Nvidia, the California-based semiconductor giant, is on the brink of surpassing Apple to become the world’s second-most valuable company, according to latest market closing price. The rally in its stock price, which has lasted for over a year now, is all thanks to the AI boom brought about by the likes of OpenAI, Google and others. Nvidia enjoys a virtual monopoly when it comes to AI chips, that too at a time when demand seems to be far outstripping supply.

Nvidia has played a key role as the provider of high-end chips essential for AI applications like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which rely heavily on Nvidia’s high-end GPUs for their processing power. For those who need a refresher, unlike CPUs (Central Processing Units) designed for general-purpose tasks, GPUs excel at handling the massive amount of parallel processing required by AI algorithms. This parallel processing allows AI applications to analyze vast datasets and learn from them significantly faster. A lot of cutting-edge AI projects are heavily reliant upon Nvidia’s high-end GPUs, and the company’s shift in focus from gaming to AI has paid off handsomely (the demand for chips often exceeding the supply).

It is thus of no surprise that Nvidia’s stock has nearly tripled in value over the past year, reaching a staggering $2.72 trillion market capitalization (just 11% shy of Microsoft’s market capitalization of $3.2 trillion). So far, the company has already surpassed other tech giants like Amazon, Google-parent Alphabet, and Saudi Aramco in market cap, and analysts believe that Nvidia could soon reach a $3 trillion valuation, driven by its dominance in the semiconductor market.

In fact, the chipmaker holds the distinction of achieving the fastest ascent from a $1 trillion to a $2 trillion market capitalization, surpassing established tech giants like Amazon and Google. The overall market sentiment towards Nvidia is overwhelmingly bullish. This is reflected in the derivatives market, where the GraniteShares 2x Long NVDA Daily ETF, which tracks Nvidia’s daily percentage change with double leverage, has become the largest single-stock ETF. Nvidia’s shares are currently priced at $1,076.06 after clocking a rise over the past five days.

In stark contrast, Apple, which once held the top spot in market valuation, has seen its position challenged. Earlier this year, Apple ceded its No. 1 spot to Microsoft, leaving it with a valuation of $2.93 trillion. Its flagship iPhone product line faces stiff competition in China, and the company’s overall innovation seems to be plateauing. This has opened a window for Nvidia to seize a leadership position in the tech landscape. The fact that Apple has been somewhat late to the AI race, and fallen behind the likes of Microsoft, Google and Amazon, is likely to be another contributing factor.

California-headquartered payments giant Stripe has encountered a temporary roadblock in its India ambitions. The company has now announced a shift to an “invite-only” model for new account sign-ups in India, citing the country’s evolving regulatory landscape (particularly the Know Your Customer (KYC) norms) for payment aggregators.

“We’ve made the tough decision to temporarily offer our services by invite only in India. This means that businesses from India will not be able to sign up for a new Stripe account through our website, and will instead need to request an invite. We will only be able to support a select number of businesses, with a focus on international expansion, for the time being,” the US-based fintech major said in a statement on its website.

As mentioned earlier, at the heart of Stripe’s decision lies the challenge of being in compliance with India’s stringent KYC norms, which are mandated by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The new “invite-only” policy prioritizes two key segments: existing Stripe account holders in India and new businesses with a strong focus on international expansion. Existing users can breathe a sigh of relief, as their accounts and access to Stripe’s services remain unaffected. For new Indian businesses seeking to join the platform, they face a roadblock since new sign-ups are paused, which means that they will need to explore alternative payment aggregators (PA) to facilitate online transactions. Fortunately, India boasts a robust fintech landscape with numerous payment aggregators offering similar services. These PAs have likely already adapted their onboarding processes to comply with the stricter KYC requirements, allowing businesses to integrate their services relatively quickly.

Nitesh Singhal, founder of fintech consultancy Aryaa Advisors, pointed out the economic logic behind Stripe’s move. “Cross-border payments have higher margins than domestic payments. India domestic is a high-risk, low-reward business, and KYC lacunas can take down companies. Stripe will do well to leverage their strengths in international acquiring and only power the Indian businesses focusing on the international market,” he said.

