54.
OpenAI says that it’s developing a tool to let creators better control how their content is used in generative AI.

 55.
Called Media Manager, the tool — once it’s released — will allow creators and content owners to identify their works to OpenAI and specify how they want those works to be included or excluded from AI research and training. The goal is to have the tool in place by 2025, OpenAI says, as the company works with creators, content owners and regulators toward a common standard.

 56.
“This will require cutting-edge machine learning research to build a first-ever tool of its kind to help us identify copyrighted text, images, audio and video across multiple sources and reflect creator preferences,” OpenAI writes in a blog post. “Over time, we plan to introduce additional choices and features.”

 57.
It’d seem Media Manager, whatever form it ultimately takes, is OpenAI’s response to growing criticism of its approach to developing AI, which relies heavily on scraping public data available from the web. Most recently, eight prominent U.S. newspapers including the Chicago Tribune and Orlando Sentinel sued OpenAI for IP infringement relating to the companies’ use of generative AI.

 58.
Generative AI models including OpenAI’s — the sorts of models that can analyze and generate text, images, videos and more — are trained on an enormous number of examples usually sourced from public sites and data sets. OpenAI and other generative AI vendors argue that fair use, the legal doctrine that allows for the use of copyrighted works to make a secondary creation as long as it’s transformative, shields their practice of scraping public data and using it for training without compensating or even crediting artists — but not everyone agrees.

 59.
OpenAI, in fact, recently argued that it would be impossible to create useful AI models absent copyrighted material.

 60.
But — to placate critics — OpenAI has allowed artists “opt out” of and remove their work from the data sets that the company uses to train its image-generating models. It’s also let website owners indicate via the robots.txt standard, which gives instructions about websites to web-crawling bots, whether content on their site can be scraped to AI model training.

 61.
These tools haven’t gone far enough, some content creators say. Artists have described the opt-out tool for images, which requires submitting an individual copy of each image to be removed along with a description, as onerous. And — as OpenAI itself acknowledges in the blog post today — OpenAI’s solutions don’t address scenarios in which creators’ works are quoted, remixed or reposted on platforms they don’t control.

 104.
With so much gear available, creating your own home studio can be challenging if you’re just getting into music production. To solve this problem, we’ll be talking about budget home recording with some key items to make your setup more versatile.

 105.
Regardless of what style of music you make or what your preferred discipline is within audio, there are a few essentials that every home studio needs.

 106.
A budget home recording setup:

 107.
Chances are you already own a laptop or desktop PC, but with a decent mic, an audio interface, studio monitors, and a pair of headphones, you’ll be well-equipped for recording at home.

 108.
Audio-Technica ATH-M40X

 109.
Without a doubt one of the best sets of budget headphones available, the ATH-M40X is a great option.

 110.
It’s a versatile closed-back design, perfect for monitoring during recording and plausible as a discrete and portable solution for editing, mixing, or post-production.

 316.
Apple today unveiled the M4 chip, its newest system on a chip for the 2024 iPad Pro lineup.

 317.

Apple said that the M4 chip features a new up-to-10-core CPU of up to four performance cores and six efficiency cores. The M4 chip comes in two different models: the 9-core CPU with 3 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores (for 256GB and 512GB ‌iPad Pro‌), and 10-core CPU with 4 performance cores and 6 efficiency cores (for 1TB and 2TB ‌iPad Pro‌).

 318.
The M4 chip is built with second-generation 3nm technology and features a new display engine. It delivers up to 50% faster CPU performance than the M2 in the previous ‌‌iPad Pro‌‌ and four-times faster rendering performance.

 319.
For performance in gaming, the M4 chip features Dynamic Caching that helps significantly increases performance for demanding pro apps and games. It also enables hardware-accelerated ray tracing on iPad for the first time.

 320.
Finally, the M4 includes a Neural Engine that fuels accelerated AI workloads. Apple mentioned that this is the company’s most powerful Neural Engine ever, capable of 38 trillion operations per second and helping users accomplish AI tasks quickly on the ‌iPad Pro‌.

 392.

 393.
At its iPad event today, Apple announced a set of new iPad Pro tablets, powered by its new M4 chips, the fourth generation of its custom SoCs.

 394.
The new chips feature a new display engine, as well as a significantly updated CPU and GPU cores. The base M4 chips come with ten CPU and ten GPU cores.

 395.

 396.

 397.

 398.
Apple claims that the new CPU is 50% faster than the M2 chips which powered the last generation of iPad Pros, while the GPU will offer a 4x increase in rendering performance, all while still offering the same performance per Watt as the M3. Apple stressed that the new GPU architecture features dynamic caching, hardware-accelerated mesh shading and ray tracing, something that’s a first for the iPad.

