Orihuela is preparing for Christmas by placing four contracts for a total amount of 434,524 euros. These are in addition to two other tenders already underway, the 30,524 euros for the Santa Claus Village and the dissemination of the Christmas campaign, at a cost of 45,300 euros.

In total, six contracts are being offered with a budget of 510,348 euros in addition to the 375,000 for Christmas lights, a sum of more than 885,000 euros.

The coalition government wants to avoid last year’s problems, with the most austere festivities and lighting for years as a result of a very limited budget that barely exceeded 61,000 euros. Only the city was reasonably well lit, leaving 24 pedanías in the dark and with no more than symbolic lighting on the Coast.

This time, the government has allocated €375,093 in Christmas lights for the entire municipality.

Further contracts include the three kings parades with a budget of 207,696 euros, of which 154,940 is for the city and 52,756 for the Coast. As usual, the kings will visit the Vega Baja Hospital (on January 4 at 11:30 a.m.) before their official reception in the city.

For the parade on the coast, the theme will be of the marine world, La Sirenita, ballets, starting at the Playa Flamenca Town Hall to the stage inside La Zenia shopping centre, where the reception of the Magi will be held and a thousand gifts will be distributed to children.

Other contracts that have been tendered, with a budget of 134,310 euros, are the Christmas Market in the city (60,500 euros), from 14 to 24 December; a Magic Walk (66,550), on 20 and 21 December, and the New Year’s Eve party on 31 December (7,260).

There will be Santa Claus parade in the urban centre (39,675 euros) and on the Costa (24,200) the contract has an estimated total value of 65,327 euros.

Goblins, animated characters, stilt walkers, puppeteers and ladies from Lapland, are among other surprises, in addition to the Santa Claus float, will parade on December 23 in the city.

On the Costa, for the international population, Mama Noel will accompany five Christmas queens representing the different reigns of the world, in a parade full of surprises on December 20 at 6:00 p.m. leaving the Town hall and travelling through Calle Pablo Picasso, Nicolas de Bussi, Dalí and Jade.

At the end of each tour, the reception of Santa Claus will take place in the Glorieta Gabriel Miró and inside the shopping centre of La Zenia. The successful bidder must supply toys for the minimum amount of 3,000 in the centre and 1,500 on the coast.

The contract for the installation of the municipal Nativity scene, one of the traditions most expected by the Oiola society, has a budget of 27,191 euros, of which 24,771 is for the city, which includes restoration of damaged pieces and the manufacture of new pieces, and 2,420 euros for that of the Coast.

As last year, the municipal Nativity will be located in the former Orihuela tourist office. In the case of the coast, it will be the town hall in Playa Flamenca.

In total, the council is investing over €885,000 in Christmas festivities. This significant investment aims to rectify past shortcomings, such as last year’s criticized Santa Claus parade and limited Christmas lighting. The city council says that it is committed to creating a memorable and festive Christmas experience for all.

The proposed construction of a second health centre in Orihuela Costa has hit a significant barrier. Despite strong local advocacy, the Ministry of Health has excluded the project from its current roadmap.

Tomás Moreno, President of Unidos por la Costa, has been a vocal advocate for improved healthcare infrastructure in the region. He has repeatedly highlighted the severe strain on the existing health centre, particularly during peak seasons when the population swells. The current facility, located on Calle del Mar in Aguamarina, is ill-equipped to handle the demand, suffering from overcrowding, insufficient resources, and a shortage of medical personnel.

While the 2024 budget earmarked funds for the expansion of the existing centre, progress has been blocked by land-related issues. The Ministry has emphasized that these obstacles must be resolved before the expansion can proceed.

The political landscape has also influenced the project’s trajectory. The previous administration in Valencia rejected the idea of a second centre due to concerns about insufficient health card holders. However, the current municipal government in Orihuela favours expansion over a new facility. Nevertheless, both residents and opposition groups contend that both expansion and a second centre are necessary to adequately address the region’s healthcare needs.

The situation remains uncertain, with the future of the second health centre hinging on the resolution of land-related issues and the alignment of political priorities. Meanwhile, the local community continues to urge for decisive action to alleviate the chronic healthcare challenges facing residents of and visitors to Orihuela Costa.

Is Geri, our choreographer, Lena Zaveroni and Bonnie Langford wrapped into one? The work load, the enthusiasm and the delightful way of producing and teaching routines from the songs in our scripts, would suggest so. She has brought fresh dynamics to dancing and tapping in the productions of Studio32 and delights the audiences with each original routine.

Theatre seasons come and go, yet behind the scenes, rehearsals develop over five months as the dedicated members practice their roles. Long established members are joined by new talented members for each show which is an ongoing requirement and delight.

This is Spain. People move, find jobs. Some actually move back to the UK. Heaven knows why! But fortunately, some move to Spain! Imagine this. Geri missed her former life in theatre. She was a dancer from the age of two, made her debut at The Winter Gardens aged six and progressed to performing in over 70 shows in the UK.

She played in leading roles, ensembles and dance routines. Geri progressed to choreograph numerous productions. No wonder there was something missing when she moved to Spain. This is where the luck comes in.

A chance remark and a ticket to see our production of Guys and Dolls brought Geri to Studio32. The rest is history. Geri took the role of choreographer and became fully committed to the group. She also sings and dances in all of our productions and adds huge talent to the group.

She also finds the time to assist in the wardrobe department. Geri admits that joining the group has been the tick in the box to fulfil her life in Spain and that working alongside such a talented team has made her very content.

It goes without saying that everyone in the company is absolutely delighted to have Geri at the helm as choreographer. Please do come along and see what the excitement is all about.

The Studio32 Broadway Christmas is showing this month at Cardinal Belluga Theatre from Tuesday 26th to Friday 29th. Tickets are selling fast so book yours now to avoid missing out. The following outlets have tickets or go online at Studiothirtytwo.org.

Post room, Benimar, The Card Place, Benijofar, Con Mar, Quesada, Cards and More, La Marina, Marina Dress , La Marina, Bobs Bar ,La Marina, La Bodega supermarket ,San Louis and The Post Box, Donna Peppa .

Crescendo International Choir performed an extremely successful 20th anniversary concert on Saturday, October 26, at Salt Church in Los Montesinos. A wide variety of popular music covering the last twenty years of Crescendo’s existence was sung. Many of the songs performed go much further back in time, however.

The choir opened its concert with the foot-stomping song The Greatest Show, from the 2017 musical, The Greatest Showman. Then reaching back to the earliest period of the choir’s existence, the years 2004-2009, the choir sang Chattanooga Choo Choo, first performed by Glen Miller and his Orchestra in 1941. Then they followed up with I Have a Dream, Living Love and Play for Me a Simple Melody. This last song was written by Irving Berlin for a 1914 musical.

