Italians and Cosmos break the season series

With their 4-2 win against reigning NPSL Champions Elm City Express, the Cosmos move on to the next round and face off against the Brooklyn Italians in the North Atlantic Conference Championship.

In the previous round, the Cosmos needed extra time to get past the Express. Despite Elm City scoring first, Bledi Bardic matched the reigning champion’s 2 goals in the first half. After a scoreless second half, the two clubs entered extra time where Wojciech Wojcik and Zaire Bartley scored to advance New York.

The Elm City Express are no strangers to the big show themselves, having won the NPSL Championship last season. In this year’s NPSL regular season, they finished 4th in the Northern Atlantic Conference. As with everyone else in the conference, they lost to Cosmos B. New York stunned The Champions 5-0 in their first match, but the Express find themselves in a position to extract revenge tonight.

Even though the Cosmos may have won big in the regular season, they have to stay vigilant in the playoffs. This week, Jonathan Borrajo talked about the importance of not being complacent in the playoffs:

So now we have another big moment, and this 10-0 season will be quickly forgotten unless we focus now on July 11 and make a deep run if not win this whole thing.”

A win against Elm City would see the Cosmos playing another match with a home field advantage on Saturday at Commisso Stadium. Head Coach Carlos Mendes describes the importance of playing at home:

One last tune up before the playoffs

In their final match of the 2018 NPSL season, New York Cosmos B will face Kingston Stockade FC.

In their last match, the Boys in Green played in one of their closest matches of the season against Hartford City FC. A second half goal from Captain Danny Szetela was all that separated that kept New York undefeated in with a game left to go. Darwin Espinal added another goal to his spectacular season in the match as well. The Cosmos official site highlighted this week the multiple scoring threats the club has with 13 different goalscorers in their nine matches

In their last match, Stockade, beat Boston City FC 1-0. A win against the Cosmos could allow them to sneak into the NPSL playoffs. Kingston Stockade’s season may end after this match, but the infamous startup club scored a big off the field win with an incoming $3.8 million dollar upgrade to their stadium. I’m looking forward to owner Dennis Crowley’s annual report on the financials and growth of the club, it’s always a great read.

Two matches left until the playoffs

Today Cosmos B approach the end of their NPSL Season when they match up against Hartford City FC.

The Cosmos continued their steamroll season last week against reigning NPSL Champions Elm City Express. Woteck Wojcik and Darwin Espinal kicked off the scoring in the first half. Danny Stezela’s penalty kick and goals from Bledi Bardic and Ivan Berterame put the Express away in the second half.

The next victim on New York’s NPSL tour is Hartford City FC. Hartford, a potential playoff opponent for the Cosmos, are doing pretty well in the NPSL this campaign. In their last three matches, Hartford drew New York Athletic Club, beat Greater Lowell, and lost to the Rhode Island Reds. The Cosmos will have a fine tune-up for the playoffs in this one.

In preparing for this match Cosmos B scimaged local side New York Rough Riders. They also have signed Travis Pittman, who featured for the 2015 NPSL Champion Cosmos B side.

Will the reigning NPSL Champions dethrone the Cosmos?

This weekend the Cosmos kick off at Hofstra against The Elm City Express.

In their last match, the Cosmos remained undefeated against the Seacoast United Mariners, winning 4-2. For New York, Neeskens opened the scoring and Bardic grabbed New York’s second. Newcomer Jalen Brown, nycomos.com’s featured player this week, scored the go-ahead goal in his first start and Darwin Espinal capped off scoring with a late penalty kick to secure the Cosmos three points and the continued pride of the undefeated run.

The villain of the week this time around is Elm City Express, who last year won the NPSL championship in their inaugural season. This campaign, they are find themselves on the outside looking in of the NPSL playoff picture and a win against New York would put them only one point away from the coveted 4th playoff spot. With their championship experience, Elm City could be a serious threat to New York’s goal of an undefeated season.

New York’s opponent, the Seacoast United Mariners, have not been having the greatest of NPSL campaigns as they have yet to find a win. In their most recent match, they were defeated 4-0 by New York Athletic Club.

Defender Garrett Halfhill could be a key performer to tomorrow’s match. Featured on the Cosmos’ official site this week, Halfhill talks about taking some time off from the game, before coming back and playing for FC Cincinnati and then the New York Cosmos. He discusses the pride defenders have in achieving a shutout:

”For us, that is scoring a goal. It’s been frustrating at times because the last couple of weeks we have switched off for a few minutes in a game and it has hurt us. As a defender, you leave a game with a clean sheet, the job is done. You’re a unit as a back four. The goalscorers tend to get a lot of publicity and defenders are typically consistent and just do their jobs. ”I think that’s why defenders love defending. When you do have those games, where you avoid those minor mistakes and you end up with a clean sheet or leave the game, it’s extremely satisfying. It’s the same type of feeling as scoring a goal. You know you did your job that day. You don’t need the recognition for it. You just feel good as a unit.”

Halfhill and the rest of the Cosmos kick off against Seacoast United tomorrow at 3pm in Maine.
