Hopes that inflation is finally heading back in the right direction swept through Wall Street Wednesday and ignited a record-setting rally for U.S. stocks.The S&P 500 jumped 1.2 percent to top its prior high set a month and a half ago. The Nasdaq composite added 1.4 percent to its own record set a day earlier, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 349 points, or 0.9 percent, to beat its all-time high set in March.Relief came from the bond market, where Treasury yields eased to release some of the pressure on the stock market. The moves resulted from strengthening expectations among traders that the Federal Reserve may indeed cut its main interest rate this year.Stocks that tend to benefit the most from lower interest rates helped lead the market. Homebuilders were strong on hopes that cuts by the Fed could lead to easier mortgage rates, with Lennar, D.R. Horton and PulteGroup all rallying more than 5 percent. Big Tech and other high-growth stocks also rode the wave of expectations for lower rates, and Nvidia’s gain of 3.6 percent was the strongest force pushing the S&P 500 upward.Real-estate stocks in the S&P 500 climbed 1.7 percent, while stocks of electricity companies and other utilities rose 1.4 percent. The dividends they pay look better to investors when bonds are paying less in interest.The optimism came from a report showing U.S. consumers had to pay prices for gasoline, car insurance and everything else in April that were 3.4 percent higher overall than a year earlier. While that’s painful, it’s not as bad as March’s inflation rate of 3.5 percent.
Perhaps more importantly, the slowdown was a relief after reports for the consumer price index, or CPI, earlier this year had consistently come in worse than expected. That string of disappointing data had washed out forecasts for the Federal Reserve to lower its main interest rate soon.The federal funds rate is sitting at its highest level in more than two decades, and a cut would goose investment prices and remove some of the downward pressure on the economy.“There was a lot lying on today’s CPI print to prove that disinflation was simply delayed these last three months and not derailed,” according to Alexandra Wilson-Elizondo, co-chief investment officer of the multi-asset solutions business in Goldman Sachs Asset Management.A separate report showed no growth in spending at U.S. retailers in April from March. It was a weaker showing than the 0.4 percent growth economists expected.Slowing growth in retail sales could be seen as a positive for markets, because it could reduce the upward pressure on inflation. But a stalling out also raises worries about cracks forming in U.S. consumer spending, which has been one of the main pillars keeping the economy out of a recession. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is no longer in a life-threatening condition after he was shot in an assassination attempt when leaving a government meeting on Wednesday, a government minister said.The gunman shot Fico, 59, five times, initially leaving the prime minister in critical condition and undergoing surgery hours later on Wednesday evening.”I was very shocked … fortunately as far as I know the operation went well — and I guess in the end he will survive … he’s not in a life-threatening situation at this moment,” Slovak Deputy Prime Minister and Environment Minister Tomas Taraba told the BBC’s Newshour.Taraba said one bullet went through Fico’s stomach and a second hit a joint.News outlet Aktuality.sk cited an unnamed source saying Fico was out of surgery and in stable condition.

The election for the speaker of the first half of the upcoming 22nd National Assembly has triggered controversy due to a personal endorsement by main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) Chairman Lee Jae-myung of a particular candidate, which is expected to have a significant influence on the race.Critics argue that it is inappropriate for the speaker, who is expected to maintain neutrality between the ruling and opposition parties, to be influenced by an individual like Lee, and for the DPK to systematically eliminate other candidates.On Thursday, the DPK will hold its primary for the speakership of the 22nd Assembly that will start on May 30. Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been sidelined in Korea’s recent rebound in exports as outbound shipments have mainly been fueled by large companies that make semiconductors, cars and ships, according to data and industry officials Wednesday.Fueled by a recovery in global demand, exports of chips and cars led the overall export growth, which broke a year-long losing streak in October 2023 and continued to rise for seven consecutive months through April, according to the Korea Customs Service (KCS).”Such an export revival is very encouraging for Korea’s export-dependent economy, but unfortunately, it overshadows the difficulty SMEs face in selling their products overseas,” Noh Mean-sun, a researcher at Korea Small Business Institute, said. “Under the circumstances, SMEs receive little attention and are often overlooked in the country’s recovery trajectory.”The researcher noted SMEs “showed hardly any presence” in the latest growth of exports and gross domestic product (GDP).Citing KCS data, he noted that SMEs’ exports from January to March rose 2.2 percent from the previous year, far lower than the 11.5 percent year-on-year gain displayed by conglomerates over the same period.During the first quarter, Korea posted a 1.3 percent quarter-on-quarter GDP growth, which beat all estimates and marked the sharpest expansion in more than two years.
Net exports, defined as the value of a country’s total exports minus the value of its total imports, contributed 0.6 percentage point to the GDP components in the first quarter.The contribution of net exports exceeded that of private spending and construction investment, each contributing 0.4 percentage point to GDP components in the first quarter.Exports, which rose 9.7 percent year-on-year to $220.1 billion from January to April, were primarily driven by large companies, as indicated by additional KCS data.Among the key items, semiconductors accounted for 18.6 percent of overall outbound shipments in the first four months of this year. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in China on Thursday to meet with counterpart Xi Jinping as he seeks greater support from Beijing for his war effort in Ukraine and his isolated economy.This is Putin’s first trip abroad since his March re-election and the second in just over six months to China, an economic lifeline for Russia after the West hit it with unprecedented sanctions over its military offensive in Ukraine.Russian television broadcast footage of Putin being welcomed by Chinese officials and an honor guard as he got off his plane for the two-day state visit. The state news agency Xinhua also reported his arrival.Xi, who returned last week from a three-nation tour of Europe, has rebuffed Western criticism of Beijing’s ties with Moscow, enjoying cheap Russian energy imports and access to vast natural resources, including steady gas shipments via the Power of Siberia pipeline.It is a relationship the leaders described in 2022 as one of “no limits.”

