Comcast is bringing a couple of new third-party connected devices to Xfinity Home, its subscription-based home-security and home-automation platform. One of them is Chamberlain’s MyQ garage door controller and the other one is Netgear’s Arlo security camera. The announcement comes a little over four months after the cable giant opened its connected-home platform to third-party vendors, admitting products such as August smart locks, Automatic’s car adapter/app, Cuff smart jewelry, the Leeo Smart Alert Nightlight, Lutron’s Caseta Wireless lighting controls, Rachio’s connected irrigation system, SkyBell’s video doorbell, and the Whistle pet monitor in the first wave. According to the press release, this latest move will allow both products to be controlled and monitored through the Xfinity Home smartphone app. As to exactly how that will work, we will have to wait until the company is done integrating the two products with its home-automation system. It expects to begin supporting the MyQ garage door controller sometime later this month and the Arlo security camera sometime early next year. Coming to the product themselves, the $130 MyQ lets you control your garage door opener remotely via a dedicated smartphone app. It includes a door sensor and a Wi-Fi-enabled control unit. Simply attach the former to the garage door and plug the latter into a nearby outlet, and you’re all set. As for the Arlo, it’s a weatherproof HD camera that’s fully wire-free. We reviewed the Arlo back in January. Why this matters : Comcast is developing a significant presence in this emerging market. The company told us last month that its home-automation offering currently boasts upwards of 500, 000 customers. Incorporating third-party devices is a much faster way to expand the appeal of its smart-home limiting its offerings to private-label devices. It could also complicate Comcast’s tech-support mission as all this hardware will need to interoperate in order to deliver on the full promise of the connected home.

Upon review, we will present various options and make specific recommendations to meet your needs. Urban Alarm Monitoring Service Urban Alarm offers more options for alarm system monitoring than any other alarm company in the Washington DC region. Each option has its advantages. In most cases we recommend alarm monitoring via IP (i.e. Internet), with backup monitoring via Cellular or SNAP Radio. This approach offers the speed and performance of the Internet with the reliability of two pathways. SNAP Radio (where available) offers one of the most reliable options in the industry. Our monitoring centers give you Total Peace of Mind because they: Are Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) Listed as a result of meeting the industry standards for burglary and fire protective signaling Are Members of the National Burglar & Fire Alarm Association (NBFAA) and the Security Industry Association (SIA), which aid in staying current on new technological advances Employ the latest in telephone technology so calls are quick and dependable Utilize two generators for extended power backup during adverse conditions Operate two computer systems, each, for alarm processing and backup Have Quality Assurance Teams monitor calls to ensure accurate and professional service

Comcast has hit the home security systems market in a big way with XFinity by Comcast Home Security. The packages offer impressive breadth of security for your home, and the security system prices are competitive with leading brands such as ADT and Protect 1. The XFinity by Comcast Home Security system is worth considering when it comes time to get written estimates for a complete package for your home. This XFinity by Comcast Home Security review offers a complete analysis so you can evaluate these packages as you select the right system for your home. We include home security prices in all of our home security reviews, so it is easy for you to compare home security systems head to head when doing research. | | | | Security Systems and Plans Comcast offers 3 essential home security plans, the Basic, Preferred and Premier. As you might guess, all of these are wireless systems rather than using a landline. Since internet can be problematic, each system has a digital cellular backup. Here’s an overview of the XFinity by Comcast Home Security packages along with security system prices. XFinity Basic Home Security: 24-hour home alarm monitoring is included. The plan offers cellular backup, email and text alerts when home alarms are triggered and minimal web portal access that only allows you to arm/disarm the system. The equipment package includes 1 wireless keypad, 2 window/door sensors and 1 motion detector. That’s about average for packages in this price range, though some will have 3 sensors. The installation fee is $199 and the monthly fee is $29.99 per month. XFinity Preferred Home Security: The upgrades from the Basic plan include complete programing of the system via the web, fire monitoring, touchscreen functionality and home automation of lights, locks, sound system, HVAC and more. There are 4 door/window sensors in this package instead of 2, and a keychain remote is included. The installment fee is $199 and the monthly home alarm monitoring cost is $39.95 per month. XFinity