The film footage was digitally captured, encrypted, and staked as the first space eBook NFT. 198.
But in the summer months, in particular, it becomes so flooded with people that it can become difficult to enjoy – not to mention the stifling temperatures of up to 31C.

 199.
However, there are ways to experience an essence of Rome without subjecting yourself to these conditions – and that’s in Portugal, where the country’s third city has been dubbed the ‘Portuguese Rome.’

 202.
Ever heard of Braga? A smaller city in the north of Portugal, northeast of Porto, Braga is the less touristy sister of Lisbon and Porto, which rack up between 6 and 3.7 million tourists each year respectively.

 203.
Earlier this year, the prestigious World Travel Awards named Braga in Portugal as Europe’s next emerging destination.

 204.
A mainstay of the Roman empire, Braga has had much significance in Portugal’s history. The city is home to beautiful architecture, ancient buildings and ruins, making it a great place to visit if you fancy yourself a bit of a culture vulture.

 205.
Things to do in Braga

 206.
Famous for its religious heritage, Braga is inundated with beautiful buildings to marvel at.

 207.
Portugal’s most photographed church, Bom Jesus do Monte, is located in Tenoes, just outside Braga, but it has an impressive Baroque stairway leading up a hilltop.

 208.
The hill is a staggering 116 metres high with around 580 steps, zigzagging to the top for a panoramic view of this 1700s beauty.

 212.
Elsewhere, the Chapel of São Frutuoso was constructed in the sixth century AD, making it one of the oldest buildings in the entirety of Portugal.

 213.
According to tradition, the chapel was built to replace an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Asclepius, AKA, the god of medicine and good health.

 257.

 258.

 259.
How to get to Braga

 260.
The easiest way to get to Braga is to fly, with return flights starting from around £74.

 261.
If you’re travelling from the Big Smoke, there are flights available from London Gatwick to Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport to nearby Porto, but sadly, Braga doesn’t have its own airport.

 262.

 264.
However, Porto is only 40km away, accessible via bus, which takes around 40 minutes. If you’re looking to drive, it’ll take around 36 minutes.

 265.
If you’re coming from up north, there are flights to Porto Airport for around £100 return, but the route is more convoluted. Since there isn’t a direct route between Manchester and Porto, you’ll need to stop off either via Barcelona El Prat or Amsterdam.

 266.
When to visit Braga

 267.
If you’re in search of heat, the best time to visit Braga is undoubtedly the summer.

 268.
In June, temperatures reach balmy highs of 23C, while in July and August the mercury can reach 24C and 25C.

 269.
If the sun isn’t your thing (but equally, you don’t want to freeze), then the rest of the year temperatures don’t typically dip much below 10C.

 270.
In January and February, these can reach highs of 14C and 15C, while in November it remains a pleasant 17C.

This will ensure the continuous upgrading and iteration of enterprise industrial technologies, and promoting the rapid development of new energy industries in the local and even western regions with services.

 351.
GB News chief executive Angelos Frangopoulos has announced a redundancy round at the opinion-led broadcaster, seeking to cut 40 roles.

 352.
It is the first major round of cuts at GB News, whose most recent accounts, covering the year to May 2023, showed an operating loss of £42.4m.

 353.
Frangopoulos announced the redundancy round at a town hall on Friday afternoon. Staff were informed at another town hall last week that forthcoming changes at the business may result in the cutting of some roles.

 354.
The business is currently appealing for staff open to taking voluntary redundancy to come forward, offering up to two months’ salary and possible payment in lieu of notice as enticement.

 355.
One staffer at the channel told Press Gazette there was “a real ‘last days of Saigon’ vibe in the office right now”.

 356.
A GB News spokesperson declined to comment.

 357.
Frangopoulos told the Lords Communications and Digital Committee last month that he was “very confident” GB News could become self-sufficient financially, “but we have a lot of work to do”.

 358.
The most recent company accounts for GB News put its staff headcount at an average of 295 across the year, up from 175 in the 2021/22 financial year.

 359.
A 40-person reduction would be equivalent to a 14% cut if the 295 figure remains correct.

 360.
GB News has faced a partial advertiser boycott since it first launched in August 2021. In November it created a paid membership scheme for the first time, promising members access to exclusive commentary from presenters, behind the scenes footage and access to events.

 377.
But the industry-wide backslapping after this year’s big race left me a little queasy and was premature in the extreme, for several reasons.

 378.

Getty

 379.
The new-look Grand National has divided opinion[/caption]

 380.
Though others would have you think otherwise, the changes to the Aintree big’un have not solved the supposed National ‘problem’ — we are always going to be reliant on a huge slice of luck when it comes to fallers escaping injury.

 381.
Just think how different the vibes would have been last Sunday morning had the defending champ Corach Rambler done himself some serious harm when he fell when loose at the second fence.

 382.
Granted, last year’s race felt like a low point, what with the Animal Rising extremists delaying the race, the death of Hill Sixteen at the first fence and the subsequent flak the sport received from every direction.