Since December 2023, Stripe had already started slowing down the onboarding of new users. Nonetheless, earlier this year, the company received approval from the RBI to operate as a payment aggregator (PA) in the country, allowing it to facilitate international payments in over 135 foreign currencies. “We remain strongly committed to India and are working to build out the infrastructure to be able to support more users by the second half of 2025,” Stripe said.

This development comes at a time when Stripe has aspirations to become a significant player in the Payment Aggregator – Cross Border (PA-CB) sector, especially with new cross-border trade regulations coming into effect. Despite the temporary restriction, however, the fintech giant has plans to reopen its services to a broader audience by the second half of 2025, following necessary infrastructure upgrades. This will allow it to focus on enhancing its systems to comply with India’s regulatory framework. Stripe has also introduced additional verification steps for existing users, including the verification of payout bank accounts and proof of business for sole proprietorship firms. These measures are intended to ensure compliance with RBI’s guidelines.

In the last three months, OpenAI has disrupted five covert influence operations (IO) that attempted to exploit the company’s models for deceptive activities online. As of May 2024, these campaigns have not shown a substantial increase in audience engagement or reach due to OpenAI’s services.

OpenAI claims its commitment to designing AI models with safety in mind has often thwarted the threat actors’ attempts to generate desired content. Additionally, the company says AI tools have enhanced the efficiency of OpenAI’s investigations.

Detailed threat reporting by distribution platforms and the open-source community has significantly contributed to combating IO. OpenAI is sharing these findings to promote information sharing and best practices among the broader community of stakeholders.

Disrupting covert IO

In the past three months, OpenAI disrupted several IO operations using its models for various tasks, such as generating short comments, creating fake social media profiles, conducting open-source research, debugging simple code, and translating texts.

Specific operations disrupted include:

Bad Grammar: A previously unreported operation from Russia targeting Ukraine, Moldova, the Baltic States, and the US. This group used OpenAI’s models to debug code for running a Telegram bot and to create political comments in Russian and English, posted on Telegram.

Doppelganger: Another Russian operation generating comments in multiple languages on platforms like X and 9GAG, translating and editing articles, generating headlines, and converting news articles into Facebook posts.

Spamouflage: A Chinese network using OpenAI’s models for public social media activity research, generating texts in several languages, and debugging code for managing databases and websites.

International Union of Virtual Media (IUVM): An Iranian operation generating and translating long-form articles, headlines, and website tags, published on a linked website.

Zero Zeno: A commercial company in Israel, with operations generating articles and comments posted across multiple platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, X, and affiliated websites.

The content posted by these operations focused on various issues, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Gaza conflict, Indian elections, European and US politics, and criticisms of the Chinese government.

Despite these efforts, none of these operations showed a significant increase in audience engagement due to OpenAI’s models. Using Brookings’ Breakout Scale – which assesses the impact of covert IO – none of the five operations scored higher than a 2, indicating activity on multiple platforms but no breakout into authentic communities.

Attacker trends

Investigations into these influence operations revealed several trends:

Content generation: Threat actors used OpenAI’s services to generate large volumes of text with fewer language errors than human operators could achieve alone.

Mixing old and new: AI was used alongside traditional formats, such as manually written texts or copied memes.

Faking engagement: Some networks generated replies to their own posts to create the appearance of engagement, although none managed to attract authentic engagement.

Productivity gains: Threat actors used AI to enhance productivity, summarising social media posts and debugging code.

Defensive trends

OpenAI’s investigations benefited from industry sharing and open-source research. Defensive measures include:

Defensive design: OpenAI’s safety systems imposed friction on threat actors, often preventing them from generating the desired content.

AI-enhanced investigation: AI-powered tools improved the efficiency of detection and analysis, reducing investigation times from weeks or months to days.

Distribution matters: IO content, like traditional content, must be distributed effectively to reach an audience. Despite their efforts, none of the disrupted operations managed substantial engagement.