For the years 2009-2014, they performed The Humming Chorus from the famous opera Madame Butterfly. After that, the choir entertained the audience with Begin the Beguine, written by Cole Porter in 1935, and The Rhythm of Life, from a 1966 Broadway musical. After that, there was a break where a raffle was held.

For the years 2014 to 2019, the choir sang the Spanish song El Vito, then Viva la Vida by Coldplay and Thank You for the Music by ABBA. For the final part of the concert, covering the years 2019 up to the present, they performed Fix You by Coldplay, the Spanish song Clavelitos (Little Carnations), Sway and a medley of tunes from the popular musical Les Misérables.

During the concert, the names of choir members who passed away in the last 20 years was also shared with the audience.

This concert was a ticket only event, and from the proceeds the choir gave away 1000€ in charity donations.

The choir would be delighted to welcome new singers. The current choir includes people from England, Scotland, Wales, the US, the Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia, among other nationalities. Crescendo’s Music Director, Irene Oliva, and pianist, Antonio Guillen, are accomplished Spanish musicians.

Choir rehearsals take place at Rincon de Miguel in Los Montesinos. They are held on Monday evenings from 17:45 to 19:45. All singers are welcome.

For more details about the choir, see crescendo-choir.com. You can also follow the group on Facebook at Crescendo Choir. If you have questions, email info@crescendo-choir.com.

Orihuela City Hall has successfully secured a €41.4 million loan to fund a wide range of infrastructure and community projects. The funds were obtained through three separate loan agreements with Caja Rural Central.

The allocated funds will be used for various initiatives, including:

Infrastructure Development: Construction of the second phase of the Orihuela Costa Security and Emergency Centre, purchase of emergency vehicles, renovation of water supply networks, construction of a new footbridge over the AP-7, road improvements, and creation of new public spaces.

Historical Heritage Preservation: Revitalization of Orihuela’s historic centre, development of cultural and social infrastructure, and rehabilitation of the Regional Archaeological Museum.

Social Services and Community Development: Funding for social assistance programs, improvements to the Oriol Occupational Centre and CRIS, upgrades to public facilities, and investments in sports, health, and environmental initiatives.

Mayor Pepe Vegara expressed his satisfaction with the successful loan acquisition, stating that it, combined with the €20 million from the Municipal Land Patrimony, will enable the city to undertake significant investments across the municipality. These projects are expected to enhance the quality of life for Orihuela residents and contribute to the overall development of the city.

Torrevieja is gearing up for the grand opening of its newest sports facility, La Mata Sports Centre. Scheduled to open its doors in November, this state-of-the-art centre is set to become a hub for sports and community activities.

The facility boasts a range of amenities, including a fully air-conditioned multi-sports court, gym, multipurpose rooms, changing rooms, and a cafeteria. The 45×24 meter multi-sports court is designed to accommodate a variety of sports, from indoor football to badminton.

The centre’s unique design, featuring large tarpaulins depicting the local beach and natural areas, has garnered national attention. This innovative approach aims to mitigate potential visual impact on nearby residents.

Despite initial challenges, including plot size constraints and unforeseen construction needs, the project has progressed ahead of schedule. The City Council has invested nearly €6 million in the facility, with additional funds allocated for modifications and improvements.

As the centre prepares to open its doors, the local government is addressing potential parking issues in the area. Plans are underway to optimize parking spaces in the nearby Doña Perfecta park to accommodate the expected influx of visitors.

Torrevieja Council is taking proactive steps to manage the local cat population. Through its Animal Protection Department, the council has been actively sterilizing stray cats, with nearly 400 procedures completed between January and October 2024.

A key component of this initiative is the Municipal Plan for Locating Cat Colonies, which aims to identify and map these colonies, as well as the individuals who care for them. By collaborating with local associations, the council has implemented a successful “Capture, Sterilize, Return” (CSR) program to control population growth

To further streamline the management of cat colonies, the council plans to issue identification cards and vests to both the colonies and their caretakers. This will help to formalize their roles and facilitate better communication with local authorities.

In addition to these practical measures, the council is committed to raising awareness about animal welfare. Recent training sessions for cat colony caregivers have focused on the new Animal Welfare Law and best practices for caring for animals. Future initiatives will continue to promote responsible pet ownership and harmonious coexistence between humans and animals.

The devastating DANA weather event has prompted a significant aid package from the Generalitat Valenciana and the Valencia Provincial Council, aimed at addressing the immediate and long-term consequences of the disaster.

The Generalitat has allocated a substantial €250 million aid package to assist affected individuals and communities. This funding will be used to provide direct financial support to those who have lost homes or property, cover the costs of repairs and reconstruction, and offer social services to vulnerable populations. The aid will be distributed through various channels, including direct payments to individuals, grants to municipalities for infrastructure repair, and tax incentives to encourage rebuilding efforts.

The Valencia Provincial Council has committed €25 million to restore the provincial road network, focusing on critical infrastructure like bridges and roads in heavily affected areas. The council will expedite the repair process by utilizing emergency procedures and prioritizing essential repairs. This will involve mobilizing heavy machinery, construction crews, and specialized equipment to clear debris, repair damage, and restore transportation routes.

Beyond the immediate financial aid, both the Generalitat and the Provincial Council are exploring additional measures to support the recovery efforts. These include activating the European Union Solidarity Fund to secure additional resources and collaborating with the central government to obtain emergency funding for infrastructure repair.

The combined efforts of these institutions represent a significant step towards helping the affected communities rebuild their lives and recover from the devastating impact of the DANA. As the full extent of the damage becomes clearer, additional aid packages and support measures may be implemented to address the evolving needs of the region.

Furthermore, both the Generalitat and the Provincial Council are working closely with local authorities and community organizations to coordinate relief efforts, assess damage, and distribute aid efficiently. This collaborative approach ensures that resources are allocated effectively and that the needs of the most vulnerable populations are met.

As the recovery process unfolds, it is crucial to monitor the long-term impacts of the DANA and to provide ongoing support to affected communities. This may include mental health services, job training programs, and assistance with housing and relocation. By working together and implementing comprehensive recovery plans, the affected regions can rebuild stronger and more resilient.

Spain is experiencing its most devastating DANA in a century, leaving a trail of death and destruction, primarily in the province of Valencia, but also severely impacting Albacete, Malaga, and Almeria. At least 100 people have died, with at least 92 in Valencia alone, as the death toll is expected to rise as many remain missing.

