56.
The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) “has no reason to believe these six cases are connected,” the department said in a news release addressing the online rumors Sunday.

 57.
The bodies of the half dozen women were found within 100 miles of each other on the sides of roads, in woods or in secluded rural areas from February through May.

 58.
The causes of death in a majority of the cases have not been revealed — with just one being ruled a homicide thus far, while some others have been considered suspicious.

 59.
Social media users have implied that the cases are connected after multiple law enforcement agencies said they are in contact with each other to see if there are any similarities among the women’s deaths, according to the PPB.

 60.
“These discussions have led to some anxiety and fear in our community, and we want to provide reassurance that the speculation is not supported by the facts available at this point,” the bureau said.

 61.
Portland detectives are investigating the death of one of the six women — 22-year-old Kristin Smith, of Gresham — whose remains were found in a wooded area in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood on Feb. 19. She was reported missing nearly a month earlier, on Dec. 22, 2022.

 62.
The cause and manner of her death is undetermined, according to the Medical Examiner.

 150.
Angry protestors Sunday demanded justice outside the Light of the World Church, also known as La Luz del Mundo, in East Los Angeles.

 151.
The leader of the Mexico-based church is currently in prison serving a 17-year sentence for sexually abusing girls in his congregation. Protestors claim the sexual abuse is continuing, even though the leader is in prison.

 152.
Voicing their anger toward La Luz del Mundo’s leaders, protesters Sunday said they believe the church is covering up a deep-rooted problem of sexual abuse that the congregation chooses to ignore.

 153.
“My mom went through it at a very young age. She came out whenever the story repeated itself. She regrets not coming out sooner, but she was afraid,” a woman named Jaime said. “Everybody around her belonged to the church. How do you come out and say something happened to you? My mom wanted to run.”

 154.
Other protesters also claimed they or their family members were sexually abused when they were in the church.

 155.
The leader, Naasón Joaquín García, pleaded guilty to sexually abusing girls in his church and was sentenced to 17 years in prison. García, who is considered the “apostle” of Jesus Christ by his followers, had vigorously fought the charges until he abruptly pleaded guilty in 2022.

 156.
Founded in 1926, García is a third-generation leader of the Mexico-based megachurch, and protestors say the abuse dates back to the beginning.

 157.
La Luz del Mundo has more than 2,000 locations – including East Los Angeles – and claims to have millions of followers worldwide.

 158.
García’s loyal followers continue to stand by him, and he still address his congregation from prison.

 159.
NBC4 reached out to the church about Sunday’s protest and allegations but did not immediately receive a response. However, in a statement following García’s sentencing, the church said, “We publicly manifest our support for the apostle of Jesus Christ. Our confidence remains intact in the full knowledge of his integrity, his conduct and his work. The apostle will continue ministering for the church.”

 160.
Meanwhile, advocates continue to urge potential victims to come forward, fearing that congregants are being forced to stay quiet about abuse.

 161.
“They’re no men of God. They don’t believe in God. I’m here because I want to tell the members of La Luz del Mundo they’re lying,” a protester named Rachel said.

 193.
Branden Colvin Sr.’s body was recovered Saturday, city spokeswoman Sarah Ott said. Two other men — 51-year-old Ryan Hitchcock and 60-year-old Daniel Prien — are still unaccounted for. Colvin, 42, is the first person confirmed to have died in the collapse.

 194.
No other details were immediately released.

 195.
The Quad-City Times reported that Colvin’s son, Branden Colvin Jr., graduated from high school Saturday. He and other family members had been at the collapse site almost constantly, hoping for a miracle.

 196.
The discovery of Colvin’s body came a day after authorities announced that the search for survivors had been completed, with attention turning to shoring up the structure so recovery efforts could begin.

 197.
The remains of the six-story apartment building were constantly in motion in the first 24 to 36 hours after it collapsed on May 28, which officials said posed a risk to rescuers who were trying to search for survivors.

 198.
City officials had said earlier that Colvin, Hitchcock and Prien had “high probability of being home at the time of the collapse.”

 203.
Authorities have said that searching the building was extremely dangerous — and that it was constantly shifting and at risk of further collapse, putting rescuers at great risk. An Iowa task force completed a search for survivors on Thursday and began focusing on shoring up the structure for recovery efforts.

 204.
“We are doing the best we can to balance the building conditions and the safety of our responders,” Fire Chief Mike Carlsten told reporters during a briefing after the collapse. He said conditions have forced a response that may take “days and weeks” instead of what ideally would have been minutes or hours.