Importance of industry sharing: Sharing threat indicators with industry peers increased the impact of OpenAI’s disruptions. The company benefited from years of open-source analysis by the wider research community.

The human element: Despite using AI, threat actors were prone to human error, such as publishing refusal messages from OpenAI’s models on their social media and websites.

OpenAI says it remains dedicated to developing safe and responsible AI. This involves designing models with safety in mind and proactively intervening against malicious use.

While admitting that detecting and disrupting multi-platform abuses like covert influence operations is challenging, OpenAI claims it’s committed to mitigating the dangers.

AI models are rapidly evolving, outpacing hardware capabilities, which presents an opportunity for Arm to innovate across the compute stack.

Recently, Arm unveiled new chip blueprints and software tools aimed at enhancing smartphones’ ability to handle AI tasks more efficiently. But they didn’t stop there – Arm also implemented changes to how they deliver these blueprints, potentially accelerating adoption.

Arm is evolving its solution offerings to maximise the benefits of leading process nodes. They announced the Arm Compute Subsystems (CSS) for Client, their latest cutting-edge compute solution tailored for AI applications in smartphones and PCs.

This CSS for Client promises a significant performance leap – we’re talking over 30% increased compute and graphics performance, along with an impressive 59% faster AI inference for AI, machine learning, and computer vision workloads.

While Arm’s technology powered the smartphone revolution, it’s also gaining traction in PCs and data centres, where energy efficiency is prized. Though smartphones remain Arm’s biggest market, supplying IP to rivals like Apple, Qualcomm, and MediaTek, the company is expanding its offerings.

They’ve launched new CPU designs optimised for AI workloads and new GPUs, as well as software tools to ease the development of chatbots and other AI apps on Arm chips.

But the real gamechanger is how these products are delivered. Historically, Arm provided specs or abstract designs that chipmakers had to translate into physical blueprints – an immense challenge arranging billions of transistors.

For this latest offering, Arm collaborated with Samsung and TSMC to provide physical chip blueprints ready for manufacturing, which was a huge time saver.

Samsung’s Jongwook Kye praised the partnership, stating their 3nm process combined with Arm’s CPU solutions meets soaring demand for generative AI in mobiles through “early and tight collaboration” in the areas of DTCO and PPA maximisation for an on-time silicon delivery that hit performance and efficiency demands.

TSMC’s head of the ecosystem and alliance management division, Dan Kochpatcharin echoed this, calling the AI-optimised CSS “a prime example” of Arm-TSMC collaboration helping designers push semiconductor innovation’s boundaries for unmatched AI performance and efficiency.

“Together with Arm and our Open Innovation Platform® (OIP) ecosystem partners, we empower our customers to accelerate their AI innovation using the most advanced process technologies and design solutions,” Kochpatcharin emphasised.

Arm isn’t trying to compete with customers, but rather enable faster time-to-market by providing optimised designs for neural processors delivering cutting-edge AI performance.

As Arm’s Chris Bergey said, “We’re combining a platform where these accelerators can be very tightly coupled” to customer NPUs.

Essentially, Arm provides more refined, “baked” designs customers can integrate with their own accelerators to rapidly develop powerful AI-driven chips and devices.

SpaceX is preparing to launch the fourth test flight of its Starship system, aiming for liftoff within the next week (the targeted launch date is June 5). The primary goal for this flight will be to successfully navigate the spacecraft’s re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere.

In the most recent test conducted in March, SpaceX faced a significant hurdle when the Starship failed to properly orient its heat shield during re-entry. This misalignment caused the spacecraft to incinerate and disintegrate over the Indian Ocean. The harsh environment of atmospheric re-entry presents a significant hurdle for any spacecraft returning from space, and Starship Flight 4 specifically aims to overcome this challenge.

