The Kansong Art Museum — recognized as Korea’s oldest private cultural institution with a historic collection of over 16,000 artifacts, including an array of state-designated national treasures — is reopening its Bohwagak venue in Seongbuk District, northeastern Seoul, in May following a 19-month renovation.This marks the institution’s official return to full operations after a decade-long closure due to challenges in accommodating visitors in its aging facility.The museum was founded in 1938 by Chun Hyung-pil (1906–62), an affluent philanthropist known by the pen name Kansong who dedicated his fortune to collecting and preserving the country’s relics during the 1910–45 Japanese colonial era. Since 1971, it has hosted biannual exhibitions of its artifacts free of charge. Each show lasted only two weeks due to space constraints and displaying conditions. As a result, every spring and autumn, throngs of visitors would form long lines outside the building, eager to catch a glimpse of treasures such as the 15th-century Hangeul handbook called “Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon” and Joseon-era painter Shin Yun-bok’s iconic “Portrait of a Beauty.”Then came 2014, when its old and dated venue went dormant, with all subsequent shows for the next five years being temporarily displayed at Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in central Seoul instead.
In 2022, the Kansong Art Museum unveiled its newly built storage space and conservation laboratory as part of its vision to start a new chapter with more up-to-date operations. It also announced plans to extensively renovate the original Bohwagak building, aiming to transform it into a more accessible and modern exhibition hall. To commemorate the grand reopening, the archival show, “Bohwagak 1938,” has been put on view, tracing the founding history of the museum through a never-before-seen set of blueprints and Chun’s handwritten ledgers.Discovered among the stacks of enveloped documents during the building’s restoration, the blueprints — some of the oldest surviving of their kind in the country — were drawn and designed by Korea’s first-generation architect Park Kil-yong (1898–1943).Displayed in rows of vitrines on the first floor, these documents offer insights into every aspect of the structure envisioned 86 years ago, including its off-white, Bauhaus-style facade with a whimsically asymmetrical touch. Matthew Bourne, a British choreographer famous for his unconventional and innovative reimaginings of classical ballet works, will bring “Romeo and Juliet” to surprise Korean fans. It has been five years since his company last performed “Swan Lake” in Korea in 2019.Bourne’s ballet, premiered in 2019 by New Adventures, explores themes of love, loss and identity. His modern rendition of Shakespeare’s classic is set in the Verona Institute — a fictional place where young people are incarcerated. Within the stark walls of the institute segregating males and females, Romeo, a rebellious newcomer, and Juliet, a brilliant teen yearning for freedom, find solace in each other despite the watchful eyes of the authorities. He said, as most stories he reinterprets are very much loved, he tries to give people all the feelings and events that they expect from that story but just differently. His past productions, including the all-male “Swan Lake” and the vampire-inspired “Sleeping Beauty,” have garnered critical acclaim for their innovative storytelling and captivating performances.“I don’t see the point of just doing tame versions of things all the time. It’s dull for the audiences too. I think audiences want to be challenged a little and to have some surprises along the way,” Bourne said during a recent email interview with The Korea Times, raising expectations for his upcoming show.”Romeo and Juliet” has been done by taking the Shakespeare out of Shakespeare in a dance production, he says. “As I’m working in non-verbal storytelling, the Shakespeare in a way has already gone. I mean the words of Shakespeare, the story is still there somewhat, but it did make me very brave about changing the piece into something that was very much this new adventures version of ‘Romeo and Juliet.'”
Based on Sergei Prokofiev’s (1891-1953) incredible ballet score, he created a project that focused on both young dancers and young creatives in other fields. “To make this ultimate first-love story about young people, listening to what they had to say and to be inspired by their talents and their particular viewpoint. ‘Romeo and Juliet’ [is] for, and about, a new generation,” he said.To this end, Bourne cast mostly young dancers at the start of their careers. “I wanted to work with young people and to really listen to what was important to them. I wanted that fresh approach and the energy and insight into today’s world that only young people can bring.” His work explores issues faced by the younger generation, such as drug trauma, depression, abuse and sexual identity, which may come as another big surprise for conventional ballet fans.“Some people can be surprised to see these issues portrayed in a dance production. Subjects such as these are regularly explored in film, TV drama and plays. It’s true that, at times, our Romeo and Juliet is not an easy watch, particularly around Juliet’s harrowing story, but I do feel that it’s important to face the realities of the story we are telling and its tragic outcome,” he said, adding that he is proud that they could tackle these issues in the show.”It will come as no surprise that our story does not end well. It is ugly, bloody, messy and raw, but no less gut-wrenchingly heart-breaking than any version of this story, perhaps even more so.”The choreographer’s favorite scene is the “balcony duet” which includes the “longest-ever kiss” as it is the first moment his characters are truly free to express their genuine selves.“When young people fall in love, it is very lusty and they cannot keep their hands off each other. I wanted to capture that youthful excitement so that the audiences remember what it was like for them as teenagers to fall in love for the first time,” he said.“It’s awkward at times, uninhibited, full of the excitement of exploration and discovery. Rather than the usual sweet peck on the cheek or lips, we set ourselves the choreographically challenging task of creating the longest ever continuous kiss in dance history! The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) is increasing pressure on President Yoon Suk Yeol after a meeting between Yoon and DPK Chairman Lee Jae-myung on Monday further underscored their differing stances on key political issues.The DPK, now in control of the National Assembly and poised to expand its majority in the next (22nd) Assembly, is preparing to unilaterally pass contentious bills that Lee urged the president to accept during their 135-minute meeting.As bills pending at the current Assembly will be automatically scrapped when it closes on May 29, the DPK is pushing to open a plenary session in May to pass them. Meanwhile, the ruling People Power Party (PPP), which opposes those bills, remains reluctant.”The Assembly must hold a plenary session on Thursday and pass a bill to launch a special counsel probe into allegations surrounding the death of Marine Cpl. Chae Su-geun and a bill for a special act on home leasing fraud cases,” DPK floor leader Rep. Hong Ihk-pyo said during a party meeting Tuesday.”Failing to pass those bills would be seen as a shameful outcome for the current 21st Assembly in the eyes of the public,” Hong added.The ruling and the opposition blocs have locked horns over the two bills Hong mentioned.The DPK has been advocating for a special counsel probe into Chae’s case amid suspicions that the Yoon administration influenced the military’s investigation into the death of the Marine. There are concerns that the administration sought to downplay the responsibilities of ranking military officers involved in the incident, which occurred last year during a search-and-rescue operation after floods.Yoon’s appointment of then-Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup as ambassador to Australia in early April further amplified speculation that the president tried to help him avoid being investigated.The special act on home leasing fraud cases aims to assist victims who have not received their lease deposits back under Korea’s home renting system known as “jeonse.” In this arrangement, tenants pay a lump sum refundable deposit for the term of the contract instead of monthly rent.The ruling bloc opposes the act because it requires the government to initially return the deposits to the victims using funds from the state-run Korea Housing and Urban Guarantee Corp., which would then be recovered from dishonest landlords. If the bill is passed, it would necessitate an additional expenditure of 3 to 4 trillion won ($2.18 billion to $2.9 billion).
In his opening remarks during Monday’s meeting, the DPK chairman urged the president to accept bills passed by the Assembly, including those related to Chae’s case, and to refrain from exercising presidential veto power over them. However, the president did not respond to those requests, and the topics were not discussed further at the meeting.”Apart from the special counsel probe bill, there are other pending bills at the Assembly that have to do with the public’s livelihood,” Hong said. “By all means, we will hold the Assembly’s plenary session in May. As the law states and the public orders, the government and the ruling party should cooperate to convene a plenary session.”Even after the current Assembly concludes, the DPK plans to continue pressuring Yoon in the next Assembly by reintroducing nine bills he rejected over the past two years of his presidency. One of those bills includes a special counsel probe into stock manipulation allegations involving the first lady, Kim Keon Hee.Rep. Jin Sung-joon, the DPK’s chief policymaker who accompanied Lee to the meeting, also slammed the president, saying Yoon “turned a deaf ear” to the party’s requests.”The DPK will continue persuading the president and the government and raise its voice,” Jin said. “However, we will not stop there. We will steadily push forward with our legislative and policy plans aimed at restoring the public’s livelihood and establishing a more righteous nation as we planned.”Political analysts suggest that the DPK’s assertive push reflects its confidence in having the upper hand over the ruling bloc. In the top of the third, Lee Jae-won grounded out to third base and Jung Eun-won singled, but Choi In-ho grounded out to second base and Peraza grounded out to end the inning. In the bottom of the third, Chun struck out, Kang grounded out to first baseman Baek-ho, and Rojas flied out to center field to end the inning.
Hanwha started the fourth inning with a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but Chae Eun-sung grounded out to third, Ahn Chi-hong grounded out to third, and Hwang Young-mook grounded out to the pitcher.
KT, on the other hand, scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull away from Hanwha. With the bases loaded and no outs after Moon Sang-chul led off with a single to left, Jang Sung-woo took a two-pitch, 144-kilometer/h fastball from Peña and launched it over the left field wall. As well as stopping their rivals from challenging for the title, Spurs are also desperate for three points in this North London derby as they look to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