Premier Home Security: The upgrades are the same as the Preferred. What’s different is the equipment included. For the higher security system prices, you get all the features of the Preferred package along with 2 appliance/lighting controllers for home automation, 1 integrated thermostat for automating indoor climate control from a remote location and 1 indoor/outdoor camera. As for equipment warranty, the Premier Package includes a full warranty. For the other 2 plans, warranty coverage is available for $4.95 per month. Features and Accessories When you choose an XFinity by Comcast Home Security system, you’ll be protected by redundant IT and communication systems operated by highly-trained personnel at the home alarming monitoring center. There’s never a lapse in the monitoring coverage you receive. All systems have a battery backup for power outages and the cellular backup is included too. If you choose the Premier Package or add a video camera onto any package, you’ll be able to monitor your home from any remotely anywhere with internet access. Comcast offers a long list of add-ons for their systems. Here are a few of the most popular along with security equipment prices: Motion sensor, $149; window/door sensor, $69; keychain remote, $99; curtain motion sensor, $64; lighting/appliance controller, $89; indoor camera, $99; smoke or carbon monoxide detector, $99. Some of these items can be packaged for savings. Installation Information The installation fees are significant, and Comcast/XFinity technicians handle it all. While most of the equipment is quite easy to install, the technician will test the entire system to make sure it is operating flawlessly. Upfront and Monthly Monitoring Costs See the specifics of the security system prices above. XFinity by Comcast Home Security systems are reasonably priced, especially the Basic and Preferred Plans. However, if you have a larger home, you’ll need extra equipment and that is where prices start to rise. See all our security system reviews for features and prices of all the leading home security providers. When considering home security prices, it makes sense to get written estimates for complete packages designed for your home. Only then will you have hard figures you can accurately compare head to head. Let us know what you think! Have you recently purchased a XFinity Home Security System?

It’s considered covert surveillance when the cameras can’t be identified or can’t be seen. Security cameras are, for the most part, legal in the United States as long as it doesn’t intrude upon a person’s fourth amendment right to privacy. This article will go into the details of what is considered legal and what is not legal as far as surveillance goes so that all questions are answered. On the Uses of Covert Surveillance A saying that holds true in court is “a picture is worth a thousand words.” Studies have shown that when a jury is presented with surveillance footage, they are more likely to convict than if there is no video surveillance shown as evidence. The calculated placement of hidden surveillance cameras help with the detection and prosecution of theft, vandalism, elder neglect, child abuse, harassment and stalking. Some of the most common places that use camera surveillance are retail stores, hospitals, prisons, construction sites, nursing homes, police stations, casinos and of course in the family home. Watching the activities of household help and babysitters or nannies with covert surveillance cameras is on the rise. With newer technology, cameras can now be installed in such places as house plants, teddy bears, wall paintings and clocks. What Exactly is Illegal? In the US, most camera surveillance is considered legal. What you cannot do legally is post cameras where people have an expectation of privacy. bathroom stalls dressing rooms locker rooms changing rooms someone else’s house When is Audio Illegal? Most all situations involving an unattended recording device. Conversations you are not a part of. Covert surveillance may also be illegal when you have audio surveillance taking place without the permission of those monitored when the person under surveillance has a practical expectancy of privacy. Another case where video surveillance may be against the law is when the surveillance shows an illegal activity and the person under surveillance has a right to legal counsel, such as when being questioned by the law and the person in charge of the premises have not consented to video surveillance. Audio recording for the most part is only legal if you are recording and are an engaged member of a conversation. Engaged doesn’t just mean you are there, it means you are actually participating. Is It Okay to Use Video Surveillance? Studies have shown that in the US and the UK video surveillance does act as a great deterrent to stopping crimes before they occur. Studies also show that video surveillance can be a very powerful tool in detection and prosecution of crimes. The main thing to keep in mind is to know your local laws and to not just record anyone and everyone without their consent. If you follow all rules for covert surveillance, you should be okay under the law. Catching criminals is a great idea, just be sure you are not taking audio of people unknowingly.