The primary objective of this fourth test flight is to achieve a controlled re-entry and demonstrate the reusability of both the Starship and the Super Heavy booster, while the spacecraft must ensure that the heat shield is oriented downward to prevent overheating once it achieves a controlled re-entry and soft splashdown for both the Super Heavy booster and Starship in the Gulf of Mexico.

Central to surviving re-entry is the performance of Starship’s heat shield. Comprised of roughly 18,000 hexagonal ceramic tiles, this shield acts as a protective barrier against the scorching temperatures (exceeding 1,400 degrees Celsius) generated by atmospheric friction during descent. As SpaceX CEO Elon Musk revealed, ensuring the functionality of this heat shield is paramount: “There are many tough issues to solve with this vehicle, but the biggest remaining problem is making a reusable orbital return heat shield, which has never been done before.” The success of Starship Flight 4 hinges on the ability of this heat shield technology to withstand the extreme conditions of re-entry.

The analysis of the March mission revealed critical issues experienced by both the Super Heavy booster and Starship during re-entry. A critical malfunction occurred during the Super Heavy booster’s re-entry sequence. Only two out of thirteen landing engines managed to re-ignite for the planned controlled water landing attempt. This failure, attributed to blocked liquid oxygen filters, has been addressed through hardware upgrades implemented for Flight 4. Furthermore, Starship’s descent through the atmosphere was far from smooth. The spacecraft encountered a turbulent re-entry, experiencing greater than anticipated heating across both protected and unprotected areas of the hull. Clogged valves also caused problems with attitude control during re-entry. To address this instability, additional roll control thrusters have been incorporated into the design for the upcoming flight.

To prepare for the fourth test flight, SpaceX conducted a successful launch rehearsal last Monday. This test included fueling both the Starship and its Super Heavy booster on the launch pad and going through the countdown stages without an actual launch. The successful completion of this rehearsal was a critical step in verifying the readiness of all systems. Following the rehearsal, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted, “Starship Flight 4 in about 2 weeks. Primary goal is getting through max reentry heating.”

To address the issues encountered in previous tests, SpaceX has made several hardware and software upgrades. One of them is the addition of a hot-staging adapter, a shielded ring that allows the second-stage engines to ignite before the booster engines shut off. This adapter will be jettisoned post-use to reduce the booster’s mass, enhancing the likelihood of a successful water landing. Additionally, SpaceX has included extra roll control thrusters to improve attitude control during re-entry.

Oyo, the Indian budget friendly hotel aggregator upstart, has finally swung into the green, after being years in the financial red. The company has achieved a major milestone, its first-ever profitable financial year. This news was announced by founder Ritesh Agarwal on social media platform X.

According to Agarwal, Oravel Stays, the parent company of the hospitality giant, achieved a profit after tax (PAT) of nearly ₹100 crore for the fiscal year 2023-24. This achievement was preceded by a crucial eight consecutive quarters of positive EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization). Agarwal’s post also mentioned that the company’s cash reserves stand at approximately ₹1,000 crore, providing the company with greater flexibility and resources for future endeavors.

This financial performance represents a significant turnaround for OYO, which reported a net loss of ₹1,287 crore in the previous fiscal year, 2022-23. The company’s revenue from operations for that year was ₹5,464 crore. In contrast, for 2023-24, OYO’s revenue is reported to be around $700 million (approximately ₹5,800 crore). “I see growth ahead not just in India with emerging travel trends such as premiumization, spiritual travel, business travel and conferences, destination weddings but also in our other key markets of Nordics, South East Asia, US and UK,” Agarwal wrote in his post on X. He added that the numbers

This development comes even as Oyo withdrew its draft papers for an initial public offering (IPO) for the second time in three years. However, OYO is actively seeking to raise $350 million to $450 million through bond issuance as part of its refinancing plan. Additionally, the company is looking to attract private investors for equity funding at a valuation of $3 billion to $4 billion, significantly lower than its peak valuation of $10 billion in 2019.