“I feel like I took a lot of (supplements).” U.S. LPGA player Hyo Joo Kim (29-LOTTE) has once again won a tournament on home soil.
Kim fired a 4-under 68 with five birdies and one bogey in the final three rounds of the Aramco Series Korea ($1 million purse), a Ladies European Tour (LET) event, on Wednesday at New Korea Country Club (par-72) in Goyang-si, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea.
With a final total of 10-under-par 206, Kim was crowned the inaugural champion of the Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF-Korea by three strokes over World No. 8 Charley Hull (7-under-par 209).
Kim, who shot 4-under par on the first day of the tournament, never relinquished the lead over the course of the three rounds and was delighted with her wire-to-wire victory. For her victory, she earned $75,000 (approximately $130,000) in prize money.
After the second round was postponed due to rain the day before, Kim played the remainder of the tournament on the final day and went into the third round with a two-stroke lead, but her <a href="https://manifold.markets/totopickpro1" title="game">game</a> never wavered.

Kim won the fourth round of the KPGA Classic ($700 million in prize money) at Golf Zone County Yeongam 45 (Par 72-7556 yards) in Yeongam, Jeollanam-do, on Wednesday with five birdies and two bogeys for a final score of 33 points. He finished one stroke ahead of Jang Yubin, who finished with 32 points.
He took home 140 million won out of the tournament’s total prize money of 700 million won. Kim also secured two years of KPGA Tour seeding (2025-2026) and 1,000 Genesis Points for his victory.
The tournament was played using a modified stableford format, with two <a href="https://manifold.markets/majortotositetop1" title="points">points</a> for a birdie, five points for an eagle, one point for a bogey, and three points for a double bogey or worse.
The win continued Kim’s special connection to Yeongam, where he won his first career title at the Bizplay Electronics Newspaper Open at Cosmos Rings in Yeongam, Jeolla Province, last September.
Jang Yubin Jang, who won his first KPGA Tour event as an amateur at the Gunsan CC Open in August last year, went for his first victory as a professional but fell short by one point. Lim Ye-taek finished in sole possession of third place with 30 points, while Moon Do-yup, Jung Tae-yang and Park Eun-shin tied for fourth with 29 points.
Kim, who has two wins in Yeongam, said after his victory, “I like the links course. I feel energized when I come to this area. It’s exciting. I tried to revive the momentum from my win at the nearby Cosmos Links,” he laughed. “I didn’t play the way I wanted to in the first round. I missed a lot of birdie chances. Especially when I made back-to-back bogeys on the 10th (par-5) and 11th (par-4), I was playing with the mindset of ‘this tournament is about finishing in the <a href="https://www.majortotosite.top" title="토토사이트">토토사이트</a> top three,’ and I think that’s what kept me going the whole way,” he recalled.
Kim Chan-woo, who has been on the rise since winning his first title last year, said, “My playing style changed after my first title. Before I won, I was just blindly looking at the pin and hitting it. After I won, I looked at the fairways and greens more broadly. My golf has been going well since then,” he confessed.
About his caddie, he said, “She started caddying at the Honors K Solago CC Hanjangsang Invitational in 2022. Her name is Kim Hye-jin, born in 1996. I made my first win and then my second win with her, so I want to continue with her. She doesn’t know golf. She just gives me water and wipes the ball,” he laughs.
“I want to win the KPGA Championship, which is the most prestigious tournament in Korea, and if I get the chance, I will try to win the Genesis Grand Prize,” Kim Chan-woo said.