You want to protect your home, and the people and things within it, but a monthly home security system is outside your budget. Don't worry, there are several inexpensive ways to make your home less attractive to thieves. Stopping Everyday Home Burglaries The stats are from 2005, but still point to some notable trends about everyday house robberies and things you can do to prevent them: Most burglaries occur between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. (Wikipedia also adds weekdays, and August being highest for burglary rates in the U.S.): Burglars look for homes that appear unoccupied, and residential homes, as you know, tend to be empty during those hours because people are at work. If you're out of the house during those hours and are concerned about burglaries in your neighborhood, consider setting a random timer to turn the TV or radio on during those hours. If you have a second car, keep it out in the driveway while you're at work. Or, perhaps you can rent your driveway during the daytime (besides making your home less attractive to thieves, you can make a few extra bucks. Win!); Park Circa is one place you can find people looking for a parking spot in your neighborhood. Do you use gardening services or other home maintenance services like window cleaning? Schedule those services (which don't require you to be at home) during those prime theft hours. The typical house burglar is a male teen in your neighborhood —not a professional thief and 60 seconds is the most burglars want to spend breaking into your home. This suggests you only need enough security to thwart the regular person. Simple things like the "my scary dog can run faster than you" sign may be one of the most effective theft deterrents, other than—or in addition to—actually owning a scary dog. (Even a small dog prone to barking helps, though.) Regular "beware of dog" signs work too, especially if you add some additional supporting evidence of dog ownership, like leaving a dog bowl outside by your side door. The Washington Post suggests deadbolt locks, bars on windows, and pins in sash windows may be effective theft deterrents. It goes without saying to make sure all the entry points are locked (but, still, 6% of burglaries happen that way). Homes without security systems are about 3 times more likely to be broken into. In lieu of actually signing up for a home security system, you could also just buy the decals and signs off of eBay or elsewhere, a few DIY ones using old webcams or your PC.) Fake security cameras placed at those points might also be effective. With your outside lighting, make sure those points of entry are well lit (motion-detector lights are inexpensive and don't use a lot of energy) and clear of thief-hiding shrubbery. An average of 8 to 12 minutes is all burglars spend in your home. If a thief does get into your house, you can prevent loss of your valuable objects by making them harder to find than within those 12 minutes. The dresser drawer, bedroom closet, and freezer are some of the first places thieves look, so forget about those hiding places. Instead, consider hiding things in plain sight. Protecting Your Home When You're on Vacation We've previously noted several ways to protect your home while traveling, including using push lights in your windows and asking your neighbors for a vacation check. Lifehacker reader fiji.siv reminded us of a small detail like not having your garbage cans put out as a sign that you're away; make sure any help you get from friends or neighbors include the little stuff like that (putting out garbage cans, getting the mail, maybe even cutting the grass). Don't forget the daily stuff like stopping newspaper and mail delivery, if you don't have someone picking those up for you. And, of course, the tried-and-true method of looking like you're home: use a random timer on your indoor lights or TV.