In FY24, OYO expanded its portfolio significantly, adding approximately 5,000 hotels and 6,000 homes globally. This expansion is part of OYO’s broader strategy to enhance its market presence and cater to a diverse range of customer needs. The gross booking value (GBV) per storefront per month for hotels was Rs 3.32 lakh (approximately $4,000). This improved financial performance has been recognized by global credit rating agency Fitch, which recently upgraded Oravel Stays Limited’s long-term foreign- and local-currency issuer default ratings from ‘B-‘ to ‘B’. Fitch also upgraded OYO’s senior secured term loan facility to ‘B’ from ‘B-‘, citing the company’s improved financial profile, sustained EBITDA growth, and a recent $195 million debt buyback.

For FY24, OYO reported an adjusted EBITDA of ₹888 crore (approximately $107 million), a significant increase from ₹274 crore (around $33 million) in FY23. Furthermore, OYO’s gross margins improved to ₹2,508 crore (around $302 million) from ₹2,350 crore (approximately $283 million) in FY23. Operating costs also saw a reduction, decreasing from 19% of GBV in FY23 to 14% in FY24.

Agnikul Cosmos, one of the front-runners in the recent race among India’s private space startups, has just demonstrated a critical tech that could potentially lead to even cheaper low orbital launches. The Indian startup successfully launched the Agnibaan SOrTeD rocket from Sriharikot on Thursday after four previous attempts that were aborted. The Agnibaan SOrTeD (Sub-Orbital Technological Demonstrator) is a single-stage rocket featuring India’s first semi-cryogenic engine, which is also the world’s first single-piece 3D-printed engine. The mission lasted for nearly two minutes.

The Agnibaan SOrTeD rocket is a significant technological advancement for Agnikul Cosmos and India’s space industry. The semi-cryogenic engine, Agnilet, uses a mixture of liquid and gas propellants, marking a first for India in spacetech and spaceflight technology. Typically, rocket engines consist of multiple parts that are assembled together, but Agnilet’s single-piece 3D-printed design simplifies the manufacturing process, reducing both costs and assembly time.

The rocket was developed and assembled at Agnikul’s facilities at IIT Madras, and the successful launch marked a culmination of thousands of hours of meticulous reviews and hard work by the Agnikul team. Srinath Ravichandran, co-founder and CEO of Agnikul Cosmos, expressed gratitude for the support received from IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center) and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization), which were instrumental in achieving this milestone.

The Agnibaan SOrTeD is designed to carry payloads of up to 300 kg to an altitude of 700 km, although this test flight was suborbital, reaching a height of approximately 8 kilometers before descending into the sea. This test flight serves as a crucial step toward Agnikul’s goal of launching its first orbital mission by the end of the fiscal year 2024-25. The launch vehicle is compatible with Agnikul’s mobile launchpad, Dhanush, which can be deployed from various locations, providing flexibility for future missions. Speaking more about the cryogenic engine, it utilized gases liquefied at extremely low temperatures as fuel. The semi-cryogenic variant used by Agnikul employs sub-cooled oxygen, offering a more efficient propulsion system.

For those who need a refresher about the company, founded seven years ago by Srinath Ravichandran, Moin SPM, and Prof. Satyanarayanan R Chakravarthy from IIT Madras, Agnikul Cosmos has made significant strides in a relatively short period. The company became the first Indian firm to sign an agreement with ISRO in December 2020, facilitated under the IN-SPACe initiative. This agreement provided Agnikul with access to ISRO’s expertise and state-of-the-art facilities, accelerating its development efforts. Agnikul has raised $42 million so far.

The Indian spacefaring community has widely celebrated Agnikul’s accomplishment. A K Bhatt, director general of the Indian Space Association (ISPA), termed the launch a “historical milestone” and expressed optimism for the future of India’s private space sector. Furthermore, Indian PM Narendra Modi also took to popular social media platform X to congratulate Agnikul Cosmos, calling the launch a momentous occasion for India’s space sector. “What Agnikul has achieved today, is nothing short of a historical milestone, since India launched its maiden rocket in 1963 from Thumba launch station. This is a huge boost and a proud moment for India’s thriving private space industry and just a glimpse into what the future holds for us, our hearty congratulations to the entire team behind this and best wishes for their future efforts,” Bhatt said.