Emergency services have conducted 70 air evacuations and 200 land rescues, working tirelessly to save those stranded on roofs and trapped in vehicles. Power outages and extensive flooding have further complicated rescue efforts.

King Felipe VI expressed his condolences and emphasized the need to help those affected. More than a thousand soldiers from various battalions have been mobilized to assist in rescue operations. Civil Guard officers have rescued 1,200 people trapped on motorways due to accidents and roadblocks caused by the storm.

The heavy rains have led to power outages for 155,000 people and disrupted high-speed rail services between Madrid and the Valencian Community. Flights have been diverted, and rail services in Valencia remain suspended. The Aemet rain gauges recorded an unprecedented 491 litres per square meter in Chiva, causing streets to turn into rivers and infrastructure to be heavily damaged.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and other officials have vowed to provide all necessary assistance and declared three days of national mourning for the victims. The DANA storm alert system has faced criticism for delays in warning the public, but authorities defended their response, citing the extreme and sudden nature of the storm.

This DANA is the deadliest natural disaster in Spain in terms of fatalities, surpassing previous floods in Biescas (1996) and the Turia (1957), and highlights the urgent need for improved emergency response and infrastructure resilience in the face of increasingly severe weather events.

Rescue phase underway with thousands still trapped

Defense Minister Margarita Robles announced that, with improved weather forecasts, the search and rescue phase for those still trapped and missing will begin on Thursday. She highlighted the uncertainty surrounding the number of missing people. Robles detailed that 15 helicopters and 18 drones from the Military Emergency Unit (UME) are involved, with 22 bodies recovered and 110 people rescued alive.

“These tasks will continue throughout the night, but tomorrow, we have to start the second phase, which is the search and rescue,” she said in an interview on ‘Hora 25’. Robles emphasized that the UME will launch the operation once the area is cleared and the weather improves, with the help of rescue dogs.

The minister assured that both the Army and the Air Force will assist in the rescue efforts using helicopters and drones. She acknowledged the exhaustion and personal challenges faced by the rescue teams but guaranteed that the UME will remain on-site as long as necessary.

Robles mentioned that there are currently no known supply issues, but she would address any that arise. She also noted that several psychologists have been sent to the area to support those struggling to find their families, emphasizing the importance of psychological and military support.

“It is very hard for everyone, and I would like to send all my love, support, and pride in the work carried out by our soldiers from the UME, the Army, and the Air Force,” she concluded.

Blame Game underway as Civil Protection accused of delays

Spain is reeling as people now start to trigger the blame game as disaster relief services face accusations of being slow to react.

The civil protection agency, which is deployed during natural disasters, did not issue an alert until 20:15 local time on Tuesday, by which time significant damage had already occurred. El Mundo highlighted the late warning, noting that hundreds of people were trapped overnight due to road closures and blocked access.

Recriminations are flying on social media, with many criticizing local governments for inadequate preparation. The regional president of Valencia, Carlos Mazón, is defending his controversial decision to eliminate the Valencia Emergency Unit (UVE), which had been established to respond to weather-related emergencies. Critics argue that cost-cutting measures have worsened the impact of extreme weather.

Climate activists and experts have called for urgent action to address climate change, citing it as a cause of the floods. Greenpeace Spain’s executive director, Eva Saldaña, emphasized the real and deadly impact of the climate emergency. Jorge Olcina, a climate scientist, explained that the floods are evidence of climate change altering rainfall patterns, and warned that people need to heed meteorological warnings even when they want to maintain normalcy.

The field of nursing continues to evolve, and with it, the demand for skilled leaders grows. Nurses are no longer confined to bedside care; leadership roles offer them the chance to influence patient care, manage healthcare teams, and contribute to policy development. As healthcare becomes more complex, leadership in nursing is critical for ensuring efficient operations and quality care. However, stepping into these roles involves more than just a change in title. Nurses need to understand what leadership entails, the challenges they may face, and how they can prepare for these new responsibilities.

In this blog, we will share insights into the leadership opportunities available for nurses and what to expect when taking on these roles, from education and skill development to the challenges nurse leaders face in modern healthcare.

The Growing Need for Nurse Leaders

The demand for nurse leaders is rising as healthcare systems become more intricate. With the growing need for coordinated patient care, administrative oversight, and efficient resource management, healthcare organizations are recognizing the importance of strong nursing leadership. Nurse leaders play an instrumental role in guiding teams, managing day-to-day operations, and making strategic decisions that impact both staff and patients.

In hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities, having experienced professionals in leadership positions is essential for delivering high-quality care. These individuals not only support their teams but also help in making critical decisions that improve patient outcomes and streamline processes.

The Role of Education in Nursing Leadership

One of the key steps in preparing for leadership roles is gaining the right education. While clinical experience is important, advanced education can provide nurses with the skills necessary to navigate the administrative and strategic aspects of leadership. Many choose to pursue online masters degrees in nursing to further their education while continuing their work. These programs offer flexibility, allowing nurses to balance their current job with their studies, making it easier to acquire the skills required for leadership positions.

Advanced degrees often include coursework in healthcare management, organizational behavior, and policy development. These topics are essential for nurses looking to lead effectively, as they cover the administrative and operational side of healthcare leadership. With the knowledge gained from these programs, nurses are better equipped to manage teams, implement changes, and lead in various healthcare settings.

Transitioning from Clinical to Leadership Roles

For many nurses, moving from a clinical role to a leadership position can be a significant shift. The responsibilities of a nurse leader extend far beyond patient care. Instead of solely focusing on individual patient needs, nurse leaders must manage larger teams, oversee operations, and contribute to decision-making at the organizational level. This transition often involves taking on tasks such as budgeting, staffing, and developing policies.

While the shift may seem overwhelming at first, it provides nurses with the opportunity to influence healthcare on a broader scale. The ability to impact not only patients but also the staff and the organization as a whole makes leadership roles appealing to many nurses. However, it’s essential for those transitioning into leadership to be prepared for the challenges that come with balancing these new responsibilities while maintaining their connection to patient care.

Developing Essential Leadership Skills

Leadership in nursing requires a blend of clinical expertise and management skills. Nurses in leadership roles must excel in areas such as communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution. Effective communication is particularly important, as nurse leaders need to clearly convey goals and expectations to their teams while also being approachable and open to feedback from staff members.

Strong decision-making skills are equally critical. Nurse leaders are often tasked with making quick yet informed decisions that affect both staff and patient outcomes. Additionally, conflict resolution is an essential skill, as leaders must manage disagreements and resolve issues within their teams.

