The legendary partnership between Ducati and Lamborghini continues to capture imaginations, and now, with the release of the Panigale V4 Lamborghini, this high-performance alliance reaches new heights. First unveiled at Milan Design Week, this machine draws deep inspiration from Lamborghini’s first plug-in hybrid supercar, the Revuelto, merging radical design with motorsport engineering.

Where Art Meets Engineering

Designed through a close collaboration between Ducati’s Centro Stile and Lamborghini’s stylists, the Panigale V4 Lamborghini immediately stands out with a unique visual identity. The livery—featuring a bold black carbon-fiber finish with visible weave—marks a striking departure from Ducati’s signature red. Moreover, additional color options like Verde Scandal, Grigio Telesto, and Grigio Acheso nod directly to Lamborghini’s design DNA. These are further highlighted by a seat inspired by the Revuelto’s interior, tying the bike’s aesthetics directly to its automotive muse.

Credit: Ducati

Details That Define a Superbike

While the mechanical core of the bike remains largely consistent with the latest Panigale V4, the transformation goes far beyond surface-level changes. For instance, Ducati has modified the tail section, wing design, and forged aluminum rims to echo the sharp, aerodynamic lines of Lamborghini’s supercars. In addition, billet aluminum detailing on the triple clamp, levers, and counterweights enhances both the performance and the premium feel. Notably, engraved markings and a Desmosedici Stradale plate on the engine give each unit a distinct identity.

Furthermore, the widespread use of carbon fiber, from the mudguards to the heel guard and heat shield, not only enhances its aesthetics but also significantly reduces weight. As a result, the Panigale V4 Lamborghini weighs in at just 408 lb (185 kg)—lighter than the stock model—thus improving its already impressive power-to-weight ratio to 1.18 hp/kg.

Performance Meets Exclusivity

Beneath the aggressive fairing, Ducati’s 1,103cc Desmosedici Stradale V4 engine remains untouched, but that’s hardly a downside. It still delivers 218.5 horsepower and 90 lb.ft of torque, especially when paired with the sleek Akrapovič titanium silencer featuring carbon tips. As such, this machine isn’t just inspired by the track—it’s ready for it. Each model includes race-ready components like a removable license plate holder, carbon open clutch cover, and brake caliper air conveyors.

In terms of availability, production is capped at 630 numbered units, each arriving with a certificate of authenticity, a special rear stand, and a tailored bike cover. These come packaged in a custom wooden crate—all for a price of $78,400.

Credit: Ducati

For the Few: The Speciale Clienti Edition

For those seeking even greater exclusivity, Ducati offers the Panigale V4 Lamborghini Speciale Clienti. Limited to just 63 units, this version is available only to Lamborghini owners. Moreover, buyers can customize the color scheme to match their personal Lambo—even down to the rear stand and storage crate. Optional extras include a matching helmet, jacket, and leather suit, plus personalized triple clamp engraving.

That extra touch of customization comes at a price—$100,400.

Dream Machine or Dollar Drain?

With deliveries scheduled for September 2025, this Ducati-Lambo hybrid isn’t just a motorcycle—it’s a rolling tribute to elite engineering and style. Of course, one could argue that the same money could buy a luxury EV like a Hummer SUV, a Mercedes-AMG GT 53, or a Porsche Cayenne S Coupe.

Even so, for those who crave rarity, speed, and design pedigree, this carbon-clad masterpiece offers something truly rare: a fusion of passion and precision on two wheels. Ultimately, for the lucky few who secure one, it won’t just be a ride—it’ll be an icon.

In the microscopic battlefield between plants and microbes, recent research has uncovered a surprising tactic used by bacterial invaders to evade plant immune systems—shedding new light on the complex arms race happening every day in nature.

How Plants Detect Bacterial Threats

Just like humans, plants have evolved intricate immune defenses to detect and respond to invading pathogens. One of their frontline strategies involves identifying pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs)—molecular signatures unique to microbes. A major PAMP is flagellin, a protein that forms the structure of bacterial flagella, the tiny whip-like tails that help bacteria move.