 205.
Mayor Mike Matson has said the debris pile “could be a place of rest for some of the unaccounted.”

 210.
Work to bring down the building was moving forward amid questions about why neither the owner nor city officials warned residents about potential danger even after a structural engineer’s report issued just days before the collapse indicated a wall of the century-old building was at imminent risk of crumbling.

 211.
Documents released by the city show that city officials and the building’s owner were warned for months that parts of the building were unstable.

 212.
Tenants also complained to the city in recent years about a host of problems they say were ignored by property managers, including no heat or hot water for weeks or even months at a time, as well as mold and water leakage from ceilings and toilets. While city officials tried to address some complaints and gave vacate orders to individual apartments, a broader evacuation was never ordered, records show.

 251.
BALASORE, India (AP) — The derailment in eastern India that killed 275 people and injured hundreds was caused by an error in the electronic signaling system that led a train to wrongly change tracks and crash into a freight train, officials said Sunday.

 252.
Authorities worked to clear the mangled wreckage of the two passenger trains that derailed Friday night in Balasore district in Odisha state in one of the country’s deadliest rail disasters in decades.

 253.
An Odisha government statement revised the death toll to 275 after a top state officer put the number at over 300 on Sunday morning. The officer spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to reporters.

 254.
Jaya Verma Sinha, a senior railway official, said the preliminary investigations revealed that a signal was given to the high-speed Coromandel Express to run on the main track line, but the signal later changed, and the train instead entered an adjacent loop line where it rammed into a freight loaded with iron ore.

 255.
The collision flipped Coromandel Express’s coaches onto another track, causing the incoming Yesvantpur-Howrah Express from the opposite side also to derail, she said.

 256.
The passenger trains, carrying 2,296 people, were not overspeeding, she said. Trains that carry goods are often parked on an adjacent loop line so the main line is clear for a passing train.

 257.

 258.

 259.
Verma said the root cause of the crash was related to an error in the electronic signaling system. She said a detailed investigation will reveal whether the error was human or technical.

 260.
The electronic interlocking system is a safety mechanism designed to prevent conflicting movements between trains. It also monitors the status of signals that tell drivers how close they are to a next train, how fast they can go and the presence of stationary trains on the track.

 261.
“The system is 99.9% error free. But 0.1% chances are always there for an error,” Verma said. To a question whether the crash could be a case of sabotage, she said “nothing is ruled out.”

 262.
On Sunday, a few shattered carriages, mangled and overturned, were the only remnants of the tragedy. Railway workers toiled under the sun’s glare to lay down blocks of cement to fix the broken tracks. A crew with excavators was removing mud and the debris to clear the crash site.

 263.

 264.

 265.
At one of the hospitals nearly 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the site, survivors spoke of the horror of the moment of the crash.

 266.
Pantry worker Inder Mahato could not remember the exact sequence of events, but said he heard a loud bang when the Coromandel Express crashed into the freight. The impact caused Mahato, who was in the bathroom, to briefly lose consciousness.

 267.
Moments later when he opened his eyes, he saw through the door that was forced open people writhing in pain, many of them already dead. Others were frantically trying to get out from the twisted wreckage of his rail car.

 268.
For hours, Mahato, 37, remained stuck in the train’s bathroom, before rescuers scaled up the wreckage and pulled him out.

 269.

 270.

 271.
“God saved me,” he said, lying on the hospital bed while recuperating from a hairline fracture in his sternum. “I am very lucky I am alive.”

 272.
Mahato’s friends weren’t so lucky. Four of them died in the crash, he said.

 273.
Meanwhile, many desperate relatives were struggling to identify the bodies of their loved ones because of the gruesomeness of the injuries. Few others were searching hospitals to check whether their relatives were alive.

 274.
In the same hospital where Mahato was recovering from his injuries, Bulti Khatun roamed outside the premises in a dazed state, holding an identity card of her husband who was onboard the Coromandel Express and traveling to southern Chennai city.

 275.

 276.

 277.
Khatun said she visited the morgue and other hospitals to look for him, but was unable to find him.

 278.
“I am so helpless,” she said, sobbing.

 279.
Fifteen bodies were recovered on Saturday evening and efforts continued overnight with heavy cranes being used to remove an engine that settled on top of a rail car. No bodies were found in the engine and the work was completed on Sunday morning, said Sudhanshu Sarangi, director-general of fire and emergency services in Odisha.