Career Pathways for Nurse Leaders

There are various career pathways available for nurses who wish to pursue leadership roles. Common positions include nurse managers, nursing directors, and chief nursing officers, each offering different levels of responsibility and influence within a healthcare organization. Nurse managers typically oversee smaller teams and manage day-to-day operations, while nursing directors and chief nursing officers hold higher-level positions, focusing on broader organizational strategy and policy-making.

Choosing the right leadership path depends on an individual’s strengths and career goals. For nurses who enjoy being closely involved with their teams, a nurse manager role may be the ideal fit. On the other hand, those interested in shaping healthcare policies and making high-level decisions may pursue positions such as chief nursing officer.

Looking Toward the Future of Nursing Leadership

As healthcare systems continue to grow and change, there will be an even greater demand for skilled nurse leaders who can navigate the complexities of modern healthcare. Nurse leaders who stay adaptable, continue learning, and prioritize patient care will be well-positioned to make a meaningful impact.

The advancement of technology in healthcare, such as telemedicine and electronic health records, will also require nurse leaders to be proactive in integrating these tools into their teams’ workflows. Leaders who can successfully implement new technologies while maintaining a high standard of care will help shape the future of the nursing profession.

In a nutshell, the path to nursing leadership is filled with opportunities to shape the future of healthcare. As the field continues to evolve, the role of nurse leaders will be crucial in driving meaningful change. The question is, how can we better support and prepare nurses to step into these essential roles? With the right guidance, education, and commitment to growth, today’s nurses have the potential to redefine leadership in healthcare for future generations. Are we ready to invest in that future?

At least 70 people have lost their lives in catastrophic flooding that has swept across Spain, primarily affecting the province of Valencia. The Integrated Operational Coordination Centre of the Interior Ministry confirmed the grim toll, compiling data from various security and emergency agencies. Early reports from Valencian authorities suggested a significant number of casualties.

The relentless weather phenomenon has left a trail of destruction, with dozens still missing. An 88-year-old woman perished in the town of Mira, Cuenca, while six individuals remain unaccounted for in Letur, Albacete. The Spanish Ministry of Defense has deployed portable morgues as fears grow that the clearing of mud-filled towns in Valencia may uncover additional victims. Aerial resources, military psychologists, and trained dogs have been mobilized to aid in the search.

Prime Minister’s Plea and Royal Condolences

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez urged the public to remain vigilant as the severe weather persists. Countless individuals were stranded overnight, seeking refuge on rooftops, in vehicles, or on elevated ground.

King Felipe VI expressed deep condolences to the affected families and warned of the extensive damage to infrastructure and property. He acknowledged the challenges faced by authorities in reaching remote areas and reassured the public that all available resources were being utilized.

Herculean Rescue Efforts

The Valencian premier, Carlos Mazón, highlighted the immense difficulties encountered by rescue teams in reaching those in need. Firefighters, local police, and the Military Emergency Unit (UME) worked tirelessly, even as the Civil Guard faced its own challenges, with two agents missing.

Widespread Disruptions

The heavy rainfall has led to widespread power outages affecting 155,000 people and road closures across multiple eastern and southeastern provinces. High-speed rail services between Madrid and Valencia, as well as the Mediterranean corridor to Barcelona, remain suspended.

Storm’s Path and Impact

The storm is currently moving northward, impacting the eastern and southeastern regions. The interior of Valencia province has borne the brunt of the heavy rainfall, resulting in numerous road closures. Similar conditions have been reported in Teruel, Andalusia, and Castilla-La Mancha, with rail services also disrupted.

Social Media’s Role

Videos circulating on social media, depicting the force of the water and the plight of stranded individuals, have both shocked and aided rescue efforts. These visual records have helped locate those in distress and guide the actions of security forces.

Gota Fría’s Devastating Force

The extreme weather event is attributed to the “gota fría,” or “cold drop,” a phenomenon characterized by a sudden temperature drop along the east coast due to the arrival of cold polar air. The current cold drop in Valencia is considered one of the most severe of the 21st century, comparable to those experienced in 1987 and 1982.

Aviation and Rail Disruptions

Spain’s air traffic control manager, Enaire, reported the diversion of 30 flights at Valencia airport and 19 at Madrid-Barajas. Adverse weather conditions have led to flight disruptions and delays at various airports across Spain, including Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante, and Málaga.

European air traffic has also been affected, with delays and cancellations at London Heathrow, German airports, Zurich, Brussels, and Paris.

Renfe, Spain’s state-owned rail company, has suspended most rail services in Valencia, including high-speed connections to Madrid and Seville. Long-distance and medium-distance services on various routes have also been halted. Additionally, five lines of the Cercanías commuter network in Valencia remain suspended.

Locally, both Pilar de la Horadada and Orihuela have cancelled their upcoming parades and festivities to celebrate Halloween in solidarity with the flood victims. Valencia has also declared 3 days of official mourning throughout the whole of the community.

At least 51 people have died from the floods caused by a “catrastrophic” DANA in the province of Valencia on Tuesday, according to the provisional reports from the Integrated Operational Coordination Centre of the Ministry of the Interior.

Early in the morning, the president of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, spoke of “multiple victims”, but without confirming the exact number “out of respect for the families”.

A tragic figure of loss of human life as a consequence of the major flooding caused by the destructive DANA that hit a large part of the eastern half of Spain on Tuesday with the most affected areas in the province of Valencia.

ADIF, the public company that manages the railway infrastructure, suspended all train travel in the community early in the evening, Albacete, Malaga, Granada and Almeria, as well as the Region of Murcia.

The forecasts of the meteorologists were fulfilled and the worst storm of recent years, which began on Monday night, gained strength throughout the day to end up hitting the Mediterranean coast of the province.

See also: 13 feared Dead in Valencia storms after night of carnage.

“There are mny lifeless bodies and, unfortunately, they continue to appear,” the head of the regional government acknowledged to the media, adding that he could not give more details “out of respect for the families” so that they “can be adequately informed.” In any case, he wanted to send a “message of calm, patience and strength” to the population, “because where they have not been able to reach many areas still is because communications are absolutely impossible.” The emergency services are “prepared and ready” to act – he added – and, if they are not able to reach some places, it is because “either there is a collapse in communications, or because the areas are still flooded.”

The Valencian Community was hit hard by the downpours, especially in the regions of Ribera Alta and Plana de Utiel-Requena. In the latter town, the volume exceeded 309 litres, in neighbouring Turís it reached 299 and in Castelló de la Ribera it reached 266, according to data from the Valencian Meteorological Association (Avamet).

Police were also searching in the town of l’Alcudia for the driver of a lorry who had disappeared due to the flood shortly before 13:00. The man did not answer calls to his mobile phone or contact anyone. His lorry, however, was found parked on a street.

