() &#8212; </span>Authorities at University of California Riverside removed a student from school after seizing an assault rifle, ammunition and violent hand-drawn images from campus housing, officials say.</p>
  128. <p class="EkqkG nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy">The incident happened on Friday, when the UCR police department executed a search warrant in a campus residence hall &#8220;after evidence of a weapon was found on campus,&#8221; the school said in a message to students.</p>
  129. <p class="EkqkG nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy">Officers searched a room in the North District residential apartments and found an assault rifle registered to a student, ammunition, five high-capacity magazines and &#8220;hand-drawn images in a journal depicting a violent act.&#8221;</p>

  198. <h2>Swifter Justice Will Help Fight Crypto Crime – Prosecutor</h2>
  199. <p><span class="replacer"></span><br />Lee claimed that “regulation rollouts” and the “punishment” of crypto-related crimes “have been slow.” He said:</p>

  201. <p>“We must restore trust in the virtual assets market, which has turned into a lawless zone. To do this, we must speed up not only the pace of investigations, but also trials and sentencing.”</p>

  207. <p>Lee insisted that while crypto-related crimes present courts with novel aspects, at their core, they are essentially no different from conventional financial fraud.</p>
  208. <p>He said that neither investigative agencies nor courts “should find it difficult to deal with virtual asset crimes using new IT.”</p>
  209. <p>Lee justified this by stating that the “essence of stealing property through lies does not change – regardless of the technology involved.” He said:</p>

  211. <p>“An integrated response across the government is urgently needed. This kind of approach will help address the problem of fast-evolving financial and high-tech crimes.”</p>

  218. <h2>Unit Tackling ‘First-of-their-kind’ Crimes</h2>
  219. <p><span class="replacer"></span><br />Lee is the unit’s first director. He was appointed when the team launched in July 2023.</p>
  220. <p>The unit is South Korea’s first and only dedicated cryptoasset investigation organization.</p>
  221. <p>It comprises around 30 professionals from seven government-funded agencies, including the National Tax Service, the Prosecution Service, the Financial Supervisory Service, the Financial Services Commission-run Financial Intelligence Unit, and the Korea Customs Service.</p>
  222. <p>The unit also comprises members of the Korea Deposit Insurance Corporation, the nation’s bank deposit protection agency, as well as the Korea Exchange.</p>
  223. <p>Since its launch, the agency appears to have been inundated with cases. These include a high-profile art-themed altcoin case involving police and prosecution corruption.</p>
  224. <p>Lee also noted that his unit has been dealing with cases such as “illegal over-the-counter (OTC) trade networks” worth “around $478 million.”</p>

  226. <h2>New Prosecution Unit Faces Challenges</h2>
  227. <p><span class="replacer"></span><br />The unit has also investigated allegations surrounding Haru Invest and the crypto lending platform Delio, after the latter suspended withdrawals in October 2023.</p>
  228. <p>Lee also spoke about the challenging nature of his unit’s work, with investigators often entering terra incognita with their probes. He said:</p>
  229. <blockquote>
  230. <p>“The cases the joint unit investigates are mostly first-of-their-kind cases with no existing legal precedent.”</p>
  231. </blockquote>
  232. <p>Lee also commented on a recent wave of reports centering on alleged South Korean “scam coins,” saying:</p>
  233. <blockquote>
  234. <p>“Scam coins are no different from general scams. At their heart, their operators are out to make money by deceiving people.”</p>

  236. <p>Last month, police arrested a man for allegedly<span> stealing almost $362,000 worth of cash in an armed robbery on an </span>OTC<span> crypto buyer.</span></p>

  326. <p>In Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni&#8217;s right-wing Brothers of Italy party looks set to win the most votes in the EU Parliament elections between 8 and 9 June. </p>