 399.
This is 2024, so Apple also now plays up the neural engine in its chips even more and highlights that it has long added those to its SoCs while the PC market is only now catching up. That’s fair, but there also weren’t all that many use cases for these chips before. The new neural engine in the M4 offers a performance of up to 38 trillion operations per second.

 400.

 401.
Apple first announced the 3-nanometer M3 series last October, when it announced the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max. The standard M3 featured a 10-core GPU and 8-core CPU, while the M3 Pro comes with a 12-core CPU and 18-core GPU. The high-end M3 Max (there’s no Ultra model yet) features a 16-core CPU and 40-core GPU.

 402.
Typically, Apple brought its newest chips to its Pro-series laptops first and then used the last generation for its tablets. It’s taking a bit of a different approach here by debuting the M4 in the iPad Pro. If I had to guess, part of this is due to Qualcomm’s latest Arm-based Snapdragon chips being on their way to PCs — and while we haven’t seen the full benchmarks for these yet, it looks like they could put some pressure on Apple Silicon’s lead, especially as Microsoft continues to invest in Windows an Arm.

 659.

 660.

 661.
While taking a long road trip across the U.S. years ago, Sanish Mondkar realized that there were stark, problematic disconnects between employers and the staff they employ.

 662.
To critics of late-stage capitalism, that might sound like an obvious observation. But Mondkar, who has a master’s in computer science from Cornell, says that seeing the issues up close made all the difference.

 663.
“Traveling from town to town, I couldn’t help but notice the perpetual ‘for hire’ signs plastering the windows of countless labor-intensive businesses such as retailers and restaurants,” he said. “Simultaneously, I saw employees frequently changing jobs, yet struggling to make a living wage. This disparity between employers’ needs and workers’ realities struck a chord with me.”

 664.
Inspired by this experience, as well as stints at Ariba as EVP and chief product officer at SAP, Mondkar set out to build a startup that helps companies manage their workforces — particularly contract and gig workforces. His venture, Legion, today announced it raised $50 million in funding led by Riverwood Capital with participation from Norwest, Stripes, Webb Investment Network and XYZ.

 665.
“My objective was to rebuild the enterprise category of workforce management in order to maximize labor efficiency for the businesses and deliver value to the workers simultaneously,” Mondkar said. “I wanted to differentiate the company itself with a focus on intelligent automation of WFM and the employee value proposition.”

 666.
Legion is designed to support customers — employers like Cinemark, Dollar General, Five Below and Panda Express — in managing their hourly staff by automating certain decisions, like how much labor to deploy where and when to schedule workers. Taking into account demand forecasting, labor optimization and the preferences of employees, Legion’s platform generates work schedules.

 667.
Employees whose companies are on Legion can use its mobile app to request how they want to work and set their preferred hours. Legion’s algorithm then tries to match the preferences of workers with the needs of the business.

 668.

 669.
Legion also incorporates performance management tools and a rewards program of sorts.

 670.

 671.
“We use algorithms trained on a blend of customer data and third-party data, which Legion aggregates from its partners,” Mondkar said. “This integration allows for forecasts for planning and resource allocation.”

 672.
In addition to the base scheduling features, Legion — very on trend — is leaning into generative AI with a tool called Copilot (not to be confused with Microsoft Copilot). Copilot answers questions about work informed by an organization’s employee handbook, labor standards and training content. In the coming months, Copilot will gain the ability to summarize work schedules and fulfill requests to add or delete shifts or change staffer assignments.

 673.
“In order to attract and retain staff, companies employing hourly labor must emulate gig-like flexibility,” Mondkar said. “Legion provides this with the intelligent automation of scheduling. Managers can match staff to projected demand, closing the gap between the needs of employees and the needs of the business.”

 674.
That’s all well and fine, but two concerning things stand out to me about Legion: its privacy policy and earned wage access (EWA) program.

 675.
Legion says it stores customer data for seven years by default — a long time by any measure. More concerningly, the data includes personally identifiable information like workers’ first and last names, email and home addresses, ages, photos and work preferences. Big yikes.

 676.
Legion says the data is necessary to “facilitate scheduling in compliance with labor regulations,” and that users can request that their data be deleted at any time. But I question the ease of the deletion process — and just how transparent Legion is about its data retention policies to customers.

