46.
Baby Reindeer is the latest surprise megahit from Netflix, a show that arrived with little fanfare but racked up a 97% score from critics and has been absolutely planted at #1 on Netflix’s most-watched shows list since a few days after it arrived on April 11, three weeks ago.

 47.
Now we have some new data from Netflix showing just how much Baby Reindeer continues to dominate every other show on Netflix, despite this being week three of its release. Netflix’s own provided numbers show that Baby Reindeer has 87.4 million hours viewed and 22 million viewers total. For the week of April 22 to April 28, that is miles above the #2 show, Dead Boy Detectives, with 22.2 million hours viewed and just 3.1 million views overall. Baby Reindeer, approaching a month after release, is getting seven times the viewers of Netflix’s next-closest show.

 48.
And it’s not just viewing hours, the show has now gotten itself into solid contention in the limited series Emmy race, with Martha Scott’s Jessica Gunning an easy nominee for Best Actress in that category. Unfortunate if she has to go up against Shogun’s Anna Sawai, that may prove problematic for her. It also stands to reason we could see a nomination for Donny Dunn’s Richard Gadd as well.

 49.
<fbs-ad position="inread" progressive="" ad-id="article-0-inread" aria-hidden="true" role="presentation"></fbs-ad>

 50.
This is absolutely not a show that is going to get a second season, despite this viewership. If you didn’t know better you might think there could be another chapter of the saga or at least a new stalking case an anthology. But no, definitely not, this is based on the real-life experiences of Richard Gadd and the very real stalking and abuse he suffered. It’s true life, not fiction, and as such this story ends here and it would not be appropriate for it to be continued in some way. It’s presented as a limited series and unlike some shows that eventually shed that classification, this one will not.

 51.
I don’t know what will be the show that finally unseats Baby Reindeer from its top spot, but at least currently you can see that nothing is even close. The biggest Netflix show of May is easily Bridgerton season 3, though that doesn’t arrive until May 16. Before that, we’ll see. Selling the OC? A comedy special? Unclear.

 52.
Regardless, this is a huge success for Netflix, a quality series that I cannot recommend to everyone because of its subject matter, but it’s a high water mark for series quality on a service that needs more offerings at that level.

 83.
It’s not easy to say no to financial requests from the people in your life, but it might be necessary — especially if you’re retired and on a fixed income. After all, you’ve worked hard to get to where you are, and it’s important to prioritize your own financial well-being — and that of your household.

 86.
But how can you say no in an unflinching manner that doesn’t come across as rude or penny-pinching or make you feel guilty about turning down a friend or family member in need? Here are a few ways.

 87.
Sponsored: Protect Your Wealth With A Gold IRA. Take advantage of the timeless appeal of gold in a Gold IRA recommended by Sean Hannity.

 88.
Be Direct, Be Transparent

 89.
Talking about your financial situation might not be your favorite pastime, but it’s worth being direct and transparent with the people in your life.

 90.
“When responding to requests for money or invitations to spend what you are not comfortable with, it is best to be clear and direct,” said Stephen Kates, CFP, principal financial analyst for Annuity.org. “Saying something like ‘That isn’t in our budget’ may be all you need to say. For people that you trust, outline your own financial goals and provide the context on why certain limits exist.”

 91.
But try to avoid saying things that indicate you might be willing to lend or spend money in the future.

 92.
“Phrases like ‘We can’t right now’ or ‘We’ve already made donations this year’ may only kick the can down the road and encourage someone to come back another time,” said Kates. “If you truly can’t today but intend to help later, then explain that. However, if you want to shut the door to a certain person or request, then being brief and firm is important.”

 94.
Set Clear Boundaries

 95.
You may need to create and maintain some financial boundaries — ones you’re comfortable with and that keep your own finances on track. But do this as soon as possible to avoid giving them the wrong idea.

 96.
“You have to set clear boundaries around financial requests,” said Scott Neu, a financial advisor at Reinke Gray Wealth Management. “Let your loved ones know what they can ask for and what’s off-limits. Setting these boundaries upfront can prevent awkward or uncomfortable situations in the future, as they will likely happen again.”