For most of us, security is a top priority when selecting door locks for our homes, followed by cost, style and finish. Choosing the best door locks for your doors depends on whether a door is interior or exterior, because each type of door requires completely different locking mechanisms. For example, it would not make sense to install a deadbolt on a bathroom door or a push-button privacy lockset on a front entry door. But before we get into that, let’s learn more about door locks in general and which ones are the most durable. ANSI Grading System for Locks & Deadbolts The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) established three grades for door locks to help identify the quality and durability of locksets and deadbolts. Each product must pass operational and security tests, including cycles, door strikes and weight test. One cycle consists of the knob or handle turning completely to retract the latch bolt and open the door, then it is released, allowing the door to re-latch. ANSI Grade 1 is the best choice for exterior residential door locks. Grade 1 – Best Highest grade security available. Meets commercial building requirements and is available for residential uses via deadbolts. There are not standard knobs, handlesets or mortise lockset that will meet ANSI Grade 1 certifications, only commercial lever handles. Knobs must withstand 800, 000 cycles, 6 door strikes and a 360 pound weight test Deadbolts must withstand 250, 000 cycles and 10 door strikes (hammer test) Grade 2 – Better Meets light commercial building requirements; exceeds standard residential security and building requirements. Knobs must withstand 400, 000 cycles, 4 door strikes and a 250 pound weight test Deadbolts must withstand 150, 000 cycles and 5 door strikes (hammer test) Grade 3 – Good Meets residential building requirements only and provides minimal residential security. Knobs must withstand 200, 000 cycles, 2 door strikes and a 150 pound weight test Deadbolts must withstand 100, 000 cycles and 2 door strikes (hammer test) Deadbolts Deadbolt locks provide the most security on residential doors. The term dead is used, because these locks do not contain springs. A single-cylinder deadbolt is operated with a key from the outside and with a turn button on the inside, and a double-cylinder is operated with a key on both the inside and outside. Double-cylinder deadbolts can pose a danger during an emergency if the key is missing or not readily available. Kwikset Double Cylinder Deadbolt Review – ANSI Grade 1 Price: MSRP .10 (less on Amazon) This double-cylinder deadbolt is operated by a key on both sides and features a SmartKey cylinder for easy re-keying. It has a fully adjustable latch and deadbolt to fit all standard doors. It is an extremely loved deadbolt by consumers and the ratings are high for it. Baldwin Single Cylinder Deadbolt Review – ANSI Grade 2 Price: MSRP $41.00 (less on Amazon) From the Baldwin Prestige collection, this single-cylinder deadbolt can be paired with several knobs from the collection.

Raise your hand if you want the Cable Guy in charge of your home security. Any cable guy – we’ll let you choose. There’s Larry the Cable Guy – he’s the reliable sort, right? Or Jim Carrey’s Cable Guy – surely he’s safe? Or, back to reality, let’s just talk about your experiences with your own cable provider. How do they score on reliability and customer service? All joking aside, we’re finding it difficult to get behind the cable companies’ home security offers . We understand why they’re doing it – customer attrition is a serious issue in that industry, and they want to offer value-added services that keep their customers locked in. Once you get their home security system installed, you’re a lot less likely to drop your cable service, because you’d lose your security investment. Xfinity, offered by Comcast, is perhaps the best known of the cable/internet bundled deals, which now includes a home security offer. In order to get their home security, you must contract for their internet services and you can’t cancel. The home security package includes options for some popular new features, such as wireless equipment, remote access, video cameras and home automation. However, Xfinity is priced higher than most competing home security services with the same features, and they lock you in with a 3-year contract. The alarm system installation costs hundreds of dollars. They also tack on an extra $5 every month for a warranty (warranties are free from most security companies). Xfinity’s biggest flaw, however, aside from the long-time issues with customer service, is that their home security service connects to the monitoring center via the internet. “Internet” and “Reliable” – in the Same Sentence? Someone’s breaking into your house, and your safety depends on your internet connection? Should you reboot your modem real quick before the intruder knocks the door down? Or maybe you should call your cable company’s Customer Service. Does their automated call screening system now include, “Press 9 if a burglary is in progress”? An alarm system needs to be monitored round-the-clock, by highly-trained staff, prepared to handle any emergency. Responsiveness is critical. There must be a reliable connection between the home and the monitoring center, because if it fails, no one sends help. Traditionally alarm systems have connected using your home phone line. The cable guys, of course, use their internet connection. Neither is acceptable, in our opinion. They simply aren’t reliable. Although a phone landline (if we still have such a thing) doesn’t fail as often as the internet does, it is still vulnerable to power outages, storms, and most especially, the burglars themselves. Burglars have learned to cut the lines and cables, assuming that will disable your alarm system. A cellular connection is the only reliable way for your home security system to reach the monitoring center. We suspect that the cable providers might actually know this, because they offer “cellular back-up.” So… they acknowledge that they need back-up… That tells you something, doesn’t it? Home Security vs. Home Automation The concept of a “smart” home, with integrated, automated services is quickly gaining popularity. Many home security companies successfully integrate home automation features with their highly interactive alarm systems. The remote access and customization capabilities are already built into the alarm system, so adding automated lighting, door locks or climate control is an easy, natural progression.
