43.
It’s a long way from India’s crowded capital Delhi, but after just two months in Auckland, international student Anuradha Bhattacherjee feels at home.

 44.
“I’m not at all homesick. Everybody feels like a family here. If I’m in class, everybody’s interacting. I can talk to anybody. The professors are always available,” she told Newshub.

 45.
Bhattacherjee is studying a masters in architecture at Unitec, which is experiencing a mini-boom in international student numbers from India.

 46.
“We have grown about 110 percent in terms of the demand from India compared to 2019 figures,” said Don Sirimanne, head of product marketing and international market development at Unitec-Te Pūkenga

 47.
Pre-COVID, total international student numbers peaked in 2016 at 130,000. That dropped dramatically to 41,000 in 2022.

 48.
The most recent figures show for the first eight months of last year it climbed back to 59,000.

 49.
And student arrivals for 2024 show a February spike with Immigration reporting more to come, with a rise in visa applications.

 50.
“About 20 percent increase so that’s really excellent a good base and we have a good pipeline,” Education NZ general manager of marketing and communications Geoff Bilbrough said.

 51.
A pipeline that was once a big export earner. The sector made New Zealand $3.5 billion in 2019.

 52.
Although students are coming back, revenue is still down about 50 percent.

 53.
And the biggest players, universities, say it will take another three or four years to rebuild the industry.

 54.
Taking it slowly is actually the plan, so the broken educational promises and scams during the 2016 peak can be avoided.

 55.
Some of those were about gaining residency, but Education New Zealand says only 25 percent of students end up staying permanently.

 56.
“Around 60 percent of students leave immediately as they graduate and then within three years 75 percent of international students have left New Zealand,” Bilbrough said.

 57.
But staying is the plan for Bhattacherjee. She loves the lifestyle.

 58.
“I would want my parents to be here, too. I’m a single child, so I would want my parents to be here with me. I want to stay here. It’s really good,” she told Newshub.

 59.
Because, she says, unlike in Delhi she can breathe here.

 80.
Destiny Church leader Brian Tamaki has been organising protests about the group in recent months.

 81.
Events in Rotorua and Hastings were called off due to “public safety concerns” last month with death threats sent to performers.

 82.
Scheduled shows would have seen two drag performers reading books about inclusivity and acceptance to children.

 83.
In a post to its Facebook page, Rainbow Storytime said: “We are very upset and disappointed to announce the cancellation of the Rainbow Storytime NZ nationwide tour which we were looking at doing later on this year.”

 84.
“We know there will be MANY sad kids and parents out there but with the current climate and Erika Flash now staying on in London, we are going to press pause on everything we are doing.”

 85.
Currently, nearly $26,000 has been raised through a Givelittle page to take a claim of defamation against Destiny Church to court.

 86.
The cancellation announcement added that the group’s energy was needed to take the “hateful, icky” group to court to try and create “widespread change”.

 87.
“This is the ultimate action in anti-bullying and the ultimate message of what our Storytimes are about so we want to do our best.”

 88.
Tamaki described the cancellation on his social media as a “victory.”

 89.
Rotorua Lakes Council said last month that Rainbow Storytime was a family-friendly event aimed at younger children, including book-reading, singing and dancing.

 90.
“The event is focused on acceptance, anti-bullying, inclusion, being kind and having confidence in yourself. It has been a popular event in many other libraries and registrations for the event at Rotorua Library were full.

 91.
It acknowledged people’s right to peaceful protest but said “multiple attempts” to contact protest representatives asking them to respect the space, library users and those who had chosen to attend the event went unanswered.

 92.
“Without these assurances, [the] council needed to review its security plan for Rainbow Storytime.

 93.
“We considered the hostile dialogue on social media and the rapid spread of misinformation about the performers and the purpose of the event as key factors.”

 94.
Hastings library staff and council service received a “large number” of messages prior to last month’s cancelled event in Hastings that accused it of being a platform for the sexual grooming of young people.

 95.
The council attributed the cancellation to “disinformation being spread about an upcoming library programme”.

 96.
“There is no sexual content in these programmes, they are age appropriate, and designed to be entertaining and fun. It is the parents’ choice whether their children attend, and the programme takes place at an upstairs section of the library away from the general public library area.”

 154.
“The heartbeat of the lake has gone,” says the man petitioning Rotorua Lakes Council to help get the dry-docked and in liquidation Lakeland Queen back cruising.

 155.
Chairman of the recently formed Save Our Iconic Lakeland Queen Society, Marinus Koppe, made the comment at a council meeting on Wednesday morning.

 156.
“How did this happen?” he asked, before saying he was not looking for an answer to that right then.

 157.
“We are here to urge [the] council to assist us to bring back this icon of over 37 years.”

 158.

 159.
A journey on troubled waters

 160.
The paddle steamer first dry-docked in October 2021 having hibernated during the pandemic. Since then, the lakefront was redeveloped and the Lakeland’s jetty was found to be in disrepair.