When a plant detects flagellin using specialized receptors, it activates immune responses. But bacteria have evolved a clever disguise: they coat their flagellin in sugars, effectively masking it from plant sensors. In turn, plants fight back by producing enzymes that strip away the sugary shield, revealing the hidden threat.

The Bacterial Secret Weapon: Glycosyrin

A new study highlighted in Science, with commentary by Frank Schroeder of the Boyce Thompson Institute, reveals that some bacteria—like Pseudomonas syringae—have taken this deception even further. They produce a molecule called glycosyrin, which blocks the plant’s sugar-removing enzymes. This prevents the exposure of flagellin, allowing bacteria to remain undetected.

Glycosyrin doesn’t just hide the bacteria—it also disrupts the plant’s sugar metabolism, leading to the accumulation of sugar-rich compounds in plant tissues. These changes create a more favorable environment for bacterial growth and suppress broader immune responses.

A Widespread Strategy with Global Implications

Researchers have found that many plant pathogens carry the genes needed to produce glycosyrin, suggesting this stealth tactic is common across the microbial world. Understanding how it works could be key to creating stronger, more resilient crops.

From Plants to People: Biomedical Potential of Iminosugars

Interestingly, glycosyrin belongs to a class of compounds called iminosugars. Similar molecules are already used in human medicine to treat conditions like type II diabetes and rare genetic disorders. Glycosyrin’s unique structure could inspire new pharmaceutical approaches, particularly in modulating immune responses.

Toward Smarter Agriculture and Resilient Crops

For agriculture, this discovery opens new possibilities. By targeting glycosyrin or its effects, scientists could engineer crops with enhanced resistance to bacterial pathogens. This would reduce dependence on chemical pesticides and improve long-term food security.

Unlocking Nature’s Strategies for the Future

As we continue to unravel these hidden interactions between plants and microbes, we gain not only insight into plant immunity but also tools that could help reshape the future of farming and medicine. In the ongoing race between pathogens and hosts, understanding the chemistry of glycosyrin may help tip the balance toward more sustainable solutions.

Despite global climate goals aiming to limit warming to 1.5°C, recent data shows that this threshold is rapidly approaching. With emissions still on the rise, the planet is now edging closer to 1.4°C of warming, making a temporary overshoot of the 1.5°C target highly likely.

In response, a growing conversation is emerging among scientists, policymakers, and civil society: What does it mean to “keep 1.5°C alive” in the era of climate overshoot?

New Review Offers Roadmap for Understanding Climate Overshoot

A comprehensive review published in the Annual Review of Environment and Resources addresses this critical issue. Written by a global team of climate scientists and policy experts—including contributors to the IPCC—the study examines:

Climate risks during and after overshoot

Adaptation and vulnerability factors

Emission reduction strategies

Global and national policy implications

The review introduces a conceptual framework to understand how climate risks evolve when global temperatures exceed 1.5°C, and what actions could reverse that trend.

Risks and Realities in a World That Exceeds 1.5°C

Overshooting 1.5°C, even temporarily, will have undeniable and potentially irreversible impacts. The review highlights risks such as the permanent loss of ecosystems, more extreme and frequent weather events, and cascading effects that worsen global inequalities. There is also concern about crossing tipping points like the melting of major ice sheets or dieback of the Amazon rainforest, which could push the climate into an entirely new and dangerous state.

Even if the temperature is brought back down, the damage done during the overshoot period would not be fully erased. However, returning to or below 1.5°C would still significantly lower future risks compared to staying at higher levels indefinitely. In this context, effective adaptation strategies become essential—not only to protect vulnerable communities during the overshoot phase, but to manage the longer-term consequences as well.

Pathways Back from Overshoot: What Could Work?