 97.
Be candid about your boundaries, too. Tell the person making the request that you’re on a fixed income and need to be frugal or handle other financial responsibilities — like loan payments, property tax payments or even everyday expenses. If they’re not understanding of your situation, or if they’re pushy, at least you can say you’ve tried and be firmer with your “no” later on.

 98.
Story continues

 99.
Offer Non-Financial Means of Support

 100.
If someone you know is asking for money, try to find an alternative method of helping them out.

 101.
“Instead of providing financial assistance, offer alternative forms of support that may be helpful,” said Neu. “This could include helping them brainstorm solutions to their financial problems, providing emotional support or encouragement, or even assisting with tasks or services that don’t involve money.”

 102.
For example, you could offer to help with their budget or to keep track of their finances. Or you could suggest an affordable agency that provides that sort of financial help. Whatever the case may be, making the offer shows you care but that you simply aren’t in a position to give monetary support.

 103.
Wait To Respond

 104.
If you’re not totally sure what you want to do, or whether agreeing to a financial request is the best idea, give yourself time to reflect on it.

 105.
“Sometimes this is the best way to reply. Say something like: ‘Let me see what my budget looks like, and I’ll get back to you.’ This gives you the time to think about your response and to craft a refusal ever so politely,” said Erika Kullberg, an attorney, personal finance expert and founder of Erika.com.

 106.
Engage In a Broader Discussion

 107.
People can be persistent, so if you’ve said no and it hasn’t worked, you might need to change your tactics.

 108.
“If requests continue to come or certain individuals are repeatedly approaching you for help with money, then a broader financial discussion may be necessary to understand their own situation and help guide them towards other options for financial support,” said Kates.

 109.
Having such a discussion can also help everybody get on the same page and prevent further conflict or confusion about what’s acceptable and what’s not.

 110.
Suggest Financial Education

 111.
You might want to help out your loved ones every now and again, but it could turn into a pattern that hurts your own financial stability.

 112.
“Remember, it’s okay to prioritize your own needs and say no to requests that could jeopardize your financial security,” said Neu. “If you notice a pattern of [someone] repeatedly asking for the same thing, look into suggesting financial education resources or workshops to help your family and friends improve their financial literacy and manage their money more effectively.”

 113.
Be Consistent

 114.
If you haven’t consistently said no to someone, you might want to make that change.

 115.
“Be consistent in your responses,” said Kullberg. “If you say no and then give in, you teach others that your no might not be final after all. If you’re consistent, you teach them a different lesson; you’ll be more likely to be respected, and your boundaries will be less likely to be tested again.”

 116.
Just Say No

 117.
You don’t need a reason that you can’t agree to a financial request. If you don’t feel comfortable with it, or if you simply don’t want to offer help, that’s OK. Simply say no to the person asking you.

 118.
It might be stressful or tricky at first, but once you do it, you’re bound to feel better about it. Plus, it’ll be easier to say no to future requests from other people.

 141.
Jiang Li, Ph.D., is the Founder and CEO of Vivalink, Inc.

 142.
With the advancement of consumer-grade technology, there’s been a significant increase in the use of personal devices for various healthcare purposes. From smartphones and tablets to fitness trackers and smartwatches, patients are increasingly using their own devices to track health metrics, access medical information and communicate with healthcare providers.

 143.
The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend involves individuals utilizing their personal devices for both work and medical purposes, in turn integrating personal technology into healthcare workflows. While BYOD adoption offers numerous benefits, it also brings risks, especially concerning data security, privacy, reliability and accuracy.

 144.
As patients increasingly rely on personal devices in healthcare settings, professionals need to acknowledge the risks they bring and support the use of medical-grade devices. It’s important to ensure that medical-grade devices meet standards for data security, accuracy and regulatory compliance. Doing so is vital for delivering effective healthcare and protecting patient information.