Looking ahead, Agnikul Cosmos aims to expand its operations into commercial space missions by the third quarter of FY 2024-25. The startup is poised to conduct regular launches starting in 2025, offering customizable and cost-effective launch services.

Dell is deeply embedded in the AI landscape, leveraging a comprehensive four-pillar strategy to integrate the technology across its products and services.

Nicholas Brackney, Senior Consultant in Product Marketing at Dell, discussed the company’s AI initiatives ahead of AI & Big Data Expo North America.

Dell’s AI strategy is structured around four core principles: AI-In, AI-On, AI-For, and AI-With:

“Embedding AI capabilities in our offerings and services drives speed, intelligence, and automation,” Brackney explained. This ensures that AI is a fundamental component of Dell’s offerings.

The company also enables customers to run powerful AI workloads on its comprehensive portfolio of solutions, from desktops to data centres, across clouds, and at the edge.

AI innovation and tooling are applied for Dell’s business to enhance operations and share best practices with customers.

Finally, Dell collaborates with strategic partners within an open AI ecosystem to simplify and enhance the AI experience.

Dell is well-positioned to help customers navigate AI workloads, emphasising choice and adaptability through the various evolutions of emerging technology. Brackney highlighted Dell’s commitment to serving customers from the early stages of AI adoption to achieving AI at scale.

“We’ve always believed in providing choice and have been doing it through the various evolutions of emerging technology, including AI, and understanding the challenges that come with them,” explained Brackney. “We fully leverage our unique operating model to serve customers in the early innings of AI to a future of AI at scale.”

Looking to the future, Dell is particularly excited about the potential of AI PCs.

Ethical concerns in AI deployment are also a priority for Dell. Addressing issues such as deepfakes, transparency, and bias, Brackney emphasised the importance of a shared, secure, and sustainable approach to AI development.

“We believe in a shared, secure, and sustainable approach. By getting the foundations right at their core, we can eliminate some of the greatest risks associated with AI and work to ensure it acts as a force for good,” explains Brackney.

User data privacy in AI-driven products is another critical focus area. Brackney outlined Dell’s strategy of integrating AI with existing security investments without introducing new risks. Dell offers a suite of secure products, comprehensive data protection, advanced cybersecurity features, and global support services to safeguard user data.

On the topic of job displacement due to AI, Brackney underscored that Dell views AI as augmenting human potential rather than replacing it.

“The roles may change but the human element will always be key,” Brackney stated. “At Dell, we encourage our team members to understand, explore, and, where appropriate, use tools based on AI to learn, evolve, and enhance the overall work experience.”

Looking ahead, Brackney envisions a transformative role for AI within Dell and the tech industry. “We see customers in every industry wanting to become leaders in AI because it is critical to their organisation’s innovation, growth, and productivity,” he noted.

Dell aims to support this evolution by providing the necessary architectures, frameworks, and services to assist its customers on this transformative journey.

For Android users, accessing Apple TV+ content has historically meant navigating through a web browser. Now, however, this may be subject to change, and a recent job listing has sparked speculation that Apple might finally be developing a dedicated TV app for the Google Play Store.

The job listing, discovered by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, specifically seeks a “senior Android software engineer” to join the Apple TV app team. Notably, the responsibilities outlined in the listing include leading the development of “an application used by millions to watch and discover TV and sports.” This wording suggests that the iPhone-maker is planning to make the TV app available on Android smartphones and tablets, potentially opening the door for a more streamlined user experience for Android users seeking to access Apple TV+, enabling them to watch and discover TV and sports content.

Currently, Android users are limited to watching Apple TV+ content through the tv.apple.com website. The introduction of an Android app would offer several advantages for users, enabling them to browse and stream Apple TV+ shows and movies directly within the app, eliminating the need to navigate a web browser. The app could potentially function as a central hub for accessing subscribed channels within Apple TV+ and users’ existing iTunes movie and TV show purchases. Features like offline downloads for on-the-go viewing, picture-in-picture mode for multitasking, and personalized content recommendations could elevate the overall viewing experience for Android users.