In the province of Valencia, firefighters worked tirelessly and, among other tasks, carried out several rescues of motorists trapped in their vehicles. In one of the rescues, the helicopter of the Provincial Firefighters Consortium evacuuated several motorists from their cars.

Classes were suspended on Tuesday in various municipalities in Valencia and Alicante, as well as on the campuses of the University of Valencia, the Catholic University, the Polytechnic University and the CEU Cardenal Herrera Oria. A closure of schools that will be repeated on Wednesday in cities such as Valencia, Torrent, Alzira, Chiva, Cullera and Algemesí.

In addition to the closures of the A-3 and A-7 motorways – which link the Levante area with Madrid and Catalonia, respectively – in the afternoon there was the suspension of rail traffic on the Madrid-Valencia AVE line, where according to Renfe there were 2,722 passengers affected by the train suspensions.

Added to this were the major problems on several Cercanías lines, as well as on the metro in the capital of Turia. Finally, ADIF decided in the evening to suspend train travel in the Valencian Community until at least ten o’clock on Wednesday morning, when the weather conditions and the state of the tracks will be reassessed again to determine whether traffic can be resumed without safety problems.

Almost all activity in the ports of the city and in Sagunto was paralysed due to the maritime storm. The strong storm also caused multiple failures in the telephone lines, which forced Telefónica technicians to make an extra effort to try to repair the network. In addition, there were local road closures in several municipalities including Chiva, Buñol, Siete Aguas, Simat de la Valldigna, Requena, Alzira or Carcaixent, where the 100 litres per square metre were exceeded. There was also considerable damage caused by a tornado in Benifaió.

The EMU, activates over 1000 soldiers

The Ministry of Defense reports that a total of 1,034 soldiers, members of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), the Third Intervention Battalion, based in the Jaime I barracks in Valencia, were activated in the middle of the afternoon on Tuesday to move to the Utiel-Requena region, where there were numerous people isolated and roads and paths flooded

According to an announcement from the corps just after midnight, its members were “carrying out rescue and evacuation work for people trapped by the floods in Requena, Utiel, Chirivella and Alacuás.”

At Manises airport, meanwhile, ten flights (eight departures and two arrivals) had been cancelled by 8:00 p.m. and another twelve had been diverted (six to Alicante, five to Barcelona and one to Ibiza) as a result of the storms.

The president of the autonomous community, Carlos Mazón, urged the population not to go out on the road, especially in the province of Valencia, and to stay at home. In the case of those people who are outside, he advised them to seek high ground if they are near ravines and riverbeds. “The night is going to be long,” he said.

In the province of Cuenca, due to the storm, 725 passengers remained at the station in the provincial capital, waiting for normal rail traffic to be restored. Renfe announced that, in addition to providing food and drink to passengers, it will establish an alternative plan to continue their journey.

Missing in the mountains

The Provincial Fire Service of the Provincial Council of Albacete (SEPEI), assisted by a helicopter from the Civil Guard, began the search in the early hours of the afternoon for two missing people in the town of Letur (Albacete), in the heart of the Segura mountain range. These are two employees of this Town Hall who were last seen on board a van, a vehicle that later appeared abandoned in a gully.

For several hours they were regularly called by phone without success since the telephone communications in the town did not work throughout Tuesday. Another four people who had gone out to the mountains from the town were also being searched for at nightfall.

In addition, the Red Cross set up a temporary shelter at the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción public school in Letur, as the heavy rains affected many homes and left them uninhabitable. 60 people affected by the floods were taken there. Another 30 people were trapped in their homes and dozens had to take refuge in the town’s bars.

Another town in the province of Albacete affected by this storm was Molinicos, where rainfall reached 120 litres per square metre. One of its access roads was cut off by a landslide.

Floods and hail

The storms that fell during the early hours of Tuesday caused significant damage in Andalusia, closing numerous roads and suspending classes in several schools in the province. In Alora (Málaga) a high-speed train travelling from the capital of the Costa del Sol to Madrid derailed, without causing any injuries.

One of the axles of the front engine derailed as a result of a stream overflowing. The passengers were transferred to another train to continue their journey. Likewise, Adif workers managed to restore service on conventional gauge tracks near Málaga, but train traffic between Gobantes and El Chorro continued to be cut off in the early afternoon.

One of the towns in Malaga that was hardest hit by the storm was Alora, where the floods inundated large areas. Rain gauges recorded around 150 litres per square metre. Several people had to be evacuated by helicopter by the Guardia Civil in the El Puente neighbourhood of Isla Hermosa after the Guadalhorce River overflowed, reaching a water level of 4.2 metres.

In Marbella, a lightning strike caused a fire in a two-storey house. In the Axarquía region, around 100 litres per square metre were recorded during the night.

In neighbouring Almería, the worst part of the storm was borne by the residents of El Ejido. The heavy hailstorms destroyed roofs, cars, street furniture and, above all, crops. According to the Union of Small Farmers (UPA), the storms and hail would have caused damage to crops and facilities in the western Almería region worth around 30 million euros and affected some 11,300 hectares.

In Granada, heavy rains also caused flooding in Baza, Guadix and the Eastern Mountains. In Cúllar, the Civil Guard had to rescue a couple who were travelling in a car with their children – aged 1, 3 and 5 – when they were caught in the floodwaters on a dirt road in the Rambla del Lagarto. Likewise, agents of the armed institute rescued the occupants of a vehicle with a trailer in the district of Tarifa.

The storms also flooded large areas of the Murcia region, with road closures in the towns of Cehegin and Caravaca, where up to 121 litres per square metre were collected. The wind in Lorca reached gusts of around 50 kilometres per hour. This wind and the state of the sea caused a sailboat to sink in the port of Águilas.

A lamppost with six lights has been blown over on the Juan Aparicio (Las Rocas) promenade in Torrevieja by strong winds. The metal column, 12 metres high, was located on the promenade, next to the pedestrian and terrace area.

Fortunately, it fell on the low cliff in front of the sea, causing some damage to a bench located next to the edge of the promenade, between the monument to the Man of the Sea and the sculpture of the Beautiful Lola.

The emergency services of the city lighting team have cordoned off the area with fences and protected the base from which the wiring installation still protrudes.

The pole fell with the first strong gusts of the easterly wind that occurred on Monday night, as the wind reached up to 60 kilometres per hour along some points of the Vega Baja coast.

The strong easterly wind also blew over a palm tree in Torrevieja on the Punta Margalla promenade, opposite the Ruta al Sur terrace.

On inspecting the lighting column, it seems that there is a certain amount of deterioration at the base caused by rust. The corrosion was clearly visible in an image taken last summer by local photographer Joaquín Carrión.

