score even if all of your other debts are paid. But it's the shame that goes along with student loans that creditors use to their advantage.

Some of the common tactics that a student loan company or collection agency will use to make sure that debts are paid including the following:

Threatening to call people you know about your loan (illegal unless you have a legal co-signer)

Telling you to cash in bonds and retirement savings to pay loans

Calling you past certain hours of the evening when you're likely to be with friends or family (illegal in some states)

Calling you numerous times at work (illegal in some states if you have asked the caller to stop)

Why do many people buckle and pay for student loans due to these pressure tactics? Mostly because they feel ashamed. Shame is an emotion that collection agencies know very well, which is why these tactics work so well. So, it's no wonder that most people are more embarrassed by their credit score than anything else - even weight or age.

Credit Card Balances Take the Cake

In a recent poll, the one thing that most people found incredibly shameful about a credit score was the amount of debt carried via credit cards. Credit card debt is a huge problem in the U.S., and many people often spend more than they can actually afford simply because credit cards allow them to do so. Carrying around the burden of credit card debt is a presence that never goes away, and unlike weight or age it cannot be discarded without paying off that debt.

How can you break away from these shameful feelings? The first thing that you can do is talk to your creditors to try and make some kind of arrangement. After that, make sure that you know what your rights are, and try to think of some ways to pay down debt. If you cannot pay down debt on your own, you may want to consider bankruptcy. Often, declaring bankruptcy will help you discharge your debts (though not student loans!), so that you can get a fresh start and feel better about the debt that you do carry around with you.

Use Emotional Intelligence to Get Out of Debt

We all know what Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is, but have you been hearing the buzz lately about Emotional Quotient (EQ)? Well, if you haven't, then I'll start with a basic definition from Psychology Today:

What Is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. It is generally said to include 3 skills:

Emotional awareness, including the ability to identify your own emotions and those of others;

The ability to harness emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problems solving;

The ability to manage emotions, including the ability to regulate your own emotions, and the ability to cheer up or calm down another person

In achieving financial freedom from debt, we can apply the same skills in sustaining our long term goals, or even short cutting the time and effort involved by finding the best possible solution for our particular concerns.

So, what does getting a hold of our emotions have to do with getting out of debt? Great Question and one that I looked at from a money making standpoint. In a recent article by Inc. magazine entitled, 12 Habits That Set Ultra Successful People Apart. The highlight of this article was a discussion on how the ultra successful people use EQ to get stuff done and you can too.

Here are some key tools to help you get out of debt:

Keep your composer by monitoring your emotions and what it feels like to have this much debt that you cannot manage. Remember that no matter what, this too shall pass. Focus on the outcome rather than the present mess, to carry you through.

Get informed and be knowledgeable. When you are constantly working on yourself to increase your own self awareness about how you earn, manage, and grow financially because you're passionate about it, then, you're ready to get out of debt completely. Gather all the information you need to make a well-informed decision for yourself.

Take your time and be deliberate in your decisions. Impulsiveness may have gotten you into financial trouble, but financial freedom from debt requires you to slow down and logically think through the problem.

5 Tips on Managing Your

Effective financial management is necessary for staying out of the red. But not everybody knows how to handle their money properly. For example, how is an average person who has virtually no knowledge on financial management supposed to take care of his cash? If you've been wondering but haven't yet figured out how, here are 5 simple ways to manage your finances and stay above the line by yourself:

1) Start budgeting.

Planning how to spend your available money, or budgeting, is a great way to stay on top of your finances. Not only will you be able to keep track of your funds and cash flow, but you'll also be effectively preventing yourself from spending more than you should. To monitor your comings and goings as clearly as possible, make a list, create a spreadsheet, or use an online budget planner.

2) Stop making unnecessary expenses.

Once you know how and on which things you spend, start cutting back on those you don't really need. There may be a lot. For instance, do you have a grande latte at Starbucks every morning? If you do, not including the money you spend on gas or the transport fare, that's nearly $900.00 a year. Making coffee at home yourself will cost a lot less. The fewer frivolous expenditures you make, the less likely you'll get into debt.

3) Don't use or stop using credit cards if possible.

While convenient, using credit cards could be a slippery slope down to incurring debt. It makes spending money too easy. It lets you spend even if you haven't got the money yet, which could encourage you to spend more than you should. Pay with bills as often as possible instead. Apart from keeping a close eye on your available funds, you'll be able to prevent yourself from spending too much. According to a study, the more money-especially crisp bills-people handle, the less we'd like to spend.

4) If you need a credit card, apply for one with a low interest rate, but make sure to understand the agreement before signing.

If you need a credit card for, say, your job or doing business, apply for one that won't require you to pay a high interest rate. The lower the interest, the more money you could save. But there might be other expenses in the agreement, so go over it carefully before signing to make sure that you aren't biting off more than you can chew.