 145.
<fbs-ad position="inread" progressive="" ad-id="article-0-inread" aria-hidden="true" role="presentation"></fbs-ad>

 146.
Consumer-Grade And Medical-Grade Wearables In Healthcare

 147.
In recent years, the popularity of consumer-grade fitness trackers, smartwatches and heart rate monitors has soared, offering users the ability to monitor health metrics and track their fitness goals. Smartwatches make up a major segment of the growing global wearables market. According to the Pew Research Center, nearly one in five U.S. adults (21%) say they regularly wear a smartwatch or fitness tracker. Looking ahead, the smartwatch trend is only set to increase in popularity. Statista projects global smartwatch shipments to surge from 37 million units in 2016 to over 402 million units by 2027.

 148.
While these devices provide valuable insights into a patient’s daily activity levels and overall well-being, it’s important to acknowledge the distinction between consumer-grade and medical-grade wearables. Medical-grade wearables, specifically designed for medical use, undergo rigorous testing and certification processes to ensure accuracy, reliability and regulatory compliance. They also are often used under the supervision of medical professionals.

 149.
Medical-grade wearable devices play an increasingly vital role in modern healthcare. They monitor multiple vital signs and parameters, including heart rate, skin temperature, heart rate variability and respiratory rate. Devices that offer continuous monitoring also enhance the accuracy and reliability of data by collecting patient data over a period of time and under varying conditions.

 150.
By recognizing the risks associated with relying solely on personal devices and emphasizing the importance of certified medical devices, healthcare providers can safeguard patient data integrity, maintain regulatory compliance and ensure high-quality care. Educating patients on the benefits of medical-grade wearables and the potential drawbacks of using their own devices can further enhance the effectiveness and safety of RPM.

 151.
Assessing Risks And Considerations Of BYOD

 152.
In a recent study, researchers delved into the challenges hospitals face with BYOD policies. They uncovered concerns surrounding insufficient device security, staff awareness and usage guidelines. According to the findings, hospitals need to educate staff, establish clear policies and employ suitable technological solutions to effectively handle implementation challenges and adapt to evolving risks associated with BYOD.

 153.
With wearable technology and personal devices on the rise in the healthcare industry, it’s important for both healthcare professionals and patients to prioritize the adoption of medical-grade wearables for medical purposes. Using personal fitness trackers or smartwatches for medical purposes presents distinct challenges.

 154.
Accuracy and reliability: Medical-grade wearables undergo thorough testing and certification processes to ensure accuracy and reliability in clinical settings. In contrast, personal fitness trackers may not meet the standards required for medical use, leading to potential inaccuracies in health data monitoring. For example, a temperature sensor on a smartwatch may not produce an accurate reading due to its location on the body and exposure to ambient temperatures.

 155.
Data security: Personal fitness trackers may lack adequate security features designed to protect sensitive medical data. As a result, there’s a higher risk of data breaches or unauthorized access when using these devices for medical purposes, potentially compromising patient privacy. Many consumer-grade trackers automatically send data to the vendor’s cloud, which may or may not be HIPAA compliant.

 156.
Regulatory compliance: Medical wearables are subject to regulatory requirements that ensure their safety and effectiveness for medical use. For example, in the United States, medical devices undergo review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before being approved for patient use. Devices are classified into risk-based categories, ranging from Class I to Class III. Personal fitness trackers may not meet these regulatory standards, affecting their suitability for clinical applications. For FDA clearance, medical devices must also undergo clinical validation to demonstrate their effectiveness in monitoring specific health conditions and outcomes. However, personal fitness trackers may lack clinical validation data, making it difficult to assess their accuracy and reliability for medical monitoring purposes.

 157.
Interoperability and integration: Wearables are often designed to integrate with healthcare systems and electronic health records (EHR) platforms, allowing for efficient data exchange and interoperability. Personal fitness trackers may lack interoperability features, making it challenging to integrate their data into existing healthcare workflows and systems.

 158.
While personal fitness trackers offer convenience and accessibility for general health and wellness tracking, they may not be suitable for medical purposes. Providers should exercise caution when considering personal fitness trackers for medical monitoring and prioritize the adoption of medical-grade wearables that meet established standards for safety, effectiveness and data security.

 187.
Crypto firms, alongside retail banking, wholesale banking and wealth management, posed the greatest risk of being exploited for money laundering between 2022 and 2023, a report by the government’s financial arm said on Wednesday.