 677.
My other gripe with Legion is InstantPay, Legion’s EWA program, which lets employees access a portion of their earned wages ahead of their scheduled paydays. Legion charges workers $2.99 for instant earned wage transfers, while next-day transfers are free — that might not sound like very much, but it can add up for a low-income worker. Legion pitches this as a benefit for hourly workers that gives them “greater flexibility” and “control” over their finances, as well as a business retention tool. But EWA programs are under scrutiny from policymakers, consumer rights advocates and employers. Legion’s mobile app.

 678.
Some consumer groups argue that EWA programs should be classified as loans under the U.S. Truth in Lending Act, which provides protections such as requiring lenders to give advance notice before increasing certain charges. These groups say EWA programs can force users into overdraft while effectively levying interest through fees.

 679.

 680.

 681.
In addition, it’s not clear whether EWA programs are a net win for employers. Walmart recently tried to combat attrition by giving hourly staff access to wages early. Instead, it found that employees using EWA tended to quit faster.

 682.

 683.

 684.
Setting aside my niggles with Legion, the company appears to be growing robustly despite competition from companies like Ceridian’s Dayforce, Quinyx, and UKG, with revenue and bookings climbing 55% and 125%, respectively, in the past year. That’s all the more impressive considering that funding for HR tech startups fell to a three-year low last year — $3.3 billion, down from $10.5 billion in 2021 — after a flurry of interests from VCs.

 685.
Legion, which makes money by charging subscriptions calculated by the number of hourly workers a company employs, plans to put its recently-raised capital toward growing its 200-staffer workforce with a focus on expanding R&D and customer-facing teams and launching go-to-market efforts in Europe.

 686.
To date, Legion’s raised $145 million.

 687.
“Legion will use our funds to fuel continued innovations in workforce management, including deep investments in R&D,” Mondkar said. “Legion has been relatively insulated from the broader tech slowdown, thanks to our focus on labor-intensive industries. This strategic alignment positions us well to navigate any potential economic headwinds effectively.”

 781.
Like some of the Electro-Voice mics of that era, the D19 design used ventilated slots along its body to reduce the proximity effect. This allows you to use the WA-19 closer to loud sources like drums and guitar amps without the boominess.

 803.
When you’re using low-output mics like dynamics and ribbons, an inline mic preamp like the new Warm Lifter is the perfect tool to optimize your gain. Simply plug it in and activate the 48V phantom power on your audio interface, and you have 26dB of extra discrete gain.

 818.
The Warm Lifter uses a balanced signal path and is equipped with a JFET input. This means low-noise gain boosting of your favourite mics. What’s more, at $149 MSRP it’s a worthy addition to any home recording setup.

 820.
We’ve been working for a while to expand our mic lineup to include an iconic ribbon and dynamic microphone, so this is a very exciting launch for us. The WA-44 has long been a dream of ours to offer but it took time to source the right vintage-correct ribbon and magnet to be able to offer this classic sound at such an affordable price. The WA-19 revives a studio classic that may be lesser known, but brings back a unique tone in the world of dynamic mics. The original was used to capture overheads, drums, and vocals for the Beatles and we’ve been stunned at the rich top-end detail we’ve been able to capture with the WA-19 compared to the standard studio dynamic mics. And, of course, we wanted to ensure that if you didn’t have a high-quality preamp, you could get powerfully clean gain when using a ribbon or low-output dynamic mic, so we developed an inline lifter preamp with added pro features.

 873.
Apple canceled its Apple Car project in February 2024 and stopped all internal work on autonomous, electric vehicles. But the company still has its sights set on impacting the EV market, and Rivian could be the avenue for its ambitions, according to rumors out of Taiwan.

 874.

 875.
Apple canceled its “Project Titan” EV project earlier this year.

 876.
DigiTimes reports that Apple is “studying the possibility” of a partnership with Rivian, although this seems to be based on speculation within the supply chain, and what form such a collab would take remains a mystery.

 877.
The report notes that a sluggish EV market has left many startups struggling for survival, yet Rivian’s delivery vehicle partnership with Amazon remains strong, and could even factor into Apple’s interest. From the report:

 878.

 879.
“A partnership with Rivian might also indirectly involve Amazon, which could open the door to collaboration between Apple and Amazon in generative AI, the sources said.”

 880.

 881.
The report links Apple’s generative AI ambitions with the rumor, tying it to innovations within the EV space such as AI smart voice and driving assistance. It’s all very speculative.

 882.
Some sort of basic CarPlay integration could be fueling the chatter, and there could be nothing more behind it. It’s worth noting that Rivian is also under market pressure to perform during the mass production phase of its latest fleet of midsize R2 and R3 cars, so this rumor could just be part of an attempt to revive shareholder interest. On that basis, it would be wise to quell expectations until other reports corroborate the claim.