 280.
The crash occurred at a time when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is focusing on the modernization of the British colonial-era railroad network in India, which has become the world’s most populous country with 1.42 billion people. Despite government efforts to improve safety, several hundred accidents occur every year on India’s railways, the largest train network under one management in the world.

 281.

 282.

 283.
Modi visited the crash site on Saturday and talked to rescue officials. He also visited a hospital to inquire about the injured, and spoke to some of them.

 284.
Modi told reporters he felt the pain of the crash victims. He said the government would do its utmost to help them and strictly punish anyone found responsible.

 285.
In 1995, two trains collided near New Delhi, killing 358 people in one of the worst rail accidents in India. In 2016, a passenger train slid off the tracks between the cities of Indore and Patna, killing 146 people.

 286.
Most such accidents in India are blamed on human error or outdated signaling equipment.

 343.
China’s defense minister defended sailing a warship across the path of an American destroyer and Canadian frigate transiting the Taiwan Strait, telling a gathering of some of the world’s top defense officials in Singapore on Sunday that such so-called “freedom of navigation” patrols are a provocation to China.

 344.
In his first international public address since becoming defense minister in March, Gen. Li Shangfu told the Shangri-La Dialogue that China doesn’t have any problems with “innocent passage” but that “we must prevent attempts that try to use those freedom of navigation (patrols), that innocent passage, to exercise hegemony of navigation.”

 345.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told the same forum Saturday that Washington would not “flinch in the face of bullying or coercion” from China and would continue regularly sailing through and flying over the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea to emphasize they are international waters, countering Beijing’s sweeping territorial claims.

 346.
That same day a US guided-missile destroyer and a Canadian frigate were intercepted by a Chinese warship in the strait dividing the self-governed island of Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own, and mainland China. The Chinese vessel overtook the American ship and then veered across its bow at a distance of 150 yards (about 140 meters) in an “unsafe manner,” according to the US Indo-Pacific Command.

 347.
Additionally, the US has said a Chinese J-16 fighter jet late last month “performed an unnecessarily aggressive maneuver” while intercepting a US Air Force reconnaissance aircraft over the South China Sea, flying directly in front of the plane’s nose.

 353.
Li suggested the US and its allies had created the danger, and should instead should focus on taking “good care of your own territorial airspace and waters.”

 354.
“The best way is for the countries, especially the naval vessels and fighter jets of countries, not to do closing actions around other countries’ territories,” he said through an interpreter. “What’s the point of going there? In China we always say, ‘Mind your own business.’”

 355.
In a wide-ranging speech, Li reiterated many of Beijing’s well-known positions, including its claim on Taiwan, calling it “the core of our core interests.”

 365.
In his speech the previous day, Austin broadly outlined the US vision for a “free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific within a world of rules and rights.”

 366.
Austin said the US was stepping up planning, coordination and training with “friends from the East China Sea to the South China Sea to the Indian Ocean” with shared goals “to deter aggression and to deepen the rules and norms that promote prosperity and prevent conflict.”

 367.
Li scoffed at the notion, saying “some country takes a selective approach to rules and international laws.”

 368.
“It likes forcing its own rules on others,” he said. “Its so-called ‘rules-based international order’ never tells you what the rules are and who made these rules.”

 369.
By contrast, he said, “we practice multilateralism and pursue win-win cooperation.”

 370.
Li is under American sanctions that are part of a broad package of measures against Russia — but predate its invasion of Ukraine — that were imposed in 2018 over Li’s involvement in China’s purchase of combat aircraft and anti-aircraft missiles from Moscow.

 371.
The sanctions, which broadly prevent Li from doing business in the United States, do not prevent him from holding official talks, American defense officials have said.

 443.
Thousands of people filled the streets of West Hollywood Sunday for the annual WeHo Pride Parade on the final day of Pride weekend, with an ongoing street festival and an evening concert by Carly Rae Jepsen also on tap.

 444.
A presentation of honors for Pride icons and allies was also scheduled. The honorees are model/activist Laith Ashley, who will receive the Breakthrough Icon Award; actress Niecy Nash-Betts and wife Jessica Betts, who will receive the Trailblazer Icon honor; and actress Melissa McCarthy, who was named WeHo Pride’s 2023 Ally Icon. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” will be celebrated as this year’s Drag Icon, with show host/judge Michelle Visage expected to accept the honor on behalf of the program.