The Valencia region was battered by torrential rains on Tuesday, leading to flash floods that have tragically claimed an unknown number of lives, although, citing police, TVE broadcaster reported there have been at least 13 deaths.

The Valencia region’s leader, Carlos Mazón, confirmed the discovery of multiple bodies but declined to provide specific details out of respect for the victims’ families.

The state weather agency, AEMET, issued a red alert for the region, with some areas like Turis and Utiel receiving over 200mm of rainfall.

After months of a worrying drought, the sky unleashed such virulence that torrents of water, stones and mud swept away everything in their path. Especially in the Magro riverbed.

Cars were dragged along in a sea of mud, classes suspended in seventy municipalities, the port of Valencia and Sagunt closed and the A-3 turned into a real hell leaving Dantesque images. Several tornadoes, in addition, sowed chaos in l’Alcúdia, Carlet, Alginet or Benifaió. A fatal combination of extreme events.

Social media was flooded with distressing videos showing people trapped in floodwaters, clinging to trees, and being rescued by firefighters using helicopters. Some footage even captured a rare tornado.

Emergency services were inundated with calls for help, but the severity of the flooding made it difficult to reach all affected areas.

Scientists attribute the increasing frequency of such extreme weather events to climate change, particularly the warming Mediterranean Sea.

Schools and other essential services were suspended in the hardest-hit areas, and the military was deployed to assist with rescue efforts and assess agricultural damage.

Orihuela Council is gearing up to welcome Santa Claus with a festive atmosphere for children to enjoy, send their letters, and fulfil their wishes. However, the funding being allocated to the activity in Orihuela City is more than double the amount made available to the children of Orihuela Costa.

The Council has tendered the contract in two lots for the installation and assembly of Santa Claus’s Village 2024 in both Orihuela centre and Orihuela Costa. The contract budget is 30,524.67 euros: 20,715.20 euros for the centre of Orihuela, located in the Glorieta Gabriel Miró, and 9,809.47 euros for Orihuela Costa, initially set for the car park of La Zenia shopping centre.

Entrance to the Village: Children will be greeted by two elves leading them through a large arch with Christmas trees. A red carpeted path will guide them to various areas, all adorned with fir trees, lamps, and signposts.

Workshop Area: Elves will be busy in workshops for gift wrapping, sewing, letter writing, and carpentry. Each workshop will feature elves performing tasks related to their specific areas.

Santa’s House: Santa’s house will be located at the back of the square, decorated with a sofa, fireplace, and all the preparations for Santa’s arrival, including a mailbox for letters and a rest area to talk with him and his elves.

Santa Claus Village in Orihuela Costa: Like the Orihuela City setup, the entrance will feature an arch and Christmas trees, leading to areas decorated with fir trees and streetlamps. The village will include a letter writing area, a gift-wrapping workshop, and more.

Opening Times:

Orihuela Centre: December 21 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., December 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., December 23 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with Santa Claus arriving after the city tour.

Orihuela Costa: December 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., December 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with Santa Claus arriving after the city tour.

Get ready for a magical Christmas experience in Orihuela City this year, but perhaps a little less so in Orihuela Costa.

The Civil Guard has seized 13,080 counterfeit products valued at over one million euros in an operation targeting street markets, commercial establishments, and access routes to tourist areas in Alicante province.

The operation, part of “Operation Summer 2024” conducted between July and September, aimed to curb the sale of counterfeit products, spurred by international sporting events like the European Championship, Copa América, and the Paris Olympic Games.

Seized items included football kits, leather goods, lighters, and other branded consumer products.

Operations in Tourist and Urban Areas

During July and August, the Fiscal and Border Patrol of Calpe, the Fiscal Detachment of Denia, Citizen Security officers from the Civil Guard of Calpe, and the Main Guardia Civil Post of Torrevieja intensified efforts in high-tourist markets.

In Benidorm, La Cala de Villajoyosa, and Denia, actions led to interventions at thirteen market stalls.

In Calpe and Torrevieja, controls were carried out on beaches and promenades. In Torrevieja alone, over 350 counterfeit products, including sports equipment, bags, and sunglasses, were seized, leading to the investigation of three men aged 35-56 for crimes against industrial property.

Provincial Actions

In Benidorm, inspections were conducted in three commercial establishments. In Calpe, interventions at thirteen market stalls and four street vendors resulted in the removal of 7,535 counterfeit items. In Crevillente, the Civil Guard, in coordination with Local Police, seized 6,288 counterfeit products from two establishments, investigating two men aged 49 and 54.

Results of the Operation

The operation has removed 13,080 counterfeit products from the illegal market, addressing serious fraud and unfair competition. Seized items include 3,713 sports kits, 3,822 leather goods and textiles, and over 6,200 counterfeit lighters.

To date, 25 people of various nationalities, including Pakistani, Indian, Spanish, Senegalese, Moroccan, and Chinese, have been investigated and charged with crimes against industrial property related to the sale of counterfeit products.

TWO CELEBRATED JERSEY GOLFERS, Harry Vardon and Ted Ray, started out as young caddies on this 6,120 yd links course, and played here once a week on a Sunday afternoon, although they were actually members of La Moye golf club over on the west of the island. Vardon would go on to claim six Open titles and Ray would win the Open in 1912 and the US Open in 1920.

In 1878 a number of Jersey residents decided to lay out a small course on Grouville Common, a tract of sandy heathland with views of impressive Mont Orgueil castle. The club received its Royal warrant in 1879 from Queen Victoria. This members- only club, steeped in tradition, is known as a place where golf’s past and present meet. During WW2 the course was turned into a minefield during the German occupation.

Played along Grouville bay, the 1st tee shot must be placed between the stone walls of Fort Henry, a relic of the Napoleonic wars, on the left of the fairway, and two German gun emplacements on the right, a testing start to the round.

LA MOYE GOLF CLUB

Set spectacularly on sand dunes overlooking St. Ouens Bay, La Moye is an impressive links, measuring 6,797 yds. A great course for seaside golf, but the going is tough when the wind is up. The original course at La Moye was laid out in 1902 by George Boomer, Headmaster of the local school attended by both Harry Vardon and Ted Ray.

La Moye attracted members who were turned away by the Royal Jersey golf club, and it was recorded that Royal Jersey members were amused by the La Moye golfers, who, as tradesmen, played in what outdoor clothing they had, usually riding breeches and leather gaiters. The original clubhouse was the Boomers’ kitchen.

George Boomer’s sons were also excellent golfers, George became head professional at Sunningdale Golf Club, and Aubrey won the French Open five times.

La Moye was damaged to make way for fortifications in the war and the clubhouse was destroyed. The course was renovated during the 1960s under the guidance of Henry Cotton.