To cool the planet after surpassing 1.5°C, the review identifies several key strategies. These include scaling up carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies, aggressively cutting down residual CO₂ emissions, and reducing short-lived climate pollutants like methane. Achieving these goals would require efforts that go far beyond current national climate targets and demand strong global coordination.

The review makes it clear that the feasibility of returning to 1.5°C depends on how far we overshoot. The lower the peak temperature, the more realistic the recovery becomes—both technically and economically. Quick, decisive action to reduce emissions in the near term is therefore critical. This not only limits the extent of the overshoot but also keeps open the possibility of recovery.

A Complex Climate Journey Shaped by Policy and Equity

The path through and beyond climate overshoot is not a linear one. It is shaped by a complex web of trade-offs, political decisions, technological limits, and social preferences. Different regions and communities will experience the consequences differently, raising critical issues around climate justice, equity, and historical responsibility.

According to Professor Richard Betts from the University of Exeter and the UK’s Met Office, even if we manage to return to 1.5°C, the overshoot itself will leave lasting effects. But doing so would still be preferable to stabilizing at even higher levels of warming, where risks multiply and adaptation becomes far more difficult.

Tools and Resources for Navigating Overshoot

To support public understanding of these challenges, the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change (CMCC) has launched a new digital platform that offers science-based insights on what climate overshoot means and how it affects risk, mitigation, and adaptation planning. This initiative aims to empower decision-makers, researchers, and communities with the knowledge needed to make informed, climate-smart choices.

Is Returning to 1.5°C Still Possible?

While the idea of “keeping 1.5°C alive” may now include a temporary overshoot, the review reinforces that returning to this target—though difficult—is not impossible. However, it will require unprecedented collaboration, urgency, and innovation on a global scale.

Policymakers will need to navigate a range of options, balance priorities, and take bold, equitable actions. The window for avoiding the worst outcomes is narrowing, but it has not yet closed. The time to act is now.

Meta announced Monday that it’s using AI to detect kids who lie about their age on Instagram to bypass safety measures. When Instagram suspects an account belongs to a teen, even if it claims an adult age, it automatically places the account in a restricted Teen Account.

Launched last year, Teen Accounts come with built-in protections that limit who can contact the teen and what content they can see. Teens under 16 also need parental approval to change these settings.

Instagram Expands AI Age Verification to Better Protect Teen Users

Instagram has been using AI to estimate users’ ages for a while, but it now officially uses the technology to place teens in Teen Accounts instead of adult ones.

Last year, the company told TechCrunch it intended to take this step. It said it would identify teens using fake adult birthdays by spotting things like birthday posts and user reports.

Instagram Fine-Tunes AI to Accurately Assign Teen Accounts, Allows Manual Adjustments

Instagram says it works to ensure its AI accurately places teens in Teen Accounts, but users can still adjust their settings if a mistake occurs.

“The digital world keeps changing, and we need to adapt,” the company said in a blog post, emphasizing the importance of partnering with parents to help more teens access the protections built into Teen Accounts.

Instagram also announced it will start notifying parents with tips on how to talk to their teens about using their real age online. One key suggestion: check that their birthday is correct on the app.

This update follows Meta’s recent rollout of Teen Accounts on Facebook and Messenger. According to Meta, more than 54 million teens worldwide have been placed in these protected accounts, with 97% of users aged 13–15 still using them.

Humanoid robots still have a lot of ground to cover before they can match human runners. On Saturday, Beijing’s E-Town tech hub held what it called the world’s first half-marathon for humanoid robots, featuring 21 robotic participants running alongside thousands of human competitors.

According to Bloomberg, the race’s top-performing robot, Tiangong Ultra, was developed by the state-supported research institute X-Humanoid and completed the half-marathon in 2 hours and 40 minutes. While that’s a notable feat for a robot, it pales in comparison to human runners — the event’s fastest male runner finished in just over an hour, and many recreational runners typically clock in under two hours.