 188.
The conclusion from the report came from the Financial Conduct Authority risk assessments on 238 firms. The FCA is a financial regulator in the U.K., and it has been ensuring crypto firms register with it and comply with its money laundering rules since 2020.

 189.
The country has been trying to clamp down on crypto-related crime recently. The U.K. police said it had crypto tactical advisors stationed across the country to help seize digital assets attached to crime in October 2022. At the time, the National Police Chiefs’ Council said they had managed to seize hundreds of millions worth of crypto from crimes.

 190.
Data from the newly released report showed that between 2022 and 2023, there were the equivalent of 52.8 full-time financial crime specialist employees that were dedicated to anti-money laundering supervision at the FCA and 15.8 of those focused on supervising crypto businesses.

 191.
Meanwhile, wider supervisory teams outside the dedicated financial crime specialist teams opened 95 cases in relation to crypto-assets between the reports recording period.

 221.
If you’re at all like me, you have a spot soft for historical dramas. And an even softer spot for romance. And perhaps an even softer spot for all things Scotland. No TV series out there does all three of these better than Outlander.

 222.
The harrowing story of Claire (Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) returns to Netflix today with its sixth season today. Season 6 aired on Starz back in 2022, a full two years ago, and is only just now coming to Netflix.

 223.
Season 7 aired late summer last year and Season 8 is currently filming, with no official release date at this time.

 224.
Minor spoilers ahead.

 225.
Season 6 was a genuinely thrilling season of Outlander, and introduced one of the show’s best—and most complex—characters in Thomas Christie, played brilliantly by Thomas Lewis Jones. Christie is a man you hate right off the bat, before you find yourself grudgingly admiring him as he changes for the better, largely thanks to Claire’s influence.

 226.
<fbs-ad position="inread" progressive="" ad-id="article-0-inread" aria-hidden="true" role="presentation"></fbs-ad>

 227.
The sixth season follows the harrowing events that ended Season 5 (and one horrifying scene in particular that made me stop watching the show for a spell). It sets up the story of Claire and Jamie’s role in the Revolutionary War, which is fast approaching. Meanwhile, Season 7 leads to what we’ve all been anticipating most: The lovestruck couple’s return to Scotland after years and years spent building a life in the New World.

 228.
Outlander is based on the best-selling novels by Diana Gabaldon, a local author who comes from my neck of the woods here in Northern Arizona. Season 8 will be the show’s final season. There are nine books in the series.

 229.
What do you think of Outlander? Let me know on Twitter and Facebook.

 254.
It’s officially halfway to Halloween and some stores are offering decor way ahead of the spooky season.

 255.
Home Depot has restocked its viral 12-foot tall skeleton and other Halloween decorations, but a limited amount are available and many items are already sold out.

 256.
“We are happy to see the customers’ reactions and enthusiasm for the Halfway to Halloween and #CodeOrange event…we are excited to lean into it and enjoy the fandom alongside them,” Tyler Pelfrey, manager of brand communications for Home Depot, told Fox Business via email.

 257.
“Our Halfway to Halloween sale is for our most dedicated customers, the Halloween super fans. For them, building upon their Halloween collection isn’t a seasonal task, it is a year-round journey,” he added.

 258.
Customers were given a heads-up about “#CodeOrange” on Home Depot’s social media platforms, where many users shared thoughts about the early Halloween sale as it was announced six months ahead of the ghoulish holiday.

 259.
“It isn’t even summer yet! Slow your roll!” one social media user commented.

 260.
 261.
“If we can have Christmas in July, a little Springoween won’t hurt,” another person wrote in response.

 262.
Skelly, the 12-foot tall skeleton, has made headlines since its launch four years ago.

 263.
“Finally I can purchase Skelly, waited 3 years for this,” one user wrote.

 264.
“Refresh page every minute after the clock strikes midnight. If I don’t snag a Skelly this year I will lose it,” another commented.

 265.
 266.
 267.
Pelfrey said that he and his team knew that Skelly, Skelly’s dog, as well as the Deadwood Inferno Skeleton and Frankenstein’s Monster would be hot items ahead of Halloween.