Two beautiful courses on a beautiful island where incidentally, I spent my honeymoon, although on that occasion I didn’t think I’d better take my clubs.

THE FALDO SERIES, the only global amateur series for boys and girls with handicaps from +4 to 12, was conceived in 1996, after Sir Nick Faldo’s sixth major triumph.

The non-profit making series consists of 40 events though 30 countries, and was a stepping stone in the careers of Rory McIlroy, Eddie Pepperell and Danny Willett. “We divided the UK into regions, playing on great courses like Royal St. Georges,” said Faldo, “the first Grand Final was won by Nick Dougherty.”

Faldo’s son Matthew who now runs the Series says: “We’re all looking forward to The 28th Junior Tour Grand Final on the 12th-14th November at the Al Ain Equestrian Shooting and Golf Club, Abu Dhabi, where 65 of the world’s best young golfers will compete and our 2024 champion will be crowned.”

According to the blurb, spectators attending this year’s DP World Tour Championship, Dubai at Jumeirah Golf Estates, (Nov 14-17th) will have no excuse to be bored. While the top 50 battle it out “spectators can enjoy free swing clinics, the Trick Shot Boys will dazzle with their brilliance, the ladies will be spoiled at pamper stations and the kids will be entertained with glitter face painting.

Live music will be provided by the fantastic Greg Pearson, (never heard of him either) and the Red Light Party Band will continue the festivities in thrilling style.” They probably won’t even notice the Champion heading for the bus stop.

IN OREGON, USA, an eagle landed on the green, picked a player’s golf ball up in it’s beak and flew off. The surprised golfer said: “I’d been hoping for an eagle all day.”

Until next time: Happy Golfing.

The Consell has authorised the Ministry of Health to claim from the Government of Spain the 1,022.9 million euros that it owes due to the lack of compensation from the Assistance Guarantee Fund and the Health Cohesion Fund, mechanisms with which the central Administration should remunerate the health care provided in the Valencian Community to patients from other autonomous regions and to foreigners.

Specifically, the state Executive owes the Community, through the Assistance Guarantee Fund, 23.1 million euros for assistance in Primary Care to visitors from other communities between July 2012 and December 2013, as well as 798.9 million euros more for assistance to displaced persons in Specialized Care between July 2012 and up to the present.

In addition, the central government is also awaiting payment, through the Health Cohesion Fund, of more than 99.6 million euros for the settlements of the years between 2013 and 2023; as well as another 101.3 million euros for the settlement of the billing generated in the Valencian Community for health care provided to foreigners.

Now the Consell is demanding the payment of the funds not received due to the ineffectiveness of the implementation of the Assistance Guarantee Fund as provided for in Royal Decree Law 16/2012, of April 20, on Urgent Measures to guarantee the sustainability of the National Health System.

Pursuant to the decree, and within the framework of the Healthcare Guarantee Fund, financial compensation for healthcare for people displaced between autonomous communities should also have been implemented, but at present this mechanism has had a very limited scope and is creating significant financial damage to the Generalitat.

Thus, retroactive compensation for assistance provided from July 2012 (date of entry into force of Royal Decree Law 16/2012) to December 2013 in Primary Care to visitors from other communities has remained pending.

More than 199,000 visits per year

In the field of specialised care, the confusing wording of section 5 of article 3 of Royal Decree Law 16/2012 makes it necessary to develop it in regulations for the effective implementation of compensation. Thus, in the information systems of the Ministry of Health, more than 199,000 Specialised Care services provided annually to displaced persons from other autonomous communities are being identified and recorded individually, which represent an expenditure of 77.6 million euros per year that has not been remunerated.

Furthermore, since the entry into force of Law 17/2012, of December 27, on the General State Budget, the Health Cohesion Fund acquired an extra-budgetary character, so that the autonomous communities that, like the Valencian Community, present positive balances in the joint liquidation of the Assistance Guarantee Fund and the Health Cohesion Fund must be compensated by the Ministry of Finance.

Likewise, all healthcare provided to foreign citizens with a European Health Card or from countries with a reciprocal healthcare agreement is billable, but the methodology for calculating the settlement of this billing used by the National Institute of Social Security (INSS) and the Ministry of Health does not respect the rights to payment legitimately acquired by the communities and generates significant losses for tourist autonomous regions such as the Comunitat, with perverse effects and unjust enrichment of some at the expense of others.

Our annual competition for the Presidents Cup and Fundraiser for the Royal British Legion was a fantastic success. This was wholly due to the support of all you lovely people, the staff & management of Drivers Bar & Bistro and our representative from the RBL, Bob Smith.

Thirty of us teed off on time at 11:40 in quite a stiff cool breeze which morphed into a familiar warm sunny Costa Blanca Day after a couple of hours. The course was in very good condition, save for a couple of fairways on the new back nine, so all in all very conducive to some pretty impressive scores as reflected in the leaderboard.

Overall winner and recipient of the Presidents Cup was Cheryl Isacc with a stonking 47pts. Many congratulations Cheryl, your name has been added to our Roll of Honour on the website.

Mens Division Winners;

1st place on c/b with 38pts was Sammy Tumblety. 2nd place on c/b also with 38pts was Noel Collins.

Ladies Division Winners:

1st Place with 47pts was Cheryl Isaac. 2nd Place with 36pts was Rosemary Andersen.

Best Guest with 38pts was George Chisholm.

Nearest the Pin on Hole 3 was Cheryl Isaac, Nearest the Pin on Hole 13 was Martin Langley

Mens Longest Drive on Hole 15 was Phil Lenehan, Ladies Longest Drive on Hole 9 was Anna Marie Dutton

Congratulations to All of you it was pretty impressive stuff

Back at Drivers Bar our presentation dinner was preceded with a recitation by Cliff Morton of an “Ode to the Fallen” followed by a moving delivery of “The Last Post” by Ian Gibson who also said ‘Yorkshire Grace’ (lol) before we tucked in to our delicious meals which were then served.

After dinner Cliff presented the Golf competition prizes and the Presidents Cup in his usual inimitable manner accompanied by much laughter and applause. A bumper raffle followed which was rounded off with the results of the ‘Guess the number of Golf balls in the box’ competition (it was 173 by the way). All of which raised a total of €340 for the Royal British legion, great job everyone.

We couldn’t have done any of the above without the continued hard work, sponsorship and support of Mags, Pete, Glenys & Alan and their team with special thanks to Chef Ben for such a great event dinner.

Much appreciation also to Brenda & Wayne our volunteer helpers,

Pete & Cliff

Orihuela’s tourism department has announced a variety of guided tours for November. These tours cater to different interests and schedules, with options for both weekdays and weekends.

