The Seminoles head north for their third ACC road series of 2025

No. 9 Florida State baseball (25-7, 8-4) looks to get back on track as they take on No. 25 Virginia Tech (23-10, 9-6) for a three-game set beginning on Friday. The Seminoles are in the midst of their worst stretch of the 2025 season, losing three in a row coming into the weekend, with two run-rule blowouts to Wake Forest and a heartbreaking defeat to Florida on Tuesday. Link Jarrett told the media on Thursday that he did not notice any “out of the ordinary frustration” from his team, but clearly, FSU can not let their slide spiral further.

Not only are the Noles getting beat up on the field, but they are also banged up off it. Jarrett announced that his injury report now includes nine names, which is nothing uncommon this time of year, but still a difficulty for FSU to manage. The head coach ruled out midweek starter Evan Chrest for the remainder of the season, called Blaydon Plain and Connor Hults “not close”, and stated Jaxson West was day-to-day. In one note of positive injury news, OF Chase Williams should be back in the mix and provide a boost in the field and on the base paths.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech may be the surprise team in the ACC this year, with series wins over Wake Forest and Louisville. VT comes into this weekend winners of three in a row, taking the final two games over Notre Dame, and defeating No. 20 Troy in the midweek, 3-1. The Hokies will benefit from being the home team, with chilly temperatures forecast for the entire weekend, including a possibility of a low 40s first pitch temperature tomorrow night. VT ranks 11th in the country in K/9 with 10.9, 17th in walks taken, and second in doubles with 89.

Florida State received good news on the recruiting trail yesterday as three-star 2026 DMV DB Sean Johnson committed to the ‘Noles.

Safeties coach Evan Cooper is the lead in Johnson’s recruitment, as the Seminoles like Johnson as a safety. He cited FSU’s history as DBU along with the relationship with coaches as primary reasons for his pledge. He’ll take his official visit in June.

When asked for a quote about the commitment he simply said ‘It’s DBU not PBU’. Jalen Ramsey, Derwin James, Leroy Butler, Terrell Buckley, Deion Sanders, Ronald Darby, Lamarcus Joyner, Samari Rolle, and many, many others would certainly agree.

Norvell impressed by FSU’s response after challenge to bring the edge: “We did not lack intensity today”

The Seminoles will return to the practice field Friday

Florida State football, after putting together a few less-than-below-expectation practices, was challenged by head coach Mike Norvell on Tuesday to begin to bring the “edge” that FSU is looking to re-establish as the standard in Tallahassee.

For their part, they rose to the occasion, putting on display the energy Norvell’s been trying to coax out of his squad.

“We did not lack intensity today. That was a good practice in a sense of guys coming out with purpose,” he said, though he cautioned that “we gotta make sure we’re maintaining control of emotions at times.”

“Some of the inconsistency of what I saw earlier in Tuesday’s practice, I thought we responded...[but with] all the intensity, all the passion, the push to improve, we [have to] maintain focus on fundamentals, techniques, doing things the right way.”

The intensity was visible team-wide in Norvell’s eyes, saying that there were some great battles in the trenches while receiver Squirrel White, who is acclimating after coming back from being limited by injury, got a nod for his physicality on what Norvell called his favorite play of the day: “he’s not the biggest receiver in the world, [but] had a big-time block there out on the perimeter.

Addressing offensive line injuries, Norvell remained optimistic about Micah Pettus, Gunnar Hansen, Jaylen Early and Richie Leonard saying “Micah got work today, Gunnar got work today, Jaylen Early, who I didn’t really expect a whole lot of, [is] getting more and more. Richie’s been getting some work...you’re seeing those guys get back in there and seeing some progress,”

The Seminoles will return to the practice field Friday, an “important” day according to Norvell that will feature a heavy emphasis on real-game situational reps, giving the squad a little bit of extra rest ahead of the final trio of practices set for next week.

“We’re going goal line, red zone. It’ll probably be one of the shortest practices we’ve had, but tomorrow’s gonna be one that I want ‘em to remember.”

Along with Norvell, tight end Randy Pittman and defensive lineman Deante McCray spoke with the media — all three interviews can be seen below.

Baseball America updated its predictions for end-of-the-year awards, replacing its preseason pick of Texas A&M outfielder Jace LaViolette with Florida State shortstop Alex Lodise to take home national Player of the Year honors (as well as Clemson’s Cam Cannarella for ACC Player of the Year) while swapping out Jamie Arnold for LSU’s Kade Anderson for national Pitcher of the Year and FSU’s Joey Volini for the same honors in the ACC:

Lodise has exploded onto the national stage in 2025, transforming from a solid contributor into one of college baseball’s most dangerous bats. After hitting .288 with nine homers as a sophomore, he’s slashing an eye-popping .448/.500/.821 with 12 home runs, 40 RBIs, 10 doubles and two triples—and even hit for the cycle. Lodise still chases out of the zone at a 34% clip, but he’s significantly cut his strikeout rate while nudging his walk rate upward. The result? A more complete hitter who’s more than doubled his ISO and become a cornerstone of the 13th-ranked Seminoles’ success. He’s well on his way to setting new career-highs in nearly every major statistical category and has been the centerpiece of Florida State’s lineup. As a cherry on top, Lodise has seen his draft stock ascend a considerable amount and is now in the top-two round discussion.

While Arnold is enjoying another strong season, it’s actually his teammate in Volini who has led the Seminoles’ pitching staff. After making just three starts last spring at South Florida, Volini has flourished thus far in Tallahassee to the tune of a 2.56 ERA with 66 strikeouts to just 11 walks across 45.2 innings. A polished strike-thrower, Volini is around the zone and generates whiffs with all four of his offerings.

The freshman shines in low scoring ball game

Florida State softball is back on the west coast. The ninth ranked Seminoles took on the Saint Mary’s Gaels on Wednesday.

The FSU lineup faced Mia Nishikawa for the Gaels. Isa Torres got things started with a single, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With a runner in scoring position, Kennedy Harp drove in Torres.

After a 1-2-3 inning of the Seminoles in the top of the 7th, Francik looked for the complete game shut out. The last inning started off rocky for the freshman, as two singles had the Gaels threatening. However, with two on base, Francik shut the door and got the needed outs to close out the game. Francik tossed seven innings of shut out softball, racking up 12 strikeouts along the way.

Redshirt senior is in the portal with a “do not contact” tag

For the second year in a row, Florida State basketball’s Jamir Watkins has entered the transfer portal while also declaring for the NBA Draft.

Watkins averaged 18.4 points per game for the Seminoles this year as well as 5.7 rebounds, earning second-team All-ACC honors.

He announced his intention to enter the NBA Draft on social media, saying:

Thank you, FSU. When I transferred to Florida State, I was looking for an opportunity to grow, to compete, and to be part of something special. What I found was a family.

Thank you to my coaches, teammates, and the fans for your belief, support, and love. To my family and loved ones – particularly my mother, father, sister, and grandmother – thank you for the constant support and sacrifices you’ve made. Becoming the first person in my family to graduate college is one of the proudest moments of my life, and I couldn’t have done it without the support of the FSU community.

I’m excited for what’s ahead as I officially declare for the NBA Draft. Thank you, FSU, for helping shape the man and the player I am today. I’ll always be a Seminole.