Most Robots, Including Tiangong Ultra, Needed Guidance to Complete the Race

Tiangong Ultra didn’t go it alone, either. It relied on a human running ahead wearing a signaling device on their back, allowing the robot to mimic their movements. In fact, most of the participating robots required some form of human assistance or remote control, often with operators running alongside them.

Tiangong robot won the Beijing half marathon with a time of 2 hours 40 minutes – more than twice the time of the men's race winner.

The robot is built by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center. https://t.co/0QGcEOeTpp pic.twitter.com/dVnYx2uZ5A
— The Humanoid Hub (@TheHumanoidHub) April 19, 2025

Most Robots Struggled to Complete the Race, With Some Malfunctioning Right Out of the Gate

Bloomberg reports that all the other humanoid robots took at least three hours to finish the race, and only four managed to cross the finish line before the four-hour cutoff. Some didn’t even make it past the starting area — one robot named Shennong tripped a human guide, crashed into a fence, and broke apart. Another, Little Giant, the shortest robot at just 30 inches tall, came to a stop mid-race as smoke began to rise from its head.

The event — the Beijing E-Town Humanoid Robot Half Marathon — featured robots built by Chinese companies and student teams. (Unitree’s G1 bot fell at the starting line, though the company said a client ran it without the correct algorithms.)

To qualify, each robot had to have a humanoid shape and run on two legs. They ran in a separate lane from the human participants, with staggered starts to avoid collisions. Teams were allowed to swap out batteries — Tiangong Ultra needed three changes — and could even replace robots mid-race, though doing so came with a time penalty.

X-Humanoid’s CTO, Tang Jiang, told Reuters, “I don’t want to boast, but I think no other robotics firms in the West have matched Tiangong’s sporting achievements.”

Leaders in Brazil’s agribusiness sector are increasingly prioritizing artificial intelligence (AI) as a key tool for enhancing the sector’s sustainability and competitiveness, especially in response to the challenges posed by climate change. PwC Brazil highlights this trend in the survey ‘The Reinvention of Brazilian Agribusiness.

Plans for AI Integration in the Next Year

The study reveals that 78% of agribusiness CEOs plan to invest in integrating AI with technological platforms within the next 12 months, surpassing the national average of 69% across all sectors. These leaders expect AI solutions to help tackle an increasingly uncertain environment, marked by extreme weather events.

Climate concerns are especially pressing in the agribusiness sector: 56% of sector leaders in Brazil regard climate change as their primary threat, a far higher figure than the national average of 21% and the global average of just 14%. According to Maurício Moraes, partner at PwC Brazil and head of the Agribusiness sector, this perception aligns with the challenges faced in the field. “Climate change is indeed the greatest short-term threat to the sector,” he states.

Additionally, 44% of agribusiness executives believe their businesses could become unviable within the next decade if they do not undergo significant transformations. The urgency for innovation is driven by the need for precise data. “Today, producers need more than just machines—they need intelligence. If the data generated isn’t analyzed, the company loses competitiveness,” emphasizes Moraes.

Sixty-one percent of leaders believe that AI will boost financial results in the short term, marking a significant increase from the 46% who believed the same in 2024. The maturity in AI usage has grown, and with it, the confidence in its return has also increased, adds Moraes.

Technological Barriers and the Need for Improved Weather Forecasting

While Brazil has made strides in adopting technology in the field, barriers remain, such as the lack of precision in weather forecasts. According to Moraes, developed countries have access to more advanced software, giving them a strategic advantage. An unexpected weather event can seriously impact a producer if it occurs during the input application window, for example.

Recent events, such as floods in Rio Grande do Sul and severe drought in the Amazon, have reinforced the perception of climate risk among agribusiness executives.

To foster innovation, 44% of agribusiness CEOs have already partnered with open innovation hubs or other organizations, surpassing the national average of 33%. These collaborations aim to develop practical solutions to existing problems, with a focus on efficiency and productivity.