 161.
The cost of a new jetty was finalised in 2022 and the owner, Terry Hammond, previously told Local Democracy Reporting the council confirmed he would need to pay the $345,000 to $460,000 cost.

 162.
He said he was told he would then need to gift the jetty to iwi and Te Arawa Lakes Trust would lease it back to his business.

 163.
The business went into liquidation last month.

 164.

 165.
A Queen’s ransom

 166.
Koppe told elected members the tourist attraction put millions of dollars into the Rotorua community when it operated and helped promote the city to “many thousands”.

 167.
“Visitors still ask, ‘where is that paddle steamer?’.

 168.
“We hope it is not going to the scrap yard.”

 169.
Koppe said the society believed the council obstructed access to the Lakeland Queen jetty during the lakefront redevelopment and referred to the Te Arawa Lakes Settlement Act that enabled jetty owners to use, occupy, access, repair and maintain, remove or demolish at any time.

 170.
He called on the council to shorten its new walkway to provide the steamer access. He also said it needed to reconnect services to the jetty, such as power, and upgrade both the council and the Lakeland’s jetties.

 171.
This would enable any potential buyers to “come forward”.

 172.
Koppe later clarified during the meeting he was not in touch with the liquidators and was representing those in the community wanting to see the “icon back into the lake”.

 173.

 174.
‘Come to the table’

 175.
He said he would appreciate an “around-the-table discussion”.

 176.
Rotorua mayor Tania Tapsell said clarification on what was said was needed to check accuracy would consider the petition and provide a response in writing “shortly”.

 177.
Infrastructure and environment general manager Stavros Michael previously said the council did not pay to build jetties used exclusively by commercial operators.

 178.
He said it had done what it could, including trying to secure government funding; waiving slippage charges since 2021; making repairs to the old jetty; commissioning concept designs for a replacement one; and offering to cover consenting costs.

 212.
“That does tend to limit the rainfall potential for places like Canterbury, maybe Marlborough and the east coast as well,” said NIWA meteorologist Seth Carrier.

 213.
Not the news farmers were hoping for.

 214.
“The challenge we have now, is this morning we had really good frost, so the growth we get now… even though it’s a nice sunny day – there’s very limited chances of growth from now on, so the feed we’ve got is what we’ve got,” said Birkett.

 215.
But it could be good news for skiers, with early snow looking like a possibility in autumn.

 216.
“Things could be on the cooler side, so if you get a front coming through the South Island with those cooler temperatures, it could open up the door for maybe some snowfall early in the season,” said Carrier.

 217.
Although the season might not be a long one, NIWA says there’s a 70 percent chance of La Niña forming by the end of winter, which usually brings warmer and wetter weather.

 218.
Luckily, it’s unlikely to result in the extremes of the previous La Niña.

 219.
“This is a first year La Niña, whereas the previous one we had, we had 3 years of La Niña in a row,” said Carrier.

 245.
“President, we are with you”. It is one of the powerful phrases that the number two of the Socialist Party and first Vice-President of the Government of Spain, María Jesús Montero, said during her speech Saturday at the Federal Committee of the Socialist Party in support of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

 246.
“We are with you to give you our love and gratitude,” Montero continued. Sánchez has had his agenda frozen for two days now “to reflect” on his possible resignation. The decision follows a court proceeding opened against his wife Begoña Gómez for alleged corruption. Sánchez has said the case was fabricated by the right and far-right in the country to dismantle his influence.

 248.
Sánchez is expected to announce Monday whether he decides to resign from government.

 249.
In response to the accusation against Sánchez, the Socialist Party has called for a committee to express support for the prime minister. In an unprecedented move, the meeting was open, recorded live, and streamed through big screens in the street.

 250.
“Stop the lies,” Montero said, as she added that the prime minister and his family are suffering “verbal violence” in a “dirty campaign against them.”

 251.
Outside the Socialist Party’s headquarters, thousands expressed their support for Sánchez as they waived flags of Spain and the Socialist Party. Hundreds travelled from all across the country to Madrid to join the mobilisation.

 252.
“We came from Pontevedra. I made the decision to come to show that he has our support,” a participant told Spanish news channel RTVE. “We are going to ask him to keep going, we will not let him fall,” another participant said.

 253.
Sánchez has also received support from international officials, such as President Gustavo Petro of Colombia and President Lula da Silva of Brazil, who have condemned the attacks of the right against the prime minister.

 254.
Protests against Sánchez have also erupted in the past days. The opposition is asking the prime minister for explanations on the accusations against his wife. They have also voiced their discomfort with his decision to freeze his agenda as he seeks to make a decision.

 255.
The main opposition party, the Popular Party, has launched a campaign that seeks to gather letters from Spaniards that want to tell Sánchez what concerns them. The party is asking the government to listen to the problems society has.