 383.
If racing chiefs were ever going to react to outside pressure, it was after the 2023 renewal.

 399.
But in performing this latest piece of plastic surgery, it feels like the race has lost the final slice of its soul.

 400.
Of course, there were much more drastic changes to the race 11 years ago, when they ripped the old timber fences out and replaced them with more forgiving plastic ones.

 401.
But for a decade I thought we’d struck the perfect balance. It still looked and felt like the National and we had some absolutely vintage results — think Pineau De Re, One For Arthur and Many Clouds.

 402.
From 2013 to 2018, we didn’t have a single horse death in the race, before a little spate of fatalities from 2019 onwards.

 403.
It was always a nip your bum cheeks together kind of watch. Dangerous, exciting, unpredictable, and the ultimate test of horse and jockey. It’s not any of those things any more.

 404.
There are a handful of races each year before which I get butterflies in the build-up, and the ‘Nash’ was always one. Sad to say, I didn’t have a single flutter in the old belly this year, and the race itself lacked totally in drama.

 405.
And, with the new reduced field size, it will now become the preserve of the most powerful yards. The days of the National fairytale are a thing of the past.

 406.
Dear old Kitty’s Light snuck in at the bottom of the weights, but a horse of his ability won’t stand a chance against the Grade 1 calibre beasts coming over from Ireland, not unless they sprout a fifth leg.

 407.

 408.

 409.
Checks are not consistent

 411.

 412.

 413.
ONE gripe I have with racing’s rulers is their lack of consistency.

 414.
At Newmarket on Thursday, Charlie Hills’ newcomer Lovemeforareason reared up, took a heavy tumble and got stuck under plastic rails in front of a packed parade ring during a live ITV broadcast.

 415.
Whether or not she was hurt, she gave herself a huge fright. I thought it was a 1.01 job she’d be scratched.

 416.
But a vet checked her over and let her run — and she promptly finished a distant last.

 417.
Now, just the other day, trainer John Berry was left miffed and out of pocket when his horse, Merrijig, was scratched after giving himself a small cut above one eye in his horsebox.

 418.
Vets admitted it wasn’t a welfare issue, but said it could ‘upset racegoers’.

 419.
If we are now scratching horses based on ‘perception’, how can they justify letting Lovemeforareason run?

 420.
Is it one rule for the big yards and another for the small’uns?

 421.

 422.
Perhaps the most worrying news in the National wash-up was the dramatic drop-off in viewing figures on ITV.

 423.
They reached a peak of 6.1 million, down from 7.5 million last year and over 10 million a decade or so ago.

 424.
Is that down to the coverage itself, which sometimes has a forced-fun, rose-tinted spectacle feel about it? Might be.

 425.
It could be down to poor promotion of the big day, or simply the fact people don’t watch as much TV as they used to.

 426.
But I’m not buying the excuse we’ve been fed about the 4pm off-time or the fact it was a sunny day having a negative impact on the numbers. That’s just cobblers.

 427.
Maybe people just don’t love the race like they used to. After last week, even fewer will.

 455.
WE give our kids yoghurt and cheese to help them “grow strong”, but forget about our own bone health as we age.

 456.
Adults’ bones constantly remodel themselves, so as old bone tissue is removed, new bone forms.

 457.

Olivia West

 458.
From 40, however, less is replaced and from our fifties bones get significantly weaker – this is especially so for women as their hormones change during menopause.

 459.
Some people lose bone tissue faster than normal or are at risk of osteoporosis.

 460.
This means they are at greater risk of a fracture.

 461.
Exercise maintains strength in the bones, just like it does in the muscles.

 462.
It’s never too late to start exercising, and if you’re middle-aged, I implore you to get into the habit now.

 463.
As we age we might become more immobile or have health conditions that get in the way of exercise.

 464.
But any weight-bearing exercise, even walking or dancing, maintains bone strength.

 465.
So keep moving as much as you can.

 466.
Pay attention to calcium in your diet, from dairy and dark leafy greens.

 467.
Vitamin D is important too, and found in red meat, oily fish and egg yolks – though a daily supplement is advised as our main source is sunlight.

 468.
Sardines are also a great source of both calcium and vitamin D.

 469.
Here’s a selection of what readers have asked this week.

 470.
Mouth so dry I can’t swallow

 471.
Q) I HAVE had a problem with my throat for quite a while.

 472.
My throat is so dry that I struggle to swallow because there is no saliva in my mouth.

 473.
It mostly happens when I awake in the morning and occasionally during the day.

 474.
Can you tell me why and what I can do about it?

 475.
I suffer from hypertension and type 2 diabetes.

 476.
A) Do you breathe through your mouth at night due to a blocked nose or snoring, for example?

 477.
If you snore and have daytime sleepiness, please read about sleep apnoea on the NHS website, and if you think you have it inform your GP.

 479.

 480.

 481.