AI’s Role in Improving Agricultural Practices

“Artificial intelligence, for example, allows for more precise fertilizer application, reducing costs and improving the effectiveness of crop management,” highlights Moraes.

Another challenge identified in the survey is the shortage of skilled labor. In agribusiness, 38% of leaders see this limitation as a serious threat—above the national average of 30% and the global average of 23%. “We need professionals who can collect, analyze, and interpret data to make better decisions in the field,” concludes the expert.

Kia unveiled its 2026 EV4 sedan at the New York International Auto Show on Wednesday, marking its first global electric sedan and targeting buyers seeking a more budget-friendly EV.

It’s uncertain whether U.S. consumers will embrace a sedan, and Kia isn’t fully banking on it just yet. The EV4 is already on sale in South Korea and is expected to arrive in Europe by the end of the year. U.S. sales are projected to begin in late 2025 or early 2026, according to a Kia spokesperson.

Kia targets budget-conscious EV buyers with the EV4

Affordability is the EV4’s main selling point. With decent range, a well-equipped interior, and modern tech, the EV4 could provide consumers with a compelling alternative. While official U.S. pricing hasn’t been announced, estimates suggest it may start around $35,000 — putting it in direct competition with the Tesla Model 3. Kia America VP of Sales Eric Watson confirmed that price range to TechCrunch.

Kia aims to make EVs accessible to all

Kia’s chief designer, Tom Kearns, said on Wednesday that most EVs tend to be priced on the higher end of the spectrum, but Kia’s mission is to make electric driving more accessible. “Our ultimate goal is to bring electrification to everyone,” he noted.

That’s the thinking behind the EV4 — a uniquely styled, tech-focused sedan that remains affordable despite offering many of the advanced features found in Kia’s premium EV6 and EV9 models.

Still, for U.S. buyers, that competitive pricing might be at risk. Former President Donald Trump’s proposed 25% tariff on imported vehicles could significantly raise the cost of the EV4, which Kia intends to manufacture in South Korea ahead of its U.S. debut in early 2026. With trade policies in flux, the final impact on pricing remains uncertain.

Kia’s VP of Sales, Eric Watson, mentioned that the company is considering shifting EV4 production to the U.S. Kia already produces the EV6 and EV9 at its West Point, Georgia facility, alongside battery partner SK On.

However, Kia America’s VP of Product Planning, Orth Hedrick, pointed out that even with U.S. production and domestic batteries, many components remain subject to tariffs. “It’s not great for business,” he said, adding that the company is hopeful for changes in policy over the summer.

Despite those hurdles, the EV4 offers plenty of appeal. The base model comes with a 58.3 kWh battery offering a range of 235 miles, while the “Wind” and “GT-Line” trims get a larger 81.4 kWh battery capable of up to 330 miles — on par with some of today’s leading EVs.

Streamlined design helps maximize range and functionality

Aerodynamics played a major role in achieving that range; the EV4 boasts a drag coefficient of 0.23, matching the Tesla Model 3. Both battery versions power a front-mounted 150 kW motor, and the car supports V2L4 tech, allowing users to power laptops or other electronics straight from the vehicle’s battery.

DC fast charging brings the battery from low to 80% in about 30 minutes, and Kia has placed the NACS charging port on the front passenger side for easier access.

Kia also highlighted the new i-Pedal 3.0 system, which enhances regenerative braking and lets drivers control deceleration using just the accelerator pedal — giving more freedom and efficiency in stop-and-go driving.

And then there’s the styling…

Kia aims to blend bold design with EV efficiency

Kearns explained that with the 2026 EV4, Kia saw a chance to break away from the typical EV design approach, which often puts efficiency above visual appeal. The goal was to create something that stood out—both in performance and personality.