German giants Bayern Munich appear to be on the hunt for center back reinforcements. In particular, the Bavarians have reportedly set their sights on defender Jonatan Tah, who helped Bayer Leverkusen to their first title since 1904 this season.

The Lotte Giants of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) won 6-3 against the SSG Landers at Sajik Stadium in Busan on Friday. The Giants improved to 8-17-1 on the season after bouncing back from an upset loss the day before. It was difficult to get back on track, but they are slowly rebounding.
On this day, Lotte had a lot of pressure on starter Park Se-woong. With most of their top pitchers, including Choi Jun-yong and Kim Sang-soo, depleted the day before, he had to pitch as many innings as possible.
And Park was up to the task. Park threw 40 fastballs, 34 sliders, 24 curveballs, and eight forkballs, topping out at 149 mph on the day, effectively shutting down SSG hitters.

He gave up a single to Heredia with one out in the fourth, but retired the next two batters. He retired the next seven batters in a row until the bottom of the sixth inning.
However, in the bottom of the sixth, he gave up back-to-back singles. After giving up a double to Han Yoo-seom, he gave up back-to-back singles to Heredia and Park Sung-hwan. Two runs scored. It was 4-2.
The 4-2 lead remained intact as the bats failed to capitalize on a bases-loaded opportunity in the bottom of the sixth. Park Se-woong, who threw 88 pitches in the sixth inning, took the mound in the seventh.
Lee Ji-young led off with a single to left field. However, he gave up a walk to Choi Kyung-mo. Choi Ji-hoon flied out to center field, but gave up another single to Choo Shin-soo, putting runners on first and second with no outs. He was unable to close out the seventh and handed the ball over to Jeon Mir. Jeon gave up a big hit to Choi Jung, but he got out of the jam when he flied out to center field. Jeon secured the win for Park Se-woong.
After the game, Park said he could feel the victory coming. “Yesterday, the bullpen made a tough <a href="https://www.majortotosite.top" title="토토사이트">토토사이트</a> decision and I thought it was important for the starting pitcher to take the mound with a sense of responsibility,” Park said.