Apple has a history of creating applications for Android. The company’s current offerings on the Google Play Store include Apple Music, Apple Music Classical, and others, each receiving frequent updates and maintaining high usability standards. Additionally, the TV app is already available on Android TV devices like Chromecast with Google TV. At this point, the app includes Apple TV+ originals, other Apple TV channels, as well as Apple’s growing sports content, such as Friday Night Baseball and the MLS Season Pass, amongst others.

Bringing the TV app to Android presents a significant opportunity for Apple to expand its reach for Apple TV+. For those who need a reminder, Apple TV+ was launched five years ago to serve as a direct competitor to established streaming services like Netflix and Disney+. Despite achieving critical acclaim and securing a Best Picture win at the Oscars in 2022, Apple has not disclosed detailed subscriber numbers or revenue figures. Expanding to Android devices could significantly boost Apple TV+ viewership, attracting a larger and more diverse subscriber base. This also comes at a time when Apple has increased the subscription price of Apple TV+ to $9.99 a month, doubling the initial rate.

The European Union has launched a new office dedicated to overseeing the implementation of its landmark AI Act, which is regarded as one of the most comprehensive AI regulations in the world. This new initiative adopts a risk-based approach, imposing stringent regulations on higher-risk AI applications to ensure their safe and ethical deployment.

The primary goal of this office is to promote the “future development, deployment and use” of AI technologies, aiming to harness their societal and economic benefits while mitigating associated risks. By focusing on innovation and safety, the office seeks to position the EU as a global leader in AI regulation and development.

According to Margerthe Vertager, the EU competition chief, the new office will play a “key role” in implementing the AI Act, particularly with regard to general-purpose AI models. She stated, “Together with developers and a scientific community, the office will evaluate and test general-purpose AI to ensure that AI serves us as humans and upholds our European values.”

Sridhar Iyengar, Managing Director for Zoho Europe, welcomed the establishment of the AI office, noting, “The establishment of the AI office in the European Commission to play a key role with the implementation of the EU AI Act is a welcome sign of progress, and it is encouraging to see the EU positioning itself as a global leader in AI regulation. We hope to continue to see collaboration between governments, businesses, academics and industry experts to guide on safe use of AI to boost business growth.”

Iyengar highlighted the dual nature of AI’s impact on businesses, pointing out both its benefits and concerns. He emphasised the importance of adhering to best practice guidance and legislative guardrails to ensure safe and ethical AI adoption.

“AI can drive innovation in business tools, helping to improve fraud detection, forecasting, and customer data analysis to name a few. These benefits not only have the potential to elevate customer experience but can increase efficiency, present insights, and suggest actions to drive further success,” Iyengar said.

The office will be staffed by more than 140 individuals, including technology specialists, administrative assistants, lawyers, policy specialists, and economists. It will consist of various units focusing on regulation and compliance, as well as safety and innovation, reflecting the multifaceted approach needed to govern AI effectively.

Rachael Hays, Transformation Director for Definia, part of The IN Group, commented: “The establishment of a dedicated AI Office within the European Commission underscores the EU’s commitment to both innovation and regulation which is undoubtedly crucial in this rapidly evolving AI landscape.”

Hays also pointed out the potential for workforce upskilling that this initiative provides. She referenced findings from their Tech and the Boardroom research, which revealed that over half of boardroom leaders view AI as the biggest direct threat to their organisations.

“This initiative directly addresses these fears as employees across various sectors are given the opportunity to adapt and thrive in an AI-driven world. The AI Office offers promising hope and guidance in developing economic benefits while mitigating risks associated with AI technology, something we should all get on board with,” she added.

As the EU takes these steps towards comprehensive AI governance, the office’s work will be pivotal in driving forward both innovation and safety in the field.