 268.
“Since his debut in 2020, Skelly and his friends have been growing in popularity, and we wanted to give our customers multiple opportunities to get their hands on these innovative items,” Pelfrey added.

 269.
Due to the skeleton’s rising popularity, Home Depot has launched more giant holiday decorations — including the 5-foot-tall, 7-foot-long skeleton dog.

 270.
After the home improvement store went live with the “Halfway to Halloween” event, customers were doing everything they could to get their hands on hot-ticket items, according to comments posted on Home Depot’s Instagram account.

 271.
“I did it! I got the skeleton. I was half asleep when doing it since I was waking up every hour since 2am but I finally got the damn skeleton for my brother. Praise up! Lol,” one social media user commented on Instagram.

 272.
 273.
“Been up all night refreshing my phone for Frank! Got him,” another person wrote in reference to the 7-foot Frankenstein’s Monster.

 274.
Several users were apparently not able to grab hold of the viral skeleton or other larger-than-life Halloween decor, and some even requested that Home Depot re-stock some items.

 275.
“The dog sold out in 2 mins!!! I’m bummed I was filling out my address and then all the sudden couldn’t complete bc it was gone,” one disappointed user wrote.

 276.
 277.
“Dear @homedepot however many Skelly Dog’s you are planning on having for Halloween- triple it. Trust me,” a user commented.

 278.
Other retailers such as Target and Lowe’s have Halloween decorations currently for sale online. Vendors like Spirit Halloween, Amazon and halloweencostumes.com list similar items all year round.

 307.
There may not be a total solar eclipse to get excited about, but May’s night sky is not to be underestimated. One of the year’s best meteor showers will peak early this month before some superb moon and planetary views. The deep sky also comes into view, with the darkest skies in the first 10 days of May.

 308.
Here’s what to look for in the night sky this month:

 309.
Saturn And The Moon

 310.
When: an hour before sunrise, May 3, 4 and an hour and 2:00 a.m. May 31

 311.
Where: eastern pre-dawn sky

 312.
Since the moon follows a similar path through the sky each month, when it comes close to a planet during one orbit it will also do on the next. This month Saturn will appear close to a 29%-lit waning crescent moon on May 3, a 19%-lit waning crescent moon early on May 4, and first quarter moon on May 31.

 313.
<fbs-ad position="inread" progressive="" ad-id="article-0-inread" aria-hidden="true" role="presentation"></fbs-ad>

 314.
Bodes Galaxy And The Cigar Galaxy

 315.
When: after dark

 316.
Where: northern sky close to the Big Dipper

 317.
Spring is galaxy season, the easiest time to peer outside of our galaxy and see the building blocks of the universe at large. One of the best sights of all in a small telescope is M81 and M82, the former a face-on spiral galaxy and the latter a distorted galaxy we have a side-on view of. Both are 12 million light-years away. They’re in Ursa Major, home to the Big Dipper, which is “up” in spring after dark in the northern sky.

 318.
Eta Aquariids Meteor Shower Peaks

 319.
When: midnight May 4-5

 320.
Where: all-sky

 321.
The best display of “shooting stars” since December’s Geminids will occur early this month when the Eta Aquariids peak. The Eta Aquariids meteor shower is the result of a cloud of debris left in the inner solar system by Halley’s comet and is expected to produce about 20 to 30 meteors per hour. As a bonus, the peak—best seen in the early hours of May 5—will occur in dark, moonless skies.

 322.
A Crescent Moon After Sunset

 323.
When: after sunset, May 9, 10 and 11

 324.
Where: western sky

 325.
The three or four nights after a New Moon are ideal for seeing a beautifully slim crescent moon shine in the western sky after dark. This month, that happens from May 9-11, with the best views in the west, just after sunset. May 8 wil see the crescent moon close to Jupiter. Look out for “Earthshine”—sunlight reflected from Earth back onto the moon, which lights up its “dark side.”

 326.
‘Flower Moon’ Rising

 327.
When: May 23

 328.
Where: eastern sky

 329.
Is there any more spectacular sight in nature—aside from a total solar eclipse—than a full moon rising in the east? Looking muted in brightness and orange in color, May’s “Flower Moon” will be best seen at moonrise where you are tonight. Look to the lower left, and you’ll see Antares, the brightest star in the summer constellation Scorpius.