 277.
The stolen items were valued at tens of thousands of dollars.

 278.
Police in a statement urged, “anyone who saw suspicious activity on or near the Bankwood Road, Chartwell school between Monday 8 April and Wednesday 10 April” to call 105″.

 288.
Revive a Smile served people who were desperate and in pain with nowhere else to go, Russell added.

 289.
She said the service is “life-changing” for a lot of patients who otherwise couldn’t access dental care.

 290.
“We were their lifeline, so to speak, and they’ve just completely deprived the entire community of this. It’s horrendous.

 292.
It wasn’t just the Hamilton community that was affected, she stressed, pointing to the clinic’s travels around the North Island.

 293.
“They’ve actually deprived hundreds of people all over the North Island of this service.”

 294.
Some of the vulnerable people the clinic saw had life-threatening infections, Russell said.

 295.
“It’s just completely devastating. We just want the things back.”

 296.
The burglar or burglars would struggle to sell the items anyway, she added.

 297.
“They’re worthless to them, but they are worth a lot to us.

 298.
“We have a lot of very happy people that walk out of our clinic, and now we have a lot of devastated people that are not gonna be able to get that experience.”

 299.
Russell urged anyone with information to get in touch with police – and if the thief or thieves were looking on, she asked them to return the equipment, anonymously if they preferred.

 300.
She said the stolen items would take weeks to replace, even if the money was raised, and a lot of the equipment would need to be specially ordered.

 301.
“We really just want it back so that we can continue working,” Russell said.

 302.
“We can’t just go down to the local Noel Leeming or something and buy these instruments.”

 303.
The charity planned to set up a Givealittle account to fundraise for new equipment if it was needed.

 335.
Fifty former laboratory rats are looking for forever homes as part of a unique rehoming project sponsored by New Zealand’s largest university.

 336.
In New Zealand, around 300,000 animals were used for research, testing and teaching each year. Thousands were killed — some never having been needed for tests.

 337.
The New Zealand Anti-Vivisection Society (NZAVS) and the University of Auckland launched the adoption programme on Wednesday to coincide with World Day for Animals in Labs.

 338.
The scientific community were aligned on the issue of animals being used for science, said the university’s animal welfare officer Jodi Salinsky.

 339.
“Scientists would not choose to use animals in research if they believed that there were alternative ways that were widely accepted, accessible and validated by the scientific community.”

 340.
The society would lobby the National-led coalition Government to allocate funding for animal-free research and for rehoming of animals used and bred for science.

 341.
Until the programme was funded, the rehoming project would be fuelled by donations.

 342.
Tara Jackson, executive director at the Anti-Vivisection Society, said giving an animal used or bred for science a “forever home” was an incredible act of kindness.

 343.
“We are delighted that the University of Auckland is showing real leadership in the science community by working with us to ensure that as many animals as possible are rehomed in Auckland.”

 344.
Jackson said there would be “animals aplenty” to rehome until a New Zealand government committed to funding the programme.

 345.
“If more Aucklanders can find it in their hearts to open their home to rats who have started off in science, then they will not only instantly bolster the IQ rating of their household — thanks to how smart rats are — but will be amazed at how loving, easily trained, and playful these animals really are!”

 377.
“No one argues that you shouldn’t operate within a budget in a public organisation, but this is something you plan for and implement throughout the year.

 378.
“This type of last minute, ‘Oh we’re a bit short, we have to do this,’ is classic poor management – and to do that in a hospital setting is just frankly irresponsible.”

 379.
Campbell said it was unclear where the pressure to save money was coming from.

 380.
“Unless it means that the government has now imposed some further restrictions on spending that weren’t there before, in which case it sheets home directly to the Minister of Health who should not be making these last-minute calls on a hospital service.

 381.
“It’s very much the wrong way to be running this.”

 382.
Campbell said any intention to reduce hospital spending was misplaced, and Te Whatu Ora had a legal and moral responsibility to its staff and patients.

 383.
“The primary responsibility that the leadership of Te Whatu Ora has is to the Pae Ora legislation and its principles and the Te Mauri o Rongo health charter that it’s entered into with its staff. In these actions it’s completely over-riding both of those.”

 384.
Te Whatu Ora released the $105m figure to RNZ on Friday afternoon after a series of leaks about which health districts faced what targets. The savings ordered range from 0.6 percent to 1.2 percent of a district’s budget.

 385.
Health NZ was funded almost $23 billion for 2023-24.

 386.
Health unions have warned the constraints will impact medical care, a claim denied by Health NZ and Health Minister Shane Reti.

 387.
Various government departments and ministries have been ordered to slash their budgets by up to 7.5 percent, cuts which the opposition said were being made to fund tax cuts for the likes of landlords.

 388.
“Health NZ is not subject to the same government directive for savings as some other departments,” Reti said on Friday.