 955.
Bias in AI image generators is a well-studied and well-reported phenomenon, but consumer tools continue to exhibit glaring cultural biases. The latest culprit in this area is Meta’s AI chatbot, which, for some reason, really wants to add turbans to any image of an Indian man.

 956.
The company rolled out Meta AI in more than a dozen countries earlier this month across WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. However, the company has rolled out Meta AI to select users in India, one of the biggest markets around the world.

 957.
TechCrunch looks at various culture-specific queries as part of our AI testing process, by which we found out, for instance, that Meta is blocking election-related queries in India because of the country’s ongoing general elections. But Imagine, Meta AI’s new image generator, also displayed a peculiar predisposition to generating Indian men wearing a turban, among other biases.

 958.
When we tested different prompts and generated more than 50 images to test various scenarios, and they’re all here minus a couple (like “a German driver”) we did to see how the system represented different cultures. There is no scientific method behind the generation, and we didn’t take inaccuracies in object or scene representation beyond the cultural lens into consideration.

 959.
There are a lot of men in India who wear a turban, but the ratio is not nearly as high as Meta AI’s tool would suggest. In India’s capital, Delhi, you would see one in 15 men wearing a turban at most. However, in images generates Meta’s AI, roughly 3-4 out of 5 images representing Indian males would be wearing a turban.

 960.
We started with the prompt “An Indian walking on the street,” and all the images were of men wearing turbans.

 961.
 962.
Next, we tried generating images with prompts like “An Indian man,” “An Indian man playing chess,” “An Indian man cooking,” and An Indian man swimming.” Meta AI generated only one image of a man without a turban.

 963.
 964.

 965.
Even with the non-gendered prompts, Meta AI didn’t display much diversity in terms of gender and cultural differences. We tried prompts with different professions and settings, including an architect, a politician, a badminton player, an archer, a writer, a painter, a doctor, a teacher, a balloon seller, and a sculptor.

 966.
 967.
As you can see, despite the diversity in settings and clothing, all the men were generated wearing turbans. Again, while turbans are common in any job or region, it’s strange for Meta AI to consider them so ubiquitous.

 968.
We generated images of an Indian photographer, and most of them are using an outdated camera, except in one image where a monkey also somehow has a DSLR.

 969.
 970.
We also generated images of an Indian driver. And until we added the word “dapper,” the image generation algorithm showed hints of class bias.

 971.
 972.

 973.
We also tried generating two images with similar prompts. Here are some examples: An Indian coder in an office.

 974.
 975.
An Indian man in a field operating a tractor.

 976.

 977.
Two Indian men sitting next to each other:

 978.
 979.
Additionally, we tried generating a collage of images with prompts, such as an Indian man with different hairstyles. This seemed to produce the diversity we expected.

 980.
 981.
Meta AI’s Imagine also has a perplexing habit of generating one kind of image for similar prompts. For instance, it constantly generated an image of an old-school Indian house with vibrant colors, wooden columns, and styled roofs. A quick Google image search will tell you this is not the case with majority of Indian houses.

 982.
 983.
Another prompt we tried was “Indian content creator,” and it generated an image of a female creator repeatedly. In the gallery bellow, we have included images with content creator on a beach, a hill, mountain, a zoo, a restaurant, and a shoe store.

 984.
 985.
Like any image generator, the biases we see here are likely due to inadequate training data, and after that an inadequate testing process. While you can’t test for all possible outcomes, common stereotypes ought to be easy to spot. Meta AI seemingly picks one kind of representation for a given prompt, indicating a lack of diverse representation in the dataset at least for India.

 986.
In response to questions TechCrunch sent to Meta about training data an biases, the company said it is working on making its generative AI tech better, but didn’t provide much detail about the process.

 987.
“This is new technology and it may not always return the response we intend, which is the same for all generative AI systems. Since we launched, we’ve constantly released updates and improvements to our models and we’re continuing to work on making them better,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

 988.
Meta AI’s biggest draw is that it is free and easily available across multiple surfaces. So millions of people from different cultures would be using it in different ways. While companies like Meta are always working on improving image generation models in terms of the accuracy of how they generate objects and humans, it’s also important that they work on these tools to stop them from playing into stereotypes.

 989.
Meta will likely want creators and users to use this tool to post content on its platforms. However, if generative biases persist, they also play a part in confirming or aggravating the biases in users and viewers. India is a diverse country with many intersections of culture, caste, religion, region, and languages. Companies working on AI tools will need to be better at representing different people.