 330.
Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.

 360.
We’re a long way into the current iPhone software cycle and most features we were expecting have launched. But the latest beta version of iPhone software, iOS 17.5, reveals something nobody had predicted: a new state for the phone to be in when it’s sent to be repaired.

 361.
Appropriately enough, it’s called Repair State, and it looks like a useful added convenience.

 362.
The new element was spotted by 9to5Mac combing through the code of iOS 17.5 beta 4, now available to both developers and as a public beta. The report says, “This new mode seems to be partially working for beta users and it changes the requirements for sending an iPhone in for repairs.”

 363.
Currently, if you are sending your iPhone off to be fixed, either to Apple or to an authorized repair center, you have to remember to turn off Find My, which is done by going to the Settings app.

 364.
<fbs-ad position="inread" progressive="" ad-id="article-0-inread" aria-hidden="true" role="presentation"></fbs-ad>

 365.
However, the excellent Stolen Device Protection feature which helps protect users whose iPhone has been stolen by someone who know their passcode, has complicated how you do this.

 366.
Find My is one of the settings deemed sensitive and to change it, a time delay has been added if they’re not in a location the iPhone deems familiar and safe.

 367.
Imagine, then, arriving at the Apple Store to drop off your iPhone for repair, without having turned off Find My, only to learn that Stolen Device Protection required them to wait an hour before disabling Find My.

 368.
The essence of Repair State is that a new mode is added where, as 9to5Mac puts it, “users confirm with their Apple ID and password that they’re about to send their iPhone in for a repair. As a result, Apple technicians can confirm that the person owns the iPhone and then proceed with the repair without the need to turn off Stolen Device Protection and Find My.”

 369.
In the beta, a message reads, This iPhone is linked to your Apple ID and cannot be removed while it’s online, but you can still prepare it for repair.” This is followed by a notification that the iPhone is ready for repair and remains, “fully functional.” The new feature is coming for iPhone but not iPad.

 370.
This is a useful added convenience without reducing safety. The general release of iOS 17.5 is coming soon, perhaps as early as next Monday, May 6 or Tuesday, May 7.

 439.
Gray Zone Warfare has taken the top spot on the Steam Charts less than 24 hours after launching into Early Access.

 440.
After releasing to the public for the first time yesterday, Gray Zone Warfare now sits at the number one spot on the Steam top sellers chart, beating out fellow early access hit Manor Lords which previously held the top spot. It’s even proving more popular than the Steam Deck, which often sits at the top of the charts given its popularity.

 441.
Gray Zone Warfare’s surprise launch seems to have done it the world of good, given that many fans of Escape From Tarkov were looking for a new and similar game to play after the outrage of the past week that saw a lot of players quit Tarkov. While Gray Zone has a lot of differences from Tarkov, it does scratch the same itch as a realistic extraction-based shooter and the Tarkov community has taken to it in massive numbers.

 442.
But the success has led to some issues with server capacity and bugs. These appear to have been fixed within a few hours of them showing up, and personally, I have had no server issues since the first few hours after launch.

 443.
However, this has led to some backlash from players who were not able to get into the game due to server queue times, or players who have found the fairly reasonable system requirements too high for their PC. Many of these players have taken to the Steam reviews to voice their displeasure, leading to a mixed status of reviews for Gray Zone Warfare.

 444.
<fbs-ad position="inread" progressive="" ad-id="article-0-inread" aria-hidden="true" role="presentation"></fbs-ad>

 445.
There have been some more serious bugs, such as some players not having heads or clothes, losing items in their stash and being unable to accept quests, but already there has been one hot fix that aims to solve some of these issues. If you are experiencing similar issues, some players have reported that verifying the game files on Steam has solved the issue.

 446.
But providing your PC is strong enough to run the game you will likely have a great time in Gray Zone Warfare, especially as a lot of improvements have been made since the first streamer-only test last week. However, when you first jump into the game there are a lot of things that are not explained, so you may want to read up on some tips and tricks, or how to complete the starting quests.