Nature lovers can enjoy hikes focused on the local fauna, including the “Meet the eagle owl in Sierra Escalona” and “The city mill, the magic of sunsets” tours.

Culturally inclined visitors can take a tour of the Palm Grove of Orihuela, accompanied by a poetry recital. The Museum of Sacred Art will also be offering a guided tour with a focus on a Velázquez painting that we featured in last week’s Leader Newspaper, ‘The Temptation of St. Thomas’.

There’s even a coastal route, “The autumn of this Orihuela coast,” that explores the Playa Flamenca area and its rich biodiversity.

The tours are designed to be inclusive, with opportunities to support a local charity (“Orihuela Solidaria”) which invites those taking part in the routes to help with the donation of products for ASOKA, such as food for dogs and blankets, which can be handed in at the Tourist Office.

For more information and reservations, visit the Orihuela tourism website https://www.orihuelaturistica.es

Alicante – The province of Alicante continues to struggle with lower-than-average salaries compared to the rest of Spain. Despite being the fifth-largest economy in the country, Alicante ranks among the lowest in terms of average monthly earnings.

The Salary Gap

The average monthly contribution base in Alicante is around €1,864 gross, which is approximately €204 less than the national average. This disparity has been steadily increasing over the past few years. Factors contributing to this issue include:

Precarious Employment: A significant portion of the workforce in Alicante is employed in precarious jobs, often with lower wages and fewer benefits.

Service Sector Dominance: The province’s economy heavily relies on the service sector, which tends to offer lower-paying jobs compared to industries like manufacturing or technology.

Seasonal Employment: The tourism-driven nature of the Alicante economy leads to seasonal employment, which can result in lower annual earnings.

The Impact on Per Capita Income

The lower average salary has a direct impact on per capita income in Alicante. With a per capita income of €19,705, the province ranks among the lowest in Spain. This lower income level can affect the quality of life for residents and limit opportunities for economic growth.

Addressing the Issue

To improve the economic situation in Alicante, the Institute of Economic Studies of the Province of Alicante (Ineca) suggests the following strategies:

Boosting Business Productivity and Competitiveness: Encouraging businesses to increase their size, productivity, and competitiveness can lead to higher wages and better job opportunities.

Attracting Investment: Attracting strategic investments and forging partnerships can contribute to economic growth and job creation.

Long-Term Effort: Improving the economic situation in Alicante is a long-term endeavor that requires sustained effort and strategic planning.

While challenges persist, addressing these issues and implementing effective strategies can help to improve the economic outlook for Alicante and its residents.

ORIHUELA COSTA – The Orihuela Council has announced the start of asphalt resurfacing works in the Los Balcones urbanization and surrounding streets. The project, valued at €14,000, aims to address significant road deterioration, including potholes and surface damage.

Infrastructure Councillor Víctor Valverde emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This project responds directly to the concerns raised by local residents.” The contract has been awarded to Tizor hormigones y asfaltos SL.

The primary focus of the works will be on Calle Miño and Ebro, where extensive cracking and water damage have compromised the road surface. Calle Miño will undergo a comprehensive resurfacing process, involving milling and the application of a new asphalt layer, as well as pothole repairs. Calle Ebro will primarily target localized patching to address specific areas of damage.

The project is expected to take approximately one week to complete.

Almost 4 out of 10 vehicles circulating on the roads do so without a valid technical inspection (ITV). To reduce these numbers and improve road safety and air quality in our cities, local councils now have a tool at their disposal that allows them to detect vehicles that are not complying with their obligation.

This is the Data Intermediation Platform (PID) of the DGT, from where the General State Administration, Autonomous Administrations and Local Municipalities can consult all data relating to vehicles, drivers and sanctions, among which is the status of the technical inspection of the vehicle.

The vehicle registration certificate is checked with cameras deployed in different parts of the region and then each number plate is checked in the DGT Registry to see if it has a valid vehicle registration certificate or not.

Alicante City Council is one council that is currently managing the introduction through the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (Femp), municipal sources explain, although at the moment there is no date for its implementation.

Albacete is already using the PID information system to detect vehicles driving without an up-to-date ITV and fining them. The Albacete municipal police notes in its 2023 Activity Report, that of the 1,647 traffic complaints filed, 1,064 were for not having passed the ITV inspection on time.

According to Guillermo Magaz, managing director of AECA-ITV, says, “this is an procedure that can be carried out in any Spanish city at this time and that would undoubtedly help to improve road safety and reduce pollution. It should be remembered that only through the ITV can maintenance faults be detected that could put the lives of the vehicle’s occupants and other road users at risk. In addition, the ITV also helps to ensure that vehicles do not pollute more than permitted.”

Not having an up-to-date ITV can be a danger to road users and the environment. It also carries a fine of 200 euros. If the officers stop the vehicle, the driver would usually receive a permit to travel only to a test centre during the following 10 days. In addition, if a vehicle is involved in an accident while the ITV is not in order, the insurance companies would not be responsible for any damage or compensation.

The National Police have arrested an international fugitive in the province of Alicante who is subject to an International Arrest Warrant. The arrested man, aged 27, who is accused of being part of a criminal organisation dedicated to drug trafficking and the production of large quantities of the psychotropic substances, 3-CMC and 4-CMC, was caught in a public car park in Torrevieja on Sunday.

According to the police, the detainee was allegedly responsible for the disposal and transportation, contrary to current regulations, of large drums of waste and substances in quantities exceeding 7,000 Litres, including toluene, methylamine, hydrochloric acid and dichloromethane.

These substances were transported in unlabelled plastic containers and without the necessary safety measures. They were also apparently dumped on the ground, on public roads and in sewers, endangering people’s lives and health, as well as the quality of water, air and the earth’s surface, and causing the destruction of flora and fauna.

The arrested man also provided the criminal group with the transport necessary to move the waste, for which he was well paid.

The arrested man has been brought before the Alicante Court, where he will be questioned using the appropriate telematic means. The police have confirmed that the detainee had no criminal record in Spain.

3-CMC and 4-CMC

3-CMC and 4-CMC are synthetic drugs belonging to a group of substances called cathinones, similar to amphetamines. They are created in clandestine laboratories and sold illegally, often in powder or crystal form.

These substances are used to produce stimulating and euphoric effects, such as feeling more energetic, happy or excited. However, their consumption can be very dangerous. Negative effects include increased heart rate, high blood pressure, anxiety, hallucinations and risk of addiction.

The main problem is that, as it is manufactured illegally, it is not known for certain how much or how strong each dose is, which can cause serious damage to health and even risks of overdose.