 445.
“Our WeHo Pride Parade Icons embody queer joy and fierce allyship by creating spaces where our community can be celebrated, whether that’s on the red carpet or directly through their art and advocacy,” West Hollywood Mayor Sepi Shyne said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to celebrate the impact our Icons have in creating a more evolved and accepting world.”

 446.
The WeHo Pride Street Fair runs from noon to 10 p.m. Sunday at Santa Monica and San Vicente boulevards, featuring an array of LGBTQ+ community groups and allied organizations.

 447.
WeHo Pride weekend officially began Friday with a “Friday Night @OUTLOUD” concert at West Hollywood Park featuring Idina Menzel, Jessie Ware, Shangela and Tinashe. Grace Jones headlined Saturday night’s concert and Carly Rae Jepsen will headline Sunday night.

 448.

 449.
Saturday’s event included the Women’s Freedom Festival, with performances from “emerging LGBTQ and BIPOC women and non-binary musicians, comedians, poets and activists.” The festival was followed at 6 p.m. by the annual Dyke March.

 450.
Sunday’s parade along Santa Monica Boulevard began at Crescent Heights Boulevard and was set to move west to Robertson Boulevard.

 451.
Streets throughout the festival area were closed, and attendees were urged to review parking and access information online at www.wehopride.com. The city will provide free shuttle service during the weekend to transport people to WeHo Pride events. Information is available at https://go.wehopride.com/3qfnasc.

 452.
San Vicente Boulevard will be closed until 10 a.m. Monday from Melrose Avenue to Santa Monica Boulevard.

 453.
Parking facilities in the area of West Hollywood Park — the five-story parking structure, the Library Garage, Aquatic and Recreation Center Garage and the Plummer Park South and Robertson lots — will remain closed until Monday.

 454.
Other streets closed for the event are:
— Eastbound Santa Monica Boulevard from North La Cienega Boulevard to North Doheny Drive through 7 a.m. Monday;
— Robertson Boulevard from Santa Monica Boulevard to Melrose Avenue through 7 a.m. Monday;
— Westbound Santa Monica Boulevard from North La Cienega Boulevard to North Doheny Drive through 7 a.m. Monday; and
— San Vicente Boulevard from Santa Monica Boulevard to Cynthia Street through 10 a.m. Monday. Santa Monica Boulevard was closed from Fairfax Avenue to Doheny Drive
— including side streets one block north and one block south of Santa Monica — from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday to accommodate the parade.

 455.
Tens of thousands of people showed up Saturday for the annual WeHo Pride festival, billed as one of the largest celebrations of LGBTQ+ pride in the world, but two attendees wound up behind bars.

 456.
Hunter Lee Darling was identified as the suspect in a cell phone robbery April 19 at the West Hollywood library. An arrest warrant was issued for Darling on May 31, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Information Bureau.

 457.
Deputies spotted Darling at a Saturday Pride event, arrested him and booked him for suspicion of robbery, vandalism and battery, sheriff’s officials said. A friend of Darling, Abby Nicole Thomas, was arrested for allegedly interfering and obstructing an arrest after attempting to keep deputies from
taking Darling into custody, authorities said.

 523.
It doesn’t take a journalist to see what the Nuggets’ skipper is doing, and as boring as coach speak is, it’s surprisingly necessary. 524.
Malone’s ability to get and hold his squad’s attention has been more impressive than any adjustments he’s made. 569.
UAE have played quite a lot of ODI cricket this year. They’ve played a total of 17 ODI matches and have earned a win-loss record of 8-9. There were a few more 50-over games which were not listed as ODIs.

 570.
UAE reached the final of the ACC Men’s Premier Cup 2023 and they finished second in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier Play-off 2023. This helped them book a place in the main round of the ICC World Cup Qualifiers, which will be played in Zimbabwe.

 571.
On the other hand, West Indies have played just one ODI series this year and that was in South Africa, which ended 1-1 as the first ODI was washed out. They have won just two out of their last 15 ODIs.

 572.
The Caribbean side finished ninth on the ODI Super League points table and that has forced them to play the qualifiers. Thus, this series could act as a good preparation for the Windies ahead of the all-important 10-team tournament.

 580.
Pitch Report

 581.
The pitch at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium is usually a good one to bat on. However, over the last couple of years, the average score batting first in ODI cricket at this venue is 250-255. This suggests that it isn’t going to be one-way traffic for the batters. Moreover, spinners have generally performed well and have a good record on this ground.