And from up close, the EV4 definitely brings a unique style—think “business in the front, party in the back.” From the front, it features a low-slung nose, a long-tail silhouette, and a fastback roofline reminiscent of a classic sports car. In the rear, vertical taillights, a split roof spoiler, and a sculpted bumper lend the EV4 a futuristic, aerodynamic flair.

Inside, the EV4 keeps things sleek and modern. The minimalist, tech-forward cabin includes a two-spoke steering wheel, dynamic ambient lighting with 64 color options, and a floating interface that merges two 12.3-inch displays with a five-inch climate control screen. It comes equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless entertainment and navigation.

Like other Kia EVs, the EV4 supports over-the-air software updates, enabling users to unlock new features and personalize their experience—even adding themed cockpit visuals, like repping your favorite NBA team.

Tech conveniences extend to access and interaction. Drivers can unlock and start the EV4 using Kia’s digital key on their smartphones, while an AI-powered assistant helps manage in-car functions, plan routes, and respond to voice commands with natural language processing.

The EV4 also comes loaded with standard driver-assistance tech. Kia’s Highway Driving Assist adjusts speed to posted limits and helps maintain safe following distances. Other ADAS features include forward collision avoidance, lane-keeping, remote smart parking, driver attention alerts, and hands-on steering wheel detection.

In architecture, the principle of form follows function is foundational—but few buildings embody this concept as boldly as the Gambit Office, created by KWK Promes. Designed for a company specializing in pipe distribution, the building gives the striking impression that it’s constructed almost entirely from metal pipes.

A Vision Born from Budget and Identity

Situated in Gliwice, Poland, this unconventional structure is a standout example of memetic architecture. The idea emerged when KWK Promes was tasked with designing a cost-effective office for the Gambit company. Naturally, the team considered using the company’s own product—pipes—as a key exterior element, taking advantage of their affordability.

The Gambit Office’s unusual exterior will weather over time
Juliusz Sokołowski

Initially, the plan was to use actual pipes for the facade. However, due to their unsuitability for outdoor exposure and failure to meet fire regulations, the concept had to evolve. The architects carefully shaped raw aluminum sheets to resemble pipes and applied them over the building’s concrete frame. The entire project—from conception to completion—spanned 11 years.

We opted for raw aluminum sheeting, a more budget-friendly option that had proven reliable in our past projects like the OUTrial House, Unikato, and Konieczny’s Ark.We opted for raw aluminum sheeting, a more budget-friendly option that had proven reliable in our past projects like the OUTrial House, Unikato, and Konieczny’s Ark.”

Designing for Nature and Environment

To address acoustic concerns, the architects sealed the pipe-shaped panels at the building’s edges to prevent them from whistling in the wind. They left the remaining faux pipes open, allowing birds and insects to nest inside. Over time, the aluminum will naturally develop a low-maintenance patina that resembles concrete. Local zoning laws influenced the structure’s overall shape, which also echoes the steep rooftops of nearby residential buildings.

Inside, the Gambit Office offers 943 square meters (approximately 10,000 square feet) of usable space. A two-story section with angled walls houses the main office functions, while a lower adjoining area serves as a workshop. There’s also an unheated warehouse dedicated to pipe storage. The designers highlighted the raw concrete framework and filled the space with natural light using large windows and multiple skylights.

Northrop Grumman has written a new chapter in the history of space exploration. Its Mission Extension Vehicle 1 (MEV-1) successfully performed the first undocking between two commercial satellites in geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO), marking the beginning of a new era for commercial space operations.

Developed and operated by SpaceLogistics LLC, a Northrop Grumman subsidiary, MEV-1 had already made history on February 25, 2020, when it docked with the decommissioned Intelsat IS-901 communications satellite in GEO, 36,000 kilometers from Earth.

The Unlikely Retirement of Intelsat IS-901

Interestingly, the US$250 million satellite had no technical failures, even after 15 years of operation. They retired it simply because it ran out of fuel, which prevented it from maintaining its orbit and attitude control.