  328. <p>That&#8217;s according to a Euronews poll from the end of April. </p>
  329. <p>It found that support for the party remains stable at 28 per cent. </p>
  330. <p>The poll also predicted that the centre-left Democratic Party will come in second place, followed by the populist Five Star Movement. </p>
  331. <p>Support for these two parties is on the rise, however. </p>
  332. <p>Both the Democratic Party and Five Star Movement made slight gains compared to the previous month, according to the Euronews poll. </p>
  333. <p>Right-wing rivals Lega and Forza Italia will have to fight, meanwhile. The poll found they would bag just under 8 per cent of the vote.</p>
  334. <h2>Meloni&#8217;s strategy</h2>
  335. <p>PM Giorgia Meloni has personally led her party&#8217;s election campaign. </p>
  336. <p>Analysts say the strategy is to achieve high voter turnout in order to win as many seats as possible in the EU parliament and influence the formation of future coalitions.</p>
  337. <p>Her Brothers of Italy party is part of the European Conservatives and Reformers (ECR) group in the European Parliament. </p>
  338. <p>Meloni&#8217;s goal, observers claim, is to hold the key to creating a grand centre-right coalition with the European People&#8217;s Party &#8211; something also desired by outgoing European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.</p>
  339. <p>However, before entering the big European game, Meloni needs to overcome two obstacles in her own country.</p>
  340. <p>One is her rival Matteo Salvini, an influential partner in the European Parliament of Marine Le Pen from France&#8217;s far right. </p>
  341. <p>The second problem is the strengthening of the left. </p>
  342. <p>If the Democratic Party, part of the Socialists and Democrats group, can common ground with the Five Star Movement, led by former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, the left and centre-left forces could create a strong structure in Italy&#8217;s fractious political landscape.</p>

  529. <p class="">SAN DIEGO — The remains of three people found near the Mexican fishing port of Ensenada are those of missing surfers from Australia and the U.S. who were killed in an apparent carjacking, authorities said Sunday.</p>
  530. <p class="">Family members made the identifications in person at the behest of Baja California state prosecutors, the state attorney general&#8217;s office said in a statement Sunday obtained by NBC San Diego. The bodies had been recovered from a remote well about 50 feet deep, authorities said.</p>
  531. <p class="">The attorney general’s office said the bodies, found in La Bocana, south of Ensenada, are those of Jake and Callum Robinson, of Australia, and Jack Carter Rhoad, of the U.S.</p>
  532. <p class="">At least two of the three were believed to be living in San Diego, authorities said, according to NBC San Diego. </p>
  533. <p class="">The Ensenada medical examiner&#8217;s office said Friday the three victims were killed by gunshot wounds to the head. </p>
  534. <p class="">At a news conference Sunday, prosecutors said that the motive was carjacking and that the assailants may have been particularly focused on the wheels of the pickup truck used by the missing surfers.</p>

  536. <p class="">The three were at a makeshift encampment during a fishing and surfing trip south of Ensenada, where the Baja coast rapidly becomes remote and filled with surprises for surfers seeking relatively rare rides.</p>
  537. <p class="">Prosecutors said they found the trio’s encampment, including tents, spent gun shells, bloodstains and marks indicating bodies had been dragged.</p>
  538. <p class="">Three people were being questioned in connection with the case, authorities said. Two of the three, a man and a woman, were held on methamphetamine-related allegations, they said, and the third was the subject of a kidnapping warrant.</p>
  539. <p class="">Chief state prosecutor María Elena Andrade Ramírez said previously there may be evidence, including a victim&#8217;s cellphone in the possession of one of the three, that might connect the trio to the case.</p>
  540. <p class="">A fourth body was discovered with the three in the well and may be part of an unrelated case, authorities said.</p>

  542. <p class="">On Sunday, Andrade Ramírez met with the three men&#8217;s parents, her office said in its announcement identifying the bodies.</p>
  543. <p class="">She reassured them, it said, that she was committed to ensuring those responsible face the full weight of the law.</p>
  544. <p class="">The three men were considered missing on April 27 when they did not return to an Airbnb rental closer to the border, in Rosarito, Debra Robinson, the mother of Jake and Callum Robinson, said on Facebook.</p>
  545. <p class="">Cartel and big-city street violence attributed to the drug trade in places like Tijuana has been seen as rare in the world of Baja tourism, which requires off-road-capable vehicles and the ability to start a campfire.</p>