 482.
Let’s consider other potential causes; Dry mouth (xerostomia) can be a side effect of many medications, especially those that treat hypertension and diabetes.

 483.
Ramipril in particular is known to cause dry mouth.

 484.

 485.

 486.

 490.

 491.

 492.

 493.
Additionally, people with diabetes are more prone to dry mouth.

 494.
When the blood sugar is too high, you can become dehydrated, decreasing saliva production.

 495.
Similarly, low blood sugar triggers a stress response that can also reduce saliva production.

 496.
Managing diabetes and hypertension is very important.

 497.
But tinkering with your medications on your own is not a good idea!

 498.
Discuss adjusting your medications or exploring alternatives with your GP.

 499.
In the meantime, stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, eating fruits and vegetables and limiting alcohol and caffeine.

 500.
You can also try sugar-free hard sweets or gum to help boost saliva production.

 504.
‘My GP is insisting on putting a camera down through the mouth but it is very scary for me to go through this procedure,’ says one reader[/caption]

 505.
Q) I HAVE been suffering from upper tummy pain under my rib cage for three years.

 506.
It is worse in the morning, sometimes after I eat in the evening.

 507.
I’ve seen my GP several times and had two scans.

 508.
So far my bloods are normal.

 509.
But this pain is alarming, especially because I lost one of my sisters to ovarian cancer.

 510.
My GP is insisting on putting a camera down through the mouth but it is very scary for me to go through this procedure.

 511.
Is there another way they can find out what is wrong with me? I am in my late 60s.

 512.
A) It is reassuring that your blood tests have been normal, but further investigations are indeed essential to identify the under- lying cause of your pain.

 513.
The symptoms you describe are quite suggestive of gastrointestinal disease, such as inflammation to the lining of the stomach, hiatus hernia, or a stomach ulcer.

 514.
The fact that it has been going on for three years lowers the suspicion of gastrointestinal cancer, but doesn’t rule it out entirely.

 515.
An endoscopy, which is the camera test you mention, would allow the medical team to actually look at the food pipe (oesophagus), stomach and the first part of your small intestine.

 525.
It is considered the best test for looking at these parts of the body, especially because it allows for biopsies to be taken if necessary.

 526.
My advice is to have a discussion with your GP about what your specific fears are, as they may be able to reassure you.

 527.
You are usually offered the option of having a numbing throat spray and sedation, to make you drowsy during the procedure.

 528.
The endoscopy would be carried out by a trained specialist doctor or nurse and would only take approximately 15 minutes.

 529.
If that still sounds too scary then you could ask to explore if an alternative test is available at your local hospital.

 530.
Alternatives to upper endoscopy may include CT or MRI scans, barium swallow or capsule endoscopies.

 532.
Are hot legs linked to my condition?

 533.
Q) IN July 2022 I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and prescribed co-careldopa.

 534.
The dosage increased when, a year later, I began getting hot legs and feet at night.

 535.
In December 2023 I was given transdermal patches but the issue has continued to worsen.

 536.
The hospital said they could find no connection between my symptoms and Parkinson’s.

 537.
My GP has suggested it could be a circulation problem and prescribed gabapentin.

 538.
He said it would help me sleep better but, if anything, it’s getting worse.

 539.
Do you have any suggestions for what could be wrong?

 540.

Getty

 541.
Hot, achy legs and feet could be related to other factors, such as vascular issues, musculoskeletal conditions or neuropathic pain[/caption]

 542.
A) I’m not a specialist in this area, but experiencing hot, achy legs and feet is not a typical symptom of Parkinson’s or a side effect of co-careldopa (levodopa/carbidopa).

 543.
Medications like co-careldopa can cause sleep disturbances or indeed exacerbate existing sensory symptoms.

 544.
Your hot, achy legs and feet could be related to other factors, such as vascular issues, musculoskeletal conditions or neuropathic pain (ie, sharp, shooting, or burning sensations due to nerve damage).

 545.
When nerves become overactive, they can send out too many pain signals to the brain, leading to discomfort or pain.

 546.
Gabapentin works by calming down these over-excited nerves and is therefore sometimes an effective treatment for neuropathic pain.

 547.
It can however cause dizziness, drowsiness, or fatigue – particularly when you first start the medication.

 548.
Given your complex medical history, it is a good idea to speak to your doctor again to investigate the underlying cause(s) further.

 549.
If there is concern about poor circulation to the legs then a Doppler ultrasound can assess this further, as it measures the blood flow through your blood vessels.

 550.
If you are still having no joy then it may be worth asking for an appointment with the specialist who looks after your Parkinson’s disease.

 552.
THE NHS is calling people to get a spring Covid booster jab this week.

 553.
Top-ups will be offered at pharmacies and walk-in centres until June 30.

 554.
Steve Russell, of NHS England, said: “Covid-19 can still be very dangerous for older people and those with a weakened immune system.

 555.
“Over time, immunity – either from the virus or from a previous vaccination – can fade.

 556.
“So it is vital that those who are at higher risk top up their protection.”