MEV-1

Instead of discarding a perfectly functioning piece of hardware, Northrop developed the MEV to extend the life of satellites no longer in service, including those that were never designed with docking mechanisms.

MEV-1 used a special probe to attach to the main engine nozzle of IS-901, took over propulsion and attitude control, and reactivated the satellite, putting it back to work.

Although this sounds straightforward, the operation involved complex engineering. Rendezvousing with a satellite in GEO using a robotic spacecraft requires matching orbits, inspecting the target, orienting for docking — a process that took three months. The spacecraft had to approach slowly and carefully, aligning precisely, extending manipulator arms to grab onto the satellite’s rocket nozzle in a delicate and intricate operation.

Not only did the 2020 docking succeed, but MEV-1 also demonstrated its ability to keep IS-901 in service for another five years. On April 9, 2025, before undocking, the vehicle moved the satellite to a graveyard orbit where it would not pose any risk to navigation.

MEV-1 is now heading toward another satellite for docking. Meanwhile, MEV-2 will remain docked to Intelsat 10-02 for another four years before moving on to its next mission.

Commercial Space Operations: A New Era

These missions represent more than just technological achievements; they signal the future of commercial space operations. Spacecraft like MEV are opening up a new market for satellite life-extension, recovery, and servicing, preventing satellites from becoming space debris.

Rendering of MEV-1 approaching IS-901
Northrop Grumman

In the future, engineers are likely to design new satellites to interact with service vehicles like the MEV. These next-generation MEVs will not only act as propulsion modules but will also refuel, repair, and even disassemble satellites to salvage components for reuse in new satellites, all without returning them to Earth.

As this technology evolves, space salvage laws may need to be updated accordingly.

A Vision for the Future of Space-Based Operations

“The pioneering technology that extended a satellite’s life is paving the way for an entire infrastructure of future on-orbit satellite servicing missions for a variety of customers,” said Rob Hauge, president of Space Logistics. “We continue to invest in next-generation capabilities to deliver the most advanced and technologically sophisticated servicing to sustain and enhance the value of existing and future space-based assets.”

Traditional stethoscopes can detect respiratory conditions, but they only provide insights during short examinations by healthcare professionals. A new wearable device, however, can offer a more comprehensive understanding by monitoring a patient’s breathing continuously over several days.

Introducing the Lung-Sound-Monitoring-Patch (LSMP)

The research team, led by postdoctoral scientist Kyoung-Ryul Lee from the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, developed the prototype Lung-Sound-Monitoring-Patch (LSMP), which functions similarly to a stethoscope but is designed to be worn on the skin for up to five days. The patch offers a prolonged and detailed respiratory analysis.

This small, millimeter-thin device includes several components: a unidirectional MEMS microphone that faces downward, a microcontroller unit, a Bluetooth LE module, a flexible printed circuit board, and a lithium-polymer battery. The design encloses these electronic components in a waterproof 3D-printed casing made from biocompatible resin.

Placed on the patient’s back (between the spine and a shoulder blade), the patch continuously records sounds produced by the lungs and airways as the person breathes. An AI-powered algorithm processes these sounds in real time, training on respiratory data from both healthy individuals and those with various respiratory conditions.

Wireless Data Transmission for Seamless Monitoring

The device wirelessly transmits the data to an iPhone running a dedicated app, which then analyzes, records, and displays the information. This process does not require any specialized healthcare professionals to be present during the monitoring, allowing patients to go about their daily routines while wearing the device.

The team has tested the LSMP on a diverse group of individuals so far, including two healthy adults, two infants with asthma, and five seniors with COPD. In every test, the device was able to distinguish between normal breathing and problematic respiratory sounds, such as various types of wheezing. It also accurately separated respiratory sounds from cardiac activity, which it can also monitor.

Looking ahead, the researchers plan to refine the device further, particularly by improving its ability to filter out unwanted background noise, such as that generated by body movements.
